Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thapnasura's battle against Rama, his transformation into a vast form that swallows the monkey army, Sukhrip cutting off his arms, Rama killing him with the Brahmastra, Indra sending Vishnukam to revive the monkeys, Saran's report to Lanka, Thotsakan asking Montho for a hidden rite from Kailasa, Montho revealing and beginning the Sanjip rite, Kirithon and Kiriwan coming from Duram to Lanka, Thotsakan appointing them as vanguard, and Rama's army forming for the next battle.

Thapnasura Falls and the Sanjip Rite Begins

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the monkey host advancing. The human who was their commander stood upon the chariot, his left hand holding the mighty bow, his face and marks beautiful. He looked like Thao Hatsanai, lord of the gods, moving down from heaven. His younger brother sat in front of that chariot, like the spotless moon cleared of clouds. "They are small, no larger than a hand, yet arrogant and unafraid of yakshas. In a moment they will know my hand; I will destroy their lives." Thinking this, he gave command to all his soldiers, great and small: "Drive all the mighty troops forward. Break the monkey army and seize the victory."

Then Chakrawut, skilled in battle, received the command of the mighty lord and drove the troops forward to attack.

Then the yaksha forces, full of asura power, displayed their might and rushed to harry the forest-monkeys.

They hurled and flung weapons in confusion. Each warrior stabbed with great spears; some shot crossbows and fire-guns. The shouting thundered until everything shook in tumult.

Then the monkey vanguard split apart to meet them like crow-wings, and rushed in to strike the kumbhandas on every side.

They kicked with their feet, bit with their mouths, and slapped with their hands, spinning as swiftly as a turning wheel. They snatched weapons and struck and cut with them, breaking through by their own power. Ten yakshas against one monkey were overthrown; the demon host died in ruin. They broke and scattered in every direction, and the monkeys chased them down and struck them.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha saw his troops breaking and dying, senseless in defeat. The asura grew angry like the fire of time. He drew his sacred bow and set an arrow on the string, fixed on slaughter. Pulling it back with victorious strength, the demon lord loosed it.

The sound shook and rolled through the air. It became countless weapon-arrows, struck the forest-monkey army, and killed them until they lay strewn everywhere.

Then the lord who rules the three worlds saw the asura's arrow come and strike the monkey army. Heads, feet, and bodies were cut apart; they died all over the mountain slopes. He drew the Brahmastra of mighty power, and the king loosed it at once.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of an age, shaking the mountains of the universe. It struck the asura army and ended their lives, scattering them over the ground. Then it hit the demon king's royal chariot, which broke apart, unable to endure its force. As for the forest-monkey soldiers who had died, they came back to life again.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha fell from his splendid royal chariot. The asura grew very angry and furious. "Ha! These humans are capable indeed; their arrows have sacred power. And those ugly monkeys, wherever they enter, they break everything with their hands. If this is how it goes, will the people of Lanka not all lose their lives? My own power is like the fire at the end of an age, yet battle with them has come to this. Enough. I will devise a stratagem. I will seize the two radiant humans and eat them, along with the whole army, leaving not one enemy alive." Having thought this, the demon lifted his hands to his face, bowed his head in worship, closed his eyes, recited mighty spells, gathered his mind, and transformed his body.

In a moment he was as large as Brahma, towering high into the sky. His body sank into the earth, his feet planted firm upon the broad ground. His lower mouth opened down to the earth; he thrust out his tongue until it hid the sun. The two hands of the great kumbhanda circled the monkey army and held it in. Darkness fell like night; the demon lord's body could not be seen. By his immense power he meant to eat the whole victorious army.

Then all the monkey troops were left in darkness and could not see even twilight. Every monkey was frightened. Some cried out calling to one another in confusion. Officers and common soldiers made a noisy tumult, ran and crashed into one another in disorder, and finally entered the asura's mouth.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha, when the monkeys entered his mouth, was delighted. The asura gulped and swallowed them down. Great and small alike, none were left; all became food for the yaksha lord. The monkey armies writhed and died inside the kumbhanda's belly.

Then Phra Chakri, jewel-lord of the discus, stood above the shining chariot and saw the strange darkness. He heard only the noise of feet and cries, roaring so loudly that no speech could be understood. Wondering and troubled in his heart, the king asked the astrologer: "Why has it grown dark like this, as if night had come with a hundred thousand storms? My mind is full of doubt. What is the yaksha doing?"

Then Phiphek, wise in understanding, heard the king's command, bowed, and answered the royal words: "The darkness that hides the sun has come because Thapnasura the yaksha has transformed his body, making himself as vast as the mountain of the universe. With both hands he has encircled the victorious army by his strength. He stretches his tongue across the sky and waits to eat the monkeys. May Your Majesty, Phra Chakrit, send a mighty soldier, skilled in battle, to hurry out and cut off the asura's arms."

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak, royal lord, heard Phiphek the astrologer, and gave command: "Look, son of the Sun, you who are powerful and brave. Go quickly and cut off the arms of that demon lord, severing them from his body."

Then the monkey king Sukhrip received the command of Phra Chakri, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He stood and bowed with his fingers joined before the lord Phra Swayambhu, then recited mighty spells and transformed his monkey body.

He became as huge as Brahma himself, showing radiant power. Four faces rose high to the sky, and eight arms held a mighty trident. He brandished it in a display of force. His roar thundered through every direction. Then, with swift bodily power, he leapt up among the clouds.

He saw the asura kumbhanda, his head huge as Mount Atsakan, his mouth opened like a cavern, his two arms encircling the troops like a fortress. The monkey lord descended from the sky, sprang forward with brave strength, and cut the demon lord's left and right arms with the divine trident's power. They broke and flew from his body, scattering in countless pieces. The sky brightened everywhere, and the monkeys mocked the asura.

Then Thao Thapnasura the yaksha, his arms cut from his body, gnashed his teeth in wrath. He leapt up from beneath the earth, roared and shouted until everything rang, and stamped the ground in thunder, showing fierce defiant power. He cried, "Hey, hey, monkey! You boast that your power is strong. Do not think your two masters, Lak and Rama, will escape death. Even if my arms have been cut away, I will kill you with my left and right feet, making masters and servants alike fall dead everywhere until none remain."

Then the great soldier Sukhrip heard him and shouted in scorn: "Ho, wicked, vile one. Do not stand there shamelessly boasting of your power against radiant Phra Chakrit. Even by my hand, I, who am only his soldier, your life would end in an instant. It is only because I fear exceeding the royal command that I do not kill you." Having said this, he hurried back by the power of his monkey might.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the solar-line king with the bow that he had fought and cut off the arms of the asura kumbhanda.

Then Phra Chakri, jewel-lord of the discus, heard the son of the Sun and was pleased, for it matched his thought. He praised the younger brother of Pali, then gave decisive command to mighty Matali, telling him to drive the chariot close to the asura.

When he drew near, he saw the asura with both left and right arms severed, his body immense, his brows twitching, his eyes glaring, his teeth clenched. He drew the Brahmastra and set it on the string, meaning to end the demon's life. The righteous king raised his hand, pulled firm, and loosed it with power.

Crack upon crack, like thunderbolts, the whole world shook in every quarter. It struck Thapnasura the asura, and by its power his life ended.

The arrow carved through the yaksha's liver, kidneys, and all his entrails, and the monkeys who had died came out from the kumbhanda's belly.

Then the eighteen crowned monkey warriors, together with the whole monkey army, pursued and attacked the demon troops.

Some stabbed, some cut, some bit. They seized and flung them by brave strength. The asuras fell scattered over the earth; the whole victorious army of demons breathed its last.

Then Phiphek, the great astrologer, bowed and said to the lord of the three worlds: "Before this, when the mighty monkey troops were struck by weapons and died, Phra Phai's wind would blow over them and revive them all. This time the yaksha swallowed them, and I think the monkeys will not return to life. May Your Majesty sound the victorious bow until it shakes Traitrungsa heaven. Thao Hatsanai will come down and revive the monkey army."

Then Phra Rama, solar-line lord with the bow, heard the brother of the twenty-armed king. The king grasped the bow and held it firm. He pulled it with sacred strength; earth and heaven shook and thundered all the way to the worlds of the gods and the six shining heavens.

Then Thao Hatsanai Kosiy sat upon his splendid divine throne in his palace, rejoicing in heavenly wealth among lovely celestial women and apsaras who danced and served him, delighting his heart without cease. He heard the sound of the bow, and heaven and earth trembled in alarm. Wondering in his heart, Hatsanai looked down with divine sight. He saw the solar-line lord who rides Garuda fighting for victory against the yakshas, his monkey army lost because the asura had swallowed them. They did not return to life by breath; all lay scattered over the earth. So he took the company of Indra's city and flew down to earth by his power.

When he arrived, he gave command to radiant Vishnukam: "Take divine water and sprinkle the monkeys who have died."

Then Vishnukam, wise in nature, received the heavenly command of Hatsanai, took the divine water, and brought it.

He went through the monkey army that the yaksha had eaten and whose lives had ended, making sure not to sprinkle the asura corpses before the face of Phra Chakri.

Then the radiant monkey armies, when the divine water touched them, regained life together.

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak, seeing all the monkeys regain their lives through the divine water of the lord of the gods, rejoiced greatly. His face shone like the moon, and he gave command: "The goodness of Thao Makkhawan cannot be measured or compared. Whenever war has come to hardship, he has helped resolve it every time."

Then Thao Hatsanai Kosiy heard Phra Hari Rak Chakri and gave a divine royal command: "May Your Majesty quickly subdue this harm and cool all ten directions. May the royal enemies be defeated by Your Majesty's power. Remain and prosper in safety; I will take my leave for now." Having said this, he led the gods back through the air to his palace.

Then Phra Chakri, wise and brave, when Makkhawan had returned to the city of heaven, ordered the armies to withdraw. The monkey forces on left and right shouted until the earth shook, and returned to the radiant pavilion.

Then Saran, the yaksha messenger, saw Thapnasura the asura fight until his life was ended. Pale with fear and shaking, the kumbhanda could not remain there. He leapt onto Manomai's back and drove swiftly into Lanka.

When he arrived inside the royal city, he descended from the bold horse, entered the jeweled royal hall, and waited upon the asura king.

He bowed his head and reported to Thao Raphanasura the yaksha: "Your elder brother went out to fight, and now his life has ended. Not one of the horses, chariots, elephants, or fourfold army remains." He told the story from beginning to end, exactly as he had seen it.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard Saran the asura messenger report that his elder brother had died. He was startled as if someone had struck him with a blade and cut off his head, ending his life. His heart burned like the poison of the fire of time. The demon king sat rigid and stunned. Tears welled in his eyes, and he could not open his mouth to command. He left the splendid royal hall and went into the shining palace.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat and sat near his chief queen. Sighing, he spoke: "Beloved, partner of my life, now my elder brother raised his army and went out to drive the battle, but the righteous king has killed him. War defeats us every time, while the enemy's strength grows fiercer. My heart is burdened beyond measure. Lady, what shall we think to do? When you lived on Kailasa, attending at the feet of beautiful Phra Uma, the great goddess was skilled and swift in wisdom. Her spells and mantras were effective; every hard rite could be performed. You were close to her and served her, and the lady showed you mercy. Did she grant you any special thing, any Vedic rule or spell? Beautiful woman, consider it and help me in this hour."

Then lovely Montho, chief queen, heard her husband's command. The goddess sat still and thought. She remembered a ritual act that Phra Uma had bestowed. No one in the three worlds knew it. The lady answered his words: "When I lived with Lady Uma at royal Kailasa, I kneaded and pressed her feet for a long time, and she showed me mercy. She gave me one deep, subtle mantra, a science of ascetic practice called the Sanjip rite. It brings forth special divine water, like the amrita of the radiant Three-Eyed Lord. Whoever has lost life, if sprinkled with this water, will live again. Whatever work they are used for, they can do it, mighty, brave, and powerful; they can fly through the sky, though they cannot speak as the mind desires. Even if a hundred thousand die each day, they will surely return to life and rise again to kill the enemy through the power of that water."

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha heard his chief queen and was filled with joy, as if he had gained Indra's whole city and subdued all three worlds. He slipped close, embraced the lovely woman, and received her as the delight of his heart. Then he spoke beautiful words: "Beloved, darling of my life, the spells you learned are more wonderful than all knowledge in the three worlds. Had this rite been established from the beginning, could the enemies have resisted us? The solar line would not have been destroyed in battle. My dear, quickly think and perform the rite to help me. I see this war being finished by your expert spells."

Then young lovely Montho, full of compassion, heard the royal command and answered: "All this began through karmic fruit that clouded my mind and kept me from remembering it. Your Majesty, mighty lord, do not be angry with your servant. I, your beloved wife, ask to repay the mercy that has lifted my head. But in the rule of this knowledge, sensual love is strongly forbidden. Your Majesty is wise; discipline yourself and hold your heart firmly. Do not long for the taste of love. Lead the yaksha army out to seek victory, and I will establish the rite and send the divine water out to you. By it Your Majesty will complete the destruction of the hostile forces, so do not be troubled."

Then Thao Thotsakan, brave in battle, heard his chief queen and rejoiced. He stroked her back and said: "You who share my life, why should I be anxious over worldly pleasure? Quickly establish the rite according to Vishnu-spell and mantra. As for me, I will take leave, raise the army, and go set myself to receive and hold back the enemy troops first." Having said this, the king stepped out to the victorious royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, with ministers great and small bowing in crowds before him, and gave command: "Ho, brave Mahothon, mighty and skilled in battle. Build a splendid ritual hall in front of the shining royal forecourt. Make it thirty-nine rooms, with golden ceilings and curtains shining bright, all offerings and flowers complete, together with a splendid altar."

Then Mahothon, brave-hearted minister, bowed his head to receive the demon king's command, raised joined hands, and crawled out.

He assigned and divided the workers by duty. They laid out the plan, dug holes in tumult, and carried timber in busy motion.

They set up a royal ritual hall, broad, long, high, and spacious, with thirty-nine bright rooms and verandas around all four sides. Roof and ceiling were spread in white; golden patterned curtains enclosed it. Fragrant tassels hung down. A jeweled altar shone with brilliant color. Outside, royal fences were set in rows, with banners and umbrellas standing as screens. Seven colors and seven kinds of flowers, golden incense and candles, and all service vessels were complete. Water jars stood on beds, arranged in rows. Jeweled and golden baisi offerings were set according to every rule.

Then lovely young Montho, when the auspicious victorious hour drew near, entered the bathing place.

She purified and bathed her body; water showered down like rain. She rubbed herself with fragrant substances mixed with flower pollen. She wore clean white garments, with a white shoulder-cloth crossing above her shoulder. Auspicious powder adorned her face, and she bound her hair in a wrapped ascetic crest. Then she put on the sacred thread, holding a jeweled rosary in her hand. She was beautiful like a female ascetic, lovely in manner. When all was done, she left the shining seat, attended by heavenly women, and walked to the ritual hall.

When she arrived, she climbed onto the jeweled throne beneath the white umbrella, lit golden incense and candles, and scattered flowers in worship. With fingers joined above her head, she honored the Vedic mantras and remembered the goodness of Lady Uma. The beautiful woman closed her eyes and gathered her mind, making it firm in concentration, without stirring her body. She held her mind and recited the spells according to the ascetic rite.

Now the story turns to Kirithon the yaksha and Kiriwan the asura, two brothers and sons of Thotsakan. Their mother was Lady Khotchasarn, who lived in the Himmaphan forest. The two were born from the same womb, and Atsakan the demon took them away. He raised them in the city of Duram for a long time until they grew great. Then they began thinking of their victorious father, from whose head they had been born. They wanted to go to the palace in Lanka and visit their radiant father. Having thought this, the two asuras went to the jeweled royal hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of Thao Atsakan the yaksha and said: "Your beloved sons ask leave to go to the royal city of Lanka and wait upon our father, from whom we were born long ago, so we may hear news of his sorrow and happiness. May Your Majesty show mercy."

Then Thao Atsakan the yaksha heard the words of the two asuras and gave royal command: "My heart-bound friend has not seen my face for a long time. Since you will go to Lanka, your father will be glad beyond measure." Having spoken, he ordered the demon minister Kalachak: "Prepare a mighty yaksha army for my beloved powerful sons."

Then the minister Kalachak the yaksha received the asura king's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He mustered the asura troops, all demon warriors of the Kakaphasa host. One division had striped bodies and faces like tigers with fangs bared. One division had tiger faces with curved fangs and strong red bodies. One division had bright yellow bodies and faces like boars. One division was black as ink, strange to see, with faces turned into buffaloes. Another troop had graceful green bodies and dragon faces with rolling eyes. All held every kind of weapon, showing fierce power. Officers and common soldiers made a great tumult, ready and waiting for the asura princes.

Then the two yaksha princes, when the army had been arranged, came to bathe in the waters.

The two kings bathed and cleansed themselves in perfumed streams smelling of flower pollen. They put on curved-hem trousers shaped with dragons coiling together. Their cloths were of different colors, woven with rival patterns; their hip-cloths and side-flaps bore golden-vine designs. Their upper garments shone with green body-color, and golden chest-bands were set with rubies. Directional plates, chest ornaments, and round gems gleamed; chains were bright with jewels. Gold armlets shaped like turning dragons and diamond rings flashed beautifully. Each wore crown and jeweled earrings. When all was finished, each took bow and arrows, left the splendid palace, and walked to mount his horse.

O the two royal horses: their power was like royal lions. One was black and one was white, both excellent, their pace equal to the Sun's horses. Born of the sky-horse breed, they could travel through the air as the mind wished. Their tack was beautiful as if created by divine art, with radiant jewel-stars and splendid ornaments. Royal umbrellas, peacock parasols, banners, and victory flags adorned them. Gongs and drums thundered over the earth. The demon troops shouted in tumult. They drove quickly as a gusting wind; dust hid the sky as they crossed the back of the ocean and went straight to the city of Lanka.

When they arrived, they stopped their soldiers outside the splendid city wall. The two princes descended from their horses and went up into the royal hall.

Together they bowed their heads at the feet of their royal father, amid the assembled asura kumbhandas crowded all around.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha, when he saw both his beloved sons, rejoiced greatly. The demon king came down from the throne-seat, embraced both royal sons, kissed them closely, looked upon their faces, and said: "Your father has thought of you without ceasing. Your coming makes me glad, as if I had gained heaven's wealth. Now war has come and presses us; battle has not ceased for even a moment. The fighting has driven on until the solar-line family and the hundreds of thousands of warriors have been destroyed over many years."

Then the two radiant brother-princes heard their royal father say that arrogant enemies had brought monkey armies across the great ocean to attack him. They grew angry like the fire at the end of time. The demon lords joined their fingers and answered: "How can this be, father? Alas, how could you remain still until the solar line and the whole victorious city have been destroyed? We are pained beyond measure. Your two sons were not here beneath your radiant feet and did not know that royal enemies had come to trample Your Majesty. How can humans and vile beasts be so daring? Your sons also possess power. We ask to serve by going out to seize victory. We will kill both Lak and Rama with all their forces, leaving none. Do not be anxious in your royal heart. Leave this work to your servants."

Then Thao Raphanasura the yaksha heard the words of his two sons, and they were like divine water mixed into his heart. His ten mouths laughed happily, and he clapped his hands until the sound shook everything. "Since you will go out and seek victory against the enemies, your father rejoices as if he had gained Dusit heaven. I think the desire to destroy the enemies' lives will be fulfilled. I too will go fight against the two radiant humans. Now Montho, your mother, is establishing a rite to bring forth divine water that will be sprinkled upon the demons who have died. All who are dead, long ago or newly dead, will regain life and rise again. My beloved sons, joined to my heart, lead out as the vanguard." Having said this, he gave command to Mahothon the minister: "Quickly muster the demon army. Choose only fierce, brave, battle-skilled troops. I myself will go out and fight the royal enemies."

Then Mahothon the demon minister received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and left the royal hall.

He mustered the bold fourfold army, four capable divisions, every warrior active and strong. Elephant lords rode trained war elephants, brave and dangerous in musth. Horse lords rode fine horses, skilled and strong in battle. Chariot lords yoked copper-covered chariots, arranging them according to the victorious order of war. Commanders inspected the troops in dense, noisy ranks, countless as the ocean. All held weapons and displayed fierce power in tumult. The two royal sons were set as the vanguard, and the army covered the earth like waves in the great sea.

Then Thao Thotsakan, brave in battle, together with his two powerful sons, went to bathe in the water.

The three kings bathed and cleansed themselves; cool clear water fell like rain. They wore fragrant waters mixed with heavenly gold and shining perfume. Each put on curved-hem trousers, brilliant with jeweled gold. Their cloths were in different colors, cut with patterns of curling vines, birds, and swans. Hip-cloths and side-flaps flashed; their upper garments were all jeweled scale armor. Chest ornaments were set with round rubies, black gems, chains, and directional plates. Gold bracelets and armlets were shaped like serpents; rings shone with red jewels. Each wore a radiant crown, flower ornaments, earrings, and ear ornaments. The royal father's twenty hands held every kind of weapon and bow. His sons took mighty bows, moved their hands, and came to the splendid mounting platform.

He had the two royal sons move the ten armies as the vanguard. They left victorious Lanka, and then the sky-ruling lord mounted the great war elephant.

O the war elephant: when called, it rumbled in fierce strength. It towered high as a Himmaphan mountain, born of Airavata's elephant line. It trampled with its feet, swung its trunk, and pierced with its tusks; its strength was swift as a gusting wind. It could stand against ten lions without yielding and endure weapons with stubborn might. It was harnessed with gold-filigree netting; golden star-panels and mirrors covered its face. The neck-cloth was rich and splendid, with tassels hanging beautifully for war. It was arrayed with high battle regalia. Gongs and drums thundered in a roar, and shouts shook up to the underworld as the war troops hurried onward.

When they arrived, he stopped the fourfold army and set it in a great battle formation on the victorious field, holding firm while they waited for Phra Rama's army.

Then the lord who upholds the worlds and subdues the three worlds considered the matter of war until the last watch of night. The stars and moon faded from the sky. The sun rose above the mountain peak, golden light shining across the heavens. Birds called through the forest; gibbons cried out, seeking one another. Crickets and cicadas sang on and on with voices sweet as music, and the king rested in ease and joy.

Then he entered the bathing place and washed, put on shining divine jewels, left the jeweled chamber, and came out before the victorious pavilion.

The soldiers of both cities were gathered there, with monkey kings and great and small lords bowing all around him like stars surrounding the bright moon in the sky. Hearing the roaring shouts, loud enough to shake the emerald mountains and like waves in the great ocean, the king asked the astrologer: "Who has raised an army to attack today? The shouting is very loud. Is it one of Lanka's solar line, or is it Thotsakan the asura?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord received Phra Chakri's command, raised joined hands, and took the omen. Observing both Atsakan and the Three-Eyed Lord according to the occult books, he saw everything clearly in his heart. He bowed and answered the royal command: "This army is Thotsakan himself, together with two kumbhanda sons. One asura is named Kirithon, and the other is named Kiriwan. Their mother is Lady Khotchasarn; they are brave and strong. The two were born from one womb, and Atsakan the demon took them away and raised them as adopted sons in the city of Duram until they were grown. Their faces are like great elephants, following their mother's side. They command fierce demon armies and have come out as the vanguard. May Phra Chakri raise the army and go destroy the asuras."

Then radiant Phra Kritsanu Rak heard Phiphek and rejoiced. He gave royal command to the son of the Sun: "Arrange the brave armies. We will march out to strike down and destroy the unrighteous asura host."

Then mighty Sukhrip received the command of the Garuda-bearing lord, bowed in homage, and went out.

He arranged them in a crow battle-array. The king was the head in front. The mouth was the monkey Pingkhala; the right eye was Nilpanan; the left eye was Sattaphali. The neck was the monkey Nilkhan. The Garuda-bearing lord was the swift crow's body. Chomphuphan held the left wing, and great soldier Hanuman held the right wing. The left foot was mighty Khomut; the right foot was given to Nilnon. Nil-ek was the bird's tail. The army ranks were interwoven as feathers. The outer guards were the crow's claws. Every one of them had fierce power. They all held every kind of weapon, brandishing them in commotion. The victorious battle formation was set, waiting for the lord of the discus to proceed.

Divine water fell like rain, fragrant with sweet perfume. Their trousers were woven with swan patterns and set with ruby jewels. Phra Hariwong wore heavenly cloth that the gods had brought and reverently offered; his younger brother wore cloth with a golden ground, cut with interlaced raised gold patterns. Their hip-cloths and side-flaps were radiant; upper garments and chains were all set with round ornaments. Directional plates, chest ornaments, and necklaces crossed the body; jeweled waist ornaments shone. Dragon-shaped gold armlets and diamond rings glittered like fireflies. Crystal crowns, flower ornaments, divine earrings, and ear-pieces adorned them. The elder brother bore the Brahmastra; Phra Lak took the Phlaiwat bow and arrow. Beautiful as sun and moon, they moved their hands and went up onto the celestial chariots.

Fluttering panels and pavilions were mixed with swans; their four porches were like heavenly palaces. Ten divine horses were harnessed to each. Matali sat humbly with joined hands. Rows of umbrellas and flags flashed bright; all the high regalia was complete. Drums answered gongs in a loud roar. The wheels thundered and shook the worlds. The soldiers shouted in battle tumult. Dust rose and darkened the sky as the chariots drove hard in a race of speed.
