This is the fifty-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan's dispatch of Vaiyakasura with the news of Kampan's death, Intharachit's completion of the Brahmastra rite, his Indra-and-Erawan deception, the Brahmastra strike against Phra Lak and the monkey army, Hanuman's defeat, Rama's night search and laments, Saran's report to Thotsakan, Thotsakan's sending of the flying pavilion for Sida, and Sida and Trichada's visit to the battlefield.

The Brahmastra Deception

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line, brave of heart, heard that Kampan, the demon commander, had lost his life by the enemy's hand. His grief and regret were beyond thought. His heart burned as if seared by fire. The asura sat rigid and stunned, unable to speak. Forgetting Intharachit's command, he gave royal order: "Ho, Vaiyakasura. Hurry to the Sattaphan heights and tell my son that Kampan has died. Let him quickly come to fight and take revenge."

Then bold Vaiyakasura received the demon king's command, bowed, took leave, and flew through the air.

When he reached the bank of Sithandon beside great Mount Yugandhara, he descended at speed from the sky and entered the royal ritual hall.

He raised joined hands at the lotus feet of Intharachit the yaksha and reported: "Kampan raised the army to battle, and the enemies killed him utterly. Now your royal father has sent an absolute command, inviting the mighty lord to hurry and think how to avenge him."

Then Intharachit, lord of the yaksha Solar Line, was concentrating his heart within the rite. When the demon heard the death-news, he was enraged as if by venom-fire, wounded in spirit as if his life would end. He rose, stamped his foot, and cried: "Ho, Vaiyakasura. If this had not been my father's order, your head would fall here and now, to satisfy me for ruining my rite." Then he commanded the demon ministers, lesser and greater: "I will answer this vile ill-omen. Let my victory-arrow gain power. Bring black goats and black cattle. Offer them with Vedic spells, and bring their blood into the middle of the ritual ground."

Then the demon captains bowed their heads to receive the demon lord's command and ran about in confusion.

They led in goats and cattle in an uproar, dragging them noisily forward, and tied them before the asura according to the royal command.

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, saw the demons bring in the animals and was greatly pleased. He returned to the seat of the altar. His hand held the powerful Brahmastra arrow. He raised joined hands before his face, and the yaksha lord recited the sacred spell.

When the thousandth repetition was complete, the earth shook and thundered. He seized the bound animals and slaughtered them all.

When that was done, he brought in a golden tray to receive the blood. By its power, the Brahmastra drank it in and was perfected as he desired. He anointed it with fragrant sandal and aloeswood, and the demon laughed in delight. "Now the arrogant enemies should die. Even if they are greater than humans and monkeys, they will not withstand the radiance of my arrow." He ordered Rutthakan, his trusted officer: "We will go to win the battle by stratagem. I will transform myself into Kosi, lord Indra. All the mighty troops will become gandharvas, vidyadharas, gods, asuras, guardians, and perfected beings. Karunarat, my fellow planner, shall become Erawan. Another group shall become dancers, like heavenly apsaras, playing, singing, and dancing together before the royal elephant."

Then Rutthakan, the brave minister, bowed his head to receive the royal command, and the demon commander arranged the army.

He made the demon Karunarat become bold Erawan, splendid with thirty-three heads. Each head had seven lovely curving tusks. On each tusk were seven lotus pools. In each pool were lotus blossoms with pollen. Seven stalks rose in each clump, and on each stalk seven flowers opened. Each flower had seven petals, spreading fragrance through the air. On each petal stood seven youthful goddesses. Each was graceful, beautiful, and sweet-voiced in dance and song. Each goddess had seven attendants, lovely and bright. All were pale and radiant, like the elephant of the lord of Tavatimsa heaven. Every elephant-head bore a palace, and all shone with gems.

The charioteers and elephant-drivers became gods at the rear of the splendid elephant. The musicians transformed their bodies into heavenly women for dancing before the powerful elephant. The asura soldiers transformed into gods, asuras, and beings of power. Some became gandharvas, crowding the ranks thickly to the very edge of the sky. The vanguard was made into vidyadharas. All held every kind of weapon, guns, darts, and bows, waiting for the son of the twenty-armed king to go and fight the enemy.

Then Intharachit, mighty yaksha, when the auspicious time for victory had come, transformed his body.

He looked like the thousand-eyed lord himself descending from Tavatimsa. He moved with stately grace and came to bathe in the water.

They opened jeweled spouts and golden lotuses, sending fragrant mist through the air. His lower garment glittered with garnet and jewels, edged with curling naga designs. He wore Kosi cloth with mirrored panels, set with royal lion forms. His side-cloths carried swan-vine patterns, and his floating robe shone on his body. Directional plaques, breast ornaments, and chains covered him; jeweled girdles and hanging tassels flashed with gems. He wore golden necklaces, armlets shaped as nagas, bracelets of makara design set with jewels, and rings with Garuda settings. He bore a high crown, ear ornaments, garlands, and flowers. His hand held the bright Brahmastra arrow. Like Amarin himself, he moved his hand and mounted the elephant.

O royal elephant, like the chief elephant of Kosi, high and towering as a mountain, wholly white and beautiful as silver. Its tail arched, its ears spread, its tassels hung, and its trunk and tusks were fit for battle. It wore complete war-gear, glittering like stars. It flew through the sky, with troops escorting it on left and right. Umbrellas, victory flags, and yak-tail fans streamed around it. Hosts of gods followed in ordered rows. Across the ranges of Sithandon, he drove the elephant through the clouds.

When he reached the battlefield, he saw Phra Lak, the younger prince, standing ready in the middle of the army. The asura rejoiced that his plan matched his thought. He halted the mighty troops, spread thickly through the limitless sky, and gave command to the soldiers: all who had transformed into gods and lovely apsaras were to play music, sing, dance, and perform.

Then the troops and companies who had transformed into apsaras and gods all obeyed his word.

[Saming Thong]

Some beat the ramana and answered with hand-drums, playing in a smooth, lingering pace. They plucked, bowed, struck, and blew instruments, singing sweet drawn-out melodies.

[Phra Thong]

Some joined the dance, gliding and swaying, moving in heavenly song. They bent their wrists, turned, shifted, and circled. They passed through one another like turning wheels, raised gestures, and shaped their arms like swans. They seized and drew one another in lively motion. Beautiful as gods and apsaras, they glanced, guarded, and flashed their eyes, casting charms to bewilder those who watched, all within the demon's stratagem.

Then radiant Phra Lak sat upon the jeweled chariot. The prince glanced aside and saw lord Makhawan riding a great royal elephant, with gods and heavenly beings floating in the middle of the clouds. There were groups of divine apsaras, moving their hands and dancing. He gave royal command: "Look, bold Hanuman. Why does lord Amarin ride his mighty divine elephant and float there in the sky, surrounded by the host of gods?"

Then the wind-god's son, strong in power and courage, heard the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord. He bowed and answered: "Kosi and the sons of heaven hold weapons without exception, and there are dancers from the inner ranks with them. I have never seen this before. Perhaps it is a demon trick, a crafty stratagem of yaksha magic. It is strange and doubtful to the spirit. Sky-lord, be careful."

Then Phra Lak of the glorious Solar Line heard the wind-god's son's words, and the prince stared back and forth. He saw the gods and apsaras dancing in the air. The sight delighted and bewildered his eyes, and the younger prince's senses drifted away. The monkey kings and all the forest-monkey troops, lesser and greater, also watched and became careless. None guarded against the asura.

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha saw that Phra Lak and the army had all lost their awareness. He lifted the Brahmastra to the bowstring, aimed at glorious Phra Lak, drew it back above Erawan's neck, and released it.

It became a storm of arrows, showing such power that the earth seemed to quake. It struck the younger brother of the lord of the three worlds, together with the great army: the eighteen crowned monkey commanders, radiant Sukhrip, and Angkhot, son of Phraya Phali, all fell to the ground.

Then the demon warriors shot and hurled their weapons in showers from the sky.

The monkey troops were struck by spears, swords, guns, darts, and arrows. They died scattered across the ground. Only Hanuman the monkey remained.

Then fierce Intharachit saw the humans and monkeys lose their lives. He clapped his hands in ringing delight. All his soldiers rejoiced and shouted in uproar. Some played music, while the asura laughed again and again.

Then the son of the wind, brave and powerful, saw Phra In shoot the arrow that struck the mighty younger prince. The whole host of heavenly sons hurled weapons down like rain, striking the monkey army until they lay dead everywhere. He stamped his foot in rage, making the earth seem to shake, and cried: "Ho, thousand-eyed one. Why have you joined the demons? With all the hosts of heaven, you have killed the younger brother of Phra Narai. You have not stood in truth and dharma. I will take your life." Speaking so, he drew out his trident, whirled it, and displayed his power. He kicked off and sprang into the clouds, climbing with his feet upon the elephant's tusks.

With his left hand he broke Erawan's neck; with his right he seized the bow. He dragged and pulled with battle-strength, pressing the fight at close quarters.

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha defended himself and fought back. The asura struck him with the victory-arrow. It hit bold Hanuman's body. Unable to bear the force and pain, he flew from the elephant's neck and fell senseless upon the earth.

The demon lord rejoiced in triumph, clapping his hands and laughing with delight. That form changed back into an asura and descended from the sky.

Just as the sun set and slipped behind the mountain edge, he commanded a powerful soldier: "Listen, Saran the asura. If you see Phra Rama, the elder brother, come to grieve in sorrow, embrace his brother, and faint beside him, then hurry to report it."

Having spoken, he withdrew the army. The hundred thousand demon soldiers roared until sky and earth thundered, and the demon lord returned into Lanka.

When he reached the royal residence of his demon father, he moved gracefully up into the radiant jeweled hall.

He bowed his head at the feet of his splendid royal father, in the middle of the asura ministers, monkeys' astrologers, and attendants gathered there.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line saw his beloved son, the life he shared, and commanded: "You went out to battle with the human. How was it? Did you lose advantage or win? Why have you come at night?"

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, bowed his head and answered the royal words: "This time your son planned a stratagem. I transformed into the thousand-eyed one, riding the elephant in the sky. All the army transformed itself into gods. Some became dancers, singing smoothly in the air. Phra Lak and the monkey army were bewildered by the illusion. Seeing the enemy careless and exposed, I shot the Brahmastra arrow. It struck mighty Phra Lak and the monkey host, and they all lost their lives."

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard his son's report. The demon king rejoiced because the matter matched his desire. He clapped his hands and laughed, the sound thundering up to Dusit. He embraced Intharachit and said: "Heart of your father, you have not failed Brahma's line. Your wisdom, power, and courage are fitting for the crest of the asuras, heir to the Solar Line in the demon city. You have grown weary in war. Beloved son, go bathe, eat, rest at ease, and enjoy the beautiful women."

Then Intharachit, lord of the yaksha Solar Line, bowed his head in homage and went to the golden splendid palace.

He lowered himself upon the jeweled couch, radiant and bright, and spoke sweetly to lovely Suwannakanyuma: "Today I shot the Brahmastra, strong in power and courage. It struck Phra Lak and the army, and by its might their lives are ended."

Then beautiful Suwannakanyuma heard her royal husband, and it was like divine water mixed into her heart. She answered: "Even the three-eyed lord could not contend with Your Majesty's power. How could humans and forest-monkeys fail to perish by it?" Having spoken, she called the charming attendants: "Serve your lord's mighty son, so the sky-ruling lord may be happy and pleased."

Then the lovely palace women bowed their heads to receive the command with gladness, and every woman took her ordered place.

[Saming Thong]

Some plucked strings, bowed instruments, beat drums, clappers, and cymbals in heavenly song. They sang plaintively, voices rising and falling together until the whole inner palace resounded. Then they shifted to sweet verses, slow and pleasing, harmonious and catching the heart, filling the palace like an emperor's mansion.

[Phra Thong]

The dancing women danced, extending wrists, moving gracefully, like Mekhala tossing her jeweled orb, beautiful as hosts of gods. Then they circled and changed formation into a pleasing pillow-song. They stepped and raised their hands with lovely bearing, glancing and casting side-eyes according to the dance, tempting with charm, like apsaras from heaven descended to serve the demon.

Then Intharachit of the Solar Line watched the dancing women, beautiful as heavenly goddesses. He listened to the singers' smooth, lovely voices, and their sweetness caught the yaksha's heart. Desire and delight arose in him. He took pleasure and was pleased, as if enjoying treasure throughout all six heavens beyond comparison. He reclined on the shining couch and slept in the first watch of the night.

Then Phra Harirak, the lord, went to the golden pavilion and waited for his mighty younger brother. When the sun had set and slipped behind the mountain edge, his heart burned like fire. The king thought in wonder: "Today I heard the sound of weapons, shaking heaven and earth, and the noise of shouts. Has some misfortune come by the demons?"

"I must go out and see, so I know whether it is good or ill." Thinking so, he seized the victory-arrow and went with the army.

Chomphuphan led the glorious lord, turning along the forest paths. The night was dark, and they could not see the road. The king took the Chanthawathit arrow, radiant with bright power, set it to the string, aimed into the sky, and released it by his might.

It became stars and moon moving in the air, shining with clear radiance. It lit the forest like daylight, and the king hurried onward.

He saw the monkey warriors, troops lesser and greater, struck by weapons, guns, and fire, lying dead in heaps upon one another. Then he glimpsed glorious Hanuman, the chief warrior, lifeless, lying across Erawan's head. The righteous lord sat down and grieved.

[O Rai]

"Alas, wind-god's son, brave and fierce in skill and power. The three worlds fear your might. How have you been defeated by base enemies? Where could I find another like you, faithful, upright, and true? Was it fitting that your life should end, as if you had no power in your body? You lie fallen in the middle of the earth, beyond measure before all the worlds." Lamenting, with tears streaming, Phra Narai nearly lost consciousness.

Then he thought of Phra Lak, his beloved younger brother, the glory who shared his life, and he moved away from the powerful monkey lord.

He glanced and saw the son of Phra Thinakon, and brave Angkhot the monkey, and all eighteen crowned commanders lying dead, scattered everywhere. His love and regret were beyond thought. His heart burned as if in flame. The sky-ruling lord sank down in grief and lamented.

[O Rai]

"Alas, son of Phra Thinakon, whose might surpasses heaven. Was it fitting that your life should end? It is a wonder past belief. Even when the ten-faced asura had power to subdue the three worlds, victory was said to belong to the monkey lord when he broke the splendid umbrella. Alas, Angkhot, steadfast and bold in war, born in Amarin's line and mighty in power, now struck by an arrow and lying on the ground. Alas, eighteen crowned ones, all brave sons of heaven, descended to help subdue demons. Have you come to be defeated by base foes? This brings shame and disgrace before the wicked yakshas, and the three worlds will speak blame." The sky-lord lamented in grief.

Then he glanced and saw Phra Lak, struck by the mighty yaksha's sacred arrow, fixed in his breast and fallen in the middle of the earth. Phra Chakri hurried to him.

With both hands he grasped the arrow and pulled, but it would not shift or come free. It was fixed firm as if pinned in place, and his heart burned beyond measure. He lowered himself beside his brother, gently lifted his head into his lap, and tears streamed down over his face while the discus-bearing lord lamented.

"Alas, beloved companion in hardship. You suffered so much because of me. You meant to help subdue the asuras. Have you come to die and lose your life? Why, dear one, were you so careless as to be struck by demon weapons three times? When the powerful Mokhasak struck you, you nearly lost your life. I sent glorious Hanuman to tell Phra Phrot, and medicine was brought, ground, mixed, and applied, so you revived. When you were struck by the Nagabas, the arrow-weapon of Intharachit the yaksha, mighty Garuda came, swooped down, and drove the nagas away; so your life was saved. This time, what can I do? The sacred arrow is so terrible. Who will help you now, beloved brother?

"Counting the Solar Line of Ayutthaya, descended through the royal lineage of the discus, there were four of us: the three beautiful younger brothers and I, who subdue the yakshas. I left the two younger brothers to rule the city and support the armies, while we two, with beautiful Sida, endured hardship and grief wandering in the forest. We suffered in the wild until our father's vow was fulfilled. The war is still not finished, and now you have cast off your life and fled from me. My heart, it was not enough to be parted from my wife; now I must suffer the loss of my brother too." Lamenting in terrible grief, the sky-ruling lord lost consciousness completely.

Then Chomphuphan and the monkey troops saw Phra Harirak Chakri grieving for his younger brother, with no voice, no strength, and no breath through his nose. Thinking his life was ended, the army was startled and afraid, as if death itself had struck off their heads. Each ran in, crying and lamenting over Phra Chakri.

"Alas, crowned lord, radiant in power, able to subdue every realm, pillar of the world whom Phra Suli sent from Vaikuntha to slay false yakshas and destroy unrighteous envy. Before the war in Lanka is finished, both lords have come to lose their lives. The wind-god's son, Sukhrip, Angkhot, and the eighteen mighty commanders have all reached death. Now we will scatter." Each grieved aloud in uproar like the sound of a great storm, and all the forest-monkey soldiers fainted upon the earth.

Then Saran, the demon messenger, saw Phra Rama come out, grieve over his brother, and faint. The whole army had fallen too; no one seemed left. The two asuras rejoiced and hurried to the city of Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed and reported to King Raphanasura, master of war: "Mighty Phra Rama came in sorrow, grieving for his beloved brother from the first watch until he died. The army too has lost life; there is no one left alive."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard it like divine water bathing the demon lord's body. His ten mouths laughed with delight, and his twenty hands clapped thunderously. "Now young Sida will be finished with despising my stratagem. If I simply go tell the lovely one, she will doubt me because she loves her husband. I must invite the beautiful lady to see with her own eyes. Then I will receive her beneath the white umbrella and prosper in love." Thinking so, he gave command to the minister Mahothon: "Take the jeweled pavilion, splendid and bright, and let lovely Sida ride to visit her husband, lying dead on the battlefield together with the corpse of the younger brother. Let that demon woman Trichada lead the lady out."

Then Mahothon, the great minister, received the victorious demon king's command, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

He ordered the asura attendants in charge to bring the sky-bright jeweled pavilion and turn toward the garden.

When it reached the jeweled landing, splendid with radiance, the great minister went to Trichada.

He came near, sat before the beloved wife of Phiphek the yaksha, and told her the command of the lord of Lanka.

Then the thoughtful demon woman heard the great minister and was startled. She hurried away.

When she arrived, she bowed her head at the feet of Phra Laksami and reported: "Thotsakan the asura has sent the minister out to say that mighty Phra Lak has been struck by Intharachit's arrow and lies dead on the earth with the whole army. Your royal husband came grieving, embraced his brother, and wept until he too went to heaven, there together on the field. He has brought the golden pavilion, which travels through the air of heaven, to offer to Your Majesty, so you may go visit the body of your righteous husband."

Then the beloved chief queen heard the news, and her breast burned. The lady was shaken and frightened, suffering and distressed beyond measure, as if she could not hold her body upright. Tears filled her eyes, and she beat her breast, weeping in grief.

Then Trichada the yakshi bowed at the lady's feet and spoke wisely: "Your Majesty, restrain your weeping and hold back this sorrow. This matter is not yet seen with our own eyes. Let the beautiful lady go and see whether the two kings of the Solar Line have truly died. Hear your servant, noble lady. It is not good to strike yourself before the illness is known."

Then beautiful Sida, the queen, heard Trichada the demon woman and recovered some awareness. She rose from the couch, lovely as a heavenly painting, and with Trichada came to the splendid pavilion.

O jeweled pavilion, flashing with bright radiance. Its five spires rose like palaces, with crystal, coral, and diamond work interlaid. Golden tiers hung with jeweled tassels. Garuda thrones and curling ornament divided its designs. Across the floor were images of gods, gandharvas, deities, and kinnara. It moved on clouds, floating through the sky, bright and shining. Its light rivaled the moon's glow and made the heavens gleam, like the moon itself traveling and shining among scattered stars, moving quickly through the air.

When it reached the battlefield, it drifted down from the sky and stopped upon the earth as if it had a mind and spirit. Sida saw monkey soldiers scattered everywhere, wounded and lifeless. Her young breast went cold and silent as if she had entered a desolate cemetery. She descended from the great pavilion, burning with fear and grief, and with Trichada went to search for Phra Chakri.

She saw the wind-god's son lying dead across the elephant's head. Startled beyond sense, the queen lowered herself and grieved.

"Alas, bold Hanuman, chief warrior, strong and mighty. You dared serve Phra Chakri and brought me the ring and scarf, so that I did not die. Your merit to me has no end. You were faithful to the sky-ruling lord; where could anyone find your equal? Alone you drove and fought Sahatsakuman the yaksha, killed all his army, then tricked the demons and burned their city. This time, with many monkeys beside you, you have been defeated by Intharachit's deluded hand and lost your life. It is astonishing. What a waste for one of the monkey lineage, famous through all three worlds." Lamenting, the lady's tears filled her face, and she nearly lost consciousness.

Then she thought of the conch-bearing lord and radiant Phra Lak, and she moved away from the powerful monkey lord.

She saw Phra Hariwong embracing Phra Lak, the younger prince, both collapsed upon the earth. The lady ran in.

She lowered herself beside the royal feet, tears pouring in streams. She embraced his ankles and lamented.

"Alas, Phra Hariwong, Garuda-bearing lord. The sages, gods, and sons of heaven gathered and invited you to cleanse unrighteousness from those who oppressed the earth. Was it fitting that you could not subdue the yakshas, but came to die with your brother, both lying on the ground, your bodies stained with dust? This is not like Narai of Vaikuntha. The lineage of the discus-kings is diminished, power diminished as if before the wicked, the glory of Ayutthaya's Solar Line diminished.

"All this is because karma answered me. I, your younger one, became attached to the golden deer and begged Your Majesty to follow it. Worse still, I drove Phra Lak away, and so lost to the yaksha's trick. Therefore you had to come fight to recover me, and the sky-ruling lord suffered greatly. Alas, dear Lak, my companion in hardship, whose power surpassed the earth. How have you lost advantage to base enemies? When your elder brother has died too, who will help his younger one? Or have you two deliberately gone together, fleeing to the eternal heaven? Alas, jewel of the discus, your servant has come, lord of the bow. Open your eyes, great king, and look at your wife's face before the sorrow eases. Since you have laid down your life, how can I go on living?" Lamenting in terrible grief, she fainted at Phra Chakri's feet.

Then Trichada the yakshi saw the chief queen grieving over the two kings, lying with her face still at the feet of her sovereign husband. She came in, embraced the lady, and lamented in grief.

"Alas, supreme young queen, your like cannot be found anywhere under heaven. You are so splendid, surpassing all women, fit to be consort of the emperor-lord. I, your servant, had no kin and was parted from my husband, but by coming to you I found safety and peace. I took refuge at your jeweled feet, cooled and sheltered as beneath a splendid parasol. When Phraya Phiphek was driven out, he too took refuge at the feet of the bow-bearing lord, and we gained lasting happiness, our heat eased beneath the shade of your crown. The two kings' mercy is greater than the sky's radiance. Was it fitting that they should lose their lives and flee from your servant to heaven? Now where shall I turn my face for shelter like my beloved mistress?" Speaking and grieving, the lady nearly lost her senses.

When her grief had somewhat eased, Trichada stroked and touched the beautiful lady's whole body. It was soft and warm in every limb, so she knew the queen had not died. She massaged and pressed the feet of the beloved chief queen, comforting and awakening her with gentle words, speaking sweetly again and again.

Then beloved Phra Laksami heard Trichada's voice and felt the cool water that had been sprinkled over her. The young queen gradually recovered spirit and consciousness, rose again, and looked upon the face of the lord of the three worlds, her grief growing many times greater.

Then Trichada the yakshi saw that the lady had somewhat recovered her senses and reported: "Mother, calm and quench your grief over this separation. Your royal husband, lord of the sky, has not lost his life."

Then lovely Sida heard Trichada's words and asked: "How do you know that His Majesty has not died? Or are you only saying this to ease my heart? I still do not believe your speech."

Then Trichada the yakshi bowed her head at the lady's feet and answered: "Mother, do not doubt or suspect. I do not speak falsely, beautiful one. This pavilion you ride is from ancient times. It is like the powerful jeweled discus of a universal emperor, a thing of sure omen for a woman whose husband is dead. If she sits in it, it will not carry her away into the sky.

"Once Thotsakan the asura transformed into a god and went up to deceive heavenly apsaras. He stayed away many days and did not return. Montho grieved and was afraid her husband had died. She tested the pavilion and sat in it, and it rose into the air, circled, and returned down to earth. I saw that proof with my own eyes. Another matter: your husband is the four-armed lord who came from Vaikuntha to subdue the asuras. It is wrong to think his life could end. Consider this first, and do not suffer so greatly. Please return, noble lady, to your dwelling and be at peace."

Then young Sida, beloved and worthy of pity, heard Trichada explain the matter, and her heart cleared. She rejoiced as if lord Kosit had poured immortal nectar over her. She calmed and stopped her grief, raised joined hands, and lifted them over her jeweled crown. She paid homage to all the ranks of gods and proclaimed in royal words: "This time, may the gods show mercy: mighty Brahma, lord Makhawan, Virulhok, Virupak, powerful Wetsuwan, great Thotsarot, all the hosts of radiant gods, all tree spirits and mountain gods throughout the ten directions. I entrust Phra Harirak and Phra Lak, his younger brother, to you. Help protect the two kings from danger and stain."

When she had entrusted the two lords of the Solar Line, Phra Laksami bowed at the feet of Phra Chakri and spoke tenderly: "Remain here, jewel above my head. Your wife must now take leave, lord of the bow. It is karma that forces this parting." Speaking so, she covered her breast and grieved.

When the beloved chief queen had somewhat restrained her sorrow, she looked upon the face of her royal husband and sighed. Then she glanced at Phra Lak. Love made her unwilling to go, but she steadied her heart and went away from the four-armed lord.

When she reached the jeweled pavilion, splendid and radiant, she sat down upon the ground and raised joined hands. Then she made a vow of truth: "By the power of myself, beautiful Sida, who has been faithful to Phra Chakri and has delighted in no other man, may all the gods, in every land, stream, ford, forest, and great wood, and may truthful Mother Earth help me see the truth plainly. If Phra Hariwong has lost his embodied life, then may the sky-bright jeweled pavilion not carry me up into the heavens. If the lord of the three worlds has not yet reached the end of his life, then may this Brahma-ornamented seat carry me swiftly away by its power." Having made the test, the chief queen invited Trichada the yakshi and walked up into the splendid jeweled pavilion.

O flower, divine pavilion of the brave ten-faced king. It lifted and floated into the sky as if it had mind and heart. Its radiance blazed with rainbow light, shining beside the moon. Brightness touched the lovely lady's face, glowing among the stars. It wheeled and circled like a flying swan, passing clockwise around the bow-bearing lord. Three times it floated high in the sky, then flew swiftly back to the garden.
