Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Hanuman's theft of the child grinding stone from Thotsakan's palace, Phiphek's cure of Phra Lak, Saran's report to Lanka, Thotsakan and Montho waking with their hair tied together, Phra Khobut's failed attempts to break Hanuman's curse, Montho being forced to free the knot by striking Thotsakan's head, Thotsakan sending Mahothon to summon his elder brother Thapnasura from Cakkrawan, Thapnasura's arrival in Lanka, the feast in his honor, and the preparations on both sides for the next battle.

Hanuman Steals the Stone and Phra Lak Revives

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar line, together with lovely Montho and the inner ladies and attendants, were struck by Hanuman's spell. Their faces darkened and their sight blurred until they could not endure it; dazed, they collapsed on one another and fell asleep, without consciousness or sense.

Then victorious Hanuman, when he had completed the spell against the asura, removed the crest of his Brahma-faced form and hurled it down with the strength of his arm. It struck the earth and broke apart. He saw the ten-headed yaksha lord with his chief queen. The son of the Wind ground his teeth and said, "Look here, Thotsakan the yaksha. I am mighty Death itself, come suddenly to take the asura's life." Saying this, he slipped down into the palace, bright with shining radiance, crossed past the attendants and eunuchs, and entered the inner sleeping chamber.

He snatched up the diamond trident, ready to destroy him, but then the monkey thought again: "This would exceed the king's command. Even if I kill him, that would not be good. Better to shame him before all the gods in every sign; then all the spells and lore he possesses will become unlucky in every way." Having thought this, he took the hair of Montho, heavenly lovely woman, and tied it firmly to Thotsakan's head. Then he laid a curse over it: "No one with spells shall be able to undo this hair I have tied. Even if the mighty weapons of Thao Hatsanai are brought down, however much they cut and slash, let it not break, by the power of my curse." Then he wrote a message on the asura's forehead: "If you wish to free the hair, bow down to Queen Montho and have her slap your head three times. Then this hair will come loose." When the curse was finished, he pushed the yaksha's head aside and took the child-stone. Then he flew up through the opening of the victory palace with immense power, seized the stone hovering in the air, sprang through the sky, passed through mist and parted clouds, and came straight to wait upon the Four-Armed Lord.

When he arrived, he offered the medicines and radiant grinding stones to mighty Phra Narai, and the monkey reported everything.

Then Phra Chakri, whose power was greater than the sun's brightness, heard mighty Hanuman's words. The king was pleased and delighted. He gave command and praised the radiant monkey's power: "Wherever I send you, you succeed at once. You are fit to be the soldier who subdues yakshas. Not only that, you have shamed the ugly ten-headed demon lord. This merit is very great; where could its equal be found?" Saying this, he gave command to skillful Phiphek: "Hurry and grind the medicines together, and cure my younger brother at once."

Then the younger brother of the ten-faced yaksha received Phra Chakri's command. The asura prepared all the medicines, each in equal measure, according to the yaksha prescription. He laid them on the stone's face and recited while grinding them.

When it was done, he dissolved the medicine in clear, cool water, free from stain, rubbed it on the place held by the victorious spear, recited spells, and blew over it three times.

The Kabilphat slipped out from the body of the radiant younger brother of Phra Hari's line. By the power of Phra Suli's medicine, he regained consciousness.

Then Phra Lak, the younger prince, when the poison-power of the asura spear had ended, bowed at the royal feet and said: "Your Majesty has graciously saved my life. That kindness has no limit. I ask leave to serve in battle and take the field; I do not fear the asura's power."

Then radiant Phra Kritsanu Rak, seeing Phra Lak regain life, rejoiced as if he had gained the far shore of heaven. The two kings set out in splendid procession, beautiful as figures drawn by the gods. Each mounted his splendid chariot, and the lord gave royal command for the great brave armies to withdraw. With shouts shaking sky and earth, they returned to the golden pavilion.

Then Saran the yaksha spy, who had hidden at the foot of the mountain slope, saw that the younger prince had not died. The monkey armies withdrew, shouting until everything shook. He climbed onto Manomai's back and hurried away to the city of Lanka.

When he arrived, he went in and reported the matter to the four demon ministers: "Now the enemy king has come back to life. The powerful armies have withdrawn, shouting until every direction shakes, and have returned to the golden pavilion. I came in to report the matter."

Then the brave great ministers learned the event and ran in alarm to the inner palace gate.

They entered the gate and called many times, but no one answered at all. So they shouted inward: "Why is everything so silent like this?"

Then the yaksha women who kept order, together with elders, attendants, and eunuchs, heard the noisy tumult. Some went in and pulled at their superiors, waking in confusion and clawing at the walls. They ran, bumping into one another, their clothing loose and falling away. The beautiful court women shrieked in terror and confusion, falling, rising, crawling, and turning in panic until the whole lunar palace was noisy and disturbed.

Then the ten-headed solar-line lord, bound in Hanuman's strong spell that held his mind in sleep, heard the shrill terrified sound, a loud crashing tumult. As the mighty spell just began to fade, he started in alarm and woke at once. He raised his head from the couch, but his hair was tied to the queen's head. He tugged with the strength of his body, and the asura fell into noisy confusion.

Then lovely Montho was startled awake. She turned left and right in disorder, both hands grabbing and pulling wildly. The two of them struggled, pulled, and tumbled together on the golden sleeping couch.

Then the ten-headed lord of the solar yaksha line and lovely Montho each said, "What has happened?" They argued in confusion; husband pulled and wife pulled back, but it would not move. Their minds were astonished and bewildered. Looking up, he saw the ceiling bright as the sky, with the moon clear and shining. His suspicion multiplied beyond measure. The asura stared and looked carefully. He could not see the child grinding stone. His heart sank in grief, and he knew a powerful enemy had cast sleep upon him and stolen it. The demon king burned like fire. He tried to free the hair, but it would not come loose. However much he seized the royal sword and cut at it, it would not break apart. With thought exhausted and resentment in his heart, the yaksha king grew violently angry. His ten mouths gnashed their teeth, and the kumbhanda pulled and strained back and forth.

Then young lovely Montho, dizzy and in pain from her head, held her hair and said: "However much you cut and try to free it, it will not come loose. How long will you keep dragging and pulling? That enemy tied it with expert power."

Then brave-hearted Thao Raphanasura heard the young woman and gave command: "Ho, listen, maidservants. Go outside and tell them to invite the siddha sage here in the night."

Then the yaksha maidservant received the earth-bearing lord's command and went out to the royal gate.

She ordered the pages on watch, who had been assigned to sit guard before the palace front: "Go quickly and invite the wise Phra Khobut, the teacher, to come in."

Then the pages on watch at the front learned the royal command and hurried away into the night.

When they arrived, they knocked on the door. The demon officers called and woke the rishi: "The earth-bearing king has commanded that you be invited to him."

Then Phra Khobut, the great teacher, who had been sleeping in his forest hut, heard the asuras calling that Thotsakan had summoned him. He rose in alarm without washing his face, snatched up a grass-cloth robe and wrapped it around his body, then fumbled around looking for his staff. He tripped over the water jar and knocked over the spittoon. His palm-leaf fan fell, his rosary vanished, he ran in circles, struck and broke the wall of the hut, and clawed at the wrong place for the door. The asuras called to him many times before the rishi could finally get out. Then they crossed through thickets and forest shortcuts and hurried to the royal city.

When he arrived, he went up into the palace, bright with shining radiance. He saw the ten-faced lord and his chief queen pulling each other's hair back and forth. The ascetic stood stunned for a while, then asked the yaksha king: "Layman, you and the lady, how did you come to be like this?"

Then the ten-faced yaksha lord heard the great yogin and explained the matter: "Yesterday I led brave troops and demon armies great and small out to fight for victory, intending to kill that asura Phiphek. I hurled the Kabilphat, but it slipped and struck Phra Lak on the chariot. He fell down to the earth, and I thought his life had ended. When the sun set, I withdrew the fourfold army. Now those enemies cast sleep on me, snapped off the crest of the Brahma-faced sky-spire, stole the child-stone, and tied my hair together so it cannot be loosened at all, holy siddha. Lord of austerity and knowledge, please help free the hair. Do not let me suffer and be ashamed before all the people."

Then Phra Khobut, the great rishi, heard and said: "The enemy is fierce, brave, and battle-skilled. His knowledge and spells are powerful, so he tied the hair firmly together. As for stealing the child-stone, he did it because he knew the asura's hidden inward matter." Speaking so, the holy adept chose the peak of his incantations, muttered prayers back and forth, and blew over it at once.

The hair that had been tied there would not slip apart. He pulled and combed with both hands until the sage's mind and strength were worn down. Then he took a bronze bowl, worked beautifully with mixed gold, filled it with fragrant water, gathered his senses, and consecrated it.

Every kind of spell and charm was used, leaving out none from ko kai, ka, kop, and kon. He chanted royal mantras, Thai-language ascetic formulae, and even brought in the heart of Namo. When the holy ascetic had exhausted all his knowledge, he poured the water over the yaksha's head and over the hair of Montho the lady, but they did not move apart. However much he sprinkled and consecrated, it would not come loose. Phra Khobut recited until his mouth trembled, then drew a knife from his shoulder-bag and busily sawed, cut, and hacked.

When his hands were weary and he panted in hardship, not a single hair had broken. Sweat poured down and he stood gasping. "Why is this so strange?" Then he saw the letters written as if someone had tattooed them in ink on Thotsakan's forehead. The holy adept read them at once: "Let Montho, his wife, slap Thotsakan the yaksha on the head three times, as written in my rule, and it will come loose as desired." The sage said: "Layman, I have reached my limit, yaksha. This is because of his curse. If I tell you, I am embarrassed; if I leave it undone, the shame will grow and it will stay tied until death, unable to be freed. The letters say that the wife must slap the head three times. It must be done, unwilling though it is; this is the yaksha's karmic result. What is the use of feeling disgraced and ugly? I have no spell left and no wisdom remaining."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard the great siddha, and the asura burned as if in the fire at the end of an age. "Alas, this time, if anyone knows of me, they will laugh in delight. I am shamed before the gods; every kind of misfortune has come." Forced by necessity, he said: "Jewel of my eyes, beloved above all, do according to the curse he set. I will not hold blame against you, queen."

Then lovely Queen Montho heard her husband's command. It was as if someone had thrust a trident into her, split open her breast, and pulled out her heart so that life itself would end. She was also ashamed before the righteous sage. She bowed and answered the words: "For a woman to touch her husband's head, it would be better even to kill herself." Speaking so, she grieved as if her life would end.

Then the twenty-armed lord heard the woman's lament, but the lovely one would not follow his words. The demon king strained and jerked his body, dragging Montho's head with his own: "Is it good, then, to remain tied together like this?"

Then young lovely Montho grew even more grieved and stricken, tears flowing over her face. Unable to resist the command, the young woman raised joined hands above her head, bowed, and asked pardon of her husband: "Lord, have mercy. Do not let this be a karmic fault for your servant, an offense against the radiant feet." Having said this, she slapped her husband's head three times, and the hair came apart.

Then Thao Raphanasura was ashamed before the righteous sage. The kumbhanda sat still, stunned and rigid. He only strained and choked inward; he could not open his mouth to speak. His heart hurt as if his life would end, and the asura sighed again and again.

Then the great rishi Phra Khobut saw that Thotsakan would not speak and was only sunk in grief. He said: "Look, yaksha king. Why suffer so greatly? It is not fitting. You yourself are mighty and can subdue all the three worlds. Calm and quench this sorrow. It would be better to think how to pay him back, so the asura's honor and glory are known. Listen to what I say, beloved nephew." Speaking so, he gave a blessing: "May you be lasting and subdue all the three worlds. Let humans and wicked monkeys be defeated by the asura's sacred power. Stay here now and be at ease. I will take leave of you two radiant ones." Having said this, the sage flew back to his hermitage.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha, after the siddha Phra Khobut had spoken and gone back, pondered in thought. His mind was stopped; he sighed deeply, troubled and burning as if lying in the fire of time. "Alas for me. My knowledge and brave magic have been wasted. My power subdues the whole universe, yet I have suffered this disgrace. It is because that wicked Phiphek told the two radiant humans my strategy. Every undertaking and rite was made known to the enemies. Because of that, they could enter and despise me, without even fearing Brahma. I would not regret death itself as much as I burn at being outwitted by enemies. I am ashamed before the hosts of gods, gandharvas, guardians, and adepts. Who is there with sacred power, a kinsman or friend joined to my life, who can help avenge me and kill the humans and monkeys?" He suffered bitter grief until the sun lit sky and earth.

Then he thought of his elder brother, who shared the yaksha father's line, named Thapnasura, asura lord and ruler of the city of Cakkrawan. That king possessed immense strength, bright power, and courage. Thotsakan would send someone to invite him, bowing at his feet, so he could come destroy the humans and monkeys. Thinking this, he rose from the bright shining throne, bathed, put on splendid ornaments, and walked out into the victory audience hall.

Surrounded by ministers and brave troops great and small, all bowing before him in crowds, the king gave command: "Ho, listen, mighty Mahothon, battle-skilled and strong. Hurry to the city of Cakkrawan and report the matter clearly to my elder brother. Say that war has arisen in Lanka: fierce enemies have attacked in force. Invite him to set his feet here and help destroy the enemy."

Then Mahothon the demon minister received the earth-bearing lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He turned his face toward the western direction, displayed brave power, kicked upward through the clouds, and went straight to the city of Cakkrawan.

When he arrived, he descended from the sky and walked into the royal residence. He went up into the vast royal hall and waited upon the mighty demon king.

He bowed his head and spoke in homage to Thao Thapnasura the yaksha: "Your younger brother, the lord who rules the city of Lanka, commanded me to wait upon your feet, righteous sovereign lord. Now two humans named Rama and Lak have led monkey armies across the great ocean and attacked. They have slaughtered the solar-line yaksha race, and the whole city is in distress. Please come and shelter the yaksha lineage, cool the city's suffering, and bring relief by Your Majesty's victorious power."

Then brave-hearted Thao Thapnasura heard and grew angry like the fire of time. The demon king stamped his foot. "Ha! Humans and monkeys boasting of battle power come to despise my mighty younger brother. Are they Brahma's line or what? Good. We shall see each other. I will destroy their lives. Ho, powerful Wanu Racha, hurry and prepare the army. I am going to the city of Lanka to help my radiant younger brother and kill the enemy kings until their lives are shattered."

Then the brave minister Wanu Racha bowed his head to receive the royal command, and the demon lord hurried out.

He mustered the army, choosing only mighty and battle-skilled troops. Horse officers with snarling faces and glaring eyes held lifted lances braced for fighting. Elephant officers with tusked masks held hooked spears firmly. Chariot officers with grimacing faces and bared teeth held bows with poisoned arrows. Infantry officers inspected the battle troops, crowded and packed in great confusion. All were full of sacred power, and the ten directions feared their force. Common soldiers swung their weapons, fierce and strong. The four divisions looked as if they could overturn the earth. Everything was ready according to the asura's command.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha, when the army had been arranged, came to bathe in the waters.

He washed and bathed happily. Jeweled sprayers scattered water like rain. He applied fragrant waters mixed with golden flower perfume, slipped into splendid trousers with shining gold-trimmed curves, and put on a purple patterned cloth, its hip-cloth and side-flaps bound with scrollwork. He put on a fitted upper garment over his smaller arms and a chest ornament set with diamonds, gems, and rubies. Necklaces, directional plates, jeweled chains, armlets, gold bracelets, a great war ring, a radiant crystal crown, dangling earrings, ear ornaments, and flower ornaments adorned him. In his hand he held the art of the bow; the asura lord swung it in a display of courage, left the shining jeweled platform, sprang forward, and mounted the victory chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheel-rims were set with emeralds; its yoke and curved axle were soft and elegant; tiered panels and picture panels rose around the floating throne. The pavilion flashed with jeweled fittings, nine-gem pillars, hanging scrollwork, five glittering peaks, and graceful roof ornaments. Two thousand bold lions were yoked to it, proud as royal lions. Skilled Lothan, a fine-bodied driver, swung his club and drove like a gusting wind. Royal umbrellas, banners, and streamers adorned it, fluttering at their tips. Fans, parasols, and jeweled fly-whisks stood thick around it, with foreign trumpets and curved trumpets. War drums, pipes, and gongs thundered, shaking the belly of the universe and the mountains, while the chariot glided through the sky and crossed the great ocean.

When he reached the royal city of Lanka, the demon king descended from the sky with his fourfold army onto the shining forecourt.

Then the ten-faced yaksha lord came out among the ministers in the bright royal hall. Learning that his powerful elder brother had reached the splendid residence, he descended from the jeweled and golden palace and went joyfully to meet him.

When he reached him, he bowed to the elder lord, and the two kings went up together into the great shining palace.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha sat upon the jeweled couch, embraced his beloved younger brother, and spoke graciously: "Listen, mighty one. These humans named Rama and Lak have come attacking all the way to the victory city. From what royal stock are they? What city do they rule? What kind of power do they possess, that they could do so much?"

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard his elder brother's command and answered: "These two human brothers are the sons of King Thotsarot, ruling over the glorious city of Ayutthaya. Their power lies in their victorious arrows. Even so, that is no great matter; a way can be found to break them. My bitterness is against vile Phiphek, who became the enemy's hidden informant. He has told everything from beginning to end. Radiant elder brother, powerful lord, may Your Majesty show mercy."

Then Thao Thapnasura heard his younger brother's words. The asura grew angry as fire. "Look at vile, ugly, deluded Phiphek. He sees outsiders as better than his own lineage; how could his heart do such a thing?" Then he spoke graciously: "Listen, ten-faced yaksha. Why be anxious and hot-hearted about going to kill the enemies? As for the two humans who have come, even if they are brave with sacred arrows, leave that work to me. I will help think it through and destroy their lives. As for the monkey host, I will cut them down until none remain. And that vile Phiphek, I will seize him and give him to my younger brother."

Then Thotsakan the yaksha heard his brother's command and was delighted as if he had gained the far shore of Dusit heaven. His ten mouths laughed in joy, and he clapped his hands until the sound roared. "This gracious command is like saving your younger brother's life." Having said this, he gave command to the great ministers: "Tell the kitchens inside and outside to prepare delicious foods, savory dishes, sweets, and strong victorious wine, and bring them as offering to my elder brother. Feed the asura army as well."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha received the earth-bearing lord's command, raised joined hands, and went out. He ordered the palace staff to notify all the kitchens, inside and outside, great and small, to prepare food and wine according to the royal command.

Then the yaksha palace-watch officers learned the minister's words and immediately sent the notice.

Then the beautiful women of the kitchens received the order, distributed ingredients in tumult, and began preparing according to their duties. The inner kitchens prepared the royal dishes, setting them in busy order, together with strong victorious wine, savory dishes, and sweets complete.

Then the young heavenly women in charge of service, all lovely in form, the twelve attendants of the asuras, dressed themselves, combed their hair, applied fragrance until the scent filled the air, powdered their faces bright as the moon, and polished every body. They dressed in rivalry, displaying their beauty, charming and graceful, lovely in all their limbs. Their manners were sharp, lovely, and bright. They arranged things in commotion according to the duties of each staff, lifted the offerings in order, and carried them up to present to the asura lord.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha invited his elder brother to eat the food and drink the wine.

Then the young attendants, tender and lovely, all fresh in body and beautiful in form, came in to kneel and serve the asura lord. Some poured wine for the yaksha king; others sat fanning gently, and the women waved fans over the kumbhandas.

The women singers sang in lamenting celestial song. Hand drums and barrel drums answered one another, taking up the plaintive melody until it caught the heart. Then they shifted the melody into sweet words, slow, clear, and bright in voice, with finger cymbals, clappers, and instrumental song all joining.

The dancing women swayed and danced, offering their hands before the yaksha king. They showed a gesture like horses playing polo, with teasing, flirtatious motions together. Then they circled and changed the dance, casting sidelong glances with twisting charm, pretending to come near the kumbhandas, then turning and stepping away. Then they shifted into kinnaras skirting a cave, dancing and weaving their hands, making the movement alluring to serve the asura lord.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha ate while watching the beautiful dancing women. The demon king was delighted and happy in the flavor of love, and he listened to sounds pleasing to the ear, all of it heart-gladdening.

Then the women of the outer kitchens, great and small, finished preparing food and wine, and porters carried everything in noisy bustle.

They set the strong victorious wine in rows on the front platform, with roasted elephant, gaur made into sauce, sliced meat salad, and fried tiger cakes.

Then the armies who had come from Cakkrawan sat in a ring together as if for display. Some ate snacks and drank until drunk; officers and common troops yawned, belched, and shouted. They danced and sang, senseless, while actors played cha-tri drama in confusion. Some teased the young kitchen women with noisy shouting, pulling and pushing; some blocked the way, enjoying themselves in every troop.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha, when the meal was finished, came to the station of his army.

He gave royal command, ordering the yaksha demon ministers: "Prepare the asura troops. I am going to attack the dangerous enemies."

Then great minister Wanu Racha bowed his head to receive the king's command, paid homage, and hurried out.

He inspected and prepared the demon battle troops, complete in array on left and right. Foot soldiers fastened weapons to their bodies, every one ready. Horse troops harnessed their restless horses; chariot troops yoked the chariots in busy order; elephant troops harnessed their fighting elephants; all four divisions were ready. They stood crowded in ranks: vanguard, royal army, reserve, quick force, support force, scouts, and watchers complete. They were ready inside and outside, in layered lines of three spear-lengths and seven spear-lengths, all holding weapons firmly while waiting for the asura lord.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha, when the army arrangement was complete, went to bathe in the water.

The bathing water splashed cool and clear. He anointed himself with sweet fragrance, put on splendid trousers and a cloth patterned with Garuda-scroll stems. His hip-cloth and side-flaps bore diamond vines; over his body he wore scaled armor set with yellow gems. Directional plates were engraved in gold; pearl chains crossed his chest. Gold armlets twisted like dragons, and shining diamond rings flashed like rainbows. A cut-jeweled crown, flower ornaments, dangling earrings, and ear ornaments adorned him. He girded on the great diamond mace, and in his royal hand he held bow and arrows. Like mighty Wetsuwan in battle power, he walked up onto his royal chariot.

O war chariot: the curved yoke was beautiful crystal; the lower frame was inlaid with gold, with golden vine wheels and hubs. Tiered throne panels rose between pictures; the pavilion was fitted with jeweled lotus-turning panels. Gods with joined hands, kinnaras, and transformed dragons adorned it; golden pediments and screens stood upright. Its five peaks looked like a heavenly palace. Two thousand bold lions were yoked and sprang proudly. Skilled Lothan held a club and drove with fierce pride. Royal umbrellas, banners, and victory flags for war adorned it. Pipes and drums sounded with a thunderous roar; asuras shouted in a mighty tumult. The vanguard moved, packed thick along the road; dust hid the sun as the troops hurried the royal chariot onward.

When they reached the battlefield, he had the great army stop and set itself along the edge of the forest, firm and waiting for the monkey army.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, lay upon his splendid couch while the king thought of taking victory. The last watch of the night passed. Birds called in bright voices, urging the sunrise; gibbon women cried and called to one another. Crickets and cicadas chirped; jeweled roosters flapped their wings and crowed. Golden light shone through the sky, and the righteous king rose from sleep.

He bathed and dressed himself in shining ornaments, splendid as a divine picture, then went in procession out before the radiant pavilion.

All the soldiers of both cities bowed with joined hands at the radiant feet. When the sound of troops was heard, shouting and shaking everything, the king gave command, asking the chief astrologer: "Whose army is this today, leading powerful troops out?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord heard the royal command and took the time by the great minute. Counting from the sun to the moon, dividing without error, he finished, raised his joined hands, bowed, and answered: "The war that has come out is led by the great asura Thapnasura, victorious in battle, who rules mighty Cakkrawan. He is the elder brother, sharing the father of the brave twenty-armed lord. May the incarnate king come out to fight the kumbhanda."

Then the lord of the three worlds learned that Thotsakan's elder brother had led his army out. He ordered the son of the Sun: "You, mighty and battle-skilled one, prepare the monkey troops. We will go kill the asura."

Then lord Sukhrip, the radiant monkey, bowed his head to Phra Chakri, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He mustered the brave monkey hosts. Hanuman was chief of the vanguard, commanding the forest-monkey troops, all of them riding fiery rhinoceroses. Nil-ek the mighty guard led troops riding shaggy-faced chumpa beasts. The royal army of monkeys rode roaring tigers. Nilnon, the quartermaster commander, led troops riding lions and powerful gaurs. Nilkhan, commander of the deep rear guard, led troops riding deer and antelope. All held weapons and were terrible in power, able to overturn the earth. The five divisions were ready together, officers and common troops, like water in the ocean's stream.

The two kings washed and bathed. Fragrant streams carried the scent of flower essences. Their trousers were set with ruby-red jewels and naga-scroll hems. The elder brother wore cloth offered by the gods, patterned and trimmed with gold; the younger wore divine cloth with a red ground and Garuda-shaped hem. Their hip-cloths and side-flaps bore swan-scrolls; their upper garments were woven with crossing vines. Directional plates, chest ornaments, and chains set with melon-shaped diamonds shone. Gold armlets took dragon form; emerald rings flashed like rainbows. Each wore a flower-crowned diadem with dangling earrings and ear ornaments. The elder brother bore the Brahmastra; Phra Lak held the Phlaiwat bow and arrow. Beautiful as sun and moon, they went up onto the celestial chariots.

O royal chariots: their wheel-rims were set with pearls, their curved yokes all coral jewels, resembling palaces in the sixteen heavens. Floating thrones and pavilions stood upon them, with emerald scrollwork pillars and five peaks interlaced with supports and flying Garuda-vine patterns. Lotus-colored horses drew them; all four drivers were godly sons. Matali, Indra's charioteer, drove the horses leaping and springing. The younger brother sat in front with joined hands; peacock parasols, banners, and royal flags shaded the king. All royal regalia was splendid; pipes, drums, and gongs sounded together. The horses neighed in thunder, the troops roared until the earth shook, and dust darkened the way like smoke as the army hurried forward.
