This is the fifty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Intharachit's last battle with Phra Lak, the Surakan, Agniwat, Brahmastra, Phlai Wat, and cloud-hidden weapon storm, Phiphek's warning about Intharachit's head, Angkhot's journey to Brahma for the celestial tray, Phra Lak's killing of Intharachit, Rama's destruction of the dangerous head, Lanka's mourning, Montho and Suwannakanyuma's laments, Thotsakan's attempt to kill Sida, the counsel that restrains him, Intharachit's cremation on Nilakala mountain, and Thotsakan's next war preparations.

Translation

Intharachit's Last Battle

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line, bow in hand, saw mighty Intharachit lead out the army. The troops spread thick as an ocean, shouting in tumult and showing their courage, making a proud display as if they would rush in and seize victory. He smiled and gave command to all the soldiers, lesser and greater: "Hold your ranks firmly. Watch the asura's power."

Then the son of the ten-faced king stood in his chariot among the army and gave his royal order: "Ho, demon troops. Raise the soldiers and charge bravely. Strike the monkey army and kill them all. If any man shrinks from the enemy, I will end his life and all seven generations of his yaksha line, to satisfy my heart against that vile one."

Then the demon soldiers heard the royal speech. They did not dare enter the fight, for their fear was extreme, like tigers before a lion-king. Yet they feared Intharachit's fierce power and knew no way to turn aside. Forced in heart, they entered the fight; they could not hang back. They leapt, plunged, pierced through, and rushed to pursue and kill the enemy.

They shot, thrust, stabbed, and cut in confusion, tangled with the splendid monkeys. In groups and companies they attacked, some fleeing and some pursuing in battle.

Then the battle-skilled monkey troops pressed and pierced into the close combat, rushing to fight the demon host.

The monkeys chased, seized the yakshas' weapons, and broke them by brave strength. The demons lay dead scattered over the earth, routed and senseless all the way back to the asura's chariot.

Then mighty Intharachit saw his troops broken and dying, out of their wits, and anger burned like fire across the sky. He drew the Surakan arrow, set it on the string, raised and aimed it at Phra Lak the younger prince, and shot it by his demon power.

Its sound was like the roar of burning acid fire. Cakkrawan mountain shook. It struck the monkey troops, and they died scattered across the earth.

Then radiant Phra Lak of the Solar Line saw Intharachit release the demon arrow and strike the monkey host. Heads were cut off, bodies were cut apart, feet were severed, and corpses rolled across the mountain slopes. The younger brother of the four-armed lord took the Brahmastra and released it.

It thundered like waves in the sea, and even the fire of destruction trembled. It struck Intharachit's chariot and shattered it into ash and dust. All the monkey soldiers who had died by the yaksha's arrow returned to life by the younger prince's power. They raised brows, rolled eyes, bared fangs, shouted in a great uproar, sprang forward in strength, and pursued the demon host.

Then Intharachit's brave troops, some in panic, ran away, and some turned back to resist.

They stabbed, cut, struck, and fought in confusion. Some shot arrows from their bows. Both sides fought bravely, locked in close combat.

Then the strong monkey soldiers chased and attacked, grappling with the asuras.

They bit with mouths, kicked with feet, slapped with hands, dodged, glared, and killed. The demon host could not withstand their power; they broke, died, and fled back senseless.

Then mighty Intharachit stood on the earth, his chariot gone. He saw the monkeys pressing in, killing the demon soldiers. In fury he stamped his foot, ground his teeth, and rushed out to fight the forest-monkeys.

He swung left and swept right with the bow. The monkey host could not endure his strength. They broke and fell back in ruin, and no one could withstand his hand.

Then the younger brother of the incarnate lord, skilled in war, saw mighty Intharachit driving the monkeys back. His hand brandished the royal bow as the demon killed. Phra Lak leapt, sprang, and seized the asura by his swift strength.

He set his left foot on the yaksha's knee and snatched away the bow. When Phra Lak struck mighty Intharachit with it, the demon staggered back at once.

Then mighty Intharachit the yaksha, immensely stubborn and enduring, seized an arrow and shot it.

The sound shook and rolled like thunderclaps. It struck the shin of the younger prince with the demon lord's force.

Then brave Phra Lak of the Solar Line was struck by the jeweled Surakan arrow. He burned with pain as if by poisoned flame, but forced his body to stand. Setting his mind on the merit of the great ascetics, he raised his hands above his head and recited the mighty Vishnu spell.

When he had completed seven rounds, he blew over his right shin and rubbed over his whole body. The poison of the asura's arrow vanished. Then he drew the powerful Agniwat arrow, which could shake the earth, set it on the string, drew it swiftly, and released it with force.

It blazed brilliantly with doomsday fire, and its thunder reached Dusit. It went straight and struck Intharachit, lodging in the demon lord's chest.

Then the brave son of the ten-headed king fell to the ground as if his life would end. He held himself up, raised his hands above his head, worshiped radiant Brahma's power, gathered his senses, and recited a mighty spell.

When he had completed the proper round, he blew and rubbed over the yaksha's whole body. The arrow slipped free. His anger burned like flame. He ground his teeth, stamped his feet, and displayed power as if he would overturn the earth. He leapt forward with bodily strength, glaring and aiming to seize Phra Lak.

He planted his left foot firmly on Phra Lak's knee, like Rahu seizing the moon in the wheel of the sky. The younger prince seized the yaksha's bow, and the son of the ten-faced king struck at him.

Then the younger brother of Phra Chakrakrit, fierce in power, fought the asura face to face. The sky-lord broke him by force.

Phra Lak sprang up, stepped on his shoulder, caught his head, twisted him about, and struck Intharachit's body. Blood ran from all the demon's limbs.

Then mighty Intharachit, struck many times by the royal bow, reeled and swayed. He bore the pain, slowly recovered his body, seized a fierce discus, and hurled it with yaksha strength.

The sound was like thunder. The sky boomed and trembled. The discus shone like the sun and whirled around the younger brother of the four-armed lord.

Then the younger prince, skilled in war, saw the discus displaying destructive power. He took the Brahmastra and released it.

The sound thundered through the sky; earth and Cakkrawan mountain shook. It pursued and destroyed the fierce discus, reducing it to dust in the blink of an eye. Then it struck horses, chariots, elephants, the fourfold army, and the yaksha warriors. They died scattered across the earth by the power of the younger brother of Phra Chakri.

Then the son of the ten-faced king had lost his chariot and his full army. He was empty of weapons. The asura was shaken with fear, fearing death above all. "If I remain and continue this battle with the human, I see that on this earth I cannot match his power. I will surely die by his victorious arrow. Yet if I must die, let my name remain and my glory be known hereafter. Do not let the three worlds condemn me until the end of the age." Thinking this, he displayed power; the ten directions thundered and trembled, the sky darkened with thick smoke, and the yaksha flew upward.

When he reached the sky, he hid himself in a great fold of cloud. He worshiped the lord of the three worlds, fixed his heart, and recited his magical knowledge.

When he had completed the thousandfold round, a sound shook and rolled through every direction. A rain of weapons fell and struck the monkey soldiers.

Then the bow-bearing younger brother of Phra Hariwong saw weapons falling from the sky and striking the monkey army. Looking across the battlefield, he could not see Intharachit's body. Puzzled and uncertain, the lord asked the astrologer: "Phiphek, asura, where is Intharachit now? He was fighting and then vanished before my eyes. Weapons fall in a strange way. Our monkey soldiers are wounded in feet and hands as if struck by a discus. What is this, demon lord? Where is the son of Thotsakan?"

Then Phiphek, wise in disposition, heard the younger brother of the three-world lord. He bowed and answered the royal command: "The son of Thotsakan is out of plans. His power is exhausted, and he can no longer meet Your hand. He has fled and hidden in the cloud, reciting demon magic. Therefore these weapons rain down like a storm. Let the younger brother of the lord of armies shoot and undo the demon lord's stratagem."

Then mighty, brave Phra Lak heard every point. The sky-lord released the Phlai Wat arrow.

Its sound was like storming thunder. The earth shook in fear. It shone like the rising sun and went straight to strike the asura's body. All the monkey soldiers who had lost their lives returned to life by the younger brother of Phra Chakri's power.

Then mighty Intharachit was struck by the arrow, which pinned fast in his body. The asura recited a spell.

When he had completed seven rounds and blown, the arrow would not come free from his body. He grew more shaken and desolate, and the yaksha wept for his own life.

"Alas, wasted is the birth I took in Brahma's created line. My famous power blazed like doomsday fire and subdued even the sixteenth heaven. I had wisdom, force, and brilliance; I learned the three Vedas and every spell. Gods and asuras feared my glory, which shone like the sun. Wasted is my mighty strength. Wasted is my training in the bow. I lose my life because my father has gone to ravage and expose the younger prince. From this day the demon city will be troubled everywhere. The Solar Line of Brahma will decline and be lost because the enemies have come to oppress it." As he lamented, the arrow's poison burned him, consuming the demon's heart. He suffered deep pain as if his life would end.

Then radiant Phra Lak, blessed with splendor, watched for his chance to kill Intharachit and end his life. He drew the Brahmastra, set it to the string, beautiful like the supreme Chakrakrit, fixed his royal eyes, and prepared to release it by his power.

Then Phiphek, wise in disposition, saw Phra Lak draw the victorious arrow. He bowed and spoke: "My lord, wait first. Do not yet kill the yaksha. He received a boon from Brahma: if his head falls to the earth when his life ends, it will become blazing fire, burning throughout the whole universe, hot as the doomsday flame. Therefore supreme Brahma gave a shining celestial tray to receive the yaksha's head when his life ends. Let Angkhot the monkey, glorious son of Pali and brother through the asura mother, go bring down that jeweled tray from Brahma. Let it wait to receive the demon's head, and then release the mighty arrow to end the yaksha's life."

Then Phra Lak of the created Solar Line heard the younger brother of Thotsakan and gave command: "Son of Pali, mighty and brave, go to Brahma's heaven and ask the Creator for the tray made of diamond-jewel, to receive the head of Intharachit the yaksha. I will end the asura's life. Hurry back at once."

Then Angkhot, lord of victory, bowed his head, gladly received the order, made obeisance, and flew away.

When he reached supreme Brahma, the monkey bowed his head and paid homage. He reported: "Mighty Intharachit is fighting the younger brother of Phra Chakri. The demon fled into the air, and the lord will release the Brahmastra to kill him. He has sent me up to ask for the splendid celestial tray, to go down and receive Intharachit's head when the powerful lord shoots the arrow, so that it will not fall to the ground. Lord of the earth, show mercy."

Then radiant Thao Thada, Brahma, heard the son of Pali say that the younger brother of Phra Chakri had sent him. With great joy he picked up the jeweled tray and gave it to him: "Hurry, do not delay. Receive the head of the unrighteous asura."

Then mighty Angkhot received the shining celestial tray, bowed in farewell, and flew back.

When he reached the slope of Cakkrawan mountain, he raised the tray and hovered in the sky, waiting to receive the asura's head and keep it from falling to the earth.

Then Phra Lak of the Solar Line, master of the bow, saw Angkhot, grandson of Indra and lord of the monkeys, raising the splendid tray in midair. He drew the bright Brahmastra, set it to the string, aimed to kill, and the younger brother of the four-armed lord released it.

Its sound was like a fierce wind. Even the sixteenth heaven trembled. It struck mighty Intharachit's arms, cutting off left and right by its power. Then the Brahmastra went on to slay the demon lord, cutting off the yaksha's head. His body fell to the earth, and his life ended at once.

Then Angkhot, grandson of Kosi, saw Intharachit's demon head severed from the body and flying away. He brought in Brahma's celestial tray, caught the head, and carried it swiftly down toward the earth.

When he arrived, he presented the yaksha's head to Phra Lak the younger prince, in the midst of the monkey army and all the soldiers.

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak, seeing Angkhot hold the demon's head, was greatly delighted. It was as if he had won the wealth, splendor, attendants, and sovereignty of the three worlds. He looked at the demon lord's head, smiled, and rejoiced.

Now the story turns to the gods and all the celestial women, the deities and guardians of the forest and mountains. When they saw Phra Lak kill Intharachit and end his life, they all rejoiced and leaned out from every opening of their mansions. They scattered divine flowers and garlands, golden blossoms of sweet fragrance, so thickly over Cakkrawan mountain that they covered the ground. They clapped their hands in delight; some plucked strings, bowed instruments, beat drums, blew pipes, and sang clear songs. They praised and blessed him until the whole heaven roared.

Then Phra Lak, lord of the Solar Line, having completed the killing of the asura while the gods scattered divine flowers, was filled with joy. He said to Phiphek the yaksha: "Intharachit's head has destructive power. We must take it and present it to bow-bearing Phra Narai." Speaking so, he walked back and mounted the victory-chariot.

He ordered the warrior army to withdraw from the great Cakkrawan mountain. The shouting thundered through the three worlds as they returned to the golden pavilion.

When he reached the shining golden landing-place beneath the sky, he descended from the jeweled chariot and came to attend the four-armed lord.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of his elder brother of the Solar Line, reported everything that had happened in battle, and presented the asura's head to the lord of the earth.

Then the blessed, radiant incarnate lord listened to his younger brother and rejoiced. The king looked over and saw Intharachit's demon head baring its fangs, rolling its eyes, and raising its brows as if it still had living mind. The lord gave command: "Do you see, dear brother? Even after its life has ended, the yaksha's head has not left its savage nature. It still displays courage and deformity. If another had fought him, no one in all three worlds could have withstood him. Because it was my beloved younger brother, this demon lord has been killed."

Then Sukhrip, Hanuman the great warrior, the eighteen crowned monkey chiefs, and wise Phiphek all bowed their heads and reported to the king, crest of the world. They recounted the battle from the beginning: how the asura fought continuously, how each arrow Intharachit released had power surpassing heaven, how many shifting devices he used, and how Phra Lak surpassed all men. He shot again and again in the confusion, undoing many demon devices, until the asura king's life ended and Narai's younger brother outshone the world.

Then Phra Ram, jewel of the discus, heard and spoke: "That asura Intharachit was wicked and coarse. He harmed gods and great ascetics and troubled every direction with his deluded, blind heart." Then he turned and asked the wise astrologer Phiphek: "What should be done with the demon lord Intharachit's head?"

Then Phiphek, wise in disposition, heard the lord of the three worlds and bowed to answer: "Let Angkhot, grandson of Kosi, take Intharachit's head and hold it in the middle of the clouds. Then let the sky-lord release an arrow against it, shattering it into ash and dust by the power of the royal shaft, so that the world may remain secure. Lord of the earth, show favor."

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds heard Phiphek the asura and gave command: "Grandson of Maghavan, you are a great warrior. Take Intharachit's head and hold it up in the clouded sky."

Then brave, mighty Angkhot bowed his head to receive the royal command and carried the asura's head, flying upward.

He hovered in the air like a bold Garuda-king. In one hand he raised the demon lord's head, offering it before the powerful incarnate lord.

Then Phra Harirak, Chakrakrit, saw Angkhot holding up Intharachit's head. The powerful lord stepped forward.

He drew the Brahmastra and set it to the string. His eyes aimed at the yaksha's head. Drawing with mighty strength, the king released it.

All the sixteen heavens thundered; Cakkrawan mountain shook. The arrow struck mighty Intharachit's head, destroying it into doomsday ash and dust. When this was finished, the lord walked back in beauty like a god's creation. As the sun's bright light ended, the righteous king returned into the pavilion.

Lanka Receives the News

Then the surviving demon troops, who had hidden themselves in the edge of the forest, saw Intharachit destroyed. Shocked, pale, and trembling, they ran breathlessly and hurried into the city.

When they reached the lotus feet, they reported to the yaksha king: "Your royal son went to fight the enemy. The fourfold army of warriors has fallen and died without remainder. Now Your son has lost his life by the powerful human's sacred arrow."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard that his royal son had died. He was startled, and his face turned pale at once. He could hardly hold his body upright. It was as if his own life would end, and he wept for his beloved son.

[O]

"Alas, Intharachit, child of your father, famous through the three worlds. You were greatest in the Solar Line of yakshas; how did you lose to hostile enemies? Wasted is your birth in Brahma's line, your knowledge of sacred arrows and spells. Your power subdued every direction; how did you lose to earth-walking humans? Shame has come before all the three worlds. Now enemy kings will despise us and rise arrogantly. Alas, losing my younger brother was not enough; now I have lost my beloved son. Who will take the place of my heart and eyes?" So the asura lamented in grief.

Then he thought of his son's body, and the demon's heart sank deeper. Forcing himself to recover sense, he gave royal command: "Mahothon, general, prepare the troops and warriors, and also the splendid jeweled chariot. I will go to Cakkrawan mountain."

Then Mahothon the demon bowed his head to receive the royal command, made obeisance, and went out.

He arranged horses, chariots, elephants, and the fourfold warriors to left and right. Some groups brushed tears from their faces, for their kin had died. Other demons who had heard the news, faces pale and hearts shaken, ran in confusion and joined the army in great numbers. Commoners and officers waited for the asura king to depart.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line, when the soldiers were ready, went forth and mounted the chariot.

He ordered the army to move. Lothan waved the signal flag, and the king went in power and royal glory straight toward Cakkrawan mountain.

When he reached the battlefield, he saw the bodies of asura warriors dead across the ground, and the demon king's heart withered. He looked over the enemy troops and did not see one dead monkey. His grief and attachment became even greater, and he drove the chariot about searching for his son.

Looking toward the mountain slope, he saw the body of his beloved son, a headless body lying desolate. At once he descended from the chariot.

Out of love he ran to it, lifted the body into his lap, lost all steadiness of heart, and lamented in grief.

"One mouth says: O my child, I never thought you would die. You bore divine weapons like doomsday fire and understood every kind of skill.

"The second says: O light of my eyes, your fame and power shook the earth. You were expert in victory and subdued even the heavens.

"The third says: O beloved one, I grieve for you. You shared my life, my joy, and my suffering at every time; you were your father's heart and eyes.

"The fourth says: O lord of the world, supreme in wisdom and battle-skill, how could you lose your destructive power to an ordinary two-armed human?

"The fifth says: When you released the Nagabas arrow to kill, it bound the hostile enemy and left them dead across the ground.

"The sixth says: Dearest beloved, when you loosed the Brahmastra, it struck enemy kings and destroyed them all by its power.

"The seventh says: When the war was done, I hoped to consecrate my jewel-child to rule the wealth and sovereignty of victorious Lanka.

"The eighth says: Alas, wasted grief. You died because Phiphek the yaksha revealed the enemy's inner matter to them, and so you were outmatched in war.

"The ninth says: You have been ruined, head cut off, body rolling in the field. This is unworthy of the named Solar Line, like a low and common man.

"The ten mouths say: Alas, why remain here? Come, let us go to the palace and the inner chambers, to seek your noble mother." Lamenting, the demon lord grieved.

Then the demon soldiers saw the bodies of kin, friends, and fathers dead throughout the forest, heads cut off, feet cut off, bodies cut apart, a pitiful sight beyond endurance. Each person grieved and wept until the whole asura army was in uproar. Their faces were darkened by tears, their sorrow and crying filled the air, and the sound shook Cakkrawan mountain. It was like a doomsday wind blowing through a rang forest and breaking every tree. Some demons mourned the royal son; every yaksha company was stricken.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line slowly recovered from grief. The yaksha lifted the beloved son's body and placed it on the royal chariot's throne, fitting for a great king. He ordered the demon army to move and turned back toward Lanka.

When they reached the palace, the demon king halted the chariot. He lifted the body of his royal son and carried it up into the shining great palace.

Then lovely Montho, queen among demon women, and Suwannakanyuma, the daughter-in-law queen, were in the inner residence. They heard that Intharachit had gone to battle, could not withstand the human, and had reached the heavenly state on Cakkrawan mountain; that his royal father had gone to receive the body and had now brought it to the royal palace. The two lovely women, together with their attendants, hurried out.

When they arrived, they collapsed into sitting and looked over the yaksha's whole body. They saw that his head was cut from his body and that his left and right arms were gone. Startled, pale, and terrified, they cried out loudly. His royal mother embraced the body and lamented.

"Alas, Intharachit, beloved son, dear light of your mother's eyes. I bore you in my womb, nourished and raised you, and allowed nothing to trouble you, until you grew to manhood, learned the arts and arrows, and became famous for power. Your mother rejoiced, hoping you would become the crest of the city, crown of the asura-yakshas. How could you lose your life? It is pitiful for me to see. Your head and arms are gone from your body, like a deformed man. I grieve for the line of four-faced Brahma; its glory will decline, and all Lanka will be lost. Alas, from the time I look and no longer see you, it will be like the moon sinking out of sight behind a mountain. I will think of you at every time and eat only tears forever. When I bathe, I will bathe only in the water of my eyes." Lamenting in deep grief, the lovely one lost consciousness.

Then beautiful Suwannakanyuma embraced her royal husband's feet and wept in grief.

"Alas, lord above my head, what karma has struck us? How could you die and flee from this servant to the city of heaven? I pity the two princes of the Solar Line, your only sons. They are still young children. How can they be fatherless? From this day there will be suffering and none of the happiness of before. There will be grief, anxiety, burning, and pain. Mother and children will tell their grief to one another, weeping and longing every night and day. O my heart, how pitiable it is. Wasted is the birth I took as a woman. To be a widow without a husband is like being headless, a thing the yakshas will despise." Lamenting so, the queen grieved as if her life would end.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line saw Montho and Suwannakanyuma grieve until they fell silent. He became more desolate and weak and could no longer hold his body upright. He lowered his face in grief, senseless and lost.

Then the young palace attendants saw the three royals grieving and all lying still together. The elder women and nurse-mothers were startled, confused, and spiritless. Their grief thundered throughout the whole palace like the fire of death spreading and burning. The inner women fell scattered over the palace floor as if their lives had ended.

All the royal women came in and massaged the three noble ones. Some sprinkled perfumed water, and all three returned to consciousness.

Then lovely Montho slowly recovered body and mind. She lifted up her grief and lamented: "Alas, Intharachit, child of your mother, you should not have died. Shame has come before the gods, ascetics, Garudas, and nagas. All this is because your royal father made light of the cause and listened to Sammanakkha. Deluded by Lady Sida, he brought her here into the city. Therefore war arose, and burning distress came like fire. I warned him from the beginning, but the king did not believe my words. He was lost in love for the beautiful woman and changed my speech, saying I was jealous. Now the jewel of my eyes is lost, and the demon king gives it no thought. Then Thotsakan the yaksha, Raphanasura, heard the woman's lament. It hurt as if a trident stabbed his heart. His attachment to his son overwhelmed his love for Lady Sida, and the asura's anger blazed like fire. He seized the royal sword and went out.

At the landing he spoke, ordering the demon ministers: "I am going to the flower garden to kill that foul Sida."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha saw the king enraged like fire and about to go kill the lovely woman. He was alarmed, fearing Phra Ram, bearer of the discus. "That lord is immensely powerful. This time he will surely take the demon city. What woman would we then offer at the feet of the radiant lord of the three worlds? We will all die, and the asura race in Lanka will be ended." Thinking this, he raised his hands and bowed: "Great king, be gracious. Your Majesty is wise; killing Sida is wrong. Even if the lady dies, the royal son will not return. The three worlds will mock and despise us, saying we have lost to the enemy: not thinking to avenge one another, but killing an innocent woman. Mighty lord, pause and consider well. Lady Sida, young and beautiful, is the finest of women, with no other to equal her. Even the celestial women of the six heavens are far from matching her form. She is fit to be kept as the talisman of the demon city."

Then the brave ten-headed lord of the Solar Line listened to wise Paowanasura praise beautiful Sida. Love spread through every pore, and desire clouded him. His anger faded and passed away. The royal sword slipped from the demon king's hand without his knowing it, and he walked back to the shining palace.

When he arrived, he ordered the demon ministers: "Place the body of my beloved son, who shared my life, in a splendid jeweled urn. Take it to the mountain peak named Nilakala. I and the chief queens will go there to cremate my son."

Then Mahothon the demon bowed his head to receive the royal order. He brought in the shining jeweled urn, invited the body of the royal son of the lord of the world into it with fragrant sandal-powder according to the asura's command, then lifted it onto the victory-chariot bright with radiance. With music sounding, he led it to the mountain.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line, Lady Montho, and young Suwannakanyuma, the three royal ones, went down from the shining palace. The concubines and attendants followed the demon lord out.

When he reached the splendid palace, vast like Tavatimsa, he sat upon the ornate jeweled throne in the midst of the great army. He gave a lion-voiced order to the chief ministers: "Prepare the fourfold army completely. I will go fight the enemy."

He levied ten lords as the vanguard, ten divisions brave and strong. The selected warriors were all fierce in battle, holding bows strung with poisoned arrows. The companies of princely sons, ten chariots, were appointed to carry the royal warrant; each was strong in power and rode a radiant ornate chariot. Elephant-lords bound victorious-tusked elephants, fierce and brave in war. Horse-lords harnessed coursers whose feet were swift as wind. Chariot-lords yoked lion-drawn cars, with charioteers standing firm and holding halberds. Brave soldiers bore clubs, throwing-spears, shields, and swords, brandishing them in glittering ranks. They also yoked the royal battle-chariot with its deeply curved, radiant yoke. The troops were set in ordered lines, commoners and commanders waiting for the asura king.
