This is the forty-ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan summoning Kumbhakan after Phra Lak survives the Mokhasak, Kumbhakan's seven-day water-blocking rite, the monkey army's discovery of the dried river, Phiphek's counsel, Hanuman's palace infiltration and flower-attendant disguise, Hanuman breaking the river rite in battle, Kumbhakan's ashamed return to Lanka, the bad omens before his renewed march, and Rama's advance with Phra Lak in the divine chariot.

Translation

Kumbhakan Blocks the River

Then the ten-headed lord of the yaksha Solar Line heard the report as if struck by lightning. He was bewildered and doubtful in his heart. "How could a common human perish and then rise back to life? Hey, Mahothon, hurry and go bring my beloved younger brother here."

Then Mahothon the demon received the command, took leave with homage, and hurried away.

When he arrived, he bowed with joined fingers and reported to the yaksha viceroy: "The enemy has survived. The king now invites Your Majesty to come."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan, skilled in battle, heard Mahothon's words as if someone had pierced his heart with an arrow. He sat stunned and thought in silence, his mind burning as if in flame. Then he rose from his bright jeweled throne and went to attend the lord of Lanka.

He bowed his head before his elder king, in the midst of the demon ministers, and waited to hear the demon lord's command.

Then the bold twenty-handed king saw his brave younger brother and spoke: "Look, Kumbhakan, beloved brother, mighty one whose power shakes the earth. You told me you had won and had killed the human before returning. Now the enemy is strong, not dead, and has taken the army back into the pavilion. Jewel of my eye, what do you think should be done?"

Then thoughtful Kumbhakan heard the lord's command, bowed, and answered: "The Mokhasak spear, excellent weapon, has fierce power and subdues every fate. Whoever is struck by it does not live. This time I am astonished. That traitor Phiphek must have told them the method for curing the Mokhasak. Otherwise, how could Phra Lak have survived and returned to life? The more I think, the more anger burns in me until my chest is tight and almost bleeding from the eyes. I will kill the humans and forest-monkeys by strategy. But let me take leave of Your Majesty to go recite spells and perform a rite. I will hold back the water above the enemy army and close it so it cannot flow down. The enemies will die of thirst by this device, without our having to kill them in battle. Mighty lord, do not order this disclosed to the army."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard his beloved brother and was delighted. The asura embraced him and said, "Your wisdom and skill are not wasted; no equal can be found through the three worlds. Now the humans and forest-monkeys, all of them, will perish. All the people of the city will have supreme happiness. You, mighty one, jewel of my eye, hurry and go."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan, skilled in battle, received the command of his powerful elder brother, raised joined hands, and left the royal hall.

When he reached his bright shining seat, he commanded his attendants, a woman named Kanthamali and four lovely women beloved by the yaksha: "I am going to set up a rite on the riverbank. For seven nights and seven days, gather flowers and bring them to me at every appointed time. Do not tell anyone and make the matter known."

Having given the command, he bathed, dressed in splendor with jewels and pearls, took up a radiant diamond club, and flew up through the sky.

When he reached the bank of the flowing water near Marakat mountain, he saw a great Trang tree by the water, its branches and leaves beautiful to the eye. The ground beneath was shaded and level like a mirror, with a stone slab under the tree. He mounted the stone seat, closed his eyes, recited spells, and composed his mind.

In a moment he changed his body and form, becoming as huge as great Brahma. The asura moved down into the watercourse.

He stretched his body across the middle of the water and recited sacred spells. He sank beneath the river so his asura body could not be seen. The water rose, circled back, and did not flow toward the victorious pavilion. Through the power of the rite, the water dried entirely down to sand and earth.

Then the monkey warriors, when golden light shone across the bright sky, masters and soldiers went to the river.

When they reached the bank, the monkeys were about to wash their faces. They saw the water dry down to the surface of the earth and were astonished. Each was distressed that they would die of thirst. Masters and soldiers shook in alarm. The monkey troops ran in confusion, some talking together in an uproar.

They could not discover the reason. Suffering, they sighed deeply, searched through the watercourse, saw nothing, and returned.

When they reached the son of the Sun, the monkeys bowed before him and reported: "Now the Ganga, the great watercourse that all monkey troops and warriors have relied on for bathing and drinking, has dried away down to hard ground. Disaster has arisen in the river."

Then Sukhrip, skilled in victory, heard this and was deeply alarmed. He brought the monkeys into the pavilion.

He bowed his head and reported to the royal lord, crest of the worlds: "Now the monkey warriors went down to the riverbank, and the water has somehow dried up entirely. The monkeys cannot drink. I think it strange and wrong. How has this happened?"

Then the splendid lord of the three worlds heard and was stunned through his whole body. The king wondered deeply and asked the diligent astrologer: "Phraya Kumbhakan the mighty won against Phra Lak yesterday. Why has the yaksha lord not raised an army? And the water in the Ganga has dried away. I am suspicious and doubtful. What is the cause and battle-trick of the asura? What deception has he made?"

Then wise Phiphek heard the lord of the three worlds and bowed to answer: "The reason Phraya Kumbhakan has not raised his army to fight is that he has gone to establish a rite, reciting spells to hold back the water in the river. He hopes to cut the root of the war by this deep yaksha device. The Ganga has dried away so the monkeys cannot bathe or drink. If the full term of seven days is completed, our troops will all die. This rite surpasses heaven and earth; the asura learned it from Brahma."

Then Phra Rama, Narai of the Solar Line, heard Phiphek the astrologer and asked, "Where has Kumbhakan the yaksha gone to perform this rite? What plan can we devise to destroy it?"

Then Phiphek of the Solar Line heard the righteous lord's royal command, bowed, and answered: "As for the place where the rite is set, your servant at the lotus feet does not know it. Only the inner attendants close to the asura know. Let powerful Hanuman go and overlay a trick upon Kumbhakan's trick. Let him transform into a woman and enter in disguise to speak with the attendants. Then he will learn where the demon lord has gone to recite his spells. He must hurry after him and destroy the rite; then the water will flow down again."

Then the jeweled wheel-bearing lord heard Phiphek the astrologer and gave royal command: "Look, fierce son of Vayu, you of bold and terrible power. Go destroy the demon lord's rite by your monkey wisdom."

Then glorious Hanuman, skilled in battle, received the command of powerful Phra Narai, raised joined hands, and crawled out.

He bowed with joined fingers to the self-born lord, recited sacred spells, and transformed his monkey body.

His body became a hawk, with strength like a royal bird. He glided and soared by his power toward Kumbhakan's asura palace.

Floating in the air above the shining jeweled palace, he saw the attendants laughing and playing on the terrace. Pleased that his thought had worked, delighted in his heart, he circled and descended near the radiant great palace.

He hid behind the door-leaves, out of sight of the lovely attendants, and recited a powerful spell to transform his body.

He changed into a female attendant, beautiful in complexion, slender, graceful, and charming, and walked out with a delicate gesture.

He sat among all the women, laughing and greeting them all. Then, feigning ignorance, he asked by trickery: "I find this strange. Our lord Phraya Kumbhakan has not gone out to fight. Where has he gone today? Or is he in the radiant palace?"

Then the lovely attendants heard and answered: "This is not your business. Do not speak of it. The great viceroy, righteous royal lord, has gone to set up a spell-rite in the great Ganga. He lies across the middle of the water, reciting spells to hold it back so it will not flow. The humans and forest-monkeys will perish by his power."

Then Hanuman in the form of the lovely woman heard the asura woman's words, pretended to rejoice, and answered: "I have been sick for many days, alas, and did not know in time. Now the enemy will perish, and we will have happiness always. I only fear Phiphek the enemy may learn the yaksha trick and tell Phra Lak and Phra Rama to destroy the spell-rite."

Then the lovely asura woman thought he was a fellow attendant and did not suspect an enemy. She smiled and said, "What you say is entirely right. But even if anyone in the whole earth should hear our speech and go looking for the yaksha king, how would they know the place? Only Kanthamali and the four women who gather flowers and bring them to the asura king at every appointed time know it. No one else knows. Do not imagine even wise Phiphek could tell the enemies."

Then Hanuman in the form of the divine woman learned the attendant's words and was delighted. He spoke a twisting deception: "I have forgotten the flower-garland." Having said this, he walked out from the group of inner asura women.

When he was far from the royal residence, out of sight where no one saw him, the wise monkey lord composed his mind and transformed his body.

He changed into a strong hawk, his two eyes like bright jewels. By his power he flew and glided straight to the flower garden.

He folded his wings, turned and circled, then settled on a tree branch, watching for the five lovely women to come gather flowers.

Then Kanthamali and the four beautiful women, when evening was near, bathed, powdered themselves, dressed, anointed their hair with oil, combed it, and painted their faces. Their soft radiance was bright and pleasing to the eye. Their clothing was splendid and graceful. Each woman was lovely and complete; whoever saw them delighted in them. Slender like kinnara goddesses, they moved with graceful hands toward the flower garden.

When they reached the garden, the five demon beauties were cheerful. Every woman laughed brightly, teasing and joking with the others. They went about gathering flowers: jasmine, Sukrom and heavenly blossoms, tuberose, phikul, jasmine vine, kannika, karaket, prayong, roses, khatkhao, saoyut, red lotuses, champa, maha-hong, yisun, bunnak, linchong, kalong, lamduan, and saraphi. As they gathered, they sang plaintive songs, lingering and soft, competing to pluck the flower-clusters while the lovely women wound through the garden.

Then Hanuman, as the great hawk, perched hidden on a banyan branch and looked out at the attendants. They were splendid in beauty, their faces like heavenly apsaras, the five lovely women gathering flowers together. One woman stopped to choose blossoms far from the other four. The monkey lord looked carefully over her whole body and memorized every detail. Pleased that his plan had worked and intending to take her life, he swooped straight down, seized the attendant with his talons, and carried her away.

He was swift as a diamond wind; the other four women did not know. He crushed her to death in the open sky. When the killing was done, he spread his wings and glided through the air, circling back down to the asura flower garden.

He slipped into a bush, hidden from the eyes of the four inner women. Leaving the bird-form, the monkey lord recited a spell and transformed his body.

He became the form of the slender woman, graceful, charming, and bright, exactly like the woman he had carried away and killed. He walked gracefully, gathering flowers.

Then the four thoughtful women believed he was their companion and did not know the monkey trick. They sat down and arranged the flowers in a shining jeweled tray. When the sun's light leaned westward, they hurried along the path.

When they reached the bank of the water by the great thick-leaved Trang tree, they sat beside the stone seat and set down the tray of flowers. They raised joined fingers above their heads and worshiped the yaksha's spell-rite. Every woman rejoiced with a heart devoted to the demon king.

Then the brave son of Vayu, having come in disguise with the attendants, pretended to set down his tray in worship. He saw the water heaped and circling, not flowing eastward. Studying it wisely, he understood that Phraya Kumbhakan was down in the watercourse. The monkey rejoiced, honored righteous Phra Isuan, and recited a powerful spell.

In a moment his body changed back into the splendid son of Phra Phai: earrings, radiant diamond hair, jeweled tusks, huge as great Brahma, towering like Mount Meru. He displayed fierce power and stamped his monkey foot.

Then the four yaksha attendants saw the mighty monkey displaying terrible power. Startled and pale, their spirits gone, unable to look at him, they screamed in terror and ran, stumbling and senseless.

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, displayed power, split the water, and went down.

He saw Phraya Kumbhakan with his body transformed to giant size, lying across the middle of the water and blocking it by his power. The son of Phra Phai drew the Trident of Diamond from his body, brandished it, raised it high, leapt, and kicked the asura with his monkey strength.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan, skilled in battle, saw the powerful monkey splitting the water and coming after him to attack. Furious as kindled fire, he drew his yaksha club, rose up from the water, and rushed to fight Hanuman.

Each stabbed and blocked in confusion. The water rolled in waves and splashed. The sound thundered down to Badan, and the river flowed down again.

Then brave Hanuman, chief warrior, dodged and parried quickly, wheeled around, pursued, and seized the demon.

He stepped on Kumbhakan's knee, pulled at his head, and raised the trident, moving as quickly as a spinning wheel. They struck, stabbed, and cut each other, twisting back and forth in a tangled fight.

Then mighty Kumbhakan stamped his foot, leapt in, and attacked to kill and fight.

He sprang onto the monkey's shoulder and fought to snatch the noble monkey's diamond trident. They turned and grappled in holds until the asura struck Hanuman.

Then the brave son of Vayu, mighty in wisdom and courage, grew angry like doomsday fire and surged in to seize the asura.

He leapt up and stood firm on Kumbhakan's shoulder, warded off the yaksha club, and stabbed with the powerful diamond trident, striking the demon king's body.

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed king had no strength and no plan left to fight. He could no longer contend with the monkey. He thought silently: "This monkey is bold and skilled in battle. If I stay and fight and am defeated by this cursed one's power, I will be ashamed before the gods in the sixteen worlds, disgraced through the three realms. It will waste the honor of my birth in the four-faced Brahma's line, with such mighty power and glory." Thinking this, the demon king did not continue killing or fighting. He flew up into the folds of cloud and fled back into Lanka city.

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, having destroyed the rite and seen Kumbhakan flee back, rose from the riverbank, displayed earth-shaking power, sprang swiftly through the sky, and went straight to the golden pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the lord of the earth how he had fought the asura until the yaksha fled into the city.

Then splendid Phra Krishnuharak heard the grandson of Pali and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen worlds. He praised his power: "You whose power is as bright as burning fire, you are truly worthy to be the son of Vayu. Wherever I send you, you accomplish all I intend. No enemy, in any of the ten directions, can withstand you." Having spoken, he moved with royal grace into the golden pavilion.

Kumbhakan Marches Again

Then Kumbhakan the yaksha, when he reached victorious Lanka, went up into the royal hall.

He bowed his head and paid homage to his elder king, sighing heavily in misery, his face lowered, unable to speak.

Then Raphanasura the yaksha king saw the brother who shared his life acting strangely and gave command: "Life of my life, what has happened? You secretly went out to set up the rite in the Ganga. Before seven days had passed, what happened, younger brother, that you hurried back, your face senseless?"

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard the royal words. The asura's heart was choked and blocked; he hardly wished to speak or answer the command. Then he reported: "I secretly went to set up the rite in the water. By the power of spell-knowledge the whole current dried away down to the floor of the earth, not enough left even to scoop up and drink. Hanuman followed me down into the water, fought there, and destroyed the rite. For that reason I have returned. Shame and anger are beyond thought, as if my life would end. Tomorrow I will take leave in homage and go kill them, avenging this."

Then the ten-faced lord of the Solar Line learned that the rite had failed. The demon was stricken and distressed. He sat rigid, stunned, and thought in silence, his mind burning like venomous flame. Then he spoke: "The enemy could do this because that traitor Phiphek told the trick to the human and the noble monkeys. Otherwise, how could the enemy know the rite? It is wasted effort that he was born from the same womb as us; I raised him as if raising a beast. When you go out to fight, destroy him and kill him. Then he cannot remain as a hidden enemy, telling them deep and shallow matters in the future. As for the humans and monkeys who have come, I think their lives will end."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard his elder brother's words, and they were like divine water mixed into his heart. He grew full and strong, his power swelling; pride returned to him. He bowed, took leave of the victory hall, and went straight to his jeweled palace.

When he arrived, he commanded the demon officers: "Hurry to prepare the fourfold army, warriors fierce in battle, and the war-chariot, deep and strange, harnessed with lions. Tomorrow I will raise the army and fight the humans and monkeys."

Then the battle-skilled demon officers received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and hurried out.

They arranged the bold fourfold army, selecting only capable, brave warriors. Elephant lords rode victory-tusked elephants, holding curved pikes. Horse lords carried spears, wheeling and riding quickly in bright display. Chariot lords rode in rows of chariots, all holding golden standards upright. The foot-soldiers were all fierce, black-bodied and strong, some holding stone-slabs, some carrying bows and arrows. Each one boasted terrible power and brandished raised weapons. They also prepared the splendid royal chariot, waiting for the asura king to come.

Then mighty Kumbhakan, when moonlight shone through sky and earth, entered his bedchamber.

He reclined upon the couch, raised a hand across his yaksha face, and thought silently about raising the army for victory and avenging the enemy hosts. Then he sighed deeply. "This time the humans and forest-monkeys are very powerful and capable. Their bodily strength is great, and they are clever and sharp. They have the yaksha lord Phiphek as their eye to tell them matters. That is why I have lost position to the enemy and lost my plan to that beast. Otherwise Phra Lak would have died by the divine spear I hurled." His mind was clouded and choked with anger. He could not sleep until dawn began to clear, and then he went to bathe in the river.

Jeweled sprinklers poured like rain. He was perfumed with flower-fragrance, put on splendid trousers and cloth worked with dancing kinnari figures, a royal upper garment, small bracelets, dark green jeweled armor, a chest-strap set with yellow sapphires, direction-plates, chains, jewel tassels and pearls, a breast-ornament with coral and rubies, golden armlets with coiled dragon forms, rings with Garuda settings, earrings like diamond scales, and bright jeweled ear-pieces. He took up the great mighty bow and stepped into the divine chariot.

He ordered the charioteer to wave the banner and set the fourfold warriors in motion, in the demon lord's army formation, out through the gate of the victorious city.

When he came outside the royal residence, strange events and great omens arose. Elephants and horses panicked in confusion. The demon king's chariot did not rumble or shake along its wheels. The thousand lions harnessed to it turned their faces into donkey faces. Spirits and ghosts of all four kinds showed themselves, moving across and blocking the road. Crows and vultures flew wheeling down and swooped upon the victory banner. The music and drums had no sound; the voices of the troops shouting were like weeping. The lines of banners did not wave; forest spirits cried out in a chilling voice. The demon king's mind trembled in fear because of omens he had never seen. All kinds of portents arose without cease, but he was forced to hurry the chariot onward.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army and sat near a mountain slope, waiting for the powerful human army to come out.

Then the jeweled wheel-bearing lord lay upon his splendid couch. The sky-lord pondered and thought over the war for victory, not sleeping deeply, until the moon's bright light weakened and the sun rose shining. Cuckoos called sweetly, birds cried out, and bees hummed as they tasted flower-dust.

He purified himself and dressed in splendor like Indra. He took the powerful Brahmastra bow and came out before the pavilion.

The monkey kings were present, raising joined hands on every side. When a tumult was heard, the sky-lord asked Phiphek: "The army raised to fight: is it Kumbhakan the asura, or some other demon coming out to battle?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered: "The army that has come out is Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha. Today his life will end, for his fate has reached the killing point under the moon-lagna. Let the four-armed lord raise the monkey army and go destroy the demon, ending his life."

Then Phra Rama, Narai of the splendid Solar Line, heard Phiphek the asura and was pleased that the thought was fulfilled. His face shone like the moon. He gave command to the son of the Sun: "You of mighty power and wisdom, quickly levy the many warriors, the brave monkey troops, and prepare the divine jeweled chariot. I will go fight the asura."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, glorious monkey lord, received Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and came out.

He arranged the army in the form of Garuda or an eagle. Nilrat was the bird's head; Nilek and Nilakhan were the two eyes; the mouth was Pingkhala the monkey. Chomphuphan was the neck; fierce Hanuman was the crest. The right wing was powerful Angkhot, the left wing Kesarathamala. Nilapasan was placed as the left foot; Nilpanan was the right foot. The body was the great host, and the tail was Phraya Nilanon. The outer guards were the bird's talons; all the warriors were feather-markings. Every one held weapons, eager, proud, and bold for battle. Masters and soldiers all had power, were brave and fierce, and waited in battle-eagerness for the four-armed lord.

Then the bow-bearing lord of the imperial line invited powerful Phra Lak, and they went to bathe.

The two kings purified themselves by bathing. Fragrant perfumes and flower-pollen spread their scent. They put on trousers set with dark jewels, with serpent-spray borders, and silk cloths of different colors worked with sevenfold vines and swan-scrolls. Hanging side-panels and upper garments, breastplates and chains, direction-plates, jewel tassels, diamond armlets, gold bracelets cut with coiled dragon forms, and rings with Garuda settings adorned them. Each wore a crown with flowers tucked in, girded on a diamond sword, and took up a bow. Beautiful as the sun and moon, they went to mount the royal chariot.

O divine royal chariot: the curved yoke was graceful and fine, jeweled spokes joined the wheels, and hub and rim shone bright with gems. Carved figures encircled the throne, panels and backrest were covered in hanging scrolls, the four-faced structure was lovely as a floating palace, and beautiful parasols hung from its sides. Divine horses, fierce as lions, were harnessed to it. Phra Lak sat in front with joined hands. The royal regalia rose in alternating rows. Matali the divine charioteer drove the horses, springing like a spinning wheel. Dust darkened the air like smoke; pipes and drums thundered; the sounds of chariots, horses, and armies roared together. The troops, proud and eager, urged one another on and hurried forward.

When they reached the battlefield, the lord of the three worlds, bow-bearing lord of the Solar Line, halted the great army to observe the asura's fierce strength.
