Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-fourth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thotsakan sending Kirithon and Kiriwan against Rama's army, Phra Lak killing the brothers after their arrows destroy many monkeys, Montho completing the Sanjip rite and sending divine water that raises old and new demon dead as asura-ghosts, Rama and Phiphek discerning the rite's rule, Hanuman, Nilnon, and Chomphuphan entering Lanka in disguise, Hanuman deceiving Montho and breaking the rite, Rama praising the monkey soldiers, and the renewed battle ending at sunset when Thotsakan asks to withdraw and fight again the next day.

Montho's Sanjip Water and Hanuman's Stratagem

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king stood on his elephant amid the army. Seeing the monkey host, the asura gave royal command to his two warrior sons: "Hurry the fourfold army forward. Attack and break the enemy's forces."

Then the two yaksha sons received the command and drove the army in together for the assault.

Then the asura troops, eager for battle, brandished weapons like smoke and flame and ran in to fight the forest-monkeys.

They hurled weapons like a rainstorm. Some fired great guns. They cut, stabbed, and struggled in confusion, never easing their hands.

Then the monkey soldiers, skilled in battle, saw the yakshas breaking in with force. They gathered and pressed forward to meet them.

They rushed to snatch and steal the yakshas' weapons, breaking them by monkey strength. They cut, stabbed, and fought in tumult, and the asuras broke and scattered.

Then the four great asura captains saw the demon host dying throughout the victorious army while the monkeys drove after them. They grew angry, ground their teeth, roared, displayed their fierce strength, leapt forward in power, and began killing the monkeys.

Some struck, some stabbed wildly, and some hurled weapons, bows, and arrows. The monkey army broke and drew back, unable to withstand the asuras' power.

Then Surasen, Surakan, Nil-ek, and mighty Nilkhan saw the four yakshas driving the army back. The four monkey captains grew green-eyed with anger, gnashed their teeth, roared at the yakshas, displayed their strength, and rushed upon all four asuras.

They slapped with hands, kicked with feet, bit with mouths, grappled, and fought in a whirl of disorder. They dashed the four asuras down upon the earth, and all four died.

Then Kiriwan and mighty Kirithon saw the four kumbhandas fall. Furious, they stamped their feet and gave lion-roars that made the world tremble. They drove the Manomai horses forward and pressed hard into battle.

The monkeys broke and drew back, unable to withstand their fierce power. They ran in disorder and crashed against one another while the kumbhandas pursued and struck them.

Then Phra Lak, bright with blessed radiance, saw the two yakshas coming to harry the army while the monkeys scattered before them. He took the Phlaiwat arrow, set it on the string, aimed to cleanse the field of yakshas, drew with royal strength, and loosed it through the sky.

The sound thundered through the air and shook the earth in terror. It struck the two noble horses, and by its power they fell dead.

Then the two yaksha brothers, losing their horses as if losing their own lives, became violently angry. Each brandished his sacred bow, powerful and potent, leapt forward with yaksha strength, and by his might broke the curved rail of the chariot.

Then the younger brother of Phra Hari Rak saw the two asuras in their arrogance. The sky-ruling prince lashed them with his victorious arrows. They were struck again and again and could not withstand his force; they staggered away under the king's power.

Then the two yaksha sons, wounded throughout their bodies by the arrows, burned with anger like fire in the heavens. Each set a sacred arrow on the string, fixed his eye on killing Phra Lak, and loosed it at the royal younger brother with power.

The arrows became nine kinds of weapons and fell densely from the sky. They struck the hostile army, and countless monkey soldiers lost their lives.

Then the younger brother of Phra Hariwong saw the yakshas' arrows strike the forest-monkey troops. He drew a sacred royal arrow, powerful enough to shake sky and earth, set it on the string, and loosed it with immense force.

It became Phra Phai, blowing as a gentle breeze, and the monkeys all rose back to life. Then it struck the two asuras, and by its power their lives ended.

Then Thao Raphanasura saw his two sons lose their lives. The asura king raged like the fire at the end of an age. With one hand he seized his discus and swung it in fierce power. His ten mouths ground their teeth, and the kumbhanda hurled it with might.

It blazed like the sun. Its sound thundered through the sky up to Dusit heaven. It struck the hostile army, and the monkeys' lives ended until bodies rolled thick over the ground.

Then the solar-line Narai, master of the bow, saw the discus of the ten-faced asura lord strike the monkey forces, cutting off heads, feet, and bodies. He took the Brahmastra, drew it with mighty strength, and loosed it.

It thundered loudly and became countless arrows. It struck the demon host and destroyed the whole victorious army, while the monkeys regained their lives.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king, having lost his two beloved sons, dear as his eyes, reflected in his heart. "These human brothers are bold and skilled with sacred arrows. If I try to break them by raw power and lose, the enemy will gain the advantage. I will hold back and preserve the soldiers until lovely Montho sends the divine water." Having thought this, he ordered mighty Kalachak the yaksha to divide the forces and set them firm in crow-wing formation, holding back the monkeys so those vile ones could not rush in and break through. Then he turned his great elephant aside and withdrew to the edge of the forest.

Then Queen Montho gathered her mind and performed the rite. When the appointed seven days were complete, the power of the victorious Vedic spell shook the earth, and the divine water appeared in shining golden jeweled pots. The lady rejoiced beyond measure and ordered wise Mahothon to carry it to her husband.

Then the yaksha minister Mahothon joyfully received the pot of divine water and hurried away through the air.

When he arrived, he went straight in before the king, raised his hands above his head, and presented the powerful divine water to the lord of Lanka.

Then the brave ten-headed solar-line king, receiving the heavenly stream, rejoiced deeply. His face shone like the moon moving through its course. Seated on the neck of his splendid elephant, the yaksha king went about sprinkling the water.

Then all the asura soldiers, great and small, who had died, touched by the divine water, rose again. Old dead and new dead, officers and common soldiers alike, all became asura-ghosts and stood up from the earth as if alive: Kumbhakan, Satthasur, Wirun Chambang the yaksha, Satlung, Trimekha, the kumbhanda lord Mulpalam, Sahatsadecha, Intharachit, Saeng Athit, Kampan, Kirithon and Kiriwan, Mangkonkan the asura, Itthikai and Mahakai the two soldiers, and Thapnasura the demon yaksha. They brandished weapons in tumult and displayed immense power, then sat bowing at the lotus feet of Thao Thotsaphak, crowding the earth and pressing together before him.

Then Thao Raphanasura saw the solar-line troops and kinsmen all risen again and was delighted. His twenty hands clapped; his ten mouths laughed without cease. He commanded the ghosts to go in and break the enemy's army.

Then the yaksha asura-ghosts heard the asura king and went in to attack the monkeys.

They rushed together, cut, struck, shot missiles, crossbows, bows, and arrows, whirled in to stab, and fought hand to hand with the power of asura-ghosts.

Then all the monkey troops split apart to meet them, officers and soldiers alike, fighting close in tangled disorder.

In bands and companies they fought with fierce and terrible strength. Each side was brave and unyielding, stabbing, cutting, slapping, biting, wrestling, and striking.

Then the yaksha ghosts swarmed together to attack, pressing close against the forest-monkeys.

They broke through by their power, and the monkeys could not stand against them. The whole victorious army split and broke, losing all order in the evening light.

Then Sukhrip, great soldier of brave heart, Angkhot, mighty Hanuman, and the eighteen crowned warriors saw the monkeys breaking and piled upon one another, unable to withstand the yakshas. Each grew angry like fire, swung a trident, and drove in to destroy them.

They stabbed, cut, grappled, and hurled them down. The ghosts could not withstand their brave power, but vanished into the earth before the face of the lord of Lanka.

Then Thao Thotsaphak saw the asura-ghost soldiers thinning from his sight and disappearing. He drove the demon host forward in a rush, urged his elephant on swiftly, stood amid the army, and sprinkled the divine water onto the yaksha corpses. The ghosts rose again and returned to fight the monkeys.

Then Sukhrip, Hanuman skilled in battle, mighty Angkhot, and the eighteen monkey warriors fought while wondering in their hearts: "Why, when these powerful asuras are killed and vanish before our eyes, do they rise again?" Angry, they stamped their feet until earth and sky trembled, leapt and plunged forward, and drove in to kill the kumbhandas.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line saw the unrighteous asura troops continually reinforcing one another and pressing in to attack. He took the Phlaiwat arrow, set it on the string, fixed his eyes on clearing away the yakshas, drew with power, and loosed it at once.

Crack upon crack, like thunderbolts, the demon host died in numbers past counting. Those who were ghosts vanished away, and no corpses could be seen by the eye.

Then Thao Thotsaphak saw the Brahmastra strike and destroy the army, while all the asura-ghost troops disappeared and no longer came out to fight. Furious like the fire of time, he sprinkled the divine stream again.

In a moment they became ghosts, rising up in countless numbers. They displayed fierce power and returned to contend with the monkeys.

Then the incarnate lord, skilled in war, saw the twenty-armed king's troops fall dead by the arrow, then rise again and return to battle. The king was filled with doubt and immediately asked Phiphek: "Why do Kumbhakan, Intharachit, Saeng Athit the yaksha, Sahatsadecha the asura, Trimekha, Mangkonkan, and all the asuras who fell and died come back to life? This seems strange and wondrous."

Then Phiphek, great astrologer, received the command and examined the matter according to his learned books. Seeing clearly as if with divine eyes, he bowed and answered: "Now lovely Montho is performing the Sanjip rite. She has gained divine water and sent it to the battlefield. When it is sprinkled on the yaksha corpses, old dead and new dead alike become ghosts and demons. In that rite, attachment and sensual love are forbidden. May Your Majesty send powerful soldiers to destroy her ascetic science. Then let Your Majesty loose a victorious arrow as a barrier-net, to hold the kumbhanda ghosts in and keep them from coming out to attack."

Then Phra Chakrit, whose power surpassed the sun, heard Phiphek the astrologer. The sky-ruling king took an arrow and loosed it.

It became a seven-layer diamond net, stretched firm and unshaken, enclosing the ghost host by immense power. When this was done, he gave royal command to brave Hanuman: "You, mighty soldier, take Nilnon, Chomphuphan, and a half-ocean of monkey troops, choosing only fierce and brave warriors, and go destroy the rite of lovely Montho by your power."

Then the three victorious soldiers received the command of Phra Chakri, bowed, and hurried away.

They selected only the brave, all wise and skillful, a half-ocean of troops radiant with fierce power, and secretly hurried toward the demon city.

When they had come halfway along the road, near the royal city of Lanka, they stopped at the edge of the wild forest. Hanuman spoke and consulted the other two monkeys: "Lord Phra Narai has commanded us to come and destroy the magic rite of lovely Montho, beloved wife of deluded Thotsakan, as Phiphek has explained. What should we do? She is the mother of mighty Angkhot, at least by the custom of the world. Perhaps Pali's son would be grieved."

Then Nilnon and Chomphuphan, great soldiers, heard the wise son of the Wind and answered with discernment: "Your concern for Angkhot is very fitting. Yet we are servants at the feet of Phra Chakra, and he has sent us to destroy the rite. If the royal service of the radiant Avatar is not accomplished, the lord who rules the earth will punish us."

Then Hanuman, strong and mighty, answered the two fierce soldiers: "What you say is right. To destroy the rite this time, brute force is not fitting. We must transform ourselves and mingle with the yakshas, and then the purpose will be fulfilled. Nilnon, become a war elephant, a bold elephant in musth. Chomphuphan, with your wisdom, transform yourself into the powerful yaksha Karunarat, the rear mahout who drives that splendid elephant. As for me, I will shape my body to look like Thotsakan the asura. All the monkeys who came with us shall become strong asura soldiers. When we enter Lanka, we will laugh and rejoice, saying that the two humans, Rama and Lak, who made such arrogant tumult, have now lost their lives, along with all the vile monkey host."

Then the two skilled soldiers and all the army rejoiced together. Each raised joined hands and bowed to the lord of beautiful Mount Kailasa, gathered his mind, recited powerful spells, and the monkeys transformed their bodies.

Nilnon became an elephant, towering high into the sky. Powerful Chomphuphan became mighty Karunarat. All the monkeys changed their bodies into asuras, great and small, bearing processional regalia in dense ranks, like the victorious army of Thotsakan.

Then the strong son of the Wind raised joined hands and bowed to the righteous lord of the world and to Phra Phai, the divine lord from whom he was born. He stilled his mind, recited the magical spells, and transformed his monkey body.

By the power of the sacred spells he became the ten-faced yaksha: ten crowned heads shining bright, every weapon held in twenty hands. His body and bearing were beautiful, and his ornaments flashed with light. When the transformation was finished, he moved with stately steps and mounted the elephant.

O the conjured elephant: proud, unruly, mighty, and brave, it was harnessed with the nine gems, shining in golden star-patterned armor. Great white victory umbrellas and high regalia rose in bright rows. It lifted its feet and stepped in rhythm, moving swiftly and smoothly as wind. Demon troops marched densely around it, left and right, before and behind, pressing close together. Flags fluttered above them. Pipes, drums, and gongs joined in a loud tumult as elephant, horses, and troops hurried into the city of Lanka.

Then the monkey companies on left and right, once they had passed inside the gates, laughed loudly and called to the city people along the roadside and in the shops beside the great street: "Today the fight is finished. The two humans have been killed. The whole monkey army lies dead everywhere; not one escaped the assault of the ghosts. The royal city of Lanka will be happy and at ease, and all the asura soldiers will be freed from war."

Then the men and women of the city, great and small, not knowing the monkeys' trick, were glad. They raised their hands together in homage, gave blessings and victory wishes, laughed and rejoiced, and clapped their hands in a great uproar.

Then fierce Hanuman, brave soldier, hurried the host forward until they reached the victorious royal forecourt. He descended from the elephant's neck, made his face bright as the moon, and walked with graceful royal motion into the ritual hall.

He sat beside lovely Queen Montho on the throne, raised his hand and stroked her back, and spoke sweet words: "Look, beloved of my life, partner in thought and breath. The divine water made by Your Majesty is mighty beyond compare, greater than the amrita of the gods and all wonders in the three worlds. I sprinkled it on the yaksha corpses, and they rose to break the enemies. Lak, Rama, and the whole army lie dead throughout the field. No one remained to resist. The merit you have shown me this time is beyond limit, and your glory, lady, will be known until the end of the age."

Then soft Montho, full of love, did not recognize the deception. Believing him to be her husband, she opened her eyes and glanced up. Seeing the yaksha king, the lady raised her hands above her head and bowed at his feet.

Then the brave son of the Wind smiled with a bright face and spoke through his monkey trick: "Your lovely body and face are like those of a heavenly nymph, yet you are not used to hardship, sleeplessness, and strain. Beloved, your face has grown dark and weary. Come, beautiful one, sharer of my love, return to the victorious palace and refresh your heart." Speaking so, he took the noble lady by the hand, led her down from the jeweled pearl throne, and went to the splendid palace, with the attendant women following.

When they arrived, they sat on the golden bed in the yaksha's sleeping chamber. He leaned close to lovely Montho and spoke beautiful words.

"Look, cherished lady, soft-bodied beloved. Since I led the army out to battle the two humans, I lost soldiers in all four divisions, hundreds of thousands of demon troops beyond counting. No one could withstand the war; the solar-line host was almost ended. Only because I had you did I destroy the hostile army. From now on there will be happiness forever through all the borders of the realm."

Then lovely Montho heard the sweet speech and answered the royal words: "Since the war came and pressed against the city, my heart as wife has burned like fire. By the power of my faithful truth, the rite succeeded as I wished. Your Majesty has slain the enemies until no life remains. I am overjoyed, as if I had gained heaven."

Then the brave son of the Wind smiled and said: "For seven days and seven nights I have strained without rest to kill the enemies, until my strength was nearly spent. Only today have I found ease. I ask to enjoy my queen and take delight." Speaking so, he leaned close, embraced her, and kissed her in happiness. Gently he held the lotus of her breast and was suffused with the play of love. Like a bee descending to mingle with fragrant pollen, touching the whole flower with fine dust, the monkey fulfilled his intent.

Then soft Montho, beloved of his heart, believing him to be the twenty-armed king, was delighted. She rejoiced that her name would be famed, that the great war-thorn was ended, and that the whole mighty city would be freed from suffering by the divine water. Filled with joy, she leaned close to the splendid monkey, laughing, coaxing, and delighting on the jeweled bed.

Then Chomphuphan, brave soldier, after mighty Hanuman had led Montho upstairs, joined with all the monkeys to destroy the great ritual hall. They broke the royal fence, umbrellas, and planted flags until nothing remained in proper order.

Then Hanuman, skilled and victorious, when he had finished with Queen Montho, spoke with monkey deception.

"Lady of blessed beauty, beloved chief queen, I returned here hoping to tell you the news: the humans and monkey lords are all dead, with none left. But that wicked Phiphek has fled into the forest. He may come back and undo this, making them rise again as before. I must take leave of you, beloved, and lead out the army to catch that vile one, destroy his life, and impale him at the gate so no one will use him as an example."

Speaking so, he stepped from the radiant throne and descended from the golden palace to the shining mounting platform.

When he arrived, he mounted the elephant with the monkey soldiers and left the city of Lanka, giving the asuras no reason for suspicion.

Near the battlefield he stopped at the foot of the mountain. The three mighty leaders and the monkey army changed from asura form and became monkeys as before. Together they cut through the forest and came to wait upon Phra Chakri.

When they arrived, the three leaders bowed and reported to the radiant lord that they had destroyed the rite fully and completely in every respect.

Then the lord who upholds the worlds, hearing the three wise monkeys, was as glad as if he had gained heaven. He praised the son of the Wind: "You are quick in wisdom. Whatever work you do is deep and subtle. The merit of what you have done cannot be fully described. Wherever I send you, you accomplish my purpose. You have long been the war-fang created for me. As for Nilnon and Chomphuphan, your merit too is very great. You deserve to be foremost soldiers, without equal anywhere." Then he ordered the son of the Sun, mighty and strong, to drive all the monkeys in to attack the asuras.

Then Sukhrip, skilled and victorious, received Phra Chakri's command. The monkey lord cried out and proclaimed: "Now fierce Hanuman has destroyed the rite. Let our people hurry into battle, drive through, and break them all together."

Then the monkey troops each gnashed his teeth and pressed forward at once to fight.

The asura-ghosts did not stand and resist. Fearing the power of the splendid monkeys, they broke, died, and vanished into the earth; no ghostly corpses could be seen by the eye.

Then Thao Raphanasura saw the monkeys driving forward while the asura-ghost soldiers vanished. The divine water he had been sprinkling was all gone, and no one brought him more. In anger he drove his great elephant out to attack and stab the monkeys.

He hurled weapons down, displaying power like a lion. The monkey army broke and drew back, unable to withstand the asura's might.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanu Rak saw Thotsakan drive his elephant into battle while the monkeys broke and piled together. He took the victorious Brahmastra, which can subdue all heaven, set it on the string, drew it firmly, and the righteous king loosed it with power.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of an age, shaking every direction. It struck Thotsakan the asura, passing straight through his body by its power.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king, struck by the arrow and wounded throughout his body as if his life were ending, forced himself to remain seated upon the neck of his bold elephant. Thinking of the victorious grace of Brahma, the demon lord recited his magical spell.

When he had completed seven recitations, he blew upon himself and rubbed his whole body three times. By the battle-spell's power the arrow fell out, and there was no wound on him. Then he drew his sacred arrow, set it on the string, aimed at radiant Phra Rama, pulled with all his bodily strength, and loosed it.

Earth and sky trembled; the sound thundered up to Dusit heaven. It struck the hostile monkey army, and they fell dead everywhere in countless heaps.

Then the jewel-lord of the discus saw that the monkeys had all lost their lives, strewn by the asura's arrow. He drew the mighty Brahmastra, powerful enough to shake the earth, set it on the string, drew swiftly, and loosed it at once.

It struck the demon troops and killed them by the power of radiant Phra Narai. It also struck the asura king's elephant, which fell to the earth and died.

Then brave Thao Raphanasura, having lost both troops and the great elephant, grew furious. Standing on the ground, the asura swung the discus, aimed at Phra Rama and Phra Lak, and hurled it with force.

It shone like the sun, whirling around the royal chariot. Its roar filled the air, shaking heaven and earth in fear.

Then the radiant lord who upholds the worlds saw the yaksha's discus display its power. The king took the Phalachan arrow, set it on the string, raised his noble hand, beautiful as if shaped by a god, drew firmly, and loosed it.

The two-hundred-and-forty-thousand-yojana earth rang and shook in fear. It struck the discus and shattered it at once, and the monkeys regained their lives.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha had fought until all his weapons were spent, and the asura was in great distress. His two sons were dead; his heart was stricken as if by a discus. Hungry, faint, weary of face, the yaksha lord nearly lost his senses.

Then the monkey forces saw Thotsaphak no longer fighting and mocked the asura: "Hey, hey, look, Thotsakan! Today the driving battle has been heavy indeed. Your troops and armies were more numerous than ever. Who did you find as teacher to work such a powerful rite? Why do you no longer fight? Why hesitate and waver? Has the divine water made by the female ascetic run out? Was she busied with eyes shut to win the contest, not knowing the great event in Lanka? Just now the storm was wild; perhaps the hermitage was destroyed. That must be why no sacred water is being brought to sprinkle the asura corpses."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard this as if struck by thunder. "What can have happened? Surely the enemies have destroyed the rite. That is why they mock me and reveal this hidden matter in speech. If I remain and fight, the sun is already far down. I must withdraw into Lanka and learn the truth, whether good or ill." Having thought this, he spoke beautiful words: "Look, radiant Phra Rama. We two have battled and fought, and now evening has come. Withdraw your army to the forest palace, and I will enter Lanka. Tomorrow we will come and fight again."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard the ten-headed kumbhanda. The righteous king smiled and answered: "If you would return to the city, let it be as you wish." Having said this, he ordered the army withdrawn to the golden pavilion.
