This is the eighty-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Rama's royal consecration in Ayutthaya, the divine and earthly celebration, the council that assigns rewards to Lak, Hanuman, Sukhrip, Phiphek, Ongkhot, Kukhan, and the monkey host, Hanuman's refusal of Ayutthaya as unfitting for him, and the founding of Nopburi by Rama's arrow and Vishnukarma's divine craft.

Rama's Consecration and Hanuman's City

Now the tale will speak of the lord of Tavatimsa heaven. He sat above his shining divine seat in the lasting celestial bower. He learned that the auspicious royal consecration would take place, that the white umbrella would be given to the bow-bearing lord, so that he would be crown and refuge of the people of Ayutthaya, continuing the solar line in place of his royal father. Now kings from every city, royal poets, ministers, brahmins, and ascetics were all assembled. "I must bring the mighty gods who dwell in the circles of the zodiac to preside over the consecration rite of the avatar."

When the lord of Mount Meru had thought this, the divine king gave command. He called the surrounding gods and the lovely celestial maidens, told them to bring the royal regalia and divine golden garments, and then they all flew down to mighty Ayutthaya.

They entered through the window, gods great and small, and took their places on bright seats in the splendid great palace.

Then the three royal mothers, when dawn had cleared and the sun's light had risen, saw the three-eyed lord arrive together with the surrounding gods. The young ladies were filled with joy, their faces bright like the moon. They gave royal command: "Look, beloved Rama, jewel of your mother's eyes and glory. Go bathe in the water and cleanse your body into gladness."

Then Phra Chakri, brave and wise, received the command of the noble royal mothers. The sky-passing lord went to bathe.

He bathed his body in flowing water from jeweled sprinklers, cold drops scattering like rain. He rubbed himself with fragrant perfumes, compounded like delicate gold from Indra's city. He put on trousers patterned with gems, floating round in kanok-vine designs. His robe had the border of flying swans and forms of kinnara gliding in dance. The side-cloth's trailing clusters were set with jewels; the moving cloth glittered with shining gems. Directional plates were finely worked, the breast-jewel layered with yellow gems and chains. A fresh golden belt clasped his body; diamond armlets were crossed with rubies. Golden bracelets wound like coiled naga, and rings with Garuda settings seemed to stir and fly. He wore the great jeweled crown, interset with pearls in every ear ornament, hanging garlands of golden flowers, and the art-bearing lord moved his hands gracefully toward the landing.

Then he mounted the golden vehicle, shining bright against the sky. The procession was mustered, spread thick on every side, all ready with joined hands in homage. Curved trumpets and foreign trumpets sounded together; drums of ceremony thundered. Processional ranks walked side by side, holding the route in ordered lines. High regalia stood in rows, with tiered umbrellas and peacock parasols glittering. Chamberlains held the royal weapons with joined hands, in rows before and behind the king. Sukhrip, Ongkhot, Hanuman, Phiphek the yaksha astrologer, and all eighteen crowned monkey lords of power walked beside Phra Chakri's great vehicle. The common troops wore white court robes with gold-threaded turbans, bright and splendid, moving by levels one behind another through Sanam Chan field.

When he reached the shining golden landing, the ministers bowed their heads in homage, crowding thick on every side. He removed the ornaments from his body, put on white garments, and walked gracefully up into the great consecration pavilion. His feet stepped on jackfruit leaves spread over the seat prepared for bathing. He turned his face and looked auspiciously toward the eastern quarter.

Then the four elder court priests, when the auspicious minute arrived, struck the victory gong as the signal. Lord Amarin blew the conch, and its sound shook and rolled. The musicians began together, filling the air with loud sound. The attendants opened the golden pipes, and perfumed water scattered like rain. Fragrance spread everywhere and fell from above onto Phra Chakri.

Then Vasistha and Vishvamitra, the rishis, poured the waters of the Five Rivers over him. The old brahmins then offered conch-water and jar-water, recited the Vedic verses as prescribed, turned away misfortune, and blessed Phra Chakra with lasting great auspiciousness.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, finished bathing, put on splendid ornaments, and walked up to the jeweled palace.

He lowered himself onto the royal lion-seat, beautifully spread with lion skin, beneath the shining white umbrella, in the midst of ministers and gods.

Then the thousand-eyed lord of Tavatimsa heaven offered the divine royal regalia, adorned with vast golden splendor. The officers of weapons offered the eight sharp weapons. Sumanthan, chief minister, offered the armies and forces. The treasurer offered the riches, rings, and radiant nine gems. The masters of chariots, elephants, and horses offered chariots, elephants, and steeds. The wise lord of royal speech offered the lovely palace women, sixteen thousand ladies in all, completing the twelve inner companies.

Then the chief priests and astrologers opened the bright jeweled auspicious trays and lit the shining victory candles. They kindled gem lamps and nine-gold lights, bright with radiance, and sent them to the solar-line king's lineage, hand to hand in unbroken order.

Round, round went the candles, circling from left to right. The old astrologers struck the gong three times, and the music of the ceremony rang out. Some scattered popped rice and flowers, offering victory with a loud swelling cry. They shouted until the city resounded, and the rishis chanted all together.

When the seven rounds were complete, according to the rite of strengthening the spirit, the priest extinguished the candles and waved the smoke before the mighty Garuda-mounted lord.

Then every kind of festival began. Performers played, danced, and moved in commotion, until all victorious Ayutthaya thundered.

Then the lord of great Mount Meru commanded the celestial women of heaven and the gods to take up the dance.

Then the gods and heavenly apsaras received the command of the crown of the gods and bowed with joyful hearts.

They joined one another in dancing as an offering, stepping, gliding, and shaping their gestures. They formed a line like swans in flight, wheeled right, crossed back, and turned again. Then they made circles, changed hands, and shifted into shoulder-high formations. Beside the ladies of heaven they reached and drew close, tangling together. The heavenly women shook them off, pushed away the hands, gave sharp sidelong looks, and bent away in coquetry. The gods intercepted and spread themselves to block them, then turned aside and danced in rows beside them.

Then the lovely apsaras danced, enticing and mingling with the gods, casting meaningful glances from their eyes. Seeing the gods circle right and press close, they bent aside and circled left, trailing away. Then they moved into the posture of horses playing polo, glancing and sidling along. When the young gods seized their hands, they shook them off and would not let them near. They made playful wiles and alluring gestures, teasing the divine lords. The gods and apsaras danced and sang with joyful hearts, offering this vast and splendid entertainment to the Garuda-mounted lord.

Then the men and women of the city all broke away to watch the gods and heavenly women dance in delight. The khon, theater, Mon dances, Chinese opera, puppets, wrestling, and cock-clapping in front of the halls were left deserted; no grown person stayed to watch. Only the small children ran about, punching and hitting one another in noisy play. Some quarreled, argued, and struck one another, and their brothers, sisters, fathers, and mothers paid no attention.

Then the thousand-eyed lord of Tavatimsa, together with the siddhas and gods who had come to perform the rite, saw that Phra Hariwong's consecration was complete. Each one rejoiced, took leave of the holy avatar, and by power returned to his own dwelling.

Then Phra Hariwong, radiant Narai, ruled the people and citizens in delightful Dvaravati. He possessed royal riches, land, and dwellings, with a hundred thousand attendants gathered before him. He lived in happiness like a city of gods, yet the sky-passing lord reflected in his heart: Phra Lak, mighty in battle, the monkey kings great and small, Sukhrip, victorious Hanuman, loyal Phiphek, and the monkey armies had endured and killed the yakshas. Their service was beyond a thousandfold. He must give them rewards fitting to their deeds.

When dawn came, the eastern light grew strong and bright. He bathed, put on shining ornaments, and the sky-passing lord came out to the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. The righteous king's royal heart was glad, his face bright like the moon among clouds. Ministers and elder counselors bowed their heads densely on left and right. Then he gave royal command: "Listen, Sumanthan, minister. Consult about the merit of the soldiers who destroyed the asura yakshas, in order by first, second, and third rank. What reward should each receive?"

Then Sumanthan, the chief minister, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

When he reached the council hall, the royal clan and ministers were assembled. He had the royal documents brought from the palace archive and called for wise Sattaphali. He took the record of those who had won merit by answering and breaking the great war. Then the kings, nobles, inner ministers, civil and military officers consulted together. Phra Lak, they said, had been loyal, following at the splendid feet, fighting and killing the asuras, faithful without regard for life. He had suffered Kumpakan's spear, the Nakabat, Intharachit's Brahmastra, the spear of Munphalam, and Thotsakan's spear, five times in all. He should rule Khara's city, the yaksha city of Romkhan, with full royal regalia, a hundred thousand palace women, and splendid wealth. Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, the younger brothers who had guarded the capital and kept the city from enemy danger, should be viceroys serving at radiant Phra Narai's feet, sharing the city's wealth equally with their brothers. Vayu's son had gone down to the netherworld after the fashioned avatar, killed Maiyarap and brought the righteous lord back. Then he volunteered for the lord, tricked the ten-faced yaksha, took his heart, and offered it beneath the king's feet, so that the lord of Lanka was destroyed. His other services were too many to count; he performed tasks as swiftly as the royal heart desired. He should rule half of Ayutthaya, under the name Phraya Anuchit Chakrit Phiphat Phongsa, and should receive a crown, splendid ornaments, a jeweled palace, riches, goods, attendants, and five thousand lovely women, all bright with auspicious beauty. Mighty Phraya Sukhrip had led the monkey army and offered it to Phra Narai. He had volunteered for Phra Narai, destroyed Thotsakan's umbrella, cut off Thapnasun's arms, and freed Phra Harirak from the kumbhanda's hand-ring. His merit was beyond a thousandfold. He should be named Phraya Waiwongsa Maha Suradet, radiant in glory, and rule victorious Khitkhin city with lovely Dara. He should receive the great royal chain, a jeweled crown, pearl earrings, city-valued rings, armlets, glittering bracelets, and all ornaments. Phiphek, younger brother of the ten-faced one, had been loyal at the bow-bearing lord's feet, a firm astrologer and battle-seer, revealing the stratagems for fighting the kumbhandas. He should be named Thao Thotsakhiriwong Phong Phromthirat and receive a divine crown and chain, ruling Lanka's realm. Ongkhot, son of Phali, brave and fierce monkey lord, had carried Phra Chakra's letter alone into Lanka, answered Thotsakan, and when the angry king sent four warriors to seize and kill him, had destroyed all four ministers instead. He also went to fetch Brahma's tray to receive Intharachit's severed head. Wherever he was sent he never failed, and victory came to the side of his allies. He should be named Phraya Intharanuphap, powerful at the front side of Khitkhin city, and receive a crown, earrings, blue gems, and shining jeweled chains. Chomphuphan, monkey lord, had been loyal to Phra Chakrit and told of the mighty medicines that saved Phra Lak's life. Nilanon had become the elephant that Hanuman rode when he served by ruining Montho's rite and killing Wirupak. Surasen the monkey lord had destroyed countless enemies; mighty Komut had killed Vaiyakasura; loyal Nilrat had commanded the monkey forces that made the road; Chomphuvarat the powerful bear had gone to confront Intharachit's rite. Sattaphali had kept the laws and the names of those whose service was right and wrong. Mighty Chaiyampawan had set his heart straight and carried the victory banner. It was fitting that Si Chomphuphan should govern great Pangtan and receive rings, crown, garlands, and shining jeweled chains with diamonds and cat's-eye gems. The mighty monkey Surasen should govern Satthasun city. Chomphuvarat, Nilrat, and Nilanon, all three of noble line, should be viceroys according to the service they had performed: Nilrat, the mighty one, as front lord of Atsadong city; Nilanon, brave-hearted, as viceroy of radiant Chomphu city; and powerful Chomphuvarat as front lord of Pangtan. They should receive chains, earrings, breast-jewels set with pearls, goods, attendants, vehicles, horses, chariots, and elephants. Chaiyam and Komut, both radiant, should be great ministers of left and right in Khitkhin city, and wise Sattaphali should be scribe. All the great monkey warriors who had served the discus-bearing lord and destroyed the asura yakshas should receive fitting rank and dignity, along with diamond turbans and goods, utensils of rose-gold and gold complete, silver and niello work, rolls of silk, and beautiful patterned cloth. When the chief minister had finished, he consulted victorious Hanuman, skilled on the battlefield: "You, master of war, what further point do you see?"

Then bold Hanuman, chief warrior, heard the counsel and answered: "I have a concern about Phra Lak, the younger brother. He has been upright, loyal, and faithful to Phra Chakri, his elder brother, without thinking of his own life. He strove through hardship, following the four-armed lord through the deep forest, until he fought in battle and destroyed the base asura line. In the fierce fighting he nearly lost his body and suffered sorrow and torment for fourteen long years. How could we send the royal younger brother far from radiant Phra Narai's feet, to rule Romkhan city, a borderland of yakshas? If a matter of royal business troubles the discus-bearing lord's lotus feet and he must punish anyone heavily, to whom shall we turn our faces for refuge? The royal younger brother is wise, skilled, and deeply understanding. It is proper that Phra Lak stay near Phra Chakra's feet in Dvaravati, as the front viceroy. Phra Phrot and mighty Phra Satrut, who guarded the city, should go dwell in Kekaya and maintain that kingdom as before, as heart, eyes, and hands for the royal grandfather's line. This is the point I object to. What do all of you think? If it is right and no one has misgivings, then report it to the royal younger brother. If Phra Lak of the solar line does not agree with my counsel, set it aside and report only the ministers' words to Phra Chakra."

Then the diligent chief ministers heard the son of divine Phai raise a fitting point about the division. They arranged the matter for the royal scribes, who wrote down the glorious monkey's words. When they finished, they all went to the place where Phra Lak was in attendance.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the younger brother of Phra Hariwong, bearer of the discus. They reported the whole counsel before him, together with Hanuman's objection.

Then brave and wise Phra Lak heard every point in full and immediately spoke: "The reward counsel for the soldiers has been arranged rightly. But as for sending me to dwell in Romkhan city, even if its wealth were vast as Tavatimsa heaven, even with a hundred thousand and six thousand palace women, if I were far from Phra Chakri's feet, I would have no desire for it. Hanuman's objection is like nectar poured over me. Sumanthan, when you report my part, take Vayu's son's counsel. Ask that I remain to serve beneath the royal feet until life ends."

Then the diligent court ministers received the command, bowed in homage, and went together to the shining royal hall.

Each bowed his head in homage to the radiant lord of the three worlds. Sumanthan the minister then reported the arranged counsel. But the three noble younger brothers and Vayu's son did not agree with it; he reported Hanuman's wise objection as well, complete in every point.

Then the lord of the three worlds, who had conquered every land, heard wise Sumanthan. The sky-passing lord gave royal command: "Let my three younger brothers act according to Vayu's son's counsel. Let Surakan, the mighty monkey, brave and fierce in battle, go rule Khara's city, the yaksha city of Romkhan. Let loyal Sornram, the brave and powerful monkey lord, be great viceroy to help in royal affairs, preserving justice, the ten royal virtues, upright conduct, and the royal line. As for Kukhan, forest hunter, he has rendered heavy service and has been loyal from the beginning. Let him be named Phraya Kukhanthibodin, lord of Buriram city, and let forest hunters of every land be subject to him. As for Hanuman, the monkey lord, he has destroyed many enemies. I made a pledge to let him rule Ayutthaya's realm. Now the yaksha war is finished, and he will be crown and refuge of the people. I and my younger brother Phra Lak will help speak, teach, and maintain the monkeys, making them lasting until life leaves us. As for Phraya Phiphek the asura, he will go rule the royal seat of Lanka. He is not skilled in battle and war, and he has no mighty power of his own. Each month I will send my arrow to visit the yaksha city. If any enemy ruler attacks, write a letter and hang it on the arrow, and send it here." Having spoken, he gave rewards in order according to rank: "Go rule your cities and make them happy and lasting."

Then Phra Phrot and Phra Satrut, skilled in war, together with mighty Phiphek and Sukhrip, Ongkhot the bold monkey, all eighteen crowned glorious monkeys, the monkey armies, and Kukhan bowed their heads and received the royal rewards, all rejoicing together. Each bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of lord Phra Narai, raised his gathered troops, and departed separately toward his city.

Then Phraya Anuchit, glorious monkey, ruled Dvaravati city and dwelt in a splendid jeweled palace. Lovely women, tender and beautiful, soothed and served him, singing for his pleasure and fanning his body. Some danced and performed, some played strings and bowed instruments together; some attended closely in rows. The son of Phra Phai was happy and secure, delighted by wealth, consumed with the taste of desire and company. He leaned close, lay down intimately on the bed, and fell asleep.

In the last watch of the night, the moon curved away behind the mountain edge, the stars weakened their bright light, and jeweled fowl opened their eyes and called to one another. The musicians sounded music, trumpets and conches loud in tumult. Koels urged on the sun, and golden light glowed across the sky. The monkey lord awoke from sleep on his radiant nine-gem couch, walked with graceful steps, and went to bathe in the water.

He entered the cleansing place and bathed. Perfumed water scented with pollen spread fragrance. He put on trousers patterned with red gems and naga-border kanok vines, and a purple khomphat robe with floating round designs tied with gold. His side-cloths and moving cloth were worked with Garuda forms. A small-sleeved brocade coat covered his body, and three jeweled chains crossed him. Directional plates and a ruby breast-jewel shone; his armlets were golden naga and his bracelets were gold. Emerald rings in faceted settings, a bright diamond crown, shining ear ornaments, and hanging garlands adorned him. He moved his hands gracefully and came out to the audience hall.

He ascended and sat on the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. Suddenly his heart burned like the final fire. His body trembled and his face went pale. It was as if his head would split apart; sweat soaked the glorious monkey's body. He glanced at the ministers and it was as if the light of an arrow stabbed his eyes. He gave no royal command and issued no order about affairs of kingship. He sat silent, thinking and pondering, and his quick wisdom made it clear: "I am a soldier come to share the seat of Phra Narai the great king. This is not fitting. Therefore danger and ominous heat have arisen, because our glory is not equal. If I sit here longer, I may lose my life." Having thought this, he walked away from the splendid golden seat.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the solar-line king, bearer of the bow: "Your Majesty gave me, a monkey, rule over the city of Ayutthaya. Out of mercy and compassion, your favor is vast and heavy, greater than the whole surface of the earth, intending to make me safe and blessed. But mighty Ayutthaya is not fitting for your servant. My whole body is made hot and shaken, as if this head of mine would split and die. The hundred thousand riches, the powers, the splendors, and the great shining white umbrella, I ask to offer back beneath the feet of the four-armed lord."

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard mighty Phraya Anuchit. The king spoke royal words: "That ruling Ayutthaya has made the glorious monkey's breast burn and given you no happiness or welfare. Do not be sorrowful. I will create for you a new royal city, vast and full of delight. I will shoot this radiant arrow; follow it, and wherever it falls, return. I will go raise and build a royal city there, equal to a divine city in Tavatimsa." Having spoken, he took up the mighty arrow and went out to the front court.

He drew the Brahmastra onto the string, moved gracefully, showed his brave strength, and shot it up as if along the surface of the sky. Its sound shook and made the earth tremble.

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit bowed his head and offered homage. The monkey lord flew after it at once.

He saw the Brahmastra arrow travel straight and fall onto a great mountain. Its nine peaks were smashed and broken apart; the trees became ash and dust. The earth was made level and smooth, with a broad water-side plain. It was clean, bright, and vast, like a pleasure-ground of Phra Suli. He rejoiced as if he had gained Indra's treasure, and immediately descended from the sky to that ground on the earth.

Then he swept his tail all around the directions, using his bold and mighty power, making it into a city wall. When it was finished, he returned quickly.

When he arrived, he crawled in to attend, bowed his head with joined hands, and reported: "Your servant followed the victory arrow through the sky. The Brahmastra fell on a mountain; all nine peaks were broken apart. The trees were smashed by its power, and all became level ground. The white, clean earth and water plain I swept into a surrounding wall. The foundation is broad and large, much like the realm of Ayutthaya city."

Then Phra Sritthirak, lord and protector, heard the mighty son of Phra Phai. The sky-passing lord was choked and troubled. He said: "I sent you only to look and learn where the arrow fell. Once that was known, I would raise the army and go build a city for the monkeys, lasting until the moon and sun are gone. Why was it right to think and do this first? How will it become lasting? If I go there now, my journey is spoiled."

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit was startled through his whole body, as if his life would end. "Wasted is my wise strength," he thought, "for I did not consider the matter. I went beyond the king's command." His hurt was beyond measure. The more he thought, the more anger and grief pressed his chest. Sweat poured down over his face. He did not know how to answer the royal command, and lowered his face, silent and unmoving.

Then the crown of the worlds, conqueror of all lands, looked at the bearing of Phra Phai's son, as if his life would leave him. He felt deep mercy and tenderness, loving the glorious monkey beyond measure, and spoke gracious words: "Meritorious one, do not be sorrowful. I will send the gods to build the royal city for you, together with heavenly royal prosperity. Go be crown of that city."

Now the tale will speak of the lord of Tavatimsa. He sat above his splendid divine seat in the great Wechayan palace, together with the gods and celestial maidens, like stars surrounding the moon in Maghavan's great glory. He learned that Phra Hariwong, scion of the great imperial line, would build a vast royal city for glorious mighty Hanuman.

He therefore issued an authoritative command to radiant Vishnukarma: "Go attend Phra Chakri in the great city of Ayutthaya. Whatever the lord desires, do according to his wish, by your learned power and might."

Then brave-hearted Phra Vishnukarma bowed his head, received the divine command, and led his attendant gods flying away.

When they reached Ayutthaya city, the wise god entered the great victory palace and sat in the midst of the ministers. He informed the avatar lord that lord Maghavan had sent him and the gods to attend the four-armed king.

Then Phra Narai of the solar line, bearer of the bow, heard mighty Phra Vishnukarma. The king rejoiced, for it matched his thought. His face shone like the moon, and he gave royal command: "Take the mighty gods and create a vast royal city, with royal power, riches, palaces in rows, gems, and pearls, for bold Hanuman, in the place of Nopkhiri."

Then radiant Phra Vishnukarma received the command of Phra Chakri and led the mighty monkey lord out from the great palace, together with the divine lords on left and right. They flew leaping up through the clouds and came straight there by swift power.

Then Phraya Anuchit, chief warrior, when he arrived, led the gods down to the ground of the earth. He said to the gods and radiant Vishnukarma: "Create a royal city, vast and splendid, in this place."

Then mighty Phra Vishnukarma and the powerful gods created the city by their strength.

There were three great palaces, four-faced and wrapped in shining gold. Their roof-blades were jeweled and splendid, with elegant chofa finials. Projecting porches were set with pearls; canopies and carved stalks were richly fashioned. Windows rose in receding levels, their shutters painted with curling golden vines. The rooms of palace women stood beside one another, with jeweled couches and gleaming seats. The audience halls and side halls were laid out in order, with broad patterned stone floors. Sword-guard barracks stood paired in graceful lines. The field and forecourt were delightful to see. Women's rows encircled the walls, and cool pavilions and gardens were complete. Lotus pools held many tiers of flowers, graceful and blooming. It was delightful like a divine dwelling in the chambers of Tusita.

When the creation of the royal city was complete, victorious and skillful Vishnukarma led the mighty gods flying back to their heavenly palace.

Then mighty Phraya Anuchit gazed carefully at the city, beautiful like a heavenly city of the gods. Joy filled him as if an emperor had offered him the jewel. He flew up quickly into the air and returned to Ayutthaya city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage to the lord of the three worlds, bearer of the bow, and reported: "By Your Majesty's power, the hosts of gods have gone and built the great royal city. Its borders are very broad, delightful, and life-giving. It is finished according to the command of the righteous lord."

Then Phra Kritsanurak heard the son of divine Phai and gave gracious command: "Go rule the city in happy delight. I will bestow the city's name so that it remains lasting: Nopburi." Having spoken, he commanded Sumanthan, the radiant commander, to divide the wealth in Ayutthaya city, together with horses, chariots, elephants, forces, and ministers on left and right, a complete half of all goods, and give it to Phraya Anuchit.

Then Sumanthan, director of royal affairs, bowed his head beneath the crown, received the mighty king's command, and went out.

He ordered all attendants, soldiers and civilians, small and great, both from the front and the inner side, to prepare for Hanuman.

Then the civilians and soldiers, all who were officers of the departments, arranged things in every office in noisy commotion: weapons offices, palace departments, inner treasury, police, trainers of palace women, pleasant royal vehicles, the bedding department, and the farming department. Inside they arranged the palace women, eunuchs, preachers, all attendants, old women, supervisors, tea-servers, and good Lady Champa. Some went with the kitchens in crowds, carrying and leading children and grandchildren amid noise. Oxen, buffaloes, carts, pack animals, camels, donkeys, and mounts were driven along. The elephant people readied elephants, binding howdahs, saddles, and firm gear. The horse people saddled horses by the thousand. The chariot people arranged by divisions. The gathered armies were stationed in rows beside the vehicles, dressed with gold-edged turbans, all ready inside the royal field.

Then the son of Phra Phai, wise in bearing, was exceedingly happy, delighted, and glad at having been granted heavenly prosperity. He bowed his head and took leave at the feet of the lord of the three worlds and of Phra Lak, the younger brother, then came out to bathe in the water.

Jeweled sprinklers scattered water like rain, and perfumed streams with pollen spread fragrance. He put on trousers with borders shaped like flying Garuda and a robe patterned with dancing kinnari. His trailing cloths had curling vine designs. An emerald breast-jewel shone green; chains were set with yellow gems. Directional plates and golden armlets shaped as moving dragons adorned him; diamond rings flashed like falling rainbows. A five-spired jeweled crown and flower garlands hung from his ear ornaments. He took up the mighty sword, bold like a great lion, descended from the noble jeweled palace, and walked to the jeweled landing.

When he arrived, he mounted the chariot throne and ordered the tenfold forces on left and right to set out from Ayutthaya city along the forest road.

O royal chariot: its wheel-rims were carved with shining designs, its curved yokes joined with jeweled plates, and its throne was made entirely of beautiful silver. Garuda and lions gleamed in rows of gems, and praying deities knelt with joined hands on the third level. The jeweled pavilion shone with five peaks blazing into the sky. Four noble horses were harnessed to it, prancing and tossing like great lions. The charioteer held a spear and moved his hand gracefully, driving as lightly as a wind-blown breeze. High regalia blocked the bright sun; golden yak-tail fans and streamers snapped. Attendant chariots lined the forest edge, and soldiers pressed together in haste.

Then families of men and women, small and great, carried shoulder-loads along the forest path. Some let their wives ride. Some, weary from walking, sat and rubbed their knees and legs. Some leaned on staffs and stared ahead. Some quarreled and argued noisily. Some laughed and teased one another. Some lost wives and children, crying as they searched with trembling bodies. Some stood panting and baring their teeth; when a mother-in-law caught up, they were glad. Some groups stopped and cooked rice, hugged their knees by fires, and smoked tobacco. Squad leaders inspected, cursed, and struck them, and the people dodged and ran, crowding forward.

Then mighty Phraya Anuchit traveled through the forest with his soldiers and forces, crossing streams, passing fields, hollows, mountains, and the lines of forest trees. He came happily through every place until he reached the border of the wall. He had the victory chariot driven through the royal gate and halted by the shining jeweled landing beside the bright terrace. Then he went up into the great palace, gleaming like the moon's palace in heaven. The women of the inner palace surrounded him like stars and followed him.

Then the people, men and women all together, rich men, ascetics, brahmins, elders, merchants, traders, and householders built houses and shops in commotion, crowded through every district with no empty place. The whole city became wealthy; all had rank, glory, and goods. All the soldiers and attendants separated and settled according to station. Some lived in masonry buildings, some in plank houses, halls, shops, and orderly dwellings.

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in battle, dwelt happily in all three shining jeweled palaces. He was established in the ten royal virtues and in the duties of a radiant king. Every seven days he went to attend Phra Chakri at Ayutthaya city. At night he entered sleep on a radiant nine-gem couch. With a glad heart, the monkey reclined on the pleasant bed. Beautiful golden lamps shone bright; beautiful women and palace attendants stood left and right; beautiful tassels and flower garlands spread fragrance that delighted the heart.

Then the palace women, small and great, attended in dense rows. Some came in to serve with fans; some massaged and pressed the feet of the glorious monkey, taking turns according to each woman's office.

The serving women sang laments, sweet and lingering, with soft voices. The krajappi, lutes, and songs rang out; drums called and voices answered in harmony. Fiddles, flutes, cymbals, and clappers carried the music onward; the slow pipe sounded like a melody of heaven. Hoarse, yearning, lamenting, interwoven sound thundered sweetly to the spirit.

The dancing women danced and glided, extending their arms to left and right. They circled like swans in motion and cast meaningful glances from their eyes. They danced in rows, sidling near to entice and stir the glorious monkey's heart. Then they moved into the gesture of horses playing polo, walking in elegant display. They bent with playful art, turned in circles, shifted postures, and changed into the form of swans in flight, serving the monkey lord beside the shining bed.

Then Phraya Anuchit watched the dancing women and became bound with desire and attachment. Hearing the voices and music, sweet and pleasing, he was delighted and gladdened in heart, and fell asleep in the night.
