Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixtieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sahatsadecha and Mulpalam leaving Pangtan with their armies and palace women, their arrival in Lanka, Thotsakan's welcome and feast, Sahatsadecha's promise to kill Rama and Lakshmana with his sacred mace, the combined march of the Pangtan and Lanka forces, the lightning omen that sends Thotsakan back to Lanka, Phiphek's identification of Sahatsadecha and Mulpalam, Rama's decision to face them himself, and the monkey army's first panic at Sahatsadecha's thousand faces and two thousand arms.

Sahatsadecha Comes to Lanka

Then King Sahatsadecha the yaksha, when he had finished commanding the great general, went into the inner quarters.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, with lovely women, lesser and greater, lying prostrate thick as the sky before him. The lord gave command to the beautiful women who delighted and comforted him: "I am going to Lanka, the demon city. All you palace attendants and women, arrange five hundred of your number, choosing only splendid young beauties, to go with mighty me in the same jeweled chariot."

Then the diligent spokeswoman received the demon king's command, made obeisance, and went out.

She arranged the palace women of lovely appearance, faces and figures splendid, slender, tender, and pleasing to the eye, five hundred women all beautiful. They bathed, rubbed themselves with fragrance, applied powder, adorned and polished themselves. Each woman dressed in her own way, put oil in her hair, and combed in busy confusion. They looked in mirrors, set their hairline, brightened their faces until they shone like the moon, and stood beautiful as celestial women of Surali, waiting for the king's departure.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha and Mulpalam the asura went to sleep in the night. When dawn opened its light, bright and radiant, they walked to the bathing place.

The two kings washed and bathed in divine fragrant water full of flower-pollen. Each wore curved-edged trousers and fig-patterned cloth girded at the waist, with fluttering hems and side panels of swan-vines. They put on armor of diamonds set with rubies, breastplates, chains, jeweled directional plaques, pine-shaped necklaces, shining jeweled belts, carved bracelets, and ruby armlets. Each wore rings with crested settings and a diamond crown bright with rainbow light, with nine-jewel ear-ornaments engraved in patterns. The elder brother spread two thousand hands, each holding every kind of weapon for battle; the younger brother firmly grasped a spear, brandishing it back and forth.

When all was ready, they walked down from the yaksha palace with the lovely concubines and mounted the great victory-chariots.

O the chariot, the royal war-chariot: two deep, ornate chariots, with graceful curved yokes and tiered thrones all carved in patterns. The chariot of the elder king rose high, shining as if to touch the sky. The palace women sat around in rows, beautiful like divine kinnara women. It was yoked with four thousand royal lions, fierce and brave in war. The charioteer held a javelin and drove swiftly as wind. Tall emblems were complete, with standards and victory-flags fluttering at their tips. Demon troops marched densely packed, and gongs and drums sounded in a heavy roar. The younger brother went before, with the army shouting thunderously. Dark smoke deepened and they drove on in urgent haste.

When they reached Lanka city, wise Mulpalam halted the powerful army and set it outside the capital.

When this was done, he descended from the royal victory-chariot and went to attend his elder brother at the shining jeweled chariot.

He bowed his head before his supreme elder brother and reported: "Your righteous Majesty remains firm outside the city. I will bow farewell and go first to tell the lord of Lanka, my friend, so that he may come receive Your Majesty and escort the lord of the earth into the victorious city. This is fitting for the feet of a great crowned king, and Your fame will appear through heaven and earth." Having spoken, he walked boldly like a lion-king, mounted the jeweled chariot, and entered Lanka.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the Solar Line, learned that his friend had come. The asura was filled with joy, as if he had gained the wealth, splendor, and attendants of the three worlds. Smiling and laughing with a radiant face, he gladly went to receive his beloved friend.

He had the chariot rest at the shining jeweled landing-place, and the two walked together up into the ornate jeweled palace.

The two kings sat together on the throne-seat, rejoicing in royal fellowship, honoring one another with steady hearts and gracious friendship.

Then Mulpalam the yaksha embraced his friend with joy and asked: "Those enemy kings: where are their lands and cities? What Solar Line and family are they from, that they dare come here in arrogance?"

Then brave Raphanasura heard and spoke: "The base men who have come are named Rama and Lakshmana, beloved nephews of radiant Atchaban, sprouts of King Thotsarot, dwelling in the city of Ayutthaya. They have power through their arrows, and the monkey troops are brave. They crossed the great ocean and have slaughtered the yaksha Solar Line. This time I see no one who can destroy them and end their lives. Therefore I invited my life-sharing friend to plan together how to kill the enemies."

Then King Mulpalam heard his life-sharing friend, and anger burned like fire across the sky. He stamped his foot and roared, his voice rolling like thunder: "Why did you not inform me of this matter, as if we did not love one another? It has grown so long and great that the asura kin have died. What are humans the size of flies? How much power can they have? Now my mighty elder brother, fierce in battle, has angrily raised the great army to cool this distress throughout the victorious city. He has camped outside the palace grounds. Go attend my elder brother and invite him to enter, so we may plan the killing of the enemy kings."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line learned that the elder king had brought his army, and he rejoiced. Ten mouths laughed with pleasure; he clapped his hands until all trembled. Together they walked and mounted the ornate royal chariot.

The two kings went one after the other, ordering Lothan to drive the lions quickly out from the city of Lanka and along the road.

When they arrived, the chariot halted. The two friends descended from the car and walked to attend the asura king.

Each bowed at the lotus feet of the radiant lord, the crest of Pangtan, with delighted hearts, amid the yakshas.

Then Sahatsadecha the created king saw Thotsakan bow before him and rejoiced. He spoke graciously: "Thotsakan the yaksha, how strong are these proud and arrogant enemies? All the Solar Line of Brahma cannot withstand their hand. When I received your letter, my heart burned as if I lay in fire. I hurried to levy the fourfold battle-array and a hundred thousand demon ministers, hoping to aid the fight and kill them."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard the royal command and was filled with joy, as if he had gained the wealth and attendants of the three worlds. He answered the yaksha king: "The humans Rama and Lakshmana are bold. They are skilled in the bow; their power shakes sky and earth. The forest-monkey soldiers are swift in battle. All of them know how to walk the sky and cover the earth, all seventy-seven oceans of them. Even if they are killed with weapons, their lives do not fully end. Your Majesty's mercy is higher than the heaven of splendor. I invite you to enter the city and rest the army in Lanka."

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha heard and anger crowded his breast, burning like doomsday fire. "Look, look. Humans and forest-monkeys. Why do they come boasting of bravery, not knowing that their lives will end by the hand of glorious Death?" Having spoken, he ordered the hundred thousand soldiers, all the troops, elephants, horses, and chariots to move and enter the royal city.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha led his elder brother to the fortifications of Lanka. Looking at the victory-chariot of the yaksha king, he saw that it was higher and larger than the gate-opening. He ordered Mahothon: "Hurry and tear down the city wall on the southern side first. Make it smooth and level with the ground so the lord's chariot can enter."

Then Mahothon, the great general, received the command of the lord of the world and drove the workers to dismantle the wall.

Some levered, some carried in tumult; some dug and some dismantled on every side. They pounded it flat until the ground was smooth and level, completing the asura's command.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha had the jeweled chariot moved into the city of Lanka.

The twenty-armed yaksha king looked carefully at the city. Its walls and battlements delighted the eye; the spaces between merlons were even. Gate pavilions and door-panels stood in place; moats and embankments enclosed it. Gun-forts and fighting towers stood in rows, with golden flags, parasols, and ornaments. Jeweled roads were paved with stone, clean and shining. Public buildings, markets, houses, and people's dwellings were not crowded but set in lovely order. Residences, palaces, storehouses, and barracks formed long rows; the royal court had a field for contests; cool audience-seats shone with gems; and three palaces rose beyond sight. Four-faced halls were pleasant like heavenly mansions, with peaks shaped as four-faced Brahma. Gables showed Garudas seizing nagas; railings and roof-finials curved beautifully. Latticed windows glimmered from afar, set like ornate crystal. The floors rose in seven receding tiers, completely beautiful and pleasing to the heart. The royal city of Lanka was delightful and splendid beyond compare. Admiring it as they went, they hurried the victory-chariot onward to the asura's palace.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king led his elder brother to the front court. He had him alight at the jeweled landing-place, excellent with pearls, and invited the demon king up into the jeweled Surakan palace.

He seated him upon the throne-seat amid ministers on the left and right, all prostrate thickly, majestic as Thao Wetsuwan. Then he gave royal command to the diligent great general: "Tell all the attendants to prepare splendid equipment and offer it to my elder brother. Feed the soldiers and warriors with rice, liquor, ducks, chickens, festival food, savory dishes, sweets, and every kind of thing."

Then Mahothon, the great general, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and hurried out.

He ordered the palace department to inform all the inner and outer cooks to prepare delicious food according to the asura's command.

Then the four duty-officers of the palace department received the great general's notice and issued instructions everywhere.

Then the diligent outer kitchen women received the notice and ran in sudden confusion, dividing the work by station. Some roasted, some made curries, some made phanaeng and grilled food; every savory and sweet dish was complete. They prepared side-dishes with strong liquor, all excellent.

Then lovely Montho selected beautiful young women, lovely and graceful in form, all slender and tender like young celestial women. With the twelve royal attendants, they went up together to attend her husband.

They bowed their heads at the lotus feet of Sahatsadecha the yaksha and Mulpalam the asura in the jeweled palace.

Then the left and right palace attendants carried the service-vessels up in sequence and presented them to the demon king.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line invited the two kings, and the yakshas ate the meal.

Then the left and right attendants, with the twelve beautiful palace women, came in to fan them. Some women poured distilled liquor into shining golden cups and offered it to the asura king according to their stations.

The women entertainers sang, their voices lingering, soft, and clear, blending lamenting tones in a sweet and pleasing song. Some beat the ramanas and small drums; cymbals and clappers answered the rhythm. Plucked and bowed instruments sounded in a great hum, together with singing and court music.

The dancing women danced before the yaksha kings, lifting and turning their hands in the rhythm of the dance. They circled and shifted right, changing into kinnara forms beside a cave, as if celestial women had descended to dance, every inner woman beautiful and slender. Then they circled and shifted left, changing into shoulder-level poses, artfully shaping the dance to delight the three asura lords.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha and Mulpalam the asura ate while watching the dance. The women were all shining and beautiful, their faces like heavenly apsaras, their gestures and curved movements alike. Their voices and tones were lovely. The yaksha kings gazed in wonder and enchantment, desire and attachment arising toward their beauty, taste, and movement.

Then the left and right outer kitchen women cooked, boiled, roasted, and grilled in uproar, making spicy salads and minced dishes in busy confusion. Elephants were roasted, curried, made into phanaeng and sausages; buffaloes and cattle were fried, minced, and dipped in egg. The side-dishes for liquor were ready and carried out in order.

They set everything neatly in the place where the troops were fed. Sweet and savory dishes were complete, with boiled liquor and fine distilled liquor.

Then the Pangtan yaksha troops sat around together, making a show of drinking liquor in noisy tumult. Drunk, they boasted loudly, danced, made music, and rolled their faces. They seized and pulled at asura women, grabbing in wild confusion. Those who had eaten too much vomited; not one of them could act properly. The whole front court roared, officers and commoners delighted.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha finished eating the rice-meal and spoke to Thotsakan: "Alas, your wife Montho has a sad and grieving face. She is thin and faded because she grieves for her beloved son. As for this war, leave this brother's task to me. I will help break it. I will kill both Rama and Lakshmana in their arrogance with the wise lord's mace-weapon, given to me. Its power and greatness are possessed by no one beneath the sky. If I point with the upper end, one dies; if I point with the lower end, one rises again. What are humans the size of lice, and those vile forest-monkeys?"

Then Raphanasura the yaksha heard his elder brother's words and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. Ten mouths laughed with pleasure, and ten faces were like haloed moons. "Now the treacherous enemies will all die by Your power. I will raise the fourfold army and follow Your Majesty out. I will look upon the faces of the two humans and the monkey host."

Then battle-skilled Sahatsadecha heard the twenty-armed king and ordered the ministers: "Prepare the fourfold warriors, elephants, jeweled chariots, and mounts. I will go subdue the enemy kings. Have everything ready in one moment."

Then the diligent Pangtan generals and the ministers of the ten-headed yaksha made obeisance and went out.

The Pangtan ministers arranged the troops in confusion to left and right as a fourfold army of elephants, chariots, jeweled cars, and horses. The army of the viceroy, all bold and battle-skilled, thirty oceans of troops, became the vanguard against the enemy. The royal army of the elder brother formed the main army, its troops like lion-kings, each large, black, stout, and holding every kind of weapon. On the Lanka side there were thirty-seven oceans of soldiers, all chosen demons skilled in battle, fierce as doomsday fire. They formed the rear army and flanking guard, shouting and displaying courage. The splendid jeweled chariots were prepared, waiting for the three demon kings to depart.

Then battle-skilled Sahatsadecha and his two mighty younger brothers went to bathe.

The three kings bathed their bodies in fragrant water, its scent spreading sweetly. Their trousers were set with komin gems; their cloth had rice-bundle banners and Garuda-patterned borders. They wore fluttering hems and side panels, diamond armor cut and set with topaz, golden chains and breastplates, pearl directional plaques, jeweled belts with dangling ornaments, gold bracelets set with gems, and ornate armlets. Each wore rings with crested settings, diamond crowns of shining light, great coral earrings, and garlands hanging from the ear-ornaments. Each took up a mace-weapon, jeweled spears, fierce bows, and arrows, descended from the ornate palace, and mounted the Surakan chariots.

O the chariot, the war-chariot: deep with pearls and gems, its curved front and ringing wheels shook Cakkrawan mountain, and its height towered into the sky. It was yoked with two thousand elephant-lions; behind that was yoked a lion-king; the rear chariot was yoked with fierce tigers. The charioteers drove like wind. Umbrellas, standards, bright flags, pennants, victory-parasols, and royal flywhisks were complete. The army pressed densely together; gongs and drums sounded in a heavy roar. Pipes, trumpets, and conches rang out, all three armies sounding together. The tramp of the soldiers' feet thundered as they shouted and drove forward.

Then Thotsakan marched as the rear army, holding the soldiers in the back. The asura rejoiced as they went. When they had passed beyond the city and entered the great road, a strange omen appeared, for the Pangtan army was to be lost. The sun shone clear, but thunder boomed in the sky and lightning struck, hitting the curved yoke of the demon king's chariot and snapping it apart at once. It also struck the royal white parasol of the yaksha king and shattered it into ash and dust. The asura was stunned in his whole body.

Then the two-thousand-armed yaksha king saw lightning break and destroy Thotsakan's chariot-yoke. It was a strange and perverse omen, and the yaksha king's heart sank as he thought: "The lord of Lanka has evil fortune. If he goes, he will die by the enemy." He halted his chariot and spoke graciously: "Radiant younger brother, now a great sign has arisen. Dear brother, return into the city. We two armies will win victory over the humans and the forest-monkeys. We will end all those who have come. Younger brother, do not be anxious."

Then the ten-headed demon lord, skilled in war, heard the gracious command. He raised his hands in obeisance and answered: "Your Majesty's mercy is beyond measure. I will rely on the lord's power until my life ends." Having reported, he turned the royal chariot back with the fourfold army, hurrying horses, chariots, and elephants as the yaksha returned into Lanka.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha, when Thotsakan the asura had withdrawn his army back into the city, ordered the fourfold army to move straight along the road. The signal flag waved three times, and the asuras hurried the march.

The sound of horses, chariots, elephants, and brave soldiers shouting shook the earth and reached the sky of Surali, as if great Sattaphan mountain would crack and collapse. King Mulpalam led the vanguard, with a full thirty oceans of troops, brandishing weapons and displaying fierce power in uproar.

When they reached the victorious battlefield, he halted the powerful troops left and right and set them in Naga formation, waiting for the enemy kings.

Rama Sees Sahatsadecha

Then radiant Phra Hariwong, bearing the conch, lay asleep in the night on his splendid jeweled couch. Stars and moon sank behind clouds; the sun shone bright; Phra Phai blew drifting dust, bringing a soft fragrance. Birds wheeled and cried in offering, their voices sweet and loud through the forest. The lord rose from sleep at sunrise.

He washed and dressed in godlike royal ornaments, bright and shining, then left the jeweled chamber and came before the victory-pavilion.

The eighteen crowned chiefs and the mighty soldiers, lesser and greater, were all there. Then he heard a mighty sound shaking the whole earth. He gave royal command, asking Phiphek the yaksha: "This army that has come, is it an asura of Lanka, or kin and lineage of the yaksha Thotsakan? Its roaring uproar is greater than every earlier time."

Then Phiphek, wise in disposition, heard the king's command and calculated according to the hour.

He drove through the manuals and understood by yaksha wisdom. Bowing with joined hands, the asura answered the royal command: "This army is not of Thotsakan's Solar Line. It is his beloved life-sharing friend, the great viceroy of Pangtan, named Mulpalam, a mighty yaksha of fierce sacred power. With him is powerful Sahatsadecha, the demon lord's brother from the same womb. That friend is the crest of his city, famous in battle-power. He has raised the army and soldiers to aid the city of Lanka."

Then Phra Narai, lord of the strong arm, heard the astrologer's words and asked: "These two demon lords are so powerful that the ten directions cannot withstand their strength. Whom do you see this time who should go out and win against the asuras?"

Then Phiphek, yaksha of the Solar Line, heard Phra Chakri's speech, joined his hands, and answered the royal command: "The monkey kings who might go fight the yakshas would find it hard to defeat the asuras, for this war is very great. I invite the lotus feet of the discus-bearing lord himself to go out and destroy the demon lords. I think they can be broken by Your Majesty's power."

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak heard Phiphek the asura and gave royal command: "King Sukhrip, quickly inspect and prepare the warriors. I will go out to battle the two fierce demon lords."

Then mighty, strong Sukhrip received the Garuda-bearing lord's command, made obeisance, and went out.

He appointed bold Hanuman, son of the Wind, to hold ten oceans of troops as the vanguard. The side-guard, Angkhot the grandson of Amarin, held five oceans of monkey troops. The royal army of the discus-armed lord had ten oceans of skilled warriors, all chosen powerful monkeys holding every kind of weapon. The dispatch-officer, the monkey Nilnon, held five oceans of monkey troops. The rear army was Khomut, commanding an equal force of battle-troops. The left and right wings, forest scouts, vigilant watchers, three-spear and seven-spear companies, were all complete, each chosen for excellence. Their power could overturn the earth; common soldiers and commanders roared in tumult. They yoked the jeweled chariot and waited for Phra Chakri to depart.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bow in hand, and mighty Phra Lak went to bathe.

Jeweled sprinklers poured down like rain, and they bathed in sweet divine fragrance. Their trousers were ornate with swan-vines and graceful jeweled edges. The elder brother wore divine cloth on a green ground, with golden vines shaped like royal lions; the younger brother wore fig-patterned cloth with kinnara designs. Each wore fluttering hems, side panels bright with nine jewels, gleaming diamond armor, three battle-chains across the breast, hanging emerald directional plaques, bracelets blazing with gems, ornate armlets, and rainbow-shining rings in Garuda settings. The younger brother wore a godlike diadem; the elder wore the crown, with golden garlands hanging from the ear-ornaments. Both took up fierce and powerful arrows.

When they were ready, the two moved with graceful majesty like swan-riding god-kings. With the monkey hosts of the Solar Line, they came to mount the royal victory-chariot.

O the royal chariot: carved with gems, spokes and wheels ornate, with graceful curved yoke, tiered finials, and a floating throne. Lion-tiered gables were lovely; railings, pillars, and carved floral hangings shone; porches glittered, set with gems; five peaks gleamed with gold. It was yoked with divine steeds whose power was like the horses of the shining Sun. Matali drove with graceful hand. Narai's younger brother sat in front with joined hands. Peacock parasols, fans, fluttering flags, standards, royal flywhisks, foreign trumpets, and curved trumpets crowded in uproar. The army shouted to take the omen, and the world roared in confusion. Dust rose thick and clouded the sky as the troops hurried one another forward.

Then the monkey soldiers, lesser and greater, came near the victorious battlefield and looked toward the edge of the forest. They saw mighty Sahatsadecha riding in his chariot amid the army. His body was huge like Mount Atsakan; his faces were a thousand faces. His teeth were green, his fangs white and shining, jutting out from the yaksha's mouths. His eyes were red like sunlight, and two thousand hands held weapons. When the monkeys saw the demon, they trembled in terror, frightened to the utmost. Afraid of his fierce power, they ran away in wild confusion.

Only Sukhrip, Hanuman, Angkhot, Chomphuphan the great warriors, the eighteen crowned chiefs, and wise Phiphek remained.

Then the jeweled discus-lord of the Solar Line and his splendid younger brother saw the monkeys broken and senseless, with only the son of the Sun, Phiphek the yaksha, Hanuman, Angkhot, the monkey lords, and the eighteen monkey ministers remaining. The lord found it strange and puzzling. Holding the discus and keeping his arrow ready, he asked the younger brother of the twenty-armed king: "Phiphek, astrologer, listen. I have raised the army to kill and destroy the yaksha line. In every earlier battle, the monkeys were bold and proud in power, like lion-kings seizing deer. Today I see the matter changed. They have scattered in terror in every direction. Thinking of it, I find it wondrous."

Then Phiphek, wise in disposition, heard the king's speech, bowed, and answered the royal command: "This Sahatsadecha has fierce and brave power. He received a supreme boon from Brahma, a great marvel: when he enters battle, enemies will fear his sacred power. When the monkeys saw the demon lord, they would not wait to face the yaksha."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, the creator, heard the younger brother of Thotsakan. The righteous lord commanded his younger brother, together with King Sukhrip, the son of the Wind, and the eighteen brave crowned chiefs: "Go pursue the soldiers and army, and bring them back into the victorious host."

Then Phra Lak and the great warriors received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and hurried away together.

They traveled through the forest line, along water-edges and mountain landings, calling the monkey troops and driving them back in noisy uproar.
