This is the seventy-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Hanuman completing his deception of Phra Khobut, tricking the sage into revealing and handing over Thotsakan's hidden soul, Angkhot hiding the real soul near Mount Anchan by the ocean, Hanuman being accepted by Thotsakan as an adopted son despite Montho's warning, the public rite celebrating Hanuman in Lanka, and Thotsakan sending Hanuman out with an army to fight Rama.

Hanuman Wins Thotsakan's Soul

Then the great ascetic, stern in observance, did not know the deception. Seeing the monkeys grieving, he was bewildered and thought it true, not recognizing the monkeys' wind-like trick. Compassion moved him. "If I do not take them now, these two monkeys who have fled and wish to serve the yaksha king will be lost. The lord of Lanka has no more asura lineage left; he must fight alone and is pressed almost to death. These two are important warriors and can help him win. As for me, his teacher, I cannot refuse this duty. If he learns of it, he will be hurt as if I did not know the demon king's goodness." So he said, "Look, monkeys. You have come crying and pleading. I now see the truth in every part. Do not be troubled; I will take you at once." Speaking so, he put on his bark cloth, wore the sash proper to a rishi, seized his staff and fan, came out of the hut, and hurried away.

Then fierce Hanuman, brave in war, made a trick of it. He ran and blocked the ascetic's path. With his right hand he seized the forked staff; with his left he pulled the ascetic's shoulder-bag. Pali's renowned son grabbed the belt-cord and dragged it back.

Then the great teacher Khobut saw the monkeys tugging and pulling in confusion. Puzzled, he spoke: "You two were distressed, crying and pleading to me, the rishi, to take you and present you to the asura king. I have shown mercy. Why delay the work now, snatching and pulling in disorder? Are you frightened in your souls, afraid the yaksha king will kill you? I am taking you in to wait upon him. Do you not trust me, splendid monkeys? Even for offenses heavier than these, I can ask for life and prevent death. Between me and Thao Thotsakan, all matters can be spoken of. Why are you troubled? Come, let us hurry and not delay."

Then the brave son of the Wind heard him and answered: "I rely on the feet of the sage. It is not that I fear the punishment of Thao Thotsakan the yaksha. But there is one matter that worries me deeply. Phiphek told Phra Rama, in the midst of all the monkeys, that the yaksha king had removed his heart and entrusted it to the holy sage. Is it true, as the kumbhanda said? I find it strange, for I have never seen such a thing before. That is why I ask Your Reverence."

Then Phra Khobut the rishi heard the monkey's words and was startled and shaken. "Look at Phiphek the yaksha! Alas, how could this be? He means to kill his own elder brother and win the riches of the demon city. Even if he tries to conceal it, it cannot be hidden, like covering a royal elephant with the hand. The monkeys have known for a long time; I must tell the truth." Having thought this, he answered: "The heart of the yaksha king was indeed brought and entrusted to me long ago, just as the asura said."

Then victorious Hanuman pretended to be startled and spoke by trickery: "What is this? How can such a thing be? Phra Rama is making war against Thotsakan, fixed on destroying the demon king's life. Did Your Reverence not consider this? You have kept the yaksha king's heart in a little hut. Perhaps he will send powerful soldiers to steal that heart away, as if a great holy master had arranged the death of Thotsakan himself. Your Reverence is wise. How could you not have thought of this?"

Then the great rishi Khobut heard Hanuman's speech and saw the truth in every part. He said, "Look, little monkey. What you have said is careful, subtle, and wise. You are fit to be a descendant of the lord of Lanka." Having said this, the holy ascetic, strong in meditative power, led the two monkeys back to the forest hut.

When they arrived, he went straight in, took the yaksha's heart, held it, and said, "This is Thotsakan's life. It is sealed inside stone, fitted tight and firm. The rite took seven months and seven days before the soul came out from the body."

Then the brave son of the Wind said, "Lanka is a great royal city. Why is the heart not kept there? Why was it brought and entrusted to the rishi here in the middle of the forest? What is the reason?"

Then the great teacher Khobut heard and explained: "If the demon king's heart and body are kept near one another inside the seven-tiered royal palace, the soul will return to its own place because it knows the body well. It is like a young bird waiting for its mother: when it sees the mother, it runs to her in joy. For that reason, monkey, the twenty-armed yaksha king did not keep it in the city; he feared that it would return into him."

Then fierce Hanuman, great soldier, heard wise Phra Khobut and saw the kumbhanda's heart. He rejoiced as if he had gained heaven's treasure. "The service I undertook for the righteous king will be finished as I wished. I will not need difficult labor to gain the yaksha's soul; the great ascetic has been fooled by my speech." Thinking this, he bowed at the sage's lotus feet and said, "Please hurry into the city and present me to the lord."

Then the great teacher Khobut heard without suspicion and hurried along the road.

Then the brave son of the Wind, when they came near the gate of Lanka, pretended to be startled and pulled at the rishi's robe. "What is this, holy master? You have already forgotten what we just said. You are bringing the heart close to the asura king. If it returns into his body as before, what will you do? If Phra Rama's arrow strikes him, then his life should end. Better give the heart to Angkhot and let him wait outside the city. When Your Reverence comes out, then take it back. Bring only me, the elder brother, to be presented today. When my heart has become lighter and I am safe from Phra Rama Chakri, I will present Angkhot, my younger brother, to the asura king. Holy sage, please show mercy."

Then wise Phra Khobut heard fierce Hanuman's words, saw them as true, and had no suspicion. He gave the heart of Thotsaphak into Angkhot's keeping, then led Hanuman quickly through the gates of the victorious city.

Then all the asuras, great and small, saw Hanuman and were terrified, losing all sense and composure. Fear nearly ended their lives; their bodies shook, and their faces were pale as ghosts. Like deer seeing a royal lion approach, some carried children and led grandchildren in panic throughout the yaksha city. Some demons carried their wives; others carried their fathers-in-law and ran.

They cried out in noisy tumult and not one even looked back, until they were exhausted, panting with open mouths, for they had seen his power many times.

Then victorious Hanuman told the holy sage: "Now the asuras in Lanka have seen me enter and are frightened, breaking away in every direction. Angkhot is outside the gate. Perhaps if they meet him, the work will fail, because he too offended them before, when Phra Rama sent him as an envoy. He behaved harshly toward the demon king and killed four of his soldiers. I ask leave to go tell Angkhot the proper rule. If any yaksha comes to question him, he should turn aside and say that Your Reverence has entered hoping to present us, and the asuras are afraid of the yaksha king. If I do not tell him, the work may be lost. Holy sage, please show mercy."

Then the stern ascetic heard Hanuman speak and rejoiced greatly. He said, "You are wise. Whatever you say is subtle and clever. The lord of Lanka should give you rank and dignity in the future. If he uses such a monkey lord, I think he will love you." Then he ordered him at once: "Hurry and tell Angkhot."

Then Hanuman, fierce as bitter fire, thought, "This ascetic is a teacher in name only. He is stupid and does not understand me; looking at him, there is no substance." Having thought this, he bowed in homage and ran out in a fluster.

When he reached Pali's son, the wise monkey lord recited spells, gathered his mind, and created a new stone by his power.

When it was done, he gave it to Angkhot and said, "This is the heart of the ten-faced yaksha. Take it by your power and bury it at the shore of the great ocean. Then come back and wait for the holy sage, and exchange this conjured stone for it. Beloved brother, hurry back and guard the heart well. If you see me fly up three yojanas and open my mouth like a shining moon, quickly bring the asura's heart and give it to me without delay." Then he raised his hands, joined his fingers, and prayed to Phra Phai, his victorious father: "Grant mercy. Hold still and do not blow yet, until this monkey has finished his service." Having said this, he returned to the great holy sage.

Then mighty Angkhot took Thotsakan's heart and flew up through the clouds.

He buried it beside the ocean, at the end of Mount Anchan in the south. When this was done, he quickly returned and waited for the sage.

Then Phra Khobut the rishi saw Hanuman and was pleased, and hurried onward with the monkey.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha came out into the jeweled audience hall. The yaksha king was consulting on royal business with elder ministers, officials, and great brahmin-priests. When he glimpsed his teacher Phra Khobut bringing Hanuman, he was startled.

His twenty hands seized every kind of weapon. Unable to remain seated, he rose from the bright jeweled throne and shouted in anger: "Why have you brought him, holy sage? This one is extremely insolent. Once he burned Lanka and killed many yakshas. When I performed the tunnel rite, he went down and destroyed it by force, then dragged away lovely Montho, bold and arrogant, fearing no one. Countless asura kumbhandas have died by his hand. My heart is hurt beyond all thought. I will kill him this moment."

Then the great rishi Khobut saw Thotsakan angry like fire. Smiling, he spoke: "Your Majesty, do not be angry yet. The monkey Hanuman, brave soldier, has quarreled with Phra Lak and Phra Rama and came crying to me, his teacher. He asks to become the yaksha king's servant until his life ends. He will volunteer to go out and destroy the royal enemies." He explained the matter from beginning to end and said, "I myself think well of this, and that is why I brought the monkey in."

Then Thao Thotsaphak heard the sage and rejoiced as if he had tasted amrita. He sat down, raised his hands in homage, invited the ascetic to sit upon the honored seat, and asked: "Look, fierce Hanuman. You are a great soldier. Why have you quarreled with Phra Rama? Tell the truth now. Even if he did not care for you, do not be afraid; I will care for this splendid monkey and will not let you be ashamed before the monkey army. Be loyal to me from now on."

Then the wise son of the Wind heard Thotsakan ask and was glad. He pretended to cry, tears pouring down, and said: "As for Phra Rama, truly his goodness is heavy. If I were to describe his faults, it would not be proper for me to speak. But my hurt is beyond endurance, and so I must tell it at Your Majesty's lotus feet. Through all this war I have served with immeasurable loyalty. Wherever the royal work was hard, I alone broke through it. The lord of the three worlds knows this beneath his feet. Yet there has been no reward, and sometimes I was punished. I was hurt beyond description and fled to rely on Your Majesty's lotus feet." He deliberately told many crafted accusations, all invented and strung together at length. "If Your Majesty cares for me, the monkey soldiers will surely flee here. Then only Rama, Lak, and Phiphek the powerful yaksha will remain, feeding on their tears; I will see their faces at that time."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha heard the son of the Wind and rejoiced as if he had gained sixteen treasures. His battle-skilled soldiers, solar-line kin, friends, and allies were all dead; war pressed without pause, and his heart was distressed as if swimming in a whirlpool. Finding a raft and log to cling to, and seeing that this monkey had shown fierce power and endurance from the beginning, he smiled and said: "When you broke the garden and burned Lanka, I said then that I would care for you. But you would not stay, fighting to the death and returning to your master. What reward did he ever give for your merit?"

Then fierce Hanuman, skilled in battle, heard the twenty-armed king, sighed, and answered: "I loved Phra Rama because I thought I would gain honor. Alone, I cared nothing for my life, because I thought he still had mercy. But if Your Majesty will care for me, I am not glad to remain with him. Now Phiphek is my enemy, stirring the king every day. Phra Rama listens to one side only and never turns back or pauses to ask what is false or true, wrong or right, with justice. My bitterness is beyond measure. When I burned the city, my only reward was a bathing cloth. I had to wear and wrap only that one cloth morning and evening. The misery and humiliation hurt my heart beyond telling. This war is not difficult. I ask to volunteer to seize Phra Lak and Phra Rama and present them at Your Majesty's feet."

Then Thao Raphanasura heard the monkey's speech and was pleased, seeing truth in every part. He gave royal command to the demon ministers, great and small, to the poets, swift astrologers, and all who waited there: "Now Hanuman, skilled in war, has fled radiant Phra Rama and has come to rely on us in righteousness and sincerity, as he says. Or is this a trick? All of you, quickly discuss it. Shall we care for him in Lanka? What do the asuras think?"

Then the brahmin-priests and ministers, great and small, heard the lord's command, bowed in homage, and consulted together.

They agreed, bowed their heads, and reported to the radiant lord: "This monkey lord who fled here intends to rely upon Your Majesty's feet. He said he had quarreled with Phra Lak and Phra Rama, and when questioned, he answered at length. His words have been steady from the beginning; we see no deception in his speech. His face and bearing show distress, and so he came secretly to the rishi, pleading with loyalty. We have no doubt. Since this monkey has fled heat to seek coolness, he seems fit to be cared for. Lord of the three worlds, decide with wisdom."

Then the ten-headed yaksha heard the ministers' report and rejoiced, for it matched his thought, as if he had gained divine wealth in Dusit jewel-palace. He called Hanuman close, looked at his face, and said: "I will care for you as my son and make your glorious rank known, like Intharachit the asura, without any stain." Then he spoke to the teacher who had brought Hanuman: "Your merit is greater than the three worlds and immense beyond description."

Then learned Phra Khobut heard and said: "Look, asura king. Since Your Majesty will not punish him and will care for this splendid monkey, I am glad to have helped the war."

When this was done, he instructed Hanuman: "Attend carefully to every duty. Be the eyes and ears of the king. Do not offend the feet of the lord." Speaking so, he gave blessing: "May you be firm in supreme happiness." Then he took leave of the asura king and descended from the bright palace.

Then Angkhot, nephew of Thao Kosiy, who had been sitting and waiting for the great sage at the gate of the victorious city, saw the ascetic, raised joined hands in homage, and gave the conjured stone to the holy one.

Then Phra Khobut, teacher strong in meditation, did not know the deception. He received the stone from the monkey and said, "Look, Angkhot. Wait here for Hanuman a while longer." Having spoken, he left the city and walked back to his hut.

Then Pali's radiant son, when he had finished handing off the sage, flew away.

He came to the foot of Mount Anchan beside the great ocean, guarded the buried heart, and waited with full attention for Hanuman.

Then the brave ten-headed solar-line king left the radiant jeweled throne and entered the shining divine palace.

He lowered himself to sit on the seat beside his chief queen and spoke sweet words: "Beloved, I will tell you this. The war with Rama and Lak no longer weighs on my mind as before. Mighty Hanuman has now fled in and come to me, saying he had quarreled with Phra Rama and was deeply hurt. From the moment I saw him, my heart was moved, as if he were my son Intharachit. I am more delighted than if I had gained the emperor's jewel, for the enemy's strength will be lessened now that their war-fang has come to my side."

Then lovely Queen Montho heard her husband's royal words, raised joined hands, and answered: "Fierce Hanuman is loved by Phra Rama as his right eye. For him to say he was hurt and therefore fled to serve Your Majesty, I think this is wrong. One called an enemy will not speak in straight truth. To make an enemy into a friend is like raising a poisonous serpent. Your servant sees no benefit in it. In time he will bring harm. Lord of the three worlds, do not trust the enemy."

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard his chief queen's comparison and counsel. His ten mouths laughed merrily, and the kumbhanda clapped his hands. He gave royal command: "Lovely one, do not be uneasy. I questioned him at length and consulted all the ministers. Wise Phra Khobut was there too. Who would be more foolish than a monkey? It is easy to know a man's heart; all kinds of things can be searched out. He is truly loyal to us. If there had been suspicion, the sage would not have brought him." Saying that the monkey would cause no harm, he told her not to doubt, and then walked out to the royal hall.

When he arrived, he sat upon the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. The kumbhanda ministers bowed all around. He gave command to the great Paowanasura: "Tell the officers outside and inside that I will celebrate Hanuman. Arrange the royal garments and ornaments: crown, earrings, pearls, breast-plates, chest ornaments, chains, and shining divine rings." Then he gave command to the four royal astrologer-priests: "Find an auspicious hour and minute according to the proper time."

Then the four yaksha astrologers bowed their heads to receive the royal command and examined the manuals. They purified the auspicious hour, the decorative marks, the lunar motion through the zodiac, calculated the great minute, and compared the divisions.

When they had finished, they bowed and reported to the radiant lord: "Tomorrow, when the sun rises bright, with the moon in Capricorn, the hour at two mong and six bat is auspicious. The divine kings will gather in assembly. It will increase lasting prosperity, and Your Majesty will defeat the enemies."

Then Paowanasura the yaksha bowed his head to receive the royal words, raised joined hands, and went out.

He sent written orders to every officer, both military and civil, left and right, according to the royal command, inside and outside the palace.

Then the diligent officers received the notices and arranged everything in bustling haste.

The palace people prepared the palace, laying carpets in all the large and small places, hanging curtains and partitions inside, bright, intricate, and splendid. The asura women of the kitchen set baisi offerings on left and right, and golden candles in jeweled stands, according to the kumbhanda's command.

Then the ten-headed solar-line king, when the bright sunlight of morning had risen, came out to the victorious audience hall.

He gave royal command, ordering splendid Hanuman, the great soldier, to bathe and delight himself in the splendid place.

Then the brave son of the Wind received the command of the ten-headed demon lord and went to cleanse and bathe his body. He put on raised-hem trousers and cloth patterned with lions and scrolling designs, shining chains and chest-plates, and a bright jeweled crown.

Then the brave ten-headed solar-line king led fierce Hanuman by the hand up onto the splendid divine platform, amid elder ministers, royal poets, solar-line yakshas, and beautiful attendant women in the shining great palace.

"The hour has come!" The astrologers opened the baisi blessing. Victory gongs were struck as the sign, and trumpets thundered with music. The women attendants sang; drums, rammana, thon, and thap sounded loudly. The brahmin-priest lit a candle flame and fixed it in the fashioned jeweled stand.

"Turn, turn the candles." They circled from left to right, passing and receiving them in order, while shouts and acclamations rang in tumult. When the seventh round was complete according to the ritual books, the priest put out the victory candle and waved its smoke over the monkey. Then he marked Hanuman's face with auspicious powder. The yaksha king rejoiced with the assembly, and the royal teachers, ministers, and soldiers gave blessings to splendid Hanuman.

Then brave Thao Raphanasura, when the auspicious rite was finished, gave command: "I am without a glorious son to carry on the solar line hereafter. Having gained you, dear as my eye, I will care for you as an adopted son. Nothing shall trouble you. Live in lasting happiness, so I may rely on you, fierce warrior, to fight the royal enemies."

Then fierce Hanuman, splendid son of the Wind, heard Thotsaphak's words and pretended to be glad. He deliberately bowed low and crouched in fear from far away, but the monkey did not wai the kumbhanda.

Then the ten-headed solar-line king commanded fierce Hanuman: "You who are the adopted son of your father, go live in the divine palace. Rejoice in happiness with the beautiful heavenly women whose forms delight the heart."

Then the wise son of the Wind received the command of the victorious demon king and went to the jeweled palace.

When he arrived, he climbed onto the throne-seat prepared for a royal solar-line yaksha. It was vast with splendid gems, like a shining great heavenly palace.

Then the lovely attendant women assigned to the jeweled palace learned that Hanuman the monkey had come to live in the divine residence. Each was glad at heart. They dressed every woman on duty and prepared the bedding and equipment in busy haste.

When every attendant was prepared and nothing was missing, they walked gracefully up to serve the monkey.

When they arrived, each bowed her head and waited upon the monkey lord skilled in battle inside the splendid palace room, moving with graceful gestures.

Some women served with fans, waving them for the splendid monkey. The women musicians sang continually in harmony; rammana, thon, and thap answered one another. The sound was like heavenly music, deep, high, plaintive, and interwoven, bright and sweet enough to seize the heart.

Then fierce Hanuman, great soldier, saw the lovely attendant women, beautiful and pleasing to the eye, and heard the sweet singing voices that caught the heart. He felt affectionate delight among the young ladies.

He came down from the jeweled throne, moved by desire in the world. He teased and played with the young women, caressing the lovely form of every lady. He was absorbed in the flavor of love with the beautiful young women, filled with happiness and joy upon the splendid bed.

When dawn came and the sun looked over the mountain peak, he washed in the river, adorned himself with shining ornaments, descended from the radiant palace, and went up to wait upon Thao Thotsakan, with the attendant women following.

When he arrived at the bright hall, with ministers great and small assembled, he sat before the officials and inner ministers, waiting upon the lord of Lanka.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king saw Hanuman come up and was delighted beyond thought. His ten faces shone like the moon, and the kumbhanda gave command: "You of mighty and excellent power, dear as your father's life, are you in happiness and well-being in the shining jeweled chamber? Have the lovely women danced and sung to please you? All those concubines and attendants do not yet know your nature. Whatever will suit your heart, consider it calmly. Yet one thing troubles me greatly: you did not raise joined hands to me. This differs from the ancient custom between father and son."

Then the son of Phra Phai heard the kumbhanda king and, with wisdom, twisted the matter into explanation: "Your Majesty's goodness is like that of a father, and the debt of being born from one's father is greater than sky and earth. My failure to bow is a great offense, and I will explain it at Your Majesty's lotus feet. When I became Phra Chakri's soldier, I had not first bowed to Phra Phai my father, so I did not raise joined hands to him. Only after many nights had passed and I had paid homage to my father did I bow to Phra Rama. This is the truth, no lie. If Phra Phai blows here and I have bowed to him, then I can join my fingers, bow my head, and pay homage to Your Majesty. Father, do not be suspicious. Forgive this son."

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha heard Hanuman's speech and did not know the monkey's trick. He said, "Look, bright son. Everything you say is proper and true. Whose goodness can be greater than a father's? This time you shall become the crown of the yakshas. Beloved wise son, think carefully how to destroy the enemies."

Then victorious Hanuman heard Thotsaphak's words, and the monkey lord answered in a pleasing way: "The war against the two humans cannot escape my hands. Now that I have come up, I ask leave to go. If I gain the chance, your son will seize Phra Rama, Phra Lak, and the ugly yaksha Phiphek and present them to my royal father, not offending Your Majesty's feet by even a speck of dust."

Then Thao Raphanasura heard Hanuman's words and was pleased beyond measure, as if he had gained treasure greater than all the three worlds. His ten faces laughed and smiled. The yaksha king ordered Mahothon: "Prepare a fourfold army, brave, fierce, and skilled in war, like the army of mighty Intharachit, to go out and fight the enemies."

Then Mahothon the yaksha minister received the command of the lord of the earth, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He mustered a fourfold demon army, selecting only the bold and brave. Foot soldiers wore splendid armor and held matchlock guns ready. Horse soldiers all carried spears and rode with hard-driving strength. Elephant troops bound the elephants in musth, of the Chathan breed with curved tusks. Demon mahouts held hooks ready, each fierce as a lion. Chariot troops yoked horses; their hands held javelins, eager for war. They were arrayed in ordered ranks, like rows of waves in the ocean, brandishing excellent weapons until they filled the earth in tumult.

Then the ten-faced yaksha king, when the army was arranged, gave royal command. He firmly instructed the fourfold commanders: "Hurry and keep careful guard. If my beloved son is harmed, I will kill the whole victorious army." Having spoken, he gave Hanuman a royal arrow and bestowed his blessing: "Go subdue the hostile foes. May your heart be blessed. May the monkey enemies be destroyed, defeated, and scattered. Seize the humans today, my beloved son, glory of the demon city."

The attendants opened the golden pipes, and a fine spray touched the splendid monkey's body. They rubbed him with fragrant flowers. He put on bright curved-hem trousers and gold-ground cloth with raised patterns, ornamented with royal lions and scrolling stems. His side-flaps and hanging cloth were splendid. His upper garment was delicate with pierced designs. Directional plates, coral chest ornaments, three emerald chains, serpent-shaped gold armlets, and diamond rings set with Garuda forms adorned him. He wore a lotus-ruby crown and radiant golden earrings, took the arrow, stepped gracefully from the golden palace, and mounted the chariot.

O the war chariot: three curved rails rose with deep layered ornament. It was the honored seat of the ten-headed king, with tiered pavilion and golden throne. It was yoked with a thousand pairs of royal lions, fierce and leaping proudly. The charioteer drove boldly. High regalia and golden flags alternated above. Curved trumpets and foreign trumpets joined their sound with gongs and drums. The warriors shouted until the forest rang as the army hurried onward.
