Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Pali's seizure of Montho from Thotsakan, Thotsakan's grief, Phra Angkhot's mediation, the transfer of Montho's unborn son into a goat, Montho's return to Lanka, Angkhot's birth and nursing by Dara, and the preparations for Angkhot's Yamuna bathing rite.

Translation

Pali Seizes Montho

Then brave King Pali came out to the ornamented window, surrounded by ministers and counselors. They lay prostrate as far as the eye could see, like gods attending Kosiy. Seated on the victory throne, he was discussing the affairs of the city. Glancing up, he saw the ten-faced one carrying a woman and floating through the middle of the sky, entering the world-sphere and crossing above the great victorious palace.

He became enraged, stamped his foot, and showed power until the earth itself seemed to shake. "Hey, that wretched Thotsakan! He insults me, unafraid that his life will end." Having spoken, he drew his sword, gnashed his teeth, brandished it in brave display, and aimed to kill the demon lord. He flew upward into the sky.

When he saw the beautiful woman, her face bright like a divine apsara, longing and desire arose in him. He cried out, "Listen, asura. I too am a man. You have acted crudely and without respect, carrying a woman across my city. I will kill you and end your life."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw the monkey barring his way and attacking. The asura grew angry like lightning-fire. "Hey, you beast-born wretch! You speak boldly beyond your station. The sky is the road by which birds, vidyadharas, and gods travel. I move by the road of the sky; I have not stepped on a monkey's head. Since you are proud and want to fight, you will see now."

Then the radiant son of Thao Makhawan heard and answered: "Hey, hey, foolish asura. This woman will be my wife. You meddling wretch, your body will die." Having spoken, he swung the powerful trident and rushed in to attack and kill the kumbhanda.

They stabbed, struck, parried, turned, and wheeled like a spinning discus. Each was strong and brave, and neither yielded. They struck and cut one another in battle.

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed one fought the son of Thao Makhawan, and the demon lord's bodily strength was weakened. With one hand he held the lovely woman, while nineteen hands fought and struck. They thrust, stabbed, wrestled, and struggled in uproar, and the sound thundered up to the sixteenth heaven. Their weapons flashed against one another like corrosive fire. Both were brave and bold without pause; each answered the other's skill.

Then Pali, fierce and strong, leaped, rushed, pierced, and struck, pressing and turning after the asura.

By the noble monkey's speed and strength, Thotsakan could not hold his body steady. Pali stabbed him several times and seized the woman from him.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line, losing his wife as if losing life itself, had tears brimming in the asura's eyes. Love, rage, and regret filled him. He thought nothing of his yaksha body, but hurled himself in, thrusting and striking, mingling close and rushing to take the woman back.

They fought pressed together at close quarters, wheeling swiftly without distance. Each fled and chased without letting go, stabbing and cutting back and forth.

Then brave King Pali held the lovely woman in his left hand and the battle-trident in his right. He kicked the ten-faced yaksha, pointed his finger to mock him, raised his brows, narrowed his eyes, gnashed his teeth, and said: "Hey, Thotsakan of the twenty arms, whose wife will this woman be? She is lovely beyond heavenly apsaras." As he spoke, the monkey kissed the woman, deliberately teasing the asura.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line fought with Pali until he could no longer withstand his power. His thought, strength, and force were exhausted, as if life itself had ended. Unable to win back his wife and at the end of resource, he fled from the monkey.

Then King Pali, skilled in war, having won and seized the lovely woman, flew back into the city.

[Praise of Beauty]

When he reached the golden sleeping chamber, he laid her on the bright jeweled couch. He examined her whole body and saw that every feature was lovely and complete. Her face was beautiful, her brows, eyes, hair, topknot, breasts, lips, cheeks, ears, and golden body all beautiful. Her charm and sharp grace were fitting; every movement and manner drew desire. Then he spoke.

"Beloved beyond love, lovely woman above all affection, I ask you, do not grieve. What is your name, goddess? Are you born from an emperor, or are you a heavenly woman of the radiant sky? Why did you come with the asura? Tell me the truth."

Then young Montho, beloved above all, felt shy and unsettled. She bowed and answered his words: "I am named Montho, rich in grace and deeply pitiful. I am the child of the four great teachers, who raised me in meditation. They brought me and offered me as a servant to Phra Isuaro, royal lord and refuge. Then the ten-faced asura served Phra Suli by lifting Mount Kailasa upright. He asked for the lord's chief queen, and I was granted in place of the goddess. The asura then carried me through the sky."

Pali said, "Dear younger one, beloved, lovely summit of affection, now that you have told the matter, I understand it clearly. The ten-faced yaksha is not worthy of you. My merit and yours must have been made together, for by chance he brought you here to meet me. I will raise you as chief queen under the white parasol, greater than the women of the inner palace. Jewel of the city, have mercy."

As he spoke, he slipped near and reached for her. "Jewel of my eye, do not turn away from me." He embraced and stroked all her body. "Lovely one, do not cast me off."

Montho said: "Mighty lord, think rightly first. Have mercy on me, lord of the earth; it is not good to force and oppress. I am his wife. The crown of lords bestowed me upon the yaksha. If you join with me in pleasure, the karmic bond will cling to you. You are of the powerful solar line; it is not as if you lack chief women. Why love another's wife? The three worlds will despise and blame you."

Pali said, "Jewel of my heart, beautiful one, how skillfully you shape your words. I know clearly what is sin, merit, kindness, fault, and karmic bond. But when you say you are the asura's wife, that claim is not needed. He only touched you in desire; you have not yet joined with him. Among royal customs throughout the earth, if a warrior wins a woman in battle, she is his by right. I remain within the ten royal virtues; it is not that I have not thought."

As he spoke, he leaned close, kissed and teased the beautiful woman, and touched the divine golden flower. The heavenly blossom opened like a golden flower; the bee flew in, bathed in pollen, and tasted sweet fragrance. Phra Phirun rained softly on the flowers, which opened to receive the sun's light.

Then lovely Montho, jewel of the heart, joined with the monkey king. Together they rejoiced and were pleased. She forgot Phra Swayambhu, lord of wisdom; forgot Thotsakan the demon yaksha; forgot exalted Phra Uma; and forgot great Mount Kailasa. Having first known the taste of love, she cherished the son of Thao Kosiy. Every night in splendid Khitkhin city was filled with delight and happiness.

Thotsakan Mourns

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed one reached the divine jeweled palace and entered the sleeping chamber.

He lowered his body and sat stunned in thought. "In vain I have fierce and brave power. I served exalted Phra Isara and struggled to lift great Kailasa; by that I gained the woman and held her close, only for Pali to seize her away. My renowned power has been wasted. I have been defeated by that ill-omened forest monkey.

"Alas, Montho, I never thought you would leave my breast. I held you gently and carried you through the sky, cherishing your beauty. When your eyes looked and met mine, they invited delight in love. When my hand wound around your arm, beloved one, you were pressed against my breast. When you glanced toward me, I kissed you; the scent of your cheeks still clings to my nose. The fragrant sweetness from your womanly body has gone away from me. In all heaven and all three worlds, no young woman can be compared with you." As he lamented, he sobbed in grief, sighed, and mourned.

Then young Nang Akki, beautiful delight of the heart, together with the palace women, saw the kumbhanda king return. His manner was changed from before: he burned in grief and sorrow. He did not bathe or eat; he entered the sleeping chamber in sadness. Each woman came to serve him, crouching and attending with music. Some waved fans and flywhisks, each in her proper station.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw the palace women come to serve him. He looked at their forms and listened to their voices, but none were beautiful or sweet or gentle. The more he thought of young Montho, the more he became bewildered and distressed. He sprang up from the couch and stamped his foot until everything trembled. "Hey, hey, look at these unlucky women. I will kill you and end your lives."

As he spoke, he drew his sword and shouted like thunder. Brandishing it back and forth, he chased the women.

"Hey, ugly wretches, I will cut off your topknots. You bring disaster. Why run away? You all came together to mock me." As he spoke, the lord of the earth turned and chased in confusion.

The palace women trembled and ran in disorder, afraid their lives would end. They circled in panic and cried out shrilly, their spirits lost. Elder attendants and noble women alike were scattered and confused.

When he saw the beautiful women fleeing and hiding without facing him, his fury increased like the fire at the end of an age. Bewildered and oppressed, he brandished the sword, turned, chased, and struck in confusion.

Then the palace women, great and small, saw the victorious demon king raving without composure. Some ran and hid in corners, afraid of the yaksha's punishment. All the singers and eunuchs could only sit and share their distress.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line suffered intense grief and pain, blocked up in his heart. He only cried out and thought of her, and would not come out to conduct royal business. Seven months passed, and his spirit had no ease.

Then King Kumbhakan the yaksha and his younger brother Phiphek saw their fierce elder brother deranged as if his mind had been lost. His condition was changed from before. He did not come out to generals or armies; whether sitting or lying down, he only sighed. When each learned the reason, they suffered grief and distress. They consulted together in confusion and thought: "The holy ascetic Maha Khobut, lord of wisdom, is our elder brother's teacher. We must invite him here to persuade and speak with him."

Having thought this, they ordered a yaksha minister: "Hurry to invite the sage and bring him into the inner palace."

Then the wise minister received the command of the mighty lord and hurried to the leaf-hall.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of Phra Khobut, master of learning, and informed him of the royal command from the younger brothers of the demon king of Lanka.

Then wise and brave Phra Khobut heard. Startled, he rose in haste and grabbed for his ascetic things in confusion. He snatched up a rough bark cloth and put it on crookedly, could not find the tiger-skin to wear, dropped his bag, scattered things in distress, seized his staff, and hurried away.

When he arrived, he went up onto the palace and sat on the radiant nine-jeweled seat, with fan, bag, and palm-leaf screen still in his hand, reclining against a fine pillow.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw the great sage and rejoiced. He raised joined hands, bowed at both feet, sighed again and again, and told the whole matter: "This time I am filled with grief multiplied like burning fire. If I do not have the young woman, your grandchild will lose his life. I ask you, revered grandfather, to favor me and help find a remedy, so that I may have lovely Montho as chief among women."

Then Phra Khobut, teacher strong in meditation, smiled and answered: "Why be troubled over only this? If you desire the lovely woman, go to the sage named Angkhot Muni. He has long been Pali's teacher. Ask him kindly to help speak for you; I think the matter will not be refused. Beloved grandchild, hurry there and bow, entreating the righteous sage." Having spoken, he gave blessing, took leave of the lord of splendid Lanka, descended from the golden palace, and returned to his forest hut.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king received the great sage's plan like divine water poured over his heart. He bathed, washed, and adorned himself, shining like Thao Khanlaihong. Taking up his powerful bow, he flew straight to the hermitage.

When he reached the hermitage of learned Phra Angkhot, he bowed his head at the teacher's feet and grieved.

Then the great teacher, diligent in meditation, saw the ten-headed kumbhanda weeping and lamenting. He spoke fair words: "Why have you come to me and wept? What distress and longing do you have? I am doubtful in spirit."

Then the wise and brave ten-headed one lifted joined hands, bowed at the teacher's feet, and told the whole matter from beginning to end: "I see no place where anyone can be my refuge. I invite you, wise grandfather, to go and help speak to Pali. Ask him to return your servant's wife. It would be like giving life to the yaksha." As he spoke, he bowed his face in grief, as if life would leave him.

[Dialogue]

Then wise and brave Phra Angkhot heard Thotsakan the demon lord. The sage sat silent and thought: "Look at this son of Thao Hatsanai. He has dared to do this without fearing wrong. Phra Isuan, powerful lord, granted this woman as a reward. I must help mediate and ask that his wife be returned to the yaksha, so that glorious Phra Isara will not be displeased beneath his feet."

Having thought this, he said: "Do not be troubled. Leave the matter to me; I will ask for her. Do not grieve or mourn. Wait here, and I will go now."

Having spoken, he wrapped up the crest of his matted hair, put on the proper dress of an ascetic, took his medicine bag and fan, left the hut, and flew away.

When he reached the royal seat of Khitkhin, splendid as the heaven of the Thirty-Three, he came down to earth and went up into the adorned great palace.

Then King Pali, skilled in war, was coming out among the monkey ministers. The lord of the earth saw his teacher, descended from his seat, and bowed in delight. He invited the lord of wisdom up onto the bright divine dais. Then he spoke sweetly and greeted the great sage: "For what purpose has my lord come here?"

Then Phra Angkhot, the great teacher, heard the son of Thao Hatsanai and answered wisely: "I am uneasy in spirit because Thotsakan the yaksha troubles me constantly, grieving and lamenting. He says he set Mount Kailasa upright for Phra Isuan, supreme creator, and Montho was granted as his reward. He was bringing her through the sky when you went out to fight him on the road and seized her for your pleasure.

"You are mighty in power. Why take hold of burning fire? This woman is his wife; the lord himself gave her to him as the reward of victorious Thotsakan. When this is known, it will trouble the lord's feet. You are of the divine line; it is not as if you lack beloved chief women. I ask that you return her to the asura. I think there will be no stain upon you."

Then the radiant son of Thao Hatsanai heard the great sage. The monkey lord sat silent and thought: "This lovely Montho is very hard for me to find. If I oppose the teacher, he will be grieved; if I give her back, I regret losing the maiden."

Having thought this, he answered the righteous sage: "Thotsakan was bold beyond his station. Was it proper for him to ask for Phra Uma and then fly across my city without respect? I did this out of anger. If it is counted as fault, I will send her back. But young Montho is six months pregnant. I cannot yield in this matter because of the beloved child in the lovely one's womb. I will not let it be mixed with asura rank. Holy sage, have mercy."

Then Phra Angkhot, teacher strong in meditation, heard and answered: "Do not be troubled about that. The child in the lovely woman's womb may be given to Your Majesty. I will cut him out and place him in the belly of a goat, so that no harm comes to his life."

Then the son of Thao Makhawan heard the righteous sage's words. Pain multiplied in his heart. He loved her and regretted losing her as much as life itself, but could not refuse the sage. He sighed many times; the monkey lord was caught and helpless. Necessity made him give command, ordering the palace attendants great and small to bring young Montho to bow before the holy one.

Then the women attendants of left and right received the command, bowed farewell, and entered the adorned chamber.

When they arrived, they sat down and bowed at the feet of the chief queen, beloved above all, saying: "The lord of earth commands that the goddess come to him."

Then lovely Montho, beautiful woman, learned her husband's command and hurried out.

When she arrived, she bowed at the lotus feet of the learned teacher and crouched before her husband, waiting to hear the lord's command.

Then the monkey king, skilled in war, looked at the face of his chief beloved and sighed in sorrow. He spoke sweet words: "Jewel of my love, beloved above all, now the victorious teacher has come to ask that you be returned to the asura. I cannot refuse the holy one; I am trapped and heavy at heart. Go according to the command of Phra Isara, who granted you. You will be chief queen beneath the white parasol.

"As for the child in your womb, lovely one, he is like my own life. I ask to cut out only the beloved child and keep him here, to see him in place of your face. Do not suspect any stain. Have mercy on me, beautiful one."

[Lament]

Then young Montho, summit of affection, heard and felt as if she would die. She grieved and said: "Alas, my lord and jewel, will you no longer show mercy to your wife? Will you cast away affection and return me to the asura? At first you commanded me, your servant, saying you would raise me as chief queen. Ah, wretched is a woman born into this world, to have two men as husbands. My birth has been wasted; I am lower than all women." As she spoke, she rolled on the ground, and the beautiful woman lost all composure.

Then Phra Angkhot Rishi saw Montho Devi weeping in grief and fainting. He called for the divine trident, and the son of Thao Makhawan gave it to him. By the power of sacred Veda, the righteous sage cut open the lovely woman's womb.

He lifted out the prince, who was short of the full ten-month term, placed him in the goat's belly by his power, then recited knowledge and blew over it.

By the power of the ascetic's mantra, the wound in her body vanished completely and could not be seen. The lovely woman woke again by the great power of the sage.

Then lovely Montho, beautiful woman, recovered her senses and bowed to the teacher.

Then wise and brave Phra Angkhot took leave of the son of Thao Makhawan and led the lovely woman back to his hut.

When he arrived, he spoke fair words: "Look, Thotsakan the yaksha. I went and spoke with Pali, and I have brought the goddess back. But the lovely woman was pregnant, and because he feared mingling his line with the yakshas, he gave me, a holy man, permission to cut out the son and keep him. Take her and raise her well according to the custom of the world. Rule your royal wealth and victory, increasing in happiness forever."

Then Thotsakan of the splendid Brahma line bowed his head with joined hands, rejoicing beyond measure. He said, "The teacher's kindness I ask to place above my head. If not for the holy one, where would Pali have given her back? Please remain at ease in your forest place." Having spoken, he bowed at the holy one's feet, lifted the lovely woman in his arms, and flew away.

Floating through the sky, he crossed the great ocean. When he reached the continent of great Lanka, he entered the adorned palace.

He set her down on a jeweled dais, bright with pearl-gems, looked carefully at the young woman's beauty, and spoke fair words.

"Beloved beyond love, soft-bodied younger one, jewel of my heart, my merit and yours must have been made together long ago. Therefore the lord granted you to share my chamber and rejoice with me. Before I had delighted in my jewel for even half a day, Pali, deluded in jealousy, went out to wage battle, fought with arrogance, and stole the jewel of my eye away. I have grieved for half a year without even a moment's pause. If my heart had not clung to you, how would I have kept my life? Loving beyond endurance and beyond strength, I hurried to the sage. Today our karmic trouble is exhausted, and the jewel has returned to me."

As he spoke, he teased her in affection, reached out his arm, embraced and stroked the woman, and the asura rejoiced.

Then Montho, beloved above all, pushed his hand away, frowned sharply, and said: "Your Majesty's kindness is immeasurable. I see clearly that your love is true, since you abandoned me and fled away yourself. Because of mercy, it took only half a year. Had you not been merciful, it would have been a very long time."

[Soothing]

Thotsakan said, "Beloved beyond love, young woman surpassing heavenly maidens, I love you as much as my own life. Why speak such lamenting words? You surely know it in your heart. Do not blame me, younger one." As he spoke, he leaned close against her body, slipped his arm around the young woman, praised her eyes, hair, and cheeks, and received her spirit back.

He enjoyed the heavenly golden flower, fragrant and sweet. Clouds gathered thick and dark; thunder sounded and roared. Mekhala lured with the bright jewel; Ramasun wheeled in pursuit through the sky. Crack after crack sounded in tumult, and heavenly rain sprinkled the flowers.

Then lovely Montho, beautiful woman, joined in love with the ten-faced asura. The goddess was moved by desire as if her heart would break. She forgot the monkey king, forgot victorious Khitkhin city, forgot the mighty son, and forgot the palace women. Delighting in wealth and royal fortune, she lived in great pleasure and happiness, attached in devotion to Thotsakan her husband.

Angkhot Is Born

Now the tale will speak of Phra Angkhot Rishi. After he cut open Montho Devi's womb and placed the child in the goat's belly, the sage set up a rite to protect the prince so that no harm or ill event would occur. When the full ten-month term arrived at the victorious time, he entered Khitkhin city.

When he arrived, he went straight up to the palace, sat on the radiant nine-jeweled seat, and spoke fair words: "Look, King Pali. By counting the months and lunar days, I see that the prince placed in the goat's belly has reached the full ten-month term. Today, at the good auspicious time, I will cut him out from the womb."

Then the son of Thao Hatsanai heard the great righteous sage. He bowed and answered: "The kindness of the great teacher I ask to place above my head. As for cutting out the prince, I am glad."

Having spoken, he gave royal command to the young female attendants: "Bring the she-goat now, in time for the victorious moment."

Then the attendants great and small received the command of the lord who sustains the three worlds, bowed, and hurried away together.

When they reached the place where the she-goat was kept, the young women led and surrounded her, guarding the pregnancy, and brought the goat in.

Then the teacher, strong in meditation, collected his spirit in concentration according to the great sacred Vedic rite.

He blew into the she-goat's mouth, cut her open with the sage's knife, lifted out the prince at once, and placed him on a shining golden tray.

Then the elder women and chosen young attendants rejoiced, bowed, and brought the prince out.

They bathed and cleansed Indra's grandson, removing every stain as bright as moonlight, then invited the glorious prince to be placed upon a splendid seat.

Then the learned ascetic gave him a name according to himself, making it a great auspicious blessing: "He shall be named Prince Angkhot, radiant in the solar and Makhawan line." He bestowed blessing and power: "May you live well in lasting happiness." When this was finished, he gave his farewell blessing to King Pali, skilled in war, flew up into the sky, and returned to his place as a righteous sage.

Then Pali, fierce and strong, saw his lovely royal son, with beautiful color and bodily grace. He looked at his face and auspicious marks, and affection grew in him. The child's body was green and clearly formed, with a bright, lovely face. Pali arranged chosen female attendants, all lovely in form, to be given to him, with wet nurses, nurses inside and outside, young pages, and servants complete.

Then Dara, the heavenly woman, loved Angkhot as if he were a child born from her own womb. She lifted the beloved child, placed him on her lap, gently supported his hands, raised his head, and fondly praised him. Out of affection for the prince, she nursed and raised him from the beginning, cherishing him morning and evening in her thoughts. From her breasts, left and right, milk flowed like delicious nectar, until the prince reached ten years of age.

Then the radiant monkey king saw his son prosper and was delighted, his thought fulfilled. He wished to have him bathed in the sea. The lord of the earth gave command to the astrologers, masters of omens: "Examine the auspicious time and hour. I will perform the blessing bath for my royal son in the Yamuna River. Let no dangerous event arise."

Then the chief astrologers received the command of the son of Thao Hatsanai and calculated according to scripture. When they had finished, they bowed at the lotus feet and told the noble monkey king: "For bathing in the river, the good time is still three days away. At eleven strikes there is the fortune of the asura, free from hostile day-signs and death-omens. If that time passes and the sun rises, danger will come. There will have to be battle in the water, but he will be able to seize the other. His fame will be known through the three realms. Even though it is dangerous, the meaning will become good."

Then the radiant son of Thao Hatsanai heard the astrologers offer the auspicious time and moment, and it was like divine water mixed into his heart. He gave royal command, ordering the great ministers to prepare the water-bathing ceremony and to go invite the teacher.

Then the brave great ministers received the command of the son of Thao Makhawan, raised joined hands, and crawled out.

They prepared the great palace, bright as a mansion in the Thirty-Three, spread carpets, set up splendid screens, and hung jeweled garlands and flowers. Then they set royal railings along both sides of the road leading down to the Yamuna bathing place. They erected a divine jeweled pavilion and enclosed it with a great golden net. Beneath the water they also stretched a diamond net at the place where the prince would descend to bathe. Then they sent a mighty monkey to invite the sage.
