This is the eighty-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Rama beginning the return toward Ayutthaya, Phiphek joining the march, the sea-road being cut open again, Banlaikan coming from the naga realm after learning of Thotsakan's death, and Hanuman intercepting him first in buffalo form and then as himself.

Rama Sets Out and Hanuman Meets Banlaikan

Then Phra Chakkrit, whose power outshone the sun, after victorious Matali had returned to the heavenly city, spoke.

He gave gracious command: "Listen, Phiphek, yaksha king. Since I led the armies here, we have waged war and struck down enemies for a long time, until the fierce yaksha host, the thorn and obstruction of the earth, has been ended. Now I will return to the great city of Ayutthaya, my royal home. I gave a pledge to my two royal younger brothers when I accepted the truth of my father, the lord who raised me. When fourteen years are complete I must return to govern the people. If I do not arrive at the appointed time, radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut will run into the fire and end their lives. The three royal mothers will suffer and weep in grief. The pledged time is now near. I must hurry and arrive within the fourteen years."

Then Phiphek the yaksha king heard Phra Chakri's command, joined his hands, and answered: "Your servant asks to follow the diamond-disc lord of the three worlds, so that I may serve beneath your feet until you reach the royal city."

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard the younger brother of the twenty-armed king and spoke: "Find the auspicious time for marching, by day, hour, and lunar date, so that blessing and well-being may come to the powerful monkey host."

Then Phiphek, skilled in understanding, received the command of the lord of the three worlds and calculated according to the treatises.

He bowed his head and reported to the king, the crown of the world: "Tomorrow at dawn, the Moon enters Pisces. The Sun is joined in element with Jupiter. That omen is wholly good, but Rahu the asura looks upon it, and I see a blemish and harm connected with the Moon. It foretells that an enemy, a single fierce and deluded fighter, will follow through the forest path and press an attack."

Then Phra Chakkrit, whose fame and power spread everywhere, heard Phiphek the astrologer and gave command: "Even if a royal enemy follows to fight and strike us, I do not fear that common one's hand. I will destroy him and end his life. As for you, if you go with me, appoint the loyal and faithful solar-line yakshas to guard the city of Lanka." Having spoken, he ordered the son of the Sun, the mighty one: "Prepare the armies and the monkey kings, all together."

Then diligent Sukhrip and Phiphek received the command, bowed, and separated to arrange the troops.

Sukhrip arranged the monkey force, both the Chomphu and the Khitkhin armies, into the procession for Phra Chakri's royal march. Mighty Angkhot commanded ten samut of troops as the vanguard. Behind him came the glorious younger brother, with fifteen samut of royal soldiers. Twenty-seven samut of monkeys and the eighteen crowned commanders stood in the victorious formation around the four-armed lord. The son of the Sun himself commanded fifteen samut of battle-seasoned monkeys, marching behind the royal army. Vayu's brave son commanded ten samut of powerful troops as the rear guard, holding the end of the army. All was inspected and completed according to the register.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king, when he arrived at Lanka, gave command. He appointed Paowanasura the kumbhanda, wise and brave, to command the demon troops and guard the royal palace of Lanka. Then he levied five samut of troops, all armed and ready, to follow Phra Chakra to the city of Ayutthaya. He prepared the divine jeweled royal pavilion-car, fit for a universal emperor, together with secondary and attendant chariots in their appointed order. Then he had Suwannakanyuma, beloved Trichada, dear Benchakai his daughter, and lovely Chanthawadi mount the splendid victory chariots. The procession moved to join the avatar's army at the flower garden.

Then radiant Phra Kritsanurak, with the two royals who shared his life, came to the bathing place.

The three royals bathed and refreshed their bodies. Jeweled sprinklers scattered water like rain. Fragrant perfumes, mixed with gold dust and pollen, were poured over them. Phra Harirak and Phra Lak of the solar line put on patterned trousers, garments with branching kanok and Garuda designs, gold bright against green and red grounds. The lady wore purple silk with floating golden medallions. The two princes wore decorated side-cloths and trailing cloths set with bright ruby patterns; the lady wore a colored brocade breast-cloth, with jewels shining upon her bosom. Each wore carved breast-jewels, emerald directional plates, armlets, naga-shaped bracelets, blood-red gem rings, radiant jeweled crowns, and pearl-studded ear ornaments. Beautiful was the form of Phra Chakri; beautiful was beloved Phra Lakshmi; beautiful was Phra Lak his younger brother, like gods descending from heaven to earth.

The three royals proceeded gracefully, all equally splendid, their hands moving with swan-like beauty as they came to the ornate platform.

Phra Hariwong and Lady Sida mounted the shining great royal pavilion-car, while the powerful younger brother mounted his handsome chariot. When the auspicious hour arrived and the sun shone clear, the full army was ordered to depart from the asura garden.

O jeweled pavilion-car, prosperous, bright, and glittering in the sky, radiant like the chariot of the sun, as if drops of heaven had fallen and spread upon the earth. The rays of Phra Lak's chariot struck his face and lit the floor of the air, like the moon moving beside the sun, two lights shining over the world. Rows of tiered parasols, flags, streamers, and high insignia gleamed. Strings of jewels hung from the royal regalia, scattering rainbow light. Attendant chariots and secondary cars lined the way. Gongs called out with pipes; music sounded deep and sweet; drums beat in procession. The escorting army, fierce in battle, shouted until all trembled. They urged the great host onward, crossing by the road that had been made.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king, when he reached the shore of the Ganga, bowed and reported to Phra Chakri: "This road that was made across the ocean for the war and the destruction of the yaksha host is a dam that closes the waterway and blocks boats and ships. May Your Majesty cut it apart by the power of your sacred arrow, making it deep and wide as a sea-road, as it was in ancient times. Let this deed be famous and your glory continue in ages to come. Lord of the sky, show mercy."

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, heard Phiphek and saw the truth of everything. He took up the Phlaiwat arrow, powerful enough to shake the earth, set it to the string, drew swiftly, and shot with royal power.

The arrow went out and cleared the stone road by the power of Phra Chakkrit. It shattered and broke it apart in every direction with a roaring sound. The ocean foamed in great waves, crashing against the shore in turmoil. A broad passage opened through the water all the way to the island of Lanka.

When the clearing of the great road was finished, he sent the vanguard troops onward in royal procession along the forest path.

After they had traveled for many days and nights and had passed beautiful Mount Hemathiran, evening came and the sunlight softened. They reached a clean and pleasing place, level ground spread with soft sand and fragrant with flower pollen. He ordered the army to stop and descend at the edge of the great forest. Then he commanded Pali's younger brother, the wise and brave one: "This forest is pleasant, with fruits and strange streams. The asuras and monkeys will not lack supplies. Set up a pavilion in the wood beneath the trees beside the stream."

Then the asura and monkey warriors received Sukhrip's command and hurried out in busy disorder.

Some cleared the place, leveled the earth, and dug holes. Crowding together, they cut and trimmed great trees, carried them, and set up the victory pavilion with its outer and inner parts complete. There were bathing places, dining places, an audience hall, platforms, and railings. Guard-halls for sword-bearers lined left and right; halls for counselors were placed in order. Each army camped by its own corps, in rows to left and right. Gate posts, fire stations, and watches were inspected and completed according to the command of the four-armed lord.

Then Phra Kritsanurak, bearer of the bow, with beautiful Lady Sida, moved gracefully up into the splendid pavilion.

He lowered himself upon the throne-seat with his beautiful chief queen. At dusk, when the sun's light was fading, the moon shone bright through the clouds. The wind blew softly, carrying the fragrance of flowers; perfume filled the whole pavilion and delighted the breath. The calls of cicadas and insects sounded like clear music and pipes. Phra Hariwong and the noble lady fell asleep in the night.

Now the story turns to Banlaikan the yaksha, son of ten-faced Thotsakan, born from Lady Kala Akki. When he was a little more than five years old he was already fierce, bold, and brave. The naga king, his maternal grandfather, had asked to take the asura and raise him in the naga realm until he grew strong. He learned the arts swiftly and became dear to the old king's eyes and heart in every way. One day, lying on a jeweled pearl couch with a beautiful naga lady beside him, the demon prince slept deeply.

He dreamed that a four-armed god, holding a sharp sword, came in, broke the asura's neck, cut open his soul, and carried it away. Startled, he woke at once, his body burning as if struck by an arrow. He thought of his father and sighed in grief. "What can this be? I do not know. This dream-omen is strange and wonderful. To whom will it happen?" Having thought this, he went to bathe, dressed himself with shining ornaments like the moon, left the jeweled chamber, and went up to wait upon his grandfather.

He bowed his head at the feet of the righteous king and said: "Your grandson asks leave to go up to the city of Lanka, to visit my honored father and the mother who bore me. It will not be long, only seven nights. Great king, show mercy."

Then Thao Kala Naga, lord of nagas, heard his royal grandson and stroked his back and face with affection. "If you will go visit your father in the great city of Lanka, let it be as you wish. But do not stay long. Hurry back to help guard the kingdom. I have set my hope on my beloved grandson, to make you the crown and pillar of the naga people."

Then Banlaikan, yaksha of the solar line, received the command of his royal grandfather, bowed, and took leave. Finished, he descended from the palace, bright and splendid in the sky, and came gracefully to the bathing place.

He bathed and refreshed his body. Water poured like rain. He wore divine fragrance mixed with flower pollen. His trousers had lion-patterned borders; his garments bore sevenfold designs and branching vines. He put on splendid clothing, a carved breast-jewel, patterned chains, golden directional plates with curled dragons, shining emerald armlets, rings with diamond settings, a radiant jeweled crown and ear ornaments, and golden flower garlands bright with the nine gems. He belted on the great diamond mace and left the jeweled palace on foot.

Then he displayed his power. The roar shook every direction. With swift strength he split through the earth and rose up.

He came to the royal city of Lanka just as the sun was turning down behind the mountain. The asura changed his bearing and looked along both sides of the road. He saw no men or women rejoicing, no festival noise as before. The whole city was silent and lonely, its soldiers and people still. The sounds of piphat, gongs, drums, songs, strings, and music were gone. His wonder and suspicion multiplied, and the asura stood astonished in all his body. "This strange disorder may be like my dream-omen. I must secretly go to my mother and ask the truth clearly." Having thought this, he hid beside the gate, bowed to mighty Brahma, controlled his mind, and concealed his senses.

At once he made his shadow disappear, so that no one saw the yaksha's body. He entered the splendid residence and went up to wait upon his mother.

Then lovely Lady Kala Akki sat above a splendid jeweled couch. Looking aside, she saw her son. She was filled with joy beyond measure, yet thought of her beloved husband and her heart failed. She ran with all her strength, embraced her child, and began to grieve.

For a while she could hardly speak. Then the demon lady steadied herself, took the hand of her beloved son, and brought him up onto the splendid jeweled couch.

Then brave Banlaikan, when he saw his royal mother grieving in such strange distress, bowed down at her feet. His heart burned as if struck by a discus; tears filled and covered his face. The yaksha lord asked: "Why is it so, royal mother, that you suffer, grieve, and weep? Where has my honored father gone? I will go wait upon his feet."

Then lovely Lady Kala Akki sobbed as she told the matter: "Gem of my eyes, my life itself, your honored father, the lord who gave you birth, has now met royal enemies, two brothers named Rama and Lak. They led monkey armies across the great ocean to attack and killed the solar-line yakshas by their mighty power. Your uncle Phiphek joined the humans and forest monkeys; Rama gave him the city to govern and rule the people. Now the two human brothers and the glorious monkey troops have lifted camp and gone back to Ayutthaya. Three nights and three days have passed."

Then Banlaikan of the solar line heard his mother's lament and grew choked with grief, stunned in all his body, as if the lord of death had come to cut off his head. Tears flowed over the asura's face, and he cried out in mourning.

"O my honored father, I did not know that a great war had arisen. I came intending to wait upon your lotus feet, remembering your royal kindness. How could the crowned lord of mighty power lose his life and body by the hand of low enemies throughout the three worlds? It is wasted strength that I was born in the solar line of yakshas if I cannot repay my father's kindness like a man of warrior birth. Whatever happens, let me at least fight the two human brothers. If I die, I will not regret my life; that is better than living on." Speaking and weeping, he embraced his mother's feet, grieving as if his life and awareness would end.

When his grief eased, the kumbhanda raised his joined hands above his head. "Beloved mother, your son asks leave to follow and destroy the enemies. Is there any excellent weapon of my radiant father still remaining? Your son asks for it, so that I may go to win the fight."

Then Lady Akki, young and lovely, heard him and was alarmed, as if someone had torn away her life. Sobbing, she tried to restrain her beloved son, gem of her eyes: "Those two human brothers have power that has subdued all ten directions. They are supreme, victorious kings, skilled in the science of the bow. Your powerful father, Kumbhakan, Intharachit, all the solar-line kin, and all their radiant allies were mighty in power, yet none who went against them escaped with life. If you go in pride and fierce arrogance to follow and kill them, how will you return alive? Now that I have seen your face, my grief has eased. Do not pursue them into battle. Dear child, listen to your mother."

Then Banlaikan, mighty yaksha, heard her and his resentment multiplied. Anger burned like fire in the sky. "Why is it like this, royal mother, that you fear humans and forest monkeys? I am a male warrior by birth. My power can subdue all three realms. I will follow them, kill them, and fight them to the end. I will destroy the entire victorious army so that it satisfies my heart, and so repay the kindness of the father who gave me birth, making my honor known in the earth. I will not obey your words."

Then lovely Lady Kala Akki saw her beloved son raging in anger. Her heart closed in grief; tears flowed down her face. The lovely lady could not oppose him. She took up the victorious sacred arrow and gave it to her son. "This arrow belongs to supreme Brahma, powerful and radiant like corrosive fire. He gave it to your honored father, whose glory none in the ten directions could withstand. Take it to fight the two humans and the forest monkeys. May you triumph over the fierce royal enemies. Gem of my eyes, go in safety."

Then Banlaikan of the solar line received the arrow and his mother's blessing. He bowed with joined hands at her lotus feet, took leave of his royal mother, left the great palace, displayed his victorious power, and flew leaping across the ocean.

When he reached the shore of the sea, the asura descended onto the great road and followed the footprints of the powerful army, hurrying onward in anger.

Then the lord of the three worlds, who overcomes the world, came out to the front of the pavilion, surrounded by the monkey commanders and by the solar-line yakshas, who thronged around the bow-bearing lord like stars around the stainless moon in the sky. Then he heard a mighty sound shaking the belly of the snowy mountains, like the wind of time destroying the world, with dust darkening the dawn.

He gave royal command and asked the great astrologer: "This mighty sound, asura, what event can it be?"

Then Phiphek the yaksha king received the command of the powerful lord and considered according to the moment, the time, and the yaksha signs. When he had finished, he bowed his head and reported to the Garuda-bearing lord: "The sound that roars and shakes the earth and sea is Banlaikan, fierce in power, son of ten-faced Thotsakan, born from Lady Kala Akki. He has great strength. The naga king, his grandfather, asked to keep him in the netherworld, where he performed rites and steeped his body in herbal water for seven years and seven months until he became skilled and exceedingly brave in power. He came to visit his honored father, learned that Your Majesty had killed the yaksha king and ended his life, and became violently angry. Boasting of his courage in war, he follows alone in arrogance, without an army. Considering the hour, I see that he will die at midday. Let mighty Hanuman go fight him and kill him."

Then Phra Chakkrit, whose power outshone the sun, heard Phiphek the demon lord and gave command: "Listen, brave son of Vayu, mighty in power. Go kill the asura and cut off his head at once."

Then Hanuman, the victorious warrior, received the command of Phra Chakri, bowed with joined hands, and hurried away.

He came by his strength for one yot and reached a line of mountain slopes. The wise monkey thought, "I will test the power of that wretch." As he thought, he looked and saw a broad pond beside the road. He raised his joined hands to the lord of the three worlds, focused his mind, and recited a powerful spell.

By the force of the expert mantra, he was transformed into a great buffalo, sunk in the mud with his whole body, keeping his eyes fixed while he waited for the asura.

Then Banlaikan the yaksha walked cutting through the forest, following the trail of the powerful monkey army.

Glancing over, he saw a wild buffalo lying sunk in the great pond. He asked: "Hey, fierce forest buffalo, have you seen two male humans leading the whole host of their army? How many days ago did they go from here? Tell me the truth."

Then Vayu's son, brave and mighty in wisdom, heard him and answered deceptively: "I have been in distress a long time. I fell into the mud and am nearly at the end of life. Help lift me from this difficult place, and then I will tell you the matter, asura."

Then Banlaikan of the solar line did not perceive the trick and was pleased. The asura went straight down.

He braced both feet against the firm earth, set his shoulder beneath the great buffalo, and pushed with all his power until sweat flowed from every hair.

He lifted and pushed many times, until the yaksha had spent all his strength, but the buffalo did not move as he imagined. It was heavier than lifting the Himawan mountain. His mind and heart weakened; he opened his mouth, panting, and his body shook. Out of power and ideas for lifting, the kumbhanda climbed back up.

Then brave Hanuman, the great warrior, saw his strength and thought to himself: "This one is going to die. I will trick him into lifting once more and weaken the yaksha's strength further." Then he called out deceptively: "Look, victorious demon lord, you do have power, but you lack judgment. When you were tired enough to die, you did not stop and rest. You are also hungry, yet you came and spent your strength by sheer force. How could it succeed, demon lord? It is useless bodily trouble. Go bathe and cleanse yourself, rest in comfort and happiness. Then, even if I were heavier than this, I would surely rise as you intend."

Then the son of ten-faced Thotsakan heard words that agreed with his spirit. The asura saw the truth of everything and was joyful beyond measure, his face bright as the moon. He left the shade of the banyan tree and went down to the water landing.

He scooped water in both hands and drank; then he washed away the yaksha's grime. When the mud was gone from all his body, the asura returned.

He went back and stopped to rest, sitting beneath the thick-leafed banyan whose close shade blocked the sunlight. The wind blew pleasantly. Then he rose, displayed his power, and made the ten directions quake with thunder. Leaving the shade of the banyan, he went down to the fierce buffalo.

He seized the buffalo's body with strong power, shifting, pulling, setting his shoulder beneath it, bracing his feet, and turning quickly.

After wrestling, lifting, shouldering, and pushing many times, he brought it out of the mud. The asura rejoiced, clapped his hands, and made a tumult.

Then he asked in arrogant pride: "Hey, animal buffalo, how many days ago did the human who led the army go along this road?"

Then the son of Phra Phai, strong and mighty, heard the kumbhanda's speech. He pricked up his ears to test him and moved playfully, arching his tail, running in curves, pawing the earth, and tossing with his horns. Then he called: "Powerful lord, you have done me kindness today. If I stayed silent, it would not be right; I must repay the yaksha's kindness. This Phra Rama is Phra Chakri, Garuda-rider. Phra Lak is the naga couch from the Ocean of Milk. They led a powerful monkey host to remove wickedness in Lanka. Do not be arrogant or proud. Go back now; then your life will not end. Listen to my words, kumbhanda."

Then mighty Banlaikan heard him, ground his teeth, clapped his hands in laughter, and cried out: "Hey, hey, animal-born thing! Where did you learn these matters? You praise humans no bigger than spider threads, saying Narai has come from Vaikuntha. Your words are wicked. If you were not an animal, I would destroy your life and satisfy myself, low wretch."

Then Hanuman, victorious monkey lord, heard the asura's words and called back: "What I said is true. I have not lied to you. Out of mercy I warned and restrained you; why are you angry with me? If you will not listen and insist on fighting, come test yourself against me, an old buffalo. If you can win over me, then follow and fight them."

Then Banlaikan the yaksha heard and grew angry like fire. The asura cried back: "Hey, malformed buffalo! You do not know my kindness. I helped you, so your life was saved; how dare you set your heart to match power with me, who have force enough to subdue the heaven of Dusit? Your life will end because of your wicked arrogance." Having spoken, he brandished the bow and displayed fierce power, leaping in to seize the buffalo swiftly.

With one hand he bent back a horn and braced his foot, holding close so it could not get away. He struck with the victory bow again and again without lowering his hand.

Then Hanuman, in buffalo form, arched his tail and rushed into battle, wrestling in close combat with the demon lord.

He struck with his forehead, crushed with the sweep of his horns, threw him by force, gored and wheeled in battle, and sprang up to kick the asura in the chest.

Then mighty Banlaikan did not wait or hold back. The yaksha pressed in and grappled close.

He ran and leapt onto the buffalo's back, striking hard with yaksha strength. He hit the buffalo's body many times and stamped again with his feet.

Then Hanuman, in buffalo form, was hurt all over by the bow. He lost ground in the fight. He dodged and gored in confusion, but he could not kill the kumbhanda. Holding back, he stilled himself and thought: "If I remain a forest buffalo like this, I am not quick in the art of battle. I will pull away from the yaksha, return to monkey form, and then I can kill the asura." Having thought this, he did not press the attack. Still bound in battle with the yaksha, he turned away from the asura and ran circling into the forest.

He came to a mountain rise beside the great road, changed back into a forest monkey, and waited with his mind fixed on the kumbhanda.

Then powerful Banlaikan saw the buffalo run into the forest. He rushed after it in pursuit.

When the buffalo's footprints ended, he glanced up and saw a monkey at the cliff overhang. He asked angrily: "Hey, hey, forest monkey, did you see that low buffalo pass this way, or not? I followed its tracks and now they have disappeared. My doubt has multiplied beyond measure."

Then Hanuman, victorious and brave, heard him and answered the asura: "What is your name, lord demon? Whose line and family are yours? Where is your homeland and city? Why do you ask about the forest buffalo? What do you want, asura? Tell me first. Then this monkey will tell you. If not, I, who am wise, cannot know the asura's business."

Then Banlaikan the yaksha heard the forest monkey speak in bold arrogance. He thought, "This one is crude and daring. If I do not tell my lineage, the work of my pursuit will be spoiled." Having thought, he called back: "Hey, brave forest monkey, I am the son of the lord of Lanka. My name is Banlaikan. I come from the naga city of the netherworld, radiant, powerful, and strong. I have followed the human brothers for many days, hoping to kill them and bring them to ruin. I met a malformed buffalo fallen in the mud of a great pond. I went down and saved its life; otherwise it would have died. When I asked about the two humans, it instead invited me to fight. It was defeated by my power and fled. I followed it here to end its life."

Then Vayu's son, strong and powerful, heard the kumbhanda's words, clapped his hands mockingly, and answered: "Hey, listen, asura. What you say is not right. The forest buffalo spoke to you from mercy, with a loyal and honest heart, hoping to save the yaksha's life. Why were you angry? I find it very strange. Those two crowned lords have battle power that subdues the three worlds. You, demon lord, would follow them in fierce arrogance? Your father has already had all ten heads cut off and scattered by the glorious arrow. All his kin and troops were killed in heaps by the monkeys. I am only a servant guarding the circle around Phra Harirak. I lagged behind and did not keep up. Come fight me, kumbhanda. If you defeat me, then hurry on to fight the great army." Having spoken, he leapt down and stood near the asura.

Then mighty Banlaikan heard the small monkey's words and grew angry like the fire at the end of the age. "Look at this animal, arrogant, coarse, and deluded. Your body is no bigger than a fly. I will cut you apart so that you are not even enough to stick in a crow's throat." Speaking, he ground his teeth, stamped his feet, roared like thunder, brandished the powerful arrow, and rushed to kill the monkey.

อันซึ่งถ้อยคำมหิงส์ไพร / บอกให้ด้วยความเมตตา
