Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sita's testimony before Maliwarat, the gods confirming Rama and Sita's account, Maliwarat ordering Thotsakan to return Sita, Thotsakan's refusal and Maliwarat's curse, the monkey army's fury, Sita's return to the garden, Thotsakan's plan to use the Kabilphat spear in a Kala Fire rite, the gods' suffering from the ritual, Phra Isuan sending Pali to break the rite, and Pali's destruction of the fire ceremony.

Maliwarat Judges Thotsakan

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat, seeing the aerial pavilion of the lady, gave royal command to powerful, wise Vishnukam: "Move Lady Sida's pavilion in closer to me here."

Then radiant Phra Vishnukam moved the lady's aerial pavilion inward according to the royal command.

Then young Lady Sida, tender and beloved, opened the shining golden curtain and bowed to the ancestral lord. Glancing aside, she saw her husband seated on the jeweled chariot at the right. She bowed down facing Phra Chakri and grieved with bitter sorrow.

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat saw lovely Lady Sida, beautiful as the unstained moon. Even if compared with Phra Uma, beautiful Sujata, goddess Suchitra, lovely Sunantha, and fair Suthamma, none could equal the young woman's beauty. In all the heavens, across the levels of the gods, the distance between their beauty and Lady Sida's was great. "Is it any wonder that Thotsakan would bind himself in love and bring his clan in Lanka and a hundred thousand warriors to death? Even I, bearer of the ten virtues, am shaken and moved by pity. Only because I possess impartial knowledge can I cut the feeling away without attachment."

Having thought this, he gave royal command: "Look, lovely Sida. You are the royal daughter of what royal city? Where is your young husband's homeland and city? Speak only according to truth. How did Thotsakan come to possess you?"

Then lovely Lady Sida heard the powerful lord, and the maiden answered the royal words: "I was born in a lotus blossom, opened in beautiful radiance beside the waters of the Nairanjara. The sage Janaka found and raised me as his most beloved royal daughter until I gradually grew. He left ascetic observance and entered his city to reign in sovereign power at the secure and happy city of Mithila. He set up a great rite for lifting the mighty bow. Kings from all cities assembled densely in the victorious royal court, while gods, Indra, and sages sat as witnesses. All the kings came to lift the bow of the lord of Kailasa's crest, but it did not move from its splendid seat. The Avatara lifted it by power. King Janaka, my father, rejoiced greatly and performed the wedding rite, consecrating me with Phra Chakri. This matter is known to all, including the gods and Lord Kosiy. Phra Ram then brought me to the city of Ayutthaya. Later he accepted his father's vow and took ascetic form in the forest. I and Phra Lak, his younger brother, followed to serve the king, living beside the Godavari near the mountain slope. One day a golden deer of the forest, bright and lovely in color, came near the forest dwelling. I saw it and admired it greatly; desire arose in my heart, and I begged Phra Ram to follow and catch the deer in the woods. Soon I heard a voice like the voice of my husband, so I drove Phra Lak to go help the righteous lord fight. Then the ten-headed yaksha lord came secretly, seized me, and carried me away. Your beloved granddaughter told him she had a husband, but the asura did not listen. He met Sadayu along the way. The bird barred his path and fought the yaksha, saying he was Phra Chakri's friend, but the asura killed the bird and ended his life. Then he brought me to the pleasure garden, pleading and begging with sweet words. Your granddaughter paid no heed and denounced him. The demon lord bowed and begged for mercy. When I would not consent, he grew angry and threatened the yaksha women. I have brought no falsehood to speak. Matters have gone only this far, ancestral lord."

Then Thao Maliwarat, lord and protector, heard the young woman's testimony. The sky-passing king considered: "This woman's words are honest; no falsehood can be marked upon them. They match the words asked of Phra Ram; in no point are they different." Having thought this, he asked the gods, all who had come down from heaven, including the Three-Eyed Lord and Wetsuwan, bearers of excellent truth: "The words of young Lady Sida, the words of the discus-bearing Avatara, and the words of Thao Thotsakan twist apart according to their minds. You gods have known and seen the matter. On which side are false and true? Speak only direct truth. Do not side with anyone, gods."

Then the lord of Traitrungsa heaven and all the hosts of gods answered together: "The testimony of Phra Chakri and lovely Lady Sida agree without stain. What they say is wholly true in every point."

Then the lord, crest of the sky-high place, heard the words of Thao Makkhawan and the witness of the gods. They wholly matched the words of Phra Rama and heavenly Lady Sida, honest and true without difference. The righteous king therefore asked Thotsakan: "Look, solar-line nephew, ruler of Lanka's kingdom. The hosts of gods and guardian beings, and the lovely Lady Sida herself, have given testimony entirely matching Phra Ram's words. It appears as a stain on the yaksha's side. You, who have wisdom, what will you say, asura?"

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king was driven into difficulty beyond measure. He spoke, twisting and turning in his heart: "As for Sida agreeing with Phra Ram's claim, this matter is not true. If I report to Your Majesty, it may seem that I speak by slander. You, wise and skilled lord, should see by impartial knowledge. The custom of women and men in the world is that love follows beautiful form. Phra Ram is handsome and pleasing; how would Sida not love and desire him? They are both human alike, while I am a kumbhanda and displeasing to her. Therefore she has joined Phra Ram's side and turned the truth away. When I found the lovely one, she said she had no child or husband, so I brought her here. Since it was only two alone with the woman, who in the forest could know the claim? As for Thao Kosiy and the gods who came as witnesses, they are angry because solar-line Intharachit went up to fight fiercely. They have long borne malice toward me, and your grandson still holds doubt, my lord."

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat heard the asura's objection and his doubt toward Lady Sida. The king questioned further by command: "Look, Thotsakan the yaksha. Did Lady Sida hear Phra Ram's words? Did yaksha and monkey attendants tell her? Did the gandharvas tell her? Did Indra in heaven, or who, go tell her so she could say this?"

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha answered with quick wit: "It is hard to know who told her. The hosts of powerful gods and asuras throughout the three worlds are at odds with me. Your grandson has no one who loves him, because the yakshas went out attacking. As Phra Ram, mighty in power, has come killing the yaksha line, the gods rejoice and love him throughout the three worlds. Even the divine lord Makkhawan brought down his mansion-chariot for him, and Matali himself willingly drove Phra Rama's victory chariot. The hosts of gods and guardians volunteer as witnesses; they went and moved Lady Sida's heart so that she would speak to match all this."

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat heard and grew angry beyond measure, as if a trident had pierced his ears. He said: "What is this, Thotsakan? You come so swollen and stubborn through delusion. You doubt the hosts of gods and bind yourself to a false charge. What of Thao Kosiy? His chariot is his own; he can give it. Why say he loves one and hates another? Then you doubt the neutral person, Lady Sida. When I question and seek the truth, you turn back and delay with accusation. Do you mean that I, your ancestral lord, judge with partiality? You speak without truth; not even a child or a woman would do so. Do you think the gods desire the four ruinous states? When I examine the matter, I have the truth. The words of Phra Ram and Sida agree from beginning to end, and the words of all the gods agree with them. Every charge you made has been falsely joined together to seem firm; when investigated, it is not truth. It is all vile and unlucky wickedness. I see clearly that you dared to steal the chief queen of Phra Ram Chakri. Asura, quickly return Lady Sida."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha heard the honored ancestral lord order him to return young Sida. His resentment was beyond measure, like a hundred poisoned guns striking him. Forcing his heart, he bowed at the lotus feet: "May Your Majesty show mercy. Sida's speech has no truth. She appears like a wanton woman, deliberately setting me at odds with Phra Rama, and my ancestral lord sees it as good. As for sending the woman to radiant Phra Ram, that would be multiplied disgrace. The three worlds would mock and blame me, saying I lost to humans and monkeys, unable to withstand them in battle. Where would I hide my face? The shame of heart is beyond counting."

Then Thao Maliwarat, lord and protector, heard Thotsakan speak, and his powerful heart grew still more displeased. He pondered silently for a long while, then gave a proclaimed command: "You do not dwell in the ten virtues, so you twist the matter as you please. If Sida is returned now, is it you, yaksha, who returns her yourself? I speak before the gods: who would go beyond that to blame you? Yet you deliberately speak in turns, resisting openly and arranging hidden words. You look like a vile fool. Who will still count your face as good?"

Then Thao Thotsakan the yaksha heard the ancestral lord's words, and they were like fire pressed against his heart. Anger filled and tightened his breast until he could hardly speak. He was silent for a moment, then reported: "As for making me return Lady Sida, Phra Ram has killed so many solar-line friends and kinsmen. Even if I gave her back, will my dead kin return to life? Your grandson is counted a peerless man. I will die fighting rather than return the beautiful lady. I will ask to attack and kill the enemy. Let us see who is the better one."

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat heard the ten-headed kumbhanda press on in arrogance. In wrath he stamped his foot and roared a lion-like command: "Ho, vile wretch, fool! You come shamelessly and speak. What a waste that you are of Brahma's line, famed in power through the ten directions, possessing great wealth and estates. Is it right that you still say you do not love your honor? I speak for your good, but you do not listen. Proud, vile, and reckless, you bring crooked-hearted ruin upon yourself. You have no sense of pain or shame, bowing to a woman over your own head. Given to greed and delusion, you take evil as good. Since you delight in wickedness and do not love the solar-line yakshas, may disaster and ill fortune be yours, and may nothing lasting remain. If you go out to war, may you die by the weapon, the radiant arrow of four-armed Phra Ram, losing to his power every day." Having spoken, he commanded wise Vishnukam: "Take lovely Sida back to the flower garden."

Then Sukhrip, Hanuman the noble monkey, Chomphuphan, mighty Angkhot, and the eighteen crowned ministers all heard Thotsakan the demon lord speak in arrogant, stubborn delusion. Each grew angry, clenched his teeth, and his hands itched to raise weapons. Some said they would cut off his heads and display them; some leapt to go kill him; some said they would split his chest; some would hack his body for birds to eat; some would cut off arms and hands; some would cut away nose and ears; some would split his mouth and drag out his tongue, satisfying their hearts against the vile asura. Some said: "Why should the chief queen, with all the gods present, return at all? Invite the goddess to go to the pavilion." All the monkeys rose together throughout the army, shouting in uproar and brandishing weapons like the fire at the end of an age.

Then Phra Chakrakrit, whose power is famed in every direction, saw the mighty forces bold, fierce, and gnashing their teeth. He spoke sweet words to his splendid younger brother: "You who share my life, these troops of ours are all angry, leaping and ready to spring in to kill the yaksha, like lions seeing deer, intent only on taking life. Yet I cannot fail to stop them, for where would the yaksha escape?" Having spoken, he gave command: "Listen, mighty soldiers. Do not harm Thao Thotsakan. The righteous ancestral lord would reproach us. Before long the asura will perish. Where could he go beyond my hands?"

Then lovely Lady Sida heard the ancestral lord command Vishnukam to take her, the lovely lady, back to the pleasure garden residence. She suffered and grieved deeply because she would be far from her righteous husband. She glanced at the powerful lord, the chief queen sorrowful and distressed; she looked at Phra Lak, the younger brother, and tears filled her eyes. She bowed her head at the feet of the great ancestral king, took leave of the lord of the three worlds, and the young woman sobbed in grief.

Then radiant Phra Vishnukam led the lady's aerial pavilion back to the pleasure garden.

Then Thao Raphanasura, bold in heart, was wounded by the ancestral lord's words denouncing him. The demon king burned like fire. The more he thought, the more resentment filled the yaksha's breast. "Look at Thao Mali! Good. We shall see. If I die, it is finished. If my life has not ended, I will raise the fourfold kumbhanda army and destroy his life." Having thought this, he commanded Lothan to turn the royal chariot back. Without bowing to the ancestral lord, the asura returned into the city.

Then radiant Thao Maliwarat, when Thotsakan had returned to the city, spoke fair words: "Look, Phra Ram and Phra Lak, mighty through the radiant arrow. May you be blessed and enduring; may your power be famed in all three realms. As for unrighteous Thotsakan, do not let him withstand your power. Let all evil ones who raise harm remain beneath your lotus feet. I, your ancestral lord, take leave of you now and return to Sky-Top Mountain, my royal seat." Having spoken, he dismissed his attendants and flew through the clouds.

Then the lord of the three worlds, surpassing the worlds, when the honored ancestral lord had returned to Sky-Top Shiva's realm, dismissed the troops. The monkey soldiers, great and small, left the victorious battlefield and returned to the shining pavilion.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha, when he reached the asura residence, entered the sleeping chamber.

He lowered himself onto the couch, his hand across his yaksha face. Resentment pressed tight in his breast, and his body burned as if heaped with fire. Ashamed before gods and guardians, the yaksha king sighed deeply. "Alas, this time I see no one left who can be my refuge. I counted on the ancestral lord, but he has joined the two humans." He rose and sat again in confusion upon the splendid bed.

Then young Montho, peak of love, learned that her honored husband had gone to the righteous ancestral lord and returned without bathing, eating, or enjoying the heavenly women. This was strange and different from every day, so the lovely woman hurried out.

When she reached the shining, splendid bed, she sat near the king's feet and bowed with joined hands.

Then the ten-faced yaksha lord saw his beloved wife, life-companion, come to attend him at the bed. He rose and spoke fair words: "Look, young beloved. My resentment is beyond counting because of the wise ancestral lord. I invited him, hoping he would help my burning distress, but the king did not think of me as a grandson. He saw others as better than his own line; the sky-passing king showed no mercy. He judged the matter completely and ordered that lovely Sida be returned. When I did not follow his words, the king was angered in spirit. He deliberately cursed me with fierce and vile words, denouncing me without regard for my face. I am ashamed before the hosts of gods and the monkey armies. This disgrace is beyond thought; it wounds my heart as if struck by an arrow. My wisdom is exhausted, lovely one. Beloved, what should I think to do?"

Then lovely Montho, chief queen, heard her husband's words. The lady was stunned through her whole body, as if Yama himself had come to kill her life. She bowed with joined fingers and answered: "Listen to your wife and do not grieve. Calm your heart first. Use wisdom to turn and solve the matter. Your Majesty is mighty in power and has subdued the whole earth. If he does not count you as his grandson, there is no reason to burn and be troubled. Think out the war so victory may come to our side."

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha heard as if the nectar of heaven had washed over the demon's body. He remembered the Veda of his radiant father, together with the Kabilphat spear, which righteous Phra Isuan had granted as a pair, for subduing all enemy hosts in the ten directions so none could resist. It was better than all weapons in the three worlds and could bring victory over enemies. The demon king rejoiced and told the chief queen: "I have one Veda. I remember it now, maiden. I will go set up the Kala Fire rite near the foot of great Mount Meru, at the beautiful Krot-sand shore, to worship the victory spear Kabilphat. It will have power and force enough to subdue all three worlds. What then of humans and forest monkeys? This time they will perish as I intend. Even the ancestral lord, wise and true in speech, I will end his life by the power of the sacred jeweled spear. As for Makkhawan and all the gods who went as witnesses together, I will mold their images and worship them in the fire-pit of the great rite. When the full three days are complete, Thao Kosiy and all of them will die. I need not attack and kill them in battle. This time we shall see." Speaking so in great joy, he clapped his twenty hands and laughed until dawn's colored light arose. Then the demon went out to the victorious audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the throne. Ministers and officers, great and small, lay prostrate everywhere like stars encircling the moon among clouds. He gave royal command to the demon Mahothon: "You command the troops and go to great Mount Meru. Build a splendid ritual hall by the ocean at the Krot-sand slope: thirty-nine chambers in ordered tiers, adorned with red cloth. Set up the worship materials: red radiant flowers of every kind, seven selected offerings, sacrificial leaves, incense, candles, and lamps. Also gather seven shining jewels and clean red clay from seven places. Find everything complete according to the manual, for I will mold images of the gods and worship them in the fire."

Then Mahothon, great minister, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

He levied the officials, soldiers, and civil workers on left and right. When all were ready according to the royal command, they hurried away together.

When they reached Mount Meru, at the Krot-sand shore near the mountain foot, they went straight down to the ground beside the shore of the great ocean.

They built the ritual hall, broad, long, and tall, thirty-nine bright chambers, all spread with red adornment. They covered the ceiling and hung jeweled lamps amid tassels and fragrant flower garlands. They set up a splendid throne and raised a shining great white parasol. Outside they arranged royal fences, rows of banners, and parasols in alternation, tying red curtains with golden vines; the floor was strewn with golden sand. They set out worship offerings, flowers, incense, and rows of candles; the lamps shone bright. Everything was finished according to the command.

Then the bold twenty-armed lord commanded the wise ministers to prepare the demon troops. "Select only fierce, mighty ones, ten oceans of yakshas. I will go to Mount Meru, to the beautiful Krot-sand shore."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha received the command, bowed farewell, and came out of the royal hall.

He arranged six battle-seasoned divisions of soldiers, bold and fierce. The vanguard wore moon-colored coats and held spears ready to stab. Next came troops in plantain-colored coats, brandishing golden lances. Next came troops with red-barreled guns, wearing black coats with interlaced patterns. The right wing wore green-blue coats and held damascened swords in both hands. The left wing wore golden-flower coats, every one carrying halberds in graceful motion. The rear guard held every kind of weapon, brandishing them in tumult. The six divisions, a full ten oceans of troops, crowded in loud commotion.

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha, when the troops had been arranged, came to bathe.

He bathed and washed his body in delight, wearing fragrant scent whose smell spread richly. His robe was patterned with nagas; his trousers had ruby-colored curved borders. His side-panels and fluttering hems flicked at their ends; his jeweled armor shone. His breast-band bore dragon patterns; his directional plaques were beautiful; chains crossed his breast. His emerald breastplate was a Garuda net; gold bracelets were set with topaz and ruby; armlets were coiled naga forms, and rings were in splendid Garuda settings. Wearing a great diamond crown, crystal earrings, and pearl ear-pieces, he took the shining Kabilphat spear and came to mount the beautiful heavenly chariot.

O the royal chariot: its jeweled wheels were set with alternating colors; its curved yoke was all gems; its shining pavilion was like a heavenly mansion. Five peaks glittered, set with jewels, hanging high in the sky. It was yoked with mighty royal lions, leaping and carrying it through the air. High insignia, sunshades, peacock parasols, and jeweled standards shone bright. Gongs, parade drums, and curved trumpets sounded; armies crowded the upper sky. The chariot's sound and the voices of ten hosts of warriors shook earth and sky in tumult. They crossed the ocean waters, hurrying the troops along the clouds.

When he reached Mount Meru, he drove the chariot down from the sky and set the asura troops beside the ocean landing-place. Then he gave a lion-like command, proclaiming firmly to the warriors: "Set guards to protect against danger. Let no incident arise." Having spoken, the yaksha king removed the royal ornaments from his body, left the jeweled chariot, and went down to bathe in the ocean.

He cleansed his body of every stain with fragrant water scented like pollen. He wore a lovely red robe, bright like the dawn sun. He anointed his hair and bound it beautifully like a great teacher of yoga, wrapped a radiant ruby-colored head-cloth, wore a pink shoulder-cloth crossing his body, put on padmaraga prayer-beads and three shining necklaces, took the Kabilphat spear in graceful hands, and turned toward the ritual hall.

He sat upon the jeweled throne beneath the great white parasol. Then he worshiped with incense, candles, flowers, and seven shining jewels. He mixed clay from seven places and molded images of all the gods, great and small, through all six heavenly chambers, all who had gone as witnesses. When finished, he kindled the fire in the middle of the vast ritual hall, raised his hands in worship, and chanted the Veda spells.

When a full thousand recitations were complete, the fire blazed with fierce light. He picked up the images of the gods and threw them into the middle of the fire. Two hundred forty thousand yojanas of earth roared and shook; the ocean rose in waves, and the asura recited the Veda again.

By the force of the expert mantra that the wise lord had granted, heat reached the gods as if they were touched by the fire at the end of an age.

Then the lord of Traitrungsa heaven and all the hosts of gods in every level suffered heat through their bodies. It was as if fierce fire burned them; sorrow multiplied and did not ease. They rose and sat in confusion, with no comfort at all. Kosiy looked with divine sight throughout all regions great and small, and saw Thotsakan setting the Kala Fire near the foot of Mount Meru, molding images of the gods to worship in the fire-pit, intending to kill them all. Therefore he led the honored gods and walked to attend Phra Suli.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of radiant Phra Swayambhu and reported: "The ten-headed asura has now gone to set up a rite, consecrating Kabilphat to make its power shine. He has molded images of the gods in heaven and is throwing them into the fire to kill their lives. This matter is very great; we see no one who can break it. If we delay, the magic will grow strong and the gods will die. The asura will grow still more swollen in unrighteous, vile boldness. Wise and skilled lord, please show mercy."

Then the lord of the worlds, surpassing the worlds, learned that the ten-headed asura had gone to establish the Kala Fire rite. He gave a divine royal command to Makkhawan and the gods, great and small: "As for the victorious Kabilphat spear, I gave it to the yaksha lord Latsatian. The power of this jeweled spear can destroy enemies in all three worlds. Now the ten-faced asura, my beloved child, has inherited it." Having spoken, he gave a decree to mighty Chitubot: "Go find Pali the god and bring him to Mount Kailasa."

Then radiant Chitubot the god received the command, raised joined hands, displayed power, and flew away.

When he reached Yama's divine residence, wide and greatly delightful, he went straight into the victory-mansion of mighty Pali the god and said: "Phra Swayambhu has issued a divine royal summons. Go attend beneath the feet of supreme Phra Isuan."

Then radiant Pali the divine son learned that Phra Suli had commanded him to come. He dressed himself in splendid ornaments, gathered his attendants great and small, came out from the shining mansion, displayed mighty power, and flew away.

When he arrived, he bowed his head to radiant Phra Swayambhu amid all the gods gathered together.

Then supreme creating Phra Isuan, seeing Pali the god, spoke as the righteous lord: "Look, mighty one, wise and brave. Now the ten-headed fool has set up a Kala Fire rite and is consecrating the spear at the Krot-sand shore near the foot of great Mount Meru. He has molded images of the gods and is throwing them into the fire. If the full three days are completed, the gods in every rank will die, and the asura's Kabilphat spear will grow immense in power. For Phra Lak and Phra Ram, war against him will become very hard. You, powerful one, take your attendants down to help destroy the asura's rite. Then the hosts of gods will escape danger and have lasting happiness."

Then Pali the divine son, skilled in battle, received the fair divine command and answered with joined hands: "As Your Majesty commands me to go down and destroy the great rite of the yaksha, I ask to volunteer in this matter and not let the dust beneath your feet be troubled." Having reported, he bowed to supreme Phra Isuan, then transformed and altered his body together with all the gods.

In an instant he became Pali, seeming to brandish a sword. All the attendant gods became monkeys holding every kind of weapon, each one possessing power, crowded and densely packed, like the troops of the lord who bears Garuda when he crossed the ocean to Lanka.

Then Phra Swayambhu, lord and protector, saw that he had become mighty Pali and that the troops were all monkeys. They displayed power until Mount Kailasa shook. He gave a blessing: "May you be enduring and grow in welfare. As for Kabilphat, the victory spear that I gave to the yaksha, let it not touch the bodies of you or the monkey-gods."

Then Pali the divine son, bold in heart, bowed his head and received Phra Isuan's blessing. All took leave in homage. Each displayed power until Kailasa shook and thundered; he led all the divine troops and flew away.

When they reached Mount Meru, at the Krot-sand slope of the great shore, they saw the splendid ritual hall and descended to the earth.

Then they displayed power, making every place utterly dark, and led the attendant gods leaping in to tear away the mountain.

The sound thundered throughout the sky; golden mansions shook in every rank. They threw it down into the middle of the ritual hall and rushed in together to strike the asuras.

Then the yaksha soldiers fell dead scattered everywhere. Panicked, they ran, split apart, and broke ranks.

Then the twenty-armed lord heard the great noise. The demon opened his eyes and looked. Seeing mighty Pali with the host of monkeys, he wondered in amazement: "How can this be? This one lost his life to the sacred arrow of radiant Phra Ram. Why has he returned to life and come to fight? Most likely Phiphek told the matter, and ugly Hanuman has transformed into wicked Pali to break the Kala rite. I will destroy that forest monkey by my power and not spare his life." Having thought this, the demon king sprang in and brandished the spear to attack.

Then radiant Pali the god dodged aside swiftly and leapt in to fight the demon.

With his left foot he stepped on the asura's knee, while his right hand brandished the sword. He parried Kabilphat repeatedly and struck Thotsakan the demon lord.

Then the ten-headed solar-line lord, bold in heart, was struck by the victorious divine weapon. His pain was as if his life would end. His strength diminished and fell away; he could hardly stand and fight. With no power or thought left for combat, he fled to the city of Lanka.

Then radiant Pali the divine son and his attendant troops put out the Kala Fire. Some snatched things away; some poured water over it. When the blazing flames were gone, they took the images of the gods and threw them into the Sithandorn sea.

When the asura Thotsakan's mighty rite had been fully destroyed, he changed back from monkey form and traveled through the sky to attend the wise lord.
