This is the eighty-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Hanuman discovering the sand-trick that makes Banlaikan killable, Banlaikan's death, Rama's return through Khanthamat, Khitkhin, and the Godavari, the meeting with Vasistha and Vishvamitra, Kukhan's arrival, and the Ayutthaya crisis as Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut prepare to keep their fire-vow.

Banlaikan Killed and the Return Nears Ayutthaya

Then mighty Banlaikan saw the fierce forest monkey, whose body was vast and majestic, entirely pure white, bold and powerful in bearing, with earrings, diamond-like hair, jeweled fangs, and splendid garlands. Angry, grinding his teeth, the kumbhanda answered bravely: "Look at this common creature, malformed animal by birth. I thought you were a buffalo and pitied you, lifting you out of the mud. You turn back with lies and evasions, becoming a wild monkey and coming to fight. What are you worth, hairy-faced thing, that you should withstand my lion-power? In a moment you will be crushed in my hands by my power." Having spoken, he drew the arrow and set it to the string, aiming to destroy the glorious monkey. He pulled with force and shot with asura power.

That victorious arrow made its power manifest. Arrows filled the field beyond counting, ringing with a terrible sound as they pursued and surrounded the monkey.

Then brave Hanuman, skilled in battle, leapt and seized them with both hands, gathering up the asura's arrows. Having caught them, he broke them and tossed them playfully, dancing and calling mockery at the yaksha: "Why not shoot again? Why stand still and delay?" Then he displayed his power until the ten directions shook in fear, brandished the diamond trident like flame, and rushed in to seize the asura.

Wherever he grabbed, his hold slipped loose. He could not find a place to seize the yaksha. The whole body was slick and slippery, and the monkey lord grew even more furious.

Then mighty Banlaikan the yaksha received, blocked, and parried, and the asura rushed to seize the monkey.

They turned and fought in battle, slipping aside with seasoned strength. Banlaikan struck with the great mace, hitting the monkey's body many times.

Then Hanuman, victorious and brave, was not hurt in his body, but the monkey lord considered: "I am a soldier of the avatar lord. I have killed asura hosts until their bodies lay everywhere, but none was like this Banlaikan. What is his power? Every time I rush to seize him, he slips loose like slime in water. Phiphek said he had performed a rite and soaked his body in herbal water, but I did not ask clearly how to kill the asura. I will hurry secretly to radiant Emerald Mountain and ask Thitsaphai Muni. He should know the matter." Having thought this, he raised his joined hands to supreme Phra Isuan, focused his mind, and recited the excellent sacred spell.

At once another monkey appeared, displaying battle power enough to shake the earth, and stayed to fight in his place, while Hanuman himself flew off immediately.

When he reached the hermitage hall, he joined his hands and bowed at the feet of the rishi. He reported: "Phra Chakri commanded me to destroy an asura named Banlaikan, mighty son of ten-faced Thotsakan. His body is washed in herbal medicine. When I seize him, he slips loose. How, teacher, can I destroy his life? You who are wise, forgive me and show mercy."

Then great Rishi Thitsaphai heard the monkey's speech and understood by wisdom. He reached out, picked up dust and sand, and scattered it before him. Then he deliberately spoke: "Hey, powerful monkey, it is not fitting for me to tell how you may destroy the kumbhanda. I am an ascetic; my mind is set only on deep meditation."

Then Vayu's son, brave and mighty in wisdom, understood the teacher's device, bowed his head in reverence, and flew back.

When he reached the battlefield, he descended from the sky. He released the powerful spell, and the illusory form vanished. The monkey lord took up dust and sand, flung it against Banlaikan's body, and rushed in swiftly to seize and fight him.

Then Banlaikan the yaksha, when the monkey had scattered dust and sand upon him, felt it stick across his body. The herbal water no longer made his body slick and slippery. The demon lord was startled, as if someone had torn away his life. Then, ashamed for his face and honor, the yaksha grew angry and rash. "I too am a brave male warrior. It is not right to fear his hand. Even if I die, my honor will remain and be known beneath the sky." Having thought this, he swung his powerful club and rushed to seize the monkey.

They struck and stabbed each other in confusion. Each was brave and skilled in battle, taking turns without lowering the hand, fighting and wheeling back and forth.

Then Vayu's son, brave and mighty in wisdom, blocked and parried the asura, pressed in, and fought to kill him.

With one foot he stepped on the yaksha's knee and sprang into battle. With his hand he seized the yaksha's mace-weapon. Turning and grappling in a single move, the monkey lord stabbed the kumbhanda. The asura fell to the ground. Hanuman leapt and planted his foot firmly on his chest, brandished the diamond trident, and hacked him until his life ended by that power.

Then he cut off the demon lord's head with the sharp divine trident, flew through the clouds, and returned to the army's resting place.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the radiant king, offering Banlaikan the asura's head in the midst of the monkeys.

Then Phra Chakkaeo of the solar line, bearer of the bow, saw the head of the twenty-armed king's son. The king rejoiced because the deed matched his thought, as if he had gained a divine treasure in the Dusit heaven. His face shone with gladness, and the mighty lord praised Hanuman: "It was not wasted that you were born son of Phra Phai. You are clever, wise, and brave. Wherever I send you, the royal work is accomplished. This merit of yours is very great. Even if I gave you the whole earth as a kingdom and made you crown of the people, it would not equal the reward for your loyal service, killing yakshas from the beginning of the war." Having spoken, he invited his chief queen and beloved younger brother to descend from the pavilion and mount the shining royal car.

He ordered the army to move. Yakshas and monkeys, small and great, shouted fiercely and hurried into the wooded mountains.

The lord pointed for the lady to see the flocks of birds: doves settling on saraphi trees, nori birds at their nests, parrots speaking in the ket trees, hornbills flying among the khlai, herons on yang branches, pheasants in the rattan, egrets stepping over peacock crests, swans gathering in groups on hiang trees, owls peering from mok branches, mynas in the inthanin, koels flying to the wa trees, partridges on acacia tops, orioles at the mukman, wild fowl in kae flowers, turtle-doves calling on khoi trees, salikas chattering together, chakphrak birds turning to lamphu, peacocks dancing their tails in the yang trees, and other birds settled everywhere. The lord pointed and invited the lady to look, then urged the royal march onward.

When they reached Khanthamat mountain, fragrant with the pollen of flowers, he told his chief queen: "Following you, I came to this place. Indra sent Vishnukam to bring royal ornaments to me. Here I laid aside the ascetic form and stayed for many days. Phraya Sukhrip, powerful in battle, offered the monkey armies. The Chomphu troops also joined, and the two cities came together, seventy-seven samut in count, all powerful, mighty, and brave. Then I marched to follow you and destroy the race of the twenty-armed asura." Speaking, he hurried the royal army past Khanthamat mountain, traveled through the forest, and drew near the city of Khitkhin.

Then glorious Nilaphat learned that Phra Chakri had destroyed the asura host and returned to the frontier of Khitkhin. The monkey lord rejoiced greatly and led monkey soldiers out to receive the four-armed lord.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage, full of gladness, and also bowed to powerful Phra Lak and beautiful Lady Sida.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant and blessed, saw Nilaphat come and was glad. The king hurried the army onward.

Then Sukhrip, understanding well, bowed his head and reported to the king: "May Your Majesty show mercy. Please go to Khitkhin so the monkey and yaksha armies may rest from weariness and aching bodies. After that, the army may march on."

Then Phra Chakrarat, jeweled bearer of the bow, heard powerful Sukhrip and ordered the army to move.

When they reached the vast palace dwelling, radiant with bright gems, he had the army halt and stay in the great Moon Field.

Then lovely Dara, heavenly maiden, learned that the Garuda-bearing lord had returned with the whole host. He had stopped before the royal ground, and the young lady rejoiced beyond measure. She led the women out to receive Phra Chakri.

When they arrived, they crawled to the splendid jeweled victory car, bowed their heads, and offered joined hands. The queen looked up and gazed closely. She saw powerful Phra Hariwong, more beautiful than a god in Dusit, his face bright and radiant like a beautifully worked golden image. The form of his chief wife was more beautiful than any heavenly woman, delicate, luminous, her face like the stainless moon. Her form, bearing, elegance, gestures, and manners were all beautiful, as if she had floated from heaven to earth, fit to be the crown of women, fit to serve beneath the feet of radiant Phra Narai like gold receiving a jewel, delight of the three worlds. Then Dara gazed at Phra Lak, whose face was like a divine drawing, whose yellow-gold skin shone, excellent in all marks. The more she gazed, the more her eyes rejoiced. The young lady and all her attendants stared in wonder together.

Then the jeweled Phra Chakrarat saw lovely Dara come to bow in gladness. He spoke by royal command: "Listen, radiant young lady. Are you and the palace women living happily and well?"

Then young and lovely Lady Dara heard the king's command, bowed, and answered: "Your servant beneath the lotus feet lives in happiness and pleasure, as do all the women, by the power of Phra Chakra, who shelters our heads."

Then the radiant lord of the three worlds, when he had finished speaking with beautiful Lady Dara, commanded the son of Phra Kan, mighty Nilaphat: "You, whose face is prosperous, guard mighty Khitkhin until Phraya Sukhrip returns. Let no danger arise. Then return to your victorious monkey city."

Then brave-hearted Nilaphat, skilled in battle, heard the king's command, raised his joined hands, and answered: "If Your Majesty gives this monkey servant charge to guard the royal seat of Khitkhin, I will do according to the royal command, by Your Majesty's mercy."

Then powerful and brave Sukhrip bowed at the feet of the three royal lords and reported: "Please proceed gracefully to enjoy the blessed trees in the garden of King Pali, a place of enduring happiness."

Then Phra Chakrarat, jeweled bearer of the bow, heard the son of the Sun and was glad. He ordered the great left and right armies to move, while Sukhrip led the royal procession to the monkey garden.

When they arrived, he stopped all the troops and mighty soldiers. The bow-bearing lord, at the jeweled gomeda platform, invited the lady and his younger brother of the solar line to descend from the shining pavilion-car. The three royals walked gracefully into the flower garden.

They wandered among the rows of trees, thickly crowded with flowers: kalong, roses, ylang-ylang, screw-pine, kannika, lamduan, nom yong, nang yaem, champa, phancha, folded jasmine, spreading jasmine, maluli, nang nuan, and many kinds of blossoms; chong nang, chang nao, sao yut, tabaek sprays, lotus-like flowers, phikun, kaeo trees in rows, hibiscus, phut tan, champee, bunnak flowers bowing low, rak and la flowers interwoven in colors, mango, son, sok, saraphi, lychee, lamchiak, jik, chan, phumriang hanging like strings, longan, rang, yam, nom sawan, pring, prang, and anchun blossoms beside chaba. The lord plucked a great swan-flower and gave it to the beloved lady. The three royals were happy and at ease in the garden, delighting and rejoicing in their hearts.

Then he invited Phra Lak his younger brother and beloved Lady Sida to ascend the shining residence in Pali's garden.

Then the asura nobles, yaksha lords, monkey kings, and soldiers all rejoiced. They teased and played together in tumult. Some wandered off gathering fruit. Yakshas and monkeys seized it from one another in uproar, laughing through the victorious army. Some played hide-and-seek; monkeys ran and yakshas chased them. They clapped hands, feinted, and teased in confusion, while chiefs and soldiers enjoyed happiness together.

Then Phra Chakkrit, famed in every direction, at evening dusk invited beautiful Lady Sida to the auspicious sleeping place. They shared the couch in delight, leaning close together, and the sky-passing king fell asleep.

When the last watch of night passed, birds called with clear voices. Koels cried to hurry the sunrise, and the jeweled fowl's song was sweet. The wind blew softly, carrying fragrant pollen. Bees and black bees flew among the flowers and tasted their sweetness. The musicians sounded gongs and drums, and pipes rang gently and sweetly. The king woke from the splendid jeweled couch and awakened the noble lady.

He bathed, purified himself, and dressed, his face bright as the moon. Then he invited the heart-beloved lady to mount the splendid pavilion-car.

He ordered the monkey army to leave beautiful Khitkhin and enter the wooded mountains by the difficult path.

They traveled fifteen and a half yot and reached a vast great rang forest. He told young Lady Sida: "When I first left the hermitage with Lak my younger brother, I met Phraya Sadaiyu here. His whole body was wounded and suffering. He told me all news about you and then gave me the splendid ring. The bird died. That same day I performed his funeral, and then we followed after you." Having spoken, he hurried the troops, yakshas and monkeys, small and great, across streams and forest fords, traveling on through the Himavan.

When they reached the Godavari, he had the left and right armies stop around the hermitage grounds. Then he invited beautiful Sida and the younger brother of the solar line to descend from the pearl pavilion-car and go bathe in the stream. The royal lady followed him.

The three royals walked gracefully, beautiful beyond comparison, and descended to bathe in the great Godavari.

They admired the white, red, purple, blue, and green lotuses spread across the splendid water: some buds standing in rows as if carefully painted, some rising mixed among them and lifting their stalks, some stretching up and opening golden flowers, some scattering delicate petals. The wind brushed them softly, dropping pollen. The fragrance spread everywhere, and bees pressed into the soft dust. The lord chose and plucked open blossoms for his beloved lady. Glad and happy together, he pointed with his hand and invited her to look at the fish: golden phian swimming through the stream, maengphu fish leading their groups into the grass, krim fish swimming in crowds, soi-sa fish gliding to nibble algae, na-khon fish racing sideways, pla bu hiding beside lotus leaves. The lady looked and rejoiced, and the king was glad.

When bathing was finished, the three radiant solar-line royals came up from the river and returned to the splendid pavilion-car.

Then Phiphek, Sukhrip skilled in battle, Hanuman, powerful Nilnon, and the monkey and kumbhanda troops, when Phra Hariwong had mounted the shining pavilion-car, all the kings, chiefs, and soldiers invited one another down to play in the Ganga.

Some swam, some dove, all mixed together, monkeys playing with yakshas. They teased one another back and forth, happy and laughing in the river. Asuras gathered lotus pods to eat; monkeys seized them and ran away. Yakshas struck them with lotus stems, joking amid loud commotion.

When the asuras and monkeys, small and great, had finished playing in the water, all were glad in heart, and chiefs and soldiers came up together.

Then jeweled Phra Chakrarat rested from the heat and gave the troops relief beside the water landing. He was happy and at ease with his beloved chief queen and all the host, who recovered from the body's fatigue. The wind blew softly, easing the heat of the sun. Then he moved the chiefs and soldiers, turning toward the road.

They entered the wooded mountains and admired the forest animals: lions, buffalo, kirin, donkeys, serow leaping on cliffs, deer seeking mates in pairs, red bulls and strong bulls, wild cattle dancing and testing their strength, gaur roaming the forest, tigers following barking deer, antelope turning aside and fleeing, elephants leading female elephants, white elephants admiring one another, golden deer grazing and flicking their tails, narasingha creatures roaring, rabbits leaping in confusion, squirrels seeing one another and running, bears growling, rhinoceroses eating thick thorns, mouse deer hiding beside the road, and gibbons crying for their mates. As he admired them, he pointed out the animals to the beloved lady and hurried the army onward along the forest road.

They passed the hermitage of Sarabhanga and that of Rishi Bharadvaja, crossed the bank of the Satong river, and the king hurried the army onward.

When they came near the hermitage hall of Vasistha, the great teacher, he had the whole mighty host halt at the forest edge on the sandy rise.

Then the groups of ascetics saw yakshas and demons wandering everywhere and did not know that Phra Narai had returned. Each was alarmed beyond thought, for they had been used to fear yaksha power. Their awareness scattered; their bodies shook and faces went pale. Some grabbed water gourds and rosaries, feeling for their ascetic gear. Others seized palm-leaf fans and leapt down from their huts.

They ran into one another, falling and rising, and plunged into the thick forest to flee. Some hid behind mountain rocks and called to one another in loud confusion.

Then the great teachers Vasistha and Vishvamitra saw the forest rishis and ascetics startled and running in turmoil, just as when the Kakana demon had come and the yogis had scattered into the woods. Puzzled and doubtful in spirit, they hurried out from the hut.

They stopped, looked closely, and saw radiant Phra Chakkrit with Phra Lak and Lady Sida in the middle of the armies. Glad in heart, they called their disciples: "Powerful Phra Rama, the king, has returned."

Then Phra Hariwong, Lord Narai, invited chief Lady Sida and the younger brother who shared his life to descend from the glittering jeweled pavilion-car. Moving gracefully, they walked to the hermits' hut.

Each bowed his head in homage at the feet of the great ascetics. The three, beautiful in rank and glory, sat in descending order.

Then the two great teachers, strong in meditation, saw the three royal grandchildren and were filled with multiplied joy. They spoke gracious words: "Listen, radiant Phra Rama. You accepted truth for fourteen years, wore the ascetic form, and went walking in the forest. You have practiced discipline for a long time. How are your mind and body? Why have you left the vow? We are full of doubt beyond number. These armies, monkey and asura yaksha hosts, counted by samut and beyond sight, where did they come from?"

Then radiant jeweled Phra Chakrarat explained the matter to the sages: "At first your grandson went with the others from Mount Satkut to the broad Goda sea, stopped near the Ganga, and lived practicing restraint. One day the younger sister of ten-faced Thotsakan, a yaksha woman named Sammanakkha, changed form by asura power into a beautiful human woman and came to entice me, asking for union and love. I paid her no mind. She scratched and struck young Sida. My younger brother grew angry and punished her without ending her body: he cut off the demon woman's feet and hands and let her go in disgrace. Tri Sian, Thut, and Khon, her brothers, raised great armies, and I destroyed them all. Then Maricha came as a deer. Lady Sida desired it and sent me into the forest. Ten-faced Thotsakan then stole the lady and held her in the city of Lanka. Your two grandsons endured grief, wandering after our beautiful chief queen, and met Sukhrip, younger brother of King Pali. Through him we gained monkey troops, both the Chomphu and Khitkhin royal cities, all bold and brave in war. I left the vow, raised the armies, pursued Thotsakan, and destroyed him with all his kin and allies by the sacred arrow Your Reverence bestowed. When the war against the asura kumbhandas was finished, I raised the host and came back to the victorious city."

Then the great teachers and all the forest yogis heard the four-armed lord's command, saying that he had killed the asuras to the end of their line. Each was glad and joyful, smiling with lasting happiness, and spoke gracious words: "This time the three worlds will end their suffering and all the earth will be happy, because Your powerful Majesty has come to extinguish distress and cool the heart. May your life and glory increase for as many ages as can be counted, and may no danger come near as you rule splendid Ayutthaya."

Now the story turns to Kukhan, brave-hearted forest hunter. His mind remembered the avatar as if he were his own royal father. His companions had counted fallen leaves; fourteen falls had passed without error. He understood that the fourteen years were complete and that Phra Chakri would return. "I will go wait at the river crossing to receive the bow-bearing lord." Having thought this, he dressed himself, took his bow across his shoulder, and hurried away.

When he reached the meeting place, he climbed a great tree and blew a tube to summon the forest hunters according to their agreed signal.

Then the forest-hunter followers heard the important tube-call and came together at the head of the road.

Then Kukhan, brave great chief, when his men were assembled, rejoiced and hurried to the water landing.

He saw footprints of elephants and horses and the confused tracks of armies. Trees throughout the forest were broken and fallen, lying everywhere. He studied them for a while, looked carefully, and wondered: "Who came here, and from what place? My wonder is beyond measure. I will go listen at the hermitage of the great meditation-master. Then the matter will be clear." Having thought this, he went straight to the hut.

Glancing up, he saw monkeys and yaksha troops scattered through the forest, with shining jeweled chariots. He was greatly puzzled. "Where did yakshas and monkeys come from? I will ask the ascetic and make my heart clear." He went straight into the hall.

Then the monkey and yaksha soldiers saw the forest hunters coming noisily, all carrying guns with poisoned balls, walking straight into the hermitage of the supreme holy ascetic. Fearing they might be enemies, they rushed out and stood blocking the way, crying: "Where have you forest people come from? Why are you bold and proud, trying to enter the hut? Phra Chakra is speaking with the rishis. Hurry away now, or your lives will end."

Then Phra Narai of the solar line heard the loud noise, and the sky-passing king looked closely. He saw Chief Kukhan leading his dense crowd of men. Glad because it matched his thought, the mighty lord called him in.

Then Kukhan, understanding well, when he saw the victorious lord, ran at once in joy. He embraced the king's feet and reported: "I have been parted from your lotus feet for fourteen years and have not known happiness for even a moment. Today I have met the blessed lord, and my gladness is beyond measure." Having reported, he bowed to Lady Sida and to Phra Lak, the lovely younger brother.

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard the forest hunter's lament and gave royal command: "I practiced restraint in the vast Himavan and then had to go fight yakshas and demons, with hardship nearly to death. You stayed behind. Tell me the news: are the mother who gave me birth and my two glorious younger brothers living in peace?"

Then Kukhan, understanding well, heard the king's command, bowed, and answered: "The royal mother and the two glorious younger lords who stayed behind have lived only in grief, without happiness at any time. The ministers and people all suffer and grieve because they think of Phra Chakri by day and night."

Then Phra Chakkrit, whose power outshone the sun, heard Kukhan the hunter tell all the news. Thinking of his mother's kindness, he could hardly hold back grief. Tears filled the king's eyes, but he restrained them and spoke: "Listen, brave son of Vayu, mighty in power. You and wise Kukhan go quickly into the city. Report the news at the feet of my radiant royal mothers and to my two beloved younger brothers who share my life, so that they need not grieve and weep. I and my younger brother, with beloved Lady Sida, have returned from the forest journey and reached my teacher's hermitage hall."

Then Vayu's son, brave and mighty in wisdom, together with Kukhan the hunter, received the command with gladness. Each bowed his head at the feet of Lord Narai, left the hermitage hall, and hurried to the city of Ayutthaya.

Now the story turns to radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut. When the appointed fourteen years were complete and they did not see the four-armed Phra Chakri return, their hearts burned as if struck by arrows. Both grieved bitterly and spoke their sorrow to each other: "Now the fixed term is complete, and jeweled Phra Chakra, with Phra Lak and lovely Lady Sida, has not returned to the kingdom as promised. Let us enter the fire and end our lives. That is better than letting the three worlds accuse us of losing the truth of our vow." Having thought this, they proceeded gracefully down from the shining palace with their palace women and attendants, coming to the dwelling of the royal mothers.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the three royal mothers and reported: "These sons gave a truth-vow to our four-armed elder brother when we went to invite him back to his dwelling at Mount Satkut. It was a firm righteous pledge, and the gods all knew it. Now the fourteen years are complete, and Phra Chakri has not come. Your beloved sons ask leave to enter the fire and perish according to the pledge."

Then the three beloved royal mothers heard this as if their lives would end. Each lamented in grief.

"O gems of your mothers' eyes, why should you die? The truth-vow you pledged that day before your mothers was that your elder brother went into the Himavan forest wearing the form and conduct of a rishi, and when the fourteen years were complete he would return to the city as promised. But the monkey came and told us he had gone to war with yakshas on the island city of Lanka; you know that clearly, gems of our eyes. A war cannot be fixed by nights and days. If you two die, how could your mothers remain alive? When Rama and Lak return, they too will lose their lives. Wait and listen for three nights. Good or bad, news will come."

Then Phra Phrot and lord Phra Satrut listened to the three royal mothers. Tears filled their eyes, and they reported: "What Your Majesties say is very right, but your beloved sons cannot wait. We would rather die without regretting life than let the word of truth be lost. If our elder brother reaches the city, royal mother, please have mercy and tell the dust beneath his feet that these sons bowed and took leave. May the three royal mothers forgive whatever faults we committed in the past, and let no enmity continue. We entrust the solar-line family, the palace women, and all attendants, small and great, to your mercy. Please care for them and give them happiness and well-being."

Then the three royal mothers heard their beloved sons speak. It was as if their lives would die. Each struck her breast and wailed in grief. Each embraced the two beloved sons, grieving until they all fainted together.

Then radiant Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut saw the three beautiful royal mothers weep and fall silent. Startled out of their senses and unable to hold their bodies steady, each lowered his face and wept, fainting at the feet of the royal mothers.

Then the palace women of the inner quarters, left and right, together with senior ladies and attendants, saw the five beautiful royals weeping and lying still without moving. They were alarmed, shaking in confusion, and all cried out together, their voices loud in turmoil. It was like the age-ending wind blowing through a great rang forest; inside and outside all was disordered. Some women massaged and supported the royal feet on left and right. Some brought royal perfume and applied it at once to the five royals.

Then the three royal mothers, with Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, felt the cool perfumed water and heard the voices of the women. They recovered consciousness, clasped the two sons close, sobbed, and spoke: "The four of you were invited by gods and rishis assembled together, who called Vaikuntha down in hope of subduing common asuras in the Treta age, so that the world might gain happiness and peace. How could you now die? Whom would the three worlds rely upon? Do not doubt that your elder brother will return. Do not burn in heart. Dear hearts, listen to your mother's words."
