Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Hanuman using his false defection to lead a demon army against Phra Lak, winning Thotsakan's trust through staged combat, receiving Intharachit's palace and Suwannakanyuma, and then drawing Thotsakan out to the field with a promised signal that will set up Rama's attack.

Hanuman Draws Thotsakan Out

Then Phra Harirak, radiant and noble, sat upon the shining divine seat in the golden pavilion. Around him stood fierce soldiers from the seventy-seven oceans, all gathered before him, bowing thick as stars around the moon in the sky. He heard a thunder of sound shaking the emerald mountains, like surf beating the shore and making the whole earth tremble.

He gave royal command and asked Phiphek the yaksha, "This army that comes today, which asura can it be?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command of the lord of the three worlds and cast the time according to the minute. When he had finished, he bowed at the lotus feet of radiant Phra Narai and reported: "This army that comes today is all asura troops. But the one who is their commander puzzles me greatly. He is not of the solar line in Lanka, and to call him the yaksha king would also be wrong. It seems he may be a war-skilled soldier from beneath Your Majesty's feet. Let Phra Lak, lord of the earth, take a strong force and go see."

Then Phra Chakrarat, jewel-bright, heard Phiphek the asura and pondered. "It seems the son of Phra Phai has devised a trick to deceive the yakshas and get the heart. That is why Phiphek has spoken only by hint." Having thought this, he ordered beloved Phra Lak: "You must raise the strong army and go out to fight the enemy. If the foe is powerful, hold him firm and wait for me. Do not be careless or too proud in the asura battlefield." Then he commanded the brave son of the Sun, "Prepare the troops for my fierce younger brother."

Then Sukhrip, skilled in war, received the order, bowed his head and hands, and hurried out.

He mustered monkeys on left and right into a great battle array. The troops of mighty Khitkhin all held fire-guns and were made the vanguard, ready to break the place of heaviest pressure and storm it. In the center he chose steady fighters bearing glaives for the thrust and cut. In the rear stood the Chomphu monkeys, all diligent, holding spears in shifting guard, each eager to test his power. Some carried javelins, lances, pikes, and bows; some carried tridents, swords, and daggers. They swung them in flashing light, filling the ground.

Then the brother of Phra Harirak, when the auspicious hour had come, entered the bathing place.

He bathed and refreshed his body, the cool water falling over him like rain. He anointed himself with divine perfume mixed with lotus pollen from the city of Indra. He put on godly trousers netted with gold and set throughout with pearls, and a pair of garments fit for the lord of heaven, patterned like plantain-stem and kinnari dance. The swinging panels and jeweled side-cloths framed his body. His tunic was a deep blue-green. A topaz breast-jewel, directional plates, and sacred chains adorned him. Gold bracelets, armlets, and rings shone; his crown was circled with pearl. Taking his powerful bow, bright as doomsday fire, he mounted the splendid golden chariot.

O chariot, divine chariot, made carefully by Kosi and the three-eyed lord. Its lifted curve bore a three-tailed golden banner; its busabok shrine looked like a jeweled palace. Glass panels and curling ornament lined it; floating garudas, grappling lions, and rich designs covered it. Four strong horses were harnessed, and Matuli guided them, hand upon the reins. High insignia, yak-tail fans, victory flags, dragon banners, and signal flags rose above. Troops crowded the ground while pipes, gongs, and drums sounded together. The horses neighed, the monkeys shouted, the earth rang, and dust darkened the air like smoke as the army hurried onward.

When they arrived and saw the asura army set along the foot of the great mountain, Phra Lak ordered the mighty troops to halt and hold firm while he watched their movements.

Then victorious Hanuman stood in his chariot amid the army and saw Phra Lak marching out with the troops. He asked the asura Lothan, "When Intharachit the yaksha formerly raised an army and came out to oppose us in battle, what did the kumbhanda do when the armies met? Did he send only the vanguard to fight first, or did the whole great host attack together?"

Then Lord Lothan the yaksha bowed with raised hands and answered: "When Intharachit went out to war, the royal army was held firm at the forest edge. When he saw the enemy advance, he ordered the vanguard out to fight the monkey troops while the lord watched their strength first. Only afterward did he join battle and shoot his arrows to destroy the foe. The yaksha royal kin all did the same. Yet the yakshas lay dead across the earth by the hands of the monkey troops."

Then the brave son of the Wind heard and said, "This time I have come intending to serve the yaksha king. I will seize both Rama and Lak, not making the troops suffer as the asura line of the demon city did. I alone will strike and drive the army apart. By my fierce, victorious strength I will take the ordinary men alive. Let the yakshas remain here. I will break the enemy for you to see. I will not make the troops labor in hardship; all of you may watch at ease."

Then all the demon troops, great and small, heard mighty Hanuman and were glad as if they had gained a shore in the sky. Each lifted his hands in homage and blessed the monkey lord. Then they withdrew and fixed their eyes on Hanuman.

Then the brave son of Phra Phai got down from the jeweled divine chariot and leapt forward to strike and fight.

Alone, without pausing, he displayed terrible power like a lion, sweeping left and right in close combat, striking and cutting until all was confusion.

Then the monkey troops, great and small, saw mighty Hanuman leap, pursue, and charge. Each feared his power, lost courage, turned pale, and shook. They broke apart, trampled one another, and some fled for refuge with Phra Lak.

Fear of fierce Hanuman was like seeing death himself. Their breasts trembled and their hearts shook; they felt as if their lives were ending.

Then radiant Phra Lak saw the son of the Wind display power and drive the monkeys toward him. He was bewildered and suspicious. "Hanuman went to serve by getting the asura's heart. Why has he now become an enemy? He has gone back to join Thotsakan, vile, unrighteous, and wicked, and has raised troops to oppose us without fearing the feet of the lord. I never thought Hanuman could do such a thing." The more he thought, the more anger filled him. He commanded mighty Sukhrip and Phiphek the yaksha to go round up the monkeys of the vanguard who had fled into the forest and bring them back out to fight.

Then Phiphek and Sukhrip, skilled in war, received the royal words with bowed hands and went to gather the monkey troops.

They searched through the dense forest, turning through paths and blocking every place. They caught monkeys one by one, but in a moment each slipped away again. When they caught one, another vanished. Common soldiers and leaders could not be held together, and the whole battle order fell into confusion.

Then victorious Hanuman alone drove hard and attacked in the middle of the monkey army.

The left and right wings broke apart under the force of the battle-skilled monkey. He delayed the fight until the sun sank low toward evening. Then he reached the front of the chariot of the younger brother of Phra Chakri. The monkey lord arched his brows and made a face, then pretended to speak arrogantly: "Look, Phra Lak, lord of the earth. Do you know who has come out to attack? You and Phra Rama have used me from the beginning, sending me to do war. Every time I gained only words; I bathed in sweat instead of water through great labor. As for rewards and recompense, not even clothes were given me. I came to stay with Thotsaphak and serve the yaksha king. In less than three nights, before I had even come out to fight, I received a crown, earrings, chains, necklaces set with gems, clothing, silver, gold, and royal wealth beyond counting, together with women and a high three-faced palace. I live in happiness and pleasure as if I had gained the wealth of heaven."

Then Phra Lak of the solar line heard this and anger crowded his breast. He answered by royal command: "Hey, fierce Hanuman. What are you thinking? My elder brother and I live in the forest; what could we have to give and divide? When the war is finished and he returns to rule, he promised that you would govern a city. You made merit and now turn it into harm. What use is that, splendid monkey? The words you speak are like those of a base, ill-omened man. At first you acted in truth and loyalty; why are you foul at the end? You look only to the wealth of the yaksha lord, not loving yourself or fearing karmic retribution. What a waste for you to be son of Phra Phai, a noble male with honor. Are you not ashamed before humans and gods? Who will ever count your face as good?"

Then victorious Hanuman heard the younger brother speak. The monkey lord clapped his hands and answered, "Hey, look, Phra Lak. In what rulebook is it written that one points to a bird on the tip of a tree, or sows rice in a field and then waits for a calf to grow big later? Only after victory over the asuras would your elder brother give reward. I fight and struggle alone; if I die in the middle of the work, it is all wasted, and to expect such a prize is wrong. Phra Lak, stop speaking. I will not listen to what you say. But twilight is falling, and the sun is near setting. If there were still daylight, I would bind all of you. Even you, Phra Lak, would not be spared; I would seize you for Thotsakan, lord of Lanka." The monkey lord deliberately shouted these words so the yakshas would hear clearly. Then he drew back, mounted the bright jeweled chariot, ordered the fourfold demon army to withdraw, and the hundred-thousand asura soldiers roared until the earth shook as they returned to the city.

When he reached the jeweled reception platform, bright and splendid, he descended from the adorned chariot and went up to wait upon the lord of Lanka.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king saw Hanuman come up and rejoiced with delight. He spoke in gracious words: "Look, beloved son, splendid one. You went to subdue the enemy. Did you gain advantage? How was it?"

Then the thoughtful son of the Wind heard the lord of mighty Lanka and answered with quick wit: "If I report only according to the truth, it will sound as if I proudly praise myself. Whether I won or lost ground, all the asuras know it. Your Majesty, of the line of Brahma, should ask the soldiers who went with me. Then Your righteous Majesty will know beneath your feet."

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha heard Hanuman speak and gave royal command: "Look, hundred-thousand brave soldiers, all you troops and warriors. My beloved son went out to fight. How bold and wise was he? Compared with Intharachit, in thought and power, how is he? Who seems better in battle?"

Then the yaksha soldiers answered the royal words according to what they had seen. "Hanuman, skilled in war, fought with bold power, making no hardship for the army. Alone he pressed and killed the enemy. The countless monkeys could not withstand his fierce power and all broke apart, like deer catching the scent of a strong lion. The monkey lord drove the attack to Phra Lak's chariot and mocked him there, reproaching him with harsh words in every way as he pushed forward. If sunset had not been near, he would surely have captured Phra Lak. Hanuman is powerful, quick, and full of intelligence. To compare him with Intharachit is plainly far from equal, like earth beside sky, beyond comparison. How could a stained shard be compared with a wish-fulfilling jewel? Lord of the three worlds, why should Your Majesty doubt?"

Then the ten-faced yaksha king heard the soldiers' words and was delighted because they matched his thought. He came down and embraced Hanuman, then made royal proclamation: "You of mighty, excellent power are like the life of your father. You deserve to rule the wealth beneath the shining white umbrella, to be crown of Lanka city and glory of the kumbhanda host. I and Montho and Lady Sida will go live together in the forest. I will give you all my women to honor your victory. You are weary from war, beloved son; go bathe, eat in pleasure, and enjoy the young women within." Having spoken, he ordered the great chief minister: "Bring all the wealth of mighty Intharachit and give it to Hanuman. Give also Lady Suwannakanyuma, his dearly beloved wife, and the dancing women who serve her."

Then diligent Mahothon, minister of rank, received the command of the kumbhanda king, bowed in homage, and came out.

He prepared the royal garments and ornaments of Intharachit the yaksha, and all the rich possessions, according to the asura's command.

Then the victorious son of Phra Phai rejoiced at the granted wealth and came to Intharachit's palace.

When he arrived at the royal residence, delightful and grand like Dusit, he ascended the golden shining couch adorned with many jewels.

Then Mahothon of great rank handed over the rich possessions to Lord Hanuman. "These things are the gift of the august father, a reward for your brave heart. He gives them in place of victorious Intharachit. Mighty one, accept them."

Then the thoughtful son of the Wind received the palace and heavenly wealth with glad delight.

Then lovely Suwannakanyuma, who had been the chief queen of the asura Intharachit, came with her women. Her beauty moved compassion like a lady in the palace of Dusit; she was slender, graceful, pleasing to behold, and complete in manner and bearing. With her came groups of court women, lovely as paintings, adorned in splendid dress and ornaments, all entering together.

When they arrived, they joined their hands and bowed humbly before the splendid monkey lord. Some waved fans and served according to their posts.

The women attendants sang in lamenting melody, long-drawn and soft. Strings, bows, drums, and flutes played through the hall; clappers and small cymbals kept time together. Some sang and danced with rammana, thap, and answering voices, sweet as heavenly music. Their wavering tones rose and trembled until the jeweled palace rang.

The dancing women danced, extending their arms and tracing graceful lines. With sidelong glances and gentle steps they came near, then turned in circles and changed hands, casting out arms and shoulders with charm. Beautiful, slender, and delightful to see, they bent into the horse-riding pose. They danced in circling patterns like wheels, moving to the rhythm of strings and bowing, easing and joining their motions to serve the mighty monkey lord.

Then the son of Phra Phai sat upon the jeweled golden seat, watching the women dance and listening to the song, sweet as music of heaven. Yet his mind was bound in longing for Queen Suwannakanyuma. He lowered himself from the jeweled throne, raised his hand, stroked the lovely woman's back, gazed at the face of the chief lady, and spoke graciously.

"Beloved younger one, dear one, finest in beauty, by merit I once made I have been led here to meet you, jewel of my heart. Thao Thotsakan, my father, has graciously given you to me. Flower of heaven, lovely one, please show me mercy."

Then lovely Suwannakanyuma heard Hanuman speak and answered him: "Your Majesty, please be gracious first. I am deep in suffering. My husband Intharachit has only just died; not even half a month has passed. My mind is shaken as if my breast were broken, and tears do not leave my face. How could my heart yet love?"

"Fair one, beautiful young woman, finest in delight, deep grief does not belong only to you. All who are born on the earth must share it. Put it out, jewel of my eyes; listen to me and do not burn in sorrow. Today is a good day, fit for joining in pleasure and lasting auspiciousness. Beloved, do not delay. War will continue; perhaps sour fruit will not become sweet. I am a royal servant; young beauty, show me kindness." Speaking so, he teased and coaxed her with longing, touched the lovely woman, and slipped his hand about her.

"Powerful lord, please be gracious to your servant. Why do you act like this, without pity? I remain your servant and cannot go beyond your feet. There are many women here to delight the heart, all bright and beautiful. Please go enjoy love with them. Do not make such disorder and cause me shame before the asuras."

"Heart's beloved, lovely soft-bodied beauty, I do not desire any of these attendant women. You yourself, young one, are like my own eyes and my delight. Do not cut off affection and leave me to bear this pain." Speaking so, he leaned close and kissed her with longing, holding and clasping her fast until the spirit shook. The ocean foamed in waves, struck the shore, and thundered; great whales breathed mist, and heavenly rain fell over the sea. The two joined in pleasure and love, rich in the taste of their union, resting in happiness through the night upon the couch.

Then lovely Suwannakanyuma, having shared delight with the wise monkey lord, forgot grief, sorrow, and lament. The young lady was filled with joy; she forgot even her husband Intharachit, forgot herself and her body. She only clung close, not leaving him, overcome with longing. She kneaded and massaged his lotus feet and marveled at the monkey lord.

Then Phra Lak, brave in war, after Hanuman withdrew his army into Lanka city, did not yet know the wise stratagem of the splendid monkey. His anger and fury doubled, and he spoke: "Look, son of the Sun. What is this Hanuman? He does not fear the feet of the lord of the three worlds. He has gone back to join Thotsakan. I am greatly astonished. If I withdraw the army, perhaps he will follow to attack and we will turn too late and lose ground. We must hold firm here beside the mountain slope. You and Minister Nilnon, two monkeys, return to the pavilion. Report the arrogant, treasonous words with which he insulted my elder brother, and make the mighty lord know every matter beneath his feet."

Then the two brave monkey officers received the order of the younger brother of the avatar, bowed to his lotus feet, and hurried away.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads before the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds and reported: "Fierce Hanuman, the monkey, has acted falsely toward Your Majesty's feet. He has joined Thotsaphak the asura, behaving with great swagger. He raised demon troops, charged out, and chased and killed the forest monkeys until they broke back to Phra Lak's army. Proud of his power, he spoke grossly and insultingly." They explained the details as they had seen and known them.

Then Phra Chakrit, whose power surpassed the sun, heard victorious Sukhrip and pondered. "It seems the son of Phra Phai is using a trick to deceive the yakshas. To say he has joined the asuras, as Sukhrip says, must be wrong. Phra Lak does not know, and so he is angry and lays blame on the splendid monkey." Having thought this, he ordered the younger brother of Pali: "You two hurry back. As for the report that Hanuman has turned false and acted in rough treason, tell Phra Lak to wait and hold firm. I will march out to fight."

Then the two battle-skilled soldiers bowed their heads to receive the order of the four-armed lord, and the monkeys hurried away with power.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to Phra Lak, the younger brother, according to the royal command of mighty Phra Chakra.

Then Phra Suriyawong, Narai Chakrit, sat upon the shining jeweled seat, silent in thought. "Hanuman told me of this before; no one else can know it. He must be devising an inner stratagem to deceive the asura and take the heart. Phra Lak is still young in understanding and does not know the splendid monkey's tactics. Perhaps at daybreak Hanuman, wise as he is, will again use deception and bring the demon army to fight. Phra Lak may refuse to yield and the battle will become confused, carrying the matter too far."

"I must go out and see, to know whether it is good or bad." Having thought this, when dawn broke he came out from the shining victory pavilion.

He gave royal command to Chomphuphan, splendid monkey: "I will march out to fight. Prepare the troops together."

Then diligent Sri Chomphuphan received the order of the garuda-bearing lord, bowed in homage, and came out.

He mustered monkeys into the procession to follow Phra Chakra, diamond of the three worlds. He chose only those of power, brave of body and brave of heart in war. Each troop could dive into the earth and travel underground to the back of the ocean; some could go by the fierce underfire and emerge in the middle of the seven ranges. Some could walk through the sky, roaming to the far roads of heaven. All were of divine stock, fierce and strong in power. They carried pikes, glaives, swords, and spears, swinging and turning them, set in ranks like the scales of a naga before the shining pavilion.

Then radiant Phra Suriyawong, the Narai lord, when the army had been arranged, went in to bathe his body.

Divine water streamed from jeweled vessels like the rain of Bokkharaphat. He anointed himself with perfumed golden powders, their scent spreading through the soul. He put on trousers patterned with swans, then wore cloth of fine khomphat fabric. The side panels and swinging ends were ornate; his robe was like Indra's, threaded with gold. Directional plates, a pearl breast-jewel, emerald sacred chains set with rubies, gold bracelets, armlets like coiled nagas, and rings with garuda designs adorned him. He wore the great crown with diamond ear-guards and bright jeweled earrings. Taking the Brahmastra weapon of fierce power, he walked to mount his royal chariot.

O Wetchayan chariot, golden-bodied, its yoke gracefully arched. Jeweled hubs and spokes were set against the wheels, and three-tailed banners fluttered at the tips. Images of kneeling gods with joined hands, garudas gripping nagas, crouched lions in rows, and curling bird-and-foliage designs filled the panels. Ten divine horses, white and pure as conch shell, were harnessed to it. The strong charioteer sat in front and drove them leaping forward. White umbrellas, jeweled screens, sunshades, curved trumpets, foreign trumpets, gongs, pipes, drums, and bronze bells sounded together. Horses neighed, the troops shouted, the earth rang, and dust darkened the air like smoke as the army hastened on.

When he reached the battlefield, the lord of the three worlds ordered the chariot halted beside his younger brother's chariot, with the monkey army gathered around.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line, bow in hand, saw mighty Phra Chakrit arrive and rejoiced. He bowed his head and reported to the radiant royal lord: "That base Hanuman has now committed treason. He has gone back to join Thotsaphak, swaggering in vile harshness. He came out and fought up to the chariot; the monkeys all broke under his hand. Then he spoke insulting words before the feet of Phra Narai the creator. Garuda-bearing lord, please end his life."

Then wise, brave Phra Chakri heard his younger brother's report and smiled. He said to Phra Lak, "Beloved younger brother, sharer of my life, I will watch his behavior and see it plainly with my own eyes. Will Hanuman assault us as he did yesterday? If he has truly become treasonous and false, I will kill him by my power."

Then Hanuman, splendid monkey, was in the jeweled palace with Queen Suwannakanyuma. After great pleasure and delight, when the sun brightened the sky, he bathed, dressed in splendid ornaments, and went up to attend the kumbhanda king.

Then Thotsakan of the solar line saw fierce Hanuman and was overjoyed. He took the monkey lord by the hand, led him to the jeweled dais, and greeted him: "You of quick wisdom and power, like the heart of your father, yesterday you went out and fought the army. You drove them hard and returned weary. Rest for a while and be happy in comfort. The human brothers Rama and Lak will surely lose their lives by your victorious hand, and the demon city will rejoice."

Then victorious Hanuman heard the asura king and was silent, thinking inwardly: "If I stay many days, the mighty lord will blame me, saying I came to serve too slowly. I will trick this wretched Thotsakan into going out so the lord may strike and destroy him." Having thought this, he answered the kumbhanda who had tried to stop him: "All this comes from Your Majesty's compassion; that goodness has no end. A war of this size is not difficult. Why delay and let it drag on? The two human brothers are as if already in my hand. Today, I ask my father to raise the army and preside. I alone will strike their troops to ruin by my brave strength, seize arrogant Phra Lak and Phra Rama, and present them at my father's lotus feet."

Then Thao Raphanasura, skilled in war, heard the monkey's words as if the mountain had gained sixteen treasures. His ten mouths smiled and laughed, his ten faces like haloed moons. He ordered the ministers of rank to prepare the chariots and the tenfold host.

Then Paowanasura the yaksha bowed his head to receive the order of the lord of Lanka, took leave, and came out of the royal hall.

He mustered four divisions of soldiers skilled in war, fierce and firm. Elephant commanders rode battle elephants, holding goads upright in their hands. Horse commanders rode high-bred horses, deadly and powerful as lions, wielding spears while driving swift as the wind of time. Chariot commanders rode golden chariots, gripping bows and showing courage. Generals reviewed the demon troops, all joyful and fierce. They carried glaives, pikes, spears, swords, and fire-guns in crowded ranks, brandishing their battle power until the ground was filled.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha, as the auspicious hour drew near, came to bathe in the waters.

Golden lotuses fell like rain. He anointed himself with fragrant pollen-scented perfume, put on curling-edged trousers, and a garment patterned with kinnara figures. His side panels and hanging ends were coiled designs; a shining emerald cuirass, golden-green tunic, chest belt, and jeweled sacred chain adorned him. Directional plates, a diamond breast-jewel, rings in jeweled settings, the great crown with flower ornaments, armlets, emerald ear-guards, and moving jewels shone. In his twenty hands he grasped divine weapons, the full equipment of victorious war, bows and arrows complete. Like fierce Wetsuwan, he moved his hands and came to the jeweled platform.

He ordered fierce Hanuman to raise the army as the vanguard. They came out from victorious Lanka, and the asura king mounted his chariot.

O jeweled chariot, with wheels and spokes all of emerald, its yoke and crossbar arched in lovely curves. A jeweled throne with patterned panels and a shrine of cut gems displayed its images. Sheathed pillars, glass panels, and curling ornaments stood on all four sides, making it look like a palace in Indra's city. Four thousand charioteers were harnessed with it, and Lothan held the bow. They pressed forward, swift as garudas in flight; high insignia screened the shining sun. Gongs and drums roared; the army flowed like unbroken waves. Shouts rang out, three-tailed flags waved, and the troops hurried on.

Then fierce Hanuman, the great soldier, came near the battlefield as the vanguard and thought quickly: "Today I will deceive Thotsakan and make him ashamed before the gods in every direction. Let the whole asura army see what this base one deserves." Having thought this, he halted the fourfold army, got down from the jeweled chariot, and went to the asura king amid the kumbhandas.

He reported: "Mighty lord, do not yet advance the troops. Let the whole army set its battle order and hold firm. I will recite powerful spells, enter near the enemy by my own bodily strength, seize the two mighty humans, and bind them both. If you see me fly up three yojanas and leap alone in the middle of the sky, then let my powerful father hurry the chariots and troops in at once. Do not delay; I will hand Phra Lak and Phra Rama over to you so they may be killed, and the war will end today."
