This is the forty-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Angkhot drawing out Kumbhakan's four riddles, Rama sending Sukhrip against Kumbhakan, Kumbhakan tricking Sukhrip with the northern Rang tree, Hanuman rescuing Sukhrip near Lanka's gate, Rama rebuking Sukhrip and praising Hanuman, Kumbhakan seeking Brahma's Mokhasak spear, the setup and spoiling of the Mokhasak sharpening rite, and Kumbhakan's renewed march in Garuda formation.

Translation

Angkhot Draws Out the Riddles

Then the thoughtful grandson of Indra heard the command of the lord of the earth and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen worlds. He raised his hands in homage and bowed at the lotus feet, in the midst of the honored ministers, received the command clearly, and came out.

When he had passed beyond the forecourt of the four-armed lord, he displayed brave battle-power, sprang upward through the clouds, and went straight to the victorious battlefield.

He saw Kumbhakan the yaksha standing in his jeweled chariot as great commander. The monkey lord descended straight into the midst of the demon army.

He displayed bold battle-power like a brave lion-king and coiled his tail into a splendid seat, towering high level with the asura's chariot.

Then he spoke fair words: "Kumbhakan the yaksha, now Phra Chakri, lord of the earth, has commanded me to come. I am to speak with you, a good man, and bring the riddle-matter to an end. His Majesty, who is wise, already knows everything. What he has considered and seen is that this is a verbal turn of phrase that you crafted deliberately by your own wisdom, and that its details are clear only in your own heart. It is not true riddle-ground for anyone else to solve. Whatever your meaning is, state it, and we will compare it."

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed lord heard the grandson of the king of the gods. He clapped his hands in mockery and answered: "Hey, hey, Angkhot, you come twisting and hiding your speech. I am not a foolish child who will be fooled by forest-monkey tricks. How could you know? But since you ask me, I must tell you. The lord of mighty Lanka city is the tusked elephant: unrighteous and vile beyond measure, he secretly stole away another man's wife. Phra Rama the husband is the foolish ascetic: he left his only beloved wife lonely in the forest, and when she vanished, wandered searching and did not find her, until fighting and turmoil followed. The cruel woman is Sammanakkha, vile beyond comparison, roaming to court men without shame until great suffering came upon her. The bad man is Phiphek the yaksha, who joined with the enemy and did not know gratitude to his kin. Go tell Phra Rama exactly what I have said. Then have him quickly raise his army and come out to fight."

Then the battle-skilled son of Pali heard the younger brother of the twenty-armed lord. The monkey laughed, clapped his hands, pointed at him, and mocked: "Hey, Kumbhakan the yaksha! You boast that you have wisdom, tying together a riddle according to your own mind, then speak contemptuously as if no one knew as much as you. The victorious lord of Hari's line has a merciful and compassionate heart. He sent Phiphek out to speak, hoping to grant the yaksha life. Yet you turn back arrogant words and say you will fight the four-armed lord. It is only fitting that death reach you, and that your head be severed from your body by the shining arrow." Having spoken, he displayed power and flew up through the sky back to camp.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the lord of the three worlds and reported the words he had exchanged with the asura from the beginning. "He spoke back in defiance, with crude words against your splendid lotus feet, saying to raise the army and fight." The monkey lord explained everything.

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, heard the grandson of Makhawan. The lord of the sky gave command: "Wise Phiphek, this Kumbhakan the yaksha was said to stand in truth; therefore I had mercy for him. Now he turns and speaks defiant words, crude through delusion. The fruit will be his death. We shall raise the army and fight."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha answered the royal words: "For Your Majesty to raise the army and go out to fight now is not yet fitting. Let the powerful monkey king, son of the Sun, who is Pali's younger brother and as fierce as his elder, raise the army and go out to kill and fight."

Then the radiant Sun-line lord, Phra Narai himself, heard Phiphek the asura and approved in every way. He gave royal command to brave-hearted Phraya Sukhrip: "Raise the troops and go fight against Phraya Kumbhakan. If you see his strength is too heavy and cannot be broken, stand firm; I myself will go out to battle and destroy the asura's life." Then he gave command to the noble monkey Chomphuphan: "Arrange the army for Pali's powerful younger brother."

Then Sukhrip and Chomphuphan, skilled in battle, received the command, offered joined hands, and both monkeys came out.

Chomphuphan arranged the troops, setting Nilanon as the vanguard, Kesonthamala on the left wing, powerful Wahuroam on the right wing, Nilapasan in the body-guard, Nilakesi over the steady division, Sattaphali as adjutant, and Komut the monkey over the rear. The army stood ready before the pavilion: thirty samut of troops, each one terrible in power, brandishing weapons like flames. It was a fivefold army in fifteen divisions, according to the order of a great host, packed dense and roaring, prepared for the son of the Sun.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in battle, when the monkey army was ready, went to cleanse his body.

His noble body was dressed in battle array: trousers shining with Garuda-vine pattern, a black-ground cloth with naga border, divine shining fabric and necklace-cord, strings and nine-gem ornaments like a falling rainbow, direction-plates, chest-ornaments, and a shining pendant; gold armlets with entwined dragon pattern, golden crown and ear ornaments, garlands of golden flowers hanging down. Bold as a lion-king, he took up the mighty diamond sword and went to the army.

When the auspicious moment came, he ordered the brave troops to move. Their shout shook the forest, and the procession unfolded and came straight to the victorious battlefield.

When they arrived, he halted the lesser and greater monkey troops in lines along the forest-edge, holding firm and watching the strength of the asura.

Sukhrip and the Northern Rang Tree

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha looked and saw Pali's younger brother leading the monkey army out. He examined and inspected every rank of the forest-monkey troops and thought: "This one is strong and bold of heart. If I go in and break him by force, I may not withstand his strength. I must speak by trickery, deceive him into drawing down his power, and afterward go in to attack and seize the noble monkey. That will be easy and convenient for the army." Thinking this, he brandished his weapon, displayed fierce power, and had the splendid jeweled chariot driven straight before the monkey army.

When he arrived, he cried out: "Sukhrip, skilled in battle, why is this? Pali was your brother from the same womb, his merit toward you like a father's. Why do you have no gratitude? Instead, through delusion, you became enemy, joined unrighteous Lak and Ram, and killed your own brother. You seized the wealth, splendor, and attendants of your elder brother, fearing no karma and enmity. Who will count your face good? You have raised troops and soldiers, this monkey host, to oppose me in power, unrighteous one?"

Then powerful Sukhrip heard Kumbhakan's words. He clapped his hands, laughed, and answered: "Hey, hey, ugly wretch, you do not know reason. The Garuda-borne lord, mighty Phra Ram, has come from Vaikuntha hoping to subdue the worthless asuras and end the envious villains. Powerful Pali swore long ago that if he was not straight with me, his younger brother, may the crafted arrow of Narai strike him. This time his life ended because he broke truth and righteousness. It is not that I wrongfully meant to destroy him and seize his wealth. Why gather up these words, accursed one? I have raised the army to fight the yaksha and cut off your crowned head to offer at the pavilion."

Then holy and powerful Kumbhakan heard Sukhrip speak. Angry, grinding his teeth, he said: "Look at this beast, arrogantly speaking deluded words. You and I are far apart in the matter of fighting. Your power seems very small, like a tiger beside a lion-king. To seek victory over you is shame before the army. If you can go to the northern continent and pull up the rang tree there, then I will see that you have power. Otherwise, do not boast."

Then the powerful son of the Sun, not seeing the trick, grew angry. "Hey, Kumbhakan the asura! You are the younger brother of the ten-faced yaksha. Even your elder brother already lost in power to me. When I lifted the jeweled parasol, have you forgotten, yaksha? Even Mount Meru bent and sank, yet I lifted it swiftly. What is a rang tree in the north? Would I be unable to pull it up?" Having spoken, he brandished the victorious sword and flew away by his power.

In the snap of one finger, swiftly, he reached the splendid northern continent and descended to the earth near Mount Kalachan. He saw the great broad rang tree, towering nearly equal to the swift wind, and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen worlds. He hurried toward it.

With foot braced, shoulder braced, and hands pulling, the roots shook and the earth rang and trembled. He rocked and wrenched it with swift strength and pulled it up as he desired.

The monkey lord brandished it and displayed power. The ten directions thundered like lightning. He sprang upward through the clouds and returned in less than a moment.

When he arrived, he cried out with power like a lion-king: "Hey, Kumbhakan the asura, what tree is this? Tell me."

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed yaksha saw that the monkey's bodily strength was weakened. The asura did not let him stop to rest. He brandished his battle-mace, proud and swift as a turning discus, leapt from the yaksha king's chariot, and rushed in to attack and break him.

He struck left and swept right in confusion, with fierce power like a lion, fought close in hand combat, and hit the monkey many times.

Then the radiant son of the Sun received, guarded, and fought back. The monkey lord pursued and pressed forward.

He struck with the great rang tree, sounding like lightning. It hit Kumbhakan the asura, and the tree shattered in his hands.

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed lord, skilled in battle, fixed his aim on killing the monkey, pressed into the melee, and rushed on.

He struck with the excellent mace-weapon. Sukhrip staggered, sank, and reeled. The kumbhanda caught him clamped under his armpit and raised the army to enter Lanka.

Then all the monkey troops saw powerful Sukhrip lose position to Phraya Kumbhakan. The asura had seized and carried him away. They all trembled in alarm. There was no time to break in and rescue him, and the army broke and scattered.

When they reached the splendid pavilion, the thoughtful monkeys crawled in before the lord of the earth, bowed, and reported: "Now mighty Sukhrip has lost to the trick of Kumbhakan the yaksha. He seized him and carried him to Lanka. We could not rescue him in time."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard the news burning like fire at the end of the age. The righteous king reflected: "How did Pali's younger brother, in this battle, grow proud in heart and lose position to the vile enemy? The ten directions will mock him." Thinking this, he gave royal command to noble Hanuman the great soldier: "Hurry after them. Win the fight and bring Sukhrip back."

Then the powerful son of Phra Phai bowed his head, received the royal command, raised joined hands, took leave, and hurried out.

He made himself mighty, displayed power until the ten directions shook and trembled, and sprang swiftly through the sky, hurrying through the air.

He saw Phraya Kumbhakan clamping the battle-skilled son of the Sun near the city gate. The monkey rushed in and attacked.

He kicked with his left foot, swept with his right, and squeezed the yaksha's throat with his hand. Sukhrip slipped free from the asura, and the two monkeys together fought and attacked.

Then mighty and brave Kumbhakan was too surprised to resist. The demon lord lost position and was distressed. Alone he received and guarded; he could not fight hand to hand with the monkeys. He struck left and right in confusion, at a loss but forced to fight.

Then the noble monkeys Sukhrip and Hanuman swarmed in close together, each striking the asura. The victorious son of Phra Phai sprang in and bit the left and right ears; powerful Sukhrip bit Kumbhakan's nose.

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed lord could not continue fighting for victory. He ran headlong into the gate.

Then the two brave and mighty monkeys saw the yaksha flee into Lanka, and together they flew back by their power.

When they arrived, they paid homage to the radiant lord of the three worlds and explained the account of the fight with the kumbhanda.

Then the lord of Hari's line, Phra Narai himself, heard and grew angry like the fire at the end of the age. His voice rang through the whole pavilion: "Hey, hey, son of the Sun! It was wasted strength for you to be powerful and brave. Why did you not consider? You were misled by the asura's trick. Warfare of this little difficulty is not deep or confusing, yet you lost position and almost lost your life. Only mighty Hanuman arrived in time. Otherwise your life would have ended by the deluded enemy. Shame before the kumbhanda host! You let them grow arrogant in pride. It is a defeat for you as commander of the army: you could not even guard yourself. I would like to have you killed, yet you once did proper service."

Then Phraya Sukhrip the noble monkey feared as if his life would end, and answered the powerful lord: "I acted carelessly and brought shame beneath your feet. That fault deserves the loss of life, yet Phra Chakrakrit has mercy. Your grace surpasses the three worlds; nothing can be compared against it. May your royal power cover the monkey's head."

Then Phra Chakrakrit, mighty bow-bearing lord, heard the son of the Sun. The king smiled gently, his heart eased, and he praised mighty Hanuman: "You are fit to be a great soldier." Having spoken, he went into the golden pavilion.

Kumbhakan Seeks the Mokhasak

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha had his ears and nose cut off and was in pain, his body bruised and senseless. The more he thought, the more rage and sorrow he felt; tears washed over the yaksha's face. Walking and thinking of the fight, the asura hurried up.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage at the feet of his elder brother, ashamed before the army as if his life would end.

Then the ten-headed Sun-line lord saw his younger brother wounded and grieving. The kumbhanda was shocked and distressed. He gave royal command: "Powerful one whose might shakes the earth, you went out to fight those enemies. Why has this happened?"

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha heard the royal words and answered the command: "I raised the army to fight the wild monkeys. I seized Sukhrip and clamped him under my arm, carrying him near the city gate. Then one brave monkey named Hanuman came after me, caught up at once, attacked, and took Sukhrip away. Your younger brother was alone, too surprised to know what to do, and could not resist. I lost position as if I had lost my life, and my grief is beyond telling."

Then the ten-headed Sun-line yaksha embraced his younger brother. "Jewel of your elder brother's eye, do not grieve. It is ordinary for one born as a man that wisdom is highest of all. In war there is defeat and victory; this does not concern only my beloved younger brother. You possess power and have subdued all three worlds. This war is not very heavy. Think how to break through and win victory from the enemy, to be your honor in the future until earth and sky lose their splendor. Why be sorrowful and hurt? Hurry and think how to oppose them."

Then Kumbhakan the battle-skilled deputy king heard his powerful elder brother's teaching and took pride in his heart. He said, "Humans and wild monkeys: your younger brother will destroy their lives. But I will take leave of Your Majesty and go to obtain the victorious spear in Brahma's realm, the excellent weapon called Mokhasak, fierce in power like the bright sun. Then I will return to fight and destroy the royal enemy host."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha heard his brother's words and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen worlds. Stroking his back, he spoke gently: "Mighty one whose power is like a grinding discus, the crooked humans and monkeys will all die by my younger brother's hand."

Then Kumbhakan the Sun-line yaksha bowed with joined hands, took leave, and came out from the victorious audience hall.

Then he displayed power until the ten directions quaked and trembled, sprang swiftly through the sky, and flew by the path of air.

He reached the great realm of Brahma. Glad in heart, the demon lord bowed at the feet of the eight-armed lord and spoke with fair words: "Now in Lanka city, war and killing have arisen. I ask for the powerful Mokhasak, to go oppose the enemy's power."

Then radiant supreme Brahma heard Kumbhakan's words and gave command: "This jeweled spear Mokhasak is strange; I look at it in doubt. It has no stain even as fine as a fiber. Why has rust appeared on it? You stand in the tenfold righteousness. Perhaps your mind has been careless in some matter, and therefore the divine weapon has come to show this strange sign."

Then Kumbhakan the Sun-line yaksha heard the god-king's words and answered: "I myself stand in righteousness and am not darkened by delusion. Ten-faced Thotsakan has caused the danger and division by stealing Lady Sida, who is Phra Rama's wife. Her husband has therefore followed him and come to kill. When I warned him for good, he became angry, so I had to fight the enemy. Because he is my elder brother, I can think no other way. I offer my life in repayment for my elder brother's merit. Lord, have mercy and be the refuge of me, the kumbhanda."

Then fashioned eight-armed Brahma heard Kumbhakan's words and replied: "The ten-headed demon-lord is worthless, vile, and crude. He oppresses devas and asuras, his heart swelling in arrogance." Having spoken, the four-faced lord took up the Mokhasak and gave it to the yaksha. "Do not lose your truth, according to the Brahma-line."

Then holy and powerful Kumbhakan received the jeweled spear. The asura paid homage, took leave of supreme Brahma, displayed power until heaven and earth shook, left the brilliant jeweled palace, and flew back.

When he reached Lanka city, the younger brother of the ten-headed yaksha gave royal command to the demon-lord Rittikasura: "Go set up a ritual hall, broad, long, and vast, at the foot of Mount Meru near the riverbank, splendid with shining brilliance."

Then vigorous Rittikasura received Phraya Kumbhakan's command, paid homage, and came out.

He assigned the work to all the demon officers, every group to left and right, and they came out from the city, facing toward Mount Meru.

When they reached the bank of the Sithandorn, he ordered the yaksha host to set up the royal ritual hall there beside the river.

Then the troop-hosts and brave soldiers heard their commander's order and hurried in confusion, every division preparing the work together.

They raised a royal ritual hall, long and ornate with nineteen bays. The red roof was overlaid with gold; the finials shone in splendor. Its four porches were beautiful like heavenly palaces, and the gables like god-made drawings. The red ceiling was set with stars and hung with flower-garlands. Royal fences, parasols, and rows of banners waved at their tips, surrounding the shining stone slab where the asura would sharpen the victorious spear.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha sat on a jeweled seat in the midst of the army and gave royal order to Mahakan the yaksha: "Prepare the shining jeweled chariot and the army troops. I will go perform the rite at Mount Meru and sharpen the mighty Mokhasak to destroy the humans and monkeys and end their breath."

Then Mahakan the brave minister bowed his head, received the demon king's command, and ran out hurriedly.

He levied demons in procession formation for a great forest-journey: five thousand banner troops in the van before the demon king; the right division guarding with guns, eight thousand chosen brave soldiers; the left division holding bows, springing forward to destroy the enemy, eight thousand; the rear division holding bows, shields, spears, swords, monkey-swords, and daggers. The golden shining chariot was also prepared, complete according to the asura's command.

Then Kumbhakan the Sun-line yaksha, when dawn came and the time grew bright, entered the bathing place.

He cleansed and bathed his body in delight. Jeweled sprinklers poured down like rain. He put on sweet perfume mixed with divine golden flowers. His trousers were set with jewel lines and vine pattern; his side-panel cloth had stem designs, with hanging panels splendidly arranged. He wore a great sash bright with rubies, chest ornaments, jeweled strings and necklaces, brilliant diamond direction-plates, gold armlets and carved bracelets, jewel rings and shining ear ornaments. He hung a flower garland, set blossoms in his hair, girded on the radiant diamond sword, took up the mighty Mokhasak, and walked gracefully to mount the victory chariot.

O chariot, black royal chariot: its ruby, gold, and emerald wheels were beautiful. Its three curved yokes arched gracefully; its tiered levels and floating finials were all gems and diamonds. Jeweled side panels bore bird-patterns, upward lotuses and shadow-screens, and cutwork frames. The throne glittered with dense gems, its light shining through the clouds. The charioteer drove the wild lions quickly; it floated through the sky. Royal insignia stood everywhere, bright with hanging chamara tassels. Gongs sounded with trumpets; the escort shouted, banners rising thickly. It looked out over Mount Yugandhara and passed beyond the seven seas.

When he reached the royal ritual hall at the foot of great Mount Meru, he ordered his loyal ministers to levy patrols and inspections, setting guard-posts by land and water. "Let nothing rotten or worm-filled come into the great ocean." Having commanded this, he moved with royal dignity, bold as a lion-king, descended from the splendid jeweled chariot, and entered the ritual hall.

He lit incense and candles in worship, scattered seven-colored flowers, and prepared the blood of a bull and deer on the offering tray. When this was done, he raised his hands above his head, worshipped the fashioned supreme Brahma, recited the spell a thousand times, and sharpened the mighty Mokhasak.

The Spoiled Rite

Then the radiant Sun-line lord, Phra Narai himself, when golden light shone across the sky and earth, woke from the sleeping couch. He cleansed himself, washed his face, invited his younger brother Phra Lak, and went out among the army ministers.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled seat, brilliant and radiant, with his powerful soldiers all around. The lord asked Phiphek: "What is Kumbhakan the yaksha doing today, that he has not raised the great army and come out to seek battle?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "Phraya Kumbhakan has not raised the army to come kill, because he has gone to sharpen the powerful Mokhasak at great Mount Meru. If he finishes its four edges, it will shine in power like burning fire, able to subdue as far as the sixteen worlds, and no one in all ten directions will withstand it."

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, heard Phiphek explain the matter and asked: "The demon lord's weapon is mighty, holy, and earth-shaking. What plan can we make so that he does not accomplish his desire?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "Kumbhakan the demon-lord is extremely clean by nature. He loves only sweet scents and perfumes. He bathes and anoints himself with fragrant water every day. Any rotten stench of any kind: if he sees it, he vomits and cannot endure it. Let the mighty Wind's son and quick-witted Angkhot transform into a crow pecking at a rotten dog and float near the yaksha. He will not be able to sharpen the spear as he wishes, and his rite should be spoiled."

Then the radiant Phra Krishnuharak heard Phiphek the asura and gave royal command to Angkhot and the Wind's son: "Mighty and brave ones, go ruin the demon lord's rite by the wisdom of monkeys."

Then battle-skilled Angkhot and Hanuman bowed their heads, received the command of the four-armed lord, took leave, and came out.

Each displayed power; the sound thundered through every direction. They sprang up through the clouds and headed toward Mount Meru.

When they arrived, they saw the demon lord sharpening the radiant Mokhasak inside the royal ritual hall near the bank of the Sithandorn. The two descended from the air, bold as lion-kings. Each recited a powerful spell and transformed his monkey body.

Hanuman became a dead dog, swollen and rotten, its odor fiercely foul. Angkhot changed into a crow, pecking and drifting with it in the water.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha was sharpening the spear in the rite. The asura looked into the ocean and saw the rotten dog floating and circling there, with swarms of flies crawling over it, a crow pecking it, a foul stench spreading everywhere, and worms crawling thickly over the body. Merely seeing it made the yaksha vomit, nauseated and dizzy. He could not sharpen the spear as he wished, so he rose and went to the jeweled chariot.

Then he gave royal order to move the demon army away from the foot of Mount Meru and hurry back into Lanka city.

Then brave Angkhot and Hanuman, when they saw Kumbhakan the asura move his army, both powerful monkeys rejoiced together. They changed their bodies back into monkeys and rose from the great ocean.

Then battle-skilled Kumbhakan, when he reached Lanka city, went in to attend the asura king.

He bowed his head at the feet of his elder royal brother, the yaksha, and reported the full account of how the rite had been spoiled, from the beginning to the end.

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha heard his royal younger brother. The asura was shaken and downcast, stood stiff in thought, his heart burning hot like fire, and answered: "The great ocean Sithandorn is beyond human range and domain; it is the gathering place of serpents. There is nothing finer than the ocean's water, and it has no stain. Even a peacock's gleaming feather would not stay there, but would sink into the current. Yet a dead dog floated in the water, and a crow came flying to perch and peck. It seems that vile Phiphek told the trick to the forest-monkeys, who came to ruin the weapon rite. Though the spell-work has been lost, do not lose heart. Your Mokhasak cannot be opposed by the three worlds or the earth. At dawn, raise the army and kill all the villains."

Then brave-hearted Phraya Kumbhakan heard his elder brother's command. The demon lord answered: "Your younger brother's rage is beyond rage, tight in my chest, my heart hot as if seared by fire. Even if I die, I will not regret my life. I will repay their hand." Having reported, he bowed and took leave of his fashioned elder royal brother, then walked with stately steps to his radiant golden palace.

When he arrived, he gave command to Rittikala the yaksha: "Prepare the fourfold army. Tomorrow we will march out for victory."

The vanguard held matchlock guns; the steady division held stone clubs, strong-bodied and powerful; the body-guard was proud and eager for war, fierce, holding bows with quivers; the royal division all wore red swords at the waist and held thrusting lances; the adjutant division all held great spears while officers inspected the troops in tumult; the reserve was chosen for endurance, holding pole-weapons and ready to fight; the rear held weapons in hand, displaying fierce power like lions. The splendid royal chariot was prepared, waiting for the asura to come.

He took up the mighty Mokhasak and went to mount the chariot.
