This is the fifty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Intharachit's report of the Nagabas strike to Thotsakan, Montho's warning that Phra Lak may yet be healed, Rama's grief over Phra Lak, Phiphek's instruction to summon Garuda, Garuda's breaking of the Nagabas and revival of Phra Lak and the monkey army, Intharachit's decision to empower Phra Isuan's Brahmastra, Phiphek's fruit-gathering expedition to Salawan, Thotsakan's dispatch of Kampan as a blocking commander, Phra Lak's march against Kampan, and Hanuman's killing of Kampan.

Translation

The Nagabas Is Broken

Then the ten-faced king, skilled in war, saw mighty Intharachit. He lifted his hand, beckoned him, and asked: "You have not completed the rite. Beloved son, why have you come out to fight? What has happened in the war, heart of mine, that you have come at night?"

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line bowed his head and answered the royal words: "Today your son raised the army and fought against Phra Lak. We answered and resisted each other with great force until sunset. Then your son released the Nagabas, binding mighty Phra Lak and the monkey host." He reported the victorious matter in every detail and with every reason.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard it as if divine nectar had bathed the demon lord's whole body. He embraced his beloved son, and the yaksha king rejoiced in gladness. "You are my eyes and life. You have not wasted your birth in Brahma's line. You deserve to rule a royal city and make your fame and power known hereafter. I will give victorious Lanka as your reward." Speaking so, the yaksha king kissed him and stroked his face. All ten mouths laughed together, thundering in uproar.

Then Intharachit, mighty yaksha, when he had finished reporting to his father, bowed with fingers joined. He prostrated at the royal feet with a glad heart, took leave of his powerful father, and went to the shining palace.

When he arrived, he entered the jeweled chamber, splendid and bright with radiance. He mounted the jeweled throne, with the palace women gathered around.

Then the palace women, lesser and greater, crouched in many rows before him. All were bright and beautiful, graceful, slender, and charming, their faces clear as heavenly women. They came to wave fly-whisks and fans, and to massage him, each performing her palace duty. The singers offered their voices, low and smooth, drawn out in plaintive sweetness, filling the hall with beautiful melody. Drums, clappers, castanets, and cymbals sounded together with plucked and bowed strings, serving the asura at his splendid couch.

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line heard the lovely women and was pleased. The asura, delighted and happy, reclined upon the bed, amusing and teasing the women of the inner palace, and then slept through the night.

Then the ten-headed lord of the yaksha Solar Line, once his beloved son had gained victory over the enemy, rejoiced because it matched his hopes. It was as if he had gained wealth in the mansion of Dusit. The heat in his heart, as if struck by venom-fire, was removed from his breast. His face shone like the moon moving in the sky. He proceeded gracefully into the radiant jeweled palace.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne, stroked his queen's back, and spoke sweetly: "Today Intharachit, our beloved son, destroyed the enemy host with the powerful Nagabas arrow. Angkhot and Hanuman, so bold, and Phra Lak and the army all perished. Only Phra Rama the elder remains. When he comes out and sees his younger brother, he will cry, collapse, and faint upon him, and then we will kill him too. This time Lanka will be free from suffering, with only happiness and ease, vast and magnificent like Phra Suli's Kailasa."

Then lovely Montho, jewel of demon women, heard her royal husband and answered his command: "Crown of the demon city, I ask Your Majesty's pardon. Do not rejoice yet. Sky-lord, think carefully. Mighty Phra Lak was once struck by the Mokhasak, and our beloved brother Phraya Kumbhakan thought his life had ended. He withdrew the army and returned into the royal city, yet Phra Lak revived and did not die, because Phiphek explained the matter to the enemy. This time he has been struck by the Nagabas, Intharachit's arrow-weapon; yet he was left, not killed in battle. It seems the other side will find a remedy."

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard his beautiful chief queen. The demon was tight with resentment, as if a barbed arrow had stabbed his breast. He could not open his mouth to speak. He came down from the shining seat and entered the jeweled chamber.

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha fled Intharachit the asura and came to the splendid pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of the great emperor-lineage lord and reported: "Your victorious younger brother has been bested by Intharachit the demon lord. The monkey kings and troops have also been struck by the Nagabas magic arrow. They have fallen senseless beneath the venom. Mighty lord, please show mercy."

Then Phra Krishnuharak heard the burning news. The sky-ruling lord was startled and alarmed. "What is this, Phiphek? How could you let him deceive us? Your wisdom as an elder is wasted, since you let my younger brother be bested." Speaking so, he took the Brahmastra arrow and left the shining jeweled seat. Sukhrip, Phiphek the asura, and the monkey troops followed him.

They went by the forest road. The moon shone clear in the sky, and the air was full of stars. The sky-lord looked out and saw monkeys struck by the Nagabas, bound and rolling everywhere beyond count. His heart sank further, and the lord went about searching for his younger brother.

When he came near the royal chariot, he saw Phra Lak, his beloved younger brother. Nagas were coiled and wrapped around his body from his feet to his navel. With both hands the king pulled and tore, trying to free the demon Nagabas, but it would not move or loosen from the body. Phra Chakri's heart collapsed in grief.

He lowered himself beside his brother, gently lifted his head into his lap, and tears streamed down over his face. The discus-bearing lord lamented.

"Alas, dear Lak. Why have you come to die? You bear three arrows like doomsday fire, known through every heaven. In war I failed to guard you, and you have been struck by the yaksha's arrow. You are the throne of the nagas, yet you have lost to a common demon-naga. Before, you were struck by the Mokhasak because you were bold and proud, beloved brother. This time too you came out to fight against Intharachit the demon lord. I had warned and charged you; was it right to be careless, to lose advantage to the wicked enemy, as if defeated by asura power? If you have lost your life, how shall I fight the yakshas? Even if I win, what good is it? Where shall I turn my face? If I gain my wife but lose my brother, what use is anything?" Lamenting in terrible grief, he fell silent, senseless.

Then Sukhrip and Phiphek the yaksha saw Phra Harirak Chakri grieving and lying still, unmoving. Each burned with distress, suffering and losing heart. All the monkey soldiers, masters and men, were confused and noisy in uproar. Some came in to massage and press his feet on left and right; some ran to draw water and sprinkle Phra Chakri's body.

Then Phra Hariwong, glorious Narai, recovered his senses and asked Phiphek: "Mighty Phra Lak and the monkey troops, lesser and greater, have been struck by the Nagabas victory-arrow. How can they be revived?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha bowed his head down to the feet and answered Phra Chakri's command: "Mighty Phra Lak, who was struck by Intharachit's arrow, and the monkey army are not dead. Your Majesty should release the Phlai Wat arrow, making earth and sky tremble, and send it to summon Phraya Suban, so he comes down to seize and crush the nagas. The asura Nagabas will flee from the bird-king. Your younger brother and all the monkey lords will revive."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard Phiphek the astrologer and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. All his grief and burning sorrow vanished. He laid his younger brother before the chariot. The glorious king raised the arrow and released it.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of an age. The sky's edge and the underworld shook in fear. It blazed like the rising sun and went straight to the Simphali mansion.

Then Phraya Suban, the bird-king, saw the arrow display power and understood the matter: the supreme incarnate lord had commanded him to come. He left the jeweled mansion and flew by fierce power.

The sound of his wings thundered. It shook down to the ocean floor. Mount Sumeru bent as if it would sink, and all rumbled in uproar.

When he neared the victorious battlefield, he looked and saw the demon nagas gathering and binding the younger prince and the monkey army. He displayed brave power and skilled battle-strength, swooped down to the earth, spread his talons, and pecked at the nagas.

Then the demon Nagabas saw the bird-king. Vasuki and the others were startled and afraid. They released the noble younger prince's body and all the monkey warriors, burrowing down into the earth in fear of the bird's power.

Then Phra Lak, the younger brother, and the monkey army, when the nagas shifted and slipped from their bodies, were touched by dew, and the venom faded and disappeared. Each saw Phra Narai and rose to pay homage. Phra Lak embraced the feet of his elder royal brother and reported: "I had lost my life, and Your righteous Majesty came to save it. Therefore I have returned alive. Your mercy surpasses the sky of Dusit. I ask to volunteer for the powerful lord without fearing the wicked enemy."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard his victorious younger brother. He stroked his back and commanded: "That wretch Intharachit has powerful arrow-knowledge. If even you, lord of power, can come to this, then if another went out to fight, I think he would not withstand the yaksha. In war, there is victory and lost advantage; it does not belong only to you, beloved brother. Bear your power and majesty. Subdue throughout the three worlds. Let the enemy yakshas be defeated by your powerful arrow."

Then Phraya Suban, the bird-king, when the nagas had fled and burrowed into the earth, came in and paid homage. He reported: "I heard the sound of the arrow of the four-armed king, so I came down to help the righteous lord and fight the enemy nagas. Now it is finished. I ask leave to depart from beneath Phra Chakrakrit's feet." Having reported, he raised joined hands, displayed power, and flew to his mansion.

Then the lord of the great emperor lineage invited his victorious younger brother to mount the splendid Surakan chariot. He ordered the great army withdrawn. The battle-skilled monkey warriors shouted until the earth shook and went to the golden pavilion.

Then Saran, the demon messenger, saw Phraya Garuda come and drive the nagas away. Mighty Phra Lak and the monkeys had revived, raised the army, and returned to the victory-pavilion. Startled, he hurried into the city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to Raphanasura the yaksha king: "Phra Lak was struck by the naga-arrow, together with the monkey army. His elder brother Phra Rama found him, grieved, and released an arrow. At once it became Garuda, spreading its talons and pursuing the nagas. The enemies have not lost their lives. The foe is arrogant and proud because they did not die."

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard the news, and it burned like doomsday fire. The demon king sat motionless, stunned. "Damn those enemies. They managed to find a remedy. All this is because of wretched Phiphek; otherwise they would not have escaped alive." Having thought this, the demon lord ordered the young palace women: "Go find powerful Intharachit and tell him that I command him to come up."

Then the beloved palace women received the city-lord's command, paid homage, took leave, and hurried away.

When they reached the prince's palace, they sat down, bowed, and raised joined hands. They reported: "The lord of the three worlds sent me to report at your feet. Now the human and the forest-monkeys have not died. Saran has come in and told the matter, and the sky-lord invites Your Majesty to come."

Then Intharachit, powerful bearer of the bow, heard his father's command. His heart burned like venom-fire. He sat rigid and stunned through his whole body, the asura's spirit blocked and tight. He left the shining jeweled couch, and the intimate palace women followed him.

When he arrived, he paid homage to his royal father, lord of the realm, in the middle of the asura ministers in the splendid great palace.

Then the ten-headed one, created in Brahma's line, saw his beloved son who shared his life. The demon gave royal command: "Phra Lak, who was struck by the Nagabas and rolled on the ground with all the warriors, has now had a wicked Garuda come down to fight, tearing, seizing, crushing, and eating the nagas as bird-prey. Phra Lak and the army have recovered their senses again."

Then Intharachit the mighty yaksha heard the royal command. The asura bowed with joined fingers and reported: "This Nagabas has power, granted as a gift by Brahma. It possesses terrible majesty; the three worlds cannot withstand its strength. This happened because corrupt Phiphek told them the remedy for the splendid arrow. Otherwise, how would the enemies have escaped alive? This resentment is beyond thought. My heart is wounded as if my life would end. I will kill them as I desire, together with the monkey troops. But your son asks leave to go empower the Brahmastra arrow of mighty Phra Isuan, in the space between Mount Yugandhara, beneath the Trang tree by the river on the emerald-jewel sand. According to the Veda of glorious Phra Suli, I will return after three days. Let Your Majesty send someone to hold the field and receive the enemy, but do not bring me death-news that would spoil the rite."

Then Raphanasura the yaksha king heard Intharachit the asura and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. The heat that had smoldered in his heart like bright fire vanished and eased away. He embraced his royal son and said: "You are my eyes and life. Your thought has no equal. As for going to empower the victory-arrow, finish it as you intend. After you go, I will have Kampan raise demon troops to hold the field against the monkey hosts and wait until the rite is complete."

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha bowed his head to receive the blessing with gladness. He raised joined hands, took leave of his supreme father, and then descended from the palace. Bold as a lion-king, he walked gracefully onward, with the palace women following.

When he reached the golden throne, with brave troops on left and right, he gave royal command to the loyal officers: "I will go establish a rite between the great Sattaphan mountains. Arrange all the troops in complete army order. Prepare black goats, black cattle, beans, sesame, incense, candles, and flower-garlands, everything complete according to the Veda's requirement for empowering Phra Suli's arrow."

Then the demon officers bowed their heads, received the command with gladness, and the asuras hurried out.

They arranged six companies of battle-skilled soldiers, fierce, eager, and bold. One company wore crow-egg green shirts and held spears raised to stab. One wore black shirts and brandished lances in circles. One wore red shirts and held sharp swords firmly. One wore pink shirts and held bows ready to loose. One gripped long bows and wore moon-colored shirts edged with gold. One wore blue shirts and held matchlock guns in rows. Each leapt and bounded excitedly, every company awaiting the asura prince.

Then Intharachit the mighty yaksha, when the auspicious hour arrived, came to the pool and bathed.

Jeweled lotuses poured like rain. He wore fragrant scent, rich and sweet. His trousers had coiling naga-vines; his black garment was patterned with offering-grain standards. His side-panels and moving panels had cut designs; his emerald chain hung green and lovely. The breastplate was yellow sapphire, with ruby direction-plates set around it. Pearl-jeweled pendants hung down. His bracelets shone with coral; his armlets were shaped as graceful Vasuki. Diamond rings adorned him; he wore the great nine-jeweled crown with shining ear-pieces. His royal hand took the powerful Brahmastra arrow, and he went to mount the victory-chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were all shining emerald. The yoke-house and graceful shaft were curved and tiered, with standing finials and patterned rows. Proud royal lions were harnessed to it, and the charioteer brandished a club as if it were a spinning wheel. He drove it leaping past the peak of Atsakan, piercing mist into the high wind layer. Peacock parasols and fans waved in the sky. Pennons and banners stood in ordered ranks, darkening and covering the sun. The victory gongs and drums boomed, shaking the Sattaphan mountains. It crossed the lines of Sithandon and flew on in racing motion.

When he reached the Sithandon ocean, he halted the great army and descended to the shining jeweled shore beneath the Trang tree beside the mountain. Then he gave command to Phatthakan the yaksha: "Set up the splendid ritual hall in the middle of the great ocean."

Then battle-skilled Phatthakan received the command of the twenty-handed king's son and hurried away.

He assigned sides and duties among all the demon troops, lesser and greater, and had them set up the shining ritual hall along the riverbank.

Then all the officers hurried the soldiers to cut wood and gather thatch in uproar.

Some shouldered, some carried, some dragged. Lot-tags were drawn for the noisy work. They dug holes and raised pillars at once, each according to his office. There were thirty-three chambers with galleries, ritual fences, and parasols ordered on all four sides. Above, they stretched a canopy and hung splendid flower-garlands. In the middle they set a jeweled throne, with offering vessels and rice-pyramids on left and right. Silver candles and golden candles were arranged. Everything was completed according to the asura's command.

Then Intharachit of the yaksha Solar Line, when the royal ritual hall was finished, rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteen heavens. He removed all radiant ornaments from his body, descended from the royal chariot, and walked to bathe in the river.

He scrubbed away dust and dirt, cleansing the demon body. He anointed himself with fragrance. He wore a splendid green divine cloth, tied a loincloth like an ascetic's garment, and threaded a cord like a hermit. He marked his brow with powder, tied up the hair on his crown, and wore a jeweled rosary. He put on a glittering green shoulder-cloth, took the bright Brahmastra arrow in his hand, and when the auspicious hour was firm, entered the ritual hall.

When he arrived, he sat upon the shining seat bright with pearl-jewels, lit splendid golden incense and candles, and worshiped the lord of the three worlds. He ordered the dark drums beaten according to the occult manuals. He laid the Brahmastra across his lap, composed his mind, and recited the powerful Veda.

The Army Hunger and Kampan's Battle

Then glorious Phra Harirak, when dawn brightened the earth, rose from his bed. He washed, bathed, and dressed in shining splendor like a god drawn in a picture. Moving gracefully, he came out before the victory-pavilion.

The soldiers of both cities were present, bowing their heads and raising joined hands. They crouched in rows like stars surrounding the moon in the sky. He consulted on the royal business of war with the battle-skilled eighteen crowned commanders, planning how to advance and fight the royal enemy.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, bowed his head and reported to Phra Chakri: "Now the monkeys in the pavilion are starving and short of fruit. We do not know where to go search for it. We have waited for Nilaphat, but he has not appeared, beyond the appointed time by more than fifteen days. All edible trees on this island, in the forests and groves, with leaves, roots, flowers, fruit, and every kind of food, are not enough for all to share. The strong monkeys are hungry, weakened, and losing their strength. It seems difficult for them to fight the enemy. Bow-bearing lord, please show mercy."

Then the jeweled wheel-lord heard the son of the Sun. The sky-ruling lord was startled and sat motionless, thinking, his heart burning like fire. He commanded: "What can be done, Phiphek the demon lord? Now the soldiers and army lack tree-fruit for food. If the battle continues, this will damage the campaign, and my distress increases many times. What forest has fruit near the land of beautiful Lanka, enough to strengthen the army until the monkey Nilaphat returns?"

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal command and reported: "Across the shore of the great ocean, to the north, there is a wide forest called Salawan. Its trees bear many kinds of fruit, thick with raw, half-ripe, poor, and ripe fruit, delightful as a garden in heaven. To feed the army there, I think it will be enough without serious difficulty."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bearer of the discus, heard the brother of Thotsakan. Phra Harirak rejoiced and said graciously: "Look, Phiphek the yaksha. Since you know the road, lead two samut of troops to gather tree-fruit and food, sour, sweet, and whatever can be eaten, enough for the great army. Do not be careless. Return at once."

Then Phraya Phiphek the yaksha heard Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and answered: "Your servant will take leave and go gather fruit in the forest, enough to feed the monkey army. I think I will not be able to return today. Later, I fear that Intharachit, proud in power, may raise troops and come out to attack. Be cautious. Do not let the enemy gain advantage." Having reported, he bowed at the feet of glorious Phra Narai, left Phra Chakri's presence, and went to arrange the monkey troops.

When he had the full two samut of monkeys, with baskets, shoulder-poles, and carrying frames ready, the wise asura led them across the great ocean.

They traveled through fields, mountain hollows, uplands, and great forest-ridges. The monkey troops leapt and ran, teasing and playing with each other.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line, when sunset came, entered his sleeping place. He pondered how to destroy the enemies and end their lives. He did not sleep deeply until the sun nearly brightened in gold. The court musicians sounded conches and trumpets, with shouting and thunderous clamor. Horses and elephants made their own excited sounds, and koels called in ringing cries.

He entered to wash and bathe, clear divine water bathing his body. He put on radiant jeweled dress and went to the shining audience hall.

He lowered himself upon the jeweled throne, splendid and bright with radiance. Ministers, warriors, poets, astrologers, and aged teachers crouched in attendance in many rows. The asura gave royal command: "Look, Kampan, demon lord, powerful one. Raise a great army of ten samut of asuras, fully supplied with weapons, and hold the field against the humans and monkeys until victorious Intharachit completes the arrow-empowering rite. Only then will we attack and fight the royal enemy." Having spoken, he ordered Paowanasura the yaksha: "Arrange good soldiers to go with the demon lord."

Then brave-hearted Paowanasura bowed his head to receive the royal command, raised joined hands, took leave, and crawled out.

He arranged ten samut of battle-skilled soldiers, all chosen for courage. One group had curved tusks reaching their eyes and held raised spears, grinding their teeth. One wore masks and red bodies, brandishing great hammers. One group had common faces and fierce hearts, holding guns ready and looking about. One had white tusks and black teeth, carrying hook-blades and moving with skill. They also harnessed excited elephants, every group waiting for the asura.

Then mighty Kampan the yaksha received the command of the powerful king, raised joined hands, and came out.

He cleansed his body of impurity. The asura dressed grandly: trousers with naga forms, a golden cloth rich with vine-patterns, a purple waist-cloth tied tightly, a gold-threaded shirt shining brightly, splendid armor, enduring against weapons, and a bright gold chain. In his right hand he held a mace, and he came to mount the elephant.

O war-elephant: streaming with rut, fierce, eager, and brave, its two eyes were like doomsday fire. It stood towering, born of the Chaddanta line. Its feet and tusks were strong in battle, and it was harnessed with full firm equipment. Its ears twitched, ready for combat, to charge, pierce, and thrust. The soldiers were all capable, powerful, bold, and strong. They shouted and broke through battle in the open field, racing to drive onward quickly.

When he reached the battlefield, he halted the lesser and greater troops, set the army firmly, and waited to contest victory with the monkeys.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bearer of the bow, lay upon the splendid seat, but the lord did not sleep deeply. He considered the war and how to destroy the yaksha lineage until golden light brightened the clouds and the moon slipped behind the mountain edge. All the birds woke, some calling, some singing, some flying, seeking food and crying through the forest.

He washed, bathed, and dressed. His shining face was bright as the moon. His hand took the Brahmastra victory-arrow, and he went out to the army.

With him were Sukhrip, Hanuman, Chomphuphan, Angkhot the splendid monkey, and the soldiers of both royal cities, bowing with joined hands in many rows. Just then he heard shouts, loud and shaking through the forest. He commanded his glorious younger brother, the jewel of his eyes and life: "Raise the army and go fight the deluded asuras. Do not let them gain advantage through trickery. Manage the battle carefully." Then he gave command to the glorious son of the Sun: "Arrange a great army, choosing only battle-skilled monkeys, and send it with my glorious younger brother, full fifty samut, equipped with every weapon. Let the son of Vayu go as the vanguard."

Then wise Sukhrip received the lord of the three worlds' command, paid homage, and hurried out.

He levied bold Hanuman to command the vanguard. Kesarathamala held a division; the bodyguard was the son of Pali. The royal army was made of capable soldiers, bold as lion-kings. The adjutant was Satphali; the support division was Surakan the monkey. Nilanon held the rear guard. Masters and soldiers were all mighty. The army of the incarnate lord's younger brother was chosen for skill in war. Each soldier was proud and eager for battle, all fifty samut bold and excited, with every weapon ready, waiting in tumult for the king to proceed.

He washed and bathed, refreshing his body. Golden sprinklers poured like rain. He rubbed himself with divine fragrance mixed with flower-pollen. His trousers had raised hems and mirrorwork; his garment was brocade, woven with gold. The moving panels and side-panels were splendid; his tunic bore winding flame-vines. Jeweled necklaces and rainbow diamonds shone; direction-plates and breastplate glittered with cut gems. Jeweled pendants and divine chains hung down; naga-wound armlets and bracelets of gold adorned him. Rings filled every finger of his royal hands. His jeweled crown shone brightly, with heavenly garlands and beautiful ear-flowers. His royal hand took the bow-weapon. Like a god descending from heaven, he moved gracefully and came to mount the radiant chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims shone with emerald. The curved yoke arched gracefully, with side-banners; the throne's patterns glittered with garnets. Divine youths in horse-form were harnessed to it; the charioteer held a shield and moved his hands gracefully. Royal regalia screened the sunlight, and ordered escorts with trumpets and conches sounded in clamor. Gongs and drums boomed; soldiers shouted in tumult. Chaiyampawan led the army, waving the victory-banner above. The sound of chariot and host shook earth, sky, and the universe. Dust darkened the rising sun as the great troops hurried onward.

When he arrived and saw the army posted at the forest edge, he halted the great troops and divided them into crow-wings for battle.

Then mighty Kampan the yaksha stood on his elephant in the middle of the army and saw the monkey army come. Furious like doomsday fire, his body shook as he fixed his mind on killing. He ordered the asura troops to rush in together and strike the monkeys.

Then the battle-skilled demon troops each displayed power and went in to fight the forest-monkeys.

Feet kicked, mouths bit, hands slapped; they dodged in the midst of the demon army. They embraced, seized, and struggled in chaos, alternately fleeing and pursuing in disorder.

Then the lesser and greater demon troops, not thinking of life or heart, pursued and reinforced one another continuously.

They struck with iron hammers, maces, and hurled javelins to block the front. Yakshas stabbed, monkeys parried weapons; each side was brave and bold in combat.

Then the brave-hearted monkey host resisted and fought, surging forward to pursue the attack.

Some monkeys seized weapons and cut and stabbed in battle against the yakshas. Heads were cut off, and the asuras died everywhere, senseless. The demon army shattered and fell over itself.

Then mighty Kampan saw the demon troops lose their lives. The demon grew angry like doomsday fire, ground his teeth, displayed power, and shouted from the elephant's neck. He drove the royal elephant forward to pursue and strike the monkey troops.

Monkeys died in heaps by the tens of thousands and could not stand in battle. They fled, broke, and scattered, no longer keeping any formation.

Then Vayu's son, brave and mighty-hearted, saw the demon driving the rutting elephant in to pursue the soldiers. Furious, he drew his trident and brandished it, displaying power like a lion-king. He came out and stood before the elephant, and the monkey cried: "Hey, hey, look here, asura. What are you, that you come out so arrogant to fight? What is your name, demon lord?"

Then mighty Kampan saw the monkey acting arrogantly and asking him with foolish words. He cried: "Hey, little monkey, tiny as a finger of the hand. As for me, powerful one, I am named Kampan the asura. I am the foremost battle-skilled soldier of the ten-faced yaksha king. My power surpasses the earth, and no one can oppose my strength. As for you, monkey, what is your name and lineage? Why stand before me? Do you not fear losing your life?"

Then Vayu's son, fierce and strong, heard the demon and clapped his hands in mockery, answering: "I am named Hanuman, soldier of Phra Narai the lord. Do not boast of arrogance. I will kill you and end your life." Having spoken, he displayed power until the ten directions shook in fear. He leapt, rushed, and pressed in, pursuing and attacking.

He brandished the sharp diamond trident and stabbed the royal elephant. It fell down upon the earth, and the mahout lost his life as well.

Then mighty Kampan had lost advantage and lost his rutting elephant. The demon grew furious like fire, sprang up, and brandished his mace. He displayed power until the earth shook, bounded and leapt swiftly, and pursued Hanuman to win the fight.

Each struck, each cut, each parried, turning back and forth with brave strength. Each retreated and pursued in battle, fighting without thought of life.

Then Vayu's son, mighty in victory, met the demon hand to hand and struck back. The monkey lord surged and seized the demon.

He sprang up, stepped on the demon's knee, and pulled at his head, turning swiftly as a spinning wheel. Raising the diamond trident to strike, he tangled with him, blocking and warding back and forth.

Then brave-hearted Kampan ground his teeth until the sound shook the sky. The asura bounded in to win the battle.

He kicked bold Hanuman, surged forward, seized his body, and smashed him down with powerful strength, intending to end his life.

Then victorious Hanuman was not hurt or bruised in any limb. The monkey lord sprang up and stood firm. His eyes were red as the sun's light. Furious, his body shaking, he set his mind on ending Kampan's life, ground his teeth, and pursued the fight.

He kicked General Kampan, who fell and could not withstand his brave strength. Hanuman struck him with the divine diamond trident, and the demon lord's life ended.

Then the demon scouts saw Kampan the asura fight and lose his life. Fear seemed to make them burrow into the earth; their faces rolled and their bodies shook. The two asura demons hurried together into Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads and reported to Raphanasura the yaksha king: "Now Kampan the asura and the army that went out with him have been killed by the enemy. The troops have died in heaps beyond counting. The enemy is proud and arrogant." They reported every detail.
