Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thotsakan's return after the broken Kabilphat-spear rite, Montho's counsel that Phiphek is the true source of the danger, Thotsakan's march to kill Phiphek, Rama's army meeting him in battle, Phra Lak being struck by the Kabilphat spear while protecting Phiphek, Rama's grief over Phra Lak, Thotsakan's confidence that the wound cannot be cured, the divine rain that revives Rama and the army, and Hanuman's night mission for the medicines and grinding stones.

Thotsakan Turns Against Phiphek

Then brave-hearted Thao Raphanasura reached his splendid residence, and the demon king entered his inner sleeping chamber.

He lowered himself onto the couch, laid his hand across his face, and wept. He was pierced by grief, sighing again and again; his heart burned twice over. "I have made war and lost advantage to the radiant pair, Lak and Rama. Not only that: that Pali, who was destroyed, has come back to life again and become strength for the enemy. In battle, killing him is beyond thought. Then the solar line in Lanka will be ended, and I will not know where to turn my face or whom to seek. Alas for me. It is as if I am swimming in the belly of a vast ocean. Whatever rite or undertaking I perform, none comes out as my heart intends." He kept rising and sitting down on the couch, miserable as if an arrow had pierced his mind. Heat and poison troubled his heart, and sleep would not come to him.

Then lovely Montho, beloved woman, saw her royal husband return without saying anything. He had gone straight into the sleeping room, with a strange manner as if fevered. She led the inner ladies in attendance up to wait upon the asura lord.

When she reached him, she bowed her head and addressed the lord of the yakshas: "The rite has not yet completed its three nights. Why has Your Majesty returned?"

Then the ten-faced yaksha lord heard his chief queen and answered by command: "The ritual I had established could not fulfill my intention, because that Pali who had died has come back to life. He brought monkey troops to attack and destroyed the Kala Fire altar. Our forces could not withstand their power; they died in ruin, thick across the ground. At first I thought Hanuman had worked deception, transforming himself to make us doubt. Only when I fought body against body did I know clearly that it was Pali. It seems Lord Phra Isuan, crest-jewel above, has joined the two radiant brothers, Lak and Rama, and restored Pali's life. What does my dear one think I should do?"

Then young, lovely Montho heard the king's command saying that Pali had returned to life. She bowed her head to the lotus feet and addressed the yaksha king: "This claim that mighty Pali has returned to life is very wrong. Who dies and then comes back? I have seen no such thing in all the three worlds. Lord Phra Isuan, who guards and sustains the world, is the world's pillar and does not act unrighteously. The one who destroyed the rite was certainly Hanuman the monkey, because Phiphek the kumbhanda tells him everything, every time. Whatever you do, he brings ruin on it, damaging the work and the yaksha line. When your younger brother dies, I think your enemies will be ended."

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar yaksha line heard his chief queen. The asura saw truth in everything she had said and was full of joy; his face shone like the moon. He stroked her back and comforted the lovely one: "You are the heart of my eyes. Your thought, that I should sever the battle there, is deep indeed. That asura Phiphek is like a shadow clinging always to my body. Whatever I do, he knows in advance and tells the enemy how to break it. He cares nothing for kin or friends; he means to become great in the demon city. Tomorrow I will lead my armies out and kill him, ending his life with the victorious Kabilphat spear, ending that thorn among enemies." Speaking so, he leaned close and played with her in joy, intimate with the queen, then fell asleep on the couch.

When the shining sun rose and golden light brightened the sky, the asura woke from the splendid couch, bathed in the waters, put on the ornaments proper to his rank, adorned with radiant nine-gem splendor, and went from the jeweled chamber into the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white umbrella's shade, while hosts of yaksha ministers bowed in crowds before him. Then he gave royal command, ordering Mahothon the demon minister: "Muster the fourfold army. I am going to kill the enemy."

Then Mahothon, the yaksha minister, received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out from the victorious royal hall.

He mustered the bold fourfold host and set it into a great battle array. Elephant officers harnessed the elephants in the inner ranks, guarding the camp, charging, leaping, and attacking the army. The mahouts all wore red shirts and swung hooked spears back and forth; shields, side-armor, and howdah coverings were layered, ready with every weapon. Horse officers harnessed Sindhava horses, biting their bits, restless and proud in strength; their riders wore dark green shirts and held lifted lances braced for combat. Chariot officers yoked war chariots with fierce tigers, lions, and bulls; the charioteers wore patterned vine shirts and flourished bows in their hands. Infantry officers inspected the battle troops, who all carried flashing weapons. Officers and common soldiers in black patterned shirts made a loud, excited tumult.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha, when the ordering of the army was complete, came to bathe in the waters.

He bathed his body in jeweled streams of scented water, then put on fragrant unguents and flower essences. He slipped into curved-trim trousers and a kinnar-patterned cloth. His hip-cloth and hanging side-flaps bore swan-vine designs; his body armor flashed like diamond. Directional plates were set with shining rubies; a chest ornament, cords, and jeweled chains crossed him. His bracelets were carved gold, his rings set with jewel clusters, his crown, earrings, and ear-flower ornaments blazed with splendor. His figure and bearing were beautiful, like a king of battle. He seized the power-breaking Kabilphat spear and went up onto the victory chariot.

O chariot, royal war chariot: its wheel-rims were adorned with crystal, its throne all tiered gold, its jewel-work crushed and set into side-rails. Garudas grappling nagas stood in rows; lions sprang forward among upright scrollwork. The pavilion and its layered screens rose with five peaks as if made by magic. Two thousand royal lions were yoked to it. Lothan, club in hand, stood as driver and drove it forward by power. Royal standards and regalia shone splendidly. Curved trumpets and foreign trumpets blended their sound with pipes, drums, and gongs. The troops shouted until the earth thundered, and the brave army hurried on.

When they reached the edge of the battlefield, he had the great army stop and set itself firmly along the forest border in the formation called Fierce Tiger.

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak, lord who guards and creates, when the sun's rays had gone out and the moon brightened the clouds, entered his sleeping place. With his hand laid across his brow, he longed for his chief queen. The lord sighed and said: "Ah, my life's own heart, by now what has become of my jewel? Has Thotsakan, bound to enmity, returned to punish you? You must also suffer because of separation from me, grieving as if life itself were leaving. Will the city's beloved one eat only tears?" The more he thought, the more sorrow grew. The powerful king was sunk in grief and could not sleep until the last watch of the night. Birds called in offering of sound; the sound of crickets continued softly. The wind carried the scent of flowers, and the sun's light touched sky and earth.

He bathed and purified himself, put on shining splendid ornaments, left the splendid jeweled chamber, and went out before the victorious pavilion.

All the soldiers from both cities were ready, the monkey officers great and small. As soon as he heard the mighty sound, the king asked the astrologer: "Yesterday was strange. Why did the ten-faced yaksha king not array his army and come out to fight us? Now what asura is this, leading a powerful army? Is he some friend or kinsman, or has he himself come to trouble us?"

Then Phiphek, the yaksha lord, heard Phra Chakri's command. He raised joined hands, took the hour, and by the Three Vedas knew the matter as clearly as if a god had come down to tell him. Free from doubt, he bowed and answered the royal command: "The battle was idle because Thotsakan the yaksha was angry with the hosts of gods. He said they had borne witness for the Four-Armed Lord. Secretly he went to perform a rite at Mount Meru's peak, restoring his father's Kabilphat spear so that its power would blaze like the fire at the end of an age. Then he took earth from seven landing places, molded figures of the gods in heaven, and threw them into that altar-fire to kill their lives away. Lord Phra Isuan knew the matter and sent brave Pali down from heaven to destroy the rite. The demon lord was even more enraged. He believes that I, your servant, reported the matter to the solar-line king who bears the discus. So he has raised his yaksha armies in a rush. He will kill me, the servant at your feet, ending my life with the mighty Kabilphat spear. May Your Majesty have mercy."

Then Phra Chakri, the radiant jewel, heard Phiphek the asura and answered by command: "Your own person is like my heart. How could I let your life be lost? Do not tremble or be afraid; why fear that fool?" Then he ordered Phra Lak of the solar line: "We will fight the yaksha. Guard Phiphek the asura carefully. Let no harm come to him. As for mighty lord Sukhrip, arrange the brave monkey troops. Choose only those with skill and wisdom. We will go destroy the asura."

Then the radiant son of the Sun received the command of Phra Chakri, raised joined hands, and went out.

He arranged the battle array, setting Nilrat as the vanguard. The reserve was Pingkhala's monkey force, bold and battle-skilled. The troops of Chomphu city were all gods descended from heaven; they entered the army of lovely Phra Lak, each holding every kind of weapon. The forces of Khitkhin city, born from divine monkey stock, were assigned as the force of the Lord Who Rides Garuda; every one of them was terrible in immense power. The warriors of the two cities, famous in power through every direction, crowded the surface of the earth and stood ready, awaiting the Four-Armed Lord.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, invited mighty Phra Lak and went to bathe in the waters.

The two kings washed and bathed. Fragrant streams carried the scent of flower essence. Their trousers were set with ruby-red jewels and patterned at the hems with naga scrollwork. The elder brother wore divine cloth of green-gold ground, interwoven with shining gold; the younger brother wore purple patterned cloth, like dancing kinnaras. Their hip-cloths and side-flaps bore curling vines and green emerald ornaments. Their upper garments were flower-gold in color; belts and waist-guards were notched and set with jewels. Engraved girdles, red diamond chains, directional plates, necklaces, and chest ornaments shone; armlets, bracelets, rings, nine-gem crowns, and jeweled ear ornaments blazed. Each bore the art of the bow, filled with battle power, and went up onto Indra's chariot.

O two royal chariots: their hubs, rims, and whole wheels were crystal; ruby clasps and fittings adorned them. Indra had given both chariots. The elder's great victory Vejayanta chariot was inlaid with emerald, with carved jewel panels in layered rows and five bright peaks. The younger lord's chariot shone entirely with pearls and celestial gems; its pavilion, set with rubies, had a similar lovely form. They were like the chariots of moon and sun, radiant with shining brilliance. Celestial horses drew them, and godly sons drove them swiftly. Phiphek came beside Phra Lak's chariot in the midst of brave troops. Royal regalia was complete and splendid; pipes, drums, and gongs sounded in tumult. The wheels thundered and shook the worlds; dust rose to the sky. The monkeys roared and the army hurried the royal chariots onward.

When they arrived, he had the monkey ministers great and small halt and set themselves in battle array close beside the asura army.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha stood on his chariot in the middle of the army. Seeing the monkey host advance, he gave royal command: "Ho, demon ministers of the vanguard! Split out into wings like a crow and attack the monkeys, breaking them by force."

Then battle-brave Paowanasura received the order of the twenty-armed king and drove the troops in to attack.

Then the yaksha vanguard troops each displayed their power and drove in to harry the forest monkeys.

Left wing held against right wing, hurling weapons great and small. The right wing pressed forward and drove back the monkey left. The center surged, rushed, stabbed, shot crossbows, bows, and arrows, and charged with swords, halberds, javelins, and spears, cutting through in chaos.

Then Nilrat of the vanguard saw the asuras striking in force. He drove the monkey troops out to fight them.

The right wing received the left, moving quickly as a turning wheel. The left wing received the kumbhandas' right; the center drove through with an assault. Demon troops died in ruin by monkey hands. The monkeys shouted in tumult, grappling and pressing forward; the asuras could not withstand their power.

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha saw his troops dead in heaps, scattering back to the front of the victory chariot. His anger rose; he clenched his teeth and stamped his foot until everything shook. He drew his mighty enchanted arrow, set it on the string, and loosed it with power.

Mountains and seas trembled in terror; the thunder reached Dusit heaven. It struck the enemy monkey hosts, and they died in ruin, piled thick together.

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai himself, saw the arrow of ten-headed Thotsakan strike his armies and kill them. He drew the Phlaiwat arrow onto the string, fixed his eyes to kill, pulled with mighty strength, and loosed it.

Its sound was like thunder. It became countless weapon-arrows and struck the powerful fourfold army, killing them in heaps across the ground. As for the monkey hosts who had died, all regained life, rose, mocked the asura lord, and lifted their weapons.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king looked through with twenty eyes, seeking Phiphek the kumbhanda. Seeing him beside Phra Lak's chariot, the yaksha lord became violently enraged. His ten mouths gnashed their teeth; his hands itched to kill him. He ordered Lothan, his capable charioteer, to drive the chariot through the troops and enter battle against Phra Lak.

Then the younger brother of the Lord of Hari's line, bearer of the discus, saw the ten-headed yaksha lord breaking in to attack. He seized the Agniwat arrow, mighty and powerful, set it on the string to destroy the demon lord, and loosed it.

The victorious arrow struck the curved front of Thotsakan's chariot, and the splendid pavilion broke and fell down by its power.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king saw Phra Lak shoot arrows against him. The asura seized his discus and hurled it.

It blazed like the sun. The sky roared and trembled. It became a mass of flame, spreading and burning among the monkey host.

Then the battle-skilled younger lord saw the yaksha hurl the discus into burning fire. He seized an arrow and shot at once.

It became a torrent of rain that put out the flames. Then it pursued and shattered the yaksha's discus into fine ash and dust, while asuras died in heaps.

Then Raphanasura the yaksha fought while looking across the field, meaning to kill Phiphek. He shouted: "Ho, wicked traitor! I raised you until you became great, and you know no gratitude at all. You went over to the enemy and told the tricks and strategies of war, so that they could kill the yaksha race. Even if you gain rule over the city, what army will you have left? You are my own younger brother and still you have no thought for that. I will destroy your yaksha life with the mighty Kabilphat." Saying this, he hurled it at once.

Then radiant Phra Lak, blessed with glory, feared it would strike Phiphek the asura. The king swept it aside with victorious skill. The Kabilphat slipped and struck his body. He could not remain standing; he fell from the jeweled chariot, as if his life had almost ended.

Then Phra Hari Rak, creator and guardian, saw Phra Lak struck by the kumbhanda's spear. The righteous king grew fiercely angry. He drew the Brahmastra, sacred and mighty in power, set it on the string to destroy the yaksha lord, and loosed it.

The worlds and universe roared; Mount Sumeru trembled and shook. It struck the powerful fourfold army, killing them in heaps. Then the Brahmastra flew straight and struck the body of ten-faced Thotsakan, making him fall from his jeweled chariot by Phra Chakri's might.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king, struck by the arrow, was pained in every limb and almost lost his life. He steadied himself, raised his hands above his head, remembered Brahma's merit, clenched his teeth, held his strength, and recited spells and knowledge.

When seven recitations were complete, he stroked downward and the arrow slipped from the yaksha's body. He would have returned to contend in power, but his weapons for battle were all gone. The sun's light had also ended, so he ordered the great armies to withdraw. With shouts that shook and rolled, they returned into the royal city.

Then the radiant solar-line lord, Phra Narai himself, saw the ten-headed asura withdraw his army back into Lanka. The righteous king descended from Vejayanta, sunk in sorrow and grief, and ran to his younger brother with the strength of the Lord Who Rides Garuda.

When he reached him, he seized the Kabilphat spear, held it in his royal hands, and pulled with force. It would not shift from the body of his royal younger brother. He sank down, embraced his beloved brother, suffered immeasurable grief, lifted the younger one's head into his lap with both hands, and wept until tears streamed over his face. The discus-bearing lord lamented in sorrow.

"Ah, alas, my Lak, dear companion in hardship. Why did you not guard your body, letting the unrighteous asura's spear strike you? You lie there, pitiful to see. Did you come to defeat yakshas only to die? When the kumbhanda's Mokkasak spear struck, your life nearly ended in the middle of the army. Then the Nagabas, the Brahmastra, and Intharachit's weapons struck you three times; Mulpalam's battle-spear nearly took your life as well. Four times now I have grieved until my own life almost ended. Only because Phiphek, Chomphuphan, and mighty Hanuman helped find medicines did my younger brother return to life. This time I myself came out; is it fitting, my jewel, that you should perish? The three worlds will join in blame, come here, and look down on me." As he lamented, weeping, he fainted and lost consciousness.

Then Sukhrip, Phiphek the yaksha, and all the eighteen crowned commanders saw mighty Phra Chakri faint while embracing Phra Lak. They were shaken as if their own lives had ended. Each brushed tears from his face and lamented in grief: "Ah, lord, crest-jewel above our heads, whose power spreads through all the heavens. We have relied on your feet and lived always in happiness, as beneath a jeweled umbrella over our crowns. Is it fitting that both radiant princes should lie on the sand in such distress? It looks as though no power remains for fighting the yaksha host." All the monkey kings and lords were grief-stricken, tears pouring down their faces as they cried aloud. The sound of mourning was like the wind at the end of an age blowing through a great rang forest, bending and breaking its branches and leaves. The powerful army was insensible with grief.

Then ten-faced Thotsakan reached the city of Lanka and entered his splendid chamber.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the radiant white umbrella, surrounded by beautiful women like stars surrounding the moon in clouds. His weariness left him entirely, and the asura lord was full of joy. He gave royal command: "Look, Montho, beloved younger one. Today I went out to fight the enemies, intending to kill Phiphek the yaksha so that the wicked one would die. I meant to cut trunk and root, just as you thought. But it did not come out as my heart intended. I hurled the Kabilphat. He hid beside the chariot and did not die. It slipped and struck mighty Phra Lak, who fell from the royal chariot, lying still with life gone. Then I returned to the city."

Then lovely Queen Montho heard the royal words of her husband and answered with joined hands: "Since the hostile enemy is destroyed, I am at ease and greatly freed from suffering. Lord, crest-jewel over the three worlds, do not trust humans and monkeys. They may come back from death; we have seen that many times before. Since Phiphek still remains firm, my lord should consider carefully."

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard his chief queen. The asura laughed again and again, stroked her back, and spoke graciously: "Listen, lovely beloved. Do not be anxious or doubtful that he will regain life. As for this Kabilphat of mine, even if there is medicine, it cannot be cured, because the grinding stone is far away beneath the earth in the netherworld. The powerful naga king guards it in his palace chamber. As for the jeweled child-stone, I went and asked for it, brought it up, and made it into my pillow; no one could know where it is. Even if Phiphek prepares every medicine, I think he will not obtain this stone. Even if Thao Kosiy came to restore life, he could not do it. Tomorrow I will raise the powerful army, seize that unrighteous Phiphek, cut off his arms and feet as a public shame, torture him until he dies, and then raise the kumbhanda army to fight Thao Mali." Speaking so, he leaned close, delighted and intimate, on the beautiful divine jeweled couch.

Now the tale will speak of the lord of Traitrungsa heaven. He sat upon his vast divine seat in the great splendid palace, and a strange wonder arose: his shining jeweled seat, stable in its glory, grew burning hot as if covered by the fire at the end of an age. He looked down with divine sight and saw the created younger lord struck by the ten-faced kumbhanda's spear, while Rama had fainted from love and grief. The whole army, all the monkey kings and troops great and small, had collapsed. The Three-Eyed Lord was startled and distressed, and he opened the channel of divine water, fragrant with sweet perfume and cool as countless rains. It fell upon the two kings and all the monkey army.

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai bearer of the bow, along with Phiphek, Sukhrip, the monkey lords, and all the powerful troops, touched the mist of divine water and regained consciousness. Only Phra Lak, struck by the victorious spear, lay still and did not revive. Phra Hari Rak was troubled and without happiness, grieving greatly for his younger brother. He gave royal command, asking Phiphek, lord among demons: "Phra Lak has been struck by Thotsakan's spear and does not revive to life. You, who are wise and skilled, what means can be devised to cure this?"

Then Phiphek, skillful in understanding, heard the king's command, bowed, and answered the royal words: "The younger brother of the lord of strong arms has not died by the yaksha's hand. The medicine that can cure this spear has long existed: Sankarani and Lada-jat, mighty in their virtue, together with the Tu-tua Trichawa tree, on the Sanjip Sanji mountain in the northern Uttarakuru continent. Also needed is dung from Phra Suli's bull, which is in the cave of Indrakan mountain. Only one who yawns as stars, moon, and sun can reach those places. The grinding stone is in the netherworld, guarded by King Kala Naga. But the stone's child-stone, Thotsakan obtained and brought away, making it into a shining jeweled pillow beneath the asura's head. Let Hanuman gather the medicines and grind them to cure the yaksha weapon. Then the younger brother of Phra Hari Rak Chakri will regain life."

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak, protector-lord, heard Phiphek the asura. The king felt some relief. He gave royal command to mighty Hanuman, his great soldier: "You, powerful lord, hurry in the night. Gather the divine medicines, then bring the shining jeweled grinding stone according to Phiphek the asura's words. Great monkey, return quickly."

Then Hanuman, strong and brave son of the Wind, bowed his head to receive the royal command, raised joined hands, and crawled away.

Standing on the earth, the monkey bowed with joined hands, closed his eyes, recited mighty spells, and gathered his mind to conjure his form.

At once he became Brahma, towering high above the mountain, with eight arms and four shining faces, adorned with brilliant jeweled earrings. He drew out the diamond trident and swung it, flashing like sunlight. Displaying mighty power like the fire at the end of an age, he flew through the clouds.

When he reached Sanjip Sanji, he came straight down onto the mountain peak. A thunderous noise shook everything in tumult by his tremendous power.

Then the hosts of gods great and small, whom the Lord of the Three Worlds had appointed to guard those medicines, heard the mountain roar and tremble. They were frightened and ran about in confusion, their bodies shaking and their minds unsteady.

Each god looked upward to the summit of the splendid Sanjip mountain and saw the mighty monkey, four-faced like Brahma himself, his earrings and diamond hair blazing with light like the clear sun. They knew that Narai incarnate had sent his soldier to gather medicine. No one else could be bold and able enough to reach the mountain; this matched the command of the Lord of the Worlds. Having thought so, the gods asked: "You who shine with power, what is your name? What purpose brings you here at this time of night?"

Then the radiant, mighty son of the Wind heard and answered: "My name is Hanuman. I am the powerful son of Phra Phai and the chief soldier serving Phra Narai incarnate, lord of the glorious city of Ayutthaya. He has led his armies to subdue the yakshas. Now his younger brother Phra Lak has been struck by the asura's Kabilphat in the great victorious battle. He sent me to gather the medicines and grind them into a remedy. You mighty ones, help tell me where they are now."

Then the radiant host of gods heard the name of Phra Chakri and gladly pointed out the medicines: "There is the Sankarani medicine on the mountain peak. Over there is the Tu-tua Trichawa tree. Powerful lord, gather them and take them."

Then mighty Hanuman, the great soldier, heard clearly and without doubt. He went around the mountain and gathered the medicines.

After he had them, he spoke again, asking the radiant guardian gods: "Where does Phra Suli's royal bull Usuphacharat dwell, divine ones?"

Then the host of divine gods heard battle-skilled Hanuman and pointed clearly to the mountain: "There is Indrakan mountain, towering high into the sky. It has a golden cave where Phra Suli's mount dwells."

Then victorious Hanuman heard this, rejoiced, and hurried away through the air.

When he reached the cave mouth at the southern foot of the mountain, it was utterly dark and nothing could be seen, like mist over the slopes of the Cakkrawan mountains. He opened his mouth and yawned out stars and moon, floating like the clear sun. Everything became bright as the earth's surface, and he entered the splendid celestial cave.

He saw the royal bull Usuphacharat, the mount of radiant Phra Isuan. He approached and spoke: "Now Phra Chakri is at war with Thao Thotsakan, and Phra Lak has been struck by the yaksha's spear. I ask to take your dung to compound medicine and cure the victorious younger lord."

Then the brave royal bull Usuphacharat heard the name of the incarnation and remembered Phra Suli's command: "Whoever yawns out stars, moon, and sun is Hanuman, the radiant monkey soldier of powerful Phra Narai, sent by the king to gather medicine." So he said, "Listen, monkey. You mighty, battle-skilled one, take it according to the prescription, to cure the lovely younger lord."

Then the strong and powerful son of the Wind gathered that fresh dark dung completely, then hurried away.

When he came out of the cave, at Indrakan mountain, he displayed battle power and sank through the earth.

He reached the netherworld realm, vast and splendid, bright with shining jewel-light, and entered the jeweled royal hall.

He told the naga king: "The lord of the three worlds is fighting the lord of Lanka, and the younger prince has been struck by the asura spear. He commanded me to come to you because I need the shining jeweled grinding stone tonight, to grind all the medicines and cure the poison of the asura's victorious spear."

Then the naga king, clear in understanding, heard and had no doubt. Gladly he gave the mother stone, then said: "As for the stone's child-stone, Thotsakan the yaksha asked for it and brought it up to his city. The asura made it into a pillow for sleeping."

Then mighty, battle-skilled Hanuman, when he had obtained the splendid stone, went up by passing through the earth.

He displayed his brave strength, kicked upward into the sky, passed through mist and parted clouds, and flew to the city of Lanka.

He floated in midair straight above the palace of ten-faced Thotsakan. Then he declared an oath of truth: "By the merit of the Four-Armed Lord, who has incarnated to subdue the age and make the world happy and whole, I will leave the stone in the sky. Let it hover there and not fall." Having spoken the oath, he threw it upward into the middle of the sky. It floated there as if possessed of life by the truth-power of the monkey lord. Then, displaying power, he made the ten directions dark and descended onto the ruby palace roof with the monkey's swift strength.

He heard the sound of palace women singing and lamenting in clear voices, laughing softly and murmuring throughout the asura's palace. The monkey lord raised joined hands and bowed to Phra Isuan, lord above, gathered his mind, recited spells and knowledge, and cast sleep upon the asura.

By the force of his powerful spell, the yaksha residence and the whole city became cool and still through the power of the battle-skilled monkey lord.
