This is the fifty-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Phiphek's return from the fruit-gathering expedition, his revival of Hanuman, Phiphek's explanation of Intharachit's Brahmastra deception, Hanuman's journey to Mount Awut for Phra Isuan's medicine, the revival of Phra Lak and the monkey army, Thotsakan's discovery that the enemies live, Intharachit's proposal of the Kumphaniya rite and the Sukhachan deception, Sukhachan's viewing of Sida in the garden, and Intharachit's march with the false Sida at the rear of his chariot.

The Medicine Mountain and Sukhachan's Deception

Then Phiphek the yaksha led the monkey soldiers to the Ambhawan forest. They turned through the woods gathering fruits until the sun's light was gone. When their carrying poles were full, the demon led them all back.

They walked along the forest road. Phiphek's right eye twitched; fear shook through his whole body, and the asura hurried on.

When he reached the victory-camp on the emerald mountain-slope, he went to the pavilion of the four-armed lord and saw only the monkeys keeping guard. They sat silent and downcast, with no look of happiness. He asked, "Where has the Garuda-bearing lord gone today?"

Then the chief monkey commanders raised joined hands and told him the whole matter from the beginning.

Then Phiphek the yaksha learned the news, and his breast burned as if his life would end. All the monkey troops were startled, confused, and trembling. They threw down their baskets and poles together, and the demon led them quickly onward.

They walked through the night along the great road. The air was cold and still, emptying the heart, until they came near Phra Chakri's victory-camp.

When he reached the battlefield, he found the glorious monkey troops fallen senseless, dead and heaped upon one another, scattered across the earth. Then he saw mighty Hanuman lying across the elephant's head, fallen upon the ground. The demon lord was more deeply alarmed. "How can this be? The wind-god's son, fierce in power and able to subdue the three worlds, lies fallen like one of the wicked, dead by the enemy's hand." Then he thought: "It must be wrong that Hanuman should lose his life, for he is the son of Phra Phai, radiant in power. He must be stunned by poison. If wind touches his body, he will revive." Thinking so, he hurried close to the monkey.

He sat down and looked at Hanuman's face, his bold bearing and battle-skill. His eyes were red like the sun's light, and his hands gripped the powerful diamond trident. His posture seemed ready to spring up and leap into battle with the yakshas. Even fallen, he had not failed his glory as chief warrior. Thinking so, Phiphek raised his hands over his head, bowed to all the gods through every heaven and to the sixteen Brahma realms, and recited a powerful spell.

When he had completed seven rounds, he blew straight into the splendid monkey's mouth. Wind ran through all his limbs, and the asura called to the monkey.

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in war, when Phra Phai's wind entered his belly, lost the poison of the arrow. Hearing the voice as well, the monkey lord revived. He saw Phiphek, rejoiced, rose, sat up, and bowed to the asura.

Then Phiphek the yaksha spoke with gracious words and asked: "Listen, monkey lord. How has this happened, making all the monkeys fall dead, scattered across the whole earth by the hand of a common enemy?"

Then the wind-god's son, brave and powerful, heard Phiphek the demon lord and told the whole matter from the beginning: "My defeat was not because I lost to asura power. Lord Indra of heaven came riding great Erawan in the clouds, with gods and heavenly women around him. They sang, danced, and played until the whole sky resounded. The younger prince became bewildered and careless. Then the king of gods shot an arrow. It struck the younger brother of the four-armed lord, and the eighteen monkeys lost their lives. The hosts of heavenly sons hurled weapons to kill us. The great monkey army was destroyed. Makhawan did all this. I was wounded in spirit beyond thought and meant to kill Kosi. I sprang up to fight, broke the neck of Erawan, and he struck me with his bow. I fell as if my life were gone. Since you came in time to heal me, your kindness is beyond telling."

Then Phiphek the yaksha listened and answered: "It was not mighty Indra. Intharachit made a stratagem and transformed into lord Kosit so none would know he was the enemy. He deceived you in order to destroy your lives. In war, if one does not guard oneself, one can lose to such a trick. Soldiers and commanders have died throughout the victory-camp. My grief is multiplied beyond measure." Having spoken, he led Hanuman and the monkey attendants through the corpses of the monkey army, and the asura hurried on.

Looking across the battlefield, he saw Phra Hariwong, lord of the bow, embracing his powerful younger brother and lying helpless on the ground. Phiphek was startled as if mighty Death himself had come to destroy his life. He and powerful Hanuman went near the incarnate lord.

The two commanders sat down at the feet of the lord of the three worlds. Phiphek the asura embraced Phra Chakri's right foot. The wind-god's son embraced the left ankle of glorious Phra Narai. In extreme grief and distress, they lamented.

Phiphek said, "Alas, Phra Chakrakrit, whose merit and power spread through heaven, shelter of perfected beings and gods, like a jeweled parasol over the world. Was it fitting that you should fall on the ground, lying helpless and embracing your younger brother, your body covered with painful dust, as if you were a common wicked man?"

Hanuman said, "Alas, Phra Hariwong, powerful enough to subdue the three worlds, supreme king, excellent beyond all, pillar of the earth. How have you both fallen senseless on one another, like two golden logs, pitiful, touched by dust, by passing wind, and by the dew upon the sand?"

Phiphek said, "Alas, younger prince, struck by the asura's arrow, terrifying to the heart. This happened because you did not guard yourself, and so you lost to the very cruel yaksha for the third time. Where could another be found like you of the Solar Line, faithful to the conch-bearing lord, upright, not thinking of your own life, facing service until death?"

The wind-god's son said, "Alas, this time I lost my standing as chief warrior. My sorrow cannot be measured. I have acted in a way that shames the royal feet. Since the golden bodhi-shelter lord has come to such suffering, it would have been better for my life to end." The two commanders lamented until they nearly lost consciousness.

Then Chomphuphan the splendid monkey and the monkey troops heard the two commanders grieving. Dew also touched them, so their grief eased and passed away. Each recovered feeling in his body; soldiers and commanders revived. Seeing battle-bold Hanuman and Phiphek of the yaksha Solar Line, each rejoiced as if he had received divine water.

Then Phiphek the yaksha and the powerful wind-god's son eased somewhat from grief and sorrow. Together they massaged and pressed the feet of Phra Narai, the supreme king, and awakened the righteous lord with gentle words.

Then the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds heard the voices of the asura and the monkey. The four-armed lord gradually regained awareness. Breath that had been blocked moved properly through his nose. He opened his eyes and saw the asura and the powerful wind-god's son. His grief settled enough that he could raise his body. He asked: "How is this, Phiphek the asura? Phra Lak, my younger brother, and the splendid monkey army have been struck by the arrow and lost their lives. This time I see a strange thing: Erawan the elephant of discus-bearing Amarin has somehow come with the yaksha, and its neck is broken, its life ended."

Then Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal command and answered: "This elephant is an illusion-elephant of bold Intharachit. He himself transformed into Makhawan and planned by trickery to gain victory. This arrow is called the Brahmastra. Phra Sayambhu, the self-born lord, granted it, and its power is fierce enough to subdue all three worlds."

Then Phra Krishnuharak, lord of the bow, heard Phiphek the asura and gave command: "Mighty Phra Lak and the monkey warriors were struck by his arrow and lost their lives. What plan or remedy can heal them?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek bowed his head at the feet and replied: "I know clearly that there is medicine to heal the demon's victory-arrow, but I do not know it in every detail as Chomphuphan the minister does, for Phra Suli once sent him to inspect the medicines."

Then brave Chomphuphan bowed his head at Phra Chakri's feet and answered: "What Phiphek the demon has reported is not false. When I was still a servant beneath Phra Suli's feet, the lord sent me to inspect all medicines in the four continents. The medicine to heal the asura's Brahmastra is on Mount Awut in great Eastern Videha. The road there is very far, and a fierce sharp discus spins there without ever stopping. Anyone who enters that mountain dies beneath the keen discus. By the world-lord's command, when Narai incarnates as Phra Rama of the great Ayutthaya Solar Line, and his younger brother is struck by the demon lord's arrow, then his powerful warrior, named battle-skilled Hanuman, son of Phra Phai, must go to Mount Awut. By his power the discus will stop. Then he can bring Phra Isuan's medicine to heal the yaksha's Brahmastra. Phra Lak and the monkey army will return to life."

Then Phra Krishnuharak, lord of the bow, heard Chomphuphan the monkey and gave command: "Listen, bold wind-god's son, you of fierce and brave power. Hurry by your might to great Mount Awut. Bring medicine to heal Phra Lak, struck by the powerful yaksha's arrow, and the monkey army, in time within this night."

Then the wind-god's son, brave and powerful, bowed his head to receive the incarnate lord's command. He raised joined hands, took leave, and crawled back out.

He raised his hands in homage to Phra Sayambhu, lord of the worlds, closed his eyes, recited meditation, and transformed his monkey body.

He made it as large as great Brahma, radiant and bright in power. He kicked off and sprang into the sky, flying by his strength.

Fast as the force of blowing wind, he hurried through the air, piercing mist and emerging through cloud-petals in less than the blink of an eye.

When he arrived and hovered in the sky, the monkey looked toward the splendid mountain-peak. He saw Phra Suli's sharp discus stopped in place and no longer turning. Certain in his heart, the monkey lord went straight down to the great mountain-peak. By his fierce power, the sound thundered and shook in uproar.

Then the assembled gods who guarded all the medicines of Phra Isuan heard the shaking thunder, and the whole mountain trembled. Startled, shaken in every limb, they looked toward the mountain-peak and saw a mighty monkey, white and radiant over his whole body, with glassy fangs and graceful earrings. By wisdom they understood: Narai incarnate has come to subdue the base yakshas; he must have sent this one to gather medicine to heal the arrow of the common asura. Thinking so, they called out at once: "Ho, brave monkey lord. Why have you come? Do you not fear losing your life? What do you seek?"

Then bold Hanuman, the great warrior, heard and answered: "The four-armed sky-ruling lord is waging war with the ten-faced one. Phra Lak, his younger brother, was struck by the mighty Brahmastra of Intharachit. The king commanded me to come here to take this medicine and heal the poison afflicting the younger brother of Phra Chakrakrit, according to the command that the king of gods and world-lord granted."

Then the gods, lesser and greater, listened and understood without doubt. The gods answered: "If Phra Narai sent you to take the medicine on the mountain-peak to heal the poison of the asura's arrow, that accords with the world-lord's command. But the grant specifically says the whole mountain must be lifted and carried. You cannot pluck or draw out the medicine as you wish. Monkey, scoop up the mountain. We gods who guard the medicine will follow to attend the glorious lord, and then we will bring the mountain back."

Then the wind-god's son, brave and powerful, displayed his might and went in to scoop up Mount Awut.

He lifted it, placed it on his shoulder, and carried it into the high sky. He flew by fierce power, and the sons of heaven helped support it.

When he reached the battlefield, the monkey lord rejoiced and tried to set the great mountain down. But it would not descend to the earth, and this troubled his heart. He asked the powerful gods: "Listen, divine guardians. Why will Mount Awut not descend when I try to set it upon the ground?"

Then the gods guarding the splendid mountain heard and answered: "Listen, powerful monkey. Phra Sayambhu gave a royal command, granting this medicine to restore the lives of the Garuda-bearing Phra Chakrakrit's people. But this island of Lanka is a small island floating in the sea. It is not fitting for pure, enduring Mount Awut to be set here. You, mighty one, should carry the divine mountain to the north. Let Phra Phai blow a gentle breeze, carrying the medicine's scent to touch the younger brother of Phra Harirak and the monkey army. They will return to life without difficulty."

Then bold Hanuman, the great warrior, heard the gods' words and carried the mountain floating onward by his power.

The medicine fragrance spread and touched glorious Phra Lak of the Solar Line. The monkey ministers and troops also returned to life together.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line, Angkhot, the son of Phra Suriyan, and all the monkey forces recovered consciousness. Seeing Phra Chakri, lord of the bow, each rose from the ground, raised hands, and crouched in glad homage. Phra Lak embraced the feet of his radiant elder brother and reported: "This battle was not with the base asuras. Mighty lord Kosit joined with the yakshas. He rode Erawan through the air with gods attending him. There were also heavenly apsaras dancing and singing sweetly, floating in the sky. I thought they were not wicked enemies. I, your younger brother, became bewildered and careless. The king of gods released the sacred arrow. It struck me and ended my life, but Your powerful Majesty came to heal me in time. I ask mercy from the Garuda-bearing lord: in my resentment I would raise the army to heaven and kill all the gods."

Then Phra Krishnuharak heard and gave command: "It was not powerful Indra. Intharachit made a stratagem, transforming himself into lord Kosit. You lost advantage to the enemy. Do not be angry with the thousand-eyed one."

Then the gods guarding the great mountain saw Phra Lak revived and rejoiced. They shouted blessing and victory: "May the two lords hold mighty power, blazing with the radiance of their arrows, and subdue the false enemies who ravage the earth. May they be cool as a jeweled parasol over the heads of perfected beings and gods in every realm. May the two kings live in safety. We now ask leave to return and guard the medicine according to the charge of lord Phra Isuan." Having spoken, they carried the mountain and flew away through the sky.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, lord of the bow, when the gods had blessed them and carried the mountain back, was filled with gladness. His face shone like the moon. He invited his beloved younger brother to mount the jeweled victory-chariot. With the monkey ministers and the troops at left and right, he withdrew the army back to the pavilion. Their shouts thundered through sky and earth.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line, at midnight, entered his splendid bed. He was filled with happiness because it matched his desire, yet his heart stirred toward Sida, his beloved. "Tomorrow I will go and bring the lovely lady in. I will set her as crown of women, with a hundred thousand heavenly maidens at her left and right. She will share the splendid white umbrella, share my shining couch, share love and lie beside my pillow, close and beloved." Deluded, he muttered and raved, unable to sleep deeply.

Just then he heard the sound of loud shouting, echoing in every direction as if an enemy army had broken in. The asura was startled and afraid. "How can this be? Those enemies were all dead. How have they come back to life? It is a wonder beyond telling. Why has it happened?" Heat rose in him as if a venomous arrow had pierced the demon's heart. His mind lost steadiness. He sprang up from the bed, called the palace women, all hundred sixty thousand of them assembled, and proceeded to Intharachit's palace.

When he arrived, he saw his beloved son lying sound asleep on the shining jeweled couch, his hand raised across his face. Anger like venom-fire touched his heart. He stamped his feet, and his ten mouths called out. The summons thundered and shook: "The enemies have not died. Why are you sleeping here like this?"

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha heard the uproar. The asura woke from sleep, opened his eyes, glanced, and saw his royal father. Startled, he sprang down and bowed at the demon king's feet.

Then the wise and brave ten-headed one mounted the radiant jeweled couch and commanded: "I heard the sound of shouting echoing across the sky and shaking the earth. It seems the enemies who died have returned to life."

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha heard the royal command. The asura was startled and stunned in thought, burning as if lying in the fire of doom. He answered the absolute words: "If the enemies have escaped and returned alive, your son thinks it strange and wrong. This Brahmastra arrow has power to subdue all three worlds. It must be Phiphek, the wicked demon lord, who told them the remedy."

Then Saran, the energetic messenger, saw that the enemies had not lost their lives, but were shouting until the earth thundered. Fear and alarm were beyond thought, as if his life would end. The two commanders mounted swift horses and drove into Lanka.

When they reached the royal residence, they were told that the yaksha king had gone to his son's palace, so the asuras quickly followed.

They sat before the demon king, bowed, and reported: "Phra Lak and the forest-monkeys who had died by the prince's arrow were seen by Phra Rama, who came and wept over his beloved. All the troops also died. Afterward Phiphek the traitor came and lamented over Phra Rama. Now the elder human and the wild-monkey army have revived and escaped alive. I watched and saw bold Hanuman fly through the air carrying a great mountain from the south by mighty power. Phra Lak regained his senses, and all the monkey army shouted in uproar. Now the troops have withdrawn to the golden pavilion."

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard and understood without doubt. He commanded: "Listen, Intharachit, beloved son, my cherished eye. You are mighty in power, able to subdue even the sixteen heavens. Now the enemies who died have all returned alive. The foe is arrogant and proud. What do you think should be done?"

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, bowed his head and answered: "This war is very bold. They have armies, power, and keen wisdom. Among all the Solar Line of yakshas, it is hard to stand against Phra Lak. He has been struck by spear and arrow three times; he dies and yet comes back to life. When we go out to fight, we lose soldiers and commanders beyond counting. When monkeys die, they return again. It is difficult to kill them.

"Now there remains a text named the Kumphaniya, great in power. If I complete it over seven days, my body will become a perfected body, enough, I think, to withstand the enemies and continue fighting them. There is also another battle-stratagem, deep enough to deceive them. The humans have raised the army because they followed the wife here. Sukhachan fled the front line, and his penalty is death. I ask that he be made to transform his body into Sida and ride at the rear of my chariot. When we reach the front of the army, he will mock them, and I will cut off his head and throw it to them, saying by trickery that I am raising the army to fight Ayutthaya. Then I will go around and set up the rite at Cakkrawan mountain. If Lak and Rama do not withdraw the army, I will return to fight."

Then bold King Raphanasura heard his son's plan. The demon lord rejoiced as if the war had already been won and he had gained the wealth of the three worlds. He embraced his beloved son, kissed his face, and said: "You have not wasted Brahma's line. Your wisdom, power, and courage are great. As for the stratagem you have devised, father agrees with everything." Having spoken, he commanded the great demon ministers: "As for vile Sukhachan, who was imprisoned after Kumbhakan's war, the law condemns his crime to death, along with his clan and lineage. Bring him out."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha bowed his head to receive the royal command, paid homage, took leave, and hurried away.

When he reached the prison-house, he sat down and ordered the chief Phathamrong: "Now the lord of the three worlds commands that Sukhachan the asura be released. Bring him up before the crest-lord of the demon city, into the prince's royal hall. Hurry now, demon lord."

Then the brave Phathamrong officer heard the royal command and ran inside in haste.

He had the chains, fetters, stocks, and every bond removed, then quickly brought Sukhachan out and handed him to the great minister.

Then Paowanasura the yaksha led Sukhachan the asura to the royal hall.

When they arrived, he led him in before the crest-lord of Brahma's line. Sukhachan bowed his head in homage in the middle of the demon ministers.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha mounted the shining jeweled couch and commanded: "Ho, Sukhachan. I raised you as a great soldier. When the enemy pressed the victorious city, you were not loyal. I sent you out to war with Kumbhakan the yaksha, but you feared the enemy king and fled back from the front. The law says the penalty is death for seven generations, women and men alike. I will have your life destroyed. What will you say?"

Then Sukhachan, the great soldier, heard the sky-ruling lord's command. He bowed and answered the royal words: "This body of mine is wicked and more ugly than the other yakshas. If the penalty reaches my life, all rests upon Your Majesty's mercy."

Then King Raphanasura heard and commanded: "Listen, Sukhachan the asura. Transform your body into a shape that stirs pity and love, like young, graceful Sida. Ride at the rear of Intharachit's chariot and make gestures to deceive bow-bearing Phra Rama. At the front of the monkey army, your head will be cut off and thrown down, so the enemies see it with their own eyes. If you can do this, your wife, children, brothers, and kin will be kept alive together with the asura line."

Then Sukhachan the yaksha heard and answered the royal words: "This body of mine was sentenced to death. Since Your Majesty grants life to my kin, friends, wife, and children, the kindness is beyond description. I offer my life and will serve without displeasing the feet of the great king of Brahma's line. But I have not yet seen clearly the lovely lady Sida."

Then King Raphanasura heard Sukhachan and rejoiced as if he had gained the edge of Dusit heaven. He gave absolute command to Intharachit the yaksha: "Have them take this asura to the garden. Let him see the face and features of young, sorrowing Sida. Then raise the demon army and go out to destroy the enemy." As he commanded, he left the radiant shining seat and returned to the bright palace, with beautiful palace women following.

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, when his royal father had returned to the great victorious palace, gave royal command to the great demon minister: "Take Sukhachan out to see the noble lady Sida."

Then Ritthikasura the yaksha bowed his head to receive the royal command and hurried away with the asura.

When they reached the garden where the beloved young lady lived, they stopped near her residence, and he pointed with his hand, telling the demon.

Then active Sukhachan recited spells with a fierce heart, and the demon transformed his body.

At once his body changed into a lovely young demon woman, holding a tray of flowers in her hands. She went to the noble lady's dwelling.

When she arrived, she bowed at the lotus feet of beloved Sida, made a show of lasting gladness, joined her hands, and offered the flower garland.

Then young, sorrowing Sida did not understand Sukhachan's trick. The young lady asked: "Why has a young woman brought me this garland? What task or concern is there? Who sent you here?"

Then Sukhachan the yaksha raised joined fingers and answered deceitfully: "I live in the city. I heard that Phra Rama of the Solar Line, your royal husband, beautiful lady, has raised the monkey army to destroy the asuras in Lanka. Therefore I came to attend my lady and place myself beneath your protection." As he spoke, he glanced with his eyes at the lovely lady, fixing her human features, face, form, and shape in his mind. He remembered every detail, then the demon lord took leave of the queen.

When he was out of sight, he changed back into yaksha form and went to the great minister at the edge of the garden.

Then Ritthikasura the yaksha saw Sukhachan come out, and they quickly went on together.

When they neared the royal residence, the battle-skilled demon minister had powerful Sukhachan transform into lovely Sida.

Then Sukhachan the yaksha received the great minister's word, and the asura transformed his body.

He became slender, graceful, and drooping in form, like beautiful Sida. He moved his hands and walked with swaying grace, and Ritthikasura followed.

When they reached the prince's audience hall, they sat down, bowed with joined hands, and crouched low from far away inside the splendid royal hall.

Then the brave son of the ten-headed king mounted the shining jeweled couch, and the demon lord looked. Seeing the lady with the great minister, the asura understood and knew that powerful Sukhachan had transformed into the noble lady Sida.

[Admiring Beauty]

He examined and stared at the beauty: beauty that charmed and tempted love, beautiful face, beautiful eyes pleasing to see, beautiful brows and nose, graceful and lovely; beautiful mouth as if about to smile, beautiful hair, cheeks, and breasts; beautiful arms like the trunk of Chaddanta; beautiful complexion and body; beautiful manner, bearing, and conduct; beautiful grace, wondrous to look on; beautiful waist, softness, and form, surpassing all women on earth.

"Is this why my royal father loves the beautiful one so greatly? Whoever saw the queen would lose his heart." While admiring, he gave command to the great demon ministers: "Arrange the whole army in time for sunrise."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha bowed his head to receive the royal command, paid homage, took leave, and hurried away.

He levied soldiers skilled in war, four divisions bold and battle-wise. Elephant commanders mounted royal elephants, holding hooked blades and cutting weapons. Horse commanders rode Sindhava horses, holding lances and circling like turning wheels. Chariot commanders mounted firm chariots, holding bows and arrows. Infantry commanders prepared the battle-troops, choosing only the fierce and brave. Every hand held weapons, brandished and raised to fight. The victorious royal chariot was harnessed, splendid with nine gems and radiance, waiting at the jeweled landing for the asura to come.

Diamond belts shone like rainbow fall; directional plaques and breast ornaments glittered. Gold armlets coiled like dragons, and jewel-set bracelets gleamed. Diamond rings had Garuda settings; a coral-jeweled crown shone. His hand held the bright arrow and moved with grace as he came to the splendid landing.

Two thousand royal lions were harnessed to it, and Lothan drove it fast as a spinning wheel. Royal regalia escorted it in dense rows, with umbrellas, flags, and hanging banners. Pipes, drums, gongs, trumpets, and conches sounded sweetly as if shaking the mountain. The neighing of Sindhava horses, the roar of troops, the trumpeting of elephants, and the thunder of chariot wheels echoed together. Dark clouds of dust and smoke rose deep around them as they drove urgently onward.
