Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixty-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Satthasur and Wirun Chambang marching from Lanka, Hanuman's forest-monkey disguise, the trick by which Angkhot and five hundred monkeys intercept the gods' weapons and turn them on Satthasur's army, Hanuman and Angkhot killing Satthasur, Wirun Chambang's invisible cavalry attack, Rama's destruction of Nilaphahu and the cavalry, Wirun Chambang's magical decoy, his flight to Angkat mountain and then into a sea-foam bubble near Sattaphan, and Rama trapping the decoy while sending Hanuman after the real asura.

Hanuman Kills Satthasur

Then Satthasur, Thotsakan the yaksha, and Wirun Chambang the asura entered to sleep in the night, consulting on the battle by which they would destroy the humans and noble monkeys, attacking by demon trickery and skilled spells, until the time when cocks crowed, golden light flashed and shone, and the music of trumpets, conches, gongs, and bronze bells thundered the dawn.

The three kings bathed and adorned themselves, their faces shining bright as the moon. Powerful Satthasur said to the ten-faced lord: "I will march first to fight and break the enemy hand to hand. As for Wirun Chambang, my beloved nephew, let the demon lord stay behind and hold the army." Having spoken, the two kings took leave of the ten-headed yaksha, came down from the shining palace, and went to the victorious army.

When they arrived, each gave command to the great demon ministers to inspect the brave troops according to the formation in which they had come.

Then the two demon-yaksha ministers each received the royal command, offered homage, and came out together.

On the Atsadong minister's side, he inspected and readied the fourfold army. Elephant lords rode elephants with flowing temples, holding goads firm, with handlers and mahouts. Horse lords rode horses and held spears, moving in formation and showing bravery. Chariot lords rode leaping chariots, holding spears and waiting to destroy the enemy. Commanders prepared the fighting troops, every one holding weapons complete. The Charuek chief minister inspected the horse troops: ten oceans of cavalry, fierce as lions in attack, the riders holding spears and lances, covering the ground of Lanka city.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha and Wirun Chambang the asura came to wash in the water.

The two kings bathed and washed. Fragrant streams carried the scent of pollen. Each wore trousers with curved edges and cloth patterned with kinnara hands in gesture. Their fluttering hems and side-panels were curling vines; emerald armor shone bright. Their upper garments were plantain-green with gold radiance; their breast-bands had scrolls and chains. Hanging ornaments, rainbow diamonds, directional plaques, breastplates, and gold roundels flashed; gold bracelets and armlets were serpent-wound, and rings were in Garuda settings. Wearing great nine-gem crowns and shining ear-pieces, each took a jeweled spear and mace and mounted chariot and horse together.

O the chariot, the war-chariot: its wheel-rims were crystal set with rubies. The soft-curved yoke was beautiful with leaf-work; the golden throne was carved with patterns. It was adorned with praying gods and Garudas standing bright, gripping nagas; hanging and standing ornaments and patterned panels made the pavilion look like Indra's mansion. It was yoked with four thousand royal lions. Lothan held the bow and drove fast as flight, with all tall ornaments complete and streaming to the sky. Pipes, drums, and gongs joined sound; the shouting army was loud in tumult. They hurried chariots and tenfold troops, heading out from the city.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, when the royal army had already left the city, moved the victorious horse troops.

O the noble horse, best in the world, proud and brave, eager for battle, leaping to stamp upon enemies. It wore complete gold-studded harness, with tassels and jeweled ear-ornaments. Its mouth was red like a red gem, while its whole body was smooth black sapphire. Its feet moved quick as a cutting wind; it was as spirited as a royal lion. The cavalry troops drove and urged their horses together in tumult. The sound of hoofbeats thundered; fighting men shouted in commotion. Dust rose and covered the upper sky as they pressed and hurried onward.

Then a great white muntjac, an evil ominous sign that the asura's victorious army would be lost, arose in troubled urgency, sent by fate to show the yaksha an omen. It ran from the forest thicket and cut across the demon lord's troops.

Then brave-hearted King Satthasur glanced and saw the common forest muntjac leap and run past before him. Thinking, he was greatly amazed. He saw a vile sign, a great omen, and it made him increasingly afraid and anxious beyond measure. "If I force the army to march on, it will go against the rules of war victory." Having thought this, he halted the army at the edge of the forest.

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, saw Satthasur the asura's army march up to the forest edge. The sounds of horses, chariots, and elephants made the earth shake and tremble. The powerful monkey lord climbed and swung through the trees toward them.

When he came near the royal victory-chariot of the yaksha king, he called out and asked: "Listen, demon lord. Where are you going, that you raise such brave troops, packed over the face of the earth? What matter is this, asura?"

Then King Satthasur the yaksha heard the little monkey speak, and no suspicion entered his spirit. He thought it was a forest monkey roaming in the woods, and he gave royal command: "Ho, forest-monkey! I am raising troops, a hundred thousand brave soldiers and army divisions, to destroy the unrighteous humans named Lak and Ram. You are of the monkey kind. What business brings you to question me? What do you seek in this matter, that you speak so insolently without fearing my power?"

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, heard and answered the asura: "I ask in goodwill. Do not be angry. I only wish to understand the matter; it is not that I do not fear the yaksha king's power. But as for fighting Phra Lak and Phra Rama, demon lord, do not say such things. All the brave friends, allies, and kin of Thotsakan who boasted of strength have had their lives ended because of arrogance and swollen power. However great your rank is, if you come to fight mighty Phra Chakrit, all of you will be strewn dead upon the earth. Demon king, stop and think carefully."

Then King Satthasur the yaksha heard and answered: "Ho, vile one, whom would you deceive? You are a beast and come to insult me. Do you not know me? My name is feared through the three worlds because I possess Brahma's spell. If I command the bands of gods to throw down weapons, I receive them all. Why should I care about earth-walking humans? Do not belittle me. I am not like the people of Lanka."

Then the brave and mighty son of Vayu heard the asura king and answered: "If you have such power, then I think the match may be good enough. I myself am glad that victory may come to the enemy. Perhaps the demon lord's words are not true, and you will be defeated by radiant Phra Harirak, who bears a fine special spell. I would like to see your power."

Then King Satthasur the yaksha did not perceive the trick. The asura answered: "Hey, meddling monkey! If you want to see my power, so be it." Having spoken, he stood up on the victory-chariot, steadied his mind, and recited magic spells.

He called the hosts of gods, his voice thundering in the sky, reaching to the upper heavens throughout every shining celestial mansion.

Then all classes of gods heard Satthasur the asura calling loudly up to them. The six heavens were thrown into confusion. Fearing the yaksha's power, each god hurled sharp weapons, scattering them everywhere through the clouds.

Then powerful Angkhot and all the monkeys together seized and gathered the weapons.

Then brave Hanuman, the great soldier, knew that his beloved younger brother and the brave monkey troops had seized every weapon. The monkey rejoiced, swung down from the trees to the ground, clapped his hands, and mocked the asura.

"Tch! Lord of Atsadong, you boasted of mighty battle-power. Why do I see no weapons, as your mouth spoke? Is this how you will march to fight the radiant discus-armed lord? I am only a forest monkey, yet I am better than you, who claim fierce power. If I called in play as a yaksha does, the gods would throw weapons to me." Speaking so, he leapt close to the demon lord's victory-chariot.

Then brave-hearted King Satthasur heard the monkey's crude mockery. The demon king was furious like age-ending fire. Doubt arose in him over the spell-grace of supreme Brahma. He stamped his foot and clenched his teeth. "Ha, deluded arrogant wretch. Since you boast that you have effective spell-power, quickly call the weapons to fall. If they do not, I will kill you at once."

Then Hanuman, skilled in victory, heard the asura's speech, and the monkey lord cried in answer: "Demon lord, watch. I will not lie." Speaking so, he made as if steadying his mind and recited spells by trickery.

When he had finished, he pretended to call aloud: "Ho, divine kings in every direction! We need weapons. Throw them down without delay."

Then Angkhot, nephew of King Kosi, and the five hundred excellent monkeys heard Hanuman's voice. Each dropped the weapons in sheets, bright and shining everywhere. They struck the yaksha troops dead, throwing the whole asura army into confusion.

Then the brave and mighty son of Vayu saw the yakshas dead everywhere and proclaimed: "Ho, Satthasur the asura! Do you see my power or not? You boast that your rank is terrible. Who would fear an asura like you? Is this how you will go fight radiant Phra Chakrit? Your head will roll like a polo ball by the arrow of mighty Phra Chakri. Break off the campaign and take your troops back to the city. I am thinking mercifully and hope to let you live."

Then created King Satthasur heard and was angry like age-ending fire. The yaksha cried in answer: "Ha, look at this beast, arrogant and foul in speech. What is your name, and who sent you to serve? How dare you despise and slight me, meddling wretch? You will die. Even if the gods do not give me weapons, do not think I will listen to you. As for the two noble human brothers, even if they are strong with sacred arrows and have subdued all ten directions, I fear their power less than a thread. I am the crown of Atsadong. Do not doubt that I will turn back the fourfold army; if I have not killed Lak and Ram, I will not return to the city."

Then the brave and mighty son of Vayu heard and called back: "Do not speak arrogantly. I am the soldier of the arrow-bearing lord, named Hanuman, noble monkey. I am Death, destroyer of the world's substance, come to take the demon lord's life. Even Sahatsadecha, fierce and strong, with two thousand hands, I killed and ended; I cut off his head and mounted it in disgrace. You have only two arms. How can you contend with my power?" Having spoken, the quick-witted monkey lord steadied his mind and recited magic.

His body grew as large as supreme Brahma, towering and looming over the sky, with four faces and eight mighty arms, and he broke the asura's chariot.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha fell to the earth and was angry like the fire at the end of an age. He sprang up, stood, stamped his foot, and shouted with a voice like thunder: "Ho, asura-yakshas! Are you afraid of this deluded monkey? Why do you not go in and fight? Battle, seize him, and hurry; drive in and kill him dead."

Then the brave asura troops heard the demon king's command, and each rushed into battle.

They surrounded him front and back in turmoil, attacking and chasing the noble monkey. Some stabbed, some cut, some struck, and the asuras kept pressing in.

Then mighty Angkhot saw the asura troops come in to contend with Hanuman's power. Furious like burning fire, he led the brave monkey troops down to the earth to attack the asuras.

Hanuman swung the trident and hacked; Angkhot chased and killed yakshas. The monkey attendants took advantage and struck back against the asuras in tumult. Demon troops turned to receive them, and monkeys leapt in to seize them in confusion. One monkey fought a hundred yakshas; some monkeys stood against a thousand. The demons crowded in and stabbed, while the monkeys whirled and parried like turning wheels. Companies attacked and grappled with one another; the asuras did not fear their power. The monkeys slapped, bit, fought, and struck, tearing off legs and arms across the forest. The dead fell piled on the earth, and the yakshas broke in ruin and confusion.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha saw the monkeys attacking and the asuras dead everywhere. Furious, he stamped his foot until earth and sky trembled. Brandishing his powerful sacred arrow, he chased and struck the monkey troops.

Alone, he fought and drove the battle, bold as a royal lion. The monkey soldiers could not stand against him and fled broken, tumbling over one another.

Then powerful Hanuman saw the monkeys would not stand and fight while the yaksha chased and struck them. He gnashed his teeth, his hair bristled, and he swung the trident with a roar. Leaping by power, he attacked and blocked the demon lord's face.

The two rushed together and grappled in battle, fighting without restraint in brave strength. The mighty and victorious son of Vayu leapt and kicked the asura in the chest. The demon lord could not hold himself and staggered toward the foot of the splendid mountain. The monkey troops shouted and mocked the asura in tumult.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha was furious like heavenly fire. He drew his powerful arrow and released it.

The sound was like a cutting wind; Mount Chakkrawan shook. The sacred arrow displayed fierce power, chasing and circling Hanuman's body.

Then the brave and mighty son of Vayu saw the yaksha release the demon arrow to attack him. He rushed and gathered it in by power.

He broke it into small and large pieces, threw them back at the yaksha, and pointed at his face: "Ho, accursed one. Today your life will end."

Then created King Satthasur, losing his arrow, burned like age-ending fire. The yaksha was very angry and furious. His eyes were red like sunlight. Brandishing his mace like a turning wheel and clenching his teeth in fury, the demon lord rushed in to attack.

He struck left and swept right in tumult with the strength of fierce yaksha power. Many blows struck the son of Vayu, and the monkey lord turned and staggered aside.

Then brave Hanuman, the great soldier, quickly steadied himself and rushed in to seize the yaksha.

He leapt up, stepped on the yaksha's knee, bent his head back, and wheeled like a turning wheel. Angkhot also came in to help, fighting, cutting, and stabbing the asura.

Then King Satthasur the yaksha fought alone, grappling with the two monkeys.

All three battled in unbroken struggle, stabbing, cutting, guarding, and parrying in confusion. Each was bold, brave, and enduring, fighting without lowering the hand.

Then brave Hanuman, skilled in war, pressed the killing attack while the monkeys drove the asuras back.

With his left hand he seized the yaksha's club and broke it by brave strength. He slapped, bit, bound, and gathered the body, then hurled the yaksha down onto the ground. He leapt and stamped on his chest, swinging the powerful trident to kill; he cut off the demon lord's hand and head, and the breath and life ended.

When he had finished destroying the asura, the son of Vayu held the yaksha's head and took Angkhot and the soldiers, flying back to the victorious army.

When they arrived, the two monkeys raised their hands and bowed in homage. They reported everything from beginning to end, according to how they had killed the asura. Then they presented the demon lord's head to the discus-bearing lord amid the ministers and all the troops.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow, heard the powerful son of Vayu and saw the yaksha's head. The king rejoiced that his thought had been fulfilled. The powerful lord was pleased and happy, his face shining like the moon. He gave royal command, praising Angkhot and the son of Vayu, brave elder and younger brothers, together with their power, wisdom, and skill, saying none like them could be found in all Chakkrawan.

Then Satthasur's surviving yaksha troops, wounded and senseless, ran away through the forest.

Some demons met their companions, fear shaking their bodies without stopping, and ran headlong into the woods, thinking the monkeys were chasing them. When they reached Wirun Chambang's army, they stumbled in and told the asura vanguard: "The Atsadong army marched along the forest edge and fought the noble monkeys. The lord and chief of warriors has now lost his life."

Then Chitkasur, great vanguard commander, heard every detail and was shocked. They all went in.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to the yaksha king: "King Satthasur the asura marched his army into the forest. He met one tiny monkey swinging from tall forest branches. The demon king was lulled and deceived by its bold speech. Suddenly it became eight-armed and four-faced and attacked the yakshas. Its troops rushed in to fight and killed the asura king."

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha heard as if struck by lightning. The asura clenched his teeth. Resentment and regret were beyond measure; the yaksha king was furious and rash. He sprang onto his fierce horse and drove his army in haste.

Seeing the troops of Atsadong city dead in piles beyond counting, he hurried his brave horse troops, cut away from the great road, and came on. The sound of saddle-cloths and stirrups struck together; battle soldiers rode forward. The earth thundered and rumbled like waves in the great sea. Dust spread through the sky, hiding the sun's disk. The horse troops drove their horses leaping, shouting until all shook, racing forward together.

Glancing ahead, he saw the human army set in a great Garuda formation, with troops all made of forest-monkeys. Angry as fire burning the sky, he roared a command to the demon vanguard: "Hurry the horses in a broad attack. Chase and kill the enemy."

Then Chitkasur the yaksha received the command and drove the horses rushing in against the monkeys.

They split their wings and opened a false gap, luring the monkeys to chase. Then they massed fire-guns and arrows, turned behind them, and hurled lances in close battle among the troops. They stabbed with spears, glaives, javelins, and darts; the monkeys ran in confusion. The cavalry found advantage and attacked in tumult, killing and fighting.

Then the eighteen crowned noble monkeys saw the monkeys broken and routed senselessly. Angry as fire burning the sky, Nilek seized horses and smashed them, Nilan killed yakshas, Surasen struck the horse-troops, and Pingkhala drew the diamond trident and stabbed. The demon troops broke and recoiled, unable to withstand the monkeys' strong power. They died scattered on the field, and the monkey troops chased and stabbed in turmoil.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha saw his troops breaking and dying senselessly. Angry as the fire at the end of an age, he raised his joined hands above his head, worshiped the grace of creating Brahma, performed the yaksha doctrine, held his breath, and recited the invisibility spell.

By the force of the practiced spell, the yaksha's body, shadow, and horse all vanished, and he drove the horse in to attack.

He rushed and stabbed left and right without pause, swift as a lion, turning quickly and wheeling in close fight. The monkeys died in piles, thrown over one another.

Then the monkey troops stirred their bodies, meaning to destroy the yaksha, standing firm and intent for the right moment. But they heard only the sound of horse-hooves and did not see the yaksha's body. Unable to answer the attack, they fell to the ground. The monkey army ran in confusion through the whole force, unable to withstand his brave power. They broke and recoiled as far as the incarnate lord's chariot, all in tumult and uproar.

Then the lord of the three worlds, surpassing the worlds, seated upon the bright jeweled chariot, saw the monkey soldiers dead and scattered on the battlefield, some running wildly in flight. Looking out, he could not see the asura pursuing them among the troops; he heard only the quick striking sound as monkeys died in confusion. Not knowing how they could stand against him, the mighty-armed lord asked the astrologer: "Wirun Chambang the demon lord has hidden his body and come in to kill. The monkeys are dead everywhere. How can we oppose the yaksha?"

Then well-disposed Phiphek heard the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and answered the royal words: "Your Majesty, bearer of Garuda, release the beautiful Brahmastra arrow to destroy the asura's horse. Then you should be able to get the demon himself."

Then the jeweled discus-bearing lord heard Phiphek the yaksha, and the righteous lord took an arrow and released it.

Its sound thundered through sky and air; it became countless arrows scattered everywhere. They struck the cavalry troops and destroyed the demon lord's whole army. Nilaphahu, the royal horse, also fell and lost its life by the power of the incarnate lord. The monkey soldiers came back to life.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, losing his horse as if losing his own life, also losing all the cavalry troops, stood alone and saw no one. The yaksha was frightened and shaken. The asura was out of thought and power, unable to stand and fight. His face pale, body trembling, and spirit gone, he regretted his life utterly. "Tch, these two humans have fierce power surpassing the world. I must devise a trick to flee and save my life." Thinking so, he removed his head-cloth and tied it into a magical decoy. It sat on a horse, holding a spear and standing as if ready to leap into the sky. When finished, he recited magic spells by asura trickery.

When seven rounds were complete, he blew into the yaksha image. It became an asura with horse, as if it had life. Then he displayed power, making darkness cover every direction. As the decoy flew and leapt up to the clouds, the real asura secretly escaped.

When he reached Angkat mountain, he went straight down to the great mountain. He saw forest-monkeys carrying baskets of fruit together, going into the cave mouth. The asura fixed his eyes and watched carefully: "Good or bad, there may be a great ascetic here, practicing austerity and celibacy. I will enter and take refuge at the rishi's feet." Having thought this, he raised joined hands and recited a powerful spell.

At once his shadow vanished, and the yaksha's body could not be seen. He followed the monkey women into the shining cave.

He saw a beautiful woman, her face bright as a heavenly woman, delicate, lovely, and splendid. The yaksha rejoiced. He released the brilliant spell, made his yaksha body appear, and spoke sweet words: "I have fled Phra Rama's arrow. Have mercy and help preserve my life. I ask to stay in this cave only until dawn, and then I will take leave of you, beautiful lady."

Then the young monkey-woman, lovely and beautiful, glanced and saw the demon lord come pleading in speech. Her fear was almost unbearable; startled, she turned her face away. Hearing him name Phra Chakri, the goddess considered: "Since this yaksha has fled the jeweled discus-lord's arrow, perhaps our suffering will now end. But if I let the asura take refuge in the cave, that is not proper. A woman near a man is everywhere vulnerable to suspicion. I must tell him to go away, so I will not be stained by desire." Having thought this, she answered: "As for staying here, I think you will not escape Phra Chakri's arrow. You will bring death on me."

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha heard the woman's words and was distressed and helpless. He said: "If you have no pity and will not let me stay in the great cave, it is my karma, and I must take leave. But where should I take refuge so that I may escape the powerful sacred arrow of radiant Phra Rama? Tell me as a friend, and I will not forget your kindness."

Then the beloved monkey-woman heard the asura's plea and answered: "As for fleeing Phra Chakri's arrow, I will tell you a stratagem. Go to the shore of the great ocean, south of the foot of Sattaphan mountain, outside Vinantaka peak, in the Sithandorn sea between Atsakan. It is a place of fierce serpents; beyond that, no one goes back and forth. Transform yourself to whatever size you can by your yaksha power and hide in a bubble on the water. I think you will preserve your life."

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha heard the heavenly woman's words, and the asura gradually grew easier in heart. He said: "Your compassion and kindness are without limit. Remain in peace; I will take leave according to your words." Having spoken, he hurried from the golden cave, flew leaping up into the clouds, and went straight to the shore of Sithandorn.

When he reached the foot of Sattaphan, at the peak named Atsakan, he examined the ocean and saw a fitting clump of foam. He raised joined hands over his head, worshiped Brahma's grace three times, gathered his mind, recited magic, and transformed himself by asura power.

His body shrank to the size of a mite by the yaksha's splendid victorious spell. He pushed into the river-foam and floated in the water.

Then the brave magical decoy that had taken the demon lord's form rode its horse into battle. It looked like Wirun Chambang the asura, and the monkeys could not know otherwise. It twisted and turned, stabbing in confusion, and the monkeys died everywhere.

Then all the monkey troops crowded around in tumult, receiving the horse and striking back at the asura.

Some raised mountains and threw them; some monkeys rushed to seize the yaksha. Some stabbed and cut in battle, but the decoy's body was not scratched. All the eighteen crowned lords came in to fight in confusion, but the image was hardy and enduring, attacking without lowering its hand.

Then Phra Narai of the Solar Line, bearer of the arrow, saw the yaksha riding the horse and fighting, while monkeys died scattered everywhere. He drew Phlai Wat and set it to the string, aiming to destroy the yaksha's life. Drawing back with mighty strength, the sky-ruling lord released it.

The victorious arrow struck the decoy image, and it shattered, unable to withstand the force, but quickly became whole again. The king shot at it three times, and the form still remained, driving the horse and stabbing the noble monkey troops. His doubt multiplied, and he gave royal command, asking Phiphek the yaksha: "This asura Wirun Chambang does not lose his life when struck. What kind of thing is this?"

Then well-disposed Phiphek examined and understood clearly. He bowed and answered the royal words: "This form is not the asura himself. It is a deception-form made by the yaksha. When Your Majesty released the arrow in battle and struck his horse dead, the asura feared the lord's power and dared not match brave strength. He took the demon lord's head-cloth and recited spells, binding a magical decoy. He himself secretly fled the conch-bearing lord and went to great Angkat mountain. Let Your Majesty release the victorious arrow as a net to surround the deception-form, and then send brave Hanuman, who possesses fierce bold power, to follow and kill the asura. If the yaksha meets death, the demon lord's decoy will vanish, and horse and body together will become his head-cloth and spear."

อสุรีเกรงฤทธิ์ภูวนาถ / ไม่อาจจะต่อกำลังหาญ
จึ่งเอาผ้าโพกขุนมาร / อ่านเวทผูกภาพพยนต์ไว้
ตัวมันลอบหนีพระทรงสังข์ / ไปยังอังกาศเขาใหญ่
ขอพระองค์จงแผลงศิลป์ชัย / เป็นข่ายไปล้อมรูปมารยา
