Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the sixty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Hanuman's pursuit of Wirun Chambang to Angkat mountain, his meeting with the cursed heavenly woman Wanarin, her account of Phra Isuan's curse and of the sea-foam hiding place, Hanuman's battle with Wirun Chambang in the Sithandorn sea, the asura's death at Atsakanna mountain, Wanarin's return to Kailasa, Rama's praise of Hanuman, Thotsakan's grief, and the mission of Nonyawik and Vayuwek to summon Thao Maliwarat from Sky-Top Mountain.

Translation

Hanuman Kills Wirun Chambang

Then Vayu's son, strong and fierce in power, received the command of the lord who bears Garuda, bowed in homage, and flew away.

He hurried like the royal Garuda, fixing his eyes on great Angkat mountain. He drove through mist and cloud with speed and descended near the mouth of the mountain cave. When he reached the ground, he stood and looked for the yaksha's footprints. He saw a band of forest-monkeys coming along, talking noisily, moving in line along the mountain slope, carrying loads and baskets of fruit. The monkey lord spoke: "Ho, listen, forest monkeys. You have gathered fruit and are carrying it away. Where are you going? To whom will you give it, there in the mountain cave?"

Then the band of fine forest-monkeys heard and answered: "We have gathered these fruits to send to young Lady Wanarin inside the Angkat cave. Morning and evening, never missing a time, we have done this always for a very long while."

Then Vayu's son, brave in power and bold in heart, heard the forest-monkeys state the matter. When they named the young woman, he rejoiced as if he had obtained a mansion in heaven, bright with the tiers of Yama's realm. He hurried from the mountain and followed the monkeys inside.

When he reached the mouth of the jeweled, glittering cave, the thoughtful son of Phra Phai reflected with quick wisdom: "If I go in wearing a monkey form and speak with the woman, she may shrink from the meeting. It would delay the command of the four-armed lord, who sent me to pursue and kill the asura. I must transform into a human, pure, young, and beautiful, and go in to question the lady. Then the lovely one may soften." It is the nature of woman and man that everything rests upon affection; if one desires a thing, it can be fulfilled as imagined. Having thought this, he raised his hands above his head, worshiped the lord, and also the grace of the royal Chakri, then recited learned spells and changed his body.

He became a handsome young man, his face bright and pleasing, shedding the excellence of supreme male beauty, and moved his arms gracefully into the mountain cave.

When he arrived and turned his glance, he saw the beautiful chief lady sitting upon a jeweled couch. The monkey lord stared and could not take his eyes away.

He looked at her face, shining like the moon; at her brows, curved like written lines; at her eyes, like the eyes of a doe; at her nose, delicate and bright. He looked at her lips, fresh as if about to smile; at her cheeks, beloved to the gaze; at her ears, like flower petals; at her teeth, quick-bright like sapphire light. He looked at her breasts, like lotus blossoms; at her whole form, lovely in every part; at her arms, like the trunks of elephants; at her beauty, like a heavenly kinnari. The more he gazed, the more his mind delighted and grew, making him ponder love. Desire throbbed restlessly in his spirit, and he spoke to ask her.

"O dear one, my elder-sister lady, beauty who is the summit of desire, your form delights and shakes the heart. What is your name, lady? What is the dwelling and city of your solar line? Where is your family, beautiful one? Why have you come to stay alone here in this mountain, so forlorn? Have you lost wealth, retinue, subjects, and kingdom? Seeing your lovely body has increased love in me and delighted my eyes."

Then the lovely Lady Wanarin heard and glanced over. She saw a handsome, graceful human, delicate and pleasing to the eye, like a god descended from heaven. The more she gazed, the more amazed she was; the maiden wondered in her heart. "Who is this, so proud and bold? Is he a guardian god or not? Is he Indra from heaven, a god from Dusita's level? Or is he Phra Swayambhu, Phra Narai the splendid lord, or the lord of the forest, changing his body and coming in to entice me, speaking to test my heart? He makes my spirit shy and ashamed, as if I would sink into the earth." Both ashamed and very afraid, the lovely lady turned her face away, remained silent, and did not speak; the lady walked with graceful, swaying arms.

"O fair, graceful beauty, lovely as a divine apsara, the gods have moved my heart and caused me to wander until I met my beloved in this golden cave. It is as if I had obtained the matchless jewel of a universal king. My heart hopes to entrust its life to you, to share one chamber until life ends. Is it right to remain silent and show no kindness? Alas, what anger or resentment do you have toward me, that you turn your face away, refuse even to look, and flee, beloved? Look at the hardship I have endured, breaking through forest and thorns until my breast was nearly broken. Show some pity, lovely one. Turn your face and speak, enough to refresh my heart, as if saving my life. If you give no grace, I may well die."

Then Lady Wanarin, heavenly young woman, heard his lamenting words and silently considered: "Since Phra Isuan cursed me, I have lived in this great cave. Counting the long time, it has reached thirty thousand years. Hardship and misery have been endless; suffering burns like fire. I alone am here, with no one to come or go. I saw only the yaksha fleeing the arrow of the four-armed royal lord. That fits the decree of Phra Isuan, who said I would be released from punishment. Yet why is this one not a monkey, come to defeat the deluded asura? Thinking on it is strange. If I do not speak, the matter will not be clear." So she said: "Where have you come from, that you act so boldly without fear? You pry into my lineage and name, speaking forward and overstepping without regard. Please leave the cave. I cannot speak with you. It would bring blame and gossip, and wherever it became known, it would be no good thing."

Then Hanuman, glorious and skilled in victory, heard and spoke: "Alas, lady, you show no kindness. I questioned because I had doubt, not because I meant to overstep shamelessly. I only wished to know the matter. Is it right to still say nothing to me? I spent my strength breaking through forest and thorns, nearly giving up my life, because I loved your radiant youthful beauty and fixed my purpose on finding you. I hoped to entrust a friendly heart to you and share life with you, the two of us. I would die for you, soft-fleshed lady, and live in this golden cave with you. Do not drive me from the cave. Be gracious and raise up my love." As he spoke, he moved with graceful steps. "Why flee from me, young beauty?"

Then Wanarin, tender and beloved, saw the young man come near as if to touch her. The lovely woman stepped aside and turned away. Then she answered: "What you say is doubtful. You say you broke through forest and wilderness, intent upon coming. How did you know that I live in this cave? Do not speak sweetly with false words and made-up lies. Even if you wish to question me, it is not fitting to come so close. Seeing that I am a woman, you act as if to oppress me without fear. Tell me what you need. My own suffering is severe. You come and flirt like this, but I am a person of rank. Do not come nearer."

"O utmost beloved, noble woman who is the peak of desire, heart of mine, be kind. I am an honest man; do not take offense. I love you and wish to entrust my life to you; it is not that I have no thought of fear. I have not handled you rudely. I ask only in friendship. Why do you not state the matter? Instead, maiden, you blame me and press back with words like this. How can I know what you think? Tell me, noble lady. If my fortune is enough to help, I will support you, dear heart, and not let anything trouble your spirit. Whatever burden lies on you, young beauty, I will volunteer for it. The friendship I bring, heavenly woman and jewel of the sky, please receive with pity."

"O words, such words, like the nectar of heaven in beauty. You shape and decorate airy speech; if I did not yet know, my heart would die in trust. As for your saying that you will help my suffering, your kindness would be without limit. But the matter of entrusting love between us: do not speak that word. Since you wonder and ask, I will tell you as you desire. I am a person of heaven, named Wanarin Nari. I lived at golden Kailasa as a servant at the feet of radiant Phra Isuan. Now that you know, go quickly. Do not linger and vex me. Moreover, if Phra Isuan learns of this, the punishment will be great. Your own body will not escape danger, and we will both perish."

Then Vayu's son, great and brave in heart, smiled and answered: "Your words are sharp. Do not be hurt yet; let me ask until the matter is clear. You say you are a protected servant of Phra Isuan, but I still doubt, lady. Why do you not stay on Kailasa? Why have you come to live at beautiful Angkat mountain? Or do you bring Phra Suli's power to frighten me with divine punishment? You still do not tell me the reason for this sorrow and growing grief, but turn your words aside in speech. It is strange and doubtful. If you tell the truth, I can help in every way. Do not worry or let your heart burn. I will bring all things to completion."

Then Wanarin, tender and beloved, heard the sweet words, and the lovely woman answered: "I will tell you truthfully. In the beginning I served beneath the splendid feet of Phra Isuan, lord of the crest, at Mount Kailasa. My duty was to guard the golden lamp in the jeweled mansion. One day Phra Suli went out among ascetics and gods and sat speaking for a long while with Narada, the strong meditation master. I went and played with the heavenly women, and the lamp in the jeweled stand went out. Powerful Phra Suli proclaimed and called for me, but I did not come. Angered, he cursed me down to live in Angkat mountain. When Phra Narai incarnates and kills the ten-faced yaksha in the city of Lanka, he will send the monkey Hanuman to follow Wirun Chambang, the mighty one. When I have informed him of the matter, then I will be released from the curse of the lord of the worlds."

"O fair and graceful beauty, young woman who is the peak of love, this is our merit, lady. By chance the royal Chakri has commanded me. He sent me to follow the yaksha, and so I met the radiant lovely one. It fits Phra Suli's curse; now you will be free from danger. If you had told me clearly at first, there would not have been such delay. I will help your suffering, dear lady, but how fully can I reach your heart? I myself am Hanuman, the foremost soldier of Phra Narai, created in power. I have followed the demon to kill him, because he has afflicted the three realms. Has Wirun Chambang the yaksha come here or not? Tell me the truth, and I will help your suffering."

"O tongue, airy tongue. Your clever speech invents words, sweet and pleasing from the beginning, to make me believe. You are the one named Hanuman, foremost soldier of radiant Phra Ram? With a slender, graceful body like this, you come and speak to deceive me. Stop the play and let me see the truth. Though I am a woman, I know enough. I am not light-hearted enough to trust the wind of your speech. You boast of being a soldier of the incarnate lord, but where are the earrings, diamond hairs, and garland? Where are the crystal fangs? You are only a human, not a monkey; no bright power shines in you. You do not yawn stars, moon, and sun. How can you claim to be Hanuman? You will go destroy Wirun Chambang? Hearing this, I cannot hold back a smile. O mighty soldier skilled in victory, do not speak of fearsome power."

"O heart's beloved, beautiful and curved in grace, your speech is keen beyond wisdom, words that tease while seeming to speak. When I tell you truthfully, blessed one, you do not believe me. The right thing would be kindness, but now everything becomes false. Dear one, do not mock too soon. I fear only that I will have to beg my way back to heaven, like Butsamali in the city of Mayan." Speaking so, he raised his hands in worship to radiant Phra Swayambhu, gathered his mind, recited a powerful spell, and the monkey lord changed his body back.

In an instant he became a monkey, with lovely crystal fangs on left and right, earrings, diamond hairs, and a garland. When he yawned, stars, moon, and sun appeared.

Then Lady Wanarin, heavenly young woman, saw mighty Hanuman. Her body shook and she cried out at once. With both hands the lovely woman covered her eyes. She could not look at the noble monkey's face. Fear nearly ended her senses, and the lady did not lift her face.

"O eyes of mine, young woman who is the peak of desire, now do you see the truth, lady, along with the words I spoke at first? As for your own body, young beauty, Phra Swayambhu has given you to me as reward for following the asura. Lovely one, what will you say? Or do you still doubt, and so cover your face? Look clearly at what you wondered about. Do not be startled or afraid. I have no fierce power." Speaking so, he stroked the young woman's back, teasing her with affection, kissing and gazing on the maiden's face, reaching and moving his arms around her.

Then beautiful Wanarin, beloved lady, brushed off the monkey's hand, gave him a sharp sidelong look, and spoke: "So you truly are the soldier of the radiant incarnate lord. Hurry and follow the asura. Do not linger and vex me."

"Dear one, guarded beauty, soft and tender peak of desire, flower of heaven, how can you drive me away, maiden? My love for you is beyond love; I cannot break this affection. Show pity, jewel of my eyes. Our fortune must have paired us before." Speaking so, he curved his arms around her and embraced her in loving delight. The two leaned close together in restless affection, cherishing the delicate blossom. Bees flew and cried around the flowers, bathing in pollen; the opened blossoms received the sun; fragrance spread and flowed. The wind passed over waves, foam splashed along the shore, and the two joined in love, filled with deep happiness together.

Then Wanarin, young and beloved, having shared the play of the heart with mighty Vayu's son, first learned the flavor of close delight. Leaning and clinging, she could no longer be apart. She forgot shame, was swept into longing, and gave her heart. The young woman forgot every torment. She forgot Phra Swayambhu, forgot the royal seat of Kailasa, forgot her heavenly companions and attendants; the young beauty's spirit was wholly delighted.

Then bold Hanuman, brave soldier, after fulfilling his delight with the heavenly woman, spoke these fair words: "Stay here a little while, lovely one. I must leave you, beloved, by the command of the four-armed lord. I will hurry to follow and destroy the asura. Then I will return to you, sister, share your chamber, and send you to Kailasa today. Do not let your heart burn. As for Wirun Chambang the yaksha, where has he fled and hidden? Point out the path for me, so I may kill him."

Then lovely Wanarin, heavenly young woman, heard the son of Phra Phai and was stunned through her whole body. She suffered and grieved deeply because her mind would be parted from the noble monkey. The lady felt hollow in breast and heart, and could only sigh again and again. Tears filled her eyes; she could hardly open her mouth to speak. She clung to Hanuman's feet and sobbed as if her senses would end.

She calmed her heart by thinking that she would be freed from suffering and return to happiness at beautiful Kailasa. Then the lady raised her right hand and pointed out the path and place: "Wirun Chambang fled the arrow of the four-armed royal lord and hid in a bubble on the waters of the Sithandorn great sea, at the edge of the Sattaphan range, south of great Mount Meru. You who are mighty and quick in wisdom, hurry there to find the asura."

Then Hanuman, glorious and skilled in victory, heard the heavenly woman point out where the demon lived. He rejoiced as if he had gained the treasures of heaven. He embraced the lovely woman and received her spirit with kisses. Then he displayed his power; the ten directions thundered and shook. He came out of the cave with speed and flew away along the path of clouds.

When he reached Atsakanna mountain, the honored monkey lord descended to the foot of the mountain beside the shore of the great waters. He saw foam-bubbles scattered along the splashing waves, but one bubble was immeasurably large, motionless and firm in the water. Thinking this strange, he said in his heart: "Surely the fleeing yaksha lord has come and hidden in this bubble." The monkey fixed his thought firmly. Intending to seize the asura in the midst of the great ocean, he raised his hands and worshiped the grace of the lord of the three worlds, held his mind steady, and recited learned spells.

His body grew as large as great Brahma, towering high above the mountain. With eight arms and four faces, the mighty one seized the huge bubble by his power.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, enclosed in his enemy's hand, became startled and afraid. His body returned to yaksha form. He exerted power, freed himself, brandished his mace like a flame, and leapt in to fight the monkey.

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in battle, stood firm upon the ocean's back and fought hand to hand against the asura.

The sea rose in surging waves, shaking as far as Chakkrawan mountain. Both were brave, both fierce in attack, taking turns striking and answering each other.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha fought close, not thinking of his life. The asura hurled himself in to seize Hanuman.

With his left foot he stepped on Vayu's son's knee, raised his mace-weapon to kill him, turned and shifted posture in attack, and the demon lord struck the monkey.

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in battle, was struck by the asura's mace and sank into the belly of the ocean down to the ground below. The monkey lord rose up again, drew his trident, brandished it like firelight, and rushed to seize the asura.

He planted his left foot on the yaksha's knee, stood firm, snatched the demon's mace, struck the asura many times, and again stabbed him with the powerful trident.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, losing his club as if losing life, grew faint and desolate. His power and plans for fighting were exhausted; he could no longer withstand the monkey. Pain brought him close to death. He steadied his mind and recited a powerful spell.

By the force of Brahma's mantra, the Ganges opened a passage for the yaksha. He fled down through a water-channel to the ground at the sea's floor.

He sat in the belly of the ocean, deep and vast beyond measure, gathered his spirit in meditation, and recited learned spells.

Then Hanuman, brave and skilled in victory, saw that Wirun Chambang the asura did not return to fight. He had vanished into the belly of the ocean and did not rise again. The wise monkey lord set his heart on seizing the demon. He raised his hands and bowed to Phra Swayambhu, the creator lord, and to the god Phra Phai; holding his breath, he recited learned spells.

His tail became huge and long, reaching through the ocean to the farthest rock-bed. It circled around the asura's body and slowly drew in closer and closer.

Then Wirun Chambang the yaksha, hiding in the belly of the waters, found the monkey lord's tail surrounding him. His face went pale, his body trembled, and though he pushed and tried to flee, he could not get out. He rose, ran wildly, and turned about in frantic confusion.

Then Vayu's son, great and bold in heart, gathered and bound the demon lord, kicked upward, and leapt out of the sea.

Standing at the foot of Atsakanna mountain, with one hand gripping the yaksha's feet, he smashed him against the mountain edge, and by his power the demon's life ended.

Then Lady Wanarin, beloved one, from the time mighty Hanuman left her love, remained behind enduring grief. The young woman was sorrowful and lonely, weeping; alone, empty in breast and heart, her spirit burned like fire. Newly awakened to union, she loved the radiant son of Phra Phai beyond measure; grief at separation multiplied because she was far from the mighty monkey lord. She also suffered over the curse of the wise lord, as if a radiant arrow pierced her heart. With two sorrows almost killing her, she thought and wept.

"Alas, poor me. I have endured suffering in this cave. When I met the soldier of the royal Chakri, I rejoiced that I would be freed from punishment. But the monkey lord has gone and not returned, and the sun has already bent down behind the mountain edge. This breaks the promise he gave. Did he fail to find the asura? Or did he kill the yaksha and return to attend radiant Narai? Ah, my heart, if it is so, I think he will not come back."

"Enough. I will go out and wait, watching outside the cave mouth, so my spirit's doubt may end." Having thought this, the heavenly woman hurried away.

When she reached the smooth stone slab, bright and shining with radiance, the lovely woman sat down upon the splendid seat and waited for glorious Hanuman.

Then Vayu's son, great and brave in heart, after killing the asura and ending his life, carried the demon lord's head and leapt flying back.

When he drew near Angkat mountain, the honored monkey descended, stepped onto the ground, and came straight to the radiant cave.

Then lovely Wanarin, beautiful in form, gazed along the forest path and saw the monkey coming from far away. She rejoiced; her face shone bright like moonlight. She rose from the shining stone and went out to receive glorious Hanuman.

Then Vayu's son, great and brave in heart, saw the lovely Wanarin coming to receive him and was glad. He set Wirun Chambang's head down at the foot of the beautiful mountain, took the hand of the chief royal lady, and entered the sparkling jeweled cave.

Then lovely Wanarin, heavenly young woman, when they reached the crystal-and-gold couch, bowed and spoke: "How was it that you were gone so long, making your loving sister wait in grief? I suffered, grieved, and nearly died. Because of love, I turned my face away and sat waiting; I could not even blink. When I saw you return, I was glad as if I had gained a jewel."

Then Hanuman, radiant in skilled power, heard the heavenly woman's words and comforted the maiden. Stroking her back, he spoke beautifully: "Look, beloved peak of desire. My love for you is like my own eyes and heart. Even when fighting the yaksha lord, I did not forget your lovely body. As I passed the time and came back late, forgive me, lady." Speaking so, he teased and played in happiness, kissing and gazing on all her body, the monkey lord reaching and moving about.

Then Wanarin, young and beloved, pushed away his hand and looked sharply with playful grace. She said in pleading words: "Now the royal business of the incarnate archer is done. Be kind and help me, lovely one, to end my suffering and burning today."

Then Hanuman, glorious and skilled in victory, smiled while answering: "I will help you, maiden, so you may return to serve at the feet of Phra Swayambhu. But I must leave you, lady, and my longing grows beyond measure. Since I will be parted from love, far from your radiant youth, let me cherish the chief royal lady now until my heart is filled." Speaking so, he leaned close in deep affection, kissed her cheek and lips, stroked the heavenly blossom, and played with her in loving delight. Both rejoiced together on the splendid couch.

Then lovely Wanarin, beloved one, having increased love's flavor with the monkey, was nearly overcome with affection. The sorrow that the monkey would part from her made her deeply grieve and sigh. Tears filled her eyes, and she sobbed on Hanuman's lap: "I must part from your feet and return to the royal seat of Kailasa. You remain as servant of the incarnate lord; perform the royal task firmly. As for the enemy host, even if they have power and arrows, do not let them linger in resistance. Spread your might throughout the earth."

Then Hanuman, glorious and skilled in victory, fondled and comforted the lady: "Jewel of my eyes, you are my heart. Were I not afraid of the archer lord, I would not part from the lovely one. I would stay and enjoy union with you and never go away. Your blessing, beloved young beauty, is dear and lovely; it soaks into every hair like heavenly nectar. Go and find happiness at Kailasa. Beloved one, do not forget my love." Speaking so, he lifted the lady from the splendid couch.

When he reached the mouth of the heavenly cave, he set down the beloved young woman, looked at her face, and sighed again and again. "I hardly wish to send you away, young woman, peak of my love. Only because I fear that revered Phra Isuan will be angry and say I overstepped his command. From today I will not see your face, beloved, peak of tenderness." Having spoken, he lifted the young woman, beautiful like a bright bar of gold, and threw her up into the sky with the strong power of the noble monkey. She reached great Mount Kailasa and stayed in her splendid mansion.

Then Phra Harirak the lord saw that the magical decoy, both yaksha and horse, had vanished, and that only the head-cloth and spear had fallen there. He knew that mighty soldier Hanuman had killed Wirun Chambang and ended his life. The king rejoiced greatly, as if he had enjoyed divine treasure, abundant and blessed through the three worlds. Together with his beloved younger brother, he turned his face and waited for glorious Hanuman.

Then Vayu's son, great and brave in heart, after sending off the young heavenly woman, carried the demon lord's head and flew back.

When he reached the battlefield, he descended from the open sky, crawled in to attend the royal Chakri amid the army. Bowing his head, he reported to the solar-line archer king what he had gone to do in battle, and the monkey offered the asura's head.

Then the radiant jeweled Chakri saw the demon's head and rejoiced. The king praised Hanuman: "It is not wasted that you are the son of Phra Phai, peerless man of bold and mighty power. Wherever I send you, you accomplish the royal work, like the powerful jewel discus." Having spoken, he ordered the army to return to Wechayan. The forces left on every side, shouting until the tumult shook, and entered the radiant pavilion.

Then the yaksha messengers saw that the two asura kings had lost their lives and perished. Of horses, chariots, elephants, and troops, not even one remained. Fear made them wish to dive through the earth, and they all went into Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed and reported to Thao Raphanasura the yaksha: "Your life-sharing friend and your powerful nephew raised troops to fight against archer Phra Rama. Both kings and their armies were destroyed by the monkeys. Now the enemy king has withdrawn the brave troops; their shouting shook the earth as they returned to their camp."

Then the ten-headed solar-line lord heard the news, burning like the fire at the end of an age. The demon was stunned silent. Grief pressed tight in his breast until he could scarcely breathe. Without speaking any word, he went into the radiant palace.

He lowered himself onto the throne, laid his hand across his yaksha forehead, and suffered immeasurably. The asura moaned and lamented. He mourned his honored friend, excellent man famed throughout heaven, and his nephew, dear as his own life, brave and fierce in battle. "What a waste that he knew spells and could hide his body, yet came to lose against the power of a forest-monkey enemy, as if he were no noble asura king. Ah, from this day I am beyond suffering, with no one left to advise me. I, though endowed with power, am alone in the work I plan. Looking around, I see no solar-line lord bold enough to go out and fight. My hope is gone like waters beyond measure. No aim remains for anything." He rose and sat again, unable to sleep, sighing deeply until golden dawn-light shone across the sky.

Then he thought of Thao Mali, who dwelt on Sky-Top Mountain, his mighty grandfather, whose power spread everywhere. Whatever he said came to pass, like diamond iron written upon stone. He stood firm in truth. If in anger he cursed anyone, it would happen according to the command of his words and would not deviate. "I will send someone to invite the king to victorious Lanka. Then I will accuse Ram and Lak, twisting the blame toward them. I will make him furious and relate the matter from the beginning. I will arrange harsh words into proper order. I will hide the wrong that is mine, concealing it while making it seem good. He will believe my speech and curse both Lak and Ram. As for the enemy king, surely he will die."

Having thought this, he bathed and dressed, shining with bright splendor, and walked with royal grace out to the vast audience hall.

Together with the host of ministers, elders, royal poets, and solar-line kin, he gave royal command to the two asura nephews: "Nonyawik and Vayuwek, hurry to Sky-Top Mountain. Tell the ancestral lord that now Lanka, the royal city, has humans named Ram and Lak, two brothers fierce and skilled in battle. They command monkey troops and soldiers, and they have come across the great ocean to fight, press, and break us. They have slaughtered the solar-line Brahma-born asuras, ending their lives. The enemy grows bolder every day. Invite the righteous lord to come."

Then Nonyawik and Vayuwek the yakshas received the command, bowed farewell, and came out of the royal hall of victory.

He harnessed Anantasinghat, fierce as a royal lion, and also excellent Mekhamala, spirited like the horse of the sun. He adorned them with gleaming harness, with golden pipal leaves hanging before them. Their two ears bore fine white tassels. They stood beautiful, proud, and restless in power. The work was finished according to the royal command of the nephews of Lanka's lord. They stood by the shining jeweled mounting-block and waited for the two mighty ones to come.

Then Nonyawik and Vayuwek, skilled in battle, when the horses had been harnessed, came with graceful arms to bathe in water.

The two bathed and washed. Scented water spread a sweet fragrance. They wore trousers edged with naga patterns and red cloth marked with rice-offering banners. Each wore side-panels and fluttering hems, bright upper garments with interlacing vine-work, directional plaques, breastplates with engraved designs, and melon-diamond chains over the breast. Gold armlets were wound with dragon forms; their rings were set with rainbow Garudas. Crest jewels, flower garlands, hanging earrings, and ear-pieces shone. Beautiful in body, dress, and bearing, like sons of a royal lion, they moved gracefully and mounted the mind-born horses.

O the two royal horses, mighty in force, able to travel through the air, born of noble Sindhava horse-stock, swift enough to overtake the wind at the end of an age. They lifted ears and tails and cried in joy, leaping and prancing with fierce pride. Their nine-gem harness shone; saddle cloths and cushions were fresh and beautiful. They raised their feet, sprang, and crossed the sky in an instant, swift as wind carrying them straight to Sky-Top Mountain.

Only your nephew remains, and he is hard pressed in fighting the enemy. The subjects and people are troubled, and this time he may be brought to ruin.
