This is the fifty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan's grief after Mangkonkan's death, Wirunmuk's blocking army, Phiphek's explanation of Intharachit's Nagabas rite, Chomphuwaracha's bear-form destruction of the Rothan tree, Intharachit's early return to battle, Phra Lak's march against him, the exposure and public punishment of Wirunmuk's invisibility attack, Intharachit's cloud-hidden Nagabas strike, and Phiphek's exchange with Intharachit after Phra Lak and the monkey army are bound.

Chomphuwaracha Breaks Intharachit's Rite

Then the jeweled wheel-lord, the creating king, when he had finished killing the demon, admired the divine flower-garlands. He ordered the army withdrawn. The monkeys shouted until everything shook, leaving the victorious battlefield and going to the golden pavilion.

Then Saran, the demon messenger, saw Mangkonkan the asura die by the enemy's hand. He was stunned and lost courage. His body shook until he nearly set his foot wrongly upon the earth. As if Death himself were coming to burn away his life, he feared that power and hurried into the city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to Raphanasura, the yaksha king, that his nephew had gone out to war and now his life had ended.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard the news, and it burned like doomsday fire. The demon was stricken and his heart collapsed. "Alas, beloved nephew. Your arrow-power had no equal. It was wasted, though your strength was radiant and you were born in the Solar Line of Brahma, knowing every effective mantra. Your courage was famous through the ten directions. How could you lose to common humans and the vicious animals? I am ashamed before gods, nagas, gandharvas, and sages throughout the three worlds. And Intharachit, my beloved son and demon lord, has still not returned." He lamented, sighed, and fell into grief. Tears filled his eyes, as if his senses would leave him.

When his grief eased, he commanded Wirunmuk, the radiant one who shared his sorrow: "Raise the great army and set it firmly to receive the enemies. Do not let the humans and monkeys break through and enter. Wait for mighty Intharachit, who will return when he has finished empowering the victory-arrow."

Then the son of Wirunchambang the yaksha bowed to receive his grandfather's command, paid homage, took leave, and went out.

When he arrived, he gave orders to the senior ministers: "Arrange the army, fully supplied with battle-horses. Make it fifteen ten-thousands strong."

Then Mahitan, the energetic general, received the order of Thotsakan's grandson, paid homage, and came out.

He levied the horse-battle formations, choosing only brave Sindhu horses. One division was black as crows, with horse-commanders carrying red-barreled guns. One division was white and clear as conch-shell, proud and strong; its riders carried thrusting lances, brandishing them on the horses' backs. One division had a dark, clouded color, fierce and eager, wheeling, rearing, and biting; its riders carried spears for war, racing until they seemed to vanish. One division was dark and patterned, stepping lightly and splendidly; the riders held golden-tipped weapons in their hands. Masters and men prepared themselves for the asura prince.

Then Wirunmuk the yaksha, when dawn brightened the night, came to the bathing place.

He opened pipes of jeweled red stone, and water sprayed like rain. Fragrance spread and soaked him, sweet scent mixed with golden radiance. He put on bright trousers and a shining gold-patterned cloth, with moving panels and side-panels carved in designs of nagas swimming in the water. His tunic was inscribed with spells and dyed with medicine, so he could conceal himself and disappear at will. A red-diamond breastplate shone like fire; direction-plates glittered with a chain. He put on gold bracelets, armlets, and rings, a crown with pearl-set side-pieces. His royal hand took the Surakan spear, and he sprang up onto his horse.

O battle-horse: it was fierce, eager, bold, and skilled in war, black-faced and white-bodied, graceful and adorned with the nine jewels. It lifted its neck, lowered its hindquarters, shifted and stepped, ran, bounded, leapt, reared, and bit. Driven with skill, swift as wind, its feet matched the Sun's own horses. The brave troops, expert in war, rode on excitedly in noisy commotion. The flankers on both sides made a clamor; dust rose and covered the clouds. The sound of the feet was like surf, rumbling and shaking the forest. The bold demon troops shouted in uproar and drove the horses quickly onward.

When they arrived, he halted the horses and set the army in a great eagle formation. They held firm at the forest edge, resolved to wait for Intharachit's army.

Then Phra Harirak, Phra Chakrakrit, lay upon his shining seat, thinking of his beautiful chief queen. From the first watch of night the king grieved in separation until the moon and stars passed behind Mount Sattaphan and the dawn sun shone. The pleasing calls of jewel-roosters and koels woke the eye; birds flew out and cried aloud. Golden bees and flower-beetles circled and sang, tasting the flowers' nectar. They rubbed themselves in fragrant pollen, buzzing all around. Cicadas sounded like music, while gibbons cried back and forth in grief.

He entered the bathing pool, bathed, dressed himself, and shone like a god drawn by an artist. Then he moved gracefully out before the golden victory-pavilion.

The monkey kings and lords were present in crowds, bowing with joined hands. He asked Phiphek by command: "Why has Intharachit the asura not raised his hundred-thousand demon army and fourfold force to come out and fight for many nights? I am doubtful in my spirit."

Then wise and brave Phiphek heard the royal command. The demon lord bowed his head, joined his hands, considered, and reported to the bow-bearing lord of men: "Intharachit of fierce power has hidden himself to perform a rite. He is taking the venom of the naga kings to empower the demon Nagabas arrow. He is on Mount Akas Khiri, inside the hollow of the Rothan tree. Now the venomous nagas, fearing the asura's bewildering power, come up and spit venom together into the demon's arrow at every hour. If he completes the fixed seven nights, its power will be radiant and bold, able to subdue all three worlds. Only then will he raise the army and come out to fight. Now he has done only three days, and the act has not yet succeeded. Therefore he has sent a blocking army to receive the enemy until the demon lord finishes empowering the arrow."

Then Phra Chakrakrit, whose power is famed in every direction, heard Phiphek the astrologer and said: "Since Intharachit is performing the rite on great Mount Akas Khiri, what plan shall we devise so that it may be destroyed as we desire?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "To destroy the asura's spell, according to the ritual manuals, one must specifically become a bear and bite the tree where the rite is being performed. Whenever the tree breaks and falls there, Intharachit the demon lord will no longer be able to recite the Veda, and his rite will fail. That countermeasure was granted for this very purpose."

Then strong Chomphuwaracha heard Phiphek the demon, bowed his head in homage, and reported: "I ask to volunteer. I will destroy the asura's rite by my swift power, without troubling the soles of your feet."

Then the lord who subdues the three worlds and all directions heard wise Chomphuwaracha and gave a gracious command: "Since you will go destroy the asura's spell where he is empowering the arrow, if he comes out to fight you, may he be defeated by you, powerful monkey."

Then Chomphuwaracha, splendid monkey, bowed to receive Phra Chakri's blessing, made reverence, and came out.

The monkey lord displayed his power. The roar thundered in every direction. He kicked upward, passed through the clouds, and went straight to Mount Akas Khiri.

Floating in the sky, he saw the demon army posted in formations, blocking the forest passages. The monkey lord quietly slipped down.

When he reached the mountain summit, he wound around and hid beside a great thicket. When he was out of sight of the whole army, he composed his mind and recited magical spells.

His body became a bear, huge, black, and mighty. He bounded and leapt through the place and bit the Rothan tree.

It broke down as if struck by a diamond axe. Earth and sky shook and thundered. Darkness gathered like smoke; the sound was like the wind at the end of an age.

Then the brave-hearted naga hosts saw the tree fall and shatter. Startled into confusion and senseless with fear, they thought it was the sound of Garuda's wings. Each feared that terrible power, slithered away, and burrowed through the mountain ground to the naga dwelling-place.

Then Chomphuwaracha, mighty and brave-hearted, displayed power, roared in uproar, and ran past before the demon.

Then mighty Intharachit saw the wild beast destroy the rite and run leaping away. Furious, he stamped his foot until the earth shook in fear, brandished the victory-bow in his hand, and chased after it to kill and destroy.

Then battle-skilled Chomphuwaracha saw the son of the twenty-handed king brandishing his bow and following close. He pretended to flee, turned and lured him, feigning and mocking the yaksha. Then he changed back into a powerful monkey, clapped his hands, pointed at Intharachit's face, and flew away.

When he reached the splendid pavilion, the thoughtful monkey bowed his head and reported to the king what he had done in destroying the rite.

Then glorious Phra Krishnuharak heard Chomphuwaracha and was glad, as if divine water had bathed him. He praised the monkey: "You are brave and powerful. You do not shame your place beneath Phra Isuan's feet. Under heaven, none can equal you." Having spoken, he left the shining, radiant seat and walked gracefully into the beautiful golden pavilion.

Then Intharachit the powerful yaksha understood that the royal enemy had come, destroyed the rite, and escaped. He could not catch him and kill him. The demon grew angry like burning fire. The more he thought, the more resentment tightened his heart, and he returned to his victorious asura army.

He gave royal command to the demon officers: "Go report to my father that I have lost the rite. I will not return into the royal city. I will raise the demon host and go straight to wage war with the enemies at the victorious battlefield." Having spoken, he put on battle dress, displayed power until the earth shook, and, together with the great army, went up into the Surakan chariot.

O battle-chariot: it was strung with pearl-jewels, and its jeweled throne-pavilion blazed like a mansion in the sixteenth heaven. Two thousand royal lions were harnessed to it. Lothan drove it until it reached the wind's own speed, passing through Mount Sattaphan and racing against the Sun's chariot. The royal regalia glittered with jewel-light, flashing through the sky. The demon troops shouted in clamor, as if they would seize and plunder the heavenly city. Gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches sounded together, accompanying an escort of eight hundred thousand. The earth shook through every realm as they raced across the sea.

When he reached the victorious battlefield, he halted the great forces on left and right and set them in a Garuda formation, waiting for the royal enemy.

Then Wirunmuk the yaksha saw Intharachit come and rejoiced. The asura hurried forward.

When he reached him, he bowed his head in homage at the feet of battle-skilled Intharachit and reported: "Your Majesty went to empower the arrow at the mountain summit. Your grandfather sent Uncle Mangkonkan to raise brave troops and hold the army against the monkeys while waiting for Your Majesty's feet. He fought against the human until his life ended. Now there is a royal command for your nephew to come out and hold the field. Your Majesty went to perform the rite, but has returned after three nights with the army, contrary to the appointed time."

Then Intharachit the mighty yaksha heard that the arrogant human had killed Mangkonkan. His anger and resentment were beyond thought, and his heart burned like fire. He said: "My distress this time is too great. I have lost the rite of Brahma, lost the powerful Veda, and more than that, lost my yaksha kinsman, my beloved younger one, radiant in power. These two humans are bold and do not fear the might of yakshas. Good. What does it matter? Today we shall see."

Phra Lak Marches Against Intharachit

Then the incarnate lord sat upon the shining jeweled throne in the golden royal pavilion. The soldiers of seventy-seven samut and the bold eighteen crowned commanders were all crouched in attendance in great numbers, like stars surrounding the moon at night. Phra Hariwong was beautiful in rank and power, like Lord Kosi himself, coming out among the gods' army in a splendid mansion-seat.

He heard a thunderous sound that shook Mount Marakat. It covered the sun's light with dust and color. The lord asked Phiphek: "Is this army that has come out Intharachit the asura's, or is it some other demon coming out to contest victory?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard Phra Chakri's words, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "This army is Intharachit's. He has lost the demon rite, has not returned into Lanka, and has come straight out to fight."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard Phiphek explain the matter and spoke graciously to his younger brother of the Solar Line, the lord powerful with arrows: "Raise the monkey army and go out to fight Intharachit." Having said this, Phra Chakra gave royal command to the son of the Sun, powerful as doomsday fire: "Prepare the great army, the host of brave monkeys, to go with my victorious younger brother and kill the asuras."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the command of supreme Phra Chakri, made reverence, and came out.

He arranged five divisions. In the vanguard, Hanuman was chief, commanding ten samut of monkeys, all chosen for speed in war. Nilanon the monkey held the screening division, commanding ten samut of monkeys. The royal center held the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord as crown of the army. Twenty samut and more were counted there, fierce, harsh, terrible, and bold. The adjutant was Pingkhala, with ten samut of monkeys as well. At the rear, holding the army's end, he set the monkey Nilakhan, commanding ten crowded samut of troops. All stood ready, waiting to proceed.

Then radiant Phra Lak, when the auspicious hour drew near, entered the bathing place.

Divine water, divine streams, and flowers poured over him, sweet with spreading fragrance. His trousers were ornamented with swan-vines and coral-jewels at the raised hems. His gold-bright garment was cut in flame-patterns and carved with royal lion forms. The side-panels and moving panels were splendid. His graceful tunic was jeweled. Direction-plates, breastplate, and gold chains with hanging emerald clusters shone; crystal bracelets and armlets were strung with glittering rubies. He wore a great ring in a jeweled setting, and a diamond crown blazing with radiance. His royal hand took the shining arrow, brandished it gracefully, and he came to mount the splendid chariot.

O mansion-chariot: its rims and spokes were bright with coral-jewels. Emeralds made the graceful yoke and shaft; soft divine rubies made the throne. A crystal pavilion glittered, with side-panels, mirror pillars, and standing flame-patterns. Surrounding jewel images and rows of patterns made the throne-front like Indra's mansion. Four cloud-horses were harnessed to it, all divine youths. Matali, Indra's charioteer, drove the horses as they sprang and leapt. Royal regalia stood in pairs and rows, with side-banners, victory-banners, and pennons. Drums boomed over the earth, curved trumpets and gongs sounded in clamor, the horses neighed with excitement, warriors shouted in tumult, and dust darkened the Sun as they hurried the royal chariot onward.

When they reached the battlefield, he halted the great army and arranged it in the famed Garuda formation, holding steady and watching the asura.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha followed the glorious younger brother, beside the splendid chariot. He saw Intharachit of the Solar Line bearing the Nagabas bow and arrow, like powerful Lord Vessuwan in the middle of the army. He bowed his head and reported to the radiant younger brother of the lord of men: "This time Intharachit the asura bears a divine weapon. It is called the Nagabas bow, and it has mighty power. In all three realms and throughout the worlds, no power equals it. Your Majesty must not be careless as before. Beware of the deluded asura. Be ready to destroy the demon's magic arrow when he releases it to fight."

Then wise and brave Phra Lak heard Phiphek the astrologer and answered: "Even if the yaksha has a divine weapon, whom can he fight? Why should I fear his power, that wicked, base-born fool? If hundreds of kotis came from the whole universe, I would shoot and burn away all their lives with my powerful arrow. How could asuras withstand its strength?"

Then Intharachit, mighty yaksha, saw Phra Lak raise the army and rejoiced. He ordered Lothan the charioteer to move the sky-bright jeweled chariot forward before the troops, then drove the demon soldiers to pursue and attack the monkeys.

Then the battle-skilled demon troops received the order of the twenty-handed king's son. Each displayed power and moved in to fight.

Some shot, some stabbed, some contested in battle, cutting with demon weapons. Their shouts thundered in uproar as the asuras pressed and rushed in.

Then the strong monkey army, each not thinking of his own life, rushed together to fight.

Monkeys kicked demons, struck, received the blows, and then seized them by brave strength, smashing them down upon the earth. The demons died scattered across the ground.

Then the brave demon soldiers, the more they died, the more they reinforced one another and came in to strike the monkey troops.

Some gripped iron pestles and pursued the enemy; some demons took great hammers, some struck with maces. They tangled in close combat, pressing and grappling.

Then the splendid monkey troops blocked and warded off the asuras, then feigned breaking and falling back. When the yakshas followed to strike them, they dodged in deception, punching, slapping, kicking left, and sweeping right. They seized the asuras' weapons and pursued them in disorder, killing them.

Some cut off necks, arms, and feet. The demons died in numbers beyond counting. The whole victorious army buckled, split, and shattered, while the monkeys pursued and attacked more fiercely.

Then the son of the ten-faced yaksha king saw the soldiers die and scatter senselessly. The asura grew angry like doomsday fire. He drew a magic arrow to the string, fixing his mind on killing them, pulled with victorious strength, and released it.

It cracked like thunderbolts. Earth and sky shook in fear. It struck the strong monkey troops, and they died scattered everywhere.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, saw the asura's arrow released and striking the monkey army, killing them in piles up to Akanittha. Phra Chakrakrit's younger brother raised an arrow, set it to the string, aimed to fight and destroy, and released it.

It pursued and destroyed the demon lord's magic arrow, which shattered and could not withstand its force. All the monkey warriors who had died rose alive again. Then it went straight onward by its power, struck Intharachit the yaksha and the whole great army, and the soldiers died everywhere, shattered across the field.

Then mighty Intharachit, brave-hearted, was struck by the arrow as if struck by doomsday fire. The demon lord recited a powerful spell.

When he had completed seven recitations, he rubbed down over his whole yaksha body. All wounds vanished from every limb. Furious, grinding his teeth and stamping his foot, the asura displayed power and fixed his mind on killing. He ordered Wirunmuk, his asura nephew who shared his heart: "Go out and fight. Hold the monkey troops back. I will awaken the victory-arrow's power for a single hour here on the chariot." Having commanded him, he took the Nagabas, powerful as acid fire, composed his mind, raised joined hands in homage, and began to recite magical Veda.

Then mighty Wirunmuk the yaksha received the command of Lanka's son and hurried the volunteer troops to attack.

Then the demon soldiers each mounted and drove their horses, pursuing the monkey army.

The horses' feet thundered, the soldiers shouted until the earth shook, and they wheeled in to block and stab everywhere. The demon troops did not draw back or stop fighting.

Then the battle-skilled monkey soldiers each leapt and seized the horses, surging into close combat.

Yakshas stabbed monkeys; monkeys seized weapons with fierce, strong power. Each side was brave and bold, refusing to yield, and demons died scattered everywhere.

Then the demon soldiers drove horses in continuous reinforcement and struck the monkey troops.

Some stabbed with lances, some with cast spears, wheeling swiftly like royal lions. Each fought hard in battle, not thinking of life.

Then the splendid monkey soldiers dodged quickly in turn and rushed together to strike the demon troops.

Both yakshas and horses fell dead. Masters and men could not withstand the brave strength. The demon army panicked and broke, running senselessly in every direction.

Then mighty Wirunmuk the yaksha saw the army break and die in chaos. Angry as fire burning the sky, the asura ground his teeth, held the spear firmly in his hand, joined his palms over the powerful spear, and recited a concealment spell.

By the force of the potent Veda, his body, his horse, and his shadow all vanished. The asura smiled brightly, flourished the spear, and drove the horse in to attack.

He stabbed left and struck right in confusion, battling in the middle of the splendid monkey army. The monkeys died in heaps, senseless under the asura's power.

Then brave-hearted Nilanon and Hanuman, powerful Chomphuphan, and swift, wise Angkhot saw the monkeys die in heaps, yet they could not see the demon's body. They caught only glimpses, then he vanished again. Every commander was doubtful. They and their warriors ran in circles, confused, trying to catch him. They did not know where to receive the attack, and the monkeys kept breaking down.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, saw the army dying and breaking in chaos. The sky-ruling prince was puzzled and doubtful. He asked loyal-hearted Phiphek: "What has this yaksha done? I hear quick slashing sounds, then he disappears, and the monkeys die senselessly."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head and answered the royal words: "This is because of the demon lord named Wirunmuk. His magic spells are powerful. He conceals his body and vanishes to fight with the powerful Surakan spear. Your Majesty should release an arrow as a net. Let it coil around and bind the yaksha's body, breaking the Veda that conceals him from sight. Then the demon's body will be seen."

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line heard the brother of Thotsakan. He drew the Phal Chan arrow and released it.

The sound was like thunder. It struck the horse, whose head was cut off and could not withstand it. Then it became a powerful diamond net and bound the demon by its strength.

Then mighty Wirunmuk the yaksha was struck by the net, which fastened around his body. The asura rolled upon the earth. He tried to free himself and break out by power, but he could think of nothing and had no strength left. Pain felt as if his life would end, and the demon lord lamented.

Then victorious Hanuman saw the asura's body. The monkey lord leapt toward him by his power.

When he reached him, he broke the net and removed it from the yaksha's body. Then he tied and bound him and brought him to attend the beautiful younger prince.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line saw brave Hanuman bring the demon tied up. He gave royal command: "Hey, wicked, jealous-hearted one. Intharachit the asura raised an army and came out to fight against me. He and I have met in battle. Where has the demon gone now? What is your name, that you dare come fight me with a demon heart?"

Then Wirunmuk the yaksha was so afraid he seemed ready to sink into the earth. The asura answered the command: "I am named Wirunmuk. I came out to fight and kill because powerful Intharachit is awakening the victory-arrow's power. He feared the monkey army would break through and enter, so he had me come out and receive the attack until, at my wits' end, I came to fight. My fault deserves death. Powerful lord, spare my head. This is the exact truth. May Your Majesty show mercy."

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak heard the asura's words. The sky-ruling prince spoke to the monkey kings and soldiers, great and small: "This wretched Wirunmuk does not need to be killed. Take him and parade him before the army. Slash and mark him as fits his boldness. Tattoo his face with the name of a wicked demon, flog him, torment him, and drive him away."

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, great soldiers, received the command of the mighty lord, bowed in homage, and brought the demon away.

They had monkey executioners bind the demon's hands and feet, tattoo and cut him, flog him, and drive him according to the command of Phra Chakri's younger brother.

They ordered the monkey commander Chamong to beat a gong before the yaksha and parade him straight in front of the asura army. When that was finished, the monkeys let him go. All the monkeys shouted until everything shook, leaping, dancing, and rejoicing, mocking and scorning the asuras.

Then Wirunmuk the yaksha felt pain as if his life were ending. His hands brushed tears from his face as he walked away.

When he reached Intharachit, he fell and bowed at the demon lord's feet, weeping. He reported with sighs, tears bathing his face.

Then mighty Intharachit heard and grew furious like doomsday fire; he had not even recited the spell for a full hour. He said: "Look, beloved nephew, powerful and bold. Create an illusion like your uncle, holding the arrow and raising it in the midst of the army. I will fly up into the sky and release the powerful Nagabas, ending the lives of those wicked enemies."

Then brave-hearted Wirunmuk heard his uncle's command and answered: "This matter is not heavy. Your beloved nephew can do it." Having reported, the demon lord recited a radiant victorious spell, composed his mind, and created the form.

It looked like mighty Intharachit, holding the splendid Nagabas arrow upon the jeweled chariot, acting as if it were about to go out to fight.

Then the son of the ten-headed king saw his beloved nephew, who shared his life, make the illusion exactly as he wished. He rejoiced as if he had gained treasure in Dusit. "Now these enemies will not escape with their lives. Do not doubt it." Thinking this, he took the shining arrow, lifted joined hands above his head, closed his eyes, composed his spirit, and recited the asura's concealment spell.

By the force of the victorious mantra, his body and shadow vanished. He brandished the splendid Nagabas arrow and turned his face upward, flying into the clouds.

He floated in the middle of the sky, fixing his mind on killing, staring without blinking, and waiting for the right moment to fight.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line, bearer of the bow, thought that the son of the twenty-handed king intended to fight. He gave royal command to the splendid monkey army: "Hurry in, storm them, and shatter the asura army."

Then the eighteen crowned great commanders drove the great host forward to pursue and kill.

The monkey troops ran in to fight, bold as royal lions. The asuras died in heaps beneath their hands, and the monkeys shouted in uproar.

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha, hidden in the folds of cloud, fixed his two eyes and waited for the moment. Seeing the monkeys press in, the demons fall dead, defeated and fleeing, he grew angry like fire. The asura raised the arrow and released it.

The sound thundered across the earth. The arrow became countless nagas, spewing venom so darkness gathered like smoke. They pursued and bound the glorious younger prince. Only Phiphek, who was kin, was not touched by the yaksha's Nagabas. The monkey army was bound by the nagas and rolled upon the earth.

The asura saw it and rejoiced, smiling and clapping his hands with bright sound. He came out from the dark folds of cloud and flew down to the earth.

He saw Phiphek the demon lord and grew even angrier, like searing fire. Pointing at his face, he cried: "Hey, hey, foolish asura! Ugly one, ungrateful in heart, you do not know the kindness of your kin. You have gone over to Lak and Rama. What do you desire? If my father loses his life, all the demons will weep, while the monkeys shout victory and laugh in contempt at the asuras. As for you, will you weep or laugh? What is in your heart? Say it quickly. I still wonder. Speak the truth."

Then Phiphek of the yaksha Solar Line heard Intharachit the asura and answered: "Hey, hey, look here, little child. Arrogant one, speaking huge and coarse words. Why come intruding to question me? Who is unjust here? As for me and Raphanasura, we cut ourselves off from kinship. We have not been brothers or relatives from that day to this. If they shout, I do not shout with them. If anyone cries in clamor, I do not suffer and I do not rejoice. I stand in the place of dharma."

Then mighty Intharachit heard Phiphek the demon and answered: "Your deeds and your words do not match. You say you stand in dharma and do not take sides. Why then do you expose your own entrails for crows to eat? Whatever deep war-strategy we devised, you explained and revealed it all. Otherwise, how could the enemies intrude and insult the asuras? Because you are corrupt, the wild-monkey army has gained the advantage, and the ascetic rite and Brahma-born spellcraft of our Solar Line in the city have been lost."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard and answered: "I wandered in need, eating only tears every morning and evening. I had no brothers to rely on and no support. So I strayed into the forest, where the monkey army captured me and presented me to the incarnate lord. He graciously made me swear a grave oath before the mighty Brahmastra arrow; knowing this, he had me speak only truth. That is all, Intharachit. I could not conceal it. When Phra Rama asked, I had no choice; otherwise, when would I have spoken? If I had deliberately told things out, hoping to take the demon city, how would Phra Lak the king have been struck by Kumbhakan's asura spear? And as for the Nagabas victory-arrow that you hid yourself away to release, I would have told righteous Narai's younger brother to release a Garuda to destroy it. How could even the powerful nagas withstand brave Garuda? They would flee under the underworld. Such a thing would not be hard."

Then Intharachit, powerful bearer of the discus, heard this and grew furious, his face twisting. The demon lord ground his teeth. "For one moment I remembered you are an uncle. Otherwise I would kill you." He raised the bow, burning with rage, and rushed in pursuit to strike and kill.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha felt fear as if his life would end. The asura fled in panic.

Then mighty Intharachit, when he could not catch the demon lord, mounted the splendid Surakan chariot. The sun was setting, descending at the mountain's edge. The sky grew dark, and the enemy troops could no longer be seen. He said to the powerful asuras: "Glorious Phra Lak, struck by the naga-arrow, will not escape alive. Leave him there for his elder brother to come out, find him, embrace his body, and lament for his beloved younger brother as he lies senseless upon the earth. Then we will kill him too." Having spoken, he ordered the warriors withdrawn. Their shouts shook the earth as they went by the forest road back into the city.
