Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the fifty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Rama's dispatch of Phra Lak against Intharachit, Intharachit's false-Sida deception and beheading of Sukhachan, Phra Lak's grief-stricken return, Phiphek's divination that Sida is alive, the monkey commanders' confirmation that the corpse is male, Intharachit's establishment of the Kumphaniya rite at Cakkrawan mountain, Rama's decision to send Phra Lak to break the rite, and Phra Lak's first assault on the ritual hall.

Translation

The False Sida and the Broken Rite

Then Phra Harirak lay upon the shining couch until the sun was nearly bright. Cicadas and insects rang sweetly; bright roosters crowed in echoing calls. The musicians played pipes, drums, gongs, trumpets, conches, and bronze bells. The monkey troops and every company of warriors woke themselves, calling and warning one another to their tasks until the whole victory-camp roared in confusion.

He rose, bathed, and dressed, radiant like the moon. His hand held the powerful sacred arrow, and he went out among the troops.

Just then he heard the army's voice, shouting in an uproar as if the earth would turn over. He gave royal command: "Listen, Phiphek, demon lord, yaksha astrologer. Which asura is leading the army that has come out?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command of the lord of the three worlds and examined the hour. He bowed his head in homage and reported to the radiant lord of the realm: "The army that has come out is that of Intharachit the asura."

Then Phra Narai Chakrakrit of the Solar Line learned the enemy's news. The mighty lord commanded his younger brother: "You must raise the army to fight Intharachit the yaksha and kill him by your own power, beloved brother. But do not be careless as before. Guard Your Majesty very carefully, for the son of the ten-faced king often deceives by magic." Having spoken, he commanded the powerful son of Phra Athit: "Arrange the army for my younger brother to go out and kill the enemy."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He set five oceans of warriors in the vanguard, with Surakan as chief commander. Next came fierce Nilakhan, commanding seven oceans of monkey soldiers. In the royal army stood the younger prince with ten oceans of battle-skilled troops. Next came mighty Nilanon, commanding seven oceans of soldiers. In the rear guard, Chomphuphan commanded seven oceans of select splendid monkeys, all good fighters, brave and skilled. They were complete with every weapon, displaying fierce power until the earth thundered. The shining jeweled chariot was prepared, waiting for the righteous lord to depart.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, when the auspicious hour had come, went to the bathing place.

He washed and bathed with delight, putting on fragrance mixed with pollen. His trousers were jeweled, with curved stem-patterns, and his red fig-colored cloth shone. Fluttering side-cloths were worked with gold ornament. His robe was gold-patterned with vine designs. Directional plaques were all diamond-set. His breast ornament and chains were carved and interlaced. Hanging tassels were set with pearl-gems; jeweled girdles gleamed with rubies. Gold armlets coiled like dragons; rings had spreading Garuda settings. He wore a great diamond crown, radiant divine ear-ornaments, and held the powerful bow as he went to mount the victory-chariot.

O royal chariot, its wheels bright with emerald, its body lovely with three graceful curves, tiered and set with floating diamond clusters. Four golden faces shone cleanly, and the cut-throne glittered like a jeweled house. Garudas pressed into vinework beside the rail; colored light flashed through the sky. It was harnessed to four divine horses, and the charioteer drove it in shining haste. Royal regalia stood complete in ordered ranks, with banners and rows of umbrellas dense around it. Trumpets and conches sounded, gongs and drums answered and covered the uproar. The escorting troops shouted in a roar as they drove hard and hurried onward.

When he arrived, he saw the demon army standing firm at the foot of the great mountain. He halted his mighty troops before the asura army.

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, saw Phra Lak's army advance, and the asura rejoiced. He gave royal command to Lothan, the demon charioteer, ordering him to drive the jeweled chariot up through the asura troops.

He cried out: "Ho, Phra Lak. You are aggressive, raising a great army, laying a road across the sea, and coming to fight because of Sida. My royal father too has desire and love for that one woman; we have been killing one another over her, and both sides have lost troops. Thinking on it, there is no need for us to become base enemies for nothing. Young Sida I will send back. I have brought her here now. Younger prince, do you see her? Come receive the noble lady and give her to Phra Rama her husband."

Then radiant Phra Lak saw the asura's illusion-form and rejoiced, thinking it was Lady Sida. He called out: "Ho, Intharachit. Your thought is very good. You have quenched suffering and made all Lanka cool. By sending the lovely lady in the middle of battle, you are worthy to be the beloved son of the ten-faced lord, of King Khanlaihong's line. Quickly invite the beautiful chief queen and offer her to Phra Chakri."

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha clapped his hands, mocked him, and said: "Why speak this way, younger prince? This is not because we have faltered in war, as your words claim. You were struck by my arrow and rolled on the ground twice, yet you still speak without shame. Not only that, you would have me send her to Phra Rama. If you will not receive her, I will kill her and end her life." Speaking so, he seized Sukhachan by the hair, lifted the sword, and cried: "Hurry to receive the corpse. I will cut off the head and send it now."

Then Sukhachan the yaksha screamed at once, sounding like the voice of Lady Sida: "Alas, dear Lak. Is this how you love your elder brother? Why did you come speak words that deliberately anger the asura, until he is about to kill me, while you, jewel of my eyes, still stand watching? It is a waste that I kept my life, waiting for my royal husband. I hoped to serve beneath his feet, but I have come to destruction by the hand of the yaksha. Go tell Phra Chakri that his elder lady bows in farewell. His Majesty struggled and made effort, following me here to war with the yakshas, and because of this poor servant the sky-ruling lord has suffered and labored. His kindness is higher than heaven and earth, with nothing to compare. I ask the sky-ruling lord to withdraw the army and return to Ayutthaya, to rule his wealth, palace, and many attendants instead." Speaking these words, the asura grieved and lamented for life.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line did not know the demon's trick. The righteous lord was shocked and afraid, as if Lord Death had struck off his head. His face went pale and white; he stood stunned, without sense or awareness. He drew an arrow and set it to the string, meaning to destroy the yaksha, but he was helpless because the queen was in the asura's grasp.

Then Sukhrip, brave Angkhot, the eighteen crowned commanders, and the ministers were all furious and confused. They wanted to surge in and attack, to seize the queen if they could, but did not know what to do. All soldiers and commanders roared in uproar. Hanuman alone was fierce: his hands shook, his feet rose on tiptoe, and he fixed his aim. His eyes were red like firelight. His body stirred, and every hair stood up. He swung the trident, bared his fangs, and ground his teeth, roaring at the yaksha. His spirit was seized by rage; he longed to throw himself into the attack but was trapped in helplessness. Intharachit held the lady in the middle of the army. If they charged too late or too roughly, the fault would be theirs, as if they had caused her death.

Then Intharachit, brave and powerful, set one foot on Sukhachan's knee with fierce demon intent. His left hand seized the asura's head; his right hand brandished the sword. He struck down with demon strength, and the head was cut from the body.

He held it up and mocked: "Ho, Phra Lak, younger prince. Take Sida's head now and give it to your elder brother, so he may love and cherish it enough to satisfy him for losing the beautiful lady." Having spoken, he threw the asura's head down before the jeweled chariot.

When that was done, the demon laughed in delight, clapping his hands loudly. "Ho, humans of base hearts, boasting that you have power. You raised monkey troops to fight the yaksha line. Stay here on Lanka island. I will go to Dvaravati and kill the whole human lineage by the yaksha's hand." Having spoken, he withdrew the army and crossed the great water by his power.

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak Chakrakrit did not understand Intharachit's trick. He thought the lady had died. Tears streamed down his face, and he could barely hold his body. In terrible grief and sorrow, without sense or awareness, he withdrew the mighty army, with the eighteen crowned splendid monkeys, and turned the jeweled chariot back toward the pavilion.

When he arrived at the golden landing, he descended from the royal chariot and hurried into the presence of the four-armed lord.

He bowed and embraced the lotus feet of his elder brother, the bow-bearing lord of the Solar Line. He did not report the matter to the king, but sighed again and again. His senses, strength, and breath were gone. He lay motionless, as if his life would end.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and fortunate, saw his younger brother grieving and was startled. The king embraced him and commanded: "Jewel of my eyes, what has happened? You returned without telling me anything. You weep and fall silent, beloved brother." The more he thought, the stranger it seemed. His heart trembled as if struck by a discus, and tears streamed down his face as he lamented for his younger brother.

After he had been silent for a while, he thought again, forced his heart, and held back sorrow. He took his sacred arrow and washed it with fragrant water. Then he bathed the face and whole body of radiant Phra Lak, letting coolness soak through every limb, and the king called to his younger brother.

Then Phra Lak, the younger prince, was touched by fragrant water, cool through body and heart. Hearing the voice of Phra Hariwong as well, he revived. He raised joined hands and bowed at the king's feet, his heart burning many times over.

Then the radiant jewel of the discus spoke sweetly: "You who share your elder brother's life, today you went out to battle with Intharachit the yaksha. Why have you come back grieving, as if your life would end?"

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line sobbed as he reported to the righteous lord: "Today Intharachit the demon lord raised his fourfold army, a hundred thousand mighty soldiers, and brought the noble lady, my elder sister, on his jeweled chariot. He spoke in the way of friendship and dharma, to stop battle and killing, saying he would send the lady back to offer to the four-armed lord. Then he changed and spoke in provocation, with rude words toward Your Majesty's feet, and killed the chief queen in the middle of the army. When I would have attacked and seized Your Majesty's queen, she was in the asura's grasp, and there was nothing I could do. Now he has raised the army and crossed the great sea, saying he will go fight as far as glorious Ayutthaya, killing Your Majesty's royal kin and line by the yaksha's hand." Speaking so, he grieved as if his life would end.

Then Phra Narai of the radiant Solar Line heard this like a thunderbolt striking his heart. He lowered his face and wept in grief; tears poured in streams. Thinking of separation and immeasurable sorrow, the sky-ruling lord lamented.

"Alas, beloved companion in hardship. How have you come to die this time by the hand of unrighteous asuras? Day after day I did not see you, jewel of my eyes. Since the ten-faced one stole you away, I and dear Lak did not cherish our own lives. We followed, hoping to fight and end the whole brave lineage of Thotsakan, and to invite the beloved chief queen back to Ayutthaya. Since you have lost your life, why should I think of war with the yakshas? Even if I win, I will not regain you. There will be only grief and sorrow, the same as losing to the enemies; the three worlds will be able to scorn me. Losing my wife is like losing my heart. I have no wish to live on. What a defeat for one who gained Vaikuntha in the great lineage of Isara. My heart is wretched and shameful." The sky-lord lamented in grief.

Then he asked Phiphek the demon lord: "My younger brother Phra Lak says Sida is dead. Is it true, Phraya asura?"

Then the younger brother of the ten-faced yaksha heard Phra Chakri's command. He raised joined hands and took the omen. Counting from sun to moon, dividing the time without error, he knew truly that the lady had not died. Rejoicing, he reported with wisdom: "In that hour the sign is bad and says there was indeed a death, but it was not the noble woman. It was a condemned man transformed into her. Lady Sida herself is well."

Then radiant Phra Krishnuharak heard Phiphek the asura, and the king's anxiety somewhat eased. He gave royal command to battle-skilled Phraya Sukhrip: "Sukhrip, Hanuman, and powerful Angkhot, all three monkeys, hurry to the battlefield. Examine the corpse and see what it is, whether male or female. Inspect it until the truth is clear to your eyes."

Then the three brave and powerful monkeys bowed their heads to receive the royal command, paid homage, took leave, and hurried away.

When they reached Sukhachan's corpse, the three victorious warriors examined all the limbs and knew that this form was male. It had been deliberately transformed, unlike beautiful Sida. Each smiled in relief, and the three commanders returned together.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lord's feet and reported: "This body is a deceitful man who deliberately changed sex to become a woman. It is exactly as Phiphek divined. The one who died is not the queen. We your servants inspected everything in detail."

Then brave and wise Phra Chakri and victorious Phra Lak heard the three powerful warriors. All their grief, anxiety, suffering, and sorrow faded. They rejoiced as if they had gained a palace in the six-tiered heaven of Dusit. Then they consulted on the royal business of war, how to destroy the yaksha lineage. When that was finished, they moved gracefully into the splendid pavilion.

Then Intharachit, skilled in war, when he reached the ocean shore near the slope of Cakkrawan mountain, halted the royal chariot together with his fourfold army. Then he commanded the wise demon ministers: "Set up a splendid ritual hall in the middle of the dense bamboo grove, thirty-nine vast rooms, with offering vessels and sacrifice implements. According to the science, make one hundred eight fire-pits, and let no bright flame be lacking. Place new pots filled with fragrant water beside every fire. Provide one thousand flowers of each of seven colors every day without fail. Divide thirty oceans of soldiers to go and patrol: the outer ring circling like a wheel, the middle ring sitting guard, and the inner ring drawing rosaries and meditating. Do this according to the text for all seven days."

Then powerful Kalachak the demon received the command, paid homage, and hurried out.

He measured and assigned the rooms, each troop to its left or right side, high, large, broad, and long according to the asura king's command.

Then the demon troop-commanders drove the soldiers to clear the site and cut wood in confusion.

Some chopped, some dragged in disorder, some pulled with noise through the great forest. They cut the timber into pieces, gathered it together, and carried it in.

They built the ritual hall, towering high into the air, with thirty-nine vast rooms, gables, spires, and finials. The roof was covered with red cloth, with green edges and interwoven colors. The white ceiling shone cleanly, with flower garlands hanging and spreading fragrance. In the middle stood a radiant shining altar-seat, with splendid railings, umbrellas, and flags, and graceful banana and sugarcane offerings pleasing to the eye.

When every task was complete, he divided the demon soldiers into groups and ordered them to patrol according to the asura's command.

Then Intharachit, yaksha of the Solar Line, when the royal ritual hall was complete, went to bathe in the water.

He washed and bathed with pleasure, wearing sweet fragrant water. He put on broad woolen cloth and a red shoulder-cloth, bright and clean to the eye. He anointed himself with powder, bound up his matted hair, and took on the form of a forest ascetic. He wore a fine sacred thread, held a jeweled rosary in his right hand, and wrapped a cloth about his waist and loin, beautiful like a divine rishi. When this was finished, he went into the splendid ritual hall.

He lowered himself upon the radiant shining altar-seat and ordered powerful Kalachak and the demon host: "Quickly heap up the offering-fires. Make them rise, blaze, and glow. Let this continue for seven nights and seven days. Watch one another carefully."

Having commanded, he raised his hands above his head and worshiped the splendid Veda with incense, candles, and flower garlands. The asura took the powerful arrows: Vishnupana, Nagabas, and Brahmastra, and laid them across his lap. He closed his eyes, concentrated his spirit, and recited the Veda.

Then the troops, lesser and greater, all who were stationed in the inner ring, stoked the fire-pits together. They sat drawing rosaries, reading spells, closing their eyes, and binding the mind in firm meditation. The soldiers in the middle ring divided themselves by duty to inspect and guard. Those in the outer ring moved like a spinning wheel, shifting turns, circling left to right, calling signals and speaking to one another around the ritual ground.

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds lay upon the bright couch in the auspicious place. When the present time came and the rooster crowed, the sun rose over the mountain-peak, spreading light to rival the moon. Phra Phai blew a gentle breeze. All the flowers opened their petals and released sweet scent. Bees enjoyed the flower-nectar, and the incarnate lord woke from sleep.

He washed, bathed, and dressed, radiant like a heavenly figure. He took the powerful Brahmastra arrow and came out to the splendid pavilion.

The soldiers of both cities were ready, bowing their heads in dense ranks like stars surrounding the moon in the sky. The king gave command: "Listen, Phiphek the asura. Yesterday Intharachit the yaksha said he would go to glorious Ayutthaya. Is that true, or what is the matter?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command of the lord of the three worlds and examined the time. Pursuing the horoscope, the yaksha understood by wisdom. He raised joined hands and answered the royal command: "Mighty Intharachit raised his army and had a prisoner named Sukhachan transform into the young lady Sida. He brought him out and killed him by the trickery of the yakshas, to make us doubtful and confused. Then he said he would raise the army against the royal city of Ayutthaya, boasting bravely, but this was not true. When he crossed the water, his intent was to perform a rite named Kumphaniya, the great spell of radiant Brahma, on the slope of Cakkrawan mountain in the vast bamboo grove. If he completes seven days according to the text, he cannot be killed, and the demon troops will likewise be enduring and hard to overcome."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line heard Phiphek the demon and gave command: "This time, who do you think is brave enough to break the yaksha and destroy the Kumphaniya rite at great Cakkrawan mountain?"

Then Phiphek of the yaksha Solar Line heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and reported: "The soldiers in the pavilion likely cannot withstand his power. Let Phra Lak, sky-ruling lord, raise the mighty army to fight. By his age, the yaksha's death-time has arrived; the end of his life is cut off. Today he will die by the power of Phra Chakri's younger brother."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, lord of the bow, heard the asura's prophecy, and the king agreed in every respect. He spoke graciously: "You who share your elder brother's life, raise the army to Cakkrawan mountain. Destroy Intharachit's rite and ruin his knowledge by the power of your sacred arrow, so your name and feared might will be known as long as sun and moon endure."

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line heard the Garuda-bearing lord and bowed to receive the royal command. "As for the demon lord's rite, your beloved younger brother asks to serve. I will destroy it as desired, and not displease the feet of Your powerful Majesty."

Then the serpent-lineage lord, Phra Narai Chakrakrit, heard the younger brother who shared his life and rejoiced because the thought matched his heart. He embraced him and taught him: "Listen, companion in hardship. As you go to destroy the rite, do not let your spirit become careless. Fix your aim and watch to destroy the yaksha's weapons. Take Phiphek the astrologer with you, to be eyes and mind." Speaking so, he took three powerful arrows and handed them to him. "May all enemies and dangers be defeated by your mighty power, beloved brother."

Then mighty Phra Lak, bearer of the discus, raised joined hands before his face and received Phra Chakri's blessing and sacred arrows. He was delighted and glad, as if he had gained Kosi's treasure, fulfilling his wish to destroy the proud, arrogant asura.

Then the jewel of the discus gave royal command to mighty Phraya Sukhrip: "Arrange the great army quickly, like a lion-king. Choose the best monkey warriors from both cities to go with my mighty younger brother and destroy the demon's rite at Cakkrawan mountain. Let the force be forty oceans."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, the great warrior, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, paid homage, and hurried out.

He assigned bold Hanuman to command tiger-mounted soldiers as the vanguard. Angkhot, powerful one, led a rhinoceros-mounted attacking division. Nilanon commanded the bodyguard, whose troops rode lion-elephants. The royal army consisted of the best soldiers, riding buffaloes, lions, and boars. Chomphuphan, monkey adjutant, led warriors riding lions. Mighty Nilek commanded the reserve, whose monkeys rode chumpa beasts. Chomphuwaracha served as the rear guard, with soldiers riding antelope and mountain goats. All held every kind of weapon, rejoicing and swelling with power. They prepared the victory-chariot of lord Kosit, waiting at the shining jeweled landing for the younger brother of Phra Chakrakrit to come.

Then radiant Phra Lak, when the army was arranged, rejoiced as if he had gained the edge of heaven. He raised his hands and bowed at the lotus feet of his supreme elder brother, took leave, and went gracefully to bathe in the water.

Jeweled sprinklers scattered water like rain. He put on fragrance, sweet through the air. His trousers had naga designs at the hem; his cloth was worked with rice-offering and curling patterns. Fluttering panels were finished with champunot gold; side-cloths were set with topaz and rubies. His robe was gold-patterned with vinework; his jeweled girdle was carved with designs. Directional plaques, crystal breast ornaments, and three battle-chains crossed him. Hanging tassels of divine jewels and rubies shone against gold. Armlets were shaped as serpents; diamond rings flashed. A jeweled crown, ear-ornaments, and garnet flowers adorned him. He girded on the sacred jeweled sword, held the bow in his right hand, and, beautiful as Amarin, walked to mount the victory-chariot.

O royal chariot, its axles, hubs, and wheels splendid with jewels; its curved yoke lovely and graceful; its tiered golden throne shining with gems. Four faces were beautiful as golden palaces, the lion-seat hung with pearl tassels. Proud horses were harnessed, springing forward, and the charioteer drove as fast as the wind. Royal regalia, screens, and standards filled the ranks; banners streamed and snapped. Victory drums thundered through the forest, with gongs and trumpets sounding together. The warriors were all bold and fierce, shouting until the earth shook. Dust rose and dark smoke gathered as they drove the troops quickly onward.

When they reached the edge of Cakkrawan mountain, towering high and vast, they saw the splendid ritual hall in the middle of the great bamboo grove. Demon hosts guarded it in three circling rings. The inner ring held asuras stationed at the offering-fires. Intharachit sat with eyes closed, reciting the Veda, dressed as a rishi in the middle of the royal ritual hall upon the splendid jeweled seat. Phra Lak was filled with gladness. His hand took the bright Brahmastra arrow, set it to the string, aimed to destroy, and the younger brother of the four-armed lord released it.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of an age. Cakkrawan mountain shook. It struck the mighty army and destroyed the whole ritual hall.

Then Hanuman, Angkhot the splendid monkey, the eighteen crowned commanders, and the monkey army all displayed power, bold as lion-kings, and drove in to slaughter and fight the demon troops.

Heads, feet, and bodies were cut apart. They died scattered everywhere. The demons ran, split, and fell upon one another in confusion, senseless.
