Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the fiftieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Kumbhakan's final battle, Hanuman's killing of Nonthakansun, Rama's arrow-duel with Kumbhakan, Kumbhakan's recognition of Narai and entrusting of Phiphek, his death and heavenly rebirth, Phiphek's lament, Thotsakan's grief and summons of Intharachit, Montho's warning to her son, Intharachit's war preparations, and Phra Lak's march to meet Intharachit.

Translation

Kumbhakan Falls

Then Phraya Kumbhakan the yaksha stood in his chariot amid the army. The asura glanced aside and saw the army coming out, warriors filling the earth until it shook, and the two wise humans riding together in the great victory-chariot. He examined and looked closely, and knew it was Phra Rama. The asura ground his teeth and ordered the troops to attack.

Then Nonthakansun the yaksha received the asura lord's command and drove the warriors into battle.

The demon troops broke into the monkey troops, thrusting, shooting, cutting, and stabbing with bold display. They brandished weapons like doomsday fire and surged into close battle.

Then the monkey troops, skilled in battle, broke them by fierce power. The monkeys struck back at the demons.

Their mouths bit, feet kicked, and hands slapped; they pursued and turned quickly like a spinning wheel. The asuras broke, dying piled upon one another, while the monkeys pressed forward.

Then Nonthakansun the yaksha saw the monkeys driving back the asuras. His eyes reddened like fire. He ground his teeth and jaws in rage, stamped his foot until the earth seemed to shake, and drove the great troops in to pursue and attack the monkeys.

They hurled weapons like rain. Each side fired guns, arrows, and bow-shafts. They surged into hand-to-hand combat and hacked without giving ground.

Then Hanuman, strong in fierce power, saw the asura demons pressing forward against the monkeys. He came out and stood across their front without retreat, waiting to destroy the yakshas' lives. He brandished the mighty diamond trident and chased the asuras down to kill them.

He stabbed left and swept right in confusion with the noble monkey's terrible strength. The demon troops died and broke senseless; the yakshas fled while the monkeys pursued in a tangled rush.

Then powerful Nonthakan grew furious like the fire at the end of an age. The demon surged in and seized Hanuman.

The yaksha struck and the monkey stabbed without pause. Each endured, each was bold, and the sound shook the earth. Nonthakan did not lessen his attack.

Then brave Hanuman, skilled in battle, parried the club and surged in to seize the asura.

He stabbed with the victorious diamond trident, striking Nonthakan the yaksha in the chest. The demon fell to the earth and his life ended by Hanuman's power.

Then Hanuman seized the corpse and threw it against the front of the yaksha's victory-chariot. He raised his brows, winked, clapped his hands, and pointed at the demon lord: "Hey, hey, Kumbhakan the yaksha! You boast noisily of your courage. Today your head will be shattered and your life will end by Phra Chakri's arrow."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard Hanuman's words and grew angry like fire burning the sky. He stamped his foot and shouted, his voice thunderous as lightning: "Hey, wicked monkey! Do not speak beyond your face. I am of the line of great Brahma, famous in power through the three worlds. Your head will be cut off by a yaksha's hand." Having spoken, he drew an arrow and released it.

The sound thundered through the air, and the earth shook in fear. It darkened the dawn's light and became a burning flame.

Then the lord who surpasses the three worlds saw Kumbhakan the asura shoot a mighty arrow to attack, becoming a hot bright fire that encircled the noble monkey troops. The king fixed his eyes on the asura and shot the Phal Chan arrow.

It cracked like thunder. The worlds shook and rumbled. It became a rainstorm to quench the doomsday fire, then struck the asura troops. Horses, chariots, and elephants were shattered and lost their lives. Heads and feet lay severed everywhere by Phra Chakri's power.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan saw the human shoot an arrow and destroy the asura troops. He frowned, angry and grinding his teeth, and commanded bold-hearted Lothan to drive the divine jeweled chariot forward to attack the monkeys.

Then Phra Rama of the Solar Line saw powerful Kumbhakan coming forward to pursue the monkey host. He commanded Matali, mighty divine charioteer, to drive the bright heavenly chariot forward and meet the asura's chariot.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan saw the human driving a chariot against him and grew angry like the fire at the end of time. He drew a magic arrow to the string, fixed his aim to kill, drew with victorious strength, and released it.

The sound thundered through the sky, and the mountains shook in fear. It became weapons falling upon the forest-monkeys, who died by the asura's power.

Then Phra Rama, Narai of the Solar Line, saw the monkeys killed by the asura's mighty arrow. He drew the Akaniwat arrow to the string, intending to destroy the yaksha's weapon. With bodily strength the king released it in power.

Earth and sky trembled; the sound thundered to the Akanittha heaven. It became fire that destroyed the enemy's weapon. Then the magic arrow struck the demon king's victory-chariot. The chariot's wheels and rims broke and could not endure. The lions and the charioteer died, and the great troops lay dead everywhere.

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed king, bereft of chariot and tenfold army, felt fear in his asura heart. He weakened and did not wish to continue matching power; then pride rose in him again. "I am a noble man by birth, with power surpassing the earth. Even if I die, I will leave my honor shining across heaven. What is there to regret in life? When the destined time has come, life must end." Thinking this, he brandished his royal bow, displayed fierce power and bold strength, and sprang up to fight upon Rama's chariot.

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, caught and warded off the asura's hands, striking left and sweeping right in confusion. Phra Narai also struck with his royal bow, and Kumbhakan could not withstand him; he fell down. The two mighty princes leapt down from the chariot and pressed the attack.

Then Phraya Kumbhakan, standing alone in battle, no longer thought of his life. He brandished his bow-weapon in his hand, aiming fiercely to kill, and leapt to seize Phra Chakri in demon rage.

Each side parried the other in confusion, moving quickly like a spinning wheel. Each was brave and bold, refusing to give way, tangled in hand-to-hand combat.

Then Phra Chakri, whose power is famed in every direction, parried and guarded in battle, then sprang and set his foot upon the demon at once.

He struck with the royal bow against Kumbhakan's body. The sound thundered across the earth, and the asura staggered back and forth.

Then Rama drew the Brahmastra to the string, aiming to destroy the yaksha's life. He released it by his power, and it struck Phraya Kumbhakan in the chest.

Then the younger brother of the ten-headed king was struck by the arrow but did not yet die. The demon fell upon the earth. He looked and saw the lord in his true form: his face bright and radiant, green like a sapphire jewel, his body appearing with four arms, bearing divine weapons, discus, conch, trident, club, bow, and arrow. Then he knew this was powerful Narai, come from the Ocean of Milk. He was startled that he had not understood in time and had contended against the supreme lord. "Had I listened to Phiphek my younger brother, how would my life have perished? It is wasted that I was born of Brahma's line, since I did not consider causes and reason. I am like one born accursed and wretched." Thinking this, he raised his hands above his head and cried out to ask forgiveness: "I have erred this time because of my unrighteous elder brother. Therefore my life now ends by the arrow of splendid Phra Chakri. Garuda-mounted lord, send me to heaven. As for Phiphek the yaksha lord, my beloved younger brother, I leave him beneath your feet. Phra Chakri, please show him mercy."

Then splendid Phra Krishnuharak heard Kumbhakan the asura and answered: "Though you are an enemy, I do not hold hatred or revenge. Asura, do not be anxious or attached on Phiphek your younger brother's account. That companion is truthful, righteous, and grateful; I will nourish and protect him. As for you, who are dying, you will go to the far shore of heaven, to Dusit."

Then Phraya Kumbhakan heard Phra Chakri's command, and it was like divine water poured upon his heart.

He called Phiphek to him, instructing the asura while weeping: "I, your elder brother, am about to perish, but my heart can now rest secure. Since you will serve beneath the lotus feet of the bow-bearing lord, do not be negligent in anything. Follow the mighty lord's will with care. Strive to seek merit and favor, understand front and back, and guard against error. Then people will call you wise, and kin and friends will be able to rely on you, younger brother." As he spoke, the arrow-poison burned his heart and tormented the yaksha. When his voice ended, his life ended, and he was born in Dusit heaven.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha saw his elder brother lose his life. The asura embraced the corpse.

Tears filled his eyes, and he wept in deep grief: "O beloved elder brother, I warned you, but you did not listen. You pushed on through delusion, careless and contemptuous before the conch-bearing lord, until your life ended. This seems like blind, mad delusion. It is wasted that you upheld the ten royal virtues, possessed wisdom and brave skill, and were famous through the whole universe, noble one of Brahma's Solar Line. Because you listened to the false elder brother, the demon neck has been brought to the discus." Lamenting, he sobbed and pressed his face to the body, until the yaksha lord lost consciousness.

Now the tale turns to the gods and heavenly women of every order. They learned that powerful Phra Narai had killed Kumbhakan. Each one rejoiced with delight, clapped hands, and laughed happily. Some leaned from jeweled windows and scattered divine flowers down. Indra blew the conch, and the sound rang through the ten directions. Beautiful apsaras gathered and played music; some sang in joined voices, soft and flowing, giving victory and blessing to Phra Chakri, while all heaven rang with sound.

Then the lord of the three worlds, after killing the asura and as the gods scattered divine flowers, saw them covering the battlefield in profusion, their fragrance spreading sweetly. Pleased and happy, the sky-lord went back and mounted the chariot. He ordered the army withdrawn, all the monkey soldiers together. They shouted until the sixteen worlds shook and returned to the pavilion.

Then Saran, the yaksha envoy, saw Kumbhakan the asura lose his life, and saw that not a single horse, chariot, elephant, or soldier remained. The asura was terrified and ran in confusion into the victorious city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to bold-hearted Raphanasura: "Your brave younger brother raised the demon troops to fight powerful Phra Rama, and he lost his life by the arrow. The warriors, elephants, chariots, and horses are gone as well."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line learned that his beloved younger brother had died on the victorious battlefield. He was shocked as if the king of Death had cut off his head. All ten mouths grieved; he sobbed, wept, and lamented.

"Alas, my younger brother! I never thought you would die. It is wasted that your power blazed like doomsday fire and could subdue heaven itself. How could you be defeated by a little human, tiny as a finger? Brahma's honor has been lost; there is shame before gods and nagas. From this day I will no longer see you. Where will you come back to see your elder brother? The enemy hosts will grow proud and arrogant. Who will help me in battle, bold like you? War presses close against the demon city; with whom shall I plan and consult? None shared happiness, suffering, and life with me as you did." Lamenting in grief, the lord of the earth almost lost consciousness.

When the ten-headed yaksha king's grief had eased somewhat, he thought angrily of the royal enemy: "Ha! Monkeys and humans do not fear me, though I am of Brahma's line. They have insulted me to the utmost this time. I will avenge him in war. Let no one doubt my fierce power." Thinking this, he commanded the attendants: "Go together and bring Intharachit, my beloved son, here to the radiant jeweled palace."

Then the lovely attendants received the asura king's command, offered joined hands, and hurried away.

They reached the prince's palace, bowed their heads with joined hands, and reported: "The lord of the three worlds commands Your Highness to come."

Then Intharachit, skilled in battle, learned that his royal father had summoned him and was pleased. He bathed, dressed in shining splendor, and moved out with graceful steps while the lovely attendants followed.

When he arrived, he bowed his head before his royal father, in the midst of the asura Solar Line, and waited to hear the yaksha king's command.

Then the powerful ten-headed, wheel-bearing lord saw Intharachit, his beloved son, and in his heavy grief recovered somewhat. He stroked his back and gave command: "Life of your father, splendid one, your uncle raised the army to fight, and the enemies killed him. As he spoke he sobbed in grief, and tears flowed in streams. "I have no one else I can see who will go avenge him."

Then the son of the ten-headed king learned that his uncle Kumbhakan had lost his life by the enemy. Love and loss were beyond thought; his heart burned as if seared by fire, and his mind was senseless with grief. "O my royal uncle, whose power had no equal, bearer of divine weapons and terrible glory, how have you been defeated by the enemies and brought shame before gods, guardians, and siddhas?" Lamenting, he thought, and anger choked the asura's heart. "Ha! This war has arisen to harry and kill us. I too am of Brahma's line, with power that can subdue even Indra's heaven. As for a human war like this, I will kill them all and preserve my honor upon the earth." Thinking this, the asura joined his hands and reported to his royal father: "Since the enemy is bold by the power of arrows, I ask to volunteer to go out and fight the royal foe."

Then Raphanasura the yaksha heard his beloved son's words and was pleased that his thought had been fulfilled. He embraced him and commanded: "Jewel of your father, one heart with me, now I will see your power against the arrogant enemy. When you raise the army and go out to fight and break them, the enemy hosts and wicked foes will not withstand the prince's power."

Then Intharachit, fierce as burning fire, received his renowned father's blessing, bowed at his feet, and departed.

When he reached his mother's palace, he raised joined hands and bowed. He reported: "My uncle went out to win the battle and died by the enemy's hand. I, your beloved son, take leave at your lotus feet, mother who bore me, to raise the fourfold army and fight Phra Rama."

Then young and beloved Nang Montho heard her son's words. Her heart was choked tight. She embraced her beloved child, sighed deeply, and spoke: "Heart of your mother, if you are to raise the army in war against bow-bearing Phra Rama, whose power shines like the Sun through heaven and earth, guard yourself well. Thut, Khon, Tri Sian, skilled in battle, your three yaksha uncles, together with great armies, went out to fight, yet Phra Rama alone killed them all by his arrows. Now he has monkey troops as well, from both victorious cities, and each one possesses mighty power; the ten directions cannot wait against them. Since you have received the royal command to raise the warriors and fight Phra Narai of the Solar Line, protect your body well. I do not wish to let you go, but I am helpless because I fear your father."

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line heard his mother speak and answered: "Why is it like this, royal mother? You look lightly upon the yaksha Solar Line, which is lordly and supreme, whose power the three worlds fear. We all bear divine weapons, and our spells and magic are perfected. Whatever we wish to do comes to pass; the ten directions do not withstand us. Why fear two humans with only bows and arrows and a monkey army? How could the demons tremble before their power? Mother, do not be anxious. I will kill them." Having spoken, he paid homage and went to his splendid golden palace.

When he arrived, he commanded the brave officers: "Arrange the great demon army. I will go fight the enemy."

Then Mahothon the yaksha demon received the command, offered joined hands, and hurried out.

He levied horses, chariots, and elephants, choosing only bold, capable, and brave soldiers. Elephant lords rode victory-tusked elephants and held curved pikes upright. Horse lords rode horses carrying lances, wheeling in formation like a spinning wheel. Chariot lords rode chariots in display, holding deep-bending bows in their hands. The troop-lords hurried to arrange their men, each one fierce and skilled in battle, brandishing weapons in a dense and eager mass. The great army was set in formation, spreading on left and right. The bright heavenly chariot was also prepared, waiting for the asura prince.

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line, when the victorious hour drew near, went to bathe in the sea.

Golden sprinklers poured like rain; perfume-water smelled of flower-pollen. He put on trousers with curved hems worked as interlaced dragons, a gold-brocaded cloth with scrollwork and gold divisions, hanging side-panels and vine panels, armor of golden shining scales, an upper garment with direction-plates and jeweled chains, a breastplate shining bright, golden dragon armlets, and graceful diamond rings. He wore the great crown with a flower tucked in and bright jeweled ear-pieces. His hand took up the mighty bow, and he stepped into the divine chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheel-rims were set with pearls, its curved yoke was all coral-jewel, and its four faces were shaped like Indra's Vejayanta palace. Pierced pillars with scrolls and jeweled panels held rows of kneeling gods with kinnara figures between. It was harnessed with two thousand royal lions. Lothan held a spear and shifted it in his hand. He urged and drove them on; they sprang with lion-strength. The royal regalia screened the sunlight; gongs, horns, pipes, and drums answered. The sounds of horses, chariots, elephants, and demon troops roared. Utsayok ordered the golden banner waved, and every division hurried onward.

When they arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set it in the great formation at the place named Garuda, holding firm and waiting for the enemy hosts.

Phra Lak Goes Against Intharachit

[Cha]

Then Phra Rama, Narai-Chakri of the Solar Line, lay on the bright golden couch until the sun was nearly shining. Cuckoos called, sending out their voices; the time-drums echoed; golden bees and flower-bees tasted the dust of blossoms; a soft wind blew, spreading sweet flower-fragrance. He awoke from the divine jeweled bed, bathed, and dressed in splendor.

His royal hand took up the Brahmastra bow, and he looked beautiful as Indra. He moved with graceful steps out to the golden pavilion.

All the mighty warriors and the eighteen crowned chiefs were present. When a sound of shouting and tumult was heard, the sky-lord gave command: "Look, Phiphek the demon. Who has raised warriors today and come out to contend? The sound shakes earth and sky."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard Phra Chakri's royal command, raised joined hands, and answered: "This army is the army of the son of the ten-faced yaksha king, the asura named Intharachit. He is very brave and capable. The lord of the Three Palaces bestowed arrows on him; his power can subdue the three worlds, and the yaksha lord's wisdom and plans are sharper than those of the demon line."

Then the jeweled wheel-bearing lord learned that Thotsakan's son had raised the army and come out. He spoke graciously: "Look, Phiphek the yaksha. Who in the pavilion do you see able to match power with the asura?"

Then Phraya Phiphek heard the royal words, bowed his head, and reported: "As for the monkeys in the pavilion, I do not think they can match his power. Let Phra Lak, lord of the earth, go out and face the demon lord."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard Phiphek the astrologer and spoke: "Look, graceful younger brother Lak, beloved brother who shares my life. Raise the army and go out to fight the son of Thotsakan."

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line heard the Garuda-mounted lord. He bowed his head and answered: "As for winning against Intharachit, I, your younger brother, do not fear his power. I ask to volunteer for the lord of the earth, without clinging to my life."

Then the splendid jeweled wheel-bearing lord heard his younger brother's words and rejoiced as if he had gained heaven. He gave royal command to the mighty son of the Sun: "Arrange the great army for my powerful younger brother."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in battle, received the command of the four-armed lord and hurried out.

He set fierce Hanuman, son of Vayu, over a vanguard of seven samut of troops. The powerful Angkhot held a division of seven samut. Chomphuphan was great commander of the seven-samut flank. The royal center had ten samut of swift, bold, battle-skilled troops. Nilanon was placed as adjutant with seven samut of monkeys. Komut the monkey led the support division, with an equal measure of fighting troops. The rear held seven samut of warriors under Nilakhan the monkey. Left and right wings were complete, with the best and most powerful chosen. Some held javelins and spears, some bows and arrows, lances, swords, knives, and daggers. They prepared the bright jeweled chariot according to Phra Chakri's command.

Then Phra Lak of the splendid Solar Line, when the army had been arranged, went to bathe.

The divine water offered by the lord of the gods was poured with sweetly scented flowers. Perfumes were mixed with divine blossoms. He put on golden jeweled trousers with curved hems, a pair of cloths like Indra's own, worked with swan-vines holding flower-clusters, divine hanging side-panels, ruby-bright panels, direction-plates, breastplate, pendant ornaments, three chains, gold bracelets shaped like Vasuki, gem-set armlets, and rings. He wore a great divine golden crown, beautiful as the lord riding the swan. His royal hand took up the bow, and he came to take leave of the four-armed lord.

When he arrived, he bowed his head before his bow-bearing elder king and waited for the lasting auspicious moment among the monkey warriors.

Then the lord of the three worlds embraced his younger brother and gave blessing: "May you possess mighty, excellent power. May no one in any direction withstand you. Let the enemy hosts and dangers perish by my younger brother's arrow."

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, received Phra Chakri's blessing and placed it joyfully above his head. Afterward he prostrated at the feet of splendid Phra Narai and moved with grace to mount the jeweled chariot.

O jeweled royal chariot: rim, wheel, and ring shone bright; it rose high and graceful in three curves, splendid with gleaming jeweled scrolls. Its summit seemed to drip jewels and diamonds, its beams sparkling like the sun. Four faces shone like a moon-palace; golden tiers and hanging clusters adorned it. The charioteer urged the divine horses, which sprang boldly and fiercely. The full royal regalia rose in grandeur; banners, parasols, and pennants shaded above. The troops cried out over the battle-ground, the sounds of drums and gongs covered the tumult, and dust blew dark across the sky as the royal chariot was driven swiftly on.
