Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sahamaliwan's appeal to Latsatian against Kala Naga, Kala Naga's defeat and the gift of Nang Akki, Latsatian's transfer of Lanka to Thotsakan, Wirunhok's damage to Mount Kailasa, Thotsakan's lifting of Kailasa, and Phra Narai's trick by which Uma is returned and Montho is sent to Lanka.

Translation

Sahamaliwan Calls Latsatian Against Kala Naga

Then Thao Sahamaliwan the yaksha heard the news and his breast burned. He considered the battle: "By nature the naga people fear the suparna bird above all. Even if we go out to oppose their fierce power, we will all die together. Thao Chaturaphak, lord of yakshas, has died. His son Latsatian now rules the territory of Lanka. My beloved grandson is glorious in the science of the bow; every direction trembles and fears his power. I will send for him to come and destroy the enemy king."

Having thought this, he gave command for yaksha soldiers to be arranged around the city and to keep every post firm. He had the scribe compose a letter for a minister and ordered him to hurry to great Lanka, invite the royal grandson to come, and kill the enemy host completely.

Then the diligent chief scribe received the kumbhanda king's command and hurried to write the letter. When it was finished, he placed it in a jeweled golden box and handed it to the yaksha, saying, "Go quickly up to Lanka and offer it to the asura king."

Then Mahakai the yaksha received the letter, displayed his power, and split the earth to go upward.

Then the two great ministers levied all the forces and brought them up to guard the ramparts. At gates, fighting towers, forts, and camps, brave warriors were stationed in lines. Cannon were set at every gate, and the gate captains were ordered to inspect their posts carefully.

Then brave Phaya Kala Naga, once he had finished breaking the asura outpost, hurried his warriors inward.

When he reached the dwelling-place of the demon city, he halted all the soldiers great and small and ordered his trusted ministers to march in and surround the city.

Then the four naga generals received the command, offered joined hands, and marched according to the royal word.

Each division set itself firmly. They surrounded the city on every side in three rings, inspecting the whole army and tightening the order. Their shout shook everything in tumult.

Then Mahakai the yaksha reached victorious Lanka. He entered the council hall, bowed silently with joined hands before the great ministers, and informed them: "Danger has arisen in the underworld. The king has given me a letter to carry."

Then the chief ministers of left and right learned the envoy's words and went together to the royal hall.

When they reached Thao Latsatian, lordly and splendid, they bowed at the lotus feet and said: "Sahamaliwan, who rules the territory of the underworld, has sent Mahakai the asura up to present a royal letter beneath your lotus feet." Then they read it before the asura king.

"Royal letter of the line of Brahma, crown of the glorious underworld city, your ruling grandfather named Sahamaliwan, sending auspicious blessing in writing to the beloved royal grandson. Now fierce and able serpents have marched with their armies to attack. Among the solar line in the underworld there is no one skilled and brave enough in war to go out, fight, cut, and face the enemy bands. I invite my royal grandson, jewel of my eye, glorious in bow-power and fierce skill, to march with your mighty troops and help save your grandfather's life. Let peace and safety be firm. Cool the burning of our lineage. Let the whole border of the realm be cooled, and the people rejoice."

Then Thao Latsatian the yaksha learned the letter and burned like fire. The asura gnashed his teeth and stamped his foot, giving royal command: "Hey, diligent demon ministers, levy the asuras and kumbhandas. I will go fight the enemy."

Then the two yaksha ministers received the earth-ruling lord's command, offered joined hands, and went out.

They arranged the soldiers, great-bodied and tall, skilled in victory, all harsh-hearted and dark in spirit. They were brave, enduring, and firm. They could transform their bodies and vanish from sight, fly through the air, walk on water, and dive through earth; even Indra and Brahma feared their power. In their hands they grasped every kind of weapon, brandishing them in fierce confusion. They prepared the jeweled chariot shining like the sky and waited to receive the asura king.

Then Thao Latsatian the yaksha, when golden light shone over sky and earth, came to the place of bathing.

He had the jeweled golden-lotus pipes opened, so that water sprayed like fine rain. He bathed in fragrant water mixed with flower pollen. He put on raised-bordered trousers and cloth with mirror panels and curling vine designs. His side panels were adorned with swan-ornament; his hanging sash shone brightly. His upper garment was a purple riding robe. Directional plates, breast ornaments, and three crossing diamond chains were worn together. Golden armlets coiled like nagas around his arms. Emerald rings in Garuda-egg settings flashed. He wore a great radiant crown, flowers, earrings, and ear ornaments, then took up the bow of destructive power and mounted the chariot.

At the auspicious time, he ordered the fourfold army to move. Gongs sounded and flags waved as the signal. The shout thundered until it reached the sixteenth heaven; the clouds cleared and the sun shone bright.

The royal chariot was large and high, with seven graceful crests. Its yoke and pole were chased with gold; its jeweled hubs were cut and set together. Its raised throne floated in lovely curves, with emerald fretwork and rubies between. Garudas gripped nagas and hung firm, while divine figures knelt with joined hands in tiers. Two thousand savage tigers drew it, bold as lion-kings. The charioteer held a spear and drove swiftly as wind. Regalia, screens, sunshades, flywhisks, and parasols stood in alternating rows. Kettledrums and drums crowded the procession. The warriors shouted in dense uproar, waving weapons in battle-fury. The earth resounded in deep layers as they hurried and competed forward.

When he reached the underworld city and saw the nagas firmly surrounding it, he was furious, gnashed his teeth, and drove his army in to attack.

Then Thao Sahamaliwan the yaksha saw the Lanka army enter battle. He ordered his royal son: "Child of my life, hurry out with your brave forces. Slay and destroy the naga host, striking beside the army from Lanka."

Then Maha Yom Yak received the command and marched with his soldiers, attacking from the other side.

The soldiers of the two cities chased into the melee and slaughtered one another. They shot, thrust, stabbed, and cut in tumult, while the warriors shouted until the underworld shook.

Then the brave naga troops, seeing the yakshas attacking them on both sides, went out to fight and resist. Weapons stabbed, cut, flew, and were thrown; each side warded and parried without retreating. Each side was brave and fierce in combat, and the nagas breathed poison into smoke.

Then the strong yaksha warriors brandished their weapons, gnashed their teeth, and charged in with heavy force. Group by group and rank by rank they cut, stabbed, shot, and killed. The naga troops lay dead everywhere by the power and strength of the asuras.

Latsatian Defeats Kala Naga

Then radiant Phaya Kala Naga saw his troops losing their lives and grew angry like fire consuming the sky. His body changed back into a naga king, seven-headed, bold and brave. His eyes reddened like the sun's light, and he came straight before the demon king's chariot.

Then brave-hearted Thao Latsatian saw the arrogant serpent displaying power and rushing in to attack. He drew the Vishnu-Veda arrow, bright in might and able to subdue every company. Laying it to the string and aiming to destroy the naga, the asura shot it with his power.

The shining arrow showed its power and became the royal Garuda bird, as large as great Brahma. It beat its wings and flew in. It swooped down upon the head of the naga king, opened its mouth, seized him by the neck, caught and gathered him with feet and hands, and brought him to be offered to the asura king.

Then radiant Phaya Kala Naga, when the Garuda-arrow seized and dragged his body, suffered as if his life would end. Trapped and fearing death, he did not think of shame or disgrace. He cried out, begging for his life in distress: "May Your Majesty show mercy."

Then Thao Latsatian the yaksha heard the naga king and felt compassion. The asura ordered the Garuda to set the serpent down before the yaksha's chariot. It obeyed the word as if it had a mind.

Then the wise naga king rejoiced at gaining his life. Love and gratitude for the demon king arose in him. He changed form into a small human shape, graceful and pleading. All pride and arrogance were gone. He crawled in and bowed, saying: "This time my life had reached its end. Your Majesty granted me life; that kindness is beyond measure. I have nothing with which to repay your feet, lord and refuge. I ask to offer my royal daughter beneath Your Majesty's feet."

Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of the yaksha king, dismissed his great army, and returned to the naga city.

Then Maha Yom Yak the yaksha, when the naga war was finished, rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. He went in to attend Thao Latsatian, bowed his head at the lotus feet, and invited the honored king to enter the moon-palace.

Then Thao Latsatian, lordly and splendid, raised his kumbhanda forces and they followed him into the city.

When he reached the jeweled alighting platform, shining in splendor, he descended from the adorned royal chariot and went up to attend the asura king.

Then Thao Sahamaliwan the yaksha came down from the jeweled throne to receive his royal grandson.

He led his beloved grandson by the hand, brought him up to sit together on the yaksha king's seat, and spoke sweetly: "You came to help in battle; the enemy has been shattered. Your kindness cannot be counted. Without you, this great underworld city would have fallen under the power of the nagas."

Then Thao Latsatian the yaksha bowed his head with joined hands and answered: "This grandson did not know that such a great enemy-thorn had arisen in the underworld. Only when Your Majesty, lord who sustains the three worlds, sent word did I come with the army. I hoped to serve beneath the feet of the Brahma-line lord. I did not rest the troops for even a moment. Even if life had been lost, I would have felt no regret."

Then Thao Sahamaliwan, skilled in war, heard the words of his mighty grandson. The lord of the earth rejoiced. He bestowed rings, necklaces, a divine jeweled crown, and rewards throughout the ranks of the army.

Then Latsatian, born of Brahma's line, received the gifts and rewards, and the kumbhanda rejoiced. When this was finished, he bowed farewell at the feet of the supreme lord, dismissed the asura troops, and returned to Lanka city.

Nang Akki Is Given to Thotsakan

Then the radiant serpent king returned to his city and went up into the splendid jeweled palace.

He entered the golden sleeping chamber, reclined on the couch, laid his arm across his face in sorrow, and sighed. Then he told his queen, beloved above all: "This time we marched the army and lost the contest to the asura. Latsatian captured me and spared my life. Thinking of the yaksha's kindness, I offered our royal daughter, jewel of our eyes. I am faint with grief and sadness."

Then Nang Prapha, beloved above all, heard him and answered: "Lord of the earth, do not grieve. Latsatian is of the Brahma line, famous in power through every rank of heaven. How could our honor be lost? It is well; we will have the asura as a refuge."

Then Phaya Kala Naga heard his chief queen. Since she did not oppose his command, his thought was fulfilled. He called his royal daughter, lovely-faced and formed like a woman of Tusita, and had her sit near him. The mighty king instructed the young woman: "You will go to live with your husband. Jewel of my eye, remember your father's teaching. Be modest and restrained; do not be willful. Entrust yourself well to the lord of the earth."

After instructing her, he had her bathed and purified. She put on radiant nine-jeweled ornaments and went to the jeweled platform, with the palace women following.

Her royal father mounted the royal chariot, beautiful in honor, rank, and splendor. His daughter rode in a palanquin, lovely as a heavenly woman. With the naga women and warriors filling the ground until it trembled, they left the great underworld city and went by the road.

The jeweled chariot was bright and shining, blazing like the moon. Regalia stood thickly in alternating rows. Pipes, drums, and gongs answered one another with pleasant, thunderous sound. Soldiers crowded in dense ranks and shouted until the underworld echoed. They split the sea and rose through the earth, urged the naga troops onward, and floated swiftly through the sky, aiming for the continent of Lanka.

When they arrived, he halted the forces, descended from the chariot, and brought the royal daughter up to attend the kumbhanda king.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet and said to the supreme ruler: "I ask to offer my beautiful daughter. Righteous lord, please be gracious."

Then Thao Latsatian the yaksha looked at the form of Nang Akki. Her body was lovely and delighted the eye: noble in rank, beauty, and form, like a divine drawing. Her whole body was slender and graceful, and her face shone clear as the moon. She was fit to be queen of the ten-faced one, to join him in love and delight. She was greater than the palace women, like gold beside jewels.

He gave a beautiful command: "Look, radiant naga king. You have given your royal daughter, and we are very pleased. I will have her share the chamber of Thotsakan, who will rule the territory of the kingdom, continue the solar line and yaksha lineage, and be the pillar of great Lanka."

Then the wise naga king bowed his head and answered: "It is entirely as the lord of the earth shows mercy. As for me, I will take leave at the feet of the Brahma-line lord." Having spoken, he dismissed his army and went to the underworld city.

Latsatian Divides His Kingdom and Dies

[Slow]

Then brave-hearted Thao Latsatian, after enjoying royal fortune for a long time, became very old. Thinking of death ahead as if he were lying between wheels, he made his beloved son Thotsakan the crown of Lanka city. Nang Akki, foremost woman, he made chief queen, greater than the eighty-four thousand women of the inner palace.

Then he gave the Pushpaka palace-car to Kuperan the yaksha and sent him to live at Kalachak city, on the ridge of the Himmaphan forest. Tapnasun, demon lord, ruled the city of Chakrawan. Dhada ruled the city of Watkan. Maran ruled Solot city. Romakan he gave to Khon, envoy and ruler over the outlying lands. Tri Sian, his son, enjoyed the rank of ruler of Matchawari. The youngest daughter, Nang Sammanakkha, he gave in marriage to Chiwaha the yaksha. Phiphek and mighty Kumbhakan he had remain with their elder brother in Lanka.

The king distributed royal wealth, treasure, retinues, and attendants among all his sons and daughters in proper order. He ruled for sixty thousand years without greed or delusion. Then the king of death came for him, and the kumbhanda's life ended.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line inherited divine royal wealth and became a great support, excellent and mighty. When his royal father had gone to heaven, his name and fame shook the earth. The gods and divine guardians were made to serve him by fixed duty.

The king had seven beloved friends, all powerful and brave in majesty. They were named Atchakan the demon, Phaichitra the asura, Thao Satthasun, Phaya Munphalam the yaksha, mighty Chakkrawat Satlung, and powerful Mahaban. Each held a great royal seat, splendid as the heaven of the Thirty-Three. They went back and forth to visit one another regularly, and the asuras lived in lasting happiness.

Wirunhok Throws the Naga Necklace

Now the tale will speak of Wirunhok, skilled in war. He lived beneath the earth between the mountains of Trikut. His city was called Badan. Its jeweled divine palaces were splendid and joyful as the sixteenth heaven, filled with tenfold asura armies. The demon king used to go up to attend the radiant crown of Kailasa, bowing with joined hands seven times each year.

When the appointed time came to attend the lord of the three worlds, he came down from his shining jeweled throne and entered the place of bathing.

He washed and bathed his body in pleasure, put on sweet divine perfume, wore splendid trousers and cloth patterned with curling vines. The tips of the hanging sashes fluttered; nine-jeweled side panels shone. Then he took fierce naga kings as a necklace, their coils winding together. Their gathered heads became a breast ornament, with red naga eyes blazing like light. Serpents became armlets around his arms; all his bracelets were nagas. On all ten fingers he wore nagas as rings. Then he put on the bright jeweled crown, brandished the trident in his right hand, and descended from the victorious palace.

He left the underworld city, displayed power until the earth shook, pierced through earth and ocean, and flew upward by his might.

When he reached radiant Kailasa, shining like Tusita heaven, Phra Isuaro Moli happened to be in his sleeping place. The demon king climbed the staircase, assuming that the supreme lord had come out to meet the asuras and gods in the portico of the great victorious palace. He bowed his head and folded his hands at every step of the stairway without omitting one, crouching and bowing upward without looking at the lord of wisdom.

Then brave Saraphu, who had long lived on the peak of the mountain, saw the demon lord walking and bowing to the stairs. It cried "tuk-kae" and looked at him, lifting its head to mock him. Each time the asura bowed down, it cried sharply down again.

Then Wirunhok the yaksha saw Saraphu mocking him with arrogance. The asura grew angry like burning fire. He looked and did not see Phra Suli on the radiant nine-jeweled seat. So he took off his splendid naga necklace and hurled it with the demon lord's power.

It struck Mount Kailasa, which thundered and sank. Saraphu's life ended. Without attending the lord of wisdom, Wirunhok returned to the underworld city.

[Lament]

Then Phra Suli, lord of the three worlds, sleeping on the splendid divine couch, woke at once. He heard a roaring sound resounding through every rank of heaven. He came down from the jeweled couch and went out to the front portico of the palace.

He saw great Mount Kailasa sunk, shifted, and leaning toward the northeast. Wonder rose in his spirit: "Why has this happened?" Looking with wisdom, he knew that Wirunhok the yaksha had hurled a naga at Saraphu, struck the mountain, and made it sink. He said, "Who will be bold enough to lift great Kailasa back up? I will reward him fully according to the merit of the deed."

Then the gods of every place heard the divine words. They bowed and said to Phra Isara: "If Kailasa is to be lifted, all of us your servants will undertake it." Having spoken, they bowed farewell, came out, and displayed their great power.

All the gods and divine guardians came to lift and push the great mountain. Some carried, some drove it forward, and all were in confusion. They shouted until the whole earth trembled.

When the gods had spent all their power and strength, the mountain had not moved from its place. They bowed and told Phra Suli, "We have used up our bodily strength."

Then Phra Isuan, supreme lord, sat silent and reflected: "Latsatian's son, the kumbhanda with ten heads, ten faces, and twenty arms, has fierce and strong power. His name is Thotsakan. It seems he will be able to lift it by his might." Having thought this, he ordered Chitubot: "Go find the ten-faced yaksha in victorious Lanka and have him hurry up here today."

Then Chitubot, skilled in victory, received the divine king's words, bowed his head in reverence, and flew away.

He hovered in the air before the great throne window and called out: "The lord of the three worlds has commanded and sent me here to find you, king of Lanka, brave and wise demon lord. Go up to attend beneath his feet at great Mount Kailasa."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king came out among his ministers in the jeweled audience hall. Learning that Phra Swayambhu, lord of wisdom, had sent a divine command for him, he adorned himself, took his bow, and flew through the sky.

When he reached the golden palace at the summit of Mount Kailasa, he crawled in to attend the lord of the earth amid the companies of gods.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme creator, glanced and saw Thotsakan. He gave command: "Wirunhok has made the mountain sink. The gods have lifted and pulled but cannot raise it. Therefore I have called you, mighty one, hoping you will help lift the mountain."

Then Thotsakan of the radiant Brahma line bowed his head and answered: "All this shall not trouble your feet. Even if my life is lost, I will not refuse this service." Having spoken, he bowed farewell, came out, and transformed his body.

He became as vast as supreme Brahma, towering above splendid Mount Meru. His feet pressed upon the stone earth, and the asura braced himself to carry it. His twenty hands grasped the corners of the mountain, and his feet thrust with strong force. The sound shook Himmaphan, and the mountain stood straight again.

Then all the gods saw the power of Thotsakan the asura. They were frightened; their hearts flew from them. "Alas, this time all of us will become servants of the yaksha." The sages, vidyadharas, and nagas turned their faces together and shared their distress.

Then Thotsakan of the splendid Brahma line was merry and delighted in his kumbhanda heart. He came and bowed before Phra Suli.

Arrogance swelled in him, and his power grew proud. He did not think of the rank proper to a yaksha. His greed multiplied beyond measure. The asura said to the lord of the world: "I am lord over the yaksha host, but I have no beloved chief queen. I ask you to grant Phra Uma. Lord who passes over the sky, please show mercy."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard the asura's speech. The lord reflected: "Shame! This Thotsakan is no small thing. Deluded and proud in mind, he dares to ask for the mother of the powerful gods, thinking beyond his station. But I have already spoken aloud. I must give her to the yaksha. Even if he takes her, she will likely return; no real harm will come."

Having thought this, he gave a divine command in answer: "The goddess you desire, I will not refuse, kumbhanda."

Then Thotsakan of the splendid Brahma line rejoiced and bowed his head. The kumbhanda crawled in to lift the divine mother, but his body became burning hot as if scorched by fire. He therefore scooped up the lovely goddess by the feet, set her on his head, and flew away by his power.

The radiance of Phra Uma's body was hot, hotter than the sun's rays. Unable to endure or restrain it, the asura carried the goddess on foot.

Narai Sends Uma Back and Montho to Lanka

Then the gods great and small saw that the lord of the three worlds had given the goddess to the asura. They were shaken and lost their courage. Every god went to attend powerful Phra Narai at the great milky ocean.

When they arrived, they told him beneath his feet: "The crown of great Kailasa has given Phra Uma Devi to the ill-omened Thotsakan. All the hosts of gods burn with distress throughout heaven. Each one grieves. Righteous lord, please show mercy."

Then Phra Narai, lord and refuge, learned the gods' words and gave command: "The lovely Phra Uma, whom the lord of the world gave to unlucky Thotsakan, will not truly come to harm. He will bring the chief queen back to her dwelling on Mount Kailasa." Having spoken, he displayed power and flew from the place of the circling sea.

When he reached the beginning of the road to Lanka, he came down at the edge of the forest. There he devised a trick and, by reciting mantra, transformed his body.

By the power of his skilled Veda, he became a yaksha, old and ill-omened in appearance, acting like a fool. He took a hoe, dug in the earth, and stood planting a tree with the top set down into the ground and the roots turned upward into the sky.

When this was finished, he loosened the soil and watered it, acting pleased and merry while he waited to see the twenty-armed king, intending to deceive the asura.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line brought Phra Uma Devi along the road. Seeing the kumbhanda planting a tree, he did not know it was lord Narai. He came near and said: "Old man, you are exceedingly foolish. Who plants a tree with its crown downward? Looking at this, I am troubled and doubtful. Such a thing is unnatural in all three worlds. How could it ever bear fruit?"

Then Phra Narai, in yaksha form, heard the asura's words. He smiled and said mockingly: "You yourself are foolish and ignorant, yet you turn to criticize me. I could clap my hands and laugh enough to satisfy myself, because you do not understand your own body."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard the old demon speak. The asura was deeply doubtful and thought: "Why does this old man speak with such proud rank, not fearing me, one of Chaturaphak's line?" Having thought this, the demon lord asked: "You say I am foolish and ignorant. What fault do you see in me? Tell me quickly and clearly, or your life will end."

Then radiant Phra Narai smiled and spoke: "Asura, you do not understand the matter. I am old and wish to gain merit, so do not forget my kindness when I tell you. You are not satisfied with the good women already with you, and have taken some unlucky woman. Her marks are those of Death himself. She will destroy the yaksha lineage, and all of Lanka will be lost. You close your eyes and do not know good from evil."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard the old demon's words. Suspicion entered his heart: "This woman may be truly as he says, for my body is burning like fire." Having thought this, he called out and asked: "Which woman do you say is good? Have pity and tell me, demon lord. I will go back and exchange this beautiful woman. Then Phra Narai, in yaksha form, answered swiftly by wisdom: "There is one woman of beautiful marks. She is named Montho Devi, more lovely than women in heaven. Her face shines like the moon, and in every way she is fit to increase love."

Then mighty Thotsakan heard the old demon's words. He smiled with delight, lifted the chief goddess's lotus feet onto his head, and at once flew through the sky to Mount Kailasa.

When he arrived, he set the goddess down and told Phra Isuan: "As for exalted Phra Uma, I return her and offer her back. I ask you to grant Montho Devi, to be my beloved companion. Lord who sustains the three worlds, please favor your servant."

Then the crown of the Kailasa royal seat smiled and gave a divine command: "This lovely Uma, whose beauty belongs to the mother of the gods, is not fit for a yaksha's fortune. As for your request for Montho Devi, let it be according to your own desire."

Having spoken, he gave divine command and called young Montho to be given to him. "Take this woman down and raise her as the glory of Lanka."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw the form of lovely Montho, whom no woman in heaven could equal. Her body, form, and softness were all beautiful; her lovely face had every mark of grace. The asura's passion nearly broke his mind. The more he looked, the more his eyes clung to her. He bowed farewell to Phra Suli, lifted the goddess in his arms, and flew away.

Along the way he praised and caressed the younger woman, holding her close and kissing his beloved. By his fierce power he pierced mist and cloud and passed victorious Khitkhin city.
