This is the fifty-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Intharachit's first battle with Phra Lak, Intharachit's retreat to empower the Nagabas on Mount Akas Khiri, Thotsakan's summons of Mangkonkan from Romkhan, Mangkonkan's feast and march, Rama's battle with Mangkonkan, Mangkonkan's cloud-illusion and burning-coal rain, and Rama's killing of Mangkonkan with the Brahmastra.

Intharachit and Phra Lak

Then the son of the ten-headed king, skilled in battle, saw the monkeys display fierce power and press in against the army. In anger, the demon ground his teeth, raised and brandished his bow, stamped his foot, and proclaimed: "Hey, common forest-monkeys! You all boast of power and call yourselves brave, coming out together to fight. Are you better than Hanuman or not? I am royal Death itself, with power that shakes the earth. I will take your lives. Do you not know this, wretches?"

Then Phraya Sukhrip, glorious monkey lord, heard the asura's words and grew angry like fire burning the sky. He cried: "Hey, Intharachit! Do not boast of power beyond your face. Even Thotsakan your father could not speak as you speak now. Do you not know that when your father raised Brahma's parasol, I nearly cut off his hair? Because I feared Phra Chakri's command I did not; otherwise his life would have ended. You are a little child, yet your words are coarse and huge. Are you better than your father, cursed wretch?"

Then Intharachit, mighty son of the ten-faced king's Solar Line, heard this and was terribly furious. The yaksha lord ground his teeth, drew a magic arrow to the string, aimed to kill them, and released it with fierce strength. The sound thundered through sky and earth.

It struck Phraya Sukhrip the monkey lord, splendid Angkhot the grandson of Indra, and all the eighteen crowned chiefs. They fell where they stood upon the earth.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, saw Intharachit's arrow strike the monkey ministers. Furious as the fire at the end of an age, the righteous prince raised a bow and arrow, drew with mighty strength, and released it.

The sound thundered through the sky, and the earth shook in fear. It became a soft wind blowing over the great troops, and they returned to clear awareness.

Then the victory-arrow pursued and struck the demon warriors. The yaksha troops fell dead across the field, and it struck Intharachit's chariot as well, crushing it to ash and dust by the power of Phra Chakri's younger brother. The lions and charioteer lost their lives. Then the magic arrow returned.

Then the son of the ten-faced yaksha king fell to the earth. Furious as fire, the asura brandished his royal bow, bold as a lion-king, and sprang up to attack and strike upon Phra Lak's jeweled chariot.

Then the younger brother of the wheel-bearing lord fought hand to hand against the yaksha lord, bravely resisting his power. He struck with the royal bow against Intharachit's body; the yaksha fell from the jeweled chariot, and Phra Lak pursued him.

Then mighty Intharachit parried and warded off the blow. They fled and pursued each other in a tangled rush, striking and blocking, turning and entering and withdrawing as quickly as a spinning wheel. Each was brave and bold, refusing to give way.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line sprang forward with fierce power and seized the asura. He stood firm, set his foot upon the demon's knee, pulled at his head, raised his bow, and struck the son of Lanka's king. The yaksha staggered away under the force.

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line grew angry like fire. The asura took up an arrow and released it.

Its sound was like a thunderbolt. Earth and sky trembled. The arrow burned bright as flame, spreading fire around the monkey army.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, saw Intharachit's arrow coming as fire, its light fierce as doomsday flame. He took the Phlai Wat arrow to the string, intending to destroy the asura, drew firmly with his royal hand, and released it in power.

Earth, sky, and air roared and shook up to Dusit heaven. The arrow became a rainstorm to extinguish the venomous fire, and then struck Intharachit the asura.

Then the son of the ten-headed yaksha king was struck and pinned through his whole body, as if his life would end. He raised his royal hands above his head, honored splendid Brahma, forced his heart steady, composed his senses, and recited a powerful spell.

When he had completed seven recitations, he rubbed his whole yaksha body. By the power of the fierce mantra, the arrows came loose. The sun was setting, descending behind the mountain edge, and the sun's bright light was almost gone. So he said, "Look, Phra Lak. We two have made war together, fighting and striking with equal boldness. Our skill is not far apart. We should withdraw the armies and return. When the sun rises tomorrow, let us come and fight again." Having spoken, he ordered the great army withdrawn into Lanka city.

Then Phra Lak, bright in recovered fortune, saw that Intharachit would not continue fighting and had returned into Lanka. He mounted the bright jeweled chariot and commanded the mighty son of the Sun to withdraw the great army back into the splendid pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed his head before his bow-bearing elder king and reported everything from the fight against Intharachit the asura.

Then splendid Phra Krishnuharak heard the younger brother who shared his life. The king rejoiced deeply, as if he had gained vast treasure throughout the three worlds. He smiled and laughed, embraced Phra Lak, and blessed him: "May you possess excellent mighty power. May no one in the ten directions withstand you." Having spoken, the crest of the three worlds entered the golden pavilion.

Then Intharachit the yaksha, when he reached victorious Lanka, came straight to the radiant royal hall.

He bowed his head at the feet of his yaksha father and reported: "I raised the army and went out to fight the human named Phra Lak, fierce in power, with monkey warriors beyond counting, each one terrible in strength. We fought hard from morning onward. I was struck by the enemy's arrow and nearly lost my life. My chariot and tenfold army were gone. If I had stayed, perhaps I would have lost position. Therefore I have come back to take leave of my father and go empower the noble Nagabas arrow on Mount Akas Khiri, so it will have terrible force. When the full seven days are completed, I will come and destroy the enemy. Let Your Majesty arrange a victory-army to hold them off until I return."

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard his son's report and was pleased. He commanded: "This war is heavy. Its warriors are bold, brave, hardened, and beyond measure in endurance. Break them and destroy them. As for the rite you will perform, complete seven days and nights and hurry back. Behind you I will send an army to hold the field and receive the royal enemies."

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line bowed his head to receive the royal words, offered joined hands, and went out.

When he reached his splendid palace, he commanded the senior demon officers: "Arrange the great army, flowers, incense, candles, and offerings. I will go establish a rite on Mount Akas Khiri. After seven nights I will return and kill the royal enemies."

Then the bold senior officers bowed their heads, received the command, and left the royal hall.

They arranged four companies of battle-skilled soldiers, each bold and fierce: one group with masks, shooting and cutting, black-bodied and thick with strength; one group in white masks, tough-skinned, long-tusked, and strong; one group grimacing with red eyes, hard, cruel, and battle-eager; one group green-faced and patterned, coarse, proud, and arrogant in war. Each group was disciplined, deep in formation, energetic, and brandishing weapons. They prepared the diamond-jeweled chariot along with incense, candles, and flowers, and set the army formation to await the prince's departure.

Then the son of the ten-faced yaksha king, when dawn brightened the night, went to the bathing place.

He bathed in divine Anotatta water, clear and clean, pouring like rain. He refreshed his body and rubbed it with sweet fragrance mixed with flower-pollen. He put on trousers with mirrorwork hems, a green cloth with raised scroll-vines, splendid side-panels and hanging panels, an upper garment and fine-gold chains, direction-plates, breastplate, armlets, gold bracelets coiled like nagas and set with gems, emerald rings with Garuda settings, a jeweled crown and ear-pieces, a golden flower-garland hanging down. His royal hand took the Nagabas bow and arrow; he girded on his powerful diamond sword and moved gracefully into the golden shining chariot.

O royal chariot: wheel-rim and axle shone with diamond jewels, the curved yoke was graceful, and trailing banners hung at the rear. The golden pavilion-pillars and every level of carved crystal glittered. Fierce royal lions were harnessed to it. The charioteer brandished the victory-bow. This chariot had once crossed Mount Yukunthon, moving through the sky to race the shining moon. The royal regalia screened the dawn; tassels, parasols, and fans were splendid. Gongs and drums resounded everywhere, music, horns, and conches answered one another. It moved in army order, with bold troops shouting as it came.

When they reached the foot of Mount Akas, thick with flowers, he halted the great army and commanded the officers: "Surround the place, guard it, and patrol around the bright mountain's foot until seven nights are completed, according to the rite's rule. Watch the bear-troops and do not let them approach. Take turns keeping guard by the fires. Masters and soldiers must not think of sleep." Having given the order, he took up the Nagabas and stood bold as a lion-king. He descended from the splendid jeweled chariot and went to the summit.

He saw the Rothan tree, whose leaves dripped flowing water, rich with sweet fragrance and taste, vast beyond counting. It had hollows and layered openings guarded by deities. On the peak, water-spouts sprayed mist downward. Ghosts and spirits rumbled and groaned; warding spirits cried out. It was cold, making every hair stand, and cicadas sang on and on, lonely in the heart. The asura displayed power, stamped his foot until the place shook, drove away all spirits and ghosts, and entered the hollow of the Rothan tree.

He lit incense and candles in worship of great Brahma, sat in meditation, held the arrow in homage, closed his eyes, and prayed.

Now the tale turns to the strong-venomed naga hosts who lived on Mount Akas. They were struck by Intharachit's spell-knowledge; heat burned their bodies and senses as if fire had been set in their hearts. Unable to endure it, all those who had power rose up.

When they reached the asura king, the nagas spat venom into the victorious Nagabas arrow, fearing the demon's mighty power.

Mangkonkan Comes to Lanka

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line, when golden light shone through the bright sky and the sun rose above the mountain peaks, woke from sleep amid the cries of jeweled roosters and birds and the loud morning music. He entered the bathing place, purified himself, dressed, moved with graceful hands, and came out into the royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat upon the throne with lesser and greater ministers present. He gave command: "Hey, Vaiyavasura the asura. Hurry to Romkhan city and bring my nephew, Mangkonkan the yaksha, who shares my life, to Lanka."

Then Vaiyavasura the yaksha received the asura king's command, paid homage, and hurried away.

When he reached Romkhan city, the thoughtful demon went up to attend the mighty lord in the radiant royal hall.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of Mangkonkan the yaksha, crouching before the asura in the midst of the ministers.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha saw Vaiyavasura enter and asked: "Is my powerful uncle, my father's brother, still secure and happy? What trouble or disaster has occurred that he has sent you here?"

Then Vaiyavasura the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "Enemies have arisen in Lanka. The crown of the demon city has issued a royal command, sending me to invite the mighty lord to go and devise the destruction of the enemy host."

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha heard this and was filled with anger, furious like fire burning the sky. "Look at these humans, small as flies, deluded and noisily boasting courage. They have dared intrude all the way to Lanka, not knowing they will die." Having spoken, he commanded the senior demon officers: "Quickly levy the whole great army. I will go kill the enemies."

Then Wirunchak the yaksha received the command, offered joined hands, and left the royal hall.

He levied demon troops skilled in war, choosing only bold and strong warriors: some wearing armor and pale-yellow tunics, holding bows and venom-arrows; one division in golden-flower tunics with chased armor, holding twisted clubs; one with shining golden armor and green tunics trimmed bright, holding throwing spears; one holding golden standards, in silver armor and patterned tunics; one in red tunics and iron armor, brandishing halberds in pride; one in naga armor and black tunics, carrying lances with nimble motion. They prepared the golden chased chariot and set the army ready to await the asura lord.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha, when dawn brightened the night, went to bathe in the sea.

Divine sprinklers opened streams of water; perfume-water smelled of flower-pollen. He put on trousers with curved hems worked as dragons coiling about the shins, a purple Khmer cloth pierced and raised with swan-scroll medallions, side-panels and hanging panels, scale-armor like serpents set with gems, breastplate and diamond direction-plates, chains shining like fireflies, openwork jeweled bracelets, fine diamond rings, a great crown with flowers tucked in, and bright jeweled ear-pieces. His royal hand took up the mighty bow, and he stepped into the victory-chariot.

O jeweled royal chariot: rim and wheels shone with emeralds, the yoke was handsome, curved and graceful, with descending tiers and floating finials. Fierce dragons were harnessed to it, springing upright like lions, two thousand selected from the finest. The charioteer urged and drove them on. Full royal regalia rose in jeweled splendor; rows of parasols and trailing banners stood out. Pipes answered curved horns; the sky above was darkened. Wheel-rims rang and axles thundered; soldiers stirred and shouted in tumult. Horses and elephants roared, and the troops were driven across the ocean's surface.

When he reached royal Lanka, he halted the lesser and greater warriors, descended from the victory-chariot, and entered the jeweled royal hall.

He lowered himself in homage to the yaksha king, his father's brother, according to his place as nephew, in the midst of the demon ministers.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line saw Phraya Mangkonkan, his beloved nephew, arrive and was glad. He stroked his back and spoke graciously: "Look, splendid nephew. The reason your uncle summoned you is that enemies have come to torment us. Lak and Rama, two brothers, have wandered in the forest and killed your father and uncles, boasting in their terrible power. Now they have seventy-seven samut of monkey troops. They built a road across the sea and came to fight without resting even for a day. Your uncle Kumbhakan went out to win and lost his life. Then Intharachit went out to fight, but could not break them by force. Now he has gone to empower the Nagabas on the summit of Mount Akas. The appointed rite requires seven nights to finish as intended. I will have you go out to hold the army, set firm, and wait until your elder brother returns. Then you can together kill the wicked foes."

Then bold Mangkonkan heard his uncle's command, bowed at the lotus feet, and answered: "As for Lak and Rama, the brothers who have insulted us, anger nearly makes blood flow from my eyes. I have long wished to kill them, but have not yet fulfilled that desire. Since Your Majesty sends me to fight, I rejoice as if I had gained Dusit. Though the wicked enemies have power, I do not fear them. Your nephew asks to volunteer for battle and destroy the humans and monkeys. Crown of the demons, do not be afraid beneath your feet."

Then the yaksha lord of Brahma's royal line heard his beloved nephew and was pleased. He answered: "It is not wasted that you were born of our great Brahma-Solar lineage, skilled in the victorious bow, with power surpassing the earth." Having spoken, he commanded the great yaksha minister to prepare rice and food to feed his nephew's army.

Then Paowanasun the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, took leave, and hurried out.

He ordered the palace staff to notify all cooks, inner and outer, lesser and greater, to prepare offerings for the lord of the earth and feed the demon soldiers as well.

Then the diligent women of the kitchen received the notice, distributed all provisions, and set everyone to their proper work. The inner kitchens prepared savory and sweet dishes, relishes, triumphant wine, and foods all full of flavor. When they finished, lovely asura women raised the dishes and came in ordered rows to present them to the demon king.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line invited Mangkonkan, his beloved nephew, to partake of the victory-feast.

Then the young attendants, tender and graceful, dressed and adorned themselves beautifully, bowed and offered joined hands. Some women poured liquor for the yaksha king; some came in to wave fans according to their appointed service.

The serving women sang in lamenting melodies, answering one another in long, soft, lingering lines. Cymbals and clappers joined the rhythm; drums alternated in sound like music from heaven. Lutes and fiddles sounded together, entertaining the mighty demon.

The dancing women danced, extending arms, moving hands, turning and bending. They stepped close in ordered rows, giving glances and artful expressions. Then they circled after one another, shifted into the face-powdering figure, crossed and exchanged places, moved into the slow younger-sister-sleeping figure, cast both arms softly, changed into the longing-by-the-pillow figure, and artfully twisted through the graceful dance-patterns to entertain the lord of Lanka.

Then all the outer kitchens finished preparing the army meal and brought the dishes out together.

They set them in groups and ranks: jars of liquor, roasted elephant, turned wild ox, sweets and savories in full number, all for feeding the demon troops.

Then Mangkonkan's demon soldiers sat together in a noisy crowd, pouring liquor and acting in confusion. Drunk, they shouted and talked loudly, danced, sang, clapped, teased the serving women, and grabbed in delight.

Then Mangkonkan the yaksha ate while watching the dancing women. Delighted and pleased by their beauty, the yaksha king was happy. When it was done, he paid homage to the righteous lord of the demon city.

Then bold-hearted Raphanasura stroked his back and commanded: "Beloved nephew, heart of your uncle, do not let the humans and monkeys stand against you. Child, may you have prosperity and victory, as your uncle blesses you."

Then brave Mangkonkan received the blessing, paid homage, took leave, and went to his asura seat.

He purified himself by bathing; fragrant perfume spread the scent of flowers. He put on trousers with flying Garuda-vines, a cloth worked with dancing kinnari figures, curling side-panels and hanging panels, dark green emerald armor, a breastplate set with yellow sapphire, ruby direction-plates, pendant jewels and pearls, three battle-chains, golden dragon armlets, fine diamond rings, a great nine-gem crown, and held bow and arrow in his hands. Like mighty Vessavana, he went to mount the victory-chariot.

O jeweled chariot: wheel and rim were all emeralds; the curved yoke was graceful and handsome; coiling vines and figure-panels encircled the floating throne. Its high summit seemed to pierce the sky, with an upper pavilion and hanging scrolls. Golden supports and gem-ornaments shone under the finials. Two thousand fierce dragons were harnessed, like royal lions. The charioteer held a spear and drove like the wind. Royal regalia stood in paired rows; trailing banners waved. Spear-ranks pressed tightly in formation; gongs and drums thundered. Elephants trumpeted; royal horses raged for war. The warriors shouted with deep force, and the army hurried onward.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army at the foot of the great mountain, setting it in victorious formation, firm and waiting for the enemy.

Rama Against Mangkonkan

[Cha]

Then the auspicious incarnate lord entered his sleeping place at night. The king thought through the war-order by which he would destroy the yaksha line and did not sleep deeply. When the last watch passed, the stars and moon withdrew behind the ring of mountains, the sun was about to shine with radiant light, dawn opened in beauty, and the time-music played its blessing.

He rose from the shining divine jeweled couch, bathed, dressed in splendor, and came out before the victorious pavilion.

The warriors skilled in battle, the Solar-line monkeys, lesser and greater, were assembled. When a fierce sound was heard, the lord of the earth gave command: "Look, Phiphek the demon. Who has raised warriors today and come out to fight? The sound shakes the earth."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha considered the hour and moment and understood by his wisdom. He bowed his head and reported to the royal lord, crest of the worlds: "The army that has come out is the asura Mangkonkan. He is the son of Phraya Khon, unmatched and exacting in bow and arrow, living in Romkhan city, and he is Thotsakan's nephew."

Then splendid Phra Krishnuharak heard Phiphek's words and asked: "He is skilled with arrows and has power no one can match. Which warrior should I send out to win against this asura?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "As for the monkey warriors, I see none who can fight against the son of Phraya Khon. Let the four-armed lord go out to fight the demon lord."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard Phiphek the astrologer and commanded the son of the Sun: "Prepare the monkey army, fierce and strong in power. I will go out to fight and destroy Mangkonkan the asura."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, glorious monkey lord, received Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and came out.

He arranged the army in a bird-formation. Nilrat was the bird's beak; Nilek and Nilakhan were the two eyes; the son of Vayu was the bird's head. Mahathawikan was the tongue; Nilanon was the neck. The two wings spread to guard the troops: Wahuroam and Chomphuphan. The left and right feet were Pingkhala and Malun, two warriors. The royal center was the hawk's body; the grandson of Indra was the tail guiding the troops. The diamond file and outer guards were arranged as claws and feathers. Sukhrip and Phiphek together attended the two feet of the four-armed lord.

Then Phra Rama of the Solar Line, bearer of the bow, and his powerful younger brother went to bathe.

The two kings bathed and refreshed their bodies. Divine perfume sent out sweet fragrance. They put on trousers like those worn by Maghavan, with curved golden-jeweled hems, purple cloths with gold vines shaped as seven-headed nagas, jeweled side-panels and pierced vine-panels, upper garments, jeweled direction-plates, emerald-rainbow chains, divine rubies upon the breastplates, bright armlets and gold bracelets, Garuda-set rings, and shining crowns. Their royal hands took up mighty bows, and they went to mount the divine chariot.

O royal chariot of the lord of Tavatimsa heaven: jeweled hubs, wheels, and rims were worked with scrolls and hanging diamond clusters. The rear platform showed gods with joined hands; every level of the throne was graceful; the back panels were all petal-scroll and gem borders, and every frontpiece shone with jewels. Divine horses were harnessed, with force enough to overturn the earth. Matali drove them with sweeping motion, and Narai's younger brother sat in front with joined hands. Sun-screening regalia, peacock parasols, fans, and banners rose in rows. Gongs, victory-drums, and curved horns sounded; the horses cried out in pride of victory. The brave troops shouted until earth, sky, and the universe shook. Dust darkened the air as the great army hurried forward.

When they arrived at the battlefield and Rama saw the yaksha troops, he halted the great army before the asura army.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha sat above his jeweled chariot amid the demon warriors. Seeing the human army come from afar, with troops loud as the whole earth, he aimed to kill them in battle. He ordered the army divided into crow-wings, then commanded Lothan the demon charioteer to drive the shining jeweled chariot through the army and forward.

He cried, "Hey, human! What fierce power do you have? Proud and arrogant, you come to win against the asuras. I live in Romkhan city; I am named Mangkonkan the yaksha. My fierce power is such that the three worlds fear it. Today you will perish by my victorious arrow, and do not doubt that you and the monkey hosts will not return alive."

Then Phra Rama, Narai of the Solar Line and bearer of the bow, heard the nephew of the twenty-handed king. The lord gave royal command: "Hey, Mangkonkan the yaksha lord, do not noisily boast of bold strength. Even your father came to fight me and could not withstand my hand. How much power can you have, that you dare come out to fight? Your head will be cut off before you know it. Do not speak in contempt."

Then Phraya Mangkonkan heard and grew furious, his two eyes bright as dawn. He ground his teeth, stamped his foot until the earth shook in fear, and drove the great troops in to surge forward and attack.

Then the leaders of the yaksha vanguard received the asura king's command and drove the warriors into battle.

They hurled weapons like rain. Each fled and each pursued. Gunshots and shouts thundered everywhere; the great troops did not think of life.

Then the noble monkey warriors stood firm in battle, fighting at close quarters in a tangled press.

They struck left and swept right in confusion with fierce strength, group by group pressing in, and the demons died, broke, and lost sense.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha saw the monkeys killing the asuras, some dead and some fleeing in scattered ranks. His royal hand brandished the bow-weapon, and he shouted until the earth seemed to shake, ordering Lothan to drive the victory-chariot into the middle of the monkey troops.

He broke, pressed, and attacked, and monkeys died crushed by his bow, scattered across the ground by the demon's fierce power.

Then the Garuda-mounted lord of the Solar Line saw Phraya Mangkonkan striking through the army and the monkey troops falling dead up to Akanittha by the yaksha's power. He took the mighty Akaniwat arrow, set it to the string, raised it, and released it.

The sound was like thunder. The worlds shook in fear. It struck the great troops, and they died across the ground.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha saw the human shoot an arrow and kill the warriors by the thousands. He took up the powerful jeweled discus given by splendid Brahma, brandished it like doomsday flame, and hurled it by his power.

It blazed like the sun, striking the noble monkey troops. Heads and feet were severed; they fell senseless upon the earth.

Then the lord who surpasses the three worlds saw the yaksha hurl the discus in attack, striking the monkey warriors, who died piled in countless heaps. The wheel-bearing lord took up the powerful Phlai Wat arrow and released it.

It struck the demon lord's discus and shattered it by Phra Chakri's strength. Then it struck the enemy army; demons died in heaps up to Akanittha. As for the monkeys who had fallen dead, when Phra Phai's wind blew over them they rose up again, leaping, shouting, and mocking the demon lord.

Then bold-hearted Phraya Mangkonkan grew angry like doomsday fire, and the demon lord released an arrow.

It struck Phra Rama of the Solar Line and cut through the jeweled armor he wore. Just as it reached the king's flesh, it turned back and floated in the clouds.

Then Phra Rama, Narai in human form, saw the yaksha's powerful arrow. The sky-lord thought silently: "This Mangkonkan is capable. His arrow cut through my armor and reached inward. He may be counted a victorious warrior, foremost in the yaksha Solar Line. When Phraya Khon fought before, he shot and broke my royal bow. Father and son are truly excellent; no one equals their arrow-power." Thinking this, he raised the bow, and heaven and earth shook. His royal hand drew the Phal Chan arrow to the string, aimed firmly, and released it.

It struck Mangkonkan's demon-arrow, which shattered and could not endure the force. The demon troops lost their lives, together with the asura's victory-chariot.

Then Phraya Mangkonkan the yaksha, bereft of chariot, tenfold army, and Lothan his charioteer, stood alone without companion. His face was strained; fear made his body tremble. With no plan and no strength left to fight, the demon thought: "Ha, this tiny human: his magic arrow is brave. And the monkey warriors I kill do not die. If I return and fight, how could I withstand him?" Thinking this, he flew up into the folds of cloud by his power.

He raised joined hands above his head, honored splendid Brahma, recited spells, composed his senses, and transformed his body.

Forms of mighty demons appeared, all like the yaksha king himself, covering the sky through the demon lord's power. Then he created a rainstorm of burning coals, bright and strong, falling upon the earth, hot like doomsday fire.

Then splendid Phra Krishnuharak saw Mangkonkan the asura no longer fighting and vanished from sight, while burning coals fell over the earth, blazing hot with fierce light. Wonder and doubt rose in his spirit, and he asked: "Look, Phiphek the demon. Where has Mangkonkan gone? Why does this rain fall as burning coal?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard Phra Chakri's words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "Phraya Mangkonkan has fled into the sky, hiding himself in the folds of cloud and reciting expert spells. He has made this rainstorm of burning coals, bright and hot, hoping to kill the monkeys by the spell-power of the mighty demon lord."

Then the auspicious incarnate lord heard Phiphek the asura and looked out. He saw asura forms in the air, all alike and countless. He did not know where to shoot the victory-arrow, which one was Mangkonkan. He set the arrow to the string many times but did not know where to release it, so he asked Phiphek the demon, "How shall I mark which yaksha is the true one?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the lord of the earth and quickly answered with wisdom: "Command the Brahmastra to go straight and kill the yaksha. If Mangkonkan dies, all the illusion-forms will vanish together."

Then Phra Rama of the splendid Solar Line heard Phiphek the demon. The righteous lord commanded the victory-arrow. When he had done so, he set it to the string, raised it in unmatched beauty, drew swiftly with strength, and released it in power.

The sound thundered through the air, and every golden mansion shook. It went straight according to Phra Chakri's command and struck Mangkonkan the asura. His head was cut and flew from his body by splendid Phra Narai's power. He fell down, his life ended, and the illusion-forms vanished.

Then the lesser and greater gods and the heavenly women saw the four-armed victorious lord kill Phraya Mangkonkan with his arrow, ending his life. Each rejoiced steadily, opened the jeweled windows of every mansion, leaned out smiling and laughing, and clapped their hands with bright sound. They scattered splendid divine flowers, sweet and fragrant. The apsaras plucked and bowed musical strings, joining the music, blessing Phra Narai and raising joined hands in homage.
