Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Thotsakan's crab-disguise at Angkhot's Yamuna bathing rite, his humiliation by Pali, Phra Khobut's heart-removal rite, Kuperan's loss of the Pushpaka and the elephant-tusk wound, Hanuman's departure for practice, Thotsakan's heaven-disguise and offspring, and Ronnaphak's training and divine weapons.

Translation

Thotsakan Hides in the Yamuna

Now the tale will speak of Thao Thotsakan the yaksha. He learned that King Pali would bathe Angkhot tomorrow. "That one is the son of my enemy, born to bring me disgrace. As time passes he will only become treacherous, and all ten directions will receive the scandal, saying that young Montho's child was born from that beast-born wretch. I will kill him and end his life. Then this vexation will cease, and my heart will be at ease."

Having thought this, he came through the window, displayed destructive power until the earth shook, and flew swiftly through the sky straight to the Yamuna.

When he reached the bathing place, he descended at the bank of the fair river. The asura raised joined hands above his crown and recited the Veda.

When the sevenfold recitation was complete, his body turned into a great crab. Having finished this, he crawled down into the water and sank in the river's belly.

Then the radiant monkey king, when golden light shone over sky and earth, rose from his couch. He ordered his royal son Angkhot adorned with divine garments: bracelets fitted on his arms as nagas, armlets, rings, and necklaces.

When this was finished, he had the prince mount the golden vehicle and sent him in procession to the bathing rite. Gongs, drums, and regalia were splendid; elder teachers led the way.

Then the monkey soldiers, great and small, went down and searched through the water, chasing away creatures with tusks and fangs.

They searched in groups and found a bold great crab hiding beside the jeweled parasol-pole. The monkeys rushed in confusion to seize it.

Then Thotsakan, who had become the great crab, opened his claws and roared in a mighty voice, rushing to chase the monkeys in turmoil.

Then the noble monkey soldiers did not know how to withstand his power. Each fled upward.

They bowed their heads at brave Pali's lotus feet and said: "We found an arrogant great crab. We went in to kill it and fight it."

Then the son of Thao Makhawan, skilled in war, heard and drew the trident of destructive power. In anger he plunged into the sea. He split the water, dived, and searched everywhere until he found the brave great crab. He leaped and seized it by his power, and the Yamuna surged in waves.

Then Thotsakan, who had become the great crab, saw King Pali enter the fight. Startled, he changed back into a kumbhanda. He split the water and displayed power, entering battle with strength and vigor. The two brave ones fought, and the sound shook the whole body of the water.

Then the radiant son of Thao Makhawan burned in anger like fire. The monkey lord cried out: "Hey, hey, look at this, Thotsakan, jealous, ugly, and crude. I will kill you and make you perish." Having spoken, he rushed in to attack.

They cut, stabbed, and parried one another, wheeling swiftly like a turning discus. Each struck and fought in turn, fleeing and chasing through the water.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line, once he met Pali hand to hand, lost the force of his power. Though all twenty hands struck and beat, he could not resist or stay close. He only parried and guarded himself, unable to enter the fight.

Then King Pali, skilled in war, pressed after him, cutting and attacking. The monkey kicked the asura, and though Thotsakan sank and surfaced without ceasing to parry, Pali hurled himself in and seized the yaksha. He bound him fast in the river, and the monkey lord brought him up.

Then the brave monkey troops saw their city-ruling lord capture the yaksha and rejoiced. They went in and tied him with great iron ropes. Some mocked him, and they paraded him by the riverbank.

Then the astrologers and elder teachers, all present, saw that the auspicious time had arrived at the very moment the asura was captured. They sounded gongs, trumpets, conches, and drums in thunder. Sukhrip lifted the lovely grandson and walked down to bathe in the river.

When the auspicious bathing was complete, they invited the radiant prince up from the river, and the monkeys escorted him in dense ranks.

When they reached the great palace, bright and shining against the sky, yogins, ascetics, brahmins, elders, royal teachers, and astrologers came in to give blessing according to the science of Phra Isuan. Together they recited the Veda and strengthened the prince's spirit.

Then the great royal teachers of left and right lit candles and circled the jeweled mirror, while trumpet-music was played. Gongs, drums, lutes, conches, and bronze gongs joined in loud sound. Seven circuits were completed according to custom. They extinguished the fire and waved the smoke at once. Then they anointed the prince's face with powder according to the marks in the sacred manual. All the monkey ministers offered victory blessings and auspicious wishes.

Then the company of great sages, once the royal rite was complete, took leave and returned to the teacher's dwelling.

Thotsakan Is Humiliated

Then brave-hearted King Pali ordered the monkey guard Yampawan: "Bring Thotsakan the demon up here."

Then Yampawan, brave monkey guard, received the city-ruling lord's command, bowed farewell, and hurried away.

He reached the place where the asura was bound. The monkey lord pulled the great iron ropes, and all the forest-monkey troops dragged, beat, and drove the kumbhanda along.

When they arrived, they took a stout post, tied and stretched him firmly, and tormented Thotsakan before the bright royal hall.

Then the radiant monkey king saw the ten-headed asura and smiled in contentment. The monkey lord gave royal command to all the troops, great and small: "Go mock him so that this common wretch is satisfied in heart."

Then the brave warrior troops received the command of the son of Thao Makhawan. All ran out in haste.

When they arrived, they pulled, snatched, and dragged the great rope. Some monkeys raised their brows, narrowed their eyes, pointed at him, and mocked the kumbhanda:

"Hey, hey, look here, demon lord. Why keep your face bent down, deluded wretch? Is this the one called Thotsakan, lord of the kumbhandas in Lanka? You boast of Chaturaphak's line and of fierce sacred power, but you could not bear the shame and secretly changed into a crab. Now you are caught at the bathing place. In vain you have ten faces and twenty arms, sitting here sighing. Hey, lord of great Lanka, why not display your power? You are only good at secret harm. You have no birth-honor at all. I see you have no plan left to save your life and go back to Lanka."

Then brave-hearted King Pali laughed and gave command: "Bind Thotsakan for Angkhot, my son, to drag and play with like a great crab." Having given the order, he went into the radiant jeweled victory palace.

Then radiant Prince Angkhot, when dawn brightened the night, came down to the royal hall.

He led Thotsakan and dragged him in play, morning and evening in delight. He gave him the leftover rice of the palace women to eat, one lump each day at every time.

Then brave-hearted King Pali, after capturing and binding Thotsakan, let his son drag him in play for a long time. The asura's body became gaunt and thin with hunger, suffering almost to the end of life. Pali tormented and shamed the demon lord for seven days, intending to make this renown known through the heavens until the end of the age. Then he ordered the kumbhanda untied and released.

Then the chief royal monkey guard received the command of the son of Thao Hatsanai and released him at once.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line had received immeasurable shame. The asura would not raise his face. Wounded, ashamed, and stripped of power beyond endurance, he forced himself to maintain his body and flew away to Lanka city.

When he reached the royal palace, he mounted the shining divine jeweled throne, cast his body down in grief, and sighed.

"Alas, in vain I am glorious in power; the ten directions cannot oppose me. My name is feared everywhere in all three worlds. Once I went to measure strength and was defeated by radiant Arachun. I was ashamed before asuras, gods, and nagas. Now I have been defeated by Pali twice. I am skilled in Vedas, mantras, and powerful arrows, and every divine weapon is mighty. How could I be defeated by such disaster? If I go on making war and lose victory, my life will be lost. I must consult the teacher and perform the work of removing my heart from my body."

The demon king sat silent in thought until dawn's strong light shone. He came down from the bright jeweled throne and moved gracefully out to the shining royal hall.

He gave royal command to a yaksha minister: "Hurry to the sage's hut and invite the holy one here."

Then the demon minister received the command, bowed farewell, and hurried away.

When he reached the hermitage of the ascetic, he raised joined hands and bowed, informing him of the royal command exactly as given.

Then wise and brave Phra Khobut knew that Thotsakan, demon king, had invited him to the royal palace. He put on bark garments in the ascetic way, took staff and fan, left the hut, and hurried in.

When he reached the palace residence, the teacher strong in meditation went up into the shining jeweled palace and sat on the radiant jeweled seat.

Then Thotsakan of the splendid solar line bowed his head to the righteous sage. "Today I have invited you because you are my teacher. You taught me bow-science, Vedas, mantras, and knowledge, all of terrible power. I went to war with Pali twice and could not fight him. The time when Arachun bound me is also known beneath your feet. In the days ahead, if enemies arise, my life will end. I ask you, lord of ascetic wisdom, to devise a way that I may not die."

Then Phra Khobut Rishi smiled and answered: "Asura, do not be troubled. I will set up an ascetic rite and remove your heart for you. Even if someone kills you, you will not perish, because your heart will be outside your body. We will go up to perform the rite on the summit of Nila Khiri mountain. Let no one know the matter." Having spoken, they went together.

When they arrived, the holy one created a tall ritual hall, complete with five-colored parasols, victory banners, incense, candles, and flowers.

Then Thotsakan of the splendid solar line bathed and adorned himself beautifully. His face was anointed with sandal powder like a yogin's. He wore white cotton cloth, held a bright jeweled rosary in his hand, placed a shining sacred cord across himself, and entered the splendid ritual hall.

He took incense, candles, and garlands and worshipped according to the sacred manual. Closing his eyes, he recited the Veda and gathered his mind without wavering.

Then Phra Khobut, teacher strong in meditation, sat in concentration on the meditation seat and bound his spirit to the asura's heart. He took conch-water and vessel-water, poured it over the yaksha's head, recited the Veda of power, and blew over the kumbhanda's whole body.

Then Thotsakan of the splendid solar line closed his eyes, recited the Veda, and performed the ascetic act. Long through that rite he passed: nine months, nine days, and nine minutes. He was filled and did not desire food, for by the power of Veda and ascetic knowledge it was as if he ate divine food at all times. When the heart was about to leave his body, both eyes grew dim, his head swelled, his hair bristled, and he seemed about to lose consciousness. His strength ebbed away; he could no longer sit straight, but collapsed, crouching in place. The heart left the body, and the asura fainted and lay still.

Then Phra Khobut, the great teacher, rejoiced. He picked up the heart and placed it in a jeweled box shining like the sky. The outer layer was set with stone, fitted as closely as a drawn line. When this was finished, the holy one sprinkled water over the asura.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line awoke and recovered his senses, rejoicing that his heart had left his body. He said to the righteous sage: "This rite is not easy to perform. Even if someone kills me, I will not die; I no longer fear the hostile bands. Your powerful kindness is equal to that of my own father. This heart is the important thing. Where will you keep it, righteous one?"

Then Phra Khobut, the great teacher, heard the command and answered: "The heart that has left the body is like a calf parted from its mother, longing for milk and looking for her. If it catches sight of its mother, it will run to her in joy. If the heart is kept near the body, for good or ill it will return to its place. Even if the rite were repeated, life would not come out again. I will help guard it in my hut in the forest, far from the asura king's body. I think no harm will happen."

Then the wise and brave ten-headed one heard the great teacher as if he had gained a wreath from Tusita heaven. He said: "Let it be as your kindness graciously decides. I will depend on the sage's feet until my life ends."

Then the vow-strong ascetic, when the work was finished, gave blessing and farewell, took the heart, and flew to his hut.

Then the twenty-armed yaksha king, once he had sent off the great sage, rejoiced intensely, as if he had gained splendid wealth surpassing the three worlds. Laughing and smiling, the demon lord returned.

Kuperan Loses the Pushpaka

Then the tale turns to Kuperan the yaksha. Since he had come to live in Kalachak city, he went constantly to attend the lord of the world. He rode no horse, chariot, elephant, or other vehicle, but only the bright Pushpaka, which pleased the asura. At sunrise he adorned himself in shining splendor, mounted the jeweled Pushpaka, and went to the place where the lord of the world was attended.

When he reached the slope of Kailasa, he descended from the air. Exalted Phra Isara was gathering his spirit and deepening meditation in the jeweled, adorned palace, on the neck of his mighty elephant. The yaksha stopped in ease at the foot of Mount Kailasa.

He wandered, looking at trees and birds. Everything was lovely, clean, and marvelous. Nori birds perched on fragrant trees; nok kot birds sat beside ket trees. Kaling birds perched on kalong branches; flocks of swans on kathanghan trees. Kalumphu birds gathered on salaengphan; benjawan birds on phawa. Sakron birds perched on pine branches; anchan birds on chamcha trees. Parrots perched on kannika trees, and pheasants on mafai. There were ravines, hollows, vents, clefts, crags, and mountain slopes. The asura rejoiced and delighted at the foot of Mount Kailasa.

Then Thotsakan, yaksha of the solar line, after removing the heart from his body, became bold and arrogant. Envy and unrighteousness arose in him against Kuperan his elder brother. "Our exalted father gave the great Pushpaka to him. I too possess powerful sacred might. I will strike and seize it back." Having thought this, he bathed in the Ganges, put on the array of victorious war, and took weapons in his twenty hands, raising and brandishing them in uproar. Displaying fierce power, he flew upward, crossed the ocean, and entered the clouds.

When he reached the slope of Kailasa and looked out to see his elder brother, he rejoiced and proclaimed: "Look, Kuperan the yaksha, ruler of great Kalachak city. The bright jeweled Pushpaka belongs to victorious Lanka. Our royal father bestowed the royal seat and made me ruler over the yaksha realm. Send me the Pushpaka. If you do not, I will kill you now."

Then mighty Kuperan the yaksha heard Thotsakan's speech and burned with anger, gnashing his teeth. He said: "Our exalted father gave me this territory to rule. All the brothers received their proper shares in order. The divine jeweled Pushpaka was graciously given to me, the elder brother. You are the younger brother and have already received our father's wealth, yet are not satisfied. Now you boast arrogantly, act bold, and insult your elder. I too have fierce power. Why would I fear you, ill-omened wretch?"

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line heard his elder brother's words and grew angry like black fire. He cried: "Hey, Kuperan. Today your life will end." Having spoken, he leaped and rushed in to attack his elder brother.

Then brave-hearted Kuperan, fierce in power, received, parried, and warded him off in confusion, striking left and right. He opposed and fought, attacking Thotsakan many times. Both were brave and enduring, and neither paused.

Then Thotsakan, fierce and strong, was struck by Kuperan's weapons. The kumbhanda grew furious in spirit. He leaped in, seized and blocked him, snatched away the diamond club, and struck Kuperan. Blood flowed over Kuperan's body.

Then mighty Kuperan the yaksha, in pain almost to death, faltered and lost heart. His strength was gone; he could no longer resist Thotsakan's power. In fear, he abandoned the Pushpaka and fled to take refuge with Phra Suli.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line chased close, still striking after him until he reached the place of the lord of the world.

Then mighty Kuperan the yaksha fled as if his life would end, circling around the elephant of the lord of wisdom. He cried out to the lord: "Please favor me and save my life. Thotsakan, crude and common, is chasing and attacking me."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard the asura's voice. The lord glanced and saw Thotsakan, the demon lord, bold, proud in rank, and crude. In anger, he pulled out a tusk from the great elephant and hurled it, lodging it in the asura's chest.

Then by effective speech he added a curse: "Let it remain fixed in the yaksha's breast. Only on the day his life ends shall this tusk leave his body."

Then mighty Thotsakan the yaksha suffered pain almost to death. The asura tried to keep his body upright. All twenty hands pulled and tore at the tusk, but it would not come out of his chest. His heart fell. He did not continue striking his elder brother; afraid of death, he ran away.

In severe pain, unable even to turn back, he mounted the bright jeweled Pushpaka and floated swiftly through the clouds.

When he reached the palace residence, he ordered a yaksha minister: "Go find the god Vishnukam and say that I summon him now."

Then the demon minister received the command, displayed his power, and flew up into the sky.

When he arrived, he told the god: "Thao Thotsakan, skilled in war, has sent me to invite you, mighty one, to the city of Lanka."

Then brave Phra Vishnukam learned the asura's words, displayed power, and flew away.

When he arrived and descended from the air, the wise divine king entered the victorious audience hall and sat near the asura king.

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line saw Phra Vishnukam and rejoiced. He spoke fair words: "Look, prosperous one. I suffer almost to the end of life because Phra Isuaro was angry and hurled a tusk into my breast. He also cursed it so that it will not come out. However much I pull and drag, it will not move. I ask you to craft a remedy: saw away the elephant tusk, make an ornament to cover it, wonderful, shining, and bright, so that the elephant tusk is not seen and the adornment sits close and beautiful."

Then radiant Phra Vishnukam sawed the tusk at the asura's chest so that no blemish remained on the body.

In less than the blink of an eye the tusk was cut by the brave divine king's power. Then he created a crafted ornament to cover the demon king's chest.

When this was finished, the god took leave of Thotsakan, left the royal palace, flew up into the sky, and went straight to his adorned palace.

Hanuman Goes to Practice

Now the tale will speak of Hanuman, skilled in war, living in the city of Khitkhin under Pali, king of the monkeys. He served as the king's eyes and heart, never negligent, performing royal affairs fully. Delighting every day and night, the monkey began to reflect: he wished to keep vows and gather his mind, so that his brave power would increase. Having thought this, the son of Phra Phai came into the royal hall.

When he arrived, he bowed at King Pali's lotus feet and said: "I ask leave of the righteous lord to go and establish the rite of brahmacharya."

Then the radiant monkey king heard his nephew, dear as life, and felt pain in his heart. He embraced his beloved nephew, looked at his face, sighed deeply, and said: "You will go out to keep vows in the wilderness. Son, may you accomplish your thought, and may your name and power be famous in every direction. When this is finished, hurry back, so you may be as my eyes and hands."

Then bold Hanuman, skilled in war, bowed his head to receive the blessing with a fine, auspicious heart. Then he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of noble Sukhrip, gave instructions to dear Angkhot, and flew away.

He reached the Khataliwan forest and chose a great jambolan tree whose dense shade hid the sun's light. He lived there in pleasant meditation.

Thotsakan's Wandering and His Children

Then the brave-hearted ten-headed one enjoyed splendid royal happiness with the women of his retinue. Yet he was not satisfied with the taste of love. The yaksha king wished to enjoy himself with lovely heavenly women, and the asura flew to the city of heaven.

He reached the realm of Makhawan, in the territory of the Thirty-Three. He recited a powerful Veda and changed his kumbhanda body.

He adorned himself in a pleasing form, like Thao Hatsanai himself, and moved gracefully into the shining golden palace.

When he arrived, he sat on the throne of the heavenly women and grasped at them in delight. He teased and played, joining with them in pleasure.

Then he went wandering and coupling through every golden palace, great and small, touching cheeks and bodies, stroking and praising the divine flowers. He traveled through all six heavens, and the asura lived in happiness and delight, absorbed in pleasure for seven nights.

Then Montho, his chief queen, did not know where her husband had gone. For seven days she waited, lamenting in sorrow and weeping. All the women and attendants of the inner palace mourned and yearned for the kumbhanda.

Then Chiwaha, fierce and strong in power, learned that Thao Thotsakan had been gone many days and had not returned. Beautiful Montho and the palace women grieved in worry and longing. The demon lord wished to learn the matter, and he hurried to attend the goddess.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and raised joined hands above his crown, saying: "Your Majesty, queen mother, we do not know clearly whether the earth-ruling lord fares well or ill. You grieve, but you do not know the matter. The bright jeweled Pushpaka of Lord Sahamaliwan was given to Thao Chaturaphak, the chief grandfather. It is an important means of divination. If a woman whose husband has died rides the Pushpaka, it will not stir and float through the sky. If he is well and still alive, the Pushpaka will carry her flying. Do not grieve in burning sorrow. Test the bright jeweled Pushpaka, and you will know clearly whether the news is bad or good."

Then beautiful Queen Montho heard Chiwaha's speech and came to the palace forecourt.

When she arrived, she mounted the jeweled Pushpaka, raised joined hands, and made a vow of truth. It floated swiftly into the sky, beautiful like great Vejayanta. Its jewels shone brightly, like sunlight. It circled clockwise around the kumbhanda city, then wheeled back down.

Then the palace women of left and right, ministers, ascetics, brahmins, and elders all saw clearly. They knew that the earth-ruling lord had gone safely and that no misfortune had occurred. Their grief and longing ended, and happiness increased.

Then the brave-hearted twenty-armed one, after finishing his deception of the heavenly women, flew back to the city.

Then the heavenly women of every rank learned that Thotsakan the asura had come in disguise and joined with them. Hurt and resentful, they wept in grief as if life would end, and told the gods throughout all the heavenly levels.

Then the divine youths, great and small, heard and were full of pain and resentment, as if someone had torn away their lives. If they attacked him outright, they feared the power of Thotsakan the yaksha. Their faces lost composure, and they only shared their distress.

Then Thao Thotsakan the yaksha, changing form to deceive the heavenly women, gave no thought to the face of heaven. He acted wickedly, confused by sensual desire, deluded, violent, and crude. Then he transformed into a fish and joined with a female fish, until a beautiful daughter was born named Nang Suphan Matcha. Then he transformed into a great elephant and wandered in the Himmaphan forest, joining in pleasure with a female elephant. Two mighty princes were born, named Kirithon and Kiriwan. Their bodies were of yaksha kind, but their faces resembled their mother, and Atsakan the asura raised them.

Lovely Montho also bore a beloved son. He was dearer than the solar line in the victorious city, and she named him Prince Ronnaphak. A thousand palace women also conceived and gave birth to sons named the Sahat Kumara asuras. The yaksha king loved them all in order. He gave them wet nurses and attendants, who held, sang to, and cherished them. Morning and evening they came to attend him constantly, like stars surrounding the moon at night.

Ronnaphak's Training and Weapons

Then Ronnaphak the yaksha, when he had reached fifteen years, was already coarse and base. He wanted to study the science of the bow, so that he might gain brave power under wise Phra Khobut, his father's teacher. Having thought this, he adorned himself in radiant nine-jeweled ornaments, descended from the splendid palace, and walked to the shining royal hall.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet, prostrating at the splendid feet of his father and mother, and said: "Your child asks leave to go study the Three Vedas and mantras, so that war-power may shine in bravery. Then his royal father and mother heard their son's speech and rejoiced, their thoughts fulfilled. They stroked his back and said: "Son, if you go to study the science of the powerful bow, it accords with the mighty solar line. May it be as your heart desires."

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, received the blessing of his father and mother, bowed farewell, and flew away.

When he reached the teacher's residence, he went in, paid respect, bowed, and said: "I have set my mind to live beneath the sage's feet."

Then Phra Khobut, great rishi, heard Ronnaphak and rejoiced. He answered: "Beloved grandchild, if you would study knowledge, I, your teacher, will teach you. Hold firm in diligence, and you will gain what you desire." Having spoken, the holy one taught him Vedas, mantras, devices, stratagems, and formulas according to the Three Vedas of Brahma, giving him every matter.

Then the brave-hearted son of Thao Thotsakan served his teacher, massaging and attending him. He applied himself for half a year. He memorized the Three Vedas and mantras completely, so they were ready in his mouth and heart. He did not miss or slip in the sage's words, as if they were diamond iron carved in stone.

Then Phra Khobut, teacher strong in meditation, saw that Ronnaphak was quick in wisdom and skilled in the knowledge he had learned. He spoke fair words: "Look, royal grandchild. There is one powerful Veda, named Maha Kala Akkhi. Worship the three lords; apply yourself according to the sage's Veda. If the full seven-year term is completed, your power will shine by the victorious bow. Go sit on the meditation seat at Phokas on the mountain slope. Discipline the body, gather the mind, and you will accomplish what you desire."

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, heard the great holy one and rejoiced. The asura bowed at the lotus feet of Phra Khobut Rishi, left the forest hut, and went along the forest road.

When he reached Phokas, a stone platform at the foot of the mountain, there was a place with a bathing-stream where the sea-current ran swiftly in whirls.

He went down, washed, and bathed, refreshing his yaksha body. He wore clean white cotton cloth, with a white shoulder cloth crossing the asura's shoulder. He bound his hair in a matted crest and took on the appearance of a rishi. He anointed his face three times with powder, wore a jeweled rosary, tied on the ascetic loincloth, placed the shining sacred cord, gathered his mind and restrained the senses, and walked to the stone seat.

He entered, sat, steadied his body, and calmed his mind according to the rite of equanimity. He recited the Brahma Veda between the ritual skull and the fire-pit, fasting from water and food, disciplining himself without leaving the place. When the full seven years were complete, he succeeded according to his effort.

Then the three lords became hot in heart as if fire had spread, and doubt arose in their spirits. Each looked with divine eyes and learned the reason: the yaksha Ronnaphak had set up a ritual skull rite and long worshipped the Veda, hoping to ask for powerful arrows of brave force. They left their divine palaces and flew to the asura.

When they arrived, all three stood before Ronnaphak the yaksha, making their bodies visible, and gave divine command: "Hey, demon lord. You have come to perform a great rite. What do you desire? Tell us the matter clearly."

Then Ronnaphak the yaksha heard the divine royal command. The asura opened his eyes and looked. Seeing the three lords, incomparable in splendor, he came out of the ritual fire-place and bowed before them. He said: "I am the servant beneath the feet of the three world-ruling lords. I have labored to perform this rite because I ask for arrows of power."

Then the three radiant lords heard the asura ask for mighty arrows. Phra Swayambhu bestowed the Brahmastra arrow on the yaksha, together with the Veda for changing bodily form into Indra when needed. Thao Maha Brahma bestowed the Naga-snare arrow and gave a victory blessing: "May your fierce power shine like flame. If you must die, may you die in the air, astonishing all the worlds. If your head is cut from your body and falls to the earth, let it become the fire at the end of an age. Only if the divine jeweled tray of Brahma, supreme creator, receives the kumbhanda's head will that fire not burn the world." Phra Narai bestowed the powerful Vishnupanam arrow on the yaksha. When this was finished, the three lords returned to their radiant jeweled palaces.

Then the son of Thao Thotsakan the yaksha rejoiced at receiving the three arrows. The asura took leave of his teacher. When this was finished, he bowed, displayed brave power, flew up into the sky, and returned to the royal seat of Lanka.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of his royal father and exalted mother in the shining great palace.

Then his royal father and mother embraced their son in joy and asked: "You went to study the arts and sciences. Did you accomplish your desire or not? Since the day you left the victorious city, we have waited for you at all times."

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, bowed his head and answered: "Your child left your feet for many years. I labored diligently and studied the sage's arts. I learned the Three Vedas and their rites completely. Then I performed the ritual skull fire-offering. I received three mighty arrows from the three lords and returned to the victorious city, intending to serve beneath your feet."

Then his royal mother and father heard their son tell the matter and were filled with immeasurable joy. They said: "Son, summit of the solar line, you are worthy to hold the kingdom, to be lord over the asura-yaksha host and pillar of Lanka city."
