Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thotsakan returning to Lanka, discovering that Hanuman deceived Montho and broke the Sanjip rite, comforting the ashamed queen, raising a new five-division army, fighting Rama directly, proving impossible to kill because Phra Khobut has removed and hidden his soul, withdrawing after Rama breaks his bowstring, and Hanuman beginning a deception of Phra Khobut with Angkhot in order to obtain Thotsakan's hidden soul.

Thotsakan's Hidden Soul

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha, after Phra Rama had withdrawn his army, hurried back into the city.

He came along the open fields between the shining mountain ridges. His heart was not steady; the asura thought of his beloved sons.

"Alas, Kiriwan and Kirithon, whose power could subdue the three worlds. Was it fitting for you to die by Rama and Lak, as if you were not of the highest yaksha line? From the time you were born I did not raise and guard you, for my close friend asked to take you and keep my lineage alive. Your hearts were full of gratitude, and you came to fight and lose your lives. Alas, Thao Atsakan will count the days and wait for his sons at every moment." Lamenting, he was filled with grief; tears bathed the yaksha's face, and anger and pain pressed his heart until he entered victorious Lanka.

He saw the ritual hall shattered and ruined beyond repair. More startled than before, he hurried to the bright palace.

When he reached the jeweled sleeping chamber, he saw Montho, his chief queen. He lowered himself near the lady and spoke with royal command: "Look, beautiful beloved, eye of my life. You were the one who undertook the discipline and promised to send the divine water continuously. In this battle I hoped to win because the ghosts came out to fight, and the forest-monkeys broke each time. The fighting pressed hard by the power of spirits and ghosts, but when Your Majesty's divine water ran out, we lost the advantage to the enemies. The ghosts vanished, the troops died everywhere, and while the war was still locked in contest, why did my chief queen not send out more divine water? Why was the ritual hall torn down? My hurt has multiplied beyond measure."

Then lovely Montho heard the royal words and was stunned through all her body. She bowed her head at the feet of her husband and answered the command: "How can Your Majesty speak like this? You withdrew the demon army, and the brave yaksha troops returned to the city with Karunarat the asura, saying that victory was won. You took me away from the rite, with all the attendant women, and brought me to the bright jeweled chamber and the divine sleeping couch. You said Phiphek the asura had escaped and was hiding in the forest, and that Your Majesty was going out with the army to search for the kumbhanda. How can you now say this? I am hurt almost to death. Before even a day has passed, every lady attendant will know."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard and was stunned through all his body, as if his life would end. "Surely Montho was caught in a stratagem and misled by that beast. Yesterday I wondered at Hanuman the monkey, for when army met army in battle I never saw his face, and the monkeys mocked us. My heart was already suspicious in the middle of the day. If I ask Karunarat, anyone who learns of it will mock me with contempt. What use would there be in that shame before the kumbhandas?" Having thought this, he spoke graciously: "Look, jewel among demon women. Do not be troubled or stained by doubt. I did not come in here. Hanuman deceitfully transformed his body and shaped a trick so no one would suspect him. You did not see through it, and so the ritual science was lost."

Then lovely Montho, heavenly lady, heard this as if someone had cut her down. The woman nearly lost her life. Thinking of the shame and disgrace, unable to look at the yaksha king's face, she clasped her husband's feet, wept, and fainted upon the couch.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha saw the woman in such grief, motionless and still. He was filled with love and anxiety, distressed and frightened, thinking that his wife had died. In confusion he lost all composure, raised his hands to lift the lovely woman's head, placed her on the yaksha's lap, gazed at the face of his chief queen, and lamented.

"Alas, my Montho, beloved of my heart, cherished wife. We have shared happiness and suffering, shared life, breath, and heart. Though you were deceived and your body was taken, I would not blame you or call you evil. Was it fitting for you to die and flee from me like this?" Lamenting, he embraced his chief queen while tears flooded the yaksha's eyes. His grief and distress multiplied until his sorrow nearly ended his life.

When his grief had somewhat quieted, he brought perfumed water and rubbed it over the lady's body.

Then lovely Montho, beloved of his heart, touched by the cool perfumed water, regained her senses. Her shame and fear were beyond measure. She slid down from the yaksha king's lap, beat her breast with both hands, and wept: "It was useless for me to be born. Useless that I was one of Kailasa. I was outwitted by a beast's kind. I lost my body in immeasurable shame, and lost the work of the rite as well. I have ruined the honor of the crowned lord and the power of the solar line. Your Majesty, do not preserve my life. Righteous king, kill me and let me die. Only then will the shame before the lineage of Brahma's royal house be ended." Speaking so, she sobbed as if she would lose her life.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard the woman's lament and sighed deeply. He comforted her spirit and spoke graciously: "Look, beloved lady. Do not burn your heart. I hold no fault against you. It is not that you failed to keep truth or fell through desire. All this was karmic retribution, my bright-eyed one; do not be ashamed or shaken. Though the rite has failed, that does not mean we cannot destroy them. Do not think the humans and forest-monkeys will survive." Speaking so, he drew close, embraced her, kissed her in delight, and invited his chief queen to the splendid bed. The two royals shared couch and pillow, delighting again in love, and in gladness the asura fell soundly asleep.

When dawn came and the cock crowed, and the sun looked over the mountain peak, the king bathed, put on radiant ornaments, and went out to the bright audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the glorious white umbrella, with asura soldiers gathered around him, and gave royal command: "Hey, hey, Mahothon. Prepare the companies of warriors. I will raise the demon army and go destroy the humans and forest-monkeys."

Then Mahothon, great minister, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

He mustered the army in five divisions. Phet Rawi was made vanguard, commanding a hundred koti asuras, all mounted on leaping horses. The flanking division was given to mighty Phetrawut, who commanded a hundred koti demons, all riding elephants in musth. The royal center held a thousand koti asuras, all mounted on fierce lion-beasts. Ronnasith the kumbhanda was made adjutant; his troops rode savage rhinoceroses. The rear guard was given to Ronnasak, commanding strong yaksha forces who rode tigers, lions, and red bulls, a hundred koti fierce warriors in each of the two rear divisions. All wore padded armor and helmets, stood in ordered rows, brandished weapons in pride, and tested their power in noisy tumult.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king, when the army was arranged, came to bathe in the water.

He wore streaming fragrant water, heavy with the scent of pollen. He put on curved-hem trousers and udumphon cloth bound at the waist. His fluttering side-flaps and lower cloth shone, and his upper garment was patterned with interlaced designs. Divine jeweled armor, chains, and a golden chest-plate lay upon him. Directional plates and hanging ornaments glittered with diamonds and gems; golden serpent armlets and Garuda-set rings adorned him. His ten heads wore crowns and ear-ornaments. He held weapons in all twenty hands and walked to mount his victorious chariot.

O the royal chariot: its hubs, rims, and spokes were jeweled and splendid. The yoke and frame rose in graceful curves; tiered finials and a floating throne stood above it. Rows of kinnara and gandharva forms upheld the pavilion with hanging patterns. Golden pediments were studded with gems, and five tops glowed with gomeda stones. Two thousand royal lions were yoked to it, and Lothan carried spear and shield as driver. High regalia screened the sun. Trumpets, conches, and victory gongs sounded. Flutes and drums roared; the soldiers shouted until the earth shook. Dust darkened the dawn as he hurried the army on its march.

When they arrived, he stopped the fourfold army and set it along the forest line according to the battle formation he had brought, on the auspicious great field of victory.

Then the radiant jewel-lord of the discus lay through the night on the divine ornamented couch. Stars and moon moved away from the sky; the sun shone with radiant light. Gibbons cried in the forest, birds flew seeking one another, karawik birds offered their voices, and jeweled roosters called. Bees drank deeply from flowers, carrying the streaming fragrance.

He bathed and adorned himself with the nine gems. His hand took the bow, and he walked with the grace of a flying swan out among the monkey army.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, with hundreds of thousands of ministers before him. Just then he heard a great shouting tumult thunder all the way to the victorious pavilion. He gave royal command and asked the great astrologer: "Whose mighty sound is this? Who has raised an army to attack? Is it one of Thotsakan's solar-line kinsmen, or the asura king himself? I am doubtful in my soul."

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord heard the royal command and took the omen. Observing both Atsakan and the Three-Eyed Lord according to the occult books, he knew clearly and answered the royal command: "This army coming out is not the asura's children or kin. It is Thao Thotsian, the demon lord himself, raising the brave demon army to fight."

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the astrologer's prophecy. The king commanded the younger brother of Pali: "Prepare the forces and the splendid monkey soldiers. We will raise the army and go contend with Thao Thotsakan."

Then mighty Sukhrip received the command of the Garuda-bearing lord, bowed in homage, and went out.

He mustered the soldiers of both cities, choosing only the brave and powerful. Ten divisions filled the earth, rejoicing and gnashing their teeth. Each had fierce might and could plunder the gods in heaven. Some tested their strength before one another; all were eager to break the enemies. Every one wore different garments, with heads wrapped in twisted cloth. They could lift the sun and pluck stars and moon as they wished. All held weapons, displaying terrible power until the earth shook. The victorious battle formation was set tight before the pavilion.

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak and his splendid younger brother entered the water to bathe.

The two royals cleansed themselves; fragrant water smelled of pollen. Their trousers were patterned like flying swans and flashed with ruby gems. Their cloths were of different colors, lifted at the hem and cut with gold openwork and mirror-bright patterns. Their upper garments were deep purple with golden disks. Jeweled breast-bands, pearl chest-plates, directional plates, and shining chains adorned them. Their graceful armlets were set with the nine gems; their bracelets were shaped like Vasuki serpents. Great jewel-rings, diamond crowns, flower ornaments, earrings, and ruby ear-pieces flashed. Each girded on a sword and took his bow. With hands moving in noble grace, accompanied by skilled soldiers, they mounted the shining golden chariots.

O the Vejayant chariots: nine tiers of gems shone bright. Wheel-rims and hubs were carved with patterns, and the lovely streaming flags curved at their tips. Seats in the rear bore figures of divine youths, with nagas, Garudas, and kinnari set among them. Jeweled pillars and guards were layered with elaborate ornament. Divine horses were yoked, neighing proudly and displaying their strength. Matali drove at speed, swift as wind. Phra Lak sat in front with joined hands. High regalia, chowries, parasols, and umbrellas stood around them. The army pressed densely together, with drums and gongs joining in sound. The monkeys shouted for the victory-hour until the earth rang; dust darkened the air like smoke as the troops hurried onward.

When they reached the battlefield, he stopped the great army at the forest edge and held it firm while watching the strength of the asuras.

Then Thao Thotsaphak saw Phra Rama seated in the jeweled chariot, raising the monkey army. He gave royal command to the demon ministers of the vanguard: "Drive the troops forward and kill the monkeys."

Then Phet Rawi, skilled in war, received the command of the twenty-armed king and drove the soldiers into battle.

Then the demon troops, great and small, each displayed fierce power and drove in to attack.

The left and right wings struck from both sides, while the center pierced through and cut the monkeys. Pressing forward in dense ranks, the asuras thought nothing of their lives.

Then the monkey troops of the vanguard split into crow-wings to meet them and struck together.

Companies and bands grappled in confusion, some fleeing, some pursuing. The monkeys slapped with hands and kicked swiftly with feet. The demon troops could not withstand their power, fell dead in heaps upon the ground, broke apart in every direction, and the monkeys pursued and struck them.

Then the four yaksha commanders saw the army shattered while the monkeys drove in. Each grew angry and stamped his feet. They gave lion-roars like thunderbolts, swung their maces in tumult, and came forward to meet and strike the forest-monkeys.

They lashed left and right in confusion, and the monkeys could not withstand their strength. By the kumbhandas' power, the monkeys scattered and retreated.

Then Nil-ek, Nilkhan, Surasen, and fierce Surakan saw the four yakshas attacking the monkeys. They became angry, ground their teeth, roared with intent to kill, drew their tridents and brandished them in tumult, and leapt forward to attack the four asuras.

Mighty Surasen seized Phetrawut the yaksha. Radiant Surakan seized the demon lord Phet Rawi. Nil-ek took Ronnasak and pressed him by brave force. Nilkhan leapt forward and went to destroy Ronnasith the asura.

Then the four yaksha commanders received the attack and fought back and forth, rushing to grapple the four monkeys.

The eight captains fought close and did not draw back. Yakshas struck; monkeys cut; the struggle was tangled. Each side was brave and enduring, and none relented.

Then the soldiers of Phra Narai parried and fought the kumbhandas, gnashing their teeth and leaping in to strike.

The four monkeys seized the four yakshas, broke them by monkey power, and dashed them down upon the earth. The asuras' lives ended.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king stood in his chariot amid the army and saw his four ministers fall. His ten mouths gnashed their teeth and roared until the earth shook. He set an arrow on the string and loosed it with kumbhanda power.

The sound was like Mount Meru collapsing and the ocean and underworld shaking. The monkeys died and piled upon one another by that attacking power.

Then the victorious Avatar saw Thotsakan's asura arrow strike and kill the monkey soldiers. He took the Brahmastra, set it on the string, fixed his eyes on killing, drew with power, and loosed it through the sky.

It struck the chariot in which Thotsakan rode, breaking it apart beyond endurance. The two thousand royal lions died, and the whole army lost its life.

Then brave Thao Raphanasura fell from the divine jeweled chariot. The demon king grew very angry. Nineteen hands brandished weapons, while one hand lifted the discus. He leapt with yaksha power and seized the curved rail of the Vejayant chariot.

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak saw the ten-headed kumbhanda force his way in to attack. He struck the yaksha king with the bow, and by that power the demon reeled aside. Then Phra Chakri rushed in and seized the asura.

With his left foot he planted firm on the yaksha's knee, and with his hand he pulled the yaksha's head. As the demon twisted and turned, the sky-ruling king struck the kumbhanda.

Then the ten-headed solar-line king dodged, met, and guarded against him, grinding his teeth as he drove in to fight.

He leapt up and stamped on the king's knee with terrible power, while his hand grabbed and tried to seize the bow. With weapons swinging in nineteen hands, he cut and guarded back and forth.

Then mighty Phra Chakrit rushed in and kicked the asura in the chest, making him stagger. He drew the Brahmastra, whose power shakes the earth, set it on the string, drew swiftly, and loosed it.

The victorious arrow drove on to destroy the ten-faced yaksha. It cut all twenty hands from the demon lord's body, and they flew away.

Then the brave ten-faced king, his arms severed and the pain like ruin, steadied his body. By the power of his soul removed from his body, a force guarded the yaksha's form; the arms rejoined him, and the asura took an arrow and loosed it.

It became royal nagas, countless over the earth. They lifted their hoods and spat poison as flames, and the monkeys died by their power.

Then Phra Hari Rak Chakrit saw nagas crawling and rushing from every direction by the power of Thotsakan's sacred arrow, and the monkey army dying from naga poison. He took the Brahmastra, set it firm on the string, and loosed it with power.

It became a royal Garuda, rushing through the sky. It swooped down upon the nagas and devoured them as food by its power.

Then the sacred Brahmastra went on and struck the ten-faced yaksha. His body split from his frame, and the asura's ten heads flew off. The monkeys who had died regained their lives, proud and fierce again, and shouted until all shook in tumult.

Then Thao Raphanasura, though his heads were cut from his body, did not lose his life. Because his body held no soul, the heads returned and rejoined the yaksha. His anger multiplied, and the asura set an arrow on the string.

Then the radiant jewel-lord of the discus looked and saw Thao Thotsakan the kumbhanda drawing his bow to shoot. He drew the Brahmastra, set the royal arrow on the string with raised arm, aimed to destroy the asura's life, and loosed it through the sky.

It struck the demon lord's bowstring and cut it, unable to withstand the force. It then hit the lord of mighty Lanka and pierced all through his body.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha suffered pain beyond measure. The asura recited his spell.

When the full recitation of the mantra was complete, he rubbed it over his whole body. His wounds healed as he wished by that terrible power. Then he thought: "This royal bowstring was firm and unshaken. I have fought wars in victory from the age of a thousand years until my life reached more than thirty million years, and nothing has ever even grazed this splendid bow. Now the bowstring has been cut; I do not know how to answer his power. My own strength is hungry, faint, and heavily battered. The army I brought has died everywhere and been wasted. I must withdraw; tomorrow I will return again." Having thought this, he withdrew the army and returned to his victorious city.

Then radiant Phra Sarit Rak saw Thotsakan the asura withdraw his army and return to the city. Just as the sun set and curved down behind the mountain edge, the king ordered his own troops to return to the firm pavilion.

Then Thao Raphanasura, skilled in war, arrived at Lanka city and walked up into the bright palace.

He lowered himself onto the bed, laid a hand across his yaksha forehead, and was filled with grief and distress. The asura sighed from his soul: "Alas, what am I? I look terribly ill-favored. Ever since Montho was touched on the head, my weapons and magic arts have declined. Never in all my war against these enemies has anything been like this. My heart, what can I do? Who can help me fight? It was useless for me to be of Brahma's lineage, powerful, fierce, and skilled in war, if I lose to humans and monkeys. I am ashamed before the gods." Thinking and thinking until thought was exhausted, his heart hurt as if struck by lightning. He rolled back and forth until sleep overcame him in the night.

Then the radiant solar-line Narai, when the sun's light had faded at evening, went into his sleeping place. The sweet sound of gongs and drums marked the watches, ringing clearly. Monkeys sat at guard by the fires, bright all around the golden pavilion. Phra Phai blew gently, and the king rested in supreme ease. Dew sprinkled down, and the sky-ruling lord slept through the night.

When time passed into the last watch, golden light shone bright. Jeweled roosters and birds called and flew noisily. The fragrance of flowers spread everywhere; a gentle breeze carried the scent, like divine perfume in Indra's city. The king with the bow was delighted.

He entered the bathing place and washed. Wearing ornaments worthy of the lord of the discus, splendid and beautiful, Phra Hari Rak came out to the golden pavilion.

With the monkey ministers of Khitkhin and Chomphu all assembled, he gave royal command and asked Phiphek the kumbhanda: "Yesterday the ten-headed demon lord raised his army to fight. He was struck by victorious arrows until his body was pierced through, with wounds beyond counting; his heads and arms were cut and scattered, yet they reattached and he did not die. I am greatly troubled. In all this war I have killed many yakshas, but I have never seen anything like the lord of Lanka. Why is he like this?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha heard the royal speech, raised joined hands, and answered: "The ten-headed kumbhanda does not die because Phra Khobut, the wise seer and teacher of the asura, established the Kala Kich rite. He removed the yaksha's soul from his body, placed it in a jeweled box, and sealed it with a stone fitted so perfectly that no join can be seen. That holy sage took it away and keeps it in his hermitage. May Your Majesty send a mighty soldier to deceive the great hermit and obtain the yaksha's soul. Only when it is brought away from the sage can the asura be destroyed."

Then Phra Chakrit, whose power exceeds the sun, heard Phiphek the astrologer and asked the monkey lords on left and right: "Who can volunteer for us and go to wise Khobut to trick away the asura's heart?" The king asked three times, but all the monkey ministers and soldiers stayed still, bowed with joined hands, and did not dare accept the royal command.

Then brave Hanuman, wise son of the Wind, saw the soldiers of both cities lower their faces and say nothing. He had stayed silent while the king asked three times, wishing to see which soldier would have the courage to deceive the great hermit. When no one volunteered, the splendid monkey's wish was fulfilled. He bowed his head, accepted the royal words, raised joined hands, and answered: "I, your servant, Hanuman, wise son of the Wind, have set my heart on being your soldier. I ask to volunteer at Your Majesty's lotus feet and deceive away the kumbhanda's soul."

Then Phra Kritsanu Rak heard the son of divine Phra Phai and rejoiced deeply. He gave royal command: "You, wise and subtle one, with a heart of loyalty, will take this service for us. How many monkey lords and soldiers will you bring? Choose as you think best, so long as the royal work is accomplished."

Then the brave son of the Wind heard the words of the Avatar, bowed at his lotus feet, and said: "I ask only for younger Angkhot, so he may help me think and solve the matter. We have long shared one mind and heart. May Your Majesty grant this mercy."

Then the radiant jewel-lord of the discus heard the son of the Wind and was pleased. He gave royal command: "If you wish to take Angkhot, let it be as you desire. Whatever can be managed by wisdom, consult together as brothers." Then the king gave blessing: "Go in safety, monkey. Gain the kumbhanda's heart, and let no harm or stain come near you."

Then Hanuman and Angkhot, splendid monkeys, received the blessing of Phra Chakri, raised joined hands in homage, and flew away.

When they had come near the hermitage, the son of the Wind spoke to Angkhot, his trusted companion: "The sky-ruling king has sent us to obtain the demon lord's heart. This work seems very difficult. We must devise a trick against the holy sage and make him take us to be presented to Thotsakan. We will act as his close servants; only then will we gain the heart of that deluded one. Perhaps the Garuda-bearing lord does not yet know the plan and may doubt us beneath his feet. I will return to wait upon the sky-ruling king and report the whole secret. You remain here." Having given the order, the monkey lord went back.

When he arrived, he bowed in homage, lifted the royal feet to his head, glanced toward the assembled ministers, opened his mouth, and said nothing aloud.

Then wise Phra Chakri saw Hanuman's manner and understood his intent. He leaned his ear down to hear the splendid monkey's secret, keeping the monkey's thought from the lords and ministers.

Then fierce Hanuman, skilled in battle, softly whispered to the four-armed lord: "May Your Majesty be merciful. This affair is very hard. To gain the yaksha's heart, I must use many layers of deception. If anyone comes and says anything, keep it first in your royal heart and do not be doubtful until I return to wait upon Your Majesty. Set the limit at seven nights." Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of radiant Phra Narai, flew into the air by his power, and hurried away.

He reached Angkhot, his younger brother. The son of Phra Phai descended from the sky and spoke graciously: "We will go together to the teacher's hermitage. It does not seem proper to fly there; he might take offense, thinking we show disrespect, and our work would be lost." Having said this, renowned Hanuman led splendid Angkhot along a cut path through the forest to the hermitage hall.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads before the powerful meditating teacher, embraced the holy sage's feet, and the monkeys pretended to grieve.

Then the great rishi Khobut was deeply puzzled by the two monkeys coming to weep. He asked, "Hey, monkeys, what are your homeland and names? What suffering burns you? Why have you come here in grief?"

Then brave Hanuman, wise son of the Wind, pretended to brush tears from his face and answered the great sage: "I am Hanuman, mighty in power, son of glorious Phra Phai and nephew of Pali, lord of the great city of Khitkhin. My two uncles quarreled, and unrighteous Rama killed Pali, ending his life, and set Sukhrip over the city. So I took Angkhot, Pali's son, and secretly fled with the troops through the forest. But King Sukhrip captured us and presented us to Rama, making us fight against the yakshas. Whatever was hard, I broke as commanded, always alone. I killed thousands of asuras, yet there was no reward or recompense. There was only the constant chance of being killed. I was hurt beyond measure. I heard that Thao Thotsakan is Your Reverence's patron, and that he has mercy and kindness toward ministers and soldiers. My heart loves and is loyal to the yaksha king. So we brothers have fled together, hoping to become servants of the demon lord. May Your Reverence graciously take us in and present us as soldiers. We will volunteer for royal service and destroy the humans until their lives are ended."

Then the great rishi Khobut heard the monkey's speech and immediately said: "As for your claim that you have quarreled with Rama, I cannot believe it simply by hearing. To take you in and present you to the asura king could later go wrong, and the yaksha lord might blame me, the rishi. If you two brothers are truly loyal and have fled here to rely on the lord of Lanka, then go and present yourselves. Do not fear punishment. I will chant and pray for your peace and happiness."

Then brave Hanuman, wise son of the Wind, heard the teacher's words and answered as if unable to leave. Pretending sorrow through every trick, he clasped the sage's two feet and cried, as if his life and heart would end, pleading with the holy one: "To go in and present myself, I fear the yaksha king. When Rama once sent me to seek news of Queen Sida, I broke the royal garden, killed the Sahat Kumara yakshas, and burned the city of Lanka. This offense is very great. At the first glimpse of me he will grow angry and punish me by the discus-law. How could I speak in time before the yaksha lord? Holy ascetic, please have mercy. Come protect my head and ask pardon for this splendid monkey, so I do not lose my life." Speaking so, he wept at the sage's feet.
