This is the sixty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Hanuman fighting Sahatsadecha after breaking the diamond mace, binding the thousand-faced king with his tail, the monkeys' public mockery of Sahatsadecha, Hanuman's killing of the Pangtan king, Thotsakan's grief and summons of Saeng Athit from Romkhan, Saeng Athit's arrival and feast in Lanka, his march to the battlefield, Phiphek's warning about Saeng Athit's deadly mirror, and Angkhot's deception of Brahma to gain the mirror before battle.

Translation

Hanuman Kills Sahatsadecha

Then the thousand-faced yaksha king saw the monkey break the club and throw it at him. The asura was furiously angry and commanded the demon army: "Hurry in, attack, and fight. Seize that white monkey, servant of Rama and Lakshmana. I will break his neck and chew him up this moment."

Then the yaksha battle-host received the command, set themselves, and entered the fight against the monkey.

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, alone fought face to face, attacking and warring against the yakshas.

He was bold as the lion-king turning on a herd of deer. Feet kicked, hands slapped in confusion, and he cut them down by the strength of his power.

Then the demon-yaksha troops, fearing their lord and not sparing their lives, pressed in together and continually reinforced one another.

They struck, hacked, and slashed wildly, hurling every kind of weapon, shooting bows, crossbows, and fire-guns, intent on killing him.

Then the son of Vayu, brave and wise, fought, charged, broke through, and rushed into the middle of the army.

He stepped on shoulders and seized yaksha heads, turning and twisting with strong force. With four arms he fought the asuras, sweeping left and right in chaos. Of all the soldiers and troops, not one remained; they lay dead across the forest by his fierce battle power.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha, bereft of chariot and of all ten divisions of troops, grew angry like doomsday fire. He seized a powerful sacred arrow, fierce and potent, laid it to the string, aimed to attack, and the demon lord released it.

The whole sky grew dark and crowded. Arrows spread beyond counting and struck victorious Hanuman's body, filling every hair.

Then the son of Vayu, brave and wise, was struck by the asura king's arrows, but the monkey's body was not even scratched. With four hands he pulled them out, broke them playfully, leapt and danced to mock the yaksha, then sprang with power to pursue and attack the demons.

He leapt up, stepped on shoulders, and seized heads, turning, shifting, and wheeling. Each side stabbed, received blows, and cut; they guarded and parried in confusion.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha swung weapons in two thousand hands, and the asura pressed in to attack.

With his left foot he stamped on the monkey's knee and struck with the yaksha bow. It hit Hanuman's body many times, and the monkey lord reeled and swayed.

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, was enraged, his eyes red like flame. He swung his trident and drove at the asura.

He snatched away all two thousand weapons, stabbed and cut the yaksha's body, and kicked him repeatedly with his feet. The asura could not withstand his power.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha suffered pain multiplied a thousandfold. The asura was shaken and afraid in heart. His thought was gone, his bodily strength gone, all weapons great and small gone, all his army gone, and nothing remained with which to fight. He stood rigid and stunned in all his body, cherishing life to the utmost. "Ah, the human's soldier has terrible power that no one can equal." Then pride rose in him through foolish delusion: "I too am a brave and fierce man, finest of the Solar Line yakshas. My name is famous through the three worlds. How could I shrink before an enemy? Even if I die, I do not regret my life; let my honor be shown in this moment." Thinking so, he roared like a lion-king, leapt with power, and tore up a mountain in tumult.

The mountain broke under his strength with a sound like thunder. Two thousand hands lifted it up, and the asura hurled it after the monkey.

Then mighty Hanuman, skilled in battle, caught, received, and warded it off with all four arms, then rushed in to fight the asura.

He brandished the diamond trident, circling and striking, cut, kicked, and stabbed the yaksha. The asura fell to the ground, and the monkey set his foot on him.

Then he raised his hands in homage to Phra Sayamphu, the lord. Closing his eyes, he recited the powerful spell and at once created the monkey's tail.

By the force of that skilled knowledge, the tail grew long and great. It gathered and bound the asura, wrapping around his whole body.

Then the two-thousand-armed yaksha twisted and shook with all his power, but the monkey's tail did not come loose from his body. The more he moved, the more it tightened, tormenting him with severe pain. His power and thought spent, the asura sat grieving and lamenting.

"Alas for me. Wasted is my knowledge of creative spells. Wasted is my fierce power, bright as doomsday fire, and all the weapons of my two thousand hands. I was born as a brave man, strong and skilled in the bow. My fame and power were spread abroad, and my force subdued the three worlds. How could I be deluded by the breath of a forest-monkey, who tricked the mace from me, until I lost myself and my life? Who will count that as good? I am disgrace and shame to all the gods, and to humans, garudas, and nagas." Speaking so, the asura grieved.

Then the son of Vayu, brave and wise, loosened his tail from the asura's body and flew away by the path of the sky.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the king of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow: "I, your monkey servant, went to fight the yaksha king. Now I have bound him and left him in public disgrace. He has not yet died. Let all the monkeys go together and mock the asura."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line heard the son of Vayu's words and rejoiced as if he had gained half the sky. He gave royal command to the soldiers on left and right: "Go mock the asura, to fit the face of that wretch."

Then the monkey soldiers, great and small, received the command of the lord of the three worlds. Delighted, they all hurried away.

When they arrived, they saw the asura, his body as large as a mountain, with one thousand heads and two thousand arms, white fangs long and curved up to his eyes. Hanuman had bound him with his tail, and he sat groaning at the edge of the forest. Then they saw the asura women running about in grief and sorrow. The monkeys were delighted, clapped their hands, laughed with pleasure, and chased the attendant women in confusion.

Then the asura women, great and small, saw the monkeys chasing them and were frightened. The palace women ran into one another.

They shrieked in terror and confusion, falling and scrambling as their bodies shook. They slipped aside into the forest thickets and scattered senselessly.

Then the monkey soldiers chased, blocked off, and seized the asura women, roaring in tumult.

Some grabbed shoulders, some cloth, some hands. They laughed as they struggled and dragged them before the asura, mocking the yaksha.

"Is this the lord of Pangtan, whose brothers boasted of courage and strength? You came to help and win reward; now the yaksha has received just what he wished. Ho, big empty fool, you did not understand Hanuman even a little. You boasted of two thousand hands and claimed power, but could you fight mighty Phra Chakrit? I thank you greatly for kindly bringing your wives here to me in this hard and lonely place. Or do you wish for monkey seed?" Speaking so, they reached for the attendant women, bared their teeth, shouted, and frightened them. Some monkeys seized and pulled at arms, dragging and tugging at clothing in confusion. "Ho, ho, old yaksha, look how we enjoy these beauties." Speaking so, they kissed the asura women and moved back and forth in mockery.

Then Sahatsadecha the yaksha saw the monkeys insulting him and grew enraged, eyes red like the sun. A thousand mouths screamed and roared, their sound thundering up to Dusit. "Ho, beasts, enemies, do not pause to boast of power, vile ones." Crying this, he sprang up and stamped his feet, displaying force to chase the noble monkeys. The more he struggled, the tighter his body was held, and the asura was bound in bitter anger.

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, after the forest-monkey troops had finished mocking the asura with contempt, drew his terrible and powerful hand-weapon. Brandishing it and showing its force, he cut off the asura's topknot and hair.

His heads were cut off and flew away by the noble monkey's power. He fell to the ground and lost his life.

When he had finished destroying the yaksha, the brave divine son of Vayu led the monkey attendants to attend the powerful incarnate lord.

He bowed his head and reported to the supreme king: "I have killed Sahatsadecha the asura and ended his life."

Then Phra Narai, blessed and radiant, heard the son of Vayu and rejoiced. He spoke sweet words: "You do not fall short of the divine line. Your power is bright and your name famous in courage. Wherever I send you, you accomplish the royal task, wise and skilled in every matter. Your strength and fierce power are known through all three worlds and cannot be compared. You are fit to be my eyes and heart in battle." Having spoken, he turned the noble chariot and ordered the monkey warriors to withdraw. They shouted until the earth thundered and returned to the pavilion.

Then Saran, the yaksha messenger, had been hiding at the mountain foot. He saw the viceroy king die, and also the lord of the city of Pangtan killed by Hanuman's trick. All the soldiers and the whole army were gone. Frightened, he hurried into the city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to Raphanasura the yaksha: "Mulpalam the asura went to fight Phra Lak the younger brother until all his troops were gone and the lord lost his life. Sahatsadecha the asura also fell into Hanuman's deception. That one monkey fought and killed until every soldier was gone. Then he seized him, bound him in disgrace, and destroyed him."

Then the ten-faced yaksha heard as if a thunderbolt had struck and torn away his whole body. He hugged his knees and sat rigid, stunned for a time, unable to speak. Tears filled his eyes. He sighed with immeasurable grief: "Alas, my elder brother, whose name was famous through all three worlds, and Mulpalam, my beloved friend, both mighty in rank and power. How could they lose to the fierce power of humans and vile beasts, like base and common men, bringing disgrace through all the earth?" In suffering and sorrow beyond thought, his heart burned as if scorched by fire. When evening came and the sun's light ended, he went into the sleeping chamber.

He reclined upon the couch, raised his hands over his face, and wept. "Alas, whom now can I send out to fight the enemies? The Solar Line in Lanka and my life-sharing friends are all dead. Bah, earth-walking humans have come to despise me to this extent." He kept rising and sitting, not sleeping, until the sun shone in bright light. Then the asura bathed his body and came out to the throne hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white parasol's shade, with the asura-yaksha host lying prostrate thickly before him. He gave royal command to the demon ministers: "The human war that has been raised against us is brave, strong, and bold. My thousand-faced elder brother, whose sacred power shook the earth, and Mulpalam went to fight and together lost and died. I am lord of the asuras, yet when I raised my army and went out to storm and fight, I could not break them as I wished. Who is there who is bold, powerful, and brave enough to go strike them, kill them, and destroy all the forest-monkey army?"

Then the ministers, great and small, heard the lord's command, bowed, and answered: "In Your Majesty's Solar Line, the one with wisdom and courage appears to be mighty Saeng Athit, the demon lord who is a royal son. He is the son of your younger brother King Khon and has a powerful mirror like burning fire, granted by supreme Brahma in the sixteenth heaven. If it shines on anyone, that one loses life and dies. Send to invite Your Majesty's nephew to kill the enemy king."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard and rejoiced as if he had gained a divine jewel. Twenty hands clapped his thighs loudly; ten mouths of the demon lord laughed happily. His faces brightened like the moon, and he gave command: "True. My mighty nephew. Only when you said it did I think of him. Ho, Nontakan, my life-sharing servant, hurry and bring my nephew here."

Then Nontakan the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, made obeisance, and left the throne hall.

He flew up into the sky by the strength of his firm power, crossed the ocean like the great Garuda, and hurried onward.

When he reached Romkhan city, Nontakan, wise in disposition, swiftly descended from the sky and entered the asura palace.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of Saeng Athit the yaksha and reported: "Now your royal uncle has sent me to attend your feet. The war of the two humans is still joined and heavily fought. Whoever goes out to resist them dies by the enemy's hand. Intharachit, your elder brother, and Mangkonkan the yaksha both raised armies and went to fight, and both lost their lives. Please go attend the crown-lord, master of the created world, so he may plan war and destroy them before morning."

Then Saeng Athit, the powerful yaksha, learned the news and felt burning heat in his breast as if lightning had struck his body. Love and loss for his elder brother filled him; tears flooded the yaksha's face. He stood stunned and speechless, anger packed in the asura's heart. He clenched his teeth, stamped his feet, and the sound shook all in fear. "Bah, humans and forest-monkeys. Good. Now we shall see." Speaking so, he ordered Chitphairi, his life-sharing tutor: "Hurry and levy the asura-yaksha troops before sunrise."

Then Chitphairi the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, made obeisance, and went out.

He levied the asura-yaksha companies, selecting only the huge and powerful. One troop held fire-guns and wore red battle-coats. One troop wore dark-green coats, hands brandishing swords. One troop held thrusting spears and wore black ground-cloth with crossed vine patterns. One troop wore mist-colored coats and carried daggers, spears, and black sheaths. One troop wore golden-flower coats and held glaives, moving their arms in display. Elephant lords rode rutting elephants, holding goads and standing bright. Horse lords rode high-spirited horses, holding javelins aimed at the foe. Chariot lords drove war-chariots, crowded and eager. Each displayed and boasted power, setting out in different directions.

Then Saeng Athit the yaksha, when dawn brightened, went to bathe in the water.

He bathed his body in the lordly stream from fragrant lotus pipes, with perfumed water scented by flowers spreading delight through the body. He wore curved-edged trousers with glass panels and figured cloth showing lion-kings. Fluttering hems and side-panels were vines of jewels; his scale-armor was naga-patterned and set with gems. Directional plaques, breastplate, and battle-chains covered him; a crystal girdle hung with ornaments. Gold bracelets and armlets were carved in raised work and strung with nine gems. He wore great rings with crested settings, diamonds on all ten fingers, a jeweled crown, earrings, and flower ornaments. He took his bow and brandished it firmly. Beautiful in body and bearing and brave in strength, he appeared like created Death, then walked to mount the golden chariot.

O the chariot, the royal chariot: its wheel-rims shone mixed with gems, its curved yoke was graceful, its flags bright at the tips, its throne glittered with nine jewels. It was yoked with bold royal lions. The charioteer swung a club and stood firm, driving now slowly, now swiftly as blowing wind. Peacock parasols, fly-whisks, and standards crowded it. Pennants streamed to the ropes' ends. Selected guards held guns, bows, and arrows. Pipes, gongs, victory-drums, and curved trumpets sounded, and the army roared densely. The troops shouted to raise the omen, stirring the world in tumult. Dust darkened the sun as they urged the army across the ocean.

When he reached the city of Lanka, he halted the great army, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and went up to attend his royal uncle.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of the lord of Brahma's line, while the asura army waited in the middle for the king's command.

Then Raphanasura the yaksha saw Saeng Athit and rejoiced. The asura embraced his beloved nephew. "You who are the heart of my eyes, famous in power through all three worlds, this war is very heavy, and planning brave action is hard. Whoever I appoint to go out loses; none can withstand their skill. Our relatives and kin have died, so I sent for you, hoping to rely on my brave and powerful nephew. Raise your army and go out as the vanguard of your uncle."

Then Saeng Athit, wise in disposition, heard the lord's speech, bowed, and answered: "The humans and monkey host have come to despise Your Majesty's feet without fear. I, your nephew, am bitterly angry. Though they have power, I do not fear them. I alone volunteer to kill them and end their lives. Your Majesty, crest of the yakshas, should not raise the army and go out, losing the honor of Brahma's line and feeling shame before all the gods. Leave the two humans and forest-monkeys as my work; I will fight them."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard his beloved nephew's words and rejoiced that his thought had been fulfilled. Stroking his face and back, he commanded: "Beloved jewel, blood of my line, not in vain was your father powerful, for kin and friends will rely on you henceforth." Having spoken, he gave a royal command to the great minister: "Tell the inner and outer kitchens to prepare delicious royal food, both savory and sweet, and strong victorious liquor. Offer it to my nephew and feed the army as well."

Then the diligent minister received the yaksha king's command, bowed, and came out.

He ordered the duty-officers to notify the inner and outer kitchens, left and right, to prepare splendid food according to the asura's command.

Then the yaksha kitchen women received the notice and issued supplies in confusion, preparing according to their assigned tasks.

The inner kitchen arranged and set the royal dishes in order. Savory and sweet dishes were complete, with every kind of delicious flavor.

Then the left and right attendants brought the services in sequence and offered them to the asura king.

Then the ten-faced yaksha invited his beloved life-sharing nephew to enter and eat in pleasure.

Then the attendants, great and small, adorned themselves beautifully and came to serve the demon king. Some poured distilled liquor into shining golden cups, bowed with joined hands, and offered service to the ruler of Lanka. Some attended with fans, swinging fly-whisks to left and right, glancing sideways at the asura king.

The women entertainers sang plaintively, their fresh voices soft and flowing. Lamenting tones circled within the melody, while plucked and bowed instruments joined sweetly. Some beat ramanas and small drums, and cymbals and clappers answered the rhythm. The sound was pleasing and caught the heart, delighting the yaksha lords.

[Phra Thong]

The dancing women danced, bending and turning their hands with artful feeling. They lined in rows face to face and wheeled, weaving and changing places. Then they cast both hands in gentle curves, circling near the yaksha lord, glancing sidelong, shifting into the Phat Cha posture. Then they curved their arms in circles, changed again, danced the three-stringed fiddle posture, graceful, delicate, and lovely, and offered the dance to the yaksha king.

Then the diligent outer kitchen women finished preparing the whole feast and carried it in.

They set it in the front court: strong liquor, roasted elephants, spicy gaur salad, pigs, chickens, cattle, buffaloes, and goats, spread in rows everywhere.

Then the soldiers, great and small, saw the feast arrive and rejoiced. Officers and commoners sat around, making a show of it. Some drank liquor and ate side-dishes, smiling and laughing in uproar. In confused noise, they sang, quarreled, cursed, struck, and argued. Some danced and made faces, grabbing at the young kitchen women in play. The yakshas tugged and pulled in confusion and rejoiced.

Then Saeng Athit the yaksha ate while gazing at the inner dancing women. He was delighted and happy in the taste of love. The yaksha lord thought on desire, listening to their voices and tones until they caught his heart; he drifted in pleasure and did not know his own body.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha, when he had finished eating the rice-meal, spoke sweetly: "Listen, beloved nephew, strong, mighty, and fierce in sacred power. If you finish this disastrous war, I will reward you to your heart's desire. I will give you the taxes and tribute of foreign lands throughout my realm. Whatever you desire, I will not withhold it from you." Having said this, he removed his royal chain and took the ring from his right hand. "This thing is from the time of your grandfather. Beloved, receive it."

Then Saeng Athit, wise in disposition, received the gift with delight, bowed, and answered: "Your nephew was orphaned of his father, but by Your Majesty's power I have been sheltered. I will fight to death without regret for life and will ask to destroy the enemy." Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of the yaksha king, descended from the jeweled palace, and went to the demon lord's victorious army.

When he arrived, he sat upon a shining seat and ordered his battle-skilled tutor to inspect the yaksha soldiers.

Then diligent Chitphairi received the command, bowed, and hurried out.

He inspected the proud fourfold army, choosing only the fierce and brave. Elephant lords yoked victorious-tusked elephants, cruel-hearted, scarred, mad, and in rut. Mahouts and handlers brandished goads, strong in power. Horse lords yoked battle-skilled horses, swift and high-spirited, with riders holding golden spears and wearing shining silk helmets and coats. Chariot lords yoked splendid golden chariots, with iron rims and patterned wheel-rims. Charioteers held bows, standing ready to draw and destroy. Chariots were yoked with lions and tigers that leapt with speed like the wind. Army chiefs inspected and readied the battle troops, fierce, eager, and skilled in war, brandishing hand-weapons while waiting for the asura to proceed.

Then Saeng Athit, yaksha of the Solar Line, when the army was prepared, went to bathe.

He washed and bathed his body in pleasure; jeweled sprays scattered like falling rain. He rubbed himself with the royal perfumed ointment, scented like lotus and flowers. He wore raised-pattern trousers with leaf-vine designs and black cloth with elephant-lion patterns, its lower edge shaped as kinnari figures moving their hands. Side-panels and fluttering hems shook at the ends. His splendid shirt shone bright, with fine diamond armor and a slender ruby breast-band. Directional plaques, engraved breastplate, and three emerald chains adorned him. Bracelets and armlets were carved in patterns; diamond rings shone in Garuda settings. He wore the great crown for battle, with crystal ear-ornaments set between pearls. Taking his powerful arrow, bright as doomsday fire, he mounted the splendid golden chariot.

O the chariot, the royal chariot: its wheel-rims were set with pearls, its curved yoke all made of coral, and its broad throne of nine jewels. Its receding tiers were carved with curling vines and panels of Garuda seizing naga, standing firm; not even a divine palace could equal it. It was wholly resistant to weapons. Fierce royal lions were yoked to it, leaping and roaring loudly. The charioteer held a gun and brandished it, driving swiftly through the middle of the army. Royal umbrellas, fly-whisks, and standards were set all around, fans waving bright through the sky. Pipes, gongs, and victory-drums roared; banners waved above in triumph. The soldiers shouted in proud courage, their voices shaking the earth. Dust hid the dawn as they went straight to the battlefield.

When he reached the edge of the forest, the asura saw the stinking dead scattered across the earth, their odor spreading toward him. He ordered the great army halted and set firm at the foot of the mountain in marching order, waiting for the monkey army.

Then Phra Hariwong, bearer of the arrow, lay sleeping upon the splendid couch in the great bed-place. Stars and moon moved away through the sky, and the sun neared dawn with bright light. The breeze blew softly, carrying the flowers' fragrance. Birds cried in offering, their calling voices filling the forest, pleasant as music and recitation. The lord rejoiced in heart.

He entered the bathing place, put on the paired ornaments of the discus-bearing lord, took the Brahmastra weapon that subdues yakshas, and turned toward the front of the victory-pavilion.

The soldiers of both cities, the monkey ministers and troops, great and small, were gathered. Just then he heard a fierce sound shaking and thundering over the earth. He gave royal command, asking the yaksha astrologer: "This army that has come: is it an asura from Lanka, or the Solar Line and friends close to the yaksha king, raised from another city, or is it Thotsakan himself?"

Then Phiphek, the diligent astrologer, heard the Garuda-bearing lord, bowed, and took the omen.

Looking through the ten times and the three eyes, he clearly knew the matter without error. He bowed and reported to the lord of the three worlds: "The victorious army that has come is Saeng Athit, mighty in power, son of King Khon the yaksha, younger brother of Mangkonkan the asura, and nephew of the lord of Lanka. He has a jeweled mirror as weapon, terrible in power beyond the shining sun. Whoever it shines upon dies. Brahma granted it to the asura, but his friend did not bring it down; he deposited it with radiant Thao Thada. If war comes, his life-sharing tutor, the wise and sharp-minded yaksha Chitphairi, must go up to fetch the mirror, and Brahma will give it down. Let Your Majesty send Angkhot, Pali's brave son, to transform himself like the asura and deceive the creator king. Once he has brought the mirror down, then Your Majesty can fight and win; the yaksha will die by the power of the righteous lord."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, the creator, heard Phiphek the yaksha and spoke: "Listen, nephew of Makkhawan, you who are wise in disposition. Transform your body by fierce power to look like Chitphairi, go deceive supreme Brahma, and bring back the yaksha's special mirror." Then he gave royal command to Phiphek the asura astrologer: "Transform and alter him so that he looks like the yaksha tutor; powerful Angkhot will see the yaksha's body."

Then Phiphek of the Solar Line received the command of the Garuda-bearing lord and transformed the body by power.

Then the radiant nephew of Hatsanai inspected all his body, and the monkey lord knew its whole form. When finished, he raised his hands in homage to Phra Sayamphu, gathered his mind, closed his eyes, and recited the spell.

He became the tutor of Saeng Athit, not differing in any detail. He took leave of the lord of the three worlds, swung the club, and flew away by power.

When he arrived before supreme Brahma, he raised his hands over his head and reported to Thao Thada: "Now war has arisen in Lanka. Saeng Athit has sent me to attend Your Majesty, crown of the three worlds, and request the powerful jeweled mirror to bring down and kill the enemies, all the humans and monkeys, according to Your Majesty's announced boon, so that the mighty asura may survive. Please be gracious."

Then radiant Thao Thada did not know the trick of Pali's son, thinking that the asura had sent him. He took the powerful Surakan mirror, blazing with fierce heat and light, from the splendid divine jewel tray and handed it to him at once.
