Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Hanuman receiving Thotsakan's heart from Angkhot and presenting it to Rama, openly taunting Thotsakan with the soul-stone, Thotsakan returning to Lanka for his farewell to Montho and the palace women, the frightened demon army being mustered, and Rama preparing the Garuda battle formation for the next fight.

Translation

Thotsakan Takes Leave of Lanka

Then Hanuman, skilled in power and holy accomplishment, when he had finished ordering the yaksha lord, turned his face toward the army.

He lifted his hands in homage to the radiant self-born lord and stood firm, keeping all his senses restrained. The monkey lord hid his body. In a moment both body and shadow vanished, no longer appearing to the yakshas. By the force of monkey power he flew up to the clouds.

Then Angkhot, battle-skilled monkey, saw the mighty son of Phra Phai in the sky and rejoiced. He took the stone he had buried, the stone that held the yaksha's heart, and flew swiftly through the heavens to fierce Hanuman.

Then the brave and mighty son of the Wind saw the nephew of Thao Makhawan and was pleased, for his thought had been fulfilled. He said, "This time Thotsakan will meet the fate written by Brahma. We will go wait upon the mighty lord and present the asura's soul."

Having spoken, the two soldiers flew through the air, breaking through mist and cloud-petals, straight to the place where the army was encamped.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of radiant Phra Narai, lord of kings. Hanuman presented the asura's heart and reported to the lord of the three worlds: "I deceived Thotsaphak and the great ascetic, and so obtained this soul. It was terribly difficult labor, greater than any command I have served before."

Then the lord of the three worlds heard Hanuman's report and saw the soul of ten-faced Thotsakan. Delight and ease filled the discus-bearing lord's heart as if he had gained lovely Sida and set her upon Phra Chakri's lap. He said to his younger brother, "You sent my jewel-eyed messengers to tell me that mighty Hanuman had done treason, gone back to join Thotsaphak, struck our troops until all broke, pressed even up to you, and acted with great vile harshness. Now he has brought the heart. What do you think of this, younger brother? You make war too lightly, without careful reflection."

Then radiant Phra Lak heard Phra Chakri's command, raised his hands, and answered: "Hanuman's tricks and stratagems, by which he devised and deceived the yakshas, are too deep to count. One might count the stars in the sky, or sound the streaming ocean by strength and wisdom, and measure them as one wished. But to sound the wisdom of the son of the Wind is beyond what your beloved younger brother can do. His tactics, timing, and intelligence are beyond measure."

Then the lord of the three worlds said to his younger brother, "Mighty Hanuman is straight, loyal, and devoted beyond comparison. Even if one wanted the moon, the stars, or the dawn, he could gain them as he wished without difficulty. Hanuman is like a jeweled general, not to be found in all the three worlds. He was born with us to destroy the yaksha host; our enemies are beaten by his power."

Then fierce Hanuman, brave soldier, reported to Phra Chakra: "Now I have deceived Thotsakan into raising all his troops and setting them at the edge of the forest. I told him I would seize the righteous lord and bring you to his victorious army. The ten-headed demon lord does not understand the trick. If he sees me return, he will order the army to follow. I ask leave from Your Majesty's feet to go mock the yaksha lord harshly and make him ashamed before the gods. If he comes in to fight, let Your Majesty shoot the Brahmastra to kill the deluded asura. I will crush his heart and end his life at once."

Having spoken, he bowed at the lotus feet of radiant Phra Harirak, took the asura's heart, and flew up into the sky.

Then Thao Thotsakan, skilled in war, saw mighty Hanuman traveling in the clouds. Not knowing the monkey lord's trick, the asura rejoiced greatly as if he had gained a heaven. All ten mouths laughed aloud; heaven and earth shook. He clapped his hands thunderously and urged the army forward.

He cried out, "Hey, Hanuman! Why have you taken so long? Hurry and send Phra Lak and Phra Rama to your father now."

Then victorious Hanuman saw the ten-faced asura driving the army near the battlefield and close to bow-bearing Phra Chakra. By his fierce power he descended from the sky.

He stood across the road, displaying power and blocking the way. He arched his brows, winked, bared his teeth, encouraged the kumbhandas, and shouted: "Hey, what is this in here? Does the yaksha still know or not? Look closely and understand. Tell me quickly what this is."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king saw the stone. The demon lord was stricken with terror; his breast shook, his spirit fled, and he lost all composure. His face turned pale at once, as if he would die while still alive. He cried, "Look, Hanuman. You have created suffering and sin. I cared for you and kept you in peace as my adopted son, beloved above all. You are mighty, sharp in mind and wisdom; merit and sin, benefit and harm, all these things are plain to you. Is it fitting to be ungrateful, with no knowledge of kindness? I was honest and trusted you, giving vast wealth and beautiful women for delight. Have pity on your father, Hanuman. I beg for the soul of your father. Give it to me and gain merit; that goodness will remain in the future. Do not let me suffer and lose my life this time."

Then victorious Hanuman heard him and replied: "Hey, Thotsakan the asura. You are false, darkened in every way by delusion. You did not remain in the ten royal virtues, and so disaster has arisen. Your solar-line clan has perished. Who caused the deed that brought this ruin? Since you have done wrong from long ago, calamity has come about. The four-armed lord, whose power and radiance surpass the sky, did not lack wealth and therefore raise an army to seize the possessions, splendor, and followers of the yakshas. He came because you wickedly stole lovely Sida and kept her in your city. The four-armed lord raised the army according to your cruelty, yaksha lord. To say I deceived you is wrong. If you return Lady Sida, I will return the yaksha's heart. If you do not return the lovely one, I will not return the asura's heart."

Then the ten-faced yaksha heard as if struck by a thunderbolt and found no way to twist the speech aside. He said, "Look, Hanuman. What you say is very right. I did not remain in truth; I stole Sida and kept her. It happened because fate written by Brahma had come, and so I could not restrain my mind. Now I know I will die, but I will leave honor in the world. Let all three worlds know that I fought to the death for love. As for lovely Lady Sida, do not suspect that I will return her. If I cannot enjoy her in this life, I ask to gain her in a future birth, never apart from love of beautiful Sida. But let me not be like you, a wicked traitor without end, deceiving until this father must die. When will you lose your evil pride? I raised you as my beloved son, yet you know no gratitude. As for the crown, necklaces, and splendid chains, send them back to me now."

Then victorious Hanuman heard and replied, "Why speak so, yaksha lord? You are shameless in your delusion, not embarrassed before the gods of all three worlds. You look like a foul man, ugly in every way. The custom of warriors is to gain victory by whatever means. How can you accuse me of deception? It is the old way of war strategy. If you demand back what was already given, that is your deception of me. Your words are like a foolish child, with no truth in speech. As for the jeweled crown, earrings, and chains of the yaksha, I do not care for them. Asura, take them back." Speaking so, he stripped off the ornaments, breast-jewel and crown, and threw them down. Then he mocked and jeered, pointing to the kumbhanda's heart, rolling it over his palm, baring his fangs, winking, and laughing as if he would toss the heart into Thotsakan's hands.

Then the ten-headed king, skilled in war, saw the monkey's behavior and his heart burned like poison-fire. He cried, "Hanuman, you act wickedly, not honestly toward a friend, thinking only of lies and trickery. Even if I do not regain my heart, I know that this body will die. It is the nature of creatures born into the world not to escape death. Even Mount Sumeru, highest crown of all worlds, when touched by the dangerous fire of the kalpa, must be destroyed. I, who have power and have subdued all heaven, who am great in the three realms, why should I fear death? But I will return to Lanka first, take leave of the beautiful women and Lady Montho, and tomorrow I will march out again." Having spoken, he commanded Lothan the demon to turn the sky-bright jeweled chariot and withdraw the army into the victorious city.

Then fierce Hanuman, great soldier, saw Thotsakan turn back into the mighty city and returned to attend Phra Chakri.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of radiant Phra Narai, lord of kings, and reported the exchange with the asura. "Now Thao Thotsakan has withdrawn the army into the city. He will go take leave of Montho, his dear wife, and all the women attendants. Tomorrow the kumbhanda will march out."

Then Phra Chakrit, whose power is famed in every direction, heard the mighty son of Phra Phai and rejoiced. He ordered the great Wetchayan chariot to return. The troops shouted in uproar; the sound shook the earth as the lord returned to the pavilion.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha, traveling along the road, was shaken and cast down. "Alas for me! I did not even know as much as a monkey. My rank and honor are lost in every way because I was deluded by Hanuman's trick. He has made clever deceptions many times over a long while, meaning to destroy me. Or perhaps fate made me listen to an enemy. All this is because karma has led me to what Brahma wrote." His heart burned like poison-fire; he was stunned in thought until he entered Lanka.

When he arrived, he stopped at the jeweled platform and descended from the royal chariot. His whole body was stiff, and he hardly wished to walk.

Then Montho, finest in delight, and all the lovely women attendants looked and did not see Thotsakan's heads, nor all his arms on left and right. The women were startled and trembling, as if their lives would end, and they hurried out in confusion to receive him.

When they came near, they saw his full body with all ornaments complete. They bowed their heads in reverence and received him. Some women took him by the hands as he walked; some surrounded him on left and right; some supported the asura king up into the great victory palace.

When they arrived, the lovely women helped remove his royal garments. Some rubbed him with perfume; some brought fans and waved them. Some came to attend him and knead the yaksha's hands and feet. Every woman of the inner palace had tears gathered in her eyes.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha saw lovely Montho and all the asura women, and his heart was deeply stricken. He looked at their faces and worried over them, full of regret and love cutting into his breast as if his life were failing. Thinking of separation and grief, he could not hold back tears. Royal tears covered his body, flowing like a thousand streams. He said, "Montho, my beloved, beautiful one, finest in delight, because I did not listen to you, it seems my fate has caught up with me. Whatever I think turns wrong; everything is dark with delusion. Since the karmic result requires us to part, what is wrong appears to me as right. Now Hanuman has turned treacherous and false from me. He deceived the sage Phra Khobut and took away my life. This time I will likely part from you, young beloved. My karma has come; I must die and must go far from you."

Then Montho, finest in love, heard her husband and felt as if her soul would break. She struck her breast with both hands, overwhelmed with sorrow and panic, as if her head had been cut from her body. The bright lady lamented: "O lord who rules the worlds, famed beyond every direction, how could you fail to know the enemy and come to such poor death? Your wife warned you before, but you did not listen at all. You saw wrong as right and made an enemy into a friend. You were honest with a person until you died by it, letting a bad monkey deceive you out of your heart." Lamenting so, she embraced his feet and pressed down her head, grieving almost to death.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha saw his beloved wife grieving, and the asura's heart was shaken. He slipped his arms around her, held her, and spoke: "Beloved, finest in delight, I have thought of taking you and lovely Sida, whom I love above all, and fleeing to the edge of the universe to escape this danger. Then shame arises in me before the powerful gods and asuras in all ten directions. If destruction has come, who can flee it? If I have no merit left, my jewel, beautiful one, then entrust yourself to Phiphek, my younger brother. Endure and restrain your heart strongly. Beloved, remember my words. I will die. I have returned to bid you farewell today. At dawn you must be separated from me; this night alone you will see my face. Tomorrow I will leave you."

Then young Montho, finest in delight, heard the lord's command and cried in lament: "O lord of the world, tomorrow take your dear wife with you, righteous Majesty, to fight the royal enemy. I do not ask to stay; I will die as companion to your lotus feet. That is better than living on with suffering beyond endurance. As for Phiphek, your younger brother, how can I entrust my body to him? How could I know how to look upon his face? My heart would be wounded forever. Your Majesty, stay for now. Use wisdom and delay; do not act rashly. Stay with your beloved wife for three days, and perhaps this danger will lessen. Hanuman is the root of this, like death come to burn and destroy, clinging to you like a shadow, hoping to take your life and soul. From today I will be full of sorrow; who will protect my head?" Lamenting so, she sobbed in longing and lay still at the demon king's feet.

Then the young women attendants, dear and lovely, saw Montho, beautiful young lady, crying and lamenting. Each was stricken with love and laid her face down, weeping. The noise rang in tumult throughout the asura's inner palace, like the wind at the end of the age blowing to destroy the world in every direction. Each woman shed tears and mourned aloud: "O crown of the world, powerful and famed beyond heaven, you cared for us in true kindness; your goodness is greater than sky and earth. From now on the demon city will be troubled and distressed. All asura groups will lose happiness and eat only tears. Where can we turn for refuge like our royal lord?" Lamenting so, the beautiful women grieved as if life were ending.

Then Thotsakan of the solar line grieved until sunrise. The kumbhanda stirred his pride and thought, "If I stay shrinking back and do not go out to fight, the three worlds will mock and revile me, saying that I, great in the three realms, fear the enemy. I must go out and oppose their power, even if my life ends." Having thought this, he walked out to the jeweled audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the throne, with ministers on left and right, and gave royal command to the minister Mahothon: "Quickly muster the fourfold soldiers. Choose only those skilled in war. I will march out to fight and oppose the royal enemy."

Then Mahothon, yaksha minister, received the command of the earth-bearing lord, raised his hands in homage, and came out.

He mustered the bold fourfold troops into a great battle order. The registrars holding the rolls were ordered to drive common soldiers into the army. When one group was gathered, another ran away. Account officers chased and seized them. Even when men tried to have their names removed, the officers would not accept it; they seized fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law instead. People were tied and bound together in confusion, beaten, dragged, and pulled without regard. Noise filled the whole city, and the troops were brought in according to the registers.

Then the asura yaksha troops looked miserable and spoke their troubles to one another: "This time our lord of the city will raise the army and go out to fight the forest monkeys. His excellent power seems finished, and there is no way we will escape with life. Hanuman has tricked the heart away from the holy ascetic. All of us soldiers will be dragged along and die completely by the shining arrows of glorious Phra Rama. How can we turn aside or escape? If we hide and do not go out, we fear the yaksha king's danger, punishment, beating, and even the killing of our siblings and kin. We must go out first, then try to manage later. When the armies clash, we will slip away and flee." None of the yaksha soldiers had any swagger left. Forced by necessity, they came into the asura's victorious army.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha, when the troops had been arranged, pondered: "I am of Brahma's lineage, famed in power in every direction. Today I will lose my life, but I will make my honor known as long as the kalpa, heaven, and earth endure, in all three worlds." Having thought this, he recited fierce spells, gathered his mind, and transformed his body.

In a moment he changed form and became radiant Thao Trinet, beautiful and delightful to the world, bringing joy to all who saw him. His skin was bright and lovely, his beauty surpassing all in the three worlds. Moving his hands with graceful face, the yaksha king came to bathe.

Jeweled lotuses showered down like rain. He wore sweet divine perfume. His trousers were set with divine gems; his garment had curling stem designs. The side-cloth was adorned with rubies, and the floating panel shone with divine gold. His robe was golden bright; three battle-chains floated over him. Directional plates, an emerald breast-jewel, a curled chest-belt, gold bracelets, jeweled armlets, and diamond rings glittered before the eyes. He wore the great nine-gem crown, shining ear-guards, hanging golden garlands, and in his right hand held the powerful sword. Like Thao Hatsanai, king of gods, beautiful and radiant, he stepped from the shining jeweled seat and went to his beloved wife.

When he reached the chief lady, he held her close, full of suffering and grief as if his breast were broken. Gazing into her face, the yaksha king sighed and spoke graciously: "Look, young beloved. I am going to die. Frail one, stay well. You will see my face only a moment; after this, when you turn, you will not see me. Rule the asura women and the beautiful attendants carefully. Whatever I have done wrong before in haste, do not let it become karmic hatred between us. City-spirit, show me mercy."

Then young Montho, finest in love, heard her husband and felt as if her life would end. She bowed at his lotus feet, struck her breast, and wept. Clutching his ankles, she lamented and pleaded: "Mighty Majesty, show mercy and stay first. Do not yet go out to fight. Royal lord, pause and think well. Send lovely Sida to radiant Phra Rama, and Your Majesty will keep your life. You will stay with your beloved wife, rule the attendant women, wealth, subjects, and kingdom, and remain protector and pillar of the solar-line yakshas."

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king heard his beloved wife and sat silent, stunned in thought. Tears poured along the channels of his eyes; grief blocked his heart. He said, "Companion of my life, I cannot think of begging the enemy. Creatures born in samsara cannot flee death. When karma requires life to end, beautiful one, how can you tell me to return Lady Sida? How would I know how to send her away, heart of my delight? It would be shameful and ugly before gods, sages, vidyadharas, and nagas. They would say I feared Rama and Lak, and the three worlds would all revile me. I am of Brahma's solar line; I cannot let the world despise me. I will fight to the death, not caring for life. I am a noble man; I have no attachment to living."

Having spoken, he moved in royal procession from the shining golden seat, moving his hands gracefully, and came to the splendid jeweled mounting platform.

Then young Montho, dear and lovely, and all the beautiful women attendants, nearly broken in heart, shed tears and wept in deep sorrow. They descended from the victory palace and followed him to the jeweled platform.

When they arrived, the lovely women embraced his feet on left and right, each grieving aloud as if they would lose all composure.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha saw Queen Montho and all the women attendants following and lamenting in love. The yaksha king could not hold back grief. Looking at their faces, sighing, he held them close and spoke: "All you beautiful women, we have lived in happiness and pleasure, but now I will die and part from those I love. Karma has come, and we must be separated; the pain is like a broken breast. Where will I return and see your faces again? Lovely ones, stay well. Guard and care for one another. Do not forget my words. O Queen Montho, I entrust the beautiful attendants to you, heart of my heart. Whatever wrong has happened, forgive it. Protect and care for them righteously, city-spirit, for my sake."

Then Lady Montho, beloved, and the beautiful women heard the lord's words. They beat their breasts, threw themselves down, rolled upon the ground, and wept, each lamenting out of love for the kumbhanda.

Montho said, "O mighty lord, your goodness is like that of a divine father. We have always relied on the cool shade of your feet as if beneath a jeweled parasol over our heads. Now you will leave your wife behind, without pity for the servant at your lotus feet. Afterward there will be only grief; even Your Majesty will not be spared."

The attendants said, "O lord above our heads, it breaks the heart that we must part from our crown. We used to serve your feet in happiness and pleasure; now we will be separated. Since the jeweled bodhi-shade will vanish like the moon going out and losing its light, the moon-palace will be cold, quiet, and lonely. Every minute will hold every kind of suffering."

Montho said, "O jeweled lamp, your radiance is going out. We who used to see the king will no longer see Your Majesty, and our grief will multiply forever. Take up your shining sword and kill your wife first; then raise the army and go out to fight the enemies."

The attendants said, "O royal crest, how can such a one be found again? How can you leave and abandon us to eat tears? Afterward there will be only trouble; it would be better if we died first." Lamenting so, each struck her breast and grieved almost to senselessness.

Then the ten-headed solar-line yaksha saw the wife who shared his life and the attendant women lamenting, and his heart was caught in concern. The yaksha king hardly wished to leave. Love crowded and bound his heart like arrows driven into his body. Looking at young Montho's face and at the women on left and right, with tears gathered in his eyes, he spoke gently: "Quiet this separation. Do not grieve so deeply, beloved. Guard and care for one another with lasting steadiness. Lovely ones, stay in welfare."

When he had finished the farewell, he went in splendid procession, beautiful as Thao Kosi, and mounted the shining jeweled chariot. The hundred-thousand brave soldiers surrounded him.

When he came outside the palace, he looked left and right, gazing at the city, delightful as a heaven. He regretted the great palace, shining like a moonlit mansion, all three jewels gleaming bright, where he had long lived in happiness. Now he would look on it for the last time: the jeweled palace, the golden halls, the singing women whose voices stirred longing, the pleasures he had enjoyed in every hour. Seeing the palace of Montho, his beloved wife, the yaksha king sighed deeply. The more he thought, the more longing filled him; this time he truly had to go far away. "My heart, every kind of parting has come. I must leave my beloved wife like the sun setting behind the mountain. Where will I see her face again? I regret the lovely women, all young and beloved. From today they will be lost to my sight. Thinking of it is pitiful. When he reached the garden, he saw the shining trees, flowering, fruiting, and leafing, where he had always played with the attendants in supreme happiness, delightful as a heavenly garden. All this will pass from my sight night after night. I regret lovely Sida, her face bright as the moon, her beauty pleasing a man's heart, who has lived happily here. I must leave both the flower garden and beautiful Sida. I long to go enjoy the queen today until my heart is full." Then he felt shame before the gods, sages, and gandharvas, who would blame him and say he had deliberately turned aside because he did not wish to face the enemy. "O Lanka, from now on you will vanish from my sight and lose all splendor. You were more delightful than Indra's city, a place where the three worlds gathered. Now you will be under human power and the end of joy will come. Misfortune will come every night and day, and every kind of trouble." The more he thought, the more he grieved, as if arrows pierced his breast. He was desolate at heart, as if he had no soldiers, as if the demon king had come alone, and his heart was chilled. The asura troops had no joy; the banners and victory flags did not wave. An owl flew across the chariot's curve; the shout sounded like ghosts. A meteor fell in the middle of the army, and the ground flamed. Trees along the road stood rigid, their leaves unmoving; blossoms and fruit disappeared, and birds did not sing. The great victory chariot made no thunder of wheels; the lions drooped without pride. Thunder sounded, clouds darkened the sun, and every sign was strange. The asura king grew more heartsick, forced himself, and hurried the army along the forest road.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set the battle formation by divisions and companies, inspecting them as they waited to fight the enemy.

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds lay upon the shining seat in the golden pavilion, thinking about the war. The garuda-bearing lord rejoiced greatly, for he had Thotsakan's asura heart in his hand. When the last part of night had passed, the sun shone bright, stars and moon faded from the sky, and birds flew out seeking one another. The pleasant sound of cicadas, karawik birds, and crystal roosters rang as if deliberately offering victory to the righteous lord, their voices loud and heart-piercing.

He bathed and dressed, shining like the moon, took the mighty Brahmastra weapon, and came out of the golden pavilion.

With the eighteen crowned monkey chiefs, fierce soldiers at left and right, and the Chomphu and Khitkhin troops crowded before his feet with raised hands, he gave royal command to the battle-skilled son of the Sun: "Prepare the monkey army. We will go fight Thotsakan."

Then diligent Lord Sukhrip received the command of the garuda-bearing lord, bowed in homage, and came out.

He arranged a great Garuda battle formation. Nilrat was the bird's head; Keyuramaryu were the two eyes; Pingkhala was the beak. The monkey lord Nilakhan was the neck of the Garuda bird; Minister Nilnon formed the right wing, and the monkey Thavi Phat the left. Wanon Surasen and Surakan formed the two feet standing ready to leap. The garuda-bearing lord was the body of the jeweled Garuda, and Mahatthawikan was the tail. The elder brother wore divine cloth with swan-vines; Phra Lak wore god-given garments. Side panels and floating panels shone. Their robes were light, patterned, and cut with round designs. Directional plates, jeweled waist ornaments, emerald chains, and rubies glittered; divine gems adorned their breast-jewels, and armlets and bracelets flashed. Amarin's rings were set with diamonds. Their nine-gem crowns shone, with hanging golden earrings and bright ear-guards. Beautiful and graceful, the two lords each bore the sacred bow and shining sword. With the monkey chiefs of the solar line, they went to mount the adorned chariot.

O palace-chariot: its wheels shone with crystal and coral radiance, its golden hubs and delicate yoke were graceful and floating. The throne was worked with pictured lines, curling ornaments, garudas gripping hanging nagas, and a jeweled busabok shrine with golden finials. Ten divine horses were harnessed, proud beyond royal lions, leaping and moving by power, while the charioteer drove swiftly like the wind of time. Phra Lak sat with joined hands. High regalia, parasols, and banners lined the way. The sound of drums covered the bronze gongs; brave troops shouted in tumult. Wheels rolled with deep thunder, uproar rang through the forest, flags waved, and the vanguard led the royal procession.
