Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan's shame after the broken tunnel rite, his summons of Satthasur from Atsadong and Wirun Chambang from Charuek, their arrival and feast in Lanka, Phiphek's warning that Satthasur can call weapons down from heaven while Wirun Chambang can vanish with his horse, and Hanuman's plan to deceive Satthasur by sending Angkhot and five hundred monkeys into the clouds to intercept the heavenly weapons.

Satthasur and Wirun Chambang Are Summoned

Then Raphanasura the yaksha, after the ritual rite was lost, sank in grief. The more he thought, the more resentment pressed tight in his mind, like a poisoned gun lodged in his breast and impossible to draw out. In his hands he lifted the noble lady and flew back to the asura residence.

When he arrived, he entered the palace, radiant and shining to the sky, and laid the chief queen upon the bright jeweled couch.

He reclined upon the bed, his hand laid across the yaksha's face, silent, thinking of the enemy. Sorrow multiplied and crowded him until his body was stunned. His heart was blocked and pained, like a poisoned gun fixed in his breast with no relief. Because love was lost, resentment and shame were extreme; all three worlds would despise him. He lay still, turning against the pillow, neither bathing nor eating. Until the sun's light was gone, the king did not come out to his ministers.

Then the palace women on left and right saw the asura king lying with his hand over his face in grief. He did not go to bathe or eat, and did not enjoy any delight or pleasure. His manner differed from every day before, and the attendants were startled and afraid. Each officer came in, checking and preparing every large and small thing, sitting neat and ready to serve, fearing the danger of the asura king.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the Solar Line lay in his bedchamber, the yaksha's resentment multiplied and his grief was boundless. Reclining with hand across his face, he brooded in sorrow over the enemies who had come to kill, pressing hard and destroying the asura line. Many asuras had died, together with horses, chariots, elephants, lion-elephants, and brave troops. Brilliant spells, all prepared and intended to win over the enemy, had failed because the foe had that wretch Phiphek; Phiphek had exposed every hidden thing. He had ruined the Solar-Brahma yaksha line, and even Brahma's Lanka would come to an end.

"Ah, alas, Phiphek! How could you not think of your own family? Wasted was our sharing the same womb. How can you count others better?" The more he thought, the more impossible thought became. His mind was crowded and hot like fire. He could not sleep deeply in the night, until the sun shone over sky and earth.

Then he thought of his friend, his death-friend whose life was joined with his own, named Satthasur, demon lord who ruled the city of Atsadong. His power was terrible and vast, subduing all ten directions. With him was his nephew Wirun Chambang, son of the asura King Thut. His knowledge was supreme; he was foremost among men, able to hide his body and vanish completely. His power subdued the whole earth, and even Indra and Brahma feared his strength. "I will bring them to consult on the war and have the two lords raise armies to break, kill, and destroy the human brothers Ram and Lak, together with the hostile monkeys." Having thought this, he bathed, adorned himself, his face shining bright as the moon, left the glittering jeweled chamber, and went out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella, surrounded by asura-yakshas bowing everywhere. Then he gave royal command to Mahothon the demon-yaksha: "Prepare a royal letter to go to great Atsadong city. Invite Satthasur, my beloved friend, to come plan the killing of Ram, Lak, and the noble monkeys. Also seek out my life-sharing nephew, named Wirun Chambang, who shines with powerful might, is skilled in spells and magic, and bears great strength in the city of Charuek."

Then Mahothon the demon-yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, and came out from the royal hall.

He had scribes write the letter on shining gold leaf. When it was finished, he placed it in a bright jeweled casket and sealed it with the asura's royal seal. Then he ordered the minister named Nonthachit the yaksha to go to Atsadong city by royal command, and ordered Nonthaphairi to hurry to the royal seat of mighty Charuek, find the demon lord Wirun Chambang, and bring him quickly because the matter was urgent.

Then the two asura-yakshas received the letters and commands from the minister, sprang onto their horses, and hurried away.

On Nonthachit's side, the demon lord drove his horse at a great stride and reached victorious Atsadong, going straight into the city.

He dismounted from the noble horse, raised the splendid royal letter, and went to find the chief ministers at the audience hall.

He informed them: "In the royal city of Lanka, heavy war has arisen. The lord of the world has a royal letter and has sent me to attend the demon king."

Then the brave chief ministers learned the royal matter and hurried in together in alarm.

When they reached the appointed audience place, each bowed and reported: "The lord who rules the three worlds and holds victorious Lanka has issued a command. Nonthachit the yaksha has brought a royal letter to attend Your Majesty's feet."

Then King Satthasur the yaksha rejoiced at the mere naming of his friend, as if divine water had mingled with his heart. He gave royal command in gracious speech: "My beloved friend, whose heart is joined with mine, ruler of heavenly treasure, does he still prosper in wealth, increasing in welfare and supreme happiness? Are the royal Solar Line in Lanka, the ministers, common folk, and people free from illness and danger, complete in comfort and peace? Does rain fall well in its season, or has some harmful disaster arisen?"

Then well-disposed Nonthachit heard the king's words, bowed, and answered: "In the royal seat of Lanka, there is killing and fierce fighting. There is no happiness at any time. The matter is clearly written in the letter in every detail."

Then the brave Atsadong minister bowed down at the lotus feet, opened the casket, unfolded the letter, and read it at once.

"The royal letter of the ten-faced lord, crown of splendid Lanka, sends fair blessing and welfare, continuing royal friendship, to the supreme friend, foremost man whose life is joined with his own, ruler of Atsadong city, great support and supreme power. Now in Lanka, crown of the world, great war and battle have arisen because the bold humans Lak and Ram have gained monkey troops, counted as seventeen oceans, all shining in fierce power like lions. They bridged the road across the great sea and came to fight and kill without end, until the brave fourfold troops and the yaksha Solar Line were destroyed. No one is left to help in battle, and the enemy is bold and arrogant. I invite my life-sharing friend to come help plan the war and killing, so that honor and renowned fame may last until earth and sky end."

Then King Satthasur the yaksha understood the letter and burned like fire. The asura clenched his teeth, sprang up from the throne, and stamped his foot until the earth seemed to thunder. "Ha! Humans no bigger than flies. How much power could they have? I will cut them down and not leave even a crow's throat unavenged, all who came in that great army. In one moment, without difficulty, I will make those base wretches receive what they deserve." Having spoken, he ordered his commanders: "Arrange the brave troops. I will go help attend to royal business in the city of Lanka."

Then Nonthakasur the yaksha received the command, offered joined hands, and came out from the royal hall.

He levied the proud fourfold army, choosing only fierce and strong warriors. The elephant troops were of Chaddanta stock, their temples streaming, brave, with curved tusks. Mahouts held raised goads, joyful, fierce, and skilled in war. The horse troops were noble horses, proud in their fierce power. Riders drove them in formation, holding spears and brandishing them in display. The chariot ranks were sheathed in copper, carved with flashing vine-patterns, and yoked with tigers and lions. They moved with wheel-like speed, and every charioteer held a bow, standing firm and eager for battle. The foot soldiers, chosen and strong, filled ten oceans according to the rolls, each holding every kind of weapon. They readied themselves in tumult and confusion.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha, when the army was arranged, came to wash in water.

Water scattered like rain. He wore perfume, fragrant and sweet. His trousers were patterned with red gems, and his cloth showed kinnari dancing. His fluttering hem and side-panel were swan-vines, and his upper garment was green like young plantain. His breastplate and chain were yellow sapphire; his directional plaques were gold roundels. Gold bracelets and armlets were set with diamonds; rings in jeweled settings flashed. His faceted jeweled crown, flower garlands, earrings, and ear-pieces shone. Then he fastened on a diamond mace and took bow and arrow in his hand. Like mighty Thao Wetsuwan, he walked to mount the divine chariot.

O the chariot, the war-chariot: strange to behold, all bright with pearls. Its thunderous wheel-rims shook sky and earth, like Brahma's mansion in the sixteenth heaven. Its pole and yoke were softly curved; its floating throne glowed with emerald light. The graceful pavilion was cut with jeweled vine and leaf-scroll. It was yoked with royal lions, and the charioteer drove it like a turning wheel. Peacock umbrellas, waving fans, sun-standards, royal parasols, and victory flags streamed in the sky. Pipes, drums, and gongs joined their voices, resounding through the forest. The demon troops shouted in tumult and hurried the army onward.

Then on Nonthaphairi's side, skilled in battle, when he reached the royal city of Charuek, he dismounted from his noble horse. Just as the fierce royal nephew came out to the yaksha troops, he went ahead of the asura host into the jeweled throne hall.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of Wirun Chambang the yaksha and reported: "War has arisen in Lanka. Fighting and killing have gone on for a long time, until the Solar Line, kin, horses, chariots, elephants, and brave troops have been destroyed. The crowned lord of the demon city, ruler of the sky, is greatly troubled in heart. He has no one of equal heart and eye to raise troops and strike. Therefore he sent the demon lord Nonthachit bearing an auspicious letter to his life-sharing friend in great Atsadong, and sent me to invite Your Majesty to go to victorious Lanka."

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha heard Nonthaphairi the asura and was angry like the fire at the end of an age. "Tch! Humans and monkeys are proud, bold, and boastful, with no fear of the Solar-Brahma line. I will burn their whole victorious army." Having spoken, he gave royal command to his great minister: "Quickly levy ten oceans of battle-horses, and saddle fierce, strong Nilaphahu. I will go help my royal uncle kill the hostile kings."

Then Nonnasun the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal words, offered joined hands, and came out.

He levied a formation entirely of war-horses, choosing brave noble steeds. One division was black as crows, harnessed with gold-star ornaments; the riders wore black coats and black caps, holding spears and moving smoothly in display. One whole division was red, proud, joyful, and fierce; the riders wore red coats and caps, holding spears and brandishing them in turns. One division was sandal-colored, wheeling, leaping, and bounding; the riders wore gold-patterned coats and caps, holding guns and watching keenly, showing bravery. One division was pink-colored; the riders carried axes as weapons and wore pink coats and caps. The four divisions made ten oceans of troops. Fierce Nilaphahu was harnessed, and they readied themselves in uproar.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, when the sun's light rose at dawn, came to bathe in the water.

He bathed his body and wore fragrant water rich with pollen. He put on trousers with curved edges and an udumbara cloth with a broad middle panel. His side-panel and fluttering hem shimmered; his upper garment was set with rubies. Directional plaques, breastplate, and chains were worn with gold bracelets and gold-set armlets. He put on emerald rings on all ten fingers, a great crown with flowers, brilliant ear-pieces, and shining earrings. Then he fastened on a diamond mace, gripped a fierce shining spear, came down from the golden seat, and walked to mount his horse.

O the horse, the war-horse: leaping and fierce like a lion, of the powerful cloud-horse breed, black and graceful through its whole body. It was harnessed in gold set with gems, with bright tassels at both ears, joyful like the horse of Vayu, rough, fierce, and deep in power. Its footwork in and out was swift and agile, skilled in war; at the mere sound of the army shouting, it sprang toward the royal enemy. Royal umbrellas, fly-whisks, rows of paired flags, pipes, gongs, Malay drums, and victory flags adorned the host. The sound of horse-hooves shook and thundered, soldiers shouted in tumult, dust darkened the upper sky, and they drove in haste.

When they reached Lanka Island, their road joined the great way. They met the army of mighty Atsadong coming out from the forest edge. The horse commanders and strong cavalry hurried the troops; the two armies marched in order together, shouting thunderously along the road.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha, when he reached the city of Lanka, had the army halt. He set the troops in two crowded armies and kept them outside the city first, near the foot of the city wall, packed thick with soldiers.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha dismounted from his horse and went to offer joined hands to the demon king.

Then brave-hearted King Satthasur sat upon the divine jeweled chariot and saw his friend's nephew approaching. His shape was like Thotsakan's own. The yaksha king rejoiced greatly. The two kings greeted one another with delight and entered the city together.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king sat above the bright jeweled throne amid the demons. Seeing his friend Satthasur and his precious nephew Wirun Chambang, two lords whose lives were joined with his own, arrive together, he rejoiced as if someone had poured nectar into the yaksha's heart. He descended from the sky-bright jeweled seat to receive the two demon lords.

He led his friend's hand and brought him up to share the radiant seat beneath the divine white umbrella, with his nephew seated in order beside them. The three kings greeted and honored one another, bowing with happy hearts. Their faces shone clear like the moon, and the yakshas spoke together back and forth.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha spoke fair words, asking the lord of mighty Lanka: "This army that has come to war, what is its power? What kind of courage do its troops have, that they come to act without fear of us?"

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line heard his life-sharing friend, and the yaksha spoke: "The enemies have fierce power: the two humans and the forest-monkeys. We have fought one another, and the asuras defeated them many times by power and strategy. But I am helpless because of Phiphek the yaksha. He has become the enemy's spy and heart. Whenever we devise a deep battle stratagem, he resolves it and tells them the answer. Because of that vile wretch, the Solar Line and my kin have been destroyed. This time I am in distress, as if circling near a discus-blade. Therefore I sent to invite my beloved friend, bearer of sacred power, hoping to set Your Majesty's splendor as a jeweled umbrella above the yakshas' heads throughout the royal city of Lanka, helping plan the killing of the enemy."

Then King Satthasur the yaksha heard this and burned with multiplied resentment, as if fire had touched his heart. "Look at treacherous Phiphek, crooked against his elder brother. He deliberately destroyed his own lineage, that vile, base, unrighteous wretch. He has no pity for the splendid Solar-Brahma line whose power spreads through heaven. Good. We shall see one another. Do not think I will spare his life. I will kill both humans and monkeys and make my arrows drink their blood, until all those hostile fools who boast of their power are gone. My friend, do not be troubled. Why worry over these two noble humans? Leave this work to me. I will fight them until they become ash and dust, broken and ruined."

Then brave-hearted Raphanasura heard his friend's words and rejoiced greatly. He said to Wirun Chambang: "You who bear sacred strength and power, as for this war of Ram and Lak, you know it clearly in your heart. My friend has taken on the fighting. What does my nephew think? Will you go out with him and help seek victory, or what do you say?"

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha heard his royal uncle and answered the royal words: "This war is heavy because of Ram and Lak, the two noble brothers. They are strong with sacred arrows, and the monkey troops also have power. The royal kin of the Solar Line have fought proudly, but without shifting tactics by thought and stratagem, so they have been defeated by the enemy in everything. This time, when I go out to fight, your nephew will not act as before. I will hide my body and my thought-formed horse, hold the spear, and chase them down, stabbing the whole army dead. Why worry over humans and noble monkeys? Your Majesty, ruler of the earth, let there be no trouble beneath your dusty feet."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard his royal nephew, and it came to his heart like nectar from heaven. He stroked his back and proclaimed: "You whose power shakes the earth, with agile and clever wisdom, it is excellent that you can do this. When the war in Lanka is finished, your uncle will give you rule over the realm, succession in the yaksha Solar Line, and make you a pillar of the world." Having spoken, he gave command to Mahothon the demon-yaksha: "Prepare grain-food, delicious and sweet, with victorious drink, and present it to my life-sharing friend and to my royal nephew. Feast the yaksha soldiers."

Then diligent minister Mahothon received King Thotsakan's command, bowed, and came out.

He ordered the officers to send notice to the inner and outer cooks, left and right, according to the royal command of the asura king.

Then the beautiful young cooks received the notices, distributed supplies in a commotion, and worked according to their offices. Some roasted, curried, made phanaeng, and fried dishes, completing every sweet. They arranged all upon serving stands, each dish delicious.

Then the palace women on left and right, young, lovely, beautiful to the eye, slender and graceful, prepared themselves. Some dressed to display and show their beauty, delighting love and pleasing the heart. They combed one another's hair, oiled it, powdered their faces moon-bright without blemish, colored lips with wax, and made every young woman fresh and charming. They dressed in many fine garments, clean in bearing and manners. With the twelve inner attendants arranged on left and right, they brought the dishes in order and presented them to the yaksha king.

Then the ten-headed lord of the Solar Line invited his life-sharing friend and beloved nephew to eat with glad hearts.

Then the palace women, great and small, all of excellent and shining beauty, came in to crouch and serve. Some poured liquor into jeweled pearl cups and presented it to the three demon kings, bowing and waving fans.

The women entertainers sang, their voices soft and lingering. Drawn-out tones and plaintive turns moved through the melody, while krachappi and fiddles sounded. Hand-drums answered, drum against drum, alternating voices, as if the sound were music of heaven. Cymbals and clappers joined the singing, sweetly resounding in delight.

The dancers moved their arms, danced and made gestures, crossing and changing places around the circle, hovering before the yaksha king. Then they danced softly with graceful arms, shifting into Narai hurling the discus. The lovely women glanced sideways, made coy gestures and feigned resentment, then raised feet and hands together, turning, glancing, and seeming to flee. Beautiful as divine kinnari, they delighted the eye.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha and Wirun Chambang the asura ate while watching the dancers. Every woman was delicate and graceful, splendid as heavenly nymphs. Their voices and drawn-out tones entered the ear sweetly and struck the heart. The yaksha kings were delighted and pleased in love's flavor. The more they watched, the more their senses were entranced by the women's forms.

Then the outer serving-women on left and right finished preparing food for the troops and carried it in together.

They set it before the royal courtyard: ducks, geese, roasted buffalo, roast wild ox, elephant salad, elephant curry, fried elephant, and distilled liquor filling jars.

Then the soldiers, great and small, who had come from the two mighty cities, officers and commoners alike, rejoiced. They gathered by groups to eat and poured liquor noisily. They raised their voices, argued, and boasted, each one fierce. Some rose, leapt, danced, and made faces, grabbing at the serving-women in confusion. Some ate so much they vomited and sat muttering in delirium. Some sang tunes, danced loosely, moved their arms, and swayed their shoulders, clapping and cheering in happy pleasure.

Then Raphanasura the yaksha, with his life-sharing friend and powerful beloved nephew, finished eating the meal. All were delighted and greatly happy. The three kings spoke together until the time passed late into the night. Then they entered the palace, radiant and shining, mounted the golden couch, and lay down to sleep in the night.

Then on the side of radiant Phra Harirak, when evening came and the sun's light disappeared behind Yugunthon, moonlight shone across the clear sky, bright and pure, adorned with stars, the heavens free of cloud and stain. Dew sprinkled the flowers; birds had gone silent. The gentle wind breathed, carrying pollen-scent. Fragrance spread everywhere, and Phra Narai rejoiced greatly. When dawn brightened and shone over the sky, birds flew and called to one another.

He bathed and adorned himself like a god created by Brahma, came out from the bright jeweled chamber, and entered the radiant golden pavilion.

With the monkey troops of both splendid cities crouched in attendance and joined hands, he gave royal command: "Listen, Phiphek the yaksha. Yesterday brave Thotsakan lost his Brahma rite. What will he plan now? Tomorrow will he raise his army and come out to fight, or is he devising some asura stratagem?"

Then King Phiphek the yaksha heard Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and took the omen at the proper time. Through the three periods and the triple-eye mark, he understood by the yaksha signs, bright as divine sight. The asura bowed and reported: "At this omen, tomorrow there will be a great battle with the mighty army of Atsadong, whose king is Satthasur the yaksha, a life-sharing friend of the ten-faced one. His power subdues the three worlds. With him is the demon lord Wirun Chambang, beloved son of King Thut the asura, ruler of the Charuek realm and nephew of Thotsakan. Both have raised armies and reached Lanka city. Satthasur's power is firm in truth and dharma. He has spells from supreme Brahma: when he enters battle and calls for weapons from heaven, the gods throw them down to him. Wirun Chambang is terrible too, able to vanish together with his horse. I invite Your Majesty to raise the noble monkey army and go out to set a receiving force, so we may plan how to fight the yakshas."

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, righteous lord, heard Thotsakan's younger brother and gave command, ordering the son of the Sun: "Prepare the brave monkey troops. We will march out and fight, destroying the two wicked asuras."

Then fierce and brave Sukhrip received the royal command, bowed his head, offered farewell, and hurried away.

He arranged the monkeys in battle formation, choosing only bold fighters like lions. The eighteen crowned lords, powerful in battle, commanded eighteen monkey divisions, packed in order: vanguard and rear guard in ranks, support corps, blocking corps, reserve corps, scouts, and watchers, all complete. Every group had battle-power and could plunder the divine city of heaven. They followed the lord who bears Garuda, coming to destroy the wicked yakshas. They held spears, swords, lances, bows, arrows, javelins, and glaives, raising and brandishing them, displaying power as if they would overturn the earth.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and auspicious, when gold light shone over sky and earth and birds stirred the sun onward, heard gibbons calling and fine roosters announcing dawn. Bees flew and circled, tasting blooming flowers. The wind carried pollen, spreading a clean, sweet scent, and the fine dust touched the incarnate lord like divine flowers anointing him.

He rose from his bed, invited his royal younger brother, and walked to the bathing place.

The paired crystal sprinklers of King Kosi bathed them, water falling like misting rain. They wore fragrant essence mixed with divine gold and shining gold. Each wore trousers patterned with Garuda-vines, their curved edges bright with gems. The elder brother's divine cloth floated with kinnara designs, dancing with raised hands. The younger brother's cloth was plantain-colored with green-gold vine stems. Fluttering hems were set with yellow sapphires; side-panels had crystal roundels. Each wore an upper garment with curved chain-work, carved directional plaques hanging bright, breastplate and jeweled chain, armlets and gold bracelets joined in beauty. They wore great rings, jeweled crowns, brilliant ear-pieces, and then took their arrows. Beautiful as sun and moon, they walked one after the other to mount the chariot.

O the mansion-chariot: its rims and hubs were splendid divine gold. Its beautiful yoke curved in three soft tips, and its tiered throne had patterned panels. Rows of lions, animal figures, crowded Garudas, gods above, and upturned lotuses adorned it. Its jeweled side-pillars and leaf-work shifted into open vine patterns. Its pavilion had Garuda scrolls, kinnari figures hanging, and a thousand spires, with gemmed light glittering high into the sky. It was yoked with divine horses, crying and turning in tumult. The younger Narai, mighty in battle, attended at the lord's paired feet. Matali drove like the wind, wheels striking and hubs turning with thunderous sound. Royal umbrellas and fly-whisks were arrayed, and gongs and drums sounded in great uproar. The warriors shouted three times, proud and eager for battle. When they reached the battlefield, he halted the great army and set it in the famous Garuda formation, firm and waiting for the asura army.

Then King Phiphek the yaksha bowed with joined hands and reported to the four-armed Phra Chakri: "King Satthasur the yaksha, that friend, is fierce and skilled in war. Supreme Brahma of fierce power gave him an effective spell. Even the gods fear the demon lord. He cannot be allowed too near, or the monkey troops will be destroyed by the asura's power. Let brave Hanuman devise a trick to deceive the yaksha and gather the weapons from the clouds, so they do not fall down and attack. Then the demon will be angry at the gods and doubt Brahma's bright spell. The asura should die today by the hand of the victorious monkey."

Then wise and brave Phra Chakri heard Phiphek the demon lord, and the sky-ruling king gave command to the son of Vayu: "You divine son, fierce and bold in power, go deceive the asura and kill him dead."

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, heard Phra Chakri's words, raised joined hands, and reported: "Satthasur's army that has come is crowded across the earth and shakes the ground. For me alone to seek victory and shift the battle will not be timely. I ask to take Angkhot, Indra's nephew, and five hundred monkey soldiers with me, so they may help in battle. Sky-ruling lord, please grant mercy."

Then the lord of the three worlds, surpassing the worlds, heard the divine son of Vayu and spoke: "If you wish to take Angkhot to help devise the answer, with five hundred swift troops, then let it be as the monkey wishes."

Then Angkhot and Hanuman, skilled in war, bowed farewell to the four-armed lord and walked out together.

They arranged five hundred powerful monkeys, each strong in force, able to go under the earth and move in the clouds. When ready, they hurried away together.

When they reached a mountain ridge where the roads joined the great way, he had the forest-monkey troops halt beneath a banyan tree together. Hanuman said to his younger brother: "Now Phra Narai has sent us to destroy the yaksha. We must think carefully so the work succeeds. King Satthasur the demon lord is bright with power and sacred might. If we rush in and attack directly, the work will not fulfill our aim. You must lead the monkeys and fly hidden in the sky. Listen for the asura's voice when he cries to the gods above. All the gods of the six heavens fear him and will throw weapons down to him. You and the brave troops must gather them by power and keep them from falling to the earth. When you hear my voice, drop them into the middle of the asura troops, then come help fight the yakshas."

Then Angkhot, strong in power, received the words of mighty Hanuman and led all the troops into the air.

They hid among the clouds in the sky, where no one could see even one of them, listening for the promised signal, not careless in spirit.

Then the brave and mighty son of Vayu, when Angkhot and the troops had gone up into the clouds, rejoiced. He raised his hands in homage to the radiant lord of the three worlds, closed his eyes, gathered his senses, and recited a spell to transform his body.
