Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the forty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Rama sending Phra Lak against Kumbhakan, the demon vanguard's defeat, Kumbhakan's Mokhasak strike against Phra Lak, Rama's night journey and lament, Phiphek's medicine counsel, Hanuman delaying the Sun and gathering the Sangkorani and Tri Chawa medicines, Hanuman's visit to Ayutthaya for the five sacred waters, Phra Lak's revival, and the demon watch-post's report to Lanka.

Phra Lak Takes the Field

Then Phra Rama, lord of the Solar Line and bearer of the bow, lay upon the splendid couch and pondered in threefold thought. "Maiyarap the yaksha lord secretly stole in and enchanted me. Anyone else would have lost his life there, deep below in Badan." He lay thinking in silence and did not sleep until golden light shone across the sky, the wind blew softly with mixed flower-fragrance, flocks of birds cried out as if offering music, the sounds of gongs and drums echoed, moon and stars withdrew behind the ring of mountains, and the sun rose above the peaks.

He bathed, purified himself, and dressed in shining splendor like a god drawn by a master hand. His royal hand took up the mighty bow, and he came out before the victorious pavilion.

The warriors of both cities were assembled, bowing their heads and raising their hands before the lord of the earth, crowded as stars encircling the moon in the sky. Then a roaring sound was heard, shaking Marakat mountain; dust veiled the sun, and the king gave command: "Look, Phiphek. This sound that rolls and shakes the forest: is it Kumbhakan's army coming, or some other asura?"

Then wise Phiphek heard the lord's command, bowed, and answered: "The army coming out is Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha. He bears the powerful Mokhasak. Today he seems very strong."

Then Phra Rama, wheel-bearing lord of the Solar Line, heard the younger brother of Thotsakan say that the yaksha lord's army had come, strong through a divine weapon and fierce with terrible power. He asked Phraya Phiphek the asura: "This time, who should go against that yaksha and contend for victory, so we do not lose position before that unrighteous asura?"

Then Phiphek the diligent astrologer received the words of the Garuda-mounted lord, bowed, and answered: "The monkey kings do not seem able to withstand the yaksha's hand. Let the noble younger brother, Phra Lak, go and match his power against the demon lord."

Then Phra Chakri, famed in every direction, heard Phiphek the astrologer and was pleased. He said, "Look, Lak, beloved younger brother who shares my life. Raise the great army and go attack, to test the asura's strength."

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak bowed his head at Rama's feet and answered the command gladly: "I, your younger brother, ask to serve beneath your feet, splendid elder king. I will fight to the death without regret for life, and will not let dust trouble the mighty lord."

Then Rama, Narai in human form, heard the younger brother who shared his life, and it was like nectar poured over him. He commanded the son of the bright Sun to inspect and prepare the warriors on left and right, and to go with the noble younger brother to kill the royal enemies.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, glorious monkey lord, received the command of Phra Chakri, offered joined hands, and came out.

He set brave Surakan, skilled in war, over a vanguard of seven samut of troops; Kesarathamala covered the flanks with ten samut of warriors. The royal center held fifteen samut, chosen entirely from earth-shaking champions. Komut the great adjutant commanded ten samut of monkey soldiers. Mahathawikan held the rear with seven samut of warriors ready for battle. All brandished weapons in their hands as if they would scoop up the earth itself. Each one swelled with battle-pride, wild and eager, and the jeweled chariot stood prepared, waiting for the monkey lord to escort the prince.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, took leave of Phra Chakri and went to the bathing place.

They opened jeweled pipes shaped like golden lotuses, spraying fragrant mist. Divine perfumes were mixed with flowers. He put on trousers worked with flying Garuda-vines, a deep green cloth edged in gold and serpent forms, side-panels with kinnara vines, hanging panels set with dark-blue Garuda scrolls, a breastplate shining with chains, direction-plates of chased gold set with gems, pendant loops of fine gold, rings with golden Garuda settings, armlets shaped like transformed nagas, and a bright jeweled crown. He girded on his sword, took up the power-bearing bow, and stepped into the shining chariot.

O royal jeweled chariot: axle, wheels, and rim shone with diamond light; the yoke and carrying-pole gleamed through the sky; carved figures encircled the floating throne. Jeweled pillars, golden dragon-scrolls, swan-vines descending to the sand, hanging clusters, four-faced splendor, bright gems, and trailing banners adorned its rear. The charioteer drove divine horses, proud for battle and springing forward with fixed aim. Regalia filled the sky; ranks of banners led the way. Gongs and drums thundered, the earth shook through all worlds, and the warriors cried victory as the great troops hurried forward.

When they arrived and saw Kumbhakan's army firmly stationed at the forest edge, Phra Lak halted the great host to observe the asura's bearing.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the monkey host coming, with a slight human as commander of the forces. That young prince was slender and beautiful like an image, his face bright as the moon, lovely to anyone who saw him. Kumbhakan gave royal command to the demon troops, great and small, to divide outward like crow-wings and hold firm, not yet charging. Then he gave a lion-roar, bold as a royal lion, and had the jeweled chariot driven through the army.

He cried, "Hey, little human, tiny as a finger, beautiful as a woman. Are you the one called Phra Lak? I see you and pity you. How can you dare come against the Mokhasak? How could you be a match for a yaksha's hand? I think you will not escape with your life. Hurry and withdraw your army. Go back and tell your elder brother Rama to come out and fight. Then we will see who is the better one."

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line heard Kumbhakan's words and answered: "Hey, hey, demon lord, do not boast with coarse speech. I am victorious Death, whose power surpasses the world. You are the younger brother of the ten-faced king, trusting only in the sharp Mokhasak. I am the younger brother of Phra Chakri, who bears the mighty bow and excellent weapons. I have destroyed the lives of demon hosts beyond counting. Do not invoke the Garuda-mounted lord, crown of the earth. I have brought this army to kill you, cut off your yaksha head, and carry it to the feet of Phra Chakri in the golden pavilion."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard Phra Lak speak and grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. He ground his teeth, stamped his feet, and made power resound like thunder. "Ha, human no larger than a fly! I will chop every limb of you to pieces." Having spoken, he ordered Lothan, the demon charioteer, to turn the jeweled chariot back toward the massed army.

Then he roared out a proclamation: "Hey, warriors of the vanguard! Hurry in, attack in ranks, and kill the monkey host until their breath is gone."

Then the brave vanguard warriors bowed their heads to receive the demon king's command and leapt forward to strike the monkey army.

They hurled weapons like rain. Each side shot arrows. Their shouting thundered through sky and earth, and the cutting and hacking became a storm of disorder.

Then the lesser and greater monkey troops fought back in battle for victory, quick and surging in attack. Feet kicked, mouths bit, and they tangled with the yakshas, fighting rank by rank, pressing and grappling, each side giving no ground.

Then the demon warriors, skilled in battle, drove one another forward into combat, pursuing and striking the monkey army in confusion.

They turned and seized each other in many holds; each struck and killed amid the disorder. Each side had fierce power, each was brave, and each endured the attack.

Then the noble monkey warriors dodged and slipped aside with quick skill, then surged in and struck the demon troops.

Heads and feet lay severed everywhere through their bold power. The asuras broke and fell back, unable to endure, running wildly and no longer waiting to fight.

Then Triphalam the yaksha, Rittikasura the asura, and Phatthakawi the demon saw the army scattering in defeat. Each shook with anger, brandished weapons like doomsday fire, and charged to pursue and harry the monkeys.

The three commanders split apart and attacked with bearing bold as lions, striking left and right with fierce power in the thick of the forest-monkey host.

Then Suresen, Surakan, and powerful Nilakhan saw the three yakshas rushing in and pressing hard. They grew furious like blazing fire, displayed brave battle-power, ground their teeth until the sky resounded, and surged forward to face the asuras.

Suresen sprang and seized Triphalam the yaksha. Brave Surakan seized Phatthakawi the demon lord. Mighty Nilakhan seized bold Rittikasura. The six warriors fought hand to hand, contending without pause.

Then the three strong asuras surged in, pressing hard and striking against the three monkeys.

They stabbed, cut, and seized one another, turning and twisting with battle-strength. Each side answered power with power, back and forth.

Then the three bold monkeys, strong in power, caught the blows and warded off the asuras, then surged in to kill and fight.

The three monkeys seized the three demon lords and, by their monkey strength, smashed them down upon the earth. The asuras' lives ended there.

Then mighty Kumbhakan saw his three warriors dead and grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. He brandished the Mokhasak, stamped his feet, and roared like thunder, ordering the bright jeweled chariot driven forward to attack the monkeys.

Then Phra Lak, brave younger brother, saw the younger brother of the twenty-armed king come to attack. He drew a weapon-arrow to the bowstring, intent on destroying the yaksha, pulled with mighty strength, and released it.

The sound thundered through the air, and the earth shook in fear. The arrow struck the charioteer dead, and the victory-chariot broke and shattered.

Then fierce-hearted Kumbhakan fell down upon the earth. The demon lord became furious. Grinding his teeth until the sky resounded, he brandished the Mokhasak in his right hand, leapt with yaksha strength, and seized Phra Lak's chariot at once.

Then the splendid younger prince saw Phraya Kumbhakan the asura acting proud and arrogant. He swung his royal bow down against the yaksha's body, leapt from the heavenly jeweled chariot, and sprang onto Kumbhakan's shoulder. They struck, stabbed, blocked, and turned as quickly as a spinning wheel, two brave warriors fighting and grappling, changing holds in the moment.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan guarded and parried as he fought. The asura leapt in, setting one foot upon Phra Lak's knee and raising the sharp Mokhasak in his hand, aiming to destroy his life, turning and shifting through tangled positions.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line clashed hand to hand with the demon, pressing and surging into the fight.

He struck with his royal bow against Kumbhakan's body. The sound was like the sky being split a hundred thousand times, and the asura staggered away under the force.

Then Kumbhakan of the Solar Line of yakshas was bruised through his whole body, as if his life would end. He thought with pride that he must win through deluded courage. He raised his hands above his head in homage and recited a splendid spell.

When he had finished, he blew and rubbed himself at once; the pain throughout his body vanished. He brandished the radiant jeweled spear, took aim, and hurled it straight ahead.

It struck Phra Lak of the Solar Line in the chest. He could not keep his body upright. He fell in the middle of the victorious battlefield, senseless and without awareness.

Then Phraya Sukhrip saw the younger brother of Phra Chakri struck by the wicked asura's spear. He was terrified beyond thought, as if his own life would end, and he ran in to catch the body of the younger prince, grieving as the son of the Sun.

Then Angkhot, Hanuman, and the eighteen crowned monkey chiefs became angry like the fire at the end of an age. They ground their teeth, stamped their feet, displayed their bold strength, and each leapt forward to attack the demon troops in confusion.

Heads and bodies lay severed everywhere; the asuras died beyond counting. Angkhot and Hanuman, skilled in victory, surged in and pursued Kumbhakan.

The two warriors fought, cut, and stabbed with fierce strength, kicking, biting, slapping, and punching in a tangled attack.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan, alone, could not keep fighting against the two monkeys. He was forced to parry and guard until the sun sank behind the mountain edge. Then he ordered the army withdrawn and returned into Lanka city.

When he reached his great palace, splendid as Tavatimsa, he went up to attend his elder brother in the radiant great hall.

Then the ten-headed lord of the yakshas sat above his jeweled throne and saw his beloved younger brother. He gave royal command: "You, mighty one of Brahma's line, who raised the demon army to break the human and forest-monkey troops, why did you withdraw only when the sun had set behind the mountain? Did the war go badly, or did you win? I have waited eagerly for you, younger brother."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan bowed his head at his brother's feet and answered: "I raised the troops and went out to win against the human and the noble monkeys. The enemies were fierce and could fight hard. When my opening came, I hurled the Mokhasak and struck Phra Lak in the chest. When the sun's light ended, I withdrew the army and came back."

Then Raphanasura the yaksha king heard this and rejoiced as if he had gained the sky of heaven. He clapped all twenty hands until the sound thundered in fearsome waves; ten mouths laughed in delight, and he went to embrace his beloved younger brother. "You are fit to be the crest of Lanka, to rule the heavenly kingdom, to continue the glory of the yaksha Solar Line, and to stand as pillar of the demon island. The wicked enemies will lose their lives. Your fame will endure, and all people of the city will rejoice."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard the royal words and was delighted. He bowed his head, took leave of his elder king, moved away with graceful bearing, and went to his splendid palace.

Then the brave monkey warriors saw Kumbhakan withdraw his powerful army and go back. Since evening had fallen with the sun's light, they could not pursue him in battle. Their hearts burned as if touched by poisonous fire, and in helplessness they returned together.

Each came to support Phra Lak of the Solar Line. They pulled and tugged at the asura's Mokhasak, but it would not move from his body. At the end of strength and thought, with tears covering their faces, the noble monkeys grieved together for the beloved younger brother of the four-armed lord.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in battle, saw that the powerful Mokhasak would not come out of Phra Lak's body. Grieving almost to death, he beckoned Nilanon to him: "Go report to Phra Chakri. Let the sky-lord know everything at his lotus feet."

Then mighty Nilanon heard Sukhrip's command and ran in haste.

When he arrived, he bowed his head before the lord of the three worlds and, sobbing as he spoke, reported: "The beautiful younger brother went out to fight against mad Kumbhakan. Now he has been struck by that one's Mokhasak. The younger lord has lost his life."

Then the lord who surpasses the three worlds heard it as if Death had come and torn out his heart. Tears welled and flowed from his eyes; he suffered and grieved beyond measure, as if his own life were ending. The king took up the mighty bow, and with the monkey warriors and Nilanon leading, left the golden pavilion and hurried by night toward the field.

Darkness muffled moon and star; clouds crowded over the light. The forest path could not be seen, and the monkey guide led them astray in circles. Rama grew furious, stamped his foot until the earth shook, and cried, "Hey, worthless Nilanon, why have you brought me wandering?" Then the mighty lord took the Chanthawathit arrow, set it to the string, raised it, drew, and shot it into the clouds. The sound thundered through sky and earth.

It became three moons, shining with radiant light. Brightness spread over the earth, and the king hurried onward.

When he reached the battlefield and saw his brave younger brother struck by the powerful Mokhasak, the lord of the earth ran to him. With his royal hands he grasped and pulled the spear, but it would not shift or come loose. It was fixed as if nailed down. The king grieved even more deeply. He lowered himself close beside his brother, embraced him, lifted his head into his lap, called back his spirit, gazed at his face, and lamented.

"Alas, beloved companion in hardship, you have suffered so much with me. Your name and power are famed through the whole world; have you now been defeated by this wicked asura? What use was it that we came together from Vaikuntha, intending to destroy unrighteous envy, if you have lost your life and I must go on fighting? Even if I win and regain my wife, but lose my brother, what need have I of anything? If I return to the victorious city, who will count me as a man? Our three royal mothers will grieve and be angry with me without end, saying I loved my wife and sent my younger brother to die. That shame will last through an age. Losing my beloved wife was not enough; now I have lost my younger brother too. Why should I live and endure this pain? I will die with my beloved brother and go to the heavenly city, out of sight of these enemy foes." Lamenting, he embraced Phra Lak, pressed his face to him, and wept until senseless.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha saw the lord grieving. The asura bowed at his feet and said, "Phra Lak of the Solar Line has not yet given up his life. This asura's Mokhasak was bestowed by Brahma. Its power is fierce; whoever is struck cannot pull it out. But there are medicines paired with the victory-spear, given as its remedy. If he is left until the night gives way and sunlight touches him, he will die. Let the son of divine Phra Phai go halt the sun in heaven. Let the sun not yet drive his chariot across Mount Yukunthon. Then have Hanuman gather Tri Chawa and the medicine called Sangkorani from Mount Sapphaya, where they are known on the peak, together with the water of the Five Great Rivers. If all these medicines arrive in time, are ground and smeared upon the noble younger brother, he will not die, and the spear will come loose."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard Phiphek the astrologer, and his anxiety eased somewhat. He gave royal command to battle-skilled Hanuman: "Go halt the sun. Have him pause and not yet move on. Then hurry to gather the medicines as Phiphek the yaksha has specified. The Five Great Rivers' water is in Ayutthaya. Tell both beloved younger brothers that Phra Lak has been struck by the yaksha's spear, and ask for the Pancha-Ganga water to prepare the medicine that cures the demon's spear."

Then Hanuman, strong in fierce power, received the Garuda-mounted lord's command, paid homage, and departed.

He displayed power and boldness until the ten directions shook in fear. He sprang swiftly through the sky and went straight to the summit of Mount Yukunthon.

He saw the Sun driving his chariot, turning along the mountain edge, passing beyond the northern continent, and beginning to open soft light. The wise monkey lord, caring nothing for his own life, leapt with power and seized the rear of the Sun's chariot.

Then the radiant Sun felt the chariot shake and was startled, thinking Rahu had come to attack. He turned his face to look at the rear of the chariot; his fiery glare could have destroyed the noble monkey. He saw only radiant diamond hair and wondered deeply. He stayed silent, gazing for a while, unable to know the reason. "Is it a human, a Garuda, or a god? Who has diamond hair like this?" He thought, "I must restore him and question him, so this doubt becomes clear." Thinking this, he recited a spell three times and blew at once.

Immediately Hanuman appeared in monkey form, shining with radiant light, with earrings, diamond hair, garlands, and jeweled tusks flashing. The divine king gave command: "Hey, bold-hearted monkey! Why do you not fear destruction? Why have you arrogantly come to seize my chariot?"

Then thoughtful Hanuman bowed his head and answered: "I am called Hanuman. I am the servant of the four-armed lord. The king has raised brave armies to subdue the common asuras and fight the war in Lanka. Now the graceful younger brother has been struck by a yaksha's Mokhasak. Phra Narai has sent me to gather medicines, and I cannot return before night ends. Since Your Majesty is about to pour out strong hot light at dawn, Phra Lak will lose his life. He sent me to beg you to pause. Do not yet drive the royal chariot. Let me cure Phra Lak first. I have not come from contempt or boldness of heart to offend beneath your lotus feet."

Then the Sun, powerful in bright rays, heard the son of Vayu's explanation and answered: "To halt the path of the zodiac and leave it broken is impossible. But I will drive the victory-chariot into the folds of cloud, so that no light shines upon the yaksha's Mokhasak. Hurry to gather the medicine and cure the younger brother at once."

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, received the divine command gladly, took leave of the Sun, and flew away.

When he reached Mount Sapphaya, the monkey called out, "Hey, Sangkorani, Tri Chawa! Phra Chakri has sent me to invite you."

Each time he called, they answered; but when he tried to grasp them, he could not find them. He circled and searched until his heart was weary, then climbed to the mountain's summit.

He peered, called, and shouted, and they answered from near the foot of the mountain. The powerful monkey lord joined his hands and transformed his body.

His great long tail coiled and wrapped around the whole bright Mount Sapphaya. As he called, he gathered the mountain upward stage by stage until he reached the summit.

Then he obtained every medicine he had sought. He displayed power like a swift wind and flew bending through the sky, aiming straight for Ayutthaya.

He saw the two lords of the Solar Line, younger brothers of Rama, seated on splendid thrones before the victorious great palace, with ministers, priests, and lesser and greater officers around them. He quickly descended from the sky and came in to offer homage.

Then Phra Phrot of the Solar Line saw the white monkey, bright in complexion, come in and offer joined hands. Wonder and doubt rose in him. He studied the noble monkey's face and gave royal speech: "What is your name? What lineage and monkey clan are you from, and where is your homeland? Why have you come here? Who sent you on this errand, monkey?"

Then brave Hanuman, son of Vayu and skilled in battle, heard the king's command, joined his hands, and answered: "I am the servant of the incarnate lord, named Hanuman, his chief warrior. Now Thotsakan has acted recklessly, not fearing Phra Chakri's power. He secretly stole away the splendid queen, the chief royal consort, and holds her in Lanka city. The four-armed lord gathered brave armies from Chomphu city and Khitkhin, monkey lineages of the earth, seventy-seven samut in number, and went to kill the demons. Today Kumbhakan the yaksha lord fought against glorious Phra Lak. The prince was struck by that one's spear, fixed fast and not loosened from his body. Phra Narai sent me to report to the lotus feet of both noble younger brothers and ask for water of the Five Great Rivers to combine with the medicines I have gathered. The mixture will cure the Mokhasak of the ten-faced lord's younger brother. It must be before the sun rises, so the younger prince may live."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut heard fierce Hanuman name Phra Chakri. They lamented: "How much grief, hardship, and separation from the chief queen has the lord endured! And now Phra Lak, who shares his life, has been struck by the wicked asura's spear." The two kings were startled as if someone had cut off their heads. Tears filled their eyes, and both grieved aloud.

"Alas, wheel-bearing lord, crest of the three worlds and all heaven, have you had to walk through the wilderness, all three of you together? Not only have you endured hardship and toil; you have been separated from the beloved chief queen. You have crossed the great ocean to attack the enemy. It is wasted strength that we, your younger brothers, were born in the same Solar Line as Phra Chakri, yet did not follow the mighty lord to offer our lives beneath his feet. It is as if we had no desire for loyal devotion to our elder king. Only Phra Lak the younger brother went to share Phra Chakri's life as companion in war and battle, until he was struck by the yaksha's weapon." Lamenting, both kings grieved as if life would leave them.

When they had somewhat calmed the grief of separation and sorrow, they commanded brave Hanuman: "Tell Phra Chakri that we two younger brothers bow beneath his splendid feet. To remain in the city is like sleeping in fire; grief never leaves us for a day. Tell him that knowing he suffers the heavy pain of war against the yakshas, to the edge of death, we long to go serve beneath the righteous lord's feet, but fear transgressing his command." Having spoken, they took a jeweled bottle containing the Pancha-Ganga water and gave it to him. "Mighty one, hurry so you arrive before night ends."

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, bowed his head, received the water-vessel, offered joined hands, and departed.

He displayed mighty power until the worlds shook in every direction, sprang upward through the clouds, and turned toward the victorious battlefield.

In the time of a single finger-snap he arrived at the place of the great army, descended quickly from the sky, and went straight before Phra Chakri.

He raised his hands, bowed his head, and paid homage at the splendid feet. He offered the water of the Five Great Rivers together with Sangkorani and Tri Chawa, then reported the message from Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, the two noble younger brothers, to Phra Chakri exactly as commanded.

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri received the medicines from Hanuman, and the sky-lord was pleased that his thought had been fulfilled. He gave them to Phiphek the asura and commanded: "Quickly prepare the powerful medicine to draw out the poison and cure the body of my younger brother."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha received the command. He took every medicine and combined it with the five sacred waters, each thing in equal measure. Setting the mortar before the grinding stone, he honored Brahma in the sixteen worlds, then sat chanting spells while grinding the medicine.

When the medicine was ground in the night, thoughtful Phiphek smeared it upon the victory-spear wound, rubbing, chanting, and blowing over it again and again. The Mokhasak came loose from the body of Rama's younger brother. There was no wound on his body, and the prince revived into clear awareness.

Then Phra Lak, bright in recovered fortune, opened his eyes and saw Phra Chakri. He rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen worlds, rose, bowed his head, and prostrated at the lotus feet. Then he reported in sweet words everything from the start of the march: "I, your small servant, went out to fight and lost position to Kumbhakan the yaksha. Because Your Majesty came to save my life, I did not perish. Your grace is higher than sky and earth; nothing can be compared to it. I ask to serve beneath the feet of the victorious lord until my life ends."

Then the lord who surpasses the three worlds heard his victorious younger brother and gave command: "If your life had ended, my own body would have ended too. I would not have stayed to endure pain; I would have followed you to the far shore of heaven." Having spoken, he ordered the son of the Sun to withdraw the lesser and greater monkey troops and return into the golden victory-pavilion. Their shouts thundered until all worlds shook.

Then the demon watch-post, hidden at the edge of the forest, saw the enemy return to life and saw the monkey army withdraw, shouting until the ground shook. Frightened as if someone had struck them, they hurried into Lanka.
