Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the seventy-ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows the final battle in which Rama kills Thotsakan, Hanuman crushes the hidden soul, Phiphek laments and receives custody of Lanka, the queens mourn the body, and Sida is prepared for her return to Rama while Sammanakkha follows the procession in fear.

Translation

The Fall of Thotsakan

Then Thao Thotsaphak, skilled in battle, saw Phra Rama raise the monkey army and come out to fight him. His heart trembled with dread like a tiger seeing the lordly lion. The hair of his body and crown stood on end, and he almost fell from the seat of his chariot. Forcing his courage, he commanded the captains to wave the signal flags as the appointed sign: break into the monkeys without holding back, and kill the whole victorious army.

Then Mahothon, the chief minister, received the command of the ruler of the three worlds and drove the great army forward into battle.

Then the yaksha hosts had no heart for fighting, for they feared the monkeys' power. When their officers drove them on, they had to go. Some fled into the forest and hid. Some ran this way and that and lay down inside the frames of dead elephants. Some demons pretended to be fierce, brandishing weapons while their bodies shook; they rushed as if turning into the fight, clenched their teeth once, and ran away. Some transformed into birds and flew straight into the deep woods. Some roared from far off, but when the monkeys came near they fled from the power. They broke apart everywhere; the common soldiers would not hold ranks. They ran wildly in all directions as if life itself were leaving their bodies.

Then the monkey troops saw the yakshas fleeing in confusion, soldiers and officers alike without sense. All the brave monkeys shouted until the world shook and thundered. Each one rushed out to fight, chasing and striking down the kumbhanda host.

Heads were cut off, feet cut off, bodies cut apart. Corpses lay scattered everywhere, heaped and crushed together like a sal forest struck by the wind at the destruction of the age.

Then the twenty-armed lord, brave of heart, saw the monkeys drive in and kill his demon troops until the whole army broke. Only Lothan the charioteer remained, unable to flee because he was driving the jeweled chariot. Left with just the two of them, Thotsakan was hard pressed, and ordered the chariot driven in to chase the monkeys.

He struck left and right in a wild tumult, with fierce power and battle skill. Alone, without yielding, he pressed and battered into the fight.

Then the shining monkey army broke and drew back, unable to withstand his power, until they came before Phra Chakra's chariot.

Then Thao Thotsaphak the yaksha aimed at Phra Lak and Phra Rama, took up his bow, and loosed an arrow.

The omen appeared strange and altered. There was no lion-roar at all. Instead popped rice and flowers fell before the royal chariot. When the yaksha lord saw the sign turn wrong, he stood stunned, his hair bristling, every limb trembling. His grief and dread grew beyond measure.

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai who bears the discus, saw the ten-headed yaksha lord. The beauty of his face and form was lovely beyond telling. His shape, complexion, and bearing were more beautiful than the lord of the Trayastrimsa heaven. His bright radiance shone like the moon free of clouds and stain, moving through the zodiac in a divine golden palace. The powerful lord gazed at the asura's form and could not turn away. He had drawn the victorious Brahmastra arrow, set it on the string, and lifted the bow, but wonder confused his soul, and the king did not shoot it into battle.

Then Phra Lak of the solar line, bearer of the bow, with the eighteen crowned monkey chiefs and the assembled army, saw the ten-headed kumbhanda's form, more beautiful than all divine radiance. His complexion shone through all his limbs, and every monkey was entranced. Some said, "How strange this beauty is. We have seen forms in every place, but no form on earth has ever surpassed this one. Is this supreme Brahma, or has Phra Isuan changed his shape? O heart, all three worlds should praise such a sight. We have never seen anything like it before. Or is it the moon or the sun, deliberately making this apparition? Or has a Dusit heaven-god descended to the earth?" Each one stared, amazed at the yaksha's form, no longer guarding his senses. The monkeys were bewildered and lost in wonder.

Then Hanuman, who had clear understanding, saw the lord of the three worlds entranced by Thotsakan's form. The bow was drawn and the shining arrow set, pulled tight and aimed, yet not released. Hanuman's heart burned as if someone had struck him. He bowed and reported: "Why, mighty lord, have you become lost in gazing at a yaksha's form? This goes against the thought you held when you came to destroy the enemy. Ancient words warn us not to be deceived by the four snares: form, taste, speech, and music. Your Majesty is wise, vast, and supreme in the three worlds. How can you be bewildered by a yaksha's body, staring straight at him and unable to turn your eyes away? I, your servant, think this is like the time of Intharachit, when we were all deceived by a demon illusion and the low asura gained advantage. Let Your Majesty shoot the Brahmastra to kill him and end his body. Then the war against the demons will be finished. Please show mercy, lord of the sky."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, radiant in glory, heard the son of Phra Phai speak, and the king came back to himself. He said, "Look, Hanuman. What you say is very right. I have killed asuras until the earth is piled with bodies. Yet even the most beautiful forms in the three realms cannot be compared with this one. It is truly beautiful beyond any golden image, bright and pure. If I, a man, see him and am affected like this, what would happen if women saw him? Their hearts would break with desire, lost in the form of the kumbhanda." Having spoken, the lord of the three worlds drew the created Brahmastra arrow, fierce as the fire at the end of the age, and loosed it with power.

It cracked and cracked like thunder, roaring through the ten directions. It struck Thotsakan the asura in the chest, and he fell from the splendid chariot. The elephant tusk that had been fixed there snapped and flew away in two pieces. He returned to ten faces and twenty arms and lay fallen on the earth.

Then the ten-headed solar-line lord, brave of heart, struck by the arrow and near death, glanced and saw his younger brother. His anger was boundless; then, remembering love, his heart failed. He slowly steadied his mind and body and began to speak in lament.

One mouth said, "O Phiphek, why have you deliberately killed your elder brother? I will lose my life now by this poisoned arrow."

A second mouth said, "You are my younger brother, born of the same womb and bloodline. You will rule Lanka as you wished and become sovereign over the demon host."

A third mouth said, "I entrust Montho to you. Care for her well and steadily, and also young lovely Akki and all the palace women and attendants."

A fourth mouth said, "When you hold royal dignity and appear as the lord of power, show compassion to the solar-line clan and rule by righteous custom."

A fifth mouth said, "Uphold the ten royal virtues. Do not act wrongly as I did. Cut off greed; be generous and kind to soldiers, subjects, and all people."

A sixth mouth said, "Forgive the anger and abuse I spoke before. Do not let it become hatred and clinging toward me as I go to the heavenly city."

A seventh mouth said, "I entrust the royal city to you, city of the line of glorious Brahma, handed down from our grandfather. Guard it with mercy and do not let it fall into disorder."

An eighth mouth said, "I raised you with hope that some good would come of it. I myself was wicked and so have lost my life, bringing heat and torment on the whole world."

A ninth mouth said, "I am taking leave to die. Younger brother, show mercy and perform my funeral. Do not let my body remain overnight on the battlefield, or the three worlds will despise and mock me."

When the ten mouths had finished entrusting and commanding, the yaksha's strength and thought were spent. The poison of the arrow burned through his body, and the asura rolled and writhed on the ground.

Then mighty Hanuman, great soldier, when Thotsakan had been struck by the victorious arrow and fallen on the surface of the earth, crushed the demon lord's soul in his hand until it was broken and ground fine. Thotsakan's spirit vanished completely, and the yaksha lost his life.

Now I will tell of all the gods of every order: supreme Brahma in his power, Thao Trinet, Wetsuwan, Wirunhok of holy accomplishment, Wirupak, Thottharot the creator, siddhas, vidyadharas, gandharvas, and apsaras in every heaven. Seeing Phra Narai incarnate kill the ten-faced yaksha, the thorn that oppressed the worlds, and seeing his life ended by divine power, they all rejoiced. They leaned from windows and clapped their hands in tumult. Some showered divine golden flowers, spreading fragrance everywhere. Some sang and joined the music of strings and piphat in every aerial palace and mountain height, praising and blessing the four-armed lord who rides Garuda. The sound boomed and rang, shaking earth and ocean, reaching even to Kalakni Rudra, and the whole universe was in uproar.

Then Phra Chakri, brave in wisdom, having finished subduing the demon lord and ended his life with the powerful arrow, watched as gods and heavenly women showered divine flowers and cried blessings in a loud commotion that filled sky and earth. The lord took the golden blossoms, admired them, and breathed their sweet pollen. His spirit was deeply at ease. Then the king asked Phiphek: "This lord of Lanka, what did he first intend? Why did he take a form like Thao Hatsanai and then change back into Thotsaphak? And the elephant tusk fixed in his chest, from what time was it there? I did not know of it. Only when the arrow struck down the yaksha lord did it break loose today."

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord heard Phra Chakri's question, bowed with joined hands, and answered: "Thotsaphak deliberately changed his shape to resemble the lord of Trayastrimsa heaven because he knew he would die and wanted his glory to be remembered. His form changed back as before because the arrow struck him and left him senseless; when his power and strength were gone, he returned to his asura nature. The elephant tusk fixed in his chest has been there since the asura seized the jeweled Pushpaka of his elder brother named Kuperan. His elder brother fled from him to take refuge at the feet of Phra Isuan, lord of the world. The ten-headed one pursued him, meaning to kill him, until he reached that righteous lord. Just then Phra Isuan mounted his elephant throne and recited sacred Veda spells. In wrath he pulled out the elephant's tusk and hurled it. It struck the twenty-armed lord in the chest. When Thotsakan tried to draw it out, it would not come free. Phra Isuan cursed it to remain fixed there until the yaksha lord's death. The asura fled back to the demon city and considered every means, but it would not loosen or break. He had Phra Wetsukam care for it, sawing it flush with the flesh. Then he covered it with ornaments so completely that no one could see it. Today his life has ended, and so the tusk flew away from his body."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, radiant in glory, heard Phiphek the asura tell the whole story from the beginning. He gave royal command to the yaksha astrologer: "This Thotsaphak the asura was exceedingly vile. He oppressed humans, gods, siddhas, and gandharvas throughout the three worlds. Even against his own elder brother he dared to act so violently. He violated the nature of a solar-line king and the race of glorious Brahma. He was a thorn piercing the earth, and it was right that his life should end. As for the yaksha's corpse, let the asura decide what should be done." Having given this order, he turned back the divine chariot, like Thao Makhawan among the gods. Victorious over the asura realm, he ordered the strong battle troops to stand down and returned to the Wetchayan pavilion amid great shouting and uproar.

Then Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas saw his elder brother's body, life ended and breath gone, rolling on the ground. The asura felt pity. Tears poured from his eyes like streams, and the demon lord embraced his brother's feet and lamented.

"O crown-lord of the world, whose fame spread over all heaven, whose power was known like the fire of the age, before whom gods feared and trembled. Among the solar line of Brahma, descended from our glorious father, none of all the mighty ones was like my elder brother Thotsaphak. You knew every royal art needed to uphold a kingdom. How could you die in such misery, like a base and foolish man? It happened because Your Majesty was deluded by the words of Sammanakkha and listened to her. So you lost yourself, lost royal power, lost the solar line of Brahma, lost Lanka the kingdom, and lost all the brave yaksha armies. It came from your pride and self-will against the powerful avatar. When your younger brother interpreted bad dreams and warned you, you would not listen at all. In anger you drove me from the victorious city, and so I was far from your feet. I took refuge beneath the feet of the jeweled discus-bearing lord. I did not bind revenge as one binds an enmity, nor did I contrive to kill my elder brother and force him to die. This is shameful before all three worlds. What a waste of the greatest of men, that the whole lineage should be ruined together. Alas, from now on you vanish from sight, like the moon extinguished and all its radiance gone." As he spoke and wept in grief, the kumbhanda nearly lost consciousness.

Then Mahothon the yaksha and Saran the asura messenger, who had been hiding at the forest edge, saw Phiphek embrace his elder brother's feet and weep. They brought the surviving troops and came before the asura lord.

When they arrived and bowed at his lotus feet, Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas and the two demons gazed at the corpse of the lord of Lanka and lamented in grief.

Then Phiphek the yaksha lord, when his mind had come back to itself, saw the two asuras come weeping. He commanded Mahothon the minister and Saran, who had good understanding: "You two must hurry into the city of Lanka. Tell Queen Montho and lovely Lady Akki that the twenty-armed lord has ended his life. Let the ladies come receive the royal body of the world-crowned king and bring it into the palace of sandalwood at once."

Then Mahothon and Saran the yakshas received the command, paid homage with joined hands, and hurried into the city of Lanka.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of the two beloved chief queens and reported: "The royal husband, lord of the sky, has gone to heaven. Phiphek the yaksha king is there grieving and weeping. He has sent us to tell Your Graces to come out and receive the demon king's body."

Then young Lady Montho, lovely and full of feeling, together with tender young Akki, heard the two demon lords lamenting that the royal husband had lost his life. They were startled as if someone had struck them and cut off their royal heads. Their faces went pale and drained. They beat their breasts and wept, then fell senseless, unconscious and still.

Then the young women attendants, the elder women, the chaperones, and the eunuchs saw the two lovely queens stunned with unbearable grief. Each trembled in alarm. Some came to help knead and press the ladies' hands and feet. Some brought fans and fanned them; some held smelling medicine at their noses. Some brought royal perfume and anointed both ladies. Some comforted and roused them with gentle, sweet words. All the palace attendants were in turmoil.

Then the two chief queens, touched by fragrant water and hearing the voices of the women around them, slowly drew breath through their noses and revived. The ladies rose from the shining jeweled chamber and went to the splendid mounting platform.

They mounted the golden palanquin. The demon escort went in front, and the company of women attendants walked after the queens.

When they reached the battlefield, the two chief royal queens descended from the shining palanquin and went in together.

They crossed through the bodies of asura soldiers, scattered everywhere beyond counting, and saw their powerful husband fallen on the surface of the earth. The arrow had pierced through his chest and soul; his bodily life was completely ended. The two ladies went straight to their husband's lotus feet. Montho embraced the right ankle of the yaksha king, and beautiful Kala Akki embraced his left. Burning and overwhelmed with grief, pierced by separation and heart-sorrow as if life itself would perish, the radiant women lamented and wept.

Lady Montho said, "O mighty lord, incomparable in all ten directions, how could you go to heaven and flee across the sky to Dusit, leaving your servant behind in trouble, parted from the shelter of your blessed feet? From now on, living after you, I will know only grief, multiplied by sorrow at every hour."

Lady Akki said, "O lord of the world, whose power was famed in every direction, all six heavenly levels and the whole earth feared your might. Your age reached thirty million years, and no enemy dared despise you. Even Mount Kailasa you lifted easily, my king."

Montho said, "With such power as this, how could you be defeated by the enemy so easily? In the shining solar line, my royal husband was greatest among men, together with elder Thapnasura, the supreme yaksha son of the Creator, Kumbhakan, and your son Intharachit; these five were more excellent than all three worlds. Even with the ocean as your moat, how could the enemy still come? They have slain your royal line to destruction. My heart is miserable beyond measure."

Lady Akki said, "It was because Your Majesty listened to the shameful Sammanakkha and gave up righteous custom that ruin arose throughout Lanka. A human with only two hands, holding only a strong bow and arrows, has been fit to destroy Your Majesty, immense as you were, with twenty arms left and right."

Montho said, "Your wife lamented and warned you before, but Your Majesty would not listen to my pleading words, and so you have gone to heaven. Alas, from now on you vanish from sight like the moon gone behind the mountain ridge." Speaking so, she rolled and writhed in grief, as if the lady's life were ending.

Then the women attendants on left and right beat their breasts and entered mourning, lamenting aloud: "O our royal lord, we never thought you would die. You bore power like the sun, and all three worlds feared your might. You raised and cared for us, your servants, with honest mercy. We knew happiness and cool shelter beyond imagining, as if beneath father and mother. If anything went wrong, Your Majesty only taught and corrected us. Your goodness is broader and deeper than the sea, with no burning stain in it. How could you abandon your servants and go to the radiant sky?" Speaking so, they rolled and grieved as if their lives would end.

Then the yaksha soldiers, men and women who had followed out, all mourned and wept. Some wandered through the battlefield, searching among the confusion for the bodies of relatives and friends. Tears bathed every face, and their suffering and sorrow multiplied. Some lamented for the yaksha king; some grieved for younger brothers, elder brothers, children, grandchildren, husbands, and kin who had perished. The sound rang in tumult. Not one person was steady. The army seemed about to die of grief and had lost all sense.

Then Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas saw the two chief queens and all the palace women overcome with suffering and grief as if they would die. Compassion rose in the kumbhanda's heart, and he spoke to comfort them: "Look, you two lovely ladies. It is not fitting to grieve so heavily. All who are born in the three worlds must perish, each and every one. This is not true only of the lord of Lanka, whose power subdued every place. Even Phra Isuan, mighty in battle, cannot escape death. Even great Brahma, father of all worlds, when his time comes, is endangered and destroyed in life like the rest. The whole earth, the four oceans, Mount Sumeru high above heaven, the Cakkrawan and Sattaphan mountain ranges - when the destruction of the kalpa comes, none can remain standing; all is ground fine in every direction. This is the ordinary law of the three worlds. Think deeply on impermanence. Do not suffer in separation and grief. Bring wisdom in to break it, so that we may invite the yaksha king's body away. Lovely ladies, listen to my words."

Then the two chief royal queens heard Phiphek the asura. Their grief eased a little, and they said, "As for the royal funeral of the world-crowned lord, let it be according to you, his younger brother, who will rule the city of Lanka."

Then Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas heard the two chief queens and commanded Mahothon the asura: "Hurry and prepare the victory chariot and the bright emerald jeweled urn, so that we may carry the body of the twenty-armed lord into the city of Lanka."

Then Mahothon the yaksha minister received the command of the royal younger brother, bowed in farewell, and hurried away.

When he arrived, he ordered all officers, small and great, to make ready. They brought the shining jeweled urn and placed it on the royal victory chariot. All high regalia, conches, and trumpets were complete. The soldiers appointed for the escort all assembled. The procession was arranged and inspected in ranks, and they quickly walked out.

When they reached the battlefield near the body of the yaksha king, they halted the shining jeweled chariot and waited to hear Phiphek's command.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king had the body of his elder brother, lord of kings, placed inside the splendid jeweled urn and set above the glowing royal victory chariot. It was adorned with high regalia and yak-tail fans. The troops formed a dense escort. The musicians sounded gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches in a great roar. All the women of the inner palace followed the body in grief.

When they arrived at the jeweled landing, they brought the body of the yaksha king onto the royal golden jeweled seat and up into the shining great palace.

They placed it above a golden jeweled platform, adorned with bright jeweled umbrellas. Around the asura's urn the place of triumph blazed with light.

Then the ministers, brave soldiers, priests, physicians, elders, and all royal officials prostrated at the lotus feet of Phiphek of the solar line, filling the audience hall in a dense assembly.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king gave royal command to Mahothon the minister: "Prepare the jeweled busabok, shining and splendid, to bring beautiful Sida to wait upon Phra Chakri. Let lovely Lady Montho and beautiful Kala Akki, the chief royal queens of the asura lord of Lanka, Lady Chanthawadi, bright wife of Kumbhakan the yaksha, and Lady Suwannakanyuma, wife of Intharachit, accompany the lady to attend the lotus feet of Phra Chakkrit at the bright golden pavilion. Arrange it well and quickly. Then appoint asura and yaksha escorts for the chief queen's procession to wait upon Phra Chakri at the victorious golden pavilion."

Then Mahothon, chief minister, received the command quickly, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

He arranged troops to escort the royal palanquin, ranked neatly on left and right. One group wore blue shirts and patterned cloth with bordered hems. Another wore shirts with curling kanok designs and lifted patterned cloth shining bright. Another wore shirts striped with glittering gold and patterned red cloth. He also prepared the jeweled busabok, hung with velvet curtains of intertwining vinework, decorated with sprays and melon-shaped diamonds, and made ready in every detail.

Then he ordered the four palace women to go into the royal residence and report the asura's command to the four young ladies.

Then the four palace women, having heard the minister's words, hurried in.

When they arrived, they bowed low and reported to the four beloved chief ladies: "Now Phiphek the asura has ordered Your Graces to accompany the footsteps of the chief royal queen and wait upon Phra Narai incarnate at Emerald Mountain."

Then lovely Montho the queen and the four chief royal ladies heard the kumbhanda's command. They descended from the palace, shining bright with radiance, and with all the women attendants came to the terrace.

Then Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas seated Intharachit's two sons at the front of the shining busabok. They were beautiful like a divine golden palace of Thao Kosiy. When this was done, he led the troops out to the garden.

When they arrived, he halted the army and the pearl-bright victory busabok. Then he led the four lovely young ladies to wait upon Lady Sida's lotus feet.

Each bowed with joined hands at the feet of the beloved chief royal lady. Phiphek the asura king reported to the goddess: "I am a servant at the lotus feet of radiant Phra Narai. I am the younger brother of Thotsakan the asura, named Phiphek the kumbhanda. Now Phra Chakra and his glorious younger brother have destroyed the unrighteous asura host until the ground is strewn with the dead. Thao Thotsaphak, the yaksha lord, has also lost his life to the arrow. The four-armed lord longs for Your Grace. I invite my royal mother to go wait upon radiant Phra Narai at the bright victory pavilion on Emerald Mountain."

Then the beloved Lady Lakshmi heard the asura's words that Thotsakan had perished. Joy rose because her wish had been fulfilled, as if a poisoned dart had been pulled away. The burning misery and grief she had endured vanished at once. She spoke graciously: "Look, Phiphek the yaksha. My own life at this time must be under the force of karma from long ago. I was separated from the lotus feet of Phra Harirak, my lord, and suffered hardship and anguish as if fallen into the fire of time. I have burned with poison as if my bodily life would end, enduring grief for a long while, nearly fourteen years. Every day my heart has been wounded by the words of Thotsakan the yaksha. For a woman with a heart like mine, it is hard for anyone to see clearly. If I go to wait upon Phra Hariwong, he may think doubtful thoughts. I do not know what I can do to be free of suspicion and stain."

Then Phiphek the yaksha king bowed and answered her gracious speech: "This truth is clear to all of us. All siddhas, vidyadharas, gods, and kinnaras in heaven know it. Mother of the world, radiant and lovely, do not tremble or burn in heart. Among all women in the world, none can be compared with Your Grace. Natural gold that has endured the fire, even if it falls into the earth for ages beyond counting, should not be thought dim or stained. It becomes only brighter, shining and stainless like the wish-gem."

Then the beloved young Lady Lakshmi heard words that agreed with her spirit and felt great joy. "I will go bow at the lotus feet of Phra Hariwong who bears the discus. But since I fell into the demon city, I have suffered hardship for a long while, full of distress, and have not cleansed or bathed. Sweat and grime have mixed over me in misery, like a low common woman. It is not fitting for me to go near the feet of my radiant royal husband. I must purify my body and remove all stain from it."

Then the lord of Trayastrimsa learned that lovely Lady Sida was going to travel to wait upon glorious Phra Hariwong at great Emerald Mountain, and that the mother of heaven would now bathe her body. He gave divine royal command to beautiful Rambha and Arunawadi, two lovely heavenly women: "Bring the heavenly apsaras together with consecration bathing vessels and splendid ornaments, and go present them to Lady Sida. Then accompany the beloved lady as companions when she goes to wait upon Phra Chakra at the shining golden pavilion."

Then the two beautiful heavenly women received the command of Thao Hatsanai and prepared the jeweled ornaments and the royal bathing vessels needed for cleansing. They brought the lovely apsaras and descended from their heavenly palaces.

When they arrived, they went straight in and sat near the beloved chief queen. They said, "Lord Amarin has sent us to bring divine garments, perfumes, and waters for bathing the hair, to present them to the beloved chief queen. Bathe, adorn yourself, and go to wait upon the royal lord. Your servants and the heavenly women will accompany Your Grace. We invite the chief royal queen to purify her body in happiness."

Then young Lady Sida, lovely and full of feeling, heard that Thao Makhawan had bestowed divine things and sent heavenly apsaras. The lady was deeply delighted and spoke graciously: "His Majesty Hatsanai has shown mercy at this time; his goodness has no end." Having spoken, the lady went to bathe in the river.

She received the consecrating water over her head and hair, and the chief queen fastened up her hair. The heavenly goddesses helped cleanse the lady's body. Some offered fragrant water for her to wear and carefully powdered her bright face. Her garment was patterned with kinnari figures on a deep green ground with golden vinework. They placed chains and jeweled girdles upon her, then set necklaces crossing over her breasts. A golden breast-plate with makara coils, jeweled armlets, bracelets, and diamond rings shone bright. She placed on her finger the ring of the lord who rides Garuda, which the son of Vayu had brought to her. Her jeweled crown and shining ear ornaments made her beautiful like Lady Uma. When all was complete, she stepped from the seat, moving her hands with swanlike grace, and mounted the great busabok. All the women followed her.

O busabok, jeweled busabok, its radiance gleaming through the sky, with five high spires rising beyond the clouds and glittering roof finials. Yamaliwan and Kanyuwek, the two noble sons of Intharachit, held bright golden flowers and sat at the front of the busabok. Lovely Benchakai was paired with heavenly Suwannakanyuma. Beautiful Trichada was paired with Lady Chanthawadi. Lovely young Montho and beautiful Kala Akki sat beside the goddess, each according to her appointed place. The heavenly apsaras surrounded them on left and right; beyond them came the women attendants, bearing many ranked objects. The appointed asura escort was ready with trumpets, conches, and royal shade. Phiphek led the army, and the busabok moved swiftly onward.

Then the demoness Sammanakkha learned that the kin of Lanka were all going to wait upon Phra Chakri. Her heart burned in distress. To hide herself where she was seemed impossible. Her mind and breast had no composure, as if someone were striking and killing her. Fear came because she herself had been the first cause; sorrow and grief left her without spirit. The fault clung to her, and she trembled in restless dread. She had to go along with the others; perhaps merit might fulfill her wish, and perhaps Phra Lak and Phra Chakra would show mercy. Having thought this, she seized a thin shawl, walked while pushing back her hair, descended from the jeweled palace, and hurried after them.

When she caught up with the rear of the procession, she glanced about in panic to left and right. Fear of Lady Sida made her eyes wild and slanting. She looked like someone who had lost her mind. She would not come close to the young women, but walked alone, ugly in bearing, speaking with no one.
