Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives the Mani Mekhala and Ramasun episode, Phra Arachun's death and the tilting and restoration of Mount Meru, Pali's reward and his taking of Dara, Thotsarot's Ayutthaya birth-line, the frog's transformation into Montho, and Kala Naga's attack on the demon frontier.

Translation

Mani Mekhala, Ramasun, and Phra Arachun

Now the tale will speak of all the companies of gods. When the spring season came, they rejoiced and took pleasure in festival. They invited one another out to play on the auspicious day. All the divine dwellings were noisy with joy; every palace gathered together, and the revels became a great tumult.

They began a dance, stretching and turning their hands to left and right. The women moved in ranks, pressed close, slipped through, and caught one another in play. They turned and danced again, changing places, brushing together without distance. They teased, touched, blocked, and passed each other by. Some snatched a woman on the left, then shifted to tease one on the right. All the gods rejoiced with the beautiful heavenly women.

Then the young heavenly maidens danced as if drawing the gods onward, but would not be caught. They were delighted, glancing sidelong. When a god came close, a woman twisted away, danced with feigned delay, and would not let him near. She slipped aside, circled around, and watched for her moment with playful eyes. When a divine youth tried to seize her, she blocked him off and shook herself free. All gods and goddesses were filled with pleasure and delight.

Then Phra Arachun, brave and strong, learned that the gods and heavenly women had invited one another to play. He rejoiced, adorned himself with ornaments, took his shining sword in hand, came out of his jeweled palace, and flew to the assembly of gods.

He moved about, looking at the gods and the heavenly women in the sky. Together they enjoyed gladness in the heavenly realm.

Then Mani Mekhala, a goddess who lived in a jeweled palace and guarded the great ocean, prepared herself. She was accustomed to joining the gods at their assemblies and never failed to come. When the appointed season arrived, the lovely one rejoiced. She adorned her body with shining ornaments, took the jewel in her hand, and left her palace.

She came down from the banks of cloud and played joyfully with the heavenly women. They sang and danced back and forth.

Now the tale will speak of the yaksha Ramasun. He lived among the clouds in pleasure and ease. He held a diamond axe as his weapon, and his violent power was rough, fierce, and brave. All six heavens and the underworld feared the demon lord's majesty and could not withstand him. Swollen with pride, bearing himself like a lion, he adorned his body, took up the axe of destructive power, and flew away.

He moved swiftly as wind, wheeling through the sky. Looking out from the cloud-bank, the asura saw the bright jewel which Mekhala was tossing in play. The more he saw it, the more it pleased him; the more he gazed, the more his heart was fixed on it. He wanted to possess that wish-jewel. He clenched his teeth, tightened his stare, raised the diamond axe in his hand, leaped into the clouds, and chased Mekhala with his power.

Then all the gods and heavenly women saw Ramasun the asura pursuing and attacking. They were terrified. Faces turned pale, bodies trembled, spirits fled. In confusion they lost all composure; a roar and murmur spread everywhere, and the heavenly beings ran into one another.

The heavenly women led and carried the divine youths away. The whole heaven fell into disorder. Cymbals, clappers, drums, and tabors broke apart in confusion.

The divine youths and heavenly women could not bear to look at the yaksha's face. Afraid as if life were ending, they fled back to their divine palaces.

Then brave-hearted Ramasun saw the gods and lovely women running in panic. Only beautiful Mekhala remained, hiding beside a great bank of cloud. The asura displayed his power, leaping and rushing after her.

Then lovely Mekhala turned and lured Ramasun onward, tossing the jewel in her hand. She acted as if she would give him the gem, rolling its flashing light over her palm. When Ramasun turned in pursuit, the maiden danced to lure the asura. She deliberately wheeled and swerved, circling through the zodiacal path. With one hand she raised the jewel and made sport of the asura.

Then Ramasun the yaksha, seeing the jewel's flickering light strike his eye, burned with anger like fire. "Hey, hey, Mekhala! I will end your life." He swung the diamond axe like a flame and hurled it with the strength of his power.

It did not touch the maiden's body. The yaksha grew furious and rushed on, chasing close behind, reaching and grabbing for the young woman.

He came upon Phra Arachun, glorious in power and bold strength, sword in hand, flying across his path. Ramasun was angered. He gnashed his teeth, showed his force, shouted until everything trembled, and cried: "Who is this arrogant one? What is your name, that you dare fly proudly across my face? I am mighty Ramasun the asura. I have subdued the three worlds; every company of divine guardians fears my power. You do not know the heap of fire before you. Today your life will be finished."

Then Phra Arachun, strong in fierce power, heard him and grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. His body trembled, and he answered: "You ask my name? I am Arachun, brave in strength. I fly by the road of clouds; I have not stepped on the demon lord's head. What are you, to boast of such bold power? I too am counted a warrior, famous through all three realms. Thotsakan, with ten heads and twenty hands, I have seized and bound. How will you, with only two hands, escape with your life?"

Then mighty Ramasun the yaksha heard Phra Arachun's words and burned with anger as if fire were consuming the sky. He grasped and brandished the diamond axe, red-eyed and fixed on slaughter, then displayed his vast power and charged the god.

Phra Arachun bravely received him, warded him off, and leaped in against the kumbhanda.

With his left hand he caught the asura's head; with his right he raised the sword. They turned and fought close, and the sound shook the clouds.

Then Ramasun the yaksha fought the god hand to hand and leaped up by his power to stand on Arachun's shoulder.

He seized the god's crest-knot and raised the axe to kill him by the strength of the yaksha. Phra Arachun, radiant in hostile power, shook the asura off at once. He leaped up onto the yaksha's shoulder and struck with his right hand using the sword. Ramasun received and parried the blow, turned, and flung him away. Phra Arachun slipped from the shoulder. The yaksha caught both his feet and smashed him against the edge of great Mount Meru, shaking the three worlds.

The holy Mount Meru tilted and sank under that fierce, violent power. Phra Arachun the god died at once.

When Ramasun had won the battle, he rejoiced. He swung his axe like a flash of lightning and flew quickly back to his dwelling.

Mount Meru Is Set Upright

[Slow]

Then the lord of great Kailasa saw Mount Meru leaning down and was startled through his whole body.

He gave a sovereign command and sent brave Chitubot: "Proclaim to all the gods, gandharvas, garudas, nagas, the two monkey lords who rule Khitkhin, all sages, vidyadharas, and asuras. Tell everyone in the world to come."

Then Chitubot the radiant god bowed his head to receive Phra Suli's command, displayed his power, and flew away.

He proclaimed it through every heavenly level, the earth, the underworld below, and victorious Khitkhin city, according to Phra Suli's command.

Then gods of every rank, sages, vidyadharas, nagas, and all who lived within the circuit of the universe, together with mighty King Kakasa and his brave younger brother Sukhrip, flew upward and went to Mount Kailasa.

When they arrived, they went up together to attend the radiant lord of the three worlds. They bowed their heads and offered joined hands with joy.

Then Phra Suli, lord of the three worlds, saw the divine youths, garudas, and all the assembly gathered before him, including the monkey lord born from Indra and the monkey prince born from the Sun. He set out, and all the gods followed him.

When they reached the place, he had nagas twisted into a rope and wound around the summit of great Mount Meru. The sages, vidyadharas, and gods of heaven took hold of the naga-rope together. When the auspicious time arrived, Kosiy blew the conch in a great sound. The gods pulled together in confusion, shouting until all three realms echoed.

But though they dragged and pulled, the leaning Mount Meru would not move. The sages, vidyadharas, and gods of heaven lost heart and spent their strength.

Then Sukhrip, fierce and strong, saw that Mount Meru had not returned upright. He bowed his head and said: "I will volunteer to pull up the leaning Mount Meru. Lord who sustains the three worlds, do not be troubled beneath your feet."

Having spoken, the son of the Sun, strong and brave in power, urged the divine youths and garudas to pull and jerk the naga-rope. Then he pressed his forefinger down at the navel of the great naga-rope. It startled and coiled inward at once, and Mount Meru shifted.

Then the brave son of Thao Makhawan saw Mount Meru move by Sukhrip's sharp wisdom. He rejoiced as if he had gained heavenly treasure. Displaying power, he braced himself and pushed with his monkey shoulder.

Mount Meru stood straight and firm as before. All the gods shouted until the worlds shook.

Then Indra, Brahma, the gods, gandharvas, garudas, sages, and vidyadharas of all three realms saw that leaning Mount Meru had risen straight again as before. Laughing and relieved, they went in to bow before Phra Suli.

Then Phra Swayambhu, radiant lord, was filled with joy and gave a royal divine proclamation. He praised the wisdom of the brave son of the Sun: "You are bold and wise, and worthy of the station of monkey viceroy. As for King Kakasa, lordly monkey, he has not failed as ruler of Khitkhin. Let your fame be known on the earth; may your prosperity endure."

Then the two monkey lords, skilled in war, together with gandharvas, garudas, vidyadharas, and the companies of gods in all three realms, bowed farewell to great Phra Isara. They flew swiftly through the sky and returned to their own joyful dwellings.

Then Phra Swayambhu, lord and refuge, when the work of Mount Meru was finished, returned to great Mount Kailasa.

Pali Receives Dara and Breaks His Oath

Then King Kakasa, radiant in splendor, when golden light shone over sky and earth, entered the bathing pool and washed. He adorned himself, took his sharp sword in hand, flew upward through the clouds, and went to great Mount Kailasa.

When he reached the divine king's place, he raised his hands above his head and bowed. Phra Isuaro Moli sat in the midst of the gods.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, saw King Kakasa come up. He rejoiced and said: "Look, son of Indra, bold one. You brothers are wise and have done a great deed. Your merit surpasses the three worlds, and I will reward you now. King Kakasa shall be called radiant Pali Thirat. I give you the diamond trident of power. If an enemy comes to fight you, let that enemy be defeated before you, descendant of the divine guardians. Like a tiger facing the king of lions, let his strength fall away from its power and be added to the monkey by half his body."

Then he took a jeweled casket shining like the sky, put beautiful Dara inside it, and said: "We entrust her to you for your younger brother, heir of the Sun's line."

Then Phra Narai raised his hands to answer the command: "Lord who passes over the sky, I do not approve entrusting this woman to the noble monkey so that she may be given to Sukhrip. It is like a bee and a garland; such is their nature from the beginning. A bee near the pollen of a flower, how could it not taste the flower? To entrust an egg to a crow would also be wrong. Then King Sukhrip, the younger brother, will not receive beloved Dara. Crown of heaven, lord of the earth, consider this carefully."

Then brave-hearted King Pali heard Phra Narai speak. He bowed his head and answered: "If you, mighty lord, have doubt and suspicion, I ask to swear truth beneath the feet of the lord of the world. If I do not give her to my brother, and instead keep her in my own chamber as my beloved, may the powerful arrow of the Lord of the Discus burn away my monkey life."

Then the crown of Kailasa and the four-armed Phra Narai heard Pali swear truth with his life. Both powerful lords were pleased, and they sent the jeweled casket to the mighty monkey.

Then Pali, having received the shining casket with bowed head, flew to Khitkhin city.

When he arrived, he went up onto the jeweled dais and opened the casket bright with radiance. He saw the form of the goddess Dara, more beautiful than women in Indra's city.

[Praise of Beauty]

Looking at her face, it shone like the moon. Looking at her brows, they were like a crafted bow. Looking at her eyes, they were like a deer's eyes. Looking at her teeth, they were like rows of black gems. Looking at her lips, they seemed about to smile. Looking at her nose, it was lovely and bright. Looking at her cheeks, they were like shining gold. Looking at her ears, they were like flowers. Looking at her breasts, they were like golden lotuses. Looking at her neck, it was lovely like a swan's neck. Looking at her arms, they were like an elephant's trunk. Looking at her form, it pleased the eye in all its beauty. The more he looked, the more passion overwhelmed him; he grew bewildered with desire. He forgot to think of his younger brother, and he forgot the truthful oath he had sworn.

Then young Dara, jewel among women, came out of the divine jeweled casket. When the maiden saw King Pali, she felt shy and uneasy. She drew back in fear, pressed her hands together, bowed her head silently, turned away, and did not speak.

[Chatri]

Pali said, "Beloved, dear younger one, lovely summit of affection, I love you beyond love, as my own eye and life. I will establish you as chief beneath the white parasol. You will be the crown of the women of the inner palace, free from stain or trouble."

As he spoke, he drew closer, kissed and gazed on the radiant woman, and stroked her body with both hands. "Beloved one, have pity."

Dara answered: "My lord, please show favor to my head. Why do this, transgressing Phra Suli's command? Think again and do not be overcome by desire. I was bestowed here for mighty King Sukhrip. Remember the vow you swore before the lord who bears the arrow. Besides, the king's inner women are all lovely."

[Soothing]

Pali said, "Jewel of my heart, beautiful one who delights me, the words you speak are not words to be said now. If the lord truly meant to give your lovely body to King Sukhrip, my younger brother, he would not have sent you here in this way. I have merit before his feet, and therefore he bestowed you as my reward. Heavenly maiden, heart of the sky, why remain troubled and doubtful?"

As he spoke, he reached toward her again. "Alas, can you not see my heart? My love has multiplied beyond measure. Lovely one, be merciful."

Dara said: "Mighty lord, if you will not show favor, why chase and grasp at me? It is pitiful to the heart." As she spoke, she shook off his arms, scratched, frowned, and pushed him away. "Is this what you call mercy and affection? How can you do such a thing?"

Pali said: "Beloved beyond all love, tender-bodied lovely one, flower of the heavens, have pity. Do not make me suffer so deeply." As he spoke, he leaned close against her, praised the golden flower to left and right, praised the maiden's eyes and cheeks, and desire pressed hard upon his heart. As wind striking the ocean makes great waves rise and surge, the fish rejoice happily in the sea.

Then jewel-like Dara, beloved of the heart, had joined mighty Pali. The young woman rejoiced. Having first known the taste of love, she delighted in affection. She forgot the lord of the world, forgot beautiful Phra Uma, forgot shame and her own restraint, forgot her friends the heavenly maidens, and forgot even the son of the Sun. The maiden was filled with pleasure and delight.

Thotsarot of Ayutthaya

[Slow]

Then the tale turns to radiant Thao Atchaban, who ruled the city of Ayutthaya with his beautiful chief queen, named Thep Apsorn, lovely as a heavenly woman. She was attended by sixteen thousand young women. The king had a royal son, shining like the clear sun, named Prince Thotsarot. The lord of the sky loved him greatly, cherished and raised him like his own eye, and hoped that he would adorn the world and the kingdom, making firm the line of Hari and serving as the pillar of glorious Ayutthaya.

Kings from every land offered golden flowers. Merchants and traders of many kinds brought tribute. Jewels in the belly of the ocean rose up with the waves by the prince's merit. The whole city was filled with delight and joy.

The Frog Who Became Montho

[Rai]

Now the tale will speak of the ascetic Atanta Rishi, Phra Wachira Muni, Phra Witsut of great meditation, and Phra Maha Romasing. All four were supreme in the Brahma abodes. They had been ordained for a long time, reckoned at thirty thousand years, dwelling in the Himmaphan mountains. The four practiced vows and austerity, were skilled in rites, and their huts stood close together.

They had five hundred milk-cows released in the forest. Each morning the cows came to the ascetics' leaf-hall.

They let drops of milk fall into a jeweled basin. When this was finished, they wandered away. At the time for taking milk, the hermits came together.

The four sat in order on a stone seat and drank the milk. They gave a set share to a female frog out of compassion and kindness.

When they had finished eating the cow's milk, the four ascetics took basket and carrying-pole and went out into the Himmaphan forest.

Then Nang Anong Naki, lovely daughter of Phaya Kala Naga, became shaken by passion. Desire for the taste of love seized her, and the young woman could not restrain herself. The underworld seemed to her like the middle of a fire; not for a single night did she have peace. Wishing to go to the human world and cool the burning grief in her heart, she pierced upward through the earth and came to Himmaphan.

When she reached a sandy rise by the sea, she stopped in a private place. The more she thought, the more she burned and fretted. The young woman transformed her body.

At once she became a young maiden, graceful as a divine drawing. She moved with lovely steps and went along the forest path, winding by streams and rivulets in the great Himmaphan wood. Her eyes searched this way and that, for her heart was seeking a male.

[4 words, Praise of the Male]

She found no human or god. Her wish went unfulfilled; the fire of passion burned through her body. Then the radiant woman glanced aside and saw a male earth-snake crawling at the edge of the great path. Unable to restrain desire, she rejoiced and returned to naga form.

She joined with the earth-snake in pleasure and closeness, coiling around him in the forest.

[2 words, Khuk Phat]

Then the four great ascetics, wandering there, saw the naga woman taking pleasure with the earth-snake. They stopped, stood watching, and wondered silently: "Why should one of the naga kind take delight in a low-born creature? She does not preserve her own rank or care for herself. She mixes with a crow and ruins the lineage of swans. What a pity for her noble family, that she is lost in a lover in the middle of the road."

Having thought this, one tapped with his staff, striking the coil of her tail. Seeing that she still clung and would not release, he tapped again in the middle of her body.

Then Nang Anong Naki, lovely in passion, was startled and loosened her coils. She opened her eyes and saw the four sages. Deep shame and disgrace came over her, as if her body would melt into the ground. She pierced through the earth and fled to the realm of the underworld.

Then the four lords of Brahma-kindness saw the naga woman flee through the earth. They returned to their huts.

Then beautiful Nang Anong Naki reached the naga realm and brooded in anger against the holy ascetics. "These four sages are my enemies. They have brought me terrible shame. If my royal father learns of this, I will die under the king's punishment. If these ascetics do not die, I will not escape the shame. I must kill them and make them perish." Having thought this, she went back up to their hermitage.

When she reached the ascetics' hall, she saw the basin of their milk and at once spat poison into it. Having done this, the goddess returned.

Then the female frog, who had understanding, saw the naga spit poison into the basin. Startled, she reflected: "Why is this naga woman so sinful, harsh, corrupt, and jealous? She means to kill the holy ascetics, who are merciful and strong in vows. I have depended on these holy ones; they have kept my life in happiness and ease. Their kindness is immeasurable. If I know this matter and stay silent, it is not good. It would be as if I had no gratitude and did not know the kindness of the great sages. Enough. I will give my life and die in place of my benefactors. By the power of this excellent truth, may I be born as a human in a later life."

Having thought this, she leaped swiftly down into the milk and died from the naga poison.

Then the four ascetics, strong in vows, when the dawn cleared with the light of the sun, came out of their hall together.

They reached the stone floor and sat on the seat where they usually ate. Seeing the frog fallen dead, the righteous ascetics were displeased and thought: "This frog is of animal birth and greedy beyond measure. Even though we give it food, it is never satisfied. It went down and ate in the basin until it died. But if we do not help its life, our fruitful compassion will be impaired." Having thought this, the four sages lifted it out with tongs, blew mantra over it, and it lived again.

They said, "Hey, common frog, you are very greedy for food. We feed you at every time; it is not as if you were ever starving."

Then the female frog bowed at the feet of the sages and said: "I died because the naga woman came and spat poison into the basin of milk. I was anxious for the holy ones, afraid that you would die, and so I thought to repay the kindness of the sages."

Then the four great ascetics heard the frog's speech and rejoiced. They consulted together: "It seems that corrupt naga woman spat poison to make us die. The frog gave up her life; otherwise we would have perished. Enough. We will revive her as a woman. We will gather and place in her every beautiful thing, exhausting the beauty of the heavenly women of heaven, making her surpass the three worlds."

Having spoken, they set up the ritual fire-pit. The offering-fire blazed fiercely with strong light, and its yellow flame shone up into the sky. The four ascetics sat in the four directions and recited the sacred syllable and the great Vedic formula, marvelous and suited to this rite. They placed the frog in the blazing fire and transformed her by the power of the holy ones.

By the power of the sacred Veda and the creative protection of Vishnu, she was born as a beautiful young woman, wonderful in every feature and delightful to behold.

Her face was lovelier than the women of the great royal heaven. Her charm surpassed the women of the Thirty-Three. Her eyes surpassed those in Yama's heaven; her nose surpassed those in Tusita. Her lips, ears, and cheeks surpassed the women of Nimmana. Her hair surpassed that of the lovely women in the heaven of Niramita. Nowhere in the six heavenly chambers could such beauty be found. Whoever saw her gazed fixedly; in all three worlds and every direction there was no equal.

The ascetics extinguished the consecrated fire and brought the beautiful young woman to their forest hut.

They gave the lovely maiden a name according to her birth: Montho, the beautiful young woman. The holy ones gazed on the goddess's form and saw that her features surpassed every beauty. The four consulted together: "This woman is shaped like a divine drawing. We should offer her to the lord of the world, and so be free from slander and stain." When they agreed together, the four righteous ascetics brought Montho Devi out of the hut and flew away.

When they reached Mount Kailasa, the ascetics explained the whole matter from the beginning to the lord who sustains the three worlds. "We ask to offer this foremost young woman to the crown of the world's lords, to serve beneath your feet until life ends."

Then radiant Phra Isara heard the four sages. He rejoiced and accepted the woman.

Then the ascetics, when they had completed the offering of the lovely woman, took leave and returned to their leaf-hall.

Then Phra Swayambhu, lord of wisdom, turned his face toward Phra Uma and gave a command: "The four holy ones have brought this lovely Montho to us. Show her kindness and raise her as a servant of the goddess."

Then beautiful Phra Uma received her husband's divine command and brought Montho to stay with her.

Then lovely Montho, from the time she lived with Phra Uma, had lasting happiness and peace. She served closely beneath the goddess's feet, never offending the chief queen, beloved of the heart. She waited upon her constantly, as if she were the goddess's own eyes and hands.

Then Phra Uma, beloved and lovely, saw that young Montho was loyal and devoted. The chief consort of the divine king felt affection for the beautiful woman and taught her the Vedas, ascetic disciplines, rites, and ceremonies at all times.

Kala Naga Raises War Against the Demon City

[Slow]

Now the tale will speak of brave Phaya Kala Naga, dwelling below the earth in the great realm of the underworld. He brooded angrily over Sahamaliwan, who had established a royal territory. "This kumbhanda is a band of fools. If left long enough, he will rise in war. I must lift my army and break him in battle. I will not let him grow arrogant and despise the fierce power of the nagas."

Having thought this, he gave a command to the four naga generals: "Prepare the naga warriors. I will march to strike the demon city."

Then the brave naga generals received the command of the lord of the underworld, bowed farewell, and crawled out.

They levied the naga warrior bands, choosing only those brave in great war, and brought them into the ranks of the victory army. Then they ordered them to transform their bodies. Golden armlets clasped like coiled dragons, and green jeweled rings flashed with rainbow light. He wore a divine jeweled crown with garlanded flowers, pendant earrings, and ear ornaments. Taking up a bright jeweled sword, he stood splendid as a lion-king, came down from the divine jeweled dais, and mounted his sacred chariot.

The manifested chariot blazed like the sun's own car. Its wheels were all coral gems; its hubs and axles shone with the nine jewels. The yoke and pole curved gracefully. Banners and streamers rippled and snapped. It was harnessed to heras swift as wind, with tiers of parasols and victory flags above. Gongs and drums sounded in thunder. Soldiers shouted until the earth shook. He urged on the chariot and all his forces, heading straight to the realm of the demon city.
