Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the eighty-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Painasuriyawong deceiving Phiphek and Montho to leave Lanka, learning Phra Kal's spells to cross the acid-fire and acid-water gates, reaching Cakkrawat of Maliwan with Thotsakan's jeweled cup, Cakkrawat marching on Lanka, defeating Phiphek with the naga-arrow, and imprisoning him after Painasuriyawong asks that his foster-father be spared.

Translation

Painasuriyawong Brings Cakkrawat to Lanka

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw his son come up. The asura was filled with joy. With both arms he lifted Painasuriyawong onto his lap, held him, stroked him, kissed his hair and face, and gave royal command: "I intend to make you crown of the royal city of Lanka, to continue the solar glory in the demon line and be chief among the kumbhandas."

Then Painasuriyawong heard the words as if an arrow pierced his ear. Forcing his heart, he bowed and reported: "Your Majesty's mercy and compassion are boundless. This son is still only growing; I have no power or might in anything. I ask leave at your feet to go study the victorious bow-arts in the hermitage of Phra Kal the sage. May the king show mercy."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard his son ask leave and rejoiced, pleased that it matched his thought. Receiving his spirit, he answered: "If you will study the victory arrow with the ascetic master and become skilled in cultivating power, may every purpose be fulfilled."

Then brave-hearted Painasuriyawong, having obtained what his wicked heart desired, bowed at the lotus feet and hurried away.

When he reached his royal mother's palace, he raised joined hands above his head and reported: "The royal father has allowed me to go study the victory arts in the hermitage of Phra Kal the ascetic, the great teacher who keeps vows. Your beloved son will take leave to dwell in the forest, according to the royal command."

Then Lady Montho, mistress of pity, heard the royal prince, her son. The noble lady rejoiced and gave blessing: "As you go to study the rishi's arrow-science, may sickness and danger not trouble you. May you have lasting happiness."

Then Painasuriyawong, skilled in war, bowed his head, accepted the blessing, and did not let his mother suspect. The asura then took the jeweled cup; when he had it, he hid it in his garment. Moving his hands and walking gracefully, he came to the guardian who shared his heart.

He sat down and whispered at his ear: "I have managed to steal the cup." Having spoken, the two went away from victorious Lanka city.

They crossed streams, passed mountains and forest ridges, and reached the rishi's hermitage. They entered with joyful hearts and raised joined hands in worship to the ascetic.

Then Phra Kal the ascetic saw Prince Painasuriyawong, son of Thao Thotsakhiriwong the asura, coming out with Waranisun, his kinsman. Looking at their faces, he spoke: "For what purpose have you come here?"

Then the discerning prince joined his hands and explained: "The royal father has sent me to attend at the lotus feet of Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, in the city of Maliwan. Therefore I have come to ask blessing from the holy one and to learn the great sixteenfold spell that neutralizes the acid-water and acid-fire guarding the checkpoints. When this is done, I will hurry away. May the holy one show mercy."

Then the meditation-powerful teacher had no suspicion in his spirit and answered: "Since my beloved grandson has come to learn spells, I will teach the stratagems and methods. Fix the syllables and steps firmly in your heart." Then he taught him every day and night.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha served the sage and lived in the hut for many days. Morning and evening he studied the sacred spells, observed them, and memorized every verse. When this was finished, he took leave of the siddha, and the two went together toward Maliwan city.

They crossed streams, fields, hollows, hills, and forest ridges. When they reached the checkpoint, they saw the kumbhandas performing a rite that had become final fire, as if it would burn the three worlds. Flames spread, hot, bright, and strong. Painasuriyawong recited the spell to hide them from the demons' eyes and to remove the poison of the fiery danger.

When the three rounds were complete, their shadows disappeared and neither body could be seen. The acid-fire grew cool by power, and the asuras hurried through.

They reached the inner checkpoint and looked out. They saw yakshas performing a rite to summon nagas, making them rise and spit terrible poison. Acid-water roared and flowed in torrents, coiling, deep, and wide. Thinking of the victorious teacher's kindness, he steadied his heart and recited the spell.

When it was done, he took sand in his hand and scattered it three times. By the power of the fierce spell, the stream dried and vanished at once. The two passed beyond the acid-water gate, winding along the foot of the mountain, crossing fields, hollows, and forest by the road.

They looked at the flocking birds as they went. Parrots perched on kannika branches; nok-khla perched on khlai in rows. Doves settled on salaengphan; benjawan birds called from cardamom. Owls perched on mok and watched; quails perched beside khae in pairs. Mynas hopped and chattered on kaew; small birds perched on nests, preening tails. Peafowl led their flock to perch on yang; nok-lang perched beside the bank. Nori birds flew and settled on rak; wind-eaters perched on bamboo and then leapt away. Sattawa birds perched on flowering vines; doves called loudly from khoi. Talon-fang birds hid in rok-fa; kaling birds perched on kalong boughs. Egrets perched on prayong trees, and swans settled in rows on hiang.

Looking as they went, they hurried through forest and mountain. When the sun sank toward evening, they stopped and slept hotly through the night.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha enjoyed vast blessed wealth and sustained Maliwan city. He had goods, attendants, and brave armies, and his fierce power was like the fire at the end of an age. None in the three worlds could withstand him. At night he entered sleep on a radiant nine-gem couch, happy and secure. The king drifted into sleep.

In the last watch, when the moon was about to turn behind the mountain edge, he dreamed that the sun's disk, bright and stainless in its strong light, fell from the sky. All its radiance vanished, and darkness covered earth, sky, and land. Then another sun rose, yellow and gleaming but not clear, moving through the middle of the sky. Then a wise forest hunter lifted a beautiful lotus and bowed his head, offering it into the king's hand. The king wore it, smelled its pollen, and the flower's petals fell into his hand. The king started awake at once.

He cleansed himself, bathed, and put on ornaments, shining with bright radiance. Moving his hands and walking gracefully, he went out to the royal audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. Ministers and priests attended together, bowing everywhere. Then he gave royal command to the chief astrologers: "Tonight I dreamed a strange dream." He explained it all from beginning to end.

Then the honored chief astrologer received the command and examined it according to the manuals of prediction. He knew it was a fore-sign, unusual in the way of divine omen. Seeing it clearly and certainly, he joined his hands and reported with wisdom: "The dream in which the sun's bright burning disk fell from the sky and darkness covered the whole earth means that a mighty friend, intimate with Your Majesty's lotus feet, has reached the end of life, and the people and ministers are troubled. The second sun that rose in its place, shining with soft yellow light, means the one who now rules that city, whose power in war is not famed. The forest hunter who brought the golden lotus and offered it beneath the lotus feet, and Your Majesty admired and smelled its sweet scent until the petals fell away, means that someone will bring a royal prince, of the line of the departed Brahma-born one, to take refuge in Your Majesty's presence. This is firm, as I predict."

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, heard the astrologers and grew troubled. The king sat thinking silently: "This dream of mine that the astrologers interpreted, which city-friend can it mean?" He was bewildered and uncertain in heart, stunned and speechless.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha, when dawn had brightened the night, hurried onward with his guardian.

When they reached Maliwan city, the kumbhandas were filled with joy. They walked together straight to the inner council hall.

He sat down and spoke to the great chief ministers: "The crown of mighty Lanka, beloved life-friend of the demon king, has sent me to report beneath the lotus feet of the world-ruling lord of the royal city of Maliwan, by the path of ancient alliance. Please lead me in to attend the king."

Then the chief yaksha ministers learned the royal matter and rejoiced. They went together to the royal audience hall.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of mighty Thao Cakkrawat and reported: "Your life-sharing friend who ruled the realm of Lanka has sent this young prince together with Waranisun the yaksha to present royal business beneath the feet of the king."

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, saw the tender and lovely prince and heard the name of Thotsakan spoken. Startled, he thought, "This is like the astrologers' reading of my dream." Seeing and thinking, he found it wondrous. The kumbhanda asked: "Is the Brahma-line lord still in any comfort? What is your name? Whose son are you, prince? Your form is like mighty Intharachit; I am deeply doubtful. What business did my friend send you for?"

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard the royal words, joined his hands, and answered the royal command: "The Brahma-line lord, crown of royal Lanka, has now lost his life, destroyed in war by wicked human enemies. His kin, clan, and friends all died by arrow-light. Phiphek now rules the city, and the whole realm is troubled. Your servant's name is Painasuriyawong, scion of ten-faced Thotsakan the yaksha. When my royal father gave up life, I was still in the womb. When I grew older, I learned that my royal father had died. I burn with anger at unrighteous Phiphek. He is an ungrateful man. I cannot bear to look at his face fully; I cannot hear his voice without pain in my ears. Hurt and shame beyond knowing are like standing in the middle of fire. I learned that Your Majesty was the radiant friend's friend of my royal father. Waranisun and I secretly fled to attend your feet and ask the shelter of your power as the jeweled umbrella above our heads." Speaking, he offered the jeweled cup, then sobbed in grief.

Then mighty Thao Cakkrawat heard the prince's grieving lament and grew angry as if final fire had touched his heart. He sprang up from the throne-seat and stamped his foot so the earth seemed to shake. "That vile Phiphek! How could he do such a thing? Wasted is his birth from the same womb, for he became unrighteous and betrayed his elder brother. Ugly, greedy beyond measure, he failed the Brahma line. I will cut and destroy him, cut off his arms and head, fitting what he did when he killed the solar-line clan." Looking at the small child, he was moved; tears flooded his eyes and he grieved. Thinking of his life-sharing friend, he received the prince's spirit, placed him on his lap with love, kissed his face, and spoke: "I did not know that your royal father had lost his life in war and battle. The proud and arrogant humans make me so angry my eyes almost bleed. Do not be sorrowful or hurt in heart. I will march out and kill them to death." Having spoken, he commanded the chief minister to prepare the armies on left and right. "I will go to victorious Lanka and slaughter the enemy rulers."

Then the brave-hearted chief minister bowed his head, received the royal command, and left the audience hall.

He mustered the fourfold army, choosing only bold and sturdy men. Elephant officers rode elephants as vanguard, holding elephant-hooks in graceful display. Horse officers rode steeds, hands holding shining golden spears. Chariot officers rode shining golden chariots, holding bows with drawn strings. Commanders arranged the battle troops, all fierce and brave, swinging weapons like final fire, until the whole city roared in confusion. They also prepared the splendid royal chariot, harnessed with royal lions, and set it at the shining jeweled landing according to the marching procession.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, when dawn showed the sun's light, came to the bathing place.

Water scattered like rain, and he wore fragrant perfumes spreading sweet scent. He put on trousers patterned with red gems and a robe with dancing kinnari designs. His side-cloth and moving cloth had swan-vines; his coat was bright green-gold cloth. A yellow-gem breast-jewel, directional plates, chains, golden bracelets, naga armlets, and blood-red gem rings adorned him. His four heads wore bright crowns, with directional flowers and jeweled ear ornaments. His eight hands held the eight weapons, swinging with fierce power and showing courage. Beautiful like victorious Vessuvan, he took the prince by the hand and came to mount the chariot.

O jeweled chariot: the hubs and wheel-rims shone with emerald. Curved and beautiful, with streamers at the tips, its side-panels were ringed with images around the throne. Jeweled pillars, dragon-kanok turns, and supports for an upturned lotus pavilion stood bright. Mirror panels and patterned rails shone, and red-gem finials topped the spire. Two thousand royal lions were harnessed to it; charioteers moved their spears in display. Front flags led the procession; high regalia shielded the sunlight. Pipes, gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches thundered in deep commotion. Soldiers shouted until the sound rolled and shook; they drove and hurried one another forward.

They crossed watercourses, fields, hollows, and mountains, following the great forest road. Near the border of mighty Lanka, the king had the army halt.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha rejoiced because it matched his thought. He bowed and reported to the asura king: "At first your son tricked Phiphek in taking leave, saying that I would study the victory arts with the rishi named Phra Kal in the forest mountains. Thus I was able to attend the world-ruling lord and make the matter clear beneath your lotus feet. Now Your Majesty has raised the tenfold armies in such crowds that the earth seems to shake. If Phiphek the yaksha learns that I went to invite Your Majesty here, my royal mother will suffer. Your beloved son asks leave at the lotus feet to go into Lanka first and remove the worry that troubles me. May the king show mercy."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the prince's words. The asura smiled with a bright face, stroked his back, and said: "Wise and sharp beloved child, it is proper for you to go in first. But do not be careless. Watch that unrighteous Phiphek; perhaps he will secretly flee. I will march in after you, seize him, and kill him."

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha heard the royal command and rejoiced. He bowed down at the lotus feet, took leave of the yaksha king, descended from the jeweled chariot, and hurried away with his guardian.

When he arrived, he went up to attend Thao Thotsakhiriwong, bowed his head in homage amid the kumbhanda ministers.

Then Phiphek the yaksha king saw his son come in and rejoiced. The asura had no suspicion in mind and loved him intimately as his own yaksha child. He embraced him, kissed him, and stroked his whole body, then asked: "Have you finished learning the teacher's arts, and are you skilled now? I have longed for you with concern and waited every day without fail."

Then Painasuriyawong bowed his head in feigned homage and answered: "This son took leave at the feet of my radiant royal father and went out to study the sage's arts in the forest mountains. I learned every kind of science, spell, stratagem, and method completely, as my heart desired. Thinking of Your Majesty, I returned." Having reported this, he took leave at the lotus feet of Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, moved his hands gracefully, and left the shining audience hall.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, when dawn brightened the earth, ordered the army to march quickly.

They traveled for many days, crossed streams, river-landings, and great forest, passed the checkpoints and roads, and reached victorious Lanka. He had the fourfold army halt and set itself down on left and right, according to the battle formation in a vast field of victory.

Then he issued an authoritative command to brave-hearted Vishnurach and Nonthakan the asura: "You two wise ones, go into the victorious city and tell that yaksha Phiphek: I, radiant in power, crown of Maliwan, have come to visit my friend. I learned that his life was lost and that Phiphek, his womb-born younger brother, now rules the prosperous realm. Let him come and bow to me, the friend of his elder brother. If he resists the royal command, his life will be crushed and destroyed."

Then the two brave ministers bowed their heads, received the royal command, prostrated at the lotus feet, and hurried away.

When they reached the inside of the city, they sought out great Mahothon and reported the matter according to the command they had received.

Then honored Mahothon heard and was stunned through his whole body; his face lost its senses. "This time," he thought, "Lanka city will suffer burning trouble." Having thought this, he led the two ministers into the royal audience hall.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of mighty Thao Thotsakhiriwong and reported: "The lord of Maliwan city has brought his forces here and is stationed outside the great city. He has sent two yakshas to invite the sky-passing lord to attend the kumbhanda king."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong learned that the lord of Maliwan had brought kumbhanda forces. The asura sat stunned and thinking, his heart hot as if struck by an arrow. "I rule this city, but my fighting power is weak. Therefore hostile enemy kings come to invade the border of the kingdom. Before, Mahaban the yaksha lord became my enemy and came to fight. The holy Phra Narai sent the son of Phra Phai in time to help me in war, and he killed him. This time Cakkrawat, mighty in battle, four-faced and eight-handed, is fierce and brave, and his forces cover the earth. How shall I plan this war? My beloved son and grandson are still both very young. I must go out and fight to preserve honor in the three worlds." Having thought this, he gave royal command: "Listen, two yaksha soldiers. Go tell the lord of Maliwan city that I am dust beneath the feet of radiant Phra Narai the great king. I do not associate with wicked, unrighteous men who are vile and inauspicious."

Then the two yaksha ministers heard the royal words, raised joined hands, and hurried out.

When they arrived, they bowed with joined hands and reported to Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha everything according to the royal command of Phiphek the kumbhanda.

Then mighty Thao Cakkrawat heard and grew angry like final fire. He stamped his foot with terrible force. His eight hands clapped with thunder, his four mouths roared until all shook, and his eight eyes were like rising suns. "That arrogant Phiphek! Good, now we shall see one another. I will cut off his head and hair and impale them outside the gate, fitting the face of that wicked-hearted one." Having spoken, he mounted the royal chariot and set the fourfold army in motion from its resting place beside the stream, ready to fight the asura.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, when the two asura ministers had returned from the victory hall, gave royal command to the chief demon ministers: "Prepare the mighty armies. I will go fight the army of Maliwan."

Then diligent Mahothon the minister received the kumbhanda king's command, paid homage, and came out.

He mustered the fourfold army, choosing only bold and brave men. Elephant officers rode tusked victory elephants, with splendid elephant-gear bound on. Horse officers rode Sindhava horses, prancing and champing, fierce and skilled in war. Chariot officers rode three-yoked chariots, harnessed with lions and tigers. Commanders prepared the battle troops in loud confusion. They could hardly complete the roster and pressed the muster-officers in chaos. Company leaders inspected and searched for common soldiers; when this man was caught, that man vanished. They bound, tied, and struck them in confusion. Some brought mothers-in-law, wives, and children along.

At last the battle formation was complete, with left and right wings in full order. They stood along the rows of the road, waiting to receive the asura king.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha left the jeweled throne and came to the bathing pool.

Jeweled sprinklers scattered water like rain, and he wore perfume blended with pollen. He put on curved-bordered trousers and a robe with kinnara-kanok patterns. His moving cloth was divine gold with curling stalks; his side-cloth was emerald, spaced with pearls. His brocade coat had vine patterns and carved jeweled armor. Directional plates, hanging breast-jewel, necklaces, three chains, ruby-hinged belt, golden bracelets, and dragon armlets adorned him. Yellow diamond rings in faceted settings shone on all ten fingers. He wore the great crown, flower clusters, bright jeweled earrings, and ear ornaments. A golden garland hung down, and in his right hand he held the royal bow. Beautiful like mighty Brahma, he walked to mount the victory chariot.

O royal chariot: the hubs and wheels were emerald gems. Its curved yoke was soft and graceful, and the tiered golden throne rose in steps. Royal lions were harnessed, leaping and roaring. The charioteer held a tasselled spear, urging and driving as swiftly as wind. Tiered umbrellas and streamers adorned it; bright flags and pennants snapped. Yak-tail fans and sunshades shone with gems; rows of drums and gongs answered one another. Trumpets, conches, and bronze gongs sounded loudly. Soldiers shouted until the rolling sound shook; dust blew up in clouds like smoke as they drove the army forward.

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, saw Phiphek in his three-yoked chariot leading the army out. Furious, trembling with rage, grinding his teeth, he stamped his foot and gave royal command, urging the vanguard to attack.

Then Nonthakan the yaksha received the asura king's command and drove the soldiers in to battle.

Elephant officers drove elephants to pursue and stab, hands swinging elephant-hooks like turning discs. Horse officers drove horses to cut through, shooting poisoned arrows from bows. Chariot officers drove war chariots, shouting in thunder up to Dusit. Commanders drove their troops close in, pursuing without thought of death.

Then all the Lanka troops separated and came out to meet them in confusion. Common soldiers and officers pressed continually forward.

Elephant officers separated elephants to meet elephants, firing "heron-leg" shots face to face. Horse officers galloped horses out to meet horses, fleeing and pursuing in turmoil. Chariot officers drove chariots against chariots, turning and shooting in noisy confusion. Commanders drove troops against troops, stabbing and cutting in disorder, with neither side fleeing.

Then diligent Nonthakan the minister saw army striking army in close battle, and he drove the Maliwan troops in.

They broke hard, surged in, and attacked. The Lanka soldiers fell back, unable to withstand them, then ran and scattered in ruin through the whole victory army, without any order in the dusk of battle.

Then Mahothon the demon yaksha saw the army broken and scattered. Angry, he drove his troops in to meet them.

They fought in a crush, struggling and attacking, surging in to seize. The Maliwan troops in every division broke, died, and were shattered senseless.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his warriors lose the attack. The asura grew angry like final fire. His eight arms swung weapons, displaying fierce brave power. He stamped his foot, urged the chariot in a rush, and drove in to fight the Lanka troops.

His eight hands struck and killed. The kumbhandas broke and fled, not waiting face to face. They fell dead, scattered everywhere by the strength of the asura's power.

When he came near the royal chariot of Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, he shouted in proclamation: "Listen, unrighteous Phiphek. Why did you betray and plot crookedly in deluded heart against your elder brother, born from the same womb, who had shown you kindness? Your kin, clan, and friends all lost their lives, and you gained the wealth of Lanka, yet still your heart was not satisfied. I am the friend of your elder brother, whether things were wrong or right I did not know, and so I came out of concern to ask the evil and good clearly. But you, proud one, came out with an army to fight me, your elder. You are faithless and vile. I will wash away your life and make you die."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard and grew fiercely angry. Pointing at his face, he shouted back: "Listen, Cakkrawat the asura. This is no affair of yours. My elder brother died because his greed passed all measure. He stole beloved Phra Lakshmi, and the four-armed lord therefore came and killed him. I was upright and thought no evil, so the sky-passing lord gave me rule of the city, continuing the royal solar line, the bright Brahma-king line. You did not come speaking peacefully, so I raised the army and came out to fight."

Then mighty Thao Cakkrawat heard, ground his teeth, and trembled with anger. He cried: "Look, base one! Your words are arrogant and coarse. You harden your face and speak without shame; who would count you as good? You bury your head as a human's servant because you acted wickedly against your elder brother. You have ruined your asura birth and line. I will wash away your life and end it." Having spoken, he gave royal command to brave-hearted Lothan the asura, ordering him to drive the divine jeweled chariot rushing in to fight.

Then Phraya Phiphek, skilled in war, looked and saw the eight-armed king swinging his bow and driving his chariot in. Furious like final fire, grinding his teeth, he ordered his splendid royal chariot to be driven in to meet that power at once.

They struck left and swept right in confusion, both enduring with pride. Each stabbed, each cut, battling face to face, until both fell down from their jeweled chariots together.

Then mighty Thao Cakkrawat was angry, grinding his teeth. The kumbhanda rushed and thrust forward.

His right foot stepped on Phiphek's left knee; he shifted and changed positions, striking with the mighty bow. It hit Phraya Phiphek many times.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, wounded throughout his body in battle, grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. He drew the potent arrow onto the string, thinking of mighty Phra Narai's favor, aimed firmly, pulled, and shot.

By the glory of supreme Phra Chakrit, all ten directions shook in fear. The radiant arrow displayed great power and struck Cakkrawat the asura.

Then the eight-armed yaksha king, struck by the arrow and wounded through his body, recited dazzling spells.

When the three rounds were complete, he stroked downward, and the pain in his whole body vanished. There was no wound on his body. He took up an arrow, set it on the string, and shot it.

Its sound was like thunder. It became a great naga king with seven heads, spitting venom as fire-smoke, rushing to bind Phiphek the asura.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha was bound by the naga over his whole body and fell to the earth.

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat had victory over Phiphek the demon lord and rejoiced as if he had gained half the sky. He clapped his hands and laughed loudly, commanding bold royal guards: "Seize Phiphek the asura and bring him here. I will look at his face."

Having commanded, he mounted the royal chariot, set the fourfold army in motion, and went straight to the kumbhanda pavilion, shouting until sky and earth thundered.

Then Painasuriyawong the yaksha, in Lanka city with his guardian, listened for news of victory. When he learned that Thao Cakkrawat had bound and captured Phiphek, he rejoiced, and they went out together to the victorious army camp of the kumbhandas.

When they arrived, they went up to attend at the lotus feet of mighty Thao Cakkrawat, bowing their heads in homage amid the gathered soldiers.

Then the four-faced yaksha king saw the prince arrive and rejoiced. He gave command: "Look, beloved child, young lord, jewel of my eyes. That vile Phiphek came to win battle but was defeated by my power. I captured him with the naga-arrow. I will kill him, end his body, and impale him inside Lanka, so no one looks to him as an example."

Then mighty Painasuriyawong heard the kumbhanda's royal command, bowed, and answered: "Your Majesty's mercy and compassion are favor heaped above my head. Your son asks to rely on the king's power until life dies. Phiphek's offense is grave, and his life should properly end. But he has the merit of having raised your son and not left him anxious or troubled. If you destroy his life, the three worlds may blame it. Do not strike and kill him. May the king show mercy."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the prince's words and felt great joy. He embraced him, received his spirit, lifted him onto his lap, held him, stroked him, and kissed his hair and face: "Beloved child of my heart, you speak wisely and endearingly. No one can equal your gratitude. Since you have asked pardon for him, your father grants it as you wish. But I will torment him and make him suffer fittingly." Having spoken, he gave royal command to the asura executioners: "Take Phiphek away, put him in prison, and fasten him firmly. Let no one go in or out to meet him until his life is gone." Having spoken, he ascended the chariot throne, splendid with pearls, and ordered the demon army to move into the royal seat of Lanka.

When he arrived, he halted at the golden landing, descended from the royal chariot, moved his hands and walked gracefully, and went up into the shining great palace.

Then soft Lady Montho, demon beauty, learned that the son of her life had secretly gone to Maliwan city, invited Thao Cakkrawat the asura, raised the battle armies, captured Phraya Phiphek the kumbhanda, and had now come with him into the inner palace. She feared the avatar's power and gave a great sigh. If she remained silent and did not go out, she feared danger from the asura king. Therefore she gave royal command, called the beautiful ladies on left and right, and walked gracefully to attend the kumbhanda king.

When she arrived, she bowed at the lotus feet of mighty Thao Cakkrawat, together with the palace women and attendants, waiting to hear the asura's command.
