This is the eighty-sixth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Mahaban of Cakkrawan coming to Lanka to avenge Thotsakan, Phiphek using Rama's arrow-message system for help, Hanuman coming from Nopburi, killing Mahaban by crushing his hidden life-heart, and Phiphek setting Paowanasun over Cakkrawan before returning with Hanuman to Ayutthaya.

Translation

Hanuman Kills Mahaban of Cakkrawan

Now the tale will speak of Thao Mahaban the yaksha. He enjoyed vast heavenly prosperity in his city, whose name was Cakkrawan. He had armies, ministers, horses, chariots, and elephants; his wealth was complete and vast, like a palace-city of Indra. His warriors were skilled in battle, all bold, brave, and fierce. By power the asuras could fly through the air, walk on water, and dive under the earth. The yaksha king had a chief queen named beautiful Lady Montha, and all the palace women were lovely and auspicious in form. The mighty king had subdued the whole of heaven. He was a beloved life-companion and friend of Thotsakan, lord of Lanka. The two cities shared the earth without quarrel or suspicion; they had shared joy and suffering together in blessed great friendship.

Thinking of Thotsakan, his beloved yaksha friend, he commanded Nonthasun the asura: "Prepare the mighty armies, with elephants, horses, and chariots, in order according to the great battle formation. Tomorrow I myself will march to victorious Lanka."

Then Nonthasun the yaksha received the command, bowed in leave, and came out from the royal audience hall.

He arranged the fourfold army, choosing only bold and sturdy warriors. Elephant officers bound armored elephants as the vanguard, with firm gear covered in red felt. Drivers and doctors rode at the neck and tail, holding elephant hooks and swinging them in display. Horse officers rode among the horse troops, holding spears and moving their hands gracefully. Chariot officers stood firm in their chariots, hands on bows and trying the strings. Commanders inspected the divisions, common soldiers and officers, all seasoned in war. All held every kind of weapon, swinging and raising them in commotion. They crowded together as if the earth would sink beneath them, a force beyond counting, like ten seas of soldiers.

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, when dawn came and the sun's light cleared, came to the bathing place.

He bathed his body in flowing water from jeweled sprinklers, cold water like rain-drops. He rubbed himself with divine fragrant perfumes blended with flower pollen. He put on gold-cut trousers with mirror panels and a raised robe with kanok stalks. His side-cloth had red coral medallions; the moving cloth was adorned with jewels and gold. His coat was shining gold; three radiant chains crossed him. Directional plates and rubies were graceful, and his breast-jewel and soft chains fitted his body. Golden bracelets and armlets were set with diamonds; rings had faceted settings and swan plates. He wore the jeweled crown paired with imperial glory and golden ear ornaments. In his hands he held the mighty bow, discus, mace, and jeweled pearl club. Splendid like supreme Brahma, he came up into the shining divine chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheel-rims were jeweled in many bright designs; its soft curved yoke was all gems, and a pavilion stood over the floating throne. Figures of Garuda seizing nagas shook and lifted; mirror panels and kanok curls delighted the eye. Side-panels flashed with gem radiance; graceful plates and supports were finely formed. Four thousand royal lions were harnessed to it, and charioteers held bows and arrows. High regalia, shade, and yak-tail fans surrounded it; curved trumpets and drums thundered. The sound of chariots, elephants, horses, and soldiers shouting roared. Dust rose in smoke and swirled deep as they drove one another urgently forward.

When he reached the checkpoint of Lanka city, he had the great army halt and stand along the forest line, according to the formation in which it had marched. Then he gave royal command to Nonthakan the yaksha: "Go find the Lanka checkpoint men and bring them here at once."

Then Nonthakan, the powerful yaksha, bowed his head, received the royal words, offered homage, and hurried away.

When he found Ritthikan, the mighty asura who was chief checkpoint officer, he told him the matter according to the command he had received, and brought him to attend the asura lord.

They bowed their heads in homage to the supreme crown of the yakshas, standing amid the ministers and waiting to hear the asura's command.

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, spoke royal words: "Listen, Ritthikan the asura. Thao Thotsian, my friend, scion of mighty Brahma, crown of the demon city, is he still in any degree of comfort?"

Then wise Ritthikan heard the king's words, bowed in homage, and answered: "In the royal city of Lanka there arose a fierce and killing war because of two human brothers named Rama and Lak. The ruler of Ayutthaya raised a monkey army and came in force. They fought and opposed the yakshas for some thirteen years. Kumpakan and Intharachit died, and at last Thotsakan himself led the armies out to fight. The enemy killed him and ended his life. Now they have set his younger brother Phiphek over the royal city of Lanka, under the name Thotsakhiriwong, lord of demons, and have taken their armies away to their city."

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, heard and was stunned through his body as if struck by lightning. Grief for his beloved friend filled him; tears flooded the yaksha's face. Thinking angrily of the enemy ruler, he burned like the fire at the end of an age. He sprang up, stamped his foot, and roared a lion-roar with a thunderous voice: "Human insects, tiny as flies! I will cut them apart and ease the rage in my throat. Listen, Phattharachak, hurry to that yaksha Phiphek. Tell him that mighty I command him to come out to the city checkpoint."

Then Phattharachak, demon lord skilled in war, received the command of the mighty king, raised joined hands, and hurried away.

When he reached the royal city of Lanka, he reported the matter to the four ministers in full, according to the asura's command, from beginning to end.

Then Paowanasun the yaksha heard the royal command and was alarmed. "This time," he thought, "the royal city of Lanka may be torn into great disaster." Having thought this, they went together into the shining audience hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet and reported to the yaksha king: "Thao Mahaban, great lord, has raised a marching army. He is stationed at the end of the victorious city checkpoint and has sent Phattharachak the yaksha to invite your feet to attend the kumbhanda king."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong learned that Thotsakan's friend had come and his heart trembled. He thought: "Thao Mahaban is deluded, base, and coarse. Even if I went out to him, how could there be friendship? Better to die than shame the feet of radiant Phra Narai the great king." Having thought this, he spoke to Cakkrawan's chief minister: "I am a servant beneath the kingship of the great imperial line, the avatar Phra Narai himself. Why should I associate with wicked men? Though your master has power, it is not proper for me to go out and see him. You hurry back and make this clear to the asura."

Then Phattharachak the yaksha heard the royal words, offered homage, and hurried away.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong, after Phattharachak the kumbhanda had left the territory of Lanka, burned in his heart like poisoned fire, fearing the power of Mahaban the yaksha. He took a slate and examined the asura's fate. He saw ill omens sharing the birth, with the ascendant and moon struck throughout. Saturn, arrogant, pressed Saturn in Pisces and consumed the space between the ascendants. But Jupiter stood in the eleventh place, meaning someone would help preserve his life; he would not reach life's end. The asura's heart cleared somewhat. Then he looked by the serpent calculation and saw that the enemy, the chief lord, would meet destruction in the middle of the army. Now the time was near when the avatar would send his royal arrow to visit the city, and by it he would be able to fight and defeat the enemy. Having understood this, he commanded Paowanasun the yaksha: "Muster the soldiers to guard the faces of the walls."

Then brave-hearted Paowanasun bowed his head, received the demon king's command, took leave with joined hands, and crawled out.

He mustered the kumbhanda troops, choosing only strong and brave men fully equipped with weapons, to guard all around the royal city. On battlements, battle-towers, forts, and camps, he set cannon in rows. The reserve troops were all good men, stationed at intervals of five sen. At the royal city gates he placed divisions of brave soldiers. In the center, the shock troops, all cutters-through, held firm in the middle of the city.

Then Phattharachak the yaksha left Lanka city and hurried back to the victorious army camp.

When he arrived, he crawled in to attend, bowed his head with joined hands, and reported everything from beginning to end according to Phiphek's words.

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, heard and grew angry like fire. The asura ground his teeth and chewed them. "That vile Phiphek speaks with arrogant delusion and does not fear my fierce power. I will seize him and set him impaled on a stake for public shame." Having spoken, he ordered the royal chariot to move, set the fourfold army great and small in motion, and drove forward urgently in the strength of his anger, with shouting that shook the three worlds.

When he arrived, he commanded the soldiers on left and right to halt and wait to see whether Phiphek the asura would march out to fight.

Then Phra Hariwong, bearer of the bow, enjoyed lasting royal prosperity with the lovely Lady Sida, surrounded by eighty-four thousand splendid palace women, who sang and served Phra Chakri in the vast jeweled palace. At night he entered sleep on a shining divine golden couch. In the last watch, the sky-passing lord drifted into sleep.

He dreamed a sign: in the southern quarter the clouds changed strangely. They became flames and smoke, dark and heavy across the sky. Then one fierce man appeared, holding a sharp trident. He leapt through the ministers, tore open the king's chest, and drew out the intestines, laying them scattered around Mount Cakkrawan. Then he crossed over the Sithandara river, and the darkness in the sky disappeared.

He woke from the bed just as the sun's disk peered over the mountain peak. He bathed, put on bright ornaments, and the king came out to the jeweled audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the golden throne amid the soldiers on left and right, with mighty Phraya Anuchit who had come from Nopburi. He explained the dream sign to the four priests: "Examine this carefully. What will this dream mean?"

Then the chief priests and astrologers received the command and calculated according to the ascendant prediction. Knowing by their capable wisdom, they bowed at the feet of the bow-bearing lord and reported: "The dream of dark clouds in the sky, with the sun's light as flame and smoke, means that hostile enemy kings will raise war-bands and armies to attack a city under Your Majesty's lotus feet. The part where a man with a trident tore the chest open by bold power and drew the intestines around Cakkrawan is an auspicious sign. All enemies will be destroyed. The glory of Phra Chakrit will increase, and his sacred power will spread through all ten directions of the earth."

Then Phra Chakrarat, radiant jewel, heard the chief astrologers. The king thought of Thao Thotsakhiriwong, who had no brave power of his own. If any danger had come to him, it seemed he might lose his life. "I must send the mighty arrow to learn what evil or good has happened." Having thought this, he took up the victory bow and went to the front court.

He drew the Palachan arrow onto the string, his eyes aimed toward the southern quarter. Pulling with victorious strength and skill, the sky-passing lord shot it by his power.

It shone like the moon, traveling through the sky, and fell in victorious Lanka directly before Phiphek the asura.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw the arrow of Phra Chakri and rejoiced because it matched his thought. He invited it to rest above a golden jeweled tray, joined his hands, bowed to the potent royal weapon, worshiped it with bright incense and candles, then wrote and inscribed a letter. He tied it to the bow, bowed at the lotus feet, and the royal arrow floated up into the sky. As if it had a spirit, it came and fell directly before Phra Chakri's face.

Then radiant Phra Sritthirak looked and saw the asura's letter attached to the victory arrow. He took it up, unfolded it, and read. He learned that a great war had arisen: the dead Thotsakan's friend had come from mighty Cakkrawan city. He gave authoritative command to brave Phraya Anuchit: "War has broken out at Lanka. You, mighty one, hurry to help Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha in battle. Kill all who have come, by the power of the monkeys."

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, bowed his head, received the command of the four-armed lord, took leave, and walked out.

The monkey lord leapt and displayed his power, making all ten directions quake in fear. He sprang swiftly through the sky and went straight to victorious Lanka.

He descended at the vast palace residence, like Tavatimsa heaven, ascended the lovely audience hall, and went directly to the asura.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw mighty Phraya Anuchit and rejoiced. He descended from the splendid jeweled couch, walked forward, took him by the hand, and led him to sit together on the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella.

Then brave Vayu's son, mighty and wise, respectfully bowed to the demon king and reported: "Phra Chakri has learned that enemies have come close to radiant Lanka city. His royal command sent me here to help fight the asuras."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard the mighty son of Phra Phai and gave command in answer: "Thao Mahaban, lord of yakshas, is arrogant, boastful, coarse, and proud. He claims great power and does not fear Phra Chakri's glory. My anger is beyond thought; the yaksha's words wounded my heart. That the royal command sent you here this time gives me joy beyond measure. His noble favor surpasses all else, greater than the three worlds. But I am a servant of Phra Harirak, and he destroyed the yakshas in Lanka. I have not yet fought to repay his favor and the compassion that raised me to royal dignity. Now that war has come, I mean to go out and win victory. The enemies must not cross over and insult us. If in any way I am outmatched, then help me at once."

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit bowed and answered the asura: "All this is according to your wisdom. I will fly up and wait in the sky, watching from above. If I see you lose the advantage, I will come down and kill him, ending his life."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong heard fierce and skilled Phraya Anuchit. The kumbhanda rejoiced and gave royal command to the demon ministers: "Muster the mighty armies. I will march out to win victory."

Then Paowanasun, chief minister, bowed his head, received the king's command, paid homage, and hurried out.

Horse officers rode steeds, swinging javelins like turning discs. Chariot officers rode together in chariots, all holding bows with poisoned arrows. Commanders inspected and prepared the battle troops, countless and crowded as the Akanittha heaven. They grasped weapons and swung them, displaying power, none thinking of his own death. Then they harnessed the great war elephant, complete with shining splendid gear. Commoners and officers crowded with noise and stood in rows according to the naga-scale formation.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, when the army had been prepared, came to the bathing place.

He had the lotus-gold jeweled pipes opened, so that water became mist like rain. He wore fragrant perfumes blended with nine-gold and red-gold scent. His trousers had splendid swan-vine designs; his robe was bright golden cloth. The moving cloth and side-cloth were worked with Garuda vines. His coat was set with yellow gems in circling bands. A jeweled divine breastplate clasped his chest; chains and a swan-kanok breast-jewel crossed him. Golden bracelets and serpent-shaped armlets adorned him; diamond rings shone gracefully. He wore crown, jeweled ear ornaments, and flower clusters. In his hands he held bow and arrow. Beautiful, like mighty ten-faced Thotsakan, he walked and mounted the war elephant.

O war elephant: fierce, excited, powerful, displaying courage. It was adorned with splendid gold-inlaid gear, beautiful like an emperor's elephant. The front neck-strap, jeweled and shining, had crystal pads, gold cords, and crossed patterns, bound in layered circles and straps, compact and fierce for battle. When called, it roared aloud, crying with a thunderous elephant-call. It was hardy, enduring weapons, delighted in combat and war. It was adorned with many tiered umbrellas, streamers, and flags of alternating colors. Pipes, drums, gongs, kettledrums, trumpets, and conches sounded in commotion. The asuras shouted to rouse the omen; Lanka roared in tumult. Dust covered sky and earth as the army hurried and drove its men forward.

Then Phraya Anuchit, chief warrior, flew swiftly through the air and watched hidden in the sky.

Then Thao Thephasura, skilled in war, saw Phiphek come out to fight. The king ground his teeth and chewed them. He roared a lion-roar, crying out like thunder: "Listen, kumbhandas who are servants of Lanka's lord. Do not come in to die with him; turn aside and flee instead. I came here with fixed intention to kill that base Phiphek." Having spoken, he commanded his ministers: "Hurry the soldiers forward. Seize Phiphek, lord of demons, and impale him on a stake to satisfy my heart."

Then Nonthasun, chief of the vanguard, received the command of the mighty king and drove the men in to attack.

They hurled and flung weapons in confusion. The soldiers shouted loudly, and reserve after reserve pressed in to fight, battling and surging together without thought of death.

Then all the Lanka troops separated and came out to meet them, common soldiers and officers together, striking left and sweeping right in confusion.

The Cakkrawan troops died in heaps beyond counting, broke back to the front of the victory chariot, and lost all order in the dusk of battle.

Then Thao Thephasura the yaksha saw his troops broken and scattered back, and he grew angry like poisonous flame. He stamped his foot, urged on the lion-chariot, and swung his potent bow. The asura drove into the middle of the enemy army, pressing close in fierce battle.

He smashed through the Lanka forces, who feared the asura's glory and could not resist. When he reached the front of the war elephant, the demon lord cried out with terrible force: "Listen, Phiphek the traitor. You know nothing of your elder brother's kindness. Your greed has passed all measure because you desire the wealth of Lanka. You hardened your face and became the enemy's servant, showing no pity to your own family. You have disgraced the powerful line of Brahma. I will kill you and end your life."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard and was enraged beyond measure. He answered: "Listen, Mahaban. Do not be coarse and arrogant. My royal elder brother who died was born from the same womb with me. You are a man of Cakkrawan city; what business is it of yours to come and insult me? One man belittles another with words, but I do not fear the demon lord's power. You are like a firefly with little light. How could you compete with the blazing sun?" Having spoken, he drove the war elephant in to fight.

Its tusks stabbed and its feet struck and crushed. Lions and charioteers died alike. Royal chariots shattered into dust by the elephant's mighty strength.

Then mighty Thao Mahaban, skilled in war, fell to the ground. Angry like fire burning the sky, he sprang up, stood, stamped his foot, and shouted like a thunderbolt. Displaying his power, he leapt up and stood upon the elephant's tusk.

Phiphek struck him with the elephant hook; Thao Mahaban struck with the bow-stave. It hit Thotsakhiriwong the asura, and he fell down along with the elephant doctors and drivers.

Then brave-hearted Phraya Anuchit saw Phiphek lose the advantage to Mahaban, and he leapt down from the clouds.

Bold like a royal lion, he swung the mighty trident raised high, displayed his power, and stood blocking the kumbhanda's path.

Then Thao Thephasura saw the fierce monkey. The kumbhanda grew angry like fire and cried: "Listen, beast. Where is your land and city? What is your name? Why have you come and acted like this? Do you not fear mighty me, ruler of radiant great Cakkrawan city, whose power subdues the whole earth and whose might is supreme? Hurry away beyond death's reach. Do not be bold and bring your neck before the discus. I will kill Phiphek, lord of yakshas, for he is vile and unlucky."

Then bold Hanuman, chief warrior, heard and answered: "Do you not know, asura? I am the soldier of the lord avatar. My name is mighty Phraya Anuchit, ruler of Nopburi city. The royal command sent me to learn news of Thao Thotsakhiriwong, crown of asuras here in Lanka city. Why have you raised troops to plunder the city and trouble the lotus feet of the bow-bearing lord? Even twenty-armed kings, mighty in battle, he subdued sixteen times over. Those who arrogantly opposed him in war, their clans, kinsmen, and friends all died, together with soldiers, horses, and chariots beyond counting. You are like a chick that will be destroyed by a bird's claw. All your troops who came with you will die now by my powerful glory."

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, heard and was enraged beyond measure. The asura ground his teeth and stamped his foot, roaring a lion-roar, shouting like thunder: "Forest monkey, do not swell yourself with words. That vile Phiphek did not know his elder brother's kindness. When I called for him peacefully he would not come, but instead raised his army and came out to fight. You are only a human's servant, boasting terrible fierce power, meddling by coming to fight with death itself. I will destroy you and end your life." Having spoken, he gave royal command: "Listen, asura soldiers. Seize that fierce-hearted monkey and cut him apart, so my throat's anger is satisfied."

Then the asura yaksha troops heard the asura's command and rushed in to attack and seize the monkey.

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, fought alone in the midst of the soldiers. He fought hand to hand in a crush: feet kicking, hands slapping, mouth biting, seizing and throwing with the strength of the glorious monkey. Heads were cut off, feet cut off; the men lost their senses, died, fled, and scattered apart.

Then mighty Mahaban saw the kumbhanda troops all broken and scattered back. Furious like poisonous flame, he swung the potent bow raised high, leapt and sprang by his power, and rushed in to kill and fight.

Then the radiant son of divine Phai, mighty and strong, dodged swiftly at the right moment and leapt to seize the asura by power. His left foot stepped on the right knee; his hand grabbed and tried to wrench away the bow. Each was bold, each fierce, neither lowering his hand. The monkey kicked and struck the demon lord.

Then brave-hearted Thao Thephasura staggered and fell to the ground, angry like the final fire burning the sky. He rose up, ground his teeth, stamped his foot, swung the bow-weapon raised high, set it on the string, aimed to destroy life, and shot it by power.

Its sound thundered and shook in fear, trembling up to the Akanittha heaven. It blazed like the sun; the potent arrows crowded the sky.

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, dodged by the force of his power and snatched up the arrows at once. He broke them in play until they were smashed and shattered, mocked the yaksha, and threw the pieces back to him. Pointing at his face he said: "Vile one, today your life will end." Having spoken, he displayed his power, swung the bright diamond trident in his hand, stamped his foot, leapt, and rushed to seize the asura.

With both hands he bound both feet together, slammed him down, tore off arms and legs, and threw the pieces away with mighty strength. They struck great Mount Marakata.

Then the yaksha king, lord of asuras, was cut apart but at once joined back together. The asura did not lose his life. With no weapons left with which to win, he sprang up angry and rash, puffing and biting his teeth. The kumbhanda went and tore up a palm tree.

Bracing his foot, setting his shoulder, and pulling hard, he uprooted it by bold strength. He swung it, leapt and sprang, and rushed in to fight the monkey.

He struck left and swept right by his strength, with a sound like thunder striking the mountain. Both were brave, both fierce, fighting in close combat and pressing forward.

Then Vayu's son, mighty and strong, dodged, received, and guarded himself. He leapt into combat and seized the palm-club, struck the asura many times, and the demon staggered, unable to endure his bold strength. He fell to the surface of the earth, and Hanuman leapt up and planted his foot on his chest.

Looking at him, Hanuman thought: "What is the nature of this asura? Why can he not be killed and destroyed? Perhaps his life-heart is not in his body, like Thotsakan and mighty Maiyarap." Having thought this, he spoke and asked wise Phiphek the asura: "Why does this Mahaban not die when I destroy him? Does he have a doctrine or magic art learned from somewhere?"

Then wise Phiphek heard and called back: "This asura Mahaban received a boon from Phra Suli. Therefore he has bold strength and power. Strike and cut only the body and his life will not end, by the victorious power granted to him. To kill him, tear out his heart and crush it to pieces in your hand. Then the demon lord will die, according to Phra Suli's command."

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit understood the asura's words. He raised the trident, swung it, and displayed his power. He split open the demon lord's chest, tore it wide, scooped out the life-heart, and crushed it until life was ended by the power of the mighty monkey lord.

Then Paowanasun the yaksha saw Thao Mahaban the asura reach the end of life and rejoiced. He led the great forces of victorious Lanka out to block the forest edge and seize the troops of Cakkrawan.

Some were bound by neck and hand amid noisy shouting. Fierce men threatened them with bold words, yanked and dragged them until they fell, rose, and crawled. Demons against demons showed no mercy.

Then all the gods and divine maidens saw mighty Phraya Anuchit kill the asura Mahaban and end his life by bold strength in war. Each rejoiced steadily, smiling from the windows of victorious palaces. Some scattered divine flowers, golden lotuses and garlands, down until they covered the forest floor, blessing the monkey lord: "May your power and might increase. May you honor the feet of bow-bearing Phra Narai, support the world, sky, and earth, until the aeon ends."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, when the war was finished, rejoiced and commanded glorious Hanuman: "Please, mighty lord, return into the royal palace residence, vast and delightful, and be happy there in lasting ease." Having spoken, he took the monkey lord by the hand, mounted the war elephant with him, ordered the soldiers to move, and returned into Lanka city.

When they reached the jeweled divine landing, they descended from the fierce war elephant and walked together up into the shining great palace.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne and commanded the glorious monkey Hanuman: "Please, mighty one, go bathe and cleanse yourself in the water. Eat delicious food in the great pearl palace with the young and lovely Lady Benyakai, and be happy in lasting ease."

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, received the gracious royal command, raised joined hands, and came away in joy.

He entered the splendid bedchamber. Beautiful Lady Benyakai conversed with him in affection, and the monkey lord reclined on the bed.

Then soft and lovely Lady Benyakai, long separated from the taste of love, had only now met him again. Her heart was joyful and glad in attachment. She leaned close and embraced him, delighted and happy in heart.

Then the palace women, small and great, all bright with auspicious beauty, were joyful. They bathed, applied powder, dressed themselves, combed their hair, looked into mirrors, and painted their faces. When they were finished, they came up together to serve the monkey lord.

Some entered to fan him, attending beside the bed, like stars surrounding the moon as it moves floating through the night sky.

The serving women sang and crooned, answering one another slowly and sweetly. Their voices moaned and lamented in rhythm, while plucked and bowed instruments joined together. Ramana drums called to drums, clappers and cymbals, lovely as heavenly music. It was like dew, women offering garlands, roosters calling, karawik birds, and crocodiles.

[Saming Thong]

The dancing women danced and glided, extending and shaping their arms to left and right. Their waists were soft and delicate, and their whole bodies bent gracefully; they cast sidelong glances to entice. Then they made circles, changed hands, and threw their arms in time with the music. They shifted into the posture of horses playing polo, showing playful, graceful art. They walked with languid elegant steps, beautiful like divine apsaras. They shifted into the gesture of "younger sister sleeping," with sharp glances according to the pattern to allure the heart. They crossed and changed, circling right and left, then moved into shoulder-high formations, serving mighty Vayu's son in the shining palace chamber.

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit watched the women dancing beside his bed. Hearing the voices and music, sweet, complete, and full of delight, and smelling the pleasing fragrance, the monkey drifted into sleep.

When the last part of the night had passed, birds called with clear voices. Golden light shone in the bright sky, and dawn peered over Mount Yugandhara. The monkey lord woke from sleep, came out from the bed, bathed, put on splendid ornaments, and walked to the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the bright, splendid throne-seat, amid the asura kumbhandas who bowed in homage to the asura king.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw Phraya Anuchit and rejoiced. He spoke words: "The royal city of Cakkrawan, belonging to Thao Mahaban the yaksha, is rich with heavenly prosperity and armies countless as the ocean. I would give Paowanasun, wise and discerning minister, to dwell there as my eyes and heart. What do you think, monkey?"

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, heard the gracious command, raised joined hands, and answered: "To give Paowanasun, lord of demons, charge of radiant Cakkrawan city will increase Phra Chakri's glory until sky, earth, and the aeon end."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard the son of divine Phai and commanded Paowanasun the kumbhanda: "You, wise and skilled one, go hold Cakkrawan's realm. Guard the people in justice, as eyes and ears for the four-armed lord." Then he gave authoritative command, inviting Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, to dress and put on ornaments, and fly away to attend Phra Chakri.
