Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixty-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Satlung of Chakkrawan receiving Thotsakan's plea, Nonnasun summoning Trimekha from Matchawari, Satlung and Trimekha arriving in Lanka and feasting with Thotsakan, the allied yaksha armies marching against Rama, Rama's battle with Satlung and Trimekha, Satlung's death by the Brahmastra, and Trimekha's flight to the naga realm before hiding inside a grain of sand near Mount Chakkrawan.

Translation

Satlung and Trimekha Come to Lanka

Then King Satlung the yaksha heard the great minister and gave command: "As for this friend of mine, is he well and at ease? For what purpose has he commanded you to come? It has been long since we saw one another."

Then Kalasun the diligent one heard, bowed his head in homage, and answered the king's command: "Your friend is not at ease. He suffers under the war that has come to kill him, and therefore he has sent me bearing a letter to attend Your Majesty's feet."

Then the great demon minister opened the casket, unfolded the letter, read it aloud, and presented it to the asura king.

"The royal letter of the lord of Brahma's line, crowned king of splendid Lanka, comes to the sovereign friend whose life is joined with his own. Now in Lanka, jewel-created royal city, hostile kings have come in danger: the two unrighteous humans, named Lak and Ram Rames, commanding many powerful monkeys. They bridged the sea-road, crossed with their troops, and came to do harm and attack the city. They have fought, pressed hard, and killed the yaksha kinsmen and royal line. The dead continue, wasting the capital, with soldiers and common troops alike. I myself have gone out to fight them twice. I was struck by arrows and nearly lost my life. Now my distress is beyond measure. I invite Your Majesty, my friend, foremost in masculine power and sacred might, to raise the hosts of yakshas and come consider how to break the enemy."

Then King Satlung the yaksha understood the letter from the friend whose life was joined with his own. The asura sat silent and thought: "The twenty-armed king has power that makes sky and earth shake. His force subdues every one of the three worlds; who does not wait to fight him? Who are these called Ram and Lak, proud of rank and so daring in heart? They are only humans. What fierce power could they have? Good. We shall see one another. I will cut off their heads, slice their flesh as food for vultures and crows, and do the same to their monkeys." Speaking so, he gave command to his demon ministers skilled in war: "Quickly arrange the army. I will go fight the enemy."

Then Virunkasur the yaksha received the command of the lord who ruled the earth, offered joined hands, and came out.

He levied troops skilled in war, choosing only fierce and brave warriors. One band had fishing-cat faces and held biting stones, standing firm. One had lion faces and held shields, swinging swords like turning wheels. One had bear faces with bared teeth and carried bows with poisoned arrows. One band had tomcat faces, held raised glaives, and tucked knives at the waist. One had rhinoceros faces and displayed power, holding clubs and rolling their eyes. One band had buffalo faces and held lifted lances. One had crow faces, carrying spears and moving in display. Each brandished weapons; their fierce power seemed enough to overturn the earth. Jeweled chariots were readied in splendor, and officers and common soldiers waited for the asura king to proceed.

Then King Satlung the yaksha, when the forces had been arranged, came to the bathing place.

He bathed and washed, delighting the body. Sweet fragrant water was sprinkled over him. He put on perfume mixed with flowers until the scent soaked all his limbs. His trousers had swan-scroll curved edges, and his cloth was figured with royal lions. His fluttering hem and side-panel were jeweled vines. His upper garment was velvet with floating roundels. Jeweled armor, breastplate, and chain were set over him; directional plaques and pendants hung in gold. Bracelets, armlets, and gemmed rings flashed before the eye. His crown, ear-pieces, and pearl ornaments hung with garlands of jeweled gold and flowers. He took the powerful sacred arrow and mounted his splendid royal chariot.

O the chariot, the battle-chariot: its wheel-rims were of nine bright gems; hub, pole, and yoke were graceful with three curved tips. Its pavilion and throne seemed to float. Images of praying gods and Garudas clutching nagas stood with hanging ornaments. The jeweled side-pillars and leaf-work alternated in gems, and the finials rose in graceful scrolls. It was yoked with royal lions. The charioteer drove it leaping like a turning wheel. Tall ornaments, waving fans, sun-standards, tiered peacock umbrellas, and gold flags surrounded it. Victory drums, rolling drums, and foreign trumpets sounded in great thunder. The demon troops shouted in proud battle-joy and hurried the army forward.

Then Nonnasun the yaksha hurried his mind-born horse across the great river of ocean.

When he reached Matchawari, the well-disposed demon lord dismounted from his magic horse and entered the splendid throne hall.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of King Trimekha, skilled in war, and said: "In the royal city of Lanka there are enemies coming to attack: Lak and Ram, the two human brothers, commanding powerful and fierce monkeys. They have pressed and killed the Solar-Brahma line; countless lives have been destroyed. The twenty-armed lord, your uncle, is troubled and grieved. He has sent me to invite Your Majesty to go to the city of Lanka."

Then Trimekha of the Solar Line heard Nonnasun the asura and was angry like the fire at the end of an age. "Ha! Humans and those monkeys come in arrogance and pride, daring so boldly, with no fear of the Solar-Brahma line. I will burn them until their lives end." Having spoken, he gave royal command to his diligent great minister: "Quickly arrange the asura-yakshas. We will go help defend Lanka."

Then Virunrat the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, offered homage, and hurried out.

He levied the bold fourfold army into a great battle procession. Elephant lords rode elephants within the ranks, holding goads and firearms. Horse lords rode horses and carried spears, driving and turning like wheels. Chariot lords yoked chariots to fierce tigers, while Lothan held a mace in his hand. Commanders inspected and prepared the warriors, all fierce as lions in power, holding spears, swords, long darts, lances, beams, and iron hammers in tumult. Each displayed bravery, leaping and brandishing weapons in great confusion. They crowded the whole earth, each waiting for the asura king to proceed.

Then Trimekha, mighty in sacred power, at the dawn when the sun's light brightened, came to bathe in the water.

He bathed and washed his royal body, wearing fragrant streams of pollen. His trousers were brocade with curved edges, and his cloth was udumbara-colored with a broad middle panel. The fluttering hem and side-panel were swan-vines; his upper garment had ringed scrolls. Diamond armor, breastplate, and chain were set across him, with directional plaques and gold pendants. His armlets were gold dragons, and emerald rings flashed. He wore a great crown, flower garlands, earrings, and ear-pieces. He fastened on a powerful mace, held bow and arrow in his right hand, came down from the splendid jeweled seat, and walked to mount his elephant.

O the elephant, the war-elephant, high, mighty, and fierce in strength: its trunk swung, its tusks tossed, it rushed with wild pride, kicking, trampling, striking, and stabbing. It was of the race of Chaddanta elephants, roaring and swinging its streaming temples. Its harness was gold set with red rubies, and a gold net with gems covered its face. The forehead-strap was bright with fragrant cords; jeweled lotuses and tassels hung beside both ears. The rear mahout moved the goad, waiting, and drove it at a slow walk like a wind. Royal umbrellas, fly-whisks, rows of flags, and tiered parasols adorned it. The fierce troops were packed close; drums and gongs answered in tumult. The army shouted to raise the omen; the world shook in uproar. A dark haze covered above them as they hurried the troops across the ocean shore.

They marched along forest roads, sharing the great way. When they met the army of mighty Chakkrawan, they had it wait and then advance behind them.

Then King Satlung the yaksha saw Trimekha's asura army. The demon king rejoiced and was glad. He hurried his fourfold brave troops, a hundred thousand demon-yaksha soldiers, across fields and forest, and they entered the city of Lanka.

When they arrived, he halted the fourfold armies and set them on left and right. The two kings went together to the royal hall.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line saw his beloved life-sharing friend and his precious nephew come. He rejoiced as if he had gained the bright treasure of Lord Makkhawan. He came down from his shining jeweled seat to receive the two powerful asuras.

He led his friend's hand and brought him to share the radiant seat that shone to the heavens. They exchanged glad words, and the asuras bowed to one another.

Then Trimekha of the Solar Line bowed his head in homage before King Thotsakan the asura.

Then King Satlung the yaksha sat above the bright jeweled seat and asked: "These enemies who have raised war against us, how strong and brave are they? How many or few troops do they have, that they dare despise the asuras?"

Then Raphanasura the yaksha heard his friend's question and quickly answered: "This war is very heavy. The humans are bold and brave. They bear arrows fierce as doomsday fire and are hard to withstand. Their troops too have fierce power, countless as the sea without decrease. Phiphek, my younger brother of the same womb, has cut himself off and joined the enemy. Every stratagem and deep war-plan of ours he tells to them. The Solar Line and my kin have been destroyed. In distress, I therefore sent to invite you."

Then King Satlung the yaksha heard Thotsakan the asura and answered: "Tch, humans and forest-monkeys have come to despise the yaksha Solar Line. Good; why should that matter? This time we shall see one another. Though the enemies have strength from bow, arrow, and sword, we will not let them keep it long. We will break them, cut down their whole victorious army, and even Phiphek the asura I will bind and bring back. My friend, do not be anxious. What is this little war?"

Then the ten-faced yaksha heard it like divine water bathing his body. The demon lord laughed, rejoiced, and clapped his hands sharply. "This time the hostile kings will be shattered by the power of my beloved friend." Then he turned and spoke to Trimekha, his powerful nephew: "You, of the yaksha Solar Line, how will you help your uncle break them?"

Then Trimekha, well-disposed, heard the king's words, bowed, and answered: "Your nephew is counted among brave men of the splendid Solar-Brahma yaksha line. A war no greater than this is not anything to fear. Even if they have power through the fierce sacred arrow, I will not let them trouble the dust beneath Your Majesty's feet. I ask leave to go fight them."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line heard his royal nephew's words and rejoiced as if he had gained sixteen treasures. He stroked his back and proclaimed: "You who bear power like fierce fire, my child, preserve your name and make your fame resound through the ages." Having spoken, he commanded the demon ministers: "Quickly prepare delicious royal food and all strong drink. Present it to both lords of the Solar Line and feast every fourfold troop, great and small, so all may be full and glad this very moment."

Then Mahothon the demon-yaksha received the command of the lord who ruled the earth, offered joined hands, and came out.

When he reached the guard-house of the palace blade corps, he ordered the officers on left and right to write notices according to the royal command and direct the inner and outer demon cooks.

Then the great palace officers heard clearly without doubt and wrote the notices as the minister had ordered.

Then the demon cooks received the notices, distributed supplies in a commotion, and assigned duties according to the offices.

The inner cooks prepared the royal dishes and set them out in busy confusion, with victorious liquors and every sort of savory and sweet food complete.

Then the diligent women attendants brought the dishes in close ranks, one after another, and presented them to the demon lord of Lanka.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line invited his life-sharing friend and his nephew to eat and drink.

Then the young palace women, slender, graceful, and fair, came and crouched in attendance on the asura. Some poured liquor and presented it to the yaksha lord. Some sat waving fans, fly-whisks moving lightly before the demon king.

The women entertainers sang in plaintive sweetness, their voices ringing clear. Deep and high notes, drawn-out airs and variations, played in the hall; plucked and bowed instruments joined in rhythm. Then the melody shifted to Thong Yoi, the flute sweet as music of heaven. Krachappi, fiddle, and saw filled the air, their joined sound striking the heart.

The dancers moved in flowing dance, extending arms, pacing, and turning their shoulders. They crossed, changed places, and circled close beside the demon king. Then they cast both soft arms outward, changing into the pose of Phra Rot casting a letter. The young women moved in paired lines, glancing sideways with art. Then their hands curved, twisted, and bent, with coy gestures and feigned retreat. Every woman was gentle, graceful, and beautiful, serving the lord of Lanka.

Then the women cooks on left and right finished arranging delicious food and bore it in together.

They set the dishes in order beside trays of rice and distilled liquor, with buffalo salad, fried bull meat, and roast elephant spread everywhere.

Then the troops, great and small, who had come from the two mighty cities, officers and commoners alike, rejoiced. They sat in circles, drank liquor, ate side-dishes, and laughed loudly. They shouted, sang verse, danced, and played shamelessly. Some groups were drunk beyond measure, scolding, striking, and quarreling in uproar. Some teased the demon serving-women, jostling and grabbing in confusion.

Then the lord of Chakkrawan and Trimekha, fierce demon lord, were happy as they ate. Watching the inner dancers, their hearts were greatly delighted. They were entertained, their spirits pleased, and desire pressed hard upon their hearts. Longing for form, taste, and sound, they almost could not hold back their minds. Both asura lords were dazed, entranced, and lost in sense.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line, when he had finished eating the grain-food, spoke fair words: "This time I will be freed from sorrow and live cool and happy in company. All of Lanka city will have peace through the fierce power of my beloved friend and my victorious nephew. Their names will be renowned through the three worlds. At the mere naming of them, enemies will tremble. They are fit to be pillars of the world."

Then King Satlung the yaksha smiled and told Trimekha the asura: "Tomorrow we will raise the army out to fight the two noble humans. You, whose power shines, should advance and be stationed behind me. Do not let the hostile kings turn back and strike us from the rear." Having spoken, the two kings went to the asura army.

When they arrived, he commanded the demon ministers: "Prepare the fourfold army, and have it ready to advance in formation."

Then the two diligent ministers received the command of the yaksha kings, bowed, and hurried away.

On Chakkrawan's side, they inspected the troops, fierce, strong, and skilled in battle, arraying the fourfold army: elephants, chariots, horses, and foot. All were proud and eager for war, fierce as royal lions. Each rushed to attack, holding swords, tridents, spears, maces, and every weapon. Some held spears, swords, bows, and guns, covering the ground beyond counting. The powerful Matchawari warriors, all strong fighting men, formed the rear guard. The harsh, firm demon troops gripped every weapon and waited for the two yaksha lords to proceed.

Then Satlung and Trimekha the yakshas, when the sun's light rose, came to wash in the water.

The two kings bathed and washed. Fragrant streams of pollen spread scent. Their trousers were patterned vines like flying swans, with different red-gem curved edges. Their cloths differed, purple and pale green, cut through with gold and mirrored leaf-work. Their upper garments had jeweled armor and chains, breast-bands, and splendid gold settings. Directional plaques were set with pearls; coral breastplates shone bright. Nine-gem armlets were graceful, and gold bracelets were shaped like Vasuki. They wore great rings in Garuda settings, crowns of shining divine gems, ear-pieces, and ruby earrings. Both were beautiful like Wetsuwan. Each fastened on a mace, took arrows, and moved with swanlike steps, surrounded by the fourfold host, to mount the divine chariot.

O the royal chariot: its wheel-rims were made of pearls; its pole and yoke were all coral. Red flags rose above the curved tips. It was yoked with four thousand royal lions, and Lothan held bow and arrow in his hand. He shouted commands and drove, carrying it leaping through the sky like a wind. Trimekha the asura rode a great elephant, standing firm. It was dangerous, trained for war, stamping, swinging its trunk, and raging proudly. Its trunk tossed, its tusks lifted, and its roar thundered. Its harness was gold with golden stars, and a gold net covered its face in splendor. Tall ornaments adorned both armies; victory flags for the field rose everywhere. Drums sounded through the groves and forest ranges, and the rear army advanced behind in haste.

When they reached the battlefield, they halted the great army, setting it in two divisions to wait for victory over the enemy.

Then on the side of radiant Phra Harirak, when evening darkened and the sun's light was gone, he entered above the splendid couch. A gentle wind blew and carried the scent of flowers, fresh and sweet, spreading fragrance into the nose. Crickets and cicadas called through the grove, their clear sound lovely to hear, as if palace women were playing music together. It eased his solitude and lightened his troubled heart. The king was at peace; cool rain touched his limbs, and Phra Chakri slept deeply.

When the sun shone bright and golden light filled the sky, he bathed, adorned himself, and came out before the victory-pavilion.

The eighteen crowned monkey lords, the son of Vayu, Sukhrip, and the great soldiers crouched in attendance everywhere, like stars surrounding the moon in the sky. Just then he heard the sound of shouting, shaking the emerald mountains. He gave gracious command: "Listen, Phiphek the asura. Whose army has advanced today, its troops shouting in every direction? Is it Thotsakan, lord of Lanka, or some other asura?"

Then Phiphek, well-disposed, heard the king's words and at once took the omen.

Knowing clearly without doubt in his spirit, the asura bowed at the lord's feet and reported: "The army that has advanced today is not Thotsakan the asura. It is King Satlung, demon lord of the Chakkrawan realm, the beloved life-sharing friend of Lanka's yaksha king. With him is the three-headed asura's son, named Trimekha the yaksha, lord of Matchawari city and royal nephew of the demon king."

Then Phra Chakrit, famed in power through every direction, heard Phiphek the astrologer and commanded the son of the Sun: "Prepare the monkey army, fierce and strong. We will go destroy the yakshas who are thorns to the earth."

Then noble Sukhrip, monkey lord, bowed to receive Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and came out.

He levied the monkey kings and monkey lords, choosing only bold and brave fighters. Each was of divine lineage, with brilliance like the sun. They could hide their bodies and vanish; they could walk on water and dive through earth as thought. Some bands could display power by stretching their arms and scooping the moon and stars away. Some could travel through the sky, cross wide Chomphu Island, and step to Mount Meru. These were the troops who followed the lord to subdue the age; every one was enduring and hardy, never shrinking from breaking an enemy in battle. All held every kind of weapon, raising and brandishing them in uproar, loud enough to make the earth sink, while they waited for the discus-armed lord to proceed.

Then Phra Kritsanurak, skilled in war, and his powerful younger brother walked to the bathing place.

The golden lotus crystal pipes were opened, and water scattered like misting rain. They rubbed on divine fragrant essences mixed with nine-gold and red-gold flowers. Their trousers had curved dragon edges as if dragons played in the ocean. Their cloths differed in color and had Garuda-vines; the fluttering hems were joined with side-panels. They put on upper garments of golden-vine openwork, breastplates set with red diamonds, directional plaques, engraved chains, gold bracelets shaped as curled dragons, and armlets set with emerald and ruby. Their yellow-diamond rings were in Garuda settings; their crowns were jeweled gold with ear-pieces, earrings, garlands, and flower ornaments. Each hand took a shining arrow. Beautiful like sun and moon, they came to mount the victory chariot.

O the Vejayanta chariot: its wheel-rims and hubs were splendid with chased gold. Pole and yoke curved softly; the tiered throne was jeweled with patterned panels. Its pavilion was all gem-work, adorned with images of praying gods. The six heavens and the zodiac had nothing equal to it; it was fit for a universal emperor to ride. It was yoked with divine horses, fierce in power beyond royal lions. The younger brother sat in front with joined hands, and Matali drove like a wind. Royal umbrellas and fly-whisks surrounded it; peacock parasols shaded the sun's glare. Curved horns and foreign trumpets played, gongs answered, and victory drums thundered. The Vayu-born one waved the victory flag. The great army shouted in fierce tumult. As the sun shone bright in the sky, they hurried the chariot forward.

Then King Satlung the yaksha, standing in his chariot in the middle of the road, glanced aside and saw the humans raising countless monkey troops. He commanded his loyal ministers to hurry the army forward and attack.

Then Virunkasur the yaksha received the asura king's command and drove the troops into battle.

Then the demon troops skilled in war each displayed fierce power like burning fire and entered, striking the monkey army into confusion.

Some lit matchlocks with gold pans and released volleys from small and large guns. Smoke rose thickly and hid the dawn light; shouting thundered in turmoil.

Then the front monkey troops split their forces to receive them like crow wings and struck from both sides.

Demon troops died beyond counting, by the hard force of fierce power. The monkeys chased, killed, struck, and cut; the yakshas broke and died senselessly.

Then King Trimekha the yaksha, standing on his elephant amid the army, saw the Chakkrawan city forces broken, routed, and piled with dead, while the monkeys chased up to the front. Furious like doomsday fire, the demon lord cried out: "Ho, Virunrat the yaksha! Drive them in to receive the enemy with courage. Enclose the monkeys that are chasing us and kill the whole victorious army."

Then Virunrat, the great soldier, received the command and ran swiftly to drive the troops into attack.

Then the asura-yaksha troops each displayed power and surged in against the monkeys.

Some slashed, stabbed, and fired guns; some used biting-stone matchlocks, bows, and arrows. They hurled darts, javelins, and spears, fighting hand to hand in hard assault.

Then the strong monkey troops rushed whirling into battle and fought the asura army.

The monkey soldiers chased and seized weapons. They fought fiercely, pressed, and killed. The demons died and broke in tumult, unable to stand before the monkeys.

Then King Satlung, skilled in war, and powerful Trimekha saw the demon troops breaking and dying senselessly. The asuras shook with anger. They drove chariot and elephant out together, chasing and attacking the forest-monkeys.

Satlung hurled lances, and monkeys died beyond counting. Trimekha drove the great elephant, trampling and goring in confusion.

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, brave soldiers, saw the two yakshas driving in and killing the monkeys in ruin. The two leaders burned with anger like age-ending fire, their hands itching to kill. They brandished weapons like doomsday flame and leapt into battle.

Sukhrip climbed the elephant's tusk, swinging his victorious sword. Hanuman mounted the asura's chariot and stabbed the charioteer to death.

Then King Satlung, brave in heart, and King Trimekha, victorious and skilled, received the two monkeys. Satlung struck the son of Vayu by the strength of fierce battle-power; Trimekha struck the son of the Sun with his mighty bow.

Then Sukhrip and Hanuman, brave soldiers, received the blows and fought the asuras, dodging back and forth with quickness. Hanuman rushed and kicked the royal chariot until it shattered, unable to withstand his strength. Sukhrip broke the great elephant's neck, and it fell dead at the same moment.

Then Satlung and Trimekha, though strong, lost their footing in battle and fell from chariot and elephant. Furious, they stamped their feet, each seized bow and arrow, drew with mighty strength, and released them by power.

They struck the monkey army. The dead lay piled without number, and the troops scattered and fled in every direction while the demons followed and attacked.

Then Phra Rama, radiant in auspicious glory, and his life-sharing younger brother saw the arrows released by the two yakshas strike the monkey troops, leaving them dead and scattered across the forest. The two powerful lords seized arrows, raised them, and released them.

They struck the fourfold troops of both armies, which fell dead in ruin beyond counting. The arrow of the three-world lord struck Satlung the asura. The arrow of Phra Lak of the Solar Line struck Trimekha the yaksha, and both fell to the earth by the power of the two kings.

Then Satlung and Trimekha the yakshas were struck by arrows and bruised all over their bodies, as if they would lose their lives. The two yakshas raised their hands above their heads, worshiped the grace of creating Brahma, steadied their bodies, clenched their teeth, and recited powerful spells.

After seven rounds were complete, they blew over their bodies and rubbed themselves all over. The arrows came loose from their limbs. The asuras, angry and furious, with eyes red like shining fire, drew arrows, set them on the string, aimed at the two kings, and released them.

King Satlung's powerful arrow became weapons falling beyond count. The arrow of Trimekha, demon lord skilled in victory, became doomsday fire. It burned around the monkey army, hotter than sunlight. Flames turned and crowded with smoke, by the power of the mighty yakshas.

Then the two royal lords of the Solar Line saw the two yakshas release arrows that became fierce flame and bright weapons scattered in the middle of the army, while the monkeys ran in confusion. Phra Lak and the discus-armed lord seized fierce arrows together, laid them to the strings, aimed to kill the two demons, and released them by power, beautiful as sun and moon.

The powerful arrow of Phra Lak became a hundred thousand showers of rain. It fell and quenched the fire that had been burning, then struck the demon troops. Both yaksha armies died by its bold sacred power. The Brahmastra of the incarnate lord ground the demons' weapons to dust. All the monkeys who had died returned alive, and then it struck King Satlung dead by Phra Chakri's fierce power.

Then Trimekha the yaksha saw King Satlung the asura's life end and breath cease, together with the horses, chariots, elephants, and hundreds of thousands of brave soldiers. Alone, he could not withstand the enemy. The demon lord was frightened in heart, grieving for his life. He knew he could not stand against such power. "I must flee, to escape the danger of these mighty humans." Having thought this, he raised his hands above his head and worshiped the grace of Brahma. He gathered his mind, recited magic knowledge, and hid his body.

When seven rounds were complete, his shadow disappeared and his body could not be seen. He pushed down through the earth and fled to the underworld of Badan.

When he reached the naga realm, broad, vast, and surpassingly splendid, he entered the gleaming jeweled hall and saw King Kala Naga. Sitting down, he spoke fair words: "Listen, powerful lord. I have fled Phra Rama's arrow, hoping to save my life. I ask to take refuge with you. Please help preserve the yaksha's life. If you show compassion and kindness, that merit will be beyond measure."

Then the renowned naga king heard the name of Phra Chakri and every hair on his body stood in fear. He said: "Listen, demon lord. Do you not understand? Mighty Phra Rama is the lord who bears Garuda. The gods invited him to incarnate from the Milky Ocean. He bears three arrows as weapons to subdue evil in the world. Why did you go contend in power with Phra Chakrit, lord of vast divine majesty, great support of the earth? If you flee his arrow and hide here, you will bring death on us all. Asura, go at once."

Then powerful Trimekha the yaksha heard King Kala Naga, and his breast burned as if filled with fire. Suffering and grieving deeply, the demon sighed and pleaded: "I have fled danger and came down here with the hope of escaping death, entrusting my body to this place. If you will not keep me in your city, I will take leave. Tell me, with compassion, where I might hide and escape Phra Rama's arrow that follows to kill me, as if you were giving me life."

Then glorious King Kala Naga heard the asura's pleading words, and compassion rose in his mind. He said: "If you would flee the arrow of the four-armed lord, create a form and hide inside a grain of sand in the ocean, near Mount Chakkrawan, on the shining jeweled shore. There you may escape Phra Narai's Brahmastra and survive this death."

Then powerful Trimekha the yaksha heard King Kala Naga and rejoiced. He said: "I thank you for what you have told me. May merit answer you in days to come. I ask now to take leave." Having spoken, the asura hurried away.

When he arrived, he parted the water near the slope of great Mount Chakkrawan, descended to the ocean floor, fixed his mind, and recited powerful spells.
