This is the eighty-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Phiphek and Hanuman reporting the defeat of Mahaban to Rama, the births of Thotsakan's posthumous son Painasuriyawong and Hanuman's son Asuraphat, Hanuman abandoning Nopburi for ascetic practice after a public embarrassment, and Painasuriyawong learning from Waranisun and Montho that Thotsakan was his true father.
Translation
Hanuman Becomes an Ascetic, and Painasuriyawong Learns His Father
Then Phra Narai of the solar line lay on the bright jeweled couch in the splendid golden palace, happy and content in spirit with beloved Sida, until golden light glowed beneath the sky and the moon turned behind the mountain edge. Jeweled fowl woke and called; bird-voices sounded sweetly. Bees and beetles flew in humming swarms, and the lord of the earth woke from sleep.

He cleansed himself, bathed, and put on ornaments, shining like a divine painting. Moving his hands gracefully, he walked to the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. Ministers entered together to attend, bowing densely on every side. Glancing up, he saw Thao Thotsakhiriwong, wise and discerning, and mighty Phraya Anuchit. The king rejoiced and gave royal command, speaking to the yaksha king: "When war came and beset your city, I was deeply troubled. So I sent glorious Hanuman to help fight and break it. What kind of power and magic did that yaksha lord Mahaban have?"

Then Phiphek, wise in bearing, heard the king's royal words, bowed in homage, and answered. He reported every detail of Thephasura's mighty asura power, through the battle and the victory over the asura. "Your servant was sheltered by the lotus feet of the world-ruling lord of the serpent-line arms. Your Majesty's favor exceeds sky and earth and is beyond counting. As for victorious Cakkrawan city, I have sent Paowanasun to guard it, and I offer this golden garland beneath the feet of the mighty lord."

Then Phra Narai Chakrit of the solar line learned that the hostile asura had reached the end of life and rejoiced. He praised Hanuman's power and the wisdom of Phiphek the yaksha, saying that both preserved honor in the earth and were fit to be crowns of the people. Having spoken, he gave royal garments, radiant nine-gem rings, and three graceful chains as equal rewards in their hands.

Then sturdy Phiphek and Hanuman bowed their heads and joined hands in homage, receiving the royal rewards with joy. Each bowed in worship, took leave at the feet of radiant Phra Narai, left the shining audience hall, and separated toward his delightful city.

Then lovely Lady Montho, while Thotsakan was still alive, had conceived a royal son. When the first life was set, about one month had passed. After her husband died and Thao Thotsakhiriwong the asura came to rule victorious Lanka, he thought the pregnancy was from him. When the month and year were complete, the queen bore her beloved child: a beautiful male, bright in face and form, keen and noble, like Intharachit the yaksha lord, fitting the glory of a solar-line king.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw the royal prince and rejoiced, delighted that his thought had come true. It was as if he had gained the wealth, goods, and attendants of Dusit. His love was like his life itself, for he thought the child had been born from him. He had no suspicion or doubt, but loved him in intimate wonder. He named him Painasuriyawong, the one royal son of his heart. Then he chose noble nurses free of the six faults and gave them to him, along with governesses, grandmothers, and inner attendants, all lovely and pleasing to the eye. On the outer side he appointed Waranisun, a kinsman of his line, to be the prince's guardian, as the asura's heart and eyes.

Then beautiful Lady Benyakai, after sharing love with the monkey Hanuman, conceived. When the auspicious victory hour came, near dawn when the rooster called, she gave birth to a beloved child of her own life. It was a beautiful male, gleaming yellow and graceful. His body and arms were in yaksha form, but his face was a monkey's, like his father. The lady rejoiced.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw the son of the royal daughter, lovely and marked with beautiful signs. He felt great joy, lifted him onto his lap, and received his spirit. He named the kumbhanda Asuraphat. Then he chose nurses and caretakers, inner and outer, arranging everything according to station. No danger or harm touched him, and he lived in happiness at all times.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha and Prince Asuraphat gradually grew and developed. The two used to go play together morning and evening, never parting. They played polo in noisy commotion in the court before the palace, then studied the science of bow and arrow, and practiced riding horses and elephants. They went up to attend at the feet of the demon king constantly, at every time.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw his son and royal grandson and felt great joy. The demon king took Painasuriyawong and Asuraphat both onto his lap, held them, stroked them, kissed their hair and faces, and loved them as his eyes and heart. Then he took sons of ministers, all ten years old or younger, a thousand handsome children, and assigned five hundred equally to each prince.

Then the two solar-line princes bowed their heads in homage and went together to the shining palace.

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit ruled the people and citizens in vast Nopburi. Established in the ten royal virtues and in the duties of great kingship, he came out at the proper time to conduct royal affairs. The whole city lived in happiness, and all the people and citizens rejoiced together. At night he entered sleep in the great jeweled palace.

When the sun glowed and golden light shone bright, the monkey lord bathed, put on shining ornaments, and came out to the royal audience hall.

He ascended and sat on the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. Ministers bowed their heads in homage, crowded thickly everywhere. He spoke sweet words, commanding the great chief ministers: "Prepare the army and prepare the royal victory chariot. I will go play in the pleasure garden."

Then the wise and brave minister received the flavor of the words, bowed in leave, and crawled out.

He mustered the troops into a marching formation according to the order for a forest outing. The vanguard held matchlock guns and wore blue shirts edged with gold. Behind them came men in black shirts, holding spears in long rows. Behind them came men in leaf-green shirts, holding spears with yak-tail tassels. Behind them came men in gold-vine shirts, all wearing sashes and carrying swords. The splendid royal chariot and attendant chariots for the inner women were harnessed. They were set in companies and files along the great road, crowding before and behind, ready and waiting for the monkey king.

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, when the army was ready, walked to bathe in the water.

He cleansed his body with flowing streams, sweet with perfume. He put on trousers with splendid swan-vine designs and a robe with floating kanok stalks. His side-cloth and moving cloth had fluttering ends; a nine-gem breast-jewel and gold medallion shone. Directional plates of emerald and chains adorned him. Naga armlets and golden bracelets circled him. He wore great bright diamond rings, a radiant jeweled crown, ear ornaments, and hanging garlands. In his hand he held the mighty sword.

He rose from the faceted jeweled throne. The beautiful women all followed him. Moving his hands and walking gracefully, he mounted the great victory chariot.

O pleasure chariot: the curved yoke wrapped in gold was tall and beautiful. Beautiful were the hubs, the wheel-rims, and the wheel-circles; beautiful the shape, the raised crest, and the floating throne. Beautiful were the images around the pavilion; beautiful the mirror panels and hanging kanok designs. Beautiful were the pillars and gem-set plates; beautiful the top, drooping in shining gold. Beautiful were the four horses, white as conch-shells, strong as the horses of the sun. Beautiful was the charioteer, moving his spear gracefully. Beautiful were the high regalia in rows of nine gems. Beautiful were the pipes sounding in thunder. Beautiful were the eager soldiers of the procession. Beautiful were the attendant chariots along the forest line, while the vanguard hastened urgently forward.

When they reached the pleasure garden, he had the brave troops on left and right halt. He led the lovely women down from the shining chariot, together with the ladies, old supervisors, mothers, and beautiful attendants. Moving their hands and walking gracefully, the women followed him.

He wandered and looked at flowering plants, their petals opened and spread everywhere. Some bore ripe fruit, bright to see, and fresh leaves shaded the sunlight. Roses, kalong, prayong, and fragrant flowers bloomed; phikun, phikan, ket, and eaglewood mingled. Great hong flowers, mahat, hiang, ylang-ylang, sandalwood, pipe flowers, champa, and saraphi grew there. Rak, la, roi-lin, pring, prang, sang, sok, banyan, pine, and sali; hidden-fragrance flowers mingled with champi, lychee, lamchiak, and jasmine vines. Clusters of tabaek, lotus, pud-la, karaket, kannika, nom-sawan, maluli, malila, salaeng, butterfly pea, and hibiscus bloomed. Looking as he went, he was greatly delighted. His hand plucked and broke flower stems, and he held them out to the finest young women. He was happy, delighted, and playful with the inner ladies.

A restless, playful mood arose in him, according to his natural breed, and he could not keep still. He removed his bright jeweled crown and handed it to the crown-bearers. Then he leapt and sprang with his strength, climbing up into a tree. He crawled and climbed along it, picked mango fruits, and threw them down to the women. Just then mango sap fell directly onto the glorious monkey's head. He brushed at it many times with his hand, but it did not come away as he wished. He raised both feet and scratched with them; still the sap did not come off. Hands clearing, feet picking in confusion, he acted according to a monkey's nature and thought nothing of it.

Then the soft palace women on left and right looked up into the mango tree and saw Lord Phraya Anuchit scratching his hair with his feet, contrary to the royal form of a shining king. Some laughed, some whispered, some grimaced and pointed in commotion.

Then Phraya Anuchit, chief warrior, glanced and saw the inner women beneath the tree nudging one another, looking at him and smiling, their faces bright with laughter. He was disgraced and ashamed before the attendants; he could not bear to look at their faces fully. "I will go practice vows," he thought, "and be ordained as an ascetic in the middle of the forest, cultivating compassion and meditation. That is better than ruling a victorious city." Having thought this, he leapt and displayed his power, vanishing into darkness so no one could see his body, and flew swiftly through the sky straight to Ayutthaya city.

Then the beautiful palace women, together with the soldiers and army, could not see the mighty monkey lord. Each was alarmed as if someone had cut off her hair. Their faces were dark with tears, and they separated to search every place.

They searched the whole pleasure garden in noisy confusion. They did not find the mighty monkey, and everyone was overwhelmed with grief.

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit reached Ayutthaya city and descended from the sky.

He went straight up to attend at the feet of bow-bearing Phra Narai the great king. Bowing his head in quiet homage, the monkey reported the matter: "You graciously sent me to rule the city, and my head was cooled with rank and honor. The royal palace and city are vast, like a heavenly city of the gods. Riches, power, the white umbrella, and every kind of splendid wealth were bestowed on me. Your favor exceeds the three worlds, greater than father and mother. But the business of kingship is very heavy; it weighs on my breast and burns my heart like fire. I ask to offer Nopburi city beneath the dust of Your Majesty's feet. Your servant will take leave, assume the conduct and form of an ascetic, dwell in the forest mountains, practice vows, and cultivate compassion and meditation."

Then the lord of the three worlds, conqueror of every land, heard bold Hanuman. The sky-passing lord sat still, stunned. Compassion arose in his spirit, and he could hardly open his mouth to speak. He sighed in grief and concern, because his love was beyond thought. He had no strength to oppose him, and gave authoritative command: "Alas, Phraya Anuchit, companion of my life. I love you like the eye on my right side. I intended to make you a sovereign above the kings of every great city. But if you will go practice vows and cultivate merit, I cannot oppose it." Having spoken, he blessed him: "Go and live in lasting happiness."

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, bowed his head with joined hands and received the blessing with joy. He bowed down at the lotus feet of radiant Phra Narai of the solar line and of Phra Lak the king, and the monkey lord crawled out.

When he reached the front court, he displayed his power with a roar that thundered in every direction. He flew leaping up through the clouds with swift mighty strength.

When the discerning monkey reached the mountain pavilion, he descended from the sky and entered the forest hermitage.

He bowed his head in worship at the lotus feet of the rishi and spoke sweet words: "Your servant has come with fixed intention. I hope to practice vows and cultivate merit for the future, dwelling in the holy one's hermitage, cultivating compassion and meditation."

Then wise and brave Phra Thitsaphai heard the son of Phra Phai report the matter and answered: "By a monkey's nature, you cannot observe vows or be ordained as an ascetic. If you, wise one, have faithful intent, then transform your body into a human form, pure and fitting for discipline. I will teach you the conduct and the rite of worship at the fire-pit."

Then radiant Phraya Anuchit heard his teacher and rejoiced. The monkey recited spells and transformed his body.

He changed into the form of a human, pure, beautiful, and shining, with a shape resembling Phra Phai. Then he bowed to the ascetic. He anointed himself with powder, twisted his matted hair, took the ordained form as an ascetic, wore grass-cloth and a girdle, restrained his heart, and controlled his senses. When this was complete, he bowed in worship, took leave at the feet of the great rishi, went up to the mountain peak, and worshiped at the fire-pit.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha had grown to thirteen years of age. His face and marks were bright, and he knew only happiness. No hot grief had ever touched him. He was playful in body and heart, delighting in rank and attendants. At night, when he entered sleep in the pearl-palace chamber, he thought he wanted to go play in the pleasure garden and enjoy great happiness. When moon and stars had moved out of the sky and the sun peered over the mountain, he bathed, put on splendid ornaments, and came to the shining audience hall.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of his radiant royal father and said: "Your beloved son of your life asks leave from the dust of the lotus feet to go look at the noble trees and be happy in the beautiful pleasure garden. When the bright sun slants low, I will return."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard his son ask leave. His love increased a thousandfold. He received his spirit and spoke graciously: "Jewel of my heart, radiant child, if you will go play in the flower garden, let it be as you wish." Having spoken, he commanded Waranisun, kinsman and senior guardian: "Arrange all the mighty troops and take your younger lord to play in happiness."

Then the wise and brave guardian bowed his head, received the royal command, and the demon lord hurried out.

He arranged a diamond-garland procession, according to the station of a royal son's forest outing. One group held matchlock guns and wore blue shirts edged with gold. One group wore sandal-colored shirts and held bows in rows. One group wore fine green shirts and carried gold-banded elephant hooks, moving gracefully. One group wore dark blue shirts, swords at their waists and spears with dark-inlaid sheaths in hand. The black royal horse was harnessed and stationed in place amid dense ranks.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha bowed his head in leave and came to the bathing place.

He bathed his body in streams from jeweled sprinklers, cold drops falling like rain. He wore fragrant perfume blended with nine-gold and flower scent. His trousers had makara-border designs; his robe was bright golden cloth. His side-cloth had splendid swan-vines, and the moving cloth shone with kanok designs. His coat was small-sleeved brocade; his breast-jewel and medallion shone. Directional ruby plates and chains adorned him; naga armlets and golden bracelets circled him. Emerald rings in faceted settings, a radiant diamond circlet, flowers, directional earrings, and ear ornaments adorned him. Moving his hands gracefully, he came to mount the brave horse.

O Sindhava horse: foremost in the world, proud, restless, and brave. Its mane was white and its dark body was delightful, shining black like a blue gem. Its tail was long, ears lifted, chest full, hooves firm, and its whole shape was like a lion. Its small steps and bearing were like a flying swan; when its feet touched earth, its walk looked graceful. It was fitted with complete gold-inlaid gear, jeweled layers shining bright, folded lotus ornaments of glittering gems, and beautiful golden reins held by the rider. Flags, umbrellas, and shining high regalia followed in levels. Drums led in lovely rows, and troops followed to the pleasure garden.

When they arrived, he halted at the jeweled landing, made entirely of pearls. He dismounted from the noble brave horse, and all the boys followed him.

They turned and wandered, looking at trees, with many flowers covering the ground. Buds, clusters, and flowers spread densely, bearing open petals together. Pud-jip, champa, great hong, kalong, sugrom, nom-sawan, lamduan, yom-doi, jasmine vines, phikan, ket, and jeweled flowers spread fragrance. They wandered, plucking flower chains and flower clusters, open and filled with pollen. Some tucked them in, smelled them, and admired the graceful sprays; others snatched them from one another's hands. Some climbed about, picking fruits from every tree by branch and bough: pring, prang, langsat, mango, sali, roi-lin, inchan, kum, ket, custard apple, java plum, and phlong. They poured them into heaps in the middle of the beloved garden, sat in a ring, and ate together in happy delight.

When afternoon reached the third hour and the sun's light burned hot and bright, he invited the asura princes back to the shining pavilion.

Then Waranisun the yaksha looked at the jeweled couch and the vast palace pavilion. He thought of Thao Thotsakan, the yaksha lord, and grief filled him. Tears shook in his eyes; he lowered his face in sorrow and lamentation.

"Alas, Painasuriyawong does not know his true father. He has been deceived into loving that unrighteous one, thinking him his father. He only plays with restless body, full of delight and ease. Wasted is the scion of the twenty-armed lord, mighty above the three worlds. I must devise a stratagem so he learns the truth." Thinking this, he brushed his tears away and then suddenly laughed, making an accusation by his act.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha saw the guardian of his life acting strangely in spirit. He spoke graciously and asked: "Look, elder brother. I saw you lower your face in grief, and then you came to laugh. Why?"

Then the wise guardian heard, sighed deeply, and lowered his face as if unwilling to speak. With yaksha cunning, he pretended to look right and left, then said: "This matter leaves me helpless; it is beyond my power to speak."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard the wise guardian and sat silent, thinking: "The words he has spoken must concern some secret he cannot tell." He took the beloved guardian by the hand and led him into the pleasure-garden pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the seat and spoke sweetly and gently: "Wise elder brother, please make the matter clear to your younger one."

Then Waranisun the yaksha raised joined hands and answered: "Your servant grieved because he thought of the twenty-armed, ten-faced lord of mighty power, whose name was Thotsakan. His glory was vast and supreme. He sustained the city of Lanka, and by his power subdued the three worlds. Among the solar-line yaksha clans, he held tremendous sacred power. Phiphek here was the younger brother born from the same womb as the yaksha king. When war came upon Lanka, the asura joined the side of danger, revealing secret battle stratagems, so that countless kinsmen died, until Thotsakan himself was destroyed. Then Rama gave him rule of the city. He is named Thao Thotsakhiriwong, scion of the bright great diamond Brahma line. But he has no power of his own; he knows only astrological scriptures."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard and was troubled in spirit. The asura asked further: "You cried because you thought of Thotsakan. But why did you laugh? I still do not understand, and my doubt is beyond measure."

Then Waranisun the yaksha embraced the prince at once, grieving as he explained: "The part where I laughed, I will tell you, heart of my heart, crown of affection. But this matter is vast and grave. If the demon king learns of it, I will surely be found at fault, even to the loss of life. You, wise one, must not let the matter spread. Phiphek of the solar line is not your royal father. Thao Thotsakan, who died, that king is your father. If you do not believe what I have told, ask your beloved royal mother. Then you will know the matter clearly, with all stain of doubt ended."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard clearly and no longer doubted the words. The asura sat rigid, stunned. Pain, shame, and anger pressed tightly in his chest, and he heaved a deep sigh. Love was ended; suspicion and disgust arose toward Thao Thotsakhiriwong the kumbhanda. He conceived a fixed hatred and purpose, like a poisoned arrow stuck in the body. He embraced his life-sharing guardian, and together they grieved intensely.

When the sun's light slanted down and sunset turned behind the beautiful mountain edge, he left the jeweled couch and came to mount his horse.

He ordered all the soldiers to move according to the procession lines on left and right. They hurried along the road straight into Lanka city.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha put his arms around him and embraced him, saying: "Jewel of my eyes, balm of my heart, when you went to play in the pleasure garden, were you not happy? Why has your face grown dark? Has some sickness or pain arisen?"

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha bowed his head and answered: "This son went to play in the pleasure garden. It was as delightful as Nandavana until the sun's light grew strong and hot. My dim face was touched by sun and wind; no troublesome fever oppresses me." Having reported this, he bowed at the lotus feet, took leave of the yaksha king, walked gracefully away, and came to his royal mother's palace.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage and prostrated at her shining feet. Tears filled his eyes and he did not speak; he lowered his face and sat still in grief.

Then Lady Montho, beloved above all, saw her son in deep grief. Startled, she embraced her beloved child and received his spirit with great affection. The lovely lady lifted his hair onto her lap, stroked him with both hands, kissed his face, and spoke by royal command: "You went to see the garden and returned. Who said anything to you, beautiful one, that you now bear grief? Your mother does not understand in her spirit."

Then brave and wise Painasuriyawong sobbed as he answered: "This matter is because my heart is hurt. My royal mother cannot be concerned with love for her child, or she should not have kept the truth silent and failed to make it clear. The crown of the demon city, famous and brave in every direction, named Thotsian the asura, was the father of your beloved son. How did he pass away to heaven, and how did Phiphek come to rule the kingdom? This matter fills me with doubt. Tell your beloved son clearly."

Then Lady Montho, full of pity, heard the royal prince, her son, plead to know the events of the past. The queen sat still, stunned in thought, her mind burning as if struck by lightning. After a time she spoke: "Jewel of your mother's eyes, heart of my heart, why have you come to speak like this? This is not something for you to suspect. Do not grieve and long; remain in lasting happiness."

Then Painasuriyawong, skilled in war, heard his royal mother and his heart burned like poisoned fire. Agitation spread through all his body, skin, flesh, and blood. His anger became beyond thought, and he sighed, lamented, and wept.

"Alas, wasted is my birth from Brahma's line, if I do not know my own royal father. The three worlds will mock and deride me; my hurt is beyond description. To live on is shame beyond thought. Better to end my life." Lamenting, he lowered his face in grief as if he would lose all senses.

Then beautiful soft Lady Montho saw her beloved child of her own life fall silent in great grief. She was startled as if Death had come to tear open her breast and draw out her entrails. She could no longer hide the matter. The lady embraced the prince, soothing him and brushing away his tears. Then she told him all the causes from the past: "Phiphek, the close younger brother who plotted crookedly, came to rule and continue the line in Lanka. The avatar gave this mother to him to be his beloved queen. Thao Thotsakhiriwong the asura did not know that I was pregnant. He thought by understanding that you were his child, and so loved you utterly without disgust. Do not grieve in lamentation. Jewel of my eyes, entrust yourself to him properly."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard and was enraged beyond measure. The asura bowed and asked: "The solar-line kin and friends of my royal father, all mighty enough to shake the earth, were they all ended in war by the enemies, or does anyone remain, royal mother?"

Then soft and beloved Lady Montho heard and explained: "Your father's line is very large. But when war came and struck the city, they marched out to fight bravely. Close kin, friends, and beloved companions died by the opposing enemies beyond counting, scattered thick as the Akanittha heaven. Only one life-companion friend remains, dwelling as ruler of Maliwan city. That king has four faces and eight hands; his name is mighty Cakkrawat. The two cities had kept truth with one another and shared the golden earth for a long time."

Then brave-hearted Painasuriyawong heard his noble royal mother. He bowed at her lotus feet and said: "This Phiphek is very much a traitor. How can I remain and look at his face? I am a noble male by birth. I wish to take leave at my royal mother's feet and go live with my father's friend until I grow larger and stronger. After a time she spoke: "Jewel of your mother's eyes, radiant one, this Phra Rama of the solar line is the four-armed Phra Chakri. He incarnated from the Ocean of Milk. His fierce power is supreme through his arrows, and the king is famed for glory everywhere, a pillar of the earth. The monkeys are all sons of gods who descended to be soldiers; each one's power is like Death, and they subdued the demons everywhere. Your royal father was of Brahma's line; Intharachit, his glorious elder brother, Kumpakan the king, your uncle, and all his kin and friends held mighty power. They had subdued the three worlds and heaven. Their powers and rites differed from one another, yet they all lost life by Rama's victory arrow. As for Thao Cakkrawat, how could he withstand that lord's hand? He is destined only to lose his life by the power of the Garuda-mounted king. Once Mahaban came with armies countless as the ocean, and Rama sent a fierce powerful warrior named Vayu's son, who came to help Phiphek in battle and killed Mahaban. Do not be careless toward the feet of the righteous lord. Jewel of my heart, entrust yourself properly."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard his royal mother, and it was as if fire touched his heart. His anger was intense beyond all anger; he thought he must avenge it somehow. Forced to accept her command for the moment, he bowed and hurried away.

He went straight to the splendid shining bedchamber and called his life-sharing guardian in to speak together, the two of them alone. "I questioned my royal mother," he said, "and she told the same story as you. Now my father's beloved friend is very mighty, ruling Maliwan city. His power subdues the three worlds. His name is Cakkrawat, yaksha king, four-faced and eight-handed, victorious and brave. The fourfold armies are all bold and strong. We will go together to attend the demon king and make the matter known at his feet."

Then the guardian of rank heard and rejoiced. The asura answered: "Beloved younger lord, wise and brave, the plan is exactly in my heart. But for the two of us to go to Maliwan city, the road is extremely difficult. Acid-fire and acid-water block it as checkpoints. Whoever passes into that place, hundreds and thousands of them, loses life. Only Phra Kal the siddha has power to undo it. You should devise a plan and ask leave to go, saying that you will study the victory arts with the teacher. Then we can secretly go together to the royal city of Maliwan. But Thao Cakkrawat the demon king once drank victory wine together with your royal father from a bright jeweled cup. We must obtain it as the token and offer it to the lord of Maliwan city."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard the guardian of his life speak words that matched his heart. When he thought of his royal father, the asura gave a great sigh. They consulted together every day, but did not let anyone see their grief. When it was time to play, he went out and played, though by necessity without true happiness. At night, when he entered the bed, he crossed his arms over his face and lay stunned in thought.

He rolled back and forth in confusion, unable to sleep soundly, until the koel urged on the sun and golden light shone bright. Then he cleansed himself, bathed, and put on ornaments, gleaming like the moon. He left the bright jeweled chamber and went to attend the asura king.
