Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the eightieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Sida's fire ordeal and vindication, Rama receiving her back, Phiphek receiving custody of Lanka, Thotsakan's royal cremation, Rama's victorious entry into Lanka, and the preparations for Phiphek's consecration.

Sida's Fire Trial and the New Order of Lanka

Then Phiphek, who had good understanding, when he arrived, halted the busabok and went in before the pavilion.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of the lord who rides Garuda and subdues the serpent. In the midst of the soldiers and army he reported, "I, your loyal servant, have invited the beautiful noble lady, the chief queen of auspicious grace, to come wait upon the dust of your lotus feet."

Then Phra Chakri, brave in wisdom, heard Phiphek the demon lord. The lord of the sky was filled with joy, as if a jeweled gem had been placed in the hand of the discus-bearing lord. Wishing to see the lovely lady, he turned his face and looked. He saw the jeweled busabok, radiant like the moon, with young royal women of lovely form sitting in layered ranks, like stars surrounding the moon in the sky. Then he gave royal command and asked Phiphek the kumbhanda: "Those women sitting on the two sides, shaped like heavenly apsaras, and the two princes seated at the front holding golden garlands - are they the solar-line kin of Thotsaphak? And all the palace women who have followed, who are they?"

Then Phiphek of the solar-line yakshas bowed his head and answered the royal command: "These two princes: the one on the right is named Yamaliwan, and the yaksha on the left is Kanyuwek. They are sons of Intharachit the asura, brothers born from one womb. The lady seated next to the princes is lovely Suwannakanyuma, wife of powerful Intharachit and mother of both asuras. That is lovely Benchakai, my beloved daughter. Next is Chanthawadi, wife of Kumbhakan the asura. That is Trichada, my wife, who stayed with the chief queen in the pleasure garden. The lady on the right is named beautiful Montho. On the left is Lady Kala Akki, queen of the ten-faced yaksha. All the rest are heavenly maidens who have descended to accompany the young lady."

Then Lady Sida, highest in feeling, sat in the splendid busabok and pondered in thought: "I was cut off and separated from the feet of supreme Phra Chakkrit because Thotsakan, the enemy, acted wickedly and stole me away. I have lived in the garden for many years. I do not know whether his lotus feet will think well or ill of me; perhaps he may hold suspicion in his heart. If I wait near the lord of the world and he does not speak to me, where can I place my face? My shame will multiply. I must watch the bearing of the radiant avatar from the front of the bright pavilion. Whether good or bad, the matter will become clear." Having thought this, she opened the golden curtain, had the heavenly women lead before her, descended from the splendid busabok, and walked forward with graceful steps.

She lowered herself and paid homage to the bow-bearing lord of the three worlds. Remaining on the surface of the earth, the lady lowered her face and did not speak.

Then the world-crowned lord, whose glory outshone the worlds, saw his chief royal queen and felt joy beyond thought. He wished to go embrace the lovely lady and hold her upon Phra Chakkrit's lap, but he feared the gods and powerful asuras of all ten directions would jeer at him, and that the hundreds of thousands of soldiers and monkeys would mock him, saying, "I love this lady without shame before the three worlds. My mind is bewildered by desire and lost in affection; I have not considered carefully that when a woman falls into a man's hands, suspicion and stain arise. It is like a cruel Garuda seizing a naga and carrying it away, holding it in his beak; whether much or little, its heart must be bruised and troubled by the bird's power. So too my chief wife fell into the hands of the yaksha. Who can know whether good or evil occurred? Only I and the lovely lady know; apart from us, the three worlds do not know. This matter is deeply shameful. I must free my face from contempt and quiet the doubt in my heart, so that all ten directions know clearly everywhere. Then no stain or wicked slander will remain through all the kalpa."

Having thought this, he spoke, moving his mouth in formal address: "Look, chief beloved lady. I endured hardship and followed you here, crossing the broad and deep ocean to make war and destroy the yaksha host. I did not care for life because of love for you alone. Today I see your lovely face shining like the bright moon. As for me, I suffered and wore down my body, while you have lived comfortably for many years. You have received rich possessions and garments, gifts of the yaksha king, excellent beyond all the earth. Let me see some of them, to delight my eyes."

Then young Lady Sida, finest in love, heard the royal command as if struck by a hundred thousand thunderbolts. Even when Thotsakan the yaksha lord secretly stole her away, her heart had not hurt as it did now at this rebuke. Shame and disgrace overwhelmed her as if life would end. She did not know what words could answer so that the lord of the sky would see the truth. "O heart, to be born a woman is hard beyond measure; suspicion and doubt always arise around women." Having thought this, she joined her hands, bowed, and reported: "Lord of men, please show mercy. As for your servant, the asura stole me away. I fell into a man's hands and went far from the eyes of the powerful world-crowned lord. This gives rise to doubt in the hearts of the worlds, heaven, and earth. Even if I guarded myself well, I do not see how the stain can be entirely removed, unless the immortal gods, the river Ganga, and Fire become witnesses and leave no suspicion. Let Your Majesty sound the victorious bow and assemble all divine lords together. I ask to prove myself by fire, as an offering before the feet of glorious Phra Narai, in the presence of the gods and the monkey army."

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai who bears the bow, heard the chief royal lady and rejoiced because his thought had been fulfilled. "This Lady Sida is straight and true, firm in righteous truth and honest mind. She is fit to be mother of the powerful gods; no woman in all ten directions can equal her." Having thought this, he gave royal command: "Beloved jewel of my eyes, all that you have said and lamented is true in every way. But who else could have seen? It remains a matter for dislike and suspicion. Only I and the lovely lady have known each other's hearts." Having spoken, he rose and stood above the seat, beautiful as a divine figure. The lord of the sky took the mighty Chanthawathit bow and shot it at once.

The sound thundered through the trembling world and every level of the radiant sky. Then the arrow returned to Phra Chakri's quiver as if it possessed a living soul.

Now I will tell of the lord of the Trayastrimsa realm, seated upon his splendid divine throne in the great Wetchayan palace, together with the assembled gods and the heavenly apsaras. Hearing that sound ringing and resounding through the earth, he looked down with divine sight and knew that glorious Lady Lakshmi would pass through fire as an offering to Phra Chakri at the golden pavilion. So he led the gods and the beloved heavenly women out from the jeweled palace and flew down swiftly by their power.

When they reached Emerald Mountain, they came straight down at the foot of the great mountain and sat in ranked order near the victorious pavilion of the righteous lord.

Then the jewel-bearing Phra Chakra, seeing the gods assembled together, was pleased. He gave a commanding order to the radiant son of the Sun: "Take fire kindling and pile it before the pavilion."

Then Sukhrip, lordly in honor, received Phra Chakra's command, bowed in farewell, and went out.

He ordered all the monkeys, with the great soldier son of Phra Phai, to carry and bring fuel and firewood and pile it along the royal way.

Then Phra Narai of the radiant solar line took the fire-arrow, and the king shot it with power.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of the age, shaking and rolling up to Dusit. It blazed like the sun, catching the fuel and becoming a dazzling flame.

Then young Lady Sida, finest in love, saw the fire blazing with sky-bright light, fierce as the fire of time. She bowed her head to her husband, set her mind in vow, and spoke a truth-oath before the gods and Makhawan assembled together: "May every divine lord be a manifest heavenly witness. If I have mingled in love with Thotsaphak or with any man other than Phra Chakkrit - even if only in my thought I desired another, was not loyal to the feet of the lord of the world, or did any evil act - then may Lord Fire kill me here. May I fall into Avici hell and not escape suffering for hundreds of kalpas and thousands of years. But if I have kept true faith, may the gods help me to happiness. When I step into the burning fire, may every step leave my feet unburned." Then she reverently saluted the fire-pile and placed the earth upon her head. When she had finished establishing truth, she walked gracefully into the fire.

By the power of her honest truth, no heat touched her lotus feet. Divine golden lotuses appeared in the midst of the fire of time, opening their petals and spreading sweet fragrance. They received the water-bearing lotus feet at every step of the goddess.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai, all the gods and heavenly women, all the monkeys and kumbhandas, saw the golden lotuses shining bright in the middle of the fire and receiving the lovely young lady. Her radiance blazed together with the strong flames. The young lady's body glowed yellow-gold, her chains and coral ornaments gleaming. Her face shone like the haloed moon after cloud and mist have cleared away. All the powerful gods and asuras throughout every direction blessed her. Some sounded music in a great roar that shook Emerald Mountain. Some showered delicate divine flowers, whose fragrance spread over all the earth. The asuras and monkey lords all raised joined hands above their heads and praised the goddess's truth, filling the pavilion front with tumult. Amarin blew the conch as a proclamation and, with auspicious sweet words, invited the beloved young lady to come out from the middle of the fire.

Then young Lady Sida, finest in love, heard Thao Hatsanai and came out from the fire-pile.

She sat down, bowed her head, and paid homage to her radiant royal husband and to Lord Hatsanai at the bright pavilion front.

Then Phra Kritsanurak the creator saw the lovely lady unharmed in the middle of the fire and rejoiced because his thought had been fulfilled, as if a poisoned dart had been pulled away. He descended from the shining jeweled seat and went down to the lady.

He lifted his hand, stroked her back, looked into the beloved young lady's face, welcomed back her spirit, and brought the chief royal lady up into the splendid pavilion.

They sat together upon the throne-seat. With the beloved young younger lady beside him, the king was filled with enduring happiness and blessing, smiling brightly.

Then all the solar-line royal women, the yakshas, the monkeys, officers, and common soldiers saw powerful Phra Narai seated face to face with the chief queen, like divine figures in a painting. Phra Chakra was beautiful in body and bearing, beyond comparison in all three worlds. Glorious Lady Lakshmi was more beautiful than the apsaras in heaven. The dignity of their solar line matched, and both sustained the world. The more all gazed, the more beauty delighted their hearts. Everyone loved and marveled, raising hands to bow at the lotus feet of the crown-lord of the earth.

Then Hatsanai, lord of the Trayastrimsa realm, ordered the attendant gods to perform dances as an offering.

Then the gods and apsaras received Lord Amarin's command, joining their hands in joy.

[Phra Thong]

They began the dance offering, drawing and moving their hands in graceful gestures, circling like swans in motion, close beside the heavenly women. Then they cast both soft arms outward, swaying in near to the apsaras. They glanced sideways, reached and grasped in lively play, turning and changing their movements. They mingled, stepped across, spread out, seized and drew the beautiful apsaras, shifting posture into polo horses, as if playing in rows and veering away. They moved their eyes to meet the women's eyes, then stepped aside and came near the shoulder, teasing and playing with the inner heavenly women, and every god delighted.

Then the lovely heavenly apsaras saw the gods pressing close, clinging, blocking and barring the way before them. They walked and danced in flight, pretending not to let the gods come near. Then they circled and changed, their eyes glancing sideways. They danced and moved their hands to provoke, making gestures of coyness and turning aside, luring and drawing the paired hands, avoiding and turning away by art. When the divine youths came from the left, the heavenly women shifted to the right. They interwove, changed places, and circled around, and gods and heavenly women rejoiced.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai, when the dances offered to Phra Chakri and beautiful Lady Lakshmi were finished, invited the hosts of gods and all the heavenly apsaras to take leave of the lord who rides Garuda. Together they flew away to the sky.

Then young Lady Lakshmi, finest in love, bowed down before the feet of Phra Chakra, her husband, and reported: "Your servant was deluded by the yaksha's stratagem and did not listen to Your Majesty's words; therefore the asura was able to steal me away. Your Majesty had to follow me and wage war against the yakshas, enduring hardship in body. My fault is very great. The life of your younger servant lies beneath the feet of the discus-bearing lord. I ask pardon for my worthlessness. May Phra Harirak show mercy."

Then Phra Chakri, brave in wisdom, received her spirit and spoke: "All this happened because of old enmity. I do not hold fault or anger against you, young beloved. On the day Thotsaphak stole you away, I had followed the deer. When I drove the deer and met Phra Lak, I suffered deeply for you, beautiful one; my heart and mind lost all sense, and I hurried back. When I reached the hermitage and did not see you, I grieved even more and went searching after you. I met the lordly bird and learned what had happened to you. Then I mustered the monkey army and crossed the ocean to battle. The hardship was beyond measure; my life nearly ended. When the asura Benchakai feigned death and floated upon the flowing water, I grieved as if my heart would break, until Hanuman captured her. Another time I nearly lost my life when brave Maiyarap the kumbhanda enchanted the army, seized me, and took me to the underworld; Hanuman followed and brought me up. As for Phra Lak, he too suffered greatly for you. First he was struck by Kumbhakan the yaksha's Mokhasak spear, then by Intharachit's Nagabas arrow and Brahmastra, then by the spear of the asura Mulpalam, and by Thotsakan's powerful Kabilphat weapon. Phra Lak was gravely wounded five times, each time near death. But Hanuman and Phiphek were able to cure and relieve him in time. Without them we would all have perished. How else could I have seen you, beautiful one? By the power of our merit, I did not lose my life."

Then lovely Lady Sida, beloved and graceful, heard the royal command. Tears gathered in her eyes as she reported: "Your Majesty's compassion and mercy are endless. Your goodness is heavier than the earth of the three worlds; nothing can be compared with it. While I was far from the feet of my radiant royal husband, living in the asura's garden, I endured suffering at every hour. Thotsakan spoke lustful, offensive words; my anger almost ended my life. Even the asura maidservants were exceedingly crude, threatening all kinds of killing and speaking every harsh thing. My heart was wounded beyond endurance. I waited for news of the lord of the sky, but no news came. So I tied a cloth around my neck to end my life and hoped to meet your feet in a new birth. Hanuman arrived in time and saved me, giving me the splendid shawl and ring in the demon lord's garden. Then he told me that the bow-bearing lord had raised the monkey army and come to battle the asuras. I rejoiced beyond thought and strove to keep my life while waiting. Thus I have met your feet; otherwise I would have died." Having spoken, she addressed Phra Lak: "Beloved younger brother, you suffered because of me and nearly died many times. You are like a younger sibling born from the same womb. It was not in vain that you were a companion in hardship, full of grief and trouble in the forest. You shared happiness, suffering, and life itself. Your goodness is multiplied a thousandfold."

Then radiant Phra Lak, blessed in glory, heard the royal lady's speech, joined his hands, and answered: "My elder sister, who bears auspicious marks, and Phra Harirak my lord have shown goodness to me, your younger servant, like father and mother. Because of your honest mercy, even when I erred you taught me. We shared happiness, suffering, and heat from the time we left the royal city. I followed Phra Hariwong to wage war against the yakshas, not caring for life, and will repay my elder ones' goodness until my breath ends."

Then Phra Chakri, brave in wisdom, saw his victorious younger brother and the lovely young Lady Sida speaking together. The righteous lord was filled with joy; his face shone like the moon freed from cloud and stain. He gave royal command to Phiphek, the demon yaksha lord: "Now that I have subdued the asura host, all the wicked and unrighteous ones, all the thorns of the earth have ended their lives. The war against the kumbhandas is finished. You shall rule Lanka and be lord over the powerful asuras, continuing the yaksha lineage in days to come. Sustain the troops and armies, and be a great support, excellent and mighty."

Then Phiphek, who had good understanding, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and answered: "Your Majesty, in mercy, will have me rule the glorious city of Lanka. Your goodness is higher than sky and earth; nothing can compare. But I am filled with trembling fear, lest enemies break in and destroy us. By the power of the avatar, please be the chief protector over the asuras." Having spoken, he bowed his head, took leave of the supreme lord's feet, crawled out from the pavilion front, and returned with the others into the city.

When they arrived, he sat upon the seat, with yaksha ministers, kin, and asuras gathered around. Then he gave royal command to wise Paowanasura: "Appoint officers on left and right and have them prepare the beautiful royal crematorium, so that we may perform the funeral of my elder brother who has perished."

Then Paowanasura, the great minister, bowed his head, received the king's command, and went out to press the work forward.

He had a great golden crematorium erected, bright and shining, four-faced and five-spired like a heavenly palace, towering high into the sky. Directional and subsidiary crematoriums were ranked in rows, like the Sattaphan mountains. There were tiers of Indra and Brahma figures with joined hands, and rows of kinnara and gandharva images. It was adorned with royal fences, umbrellas, and standards, jeweled finials alternating in ranks. Inside the golden crematorium stood a radiant jeweled throne. The ceiling was embroidered with gold as moon and stars, shining with jeweled light. Pendants, tassels, and gem clusters were all completed according to the royal command.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king had the body of the lord of Lanka brought up onto the great royal victory chariot, adorned with high regalia, white umbrellas, jeweled fans, and splendid yak-tail standards. The appointed escort troops filled the ranks, with lead-chariots and draw-chariots arranged in order. Victory drums, flutes, and gongs sounded with a deep thunderous roar; curved trumpets and foreign trumpets answered in pairs, making a loud tumult. He had the royal corpse-chariot of the world-crowned yaksha lord move in procession along the royal road to the shining golden crematorium.

When they arrived, he had the bright jeweled urn, splendid with radiance, carried up onto the jeweled bier in the splendid crematorium.

Then young Lady Montho, full of feeling, and young lovely Akki beat their breasts and lamented. All the solar-line kin and all the women attendants, small and great, grieved in love, rolling and writhing without sense.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king took incense, candles, and fragrant flowers and paid homage to the body of his supreme elder brother, remembering the wrongs he had done before. Love and sorrow rose in him. He joined his hands and bowed at the lotus feet. Then he placed eaglewood, fragrant sandalwood, and every sweet perfume into the splendid jeweled urn, and the demon king lit the fire. All the solar-line royals and the young palace women together asked forgiveness of the asura, joined their hands, and offered fire at the same time.

When the funeral of his elder brother was completed in the shining golden crematorium, Phiphek led all the palace women back up to the victory palace.

When they arrived, they entered the bathing place, bathed their bodies in cool clear scented water, put on shining nine-gem ornaments, and went to mount the divine chariot.

He had the great brave armies move out from the splendid city to wait upon Phra Chakri's lotus feet.

When he arrived, he had the chariot halt outside the radiant golden pavilion, descended from the jeweled chariot, and went straight in.

He prostrated before the monkey army, joined his hands, bowed, and reported to the lord of the three worlds that he had completed Thotsaphak's funeral: "I invite the lotus feet of the world-ruling lord to enter and step upon the yaksha city of Lanka, so that your fame and dignity may spread, lasting as long as moon and sun, like diamond iron engraved upon the mountains. Become the crown of your servant and subjects. May the king show mercy."

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai, heard the younger brother of the lord of Lanka and felt mercy toward the kumbhanda. His face shone like the moon; the king was glad and full of joy. He commanded the son of the Sun: "Prepare the army. We will raise the march and enter the glorious city of Lanka, stepping upon the asura earth in victory over wicked danger."

Then Sukhrip, brave and powerful of heart, received the command of the avatar, bowed, and crawled out.

He appointed the monkey lords in a great marching procession. The vanguard was entirely made of the powerful ones, holding red-barreled firearms. Next came the monkeys of Tiao Phet, carrying spears according to their posts. Next came those carrying sharp swords, alternating as they walked with the golden-lance troops. Before Phra Chakraphut's chariot, the eighteen crowned chiefs moved in ordered rows, with monkeys walking beside and guarding both sides of the royal victory chariot. Mighty Hanuman and all his monkey attendants held the rear guard in ranked procession, waiting for the glorious lord to set out.

Then powerful Phra Chakkrit, bearer of the bow, with Phra Lak and beautiful Lady Sida, moved gracefully to bathe in the river.

The three royals cleansed and bathed with fragrant water and divine flowers. Phra Hariwong the mighty and his powerful younger brother put on lifted-hem trousers patterned with curling stems and royal lions. The lady wore an udumphon cloth on a green ground with kinnara figures in graceful design. The two lords wore divine garments carefully brought and offered by the gods, fluttering side-cloths and carved side-panels, each with different shining golden upper garments. The lady wore a star-brocade shawl, jeweled girdle, breast-jewel, and breast ornaments. Each wore directional plates, chain-garlands, golden makara armlets, and jeweled bracelets. Yellow diamond rings in cut-gem settings shone on all ten fingers. Jeweled crowns, earrings, flower ornaments, and bright ear-guards delighted the eye. Phra Chakri was beautiful in form and body, Lady Lakshmi was beautiful and beloved, and his glorious younger brother was beautiful too. All three mounted their chariots.

O chariot, heavenly chariot: the two bright chariots were tall and lovely. Poles, yokes, curves, hubs, rims, and wheels were all made of mixed gems. Throne platforms, finials, and jeweled decorations stood among alternating Garuda and lion panels. Phra Hariwong and Sida rode the splendid great Wetchayan chariot. Phra Lak rode a jeweled royal chariot made entirely of pearls, drawn by divine horses leaping forward while the charioteer drove like the blowing wind. High peacock umbrellas and royal shades, striped flags and banners fluttered at their tips. The escorting troops pressed close, and gongs and drums resounded in uproar. Curved trumpets and foreign trumpets joined their sound, ringing in tumult. Dust darkened the sky above as Phiphek led the army into Lanka.

They turned and looked around the royal city, as if it were the city of glorious Brahma. Moats, embankments, boundaries, and roads were all paved with patterned shining stone. Jeweled walls joined together. Battle towers rose high and lofty. Golden-sleeved pillars lifted the gate arches, and jeweled doors folded and swung. Boundary stones were covered with gold level with the ground. Cannons stood ready in the embrasures. Jeweled roofs were edged with hanging bells, and umbrellas and flags were planted in beautiful rows. They toured every level in sequence: elephant-halls and chariot-halls shone bright; cool jeweled seats and sparkling gems glimmered; the courtyards and streets looked pleasing. Palaces and residences stood in measured rows, with service halls and attendants' buildings. The three palaces were splendid beyond compare, with divine jeweled floors rising high. Four-faced buildings shone like golden palaces, their walls spread with diamonds like fireflies. Five spires flashed with jewels; curved ornaments and brackets were delicate. Roof-crest colors shone with pearls, and jeweled coral finials gleamed. The four-armed lord gazed with delight, pleased in his eyes, and ordered the chariot driven onward.

Then Phiphek, who had good understanding, when he reached the victorious palace court, had the Wetchayan chariot stop beside the jeweled and golden landing, bright and radiant. Then he bowed his head in homage and reported to the righteous powerful lord: "I invite Your Majesty's feet to enter the shining jeweled palace and refresh your royal body. May the king show mercy."

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai, heard Phiphek the asura, and the lord of the sky was filled with joy. He descended to the splendid landing, fit for the lord of kings to walk upon, and with Lady Sida and Phra Lak turned his face and ascended the asura's palace.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, bright with jeweled light, beneath the shining white umbrella in the demon king's residence.

Then young Lady Montho, full of feeling, learned that the avatar, lord of the sky, had entered and was now seated upon the lion-throne in the palace of the yaksha king. She arranged the young palace women, and together they came to wait upon the four-armed lord.

They bowed their heads at his lotus feet and prostrated before the bow-bearing lord. All the beautiful women lay layered in ranks, spread densely before him. They were beautiful in neat order, like stars surrounding the moon, beautiful in form and charm, pleasing to the heart, lovely and graceful to the eye.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king ordered the young women, all the musicians and the women dancers of the inner palace, to join in singing, playing strings, and beating time, and to dance as an offering before Phra Chakri so that the king's heart might be pleased.

The serving women sang in lamenting sweetness, answering one another in slow and measured sound. Wailing and plaintive, they played the music and joined their voices in sweet words. The dancers moved in graceful gestures, stepping and turning with artful charm. They interwove and circled, mingling and turning as they danced in offering. They formed the posture of Mekhala luring with the jewel, then glanced toward the bow-bearing lord. Desire for both Phra Lak the mighty and the lord himself made their extended hands fall out of rhythm. The women playing strings and clappers could no longer strike the proper beat; bewildered by the two kings, their hearts throbbed and lost composure.

Then the radiant solar-line lord, together with the chief royal queen and his beautiful younger brother, sat upon the divine seat in the shining palace chamber, in the sandalwood palace residence of Thotsakan, lord of Lanka. The lord of the sky watched the women dancers moving like lovely apsaras, and listened to the music of strings, singing, and recitation, pleased and delighted.

When the radiant sun rose with golden shining light, he bathed, dressed in splendid garments, and came out to the audience hall.

With the eighteen crowned chiefs, the brave mighty soldiers, and the demon ministers all densely attending his feet, he gave a lion-voiced command to mighty Chomphuvarat: "You, who are wise, find the auspicious victorious hour for the great consecration rite, so that it may be blessed and firmly established, and I may give the great city of Lanka to Phiphek to rule."

Then Chomphuvarat, the shining monkey, heard Phra Chakri's command, joined his hands, and received the royal order. He set the era, multiplied and divided, compared it against the horoscope of Phiphek the asura king, and purified the search for the lunar auspice. The remainder was five, entirely auspicious, free from unlucky day-sign and hostile conjunction. He bowed and reported to the lord who rides Garuda: "Tomorrow is very good. All the eight planetary gods will assemble in the zodiac sign of Aries. Therefore giving Lanka to the yaksha king will make him a support as long as sky and earth endure."

Then the world-crowned lord, whose glory outshone the worlds, heard Chomphuvarat and was pleased. He gave a lion-voiced command to the son of the Sun, wise and brave: "Have the great demon ministers arrange the asura's consecration."

Then Sukhrip, the shining monkey king, received Phra Chakri's command, offered joined hands, and went out.

He appointed everyone according to office and had the royal palace decorated. The floors were spread cleanly and splendidly; screens were set and curtains of golden vinework were hung. From the ceiling hung fragrant tassel clusters, scented like a divine heavenly palace. Jeweled and golden offering pyramids shone bright, seven tiers adorned with nine gems. Then he prepared the lion-throne and royal seat, set up the great white umbrella, and arranged the parasol, conch, and right-turning shell, all completed according to the royal command.
