Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Rama receiving Saeng Athit's deadly mirror from Angkhot, the battle in which Saeng Athit loses his mirror and dies with Chitphairi, the gods' celebration, Thotsakan's grief and renewed direct battle with Rama and Phra Lak, the sunset withdrawal after Thotsakan is struck by Rama's arrow, Montho's counsel to summon Satlung and Trimekha, and the dispatch of Kalasun and Nonnasun with the royal letters.

Saeng Athit Falls

Then the victorious incarnate lord received the jeweled mirror and rejoiced greatly. He raised his hand, stroked Angkhot's back, and said: "You are wise, sharp, and clever, worthy to be born in the line of the asura-protector, fitting the rank and honor of a monkey." Having spoken, he gave command to battle-skilled Sukhrip: "Quickly arrange the army. We will go fight the enemy."

Then the radiant son of the Sun received the command of Phra Chakri, offered joined hands, and came out.

He levied the monkey troops and placed the nephew of Indra as the vanguard, commanding five oceans of soldiers whose power let them walk through the sky. The strong side-guard was Hanuman, with ten oceans of brave warriors, all chosen monkeys of fierce power, able to walk behind the sea as if on land. The royal army held fifteen oceans of soldiers, all fierce in power, able to lift earth and mountain and plunder Indra's city at will. The quartermaster corps, ten oceans of troops, had noble Chomphuphan as chief; all the monkeys were mighty and could travel underground down to Badan. The rear guard was assigned to Nilnon, commanding five oceans of brave troops, strong and victorious, able to circle the universe in an instant. All held weapons in hand, fierce, powerful, strong, crowded and eager in tumult, waiting for the four-armed lord to come.

Then Phra Rama of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow, invited powerful Phra Lak, and the two walked to bathe.

The two kings bathed their bodies, fragrant perfumes spreading sweet scent. Their trousers were set with red gems, with curved edges of kinnari vines. The elder brother wore Kosi cloth, bright green like plantain leaf; the younger brother wore divine black cloth, its raised edge patterned with repeated vines. Both wore fluttering hems that shimmered and jeweled side-panels engraved in patterns. Their upper garments differed in color; breastplates flashed with diamond light. Directional plaques, pine-necklaces, and jeweled chains hung from them, gleaming with gems. Their bracelets were shaped like Vasuki, and their carved armlets were splendid. They wore great rings, crested crowns, diamond earrings, and pearl ear-ornaments. Bearing arrows of fierce victorious power, they came to mount the splendid divine chariot.

O the chariot, the royal chariot, given by the gods according to their wish: its hubs and wheels were all patterned gems, its crested throne flashed with diamonds and gems. Images of gods and Garudas grasping nagas adorned it, standing firm with hanging ornaments. Graceful and high, it surpassed floating celestial mansions, with delicate leaf-work and splendid standards. It was yoked with divine horses, leaping and proud, crying victory in brave delight. Matali drove it like the wind. Standards and victory-flags led the troops. Royal umbrellas and fly-whisks filled the sky with shining movement. Pipes, drums, and gongs answered in uproar; trumpets and conches joined the music. The monkey army shouted, their voices shaking the world. Dust darkened like thick smoke as the troops hurried on.

When they arrived, they saw the enemy army set ready at the foot of the great mountain. The lord commanded the nephew of Hatsanai to storm and attack.

Then the radiant son of King Pali received Phra Chakri's command and drove the monkey troops into battle.

The monkeys ran in to attack, charging by the strength of their courage. They kicked, slapped, bit, and tore the demons, shouting until all shook in tumult.

Then the asura-yaksha troops fought at close quarters, not thinking of life, and drove in to kill the forest-monkeys.

Some shot, some stabbed, contending in battle; they hurled every kind of weapon and ran in thickly to support one another, charging and killing with blows.

Then the noble monkey troops leapt and seized the asuras by their great strength and power.

Yaksha soldiers fell dead by the monkeys' hands. The monkeys glared and killed; heads and bodies lay cut off everywhere, and the asuras broke and piled upon one another.

Then Saeng Athit, firm in mighty power, saw the monkeys storming in and the yakshas breaking and dying senselessly. Angry and furious, he shouted and seized the yaksha arrow. Laying it to the string and drawing it by power, the asura released it.

Its sound rolled in a roar. It became countless strong arrows, striking the forest-monkey army. They died by the yaksha's power.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line saw the yaksha shoot arrows in attack, striking the monkey troops. He drew powerful Agniwat, laid it to the bowstring, fixed his eyes on battle, and released it by power.

The victorious arrow struck the royal chariot of Saeng Athit the yaksha. It shattered into dust, and the lion charioteer died. All the monkeys who had been destroyed returned alive. They shouted until the earth shook and mocked the demon lord in tumult.

Then Saeng Athit, the powerful yaksha, fell from his broken chariot to the earth. The asura burned with anger like doomsday fire. He clenched his teeth, stamped his foot, displayed power, and roared like thunder. Brandishing a trident and raising it firmly, the yaksha hurled it by power.

It blazed like the dawn-sun and flew straight toward Phra Chakrit. It circled the bright jeweled chariot, its sound roaring in tumult.

Then Phra Narai, lord of the Solar Line, saw the demon lord throw the discus, and the lord seized an arrow and released it.

Phlai Wat struck the demon's discus and shattered it, unable to withstand the force. Then it struck mighty Saeng Athit, filling his whole body.

Then the son of King Khon the yaksha, struck by the arrow, burned like fire and nearly lost his life. He forced his heart to remain steady, thinking of Brahma's grace, raised his hands over his head in homage, recited the spell, and rubbed his body.

The arrow came loose at once, and his body was no longer injured. The asura stood thinking: "This human has very great power, and his monkey soldiers are swift and skilled in attack. Of all the weapons in the yaksha city, none seems able to destroy their lives except the special jeweled mirror of supreme Brahma, powerful as doomsday fire. That may destroy them." Having thought this, he ordered Chitphairi, his wise tutor: "Go quickly to attend supreme Thada. Ask for the diamond weapon mirror, fierce and powerful, and bring it down to me without delay, so that I may kill the enemy."

Then the life-sharing yaksha tutor received the command with joined hands, displayed power, and flew away.

When he arrived before supreme Brahma, he bowed his head and raised joined hands, reporting: "Mighty Saeng Athit has sent me to attend your feet. In the realm of Lanka, enemies have come to attack the kingdom. They have fought and killed for a long time, bringing distress and trouble to the whole city. Thotsakan sent him out to fight the two humans and the noble monkeys. I ask for the jeweled mirror to go destroy their lives."

Then the created Thada heard Chitphairi the yaksha and was puzzled. The righteous lord was still for a time, then said: "Why do you speak in this way? Just now you came and took it, and I sent it with the asura."

Then Chitphairi the yaksha heard Thada and was startled as if he would die. His face turned pale at once, and the asura answered the command: "How can this be, powerful lord? Why did you not inspect it and understand clearly? The enemy disguised himself and came up. How could Your Majesty send it with him? What now is to be done? My grief is multiplied beyond measure. Even Lord Brahma did not understand the noble monkey." Having spoken without offering joined hands, the asura flew back.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of Saeng Athit the yaksha and reported: "As for the jeweled mirror of Thao Thada, the enemy transformed and went up first, deceiving the radiant eight-armed lord. Your Majesty did not suspect the foe and sent the jeweled mirror with him."

Then Saeng Athit of the Solar Line heard his life-sharing tutor and the yaksha was shocked. His face paled and fell; he could hardly sustain his body. It was as if Death had come to destroy his life, and his mind lost sense. "Ah, how can this be, my tutor? How could those noble monkeys know so much and go take the jeweled mirror from the sixteenth heaven? This happened because Phiphek, my uncle, told the enemy everything. His heart is crooked and treacherous; he means to destroy his own lineage. Alas, I, who bear power, should not lose my life. Wasted is my brave manhood, that I did not understand the enemy. I have gained disgrace and shame before all the gods. I will fight to death and will not regret life." Having spoken, he clenched his teeth, stamped his foot until all shook, and invited his life-sharing tutor to charge the monkey army.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow, saw the two asuras come to attack and pursue his troops. He descended from the royal chariot with his radiant younger brother, and the two powerful lords entered battle against the two yakshas.

The elder brother charged and seized Saeng Athit with firm power, while the beautiful younger brother seized Chitphairi.

Then the two asura-yakshas received, guarded, and fought hand to hand, and the asuras seized the two kings.

Saeng Athit seized the discus-armed lord and leapt into battle, intent on killing. Chitphairi the asura and the younger brother seized one another. Each struck and received in confusion, each strong in power; each retreated and pursued in close battle, dodging back and forth.

Then the two kings, lords of the Solar Line, leapt with power and stepped onto the shoulders of the two asuras.

They were beautiful like Death skilled in power, come to take the yakshas' lives. Agile and swift at every turn, they struck both asuras. The two reeled under the force of their power; the two lords struck them again and again. The monkey troops shouted urgently and mocked the asuras.

Then the powerful yaksha Saeng Athit was wounded and bruised all over his body. In anger he seized an arrow and released it.

Mount Isinthon and Yugunthon bent and shook in fear. It struck the forest-monkey army, and they died scattered across the earth.

Then the two skilled kings of the Solar Line saw Saeng Athit the asura's arrow strike the monkey soldiers. Phra Narai seized the Brahmastra, and Phra Lak drew the bright Phlai Wat arrow. Aiming at the two asuras, the lords released them by power.

The monkeys rose back to life. The asuras fell dead in great number. The Brahmastra struck Saeng Athit's chest, and Phlai Wat struck Chitphairi. They fell together to the ground by the power of the splendid arrows. Poisonous heat crowded them like fire, and both lives ended together.

Then the gods and celestial women in heaven saw Saeng Athit the yaksha lose his life. Each rejoiced with delight, acclaimed him, and clapped their hands in ringing sound. Some opened the windows of their divine mansions and scattered blooming flowers down. Fragrant scent spread sweetly, filling the nose. Some plucked, bowed, beat, and blew instruments in tumult, and the gods offered victory and blessing: "May Your Majesty bear power and rank; may Your fame be made known by the arrow's light. May no enemy remain to fight you. May prosperity and blessing endure."

Then radiant Phra Sarit-rak, when he had finished killing the asura and all the yaksha troops, saw the gods scatter divine flowers thickly down from heaven. The fragrance spread everywhere, and the righteous lord rejoiced. He gathered and smelled the jeweled flowers, then handed them to his younger brother. All the monkey soldiers wore and smelled the flowers happily. Then he mounted Vejayanta and ordered the troops, great and small, to withdraw. The monkeys shouted victory and returned to the shining pavilion.

Then Saran, the yaksha messenger, saw Saeng Athit dead, along with the yaksha army. Fear almost drove the two demons into the earth. Shaking in terror, they pushed through the thickets and forest and hurried into Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads and reported to Raphanasura the yaksha: "Your royal nephew went to contend in power with the enemy. Now he has lost his life, and all the yaksha warriors with him. The enemy has withdrawn its army and returned to its own camp."

Then the ten-headed one of the Solar Line heard the news, burning like doomsday fire. The yaksha stood silent and stunned. Grieving for his beloved nephew, the yaksha lord sighed deeply: "Bah, humans and forest-monkeys. They have come to despise me without fear. I bear power and have subdued all heaven. I will go out and avenge him, cutting them down so that no clan or cry remains." Having spoken, he ordered Mahothon the yaksha minister: "Quickly prepare the fourfold army. I will go kill the enemy."

Then Mahothon the yaksha received the command with joined hands and came out from the throne hall.

He levied the bold fourfold army, choosing only the strong and capable. One troop had fierce commoner faces, wore sandal-colored coats, and held thrusting spears. One troop wore masks and black coats, holding spears and swinging them in display. One troop had grimacing faces and red coats, holding bows and quivers of drugged arrows. One troop had biting faces and white coats, with head-wraps and raised glaives. Elephant lords rode victorious-tusked elephants. Horse lords rode noble horses. Chariot lords mounted war-chariots, fierce and eager, each holding bow and arrow. Each displayed fierce power and waited for the asura to proceed.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king, when evening and night came, entered the inner sleeping platform. Thinking over the battle, he could not sleep at all. He kept rising and sitting in distress, grieving for his nephew. The more he thought, the more anger packed his heart, like a poisoned gun lodged in the yaksha's breast. When dawn brightened, he came to bathe.

He bathed his body in divine Anotat water, clear and clean, scattered like rain. He put on sweet perfume mixed with pollen of flowers. His trousers had curved dragon-entwined edges; his green cloth was plantain-colored, interwoven with gold. The side-panels were swan-vines, splendid, and the hems had curling leaf-stem patterns. He wore armor for battle, with a crystal and ruby breast-band. Directional plaques, breastplate, and vine-chains adorned him; gold bracelets and engraved armlets shone. He wore crested rings with divine rubies on all ten fingers, a jeweled crown, earrings, flower ornaments, and shining diamond ear-pieces. Twenty hands took divine weapons, discus, jeweled mace, bow, and arrows. Powerful as Thao Wetsuwan, he walked to mount the victory-chariot.

O the chariot, the battle-chariot: its crystal wheel-rims were splendid, its curved yoke and pole graceful, its receding jeweled throne had patterned panels. It was adorned with praying gods and Garudas seizing nagas, standing firm, like the chariot of a universal emperor, four-faced and as beautiful as Indra's mansion. It was yoked with four thousand royal lions. Lothan held the bow and drove in swift competition, as fast as Garuda flies. The tall ornaments were all complete for the chariot. Pennant-flags waved their tips; victory-flags led the army. Pipes and gongs thundered against the mountain, and dust hid the sun. The demon host shouted to raise the omen, loud and tumultuous, as the troops hurried and drove the royal chariot on.

When they arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set it in the great Garuda battle-formation, making it firm to wait for the monkey army.

Then Phra Rama of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow, when the sun's light had gone and the moon had risen above Sattaphan, lay upon the golden couch. Stars filled the sky and shone brightly. The righteous lord pondered how to destroy the base and wicked asura-demons, to end all those vile enemies, and he could not sleep. When birds flew and cried and golden light shone across the sky, he bathed, adorned himself, and came out before the victory-pavilion.

All the monkey ministers and soldiers, great and small, were present. Just then he heard the fierce sound. The lord gave royal command: "Listen, Phiphek the yaksha. Who has raised today's warriors? Is it Thotsakan the demon lord, or some asura kindred and ally?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord bowed his head to receive the royal command and calculated the triple-eyed omen.

Counting from sun to moon and dividing without error, he knew clearly and without doubt. He bowed and answered: "The omen says that it is not the Solar Line, kin, friends, or yaksha allies. It is the lord of Lanka himself, the asura who is commander of the army."

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard Phiphek the astrologer. The lord commanded the son of the Sun: "Arrange the monkey troops, fierce and strong in power. We will go out to fight Thotsakan the asura."

Then Sukhrip, noble monkey lord, received Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and came out.

He arranged the monkey Nilnon to command seven oceans as the vanguard. The side-guard was the divine son of Vayu, with ten oceans of monkey troops. The royal army was twenty oceans, skilled in war, fierce and battle-brave. Angkhot, fierce in power, was quartermaster, commanding ten oceans of monkeys. The rear guard was seven oceans of warriors, with noble Chomphuphan as chief. The protecting wings, blocking corps, and victory corps were all arrayed fully according to battle order. All held divine weapons, brandishing them wildly, each displaying fierce power while waiting for the discus-armed lord to go.

Then radiant Phra Narai of the Solar Line invited his life-sharing younger brother and went to the bathing place.

Water scattered like rain from fragrant lotuses. He wore perfume mixed with flowers. The elder brother's divine cloth was purple, floating with lion-king designs; the younger brother's cloth had dragon edges and dancing kinnara patterns. Their side-panels and hems adorned their garments. Each wore three chains, directional plaques, and engraved breastplates, with diamond armlets and gold bracelets. Their rings were city-priced jewels in Garuda settings; their nine-jewel crowns shone bright. They wore great earrings, ear-pieces, and beautiful flower ornaments. The elder brother carried the Brahmastra, and Phra Lak took the bright Phlai Wat arrow. The two were more beautiful than all on earth and came one after the other to mount the chariot.

O the royal chariot of Indra: its red-jeweled wheels were splendid, its three curved yokes soft and graceful, with curling vines, standards, and patterned panels. On the first tier Garudas seized proud serpents; on the second, gods prayed in shining rows; on the third, kinnari women danced; the jeweled pavilion was lovely with patterns. It was yoked with divine horse-princes whose terrible power surpassed the lion-king. Phra Lak sat in front with joined hands, and Matali drove like the blowing wind. Royal umbrellas and fly-whisks adorned it, and rows of pennants fluttered. The escorting host was dense; drums and gongs answered in uproar. The divine steeds cried thunderously; the troops shouted in concert with horn music. Dust covered the sun as the army hurried the Vejayanta onward.

When they arrived and saw Thotsakan's army set firm at the foot of the great mountain, he halted the great army to observe the asura's strength.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the monkey host coming. Ten mouths clenched their teeth. The yaksha displayed his fierce power, stamped his foot, and gave royal command to rush the troops into battle.

Then the asura warriors brandished weapons like doomsday fire and rushed in to attack the monkeys.

The left and right wings flanked together, storming wildly without pause. They shot, stabbed, and cut in battle; the more they died, the more they pressed in.

Then the forest-monkey troops split the army into crow-wings and struck in together.

Monkey troops and yaksha troops crashed into one another. In confusion, some fled and some pursued, group by group and band by band, entering the fight for victory. Officers and commoners died scattered over the earth.

Then the demon-yaksha troops fought close, not thinking of life, and pursued and struck the monkeys.

They fought, cut, and stabbed in confusion. Some shot arrows. Each side brave, each side bold, they fought hand to hand without easing.

Then the firm monkey troops fought close, not thinking of life. They clenched their teeth and charged the asuras.

Yaksha troops lost heads and bodies, broke and died scattered through the whole forest. The monkeys pressed and charged until they reached the front of the asura's chariot.

Then Thotsakan the yaksha saw his troops dying senselessly, and his anger burned like doomsday fire. He stamped his foot and roared, his voice filling the forest like thunder. Brandishing weapons like smoky flame, he ordered Lothan to drive the chariot into the battle for victory.

He struck left and right in wild confusion, hurling every kind of weapon. The monkeys broke and scattered by the asura's fierce power.

Then the lord who blots the three worlds, seeing Thotsakan the lord of Lanka drive the chariot in to attack and the monkeys breaking, dying, and collapsing by the yaksha's power, seized a powerful sacred arrow and released it.

Its sound was like a cutting wind. The mountain and universe shook. The royal-lion charioteer died, and the victory-chariot broke apart.

Then brave Raphanasura fell from his broken chariot to the earth. The demon lord burned with anger like doomsday fire. Twenty hands brandished weapons; twenty eyes were like suns. He stamped his foot, clenched his teeth, and rushed into battle.

Boldly he seized the chariot's curved pole and brandished arrows wildly, beautiful like Rahu in terrible power seizing the moon's chariot at night.

Then blessed and radiant Phra Hariwong, with his life-sharing younger brother, charged in to attack the yaksha.

Phra Rama stepped on the yaksha lord's right knee, while created Phra Lak leapt and set his foot on the left knee. They turned and seized one another back and forth.

Then Raphanasura the yaksha alone received and seized the two kings, guarding and fighting hand to hand.

He struck left and right in wild confusion with weapons and did not retreat. Quick and agile at every turn, the asura never eased his hand.

Then the two Solar Line lords, bearers of the arrow, fought heavily and fiercely, pressing and attacking the asura hand to hand.

Phra Narai struck with his royal arrow, hitting the ten-faced yaksha. By Phra Chakri's power, he flew to the foot of the mountain.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line was furious like fire. The asura seized an arrow and released it.

It became nine kinds of weapons, falling everywhere beyond counting. It struck the forest-monkey army, and they died scattered everywhere.

Then Phra Narai, lord of the Solar Line, saw Thotsakan's arrow become weapons killing the monkeys, who lay dead all over the earth. The incarnate lord drew his royal arrow to the string, aimed to attack, and released it by power.

It struck the demon army, killing them in great number. All the monkeys who had died regained life.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king saw the human's powerful arrow destroy his army. He seized the jeweled Moli discus, whose power was like the shining sun, aimed to end the lives of the two kings, and hurled it by power.

Its sound thundered through the whole sky; its light shone bright. It blazed like fire and hovered before the four-armed lord.

Then the battle-skilled incarnate lord saw the yaksha lord throw the discus to attack. He seized the Brahmastra and released it.

It pursued and destroyed the sharp, powerful discus, shattering it so it could not withstand the force. The demon army died throughout the battle host, and the arrow went on to strike Thotsakan.

Then the ten-headed one of the Solar Line, struck by the arrow, nearly lost his life. The yaksha recited a powerful spell.

When he had completed it seven times, he rubbed it over the whole yaksha body. The arrow fell loose from his body. The asura was shaken and afraid. Just then the sun set, slipping down behind the great mountain. He ordered the great army withdrawn and returned to Lanka city.

Then radiant Phra Narai of the Solar Line, when the ten-headed asura had withdrawn his army back to Lanka, mounted the royal chariot with Phra Lak, his younger brother, and had the army move back into the splendid pavilion.

Then the battle-skilled ten-headed king, when he reached Lanka city, went up into the victory-palace.

He lowered himself upon the throne-seat, with all the beautiful women, great and small, sitting close before him, like stars surrounding the moon in cloud. He spoke sweetly to lovely Montho: "You, heart of my eyes, who have shared suffering and heat with me: today I raised the army, the countless demon ministers and battle troops, and went out to storm and fight the enemies. I was struck by an arrow and bruised through all my body; our soldiers died beyond count. The enemy side has power. It is very hard to think how to kill them. Whichever Solar Line lord I appoint to go out and fight has only defeat from those wretches. My heart is heavy beyond measure. You who have wisdom, think and advise me. Who remains anywhere who could destroy the enemy?"

Then Montho, highest in compassion, heard her husband's command. The lovely lady bowed her fingers in reverence, prostrated at the lotus feet, and reported to the yaksha king: "Your beloved life-sharing friend, mighty in great power, rules the city of Chakkrawan, and is named Satlung the yaksha. With him is Trimekha, your nephew, son of Tri Sian the demon lord. Each of them bears strength and power; their courage is famous through the ten directions. Send to invite them here to plan together and help attack the enemy."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard his chief queen and rejoiced as if he had gained a heavenly mansion. Stroking her back, he said: "Life of my life, beloved above all, it is true. My friend and nephew, alas, how could I forget them? Only now that you have said it do I think of them. As for this war with the humans and forest-monkeys, bold as they are, we shall see." Speaking with delight, he clapped his hands and laughed happily. Caressing the lovely woman, the yaksha entered sleep.

When the radiant sun rose and golden light shone in the sky, he bathed, put on his ornaments, and came out to the victory throne hall.

All the ministers, elder counselors, monkey-lords of the Solar Line, great and small, lay prostrate before him. The lord gave royal command to Paowanasun the yaksha lord: "Prepare a royal letter, written in proper form, to my brave friend in the city of Chakkrawan, saying that war has arisen in Lanka, with fierce fighting and killing. Invite my life-sharing friend to come help plan the destruction of the enemy. Then go find mighty Trimekha, son of Tri Sian the yaksha, my beloved nephew, and have him raise his army to help us."

Then diligent Paowanasun received the command, bowed, and the yaksha prepared the letter.

He inscribed it on a golden document according to the yaksha king's command, placed it in a shining jeweled box, and gave it to Kalasun the demon lord. Then he commanded Nonnasun the yaksha, wise and brave, to go find mighty Trimekha by the asura's royal order.

Then Kalasun and Nonnasun the yakshas received the letter and the ministerial command, raised their joined hands, and came out.

The two lords mounted two powerful and fierce horses, departed the city of Lanka, and split onto separate roads.
