This is the eighty-ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thao Cakkrawat crowning Painasuriyawong as Thao Thotsaphin in Lanka, Asuraphat seeking Hanuman after Cakkrawat's insult and Phiphek's imprisonment, Hanuman returning from ascetic practice to report the matter to Phra Rama, Rama reading the dream-omen of Lanka's trouble, and Bharata, Shatrughna, and the monkey kings mustering for the new campaign.

Asuraphat Finds Hanuman

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw Lady Montho and rejoiced. He gave royal command: "Listen, queen of my beloved friend, graceful lady, young and lovely. Lanka and the victorious royal city of Maliwan have kept truth between them without wavering, like a sheet of shining gold. We have shared happiness and sorrow, shared life and breath for a long time. When enemies pressed on the city, fought, struck, and broke it, why did my friend not send demon ministers to tell me? The whole solar line and clan died, beyond counting. Only because the royal son of high glory secretly came to tell the cause did I raise my army."

Then Lady Montho, highest in beauty, heard the royal command and answered his words in grief: "When the war came and pressed upon the city, there was misery and burning pain as if fire seared us. From the beginning of the fighting and killing, there was not one free night or day. Glorious friends, kinsmen, and allies in every realm, near and far, were summoned to help us fight the enemy. Each army was countless as the sea, but they were defeated by the humans and their perfected arrows. Karma blocked us from thinking in time of Your Majesty, the powerful one. As for Painasuriyawong, the one beloved royal son, I entrust him beneath your feet. May the sky-ruling lord show mercy."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard Queen Montho and was filled with joy, as if he had gained estates, wealth, attendants, and all the three worlds. Looking at the son of his beloved friend, the yaksha lord gave royal command: "Now the work of war is finished. I will set beloved Painasuriyawong over the realm of Lanka, to continue the line of the Brahma-born lord."

Having spoken, he gave an edict and ordered the four royal priests: "Find an auspicious hour and minute that fits the prince's age."

Then the brave chief astrologers bowed their heads, received the royal command, and took up their slate boards. They calculated the moon, multiplied and divided the months, days, and age, and checked them against the prince's horoscope. Saturn stood eleventh from the ascendant. Jupiter was auspicious but had fallen at the gate. He would rule the heavenly kingdom; yet next month Rahu would pause and fold over the ascendant in Pisces. Mars reaching the moon would bring a deathly stroke. The great planets were wholly disturbed and dangerous. Even if this touched Lord Indra himself, crown of the hosts of gods, he would have to fall from his place and would not long remain in rank. Phiphek the asura would return to rule Lanka again. Having thought it through, they reported at once: "Tomorrow at dawn is the great auspicious hour. It fits the victorious prince and the horoscope of the city. He may rule the stores and sovereignty; fame and honor will increase, wealth and estates will prosper, and the people of the city will have lasting happiness."

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, heard the astrologers' prediction and rejoiced. The king gave royal command to the four demon ministers: "Prepare the royal rite according to the ancient order."

Then the honored ministers bowed their heads, received the royal command, took leave in homage, and went out.

They arranged the royal palace, set screens, tied curtains on both sides, and hung the ceiling with garlands and delicate perfumed tassels. On the lower floor they spread fine carpets and laid out royal lion skins. They prepared the water vessels of the Sithandorn waters, the ornamented conches and ritual jars, the shining gold and crystal mirrors, seven-tiered offerings on left and right, and the splendid royal regalia. A great white umbrella was raised above the place for the head-anointing bath, according to the line of mighty Brahma. When every station was prepared, the royal ceremony was complete.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, when golden light shone over sky and earth, rose from the couch where he had slept. He ordered Painasuriyawong, the beloved single royal son, to cleanse and bathe in sacred water in time for the fixed hour.

Then Painasuriyawong, skilled in war, bowed his head and received the command of his father. He walked to the bathing place.

The attendants opened the golden lotus pipes, and spray scattered like falling rain. He bathed in fragrant scented water blended with flower pollen. He wore glass-patterned lower cloth with upturned hems, raised brocade, and leaf-scroll designs; side panels with swan-vine patterns; and glittering hanging panels set with rows of gems. His upper robe was striped brocade on a purple ground. An emerald breast ornament shone on him. Direction-plates and chased clasps were carved with designs. Three diamond chains crossed his chest, with armlets, bracelets shaped as serpents, and rings set in petal mounts. He wore the great crown with flowers at the side, radiant crystal earrings and ear ornaments. Beautiful in body, rank, and splendor, moving like a royal lion, he walked with graceful steps to his father.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha looked on the features and face of Painasuriyawong the asura. He was beautiful in rank, splendor, and bearing, like his elder brother Intharachit, fit to rule the realm and continue the glory of the solar Brahma-line. Speaking, he led the royal son down from the pearl seat. Lady Montho, the lovely one, and the multitude of palace women followed.

When they reached the great palace, with the royal solar line assembled, they seated him on the splendid throne beneath the radiant great white umbrella.

Then the four old royal priests, astrologers, elders, demon chiefs, hermits, and brahmans took the conch water and jar water and poured the head-anointing bath over the royal prince. Then they chanted the Vedas together.

"The hour is won, the hour is won!" The astrologers opened the soul-calling offerings. Victory gongs thundered as the sign, and trumpets and conches sounded in uproar.

The old priests lit candles and passed the flame around to the right. Ministers, courtiers, officers, and royal kin received and handed it onward in turn.

When the seventh circuit was complete according to the rule of the ritual manuals, the old astrologer put out the flame and waved the smoke straight toward him three times. Then he marked the prince's face with auspicious powder so that rank and glory would flourish, and gave blessings of welfare while the sound rose loud in commotion.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha bestowed the heavenly wealth, ministers, subjects, and people on Painasuriyawong, skilled in war, so he would continue the Brahma-line. He named him Thao Thotsaphin Ritthiron, joining the name to that of his father. Then he gave counsel in sweet words: "You who will rule sovereignty, stand firm in the ten royal virtues. Have no delusion or partiality. The solar-line kin and friends, distant and near, should be cultivated and raised with care. As for attendants, ministers, officers, and victorious troops, whoever has merit should be raised in rank and rewarded. Sustain all forces and subjects according to the customs of ancient time." Having spoken, he gave him the royal bow, mighty in power, able to subdue every place. "It is called Banlai Cakkrawan. Keep it to destroy enemies."

Then Thotsaphin Sitthisak the yaksha bowed and received the bow with joy. He reported with quick wisdom: "Your Majesty's mercy and kindness are without end. I ask to carry your power above my head until life leaves me."

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat, having finished giving sovereignty and wealth, was glad and delighted. The demon king moved gracefully from the jeweled throne, together with the host of soldiers and ministers, and went to the residence of the kumbhandas.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong, fashioned in suffering, had endured imprisonment for many days. Weeping in grief, he sat silent and thought: "Alas for me. I have raised the child of an enemy. I thought him my heart's own child and loved him like my eyes. All my noble knowledge is wasted, for I have been fooled to death by affection. Wherever this is known, the three worlds will blame me. How can news reach the lotus feet of glorious Phra Harirak, so he may kill the enemy and repay this feud to my heart's content? O my breast, who can carry a message and report the news of my misery?" Lamenting and grieving, the asura's tears covered his face.

Then Asuraphat the yaksha, weeping over his grandfather as if life would end, thought: "Painasuriyawong has gained the realm of Lanka. He and I played together from the age when we were growing children. I will go up and ask him to forgive my grandfather and free him from the great prison." Having thought this, he came down from the victory palace and went straight to the shining audience hall.

He saw Painasuriyawong with Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha among ministers and officers, with a loud sound as they directed royal business. Boldly he walked straight in, brave and frank in heart. He sat down in front of the demon king, neither prostrating nor paying homage to the asura.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw Asuraphat come up and asked by command: "This bold little child, what lineage, name, and family has he? His face is that of a forest monkey. Why is his body that of an asura?"

Then Thotsaphin Sitthisak the yaksha heard the royal words, joined his hands, and answered the command: "This one is the son of Lady Benyakai, grandson of Phiphek the yaksha. His name is Prince Asuraphat. His father is a monkey named fierce Hanuman, the greatest soldier of bow-bearing Rama. His face is like his father's side, while his body and arms are like his mother."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the fashioned king heard, gnashed his teeth, and roared until the sound shook the hall: "Hah! You son of a forest monkey, why have you come up here? I could kill you now, and you would lose your life in an instant. But I fear the blame that I killed a child as small as a gnat's wing. Get your head down from here at once. I do not wish to look at the face of a base wretch."

Then bold-hearted Asuraphat heard Cakkrawat, lord of demons, as if the trident of Surakan had pierced his ear. He stared for a while without blinking, angered until his body shook. He snorted, bit and ground his teeth, and his hands itched to enter battle. Then he thought in fear of the danger that could reach his grandfather, his mother, and his grandmother, for the asura might not spare their lives. He choked down grief and anger; tears filled both eyes. Ashamed and furious, his breast tight, he returned to the victory palace.

When he arrived, he bowed at his grandmother's feet and his mother's feet, then wept. Sobbing and sighing, he told the story from beginning to end: "The disgrace is beyond thought; this pain will never leave my heart. I am born in a warrior's line. Even if I die, I will not regret my life. I take leave from my grandmother's feet and from my mother, lady and refuge, to go searching for my father and bring him to kill that one until his life is gone."

Then the two ladies, full of pity, heard Prince Asuraphat clearly lamenting his business. Each of them was deeply attached to him. They embraced him, kissed him, stroked his face, and received his spirit back. "You who share our life, do not rush. Think the matter through. Thao Cakkrawat will not stay here holding the kingdom. Soon he will move his army back to his own demon city. Go find your father, bring him the news, and report to the holy Avatara the suffering of your grandfather."

Then bold-hearted Asuraphat heard his grandmother and mother. The asura restrained himself and held down his heart, though vengeance stayed fixed in his mind and never left his thought. He guarded himself from danger and remained in the shining palace.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha stayed in the city of Lanka until fifteen nights had passed. He gave royal command to the demon ministers: "Tomorrow I will return to my city. Prepare the soldiers and forces."

Then Suphinsan, skilled in war, received the command of the mighty king, joined his hands, and hurried out.

He informed every division and inspected the prepared great fourfold army, setting them in ordered ranks according to the victorious marching array that had come.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha slept on his splendid couch in the shining great palace. When the last watch had passed, crystal roosters beat their wings and crowed; cuckoos hurried the sun; the moon sank behind the mountain edge. Bees and insects hummed, and golden light shone bright. At the sound of music, trumpets, and curved horns, he woke from his splendid bed.

He bathed, cleansed himself, and put on ornaments shining with pearls. He invited Prince Thotsaphin and went out to the radiant demon audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. The demon ministers and hosts bowed all around in crowds.

Then soft Lady Montho, beloved and lovely, learned that Cakkrawat the asura would move the army and return. She invited the senior ladies, matrons, and palace women great and small, went out from the bright palace, and came to attend the asura king.

When she arrived, she bowed at the lotus feet of Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, sat near the son who shared her life, and waited to hear the asura's words.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw Lady Montho come up and spoke gracious command: "Dwell here in ease, lady. I will take leave of you first. Thotsaphin, who rules the city, will care for the people. He is still young in royal business, and his years have only just begun to flourish. You are his mother and are quick in wisdom. Help sustain him so he does not stray from the ten royal virtues. Then his glory will increase, splendid and great, continuing in the solar Brahma-line. If any enemy king comes, send ministers to tell me; then I will raise an army to help fight, destroying them until life is gone." Having finished his charge, he moved gracefully from the shining seat, swept his hands, walked away, and mounted the radiant golden chariot.

He set the fourfold army in motion, with hundreds of thousands of mighty soldiers great and small, leaving great Lanka city and going to the city of Maliwan.

Then Asuraphat, bold in heart, when Cakkrawat had moved the army and left Lanka city, bowed his head in reverence and prostrated at the splendid feet of his mother. He asked: "My royal father, of what solar-line city is he king? What is his form and appearance? What name does he bear, mother?"

Then soft Lady Benyakai, beloved lady, embraced her son with longing and told the matter: "Your father, skilled and wise, is the grandson of Phraya Waiwongsa. He rules the city of Khitkhin, greatest of the solar line. He is the powerful son of Phra Phai. His name is Hanuman, the great soldier. His shining body has diamond hair, crystal fangs, garlands, and earrings. When he opens his mouth, moon and stars come out, blazing across the sky. He took leave of mighty Phra Chakkrit, went to practice vows, and became a yogi. He lives at Khao Kaeo Monthop. If you go, you will meet the rishi." Having told him, she gave him blessing: "May no danger or harm trouble you."

Then Asuraphat, brave in heart, heard and understood everything, including the signs of his father's form. He bowed his head and took leave from his grandmother's feet and from his beloved mother. Then he left the splendid palace, displayed his power, and flew away.

He floated swiftly like wind until he reached the hermitage at the great mountain. He came down from the air at speed and entered the hut grounds.

He bowed at the lotus feet and asked the great rishi: "Where does mighty Hanuman, strong in power, dwell in vows, holy one?"

Then Phra Thitsaphai, teacher strong in meditation, heard the asura prince and answered: "Fierce Hanuman is practicing meditation on the high mountain peak. He keeps precepts, meditates, and worships fire in the manner of a yogi."

Then the radiant grandson of Phra Phai heard the holy rishi's words, joined his hands, and flew away by his power.

He arrived and saw the holy ascetic practicing vows, chastity, and restraint of mind. A blazing fire-pit burned in front of the leaf hut. Not knowing this was his father, because the yaksha found the signs different, he bowed down and asked: "Where is the ascetic Hanuman?"

Then the rishi, Hanuman son of the Wind and great soldier, in meditation and fire worship, heard the sound of speech. He opened his eyes and saw the prince. His face was that of a splendid monkey, while body and arms were asura-form. He was deeply puzzled. But when he examined his bearing, bold and keen, he thought, "Whose child is this little one, so dear?" Thinking this, he questioned him: "Listen, asura prince. What lineage and city are yours? What is your name? Why have you come asking after glorious Hanuman?"

Then Asuraphat, bold in heart, heard the great teacher. He paid homage and answered at once: "I am named Asuraphat, grandson of Phiphek the yaksha. Lady Benyakai is my mother, dwelling in Lanka city. Hanuman is my father, soldier of the four-armed lord. I have come in pain and trouble, hoping to tell him what has happened."

Then the rishi, Hanuman son of the Wind, brave and wise, heard the words of his son and rejoiced as if he had gained heaven. He said: "Alas, beloved child. You do not recognize your father. I am victorious Hanuman, who brought you into being."

Then Asuraphat the yaksha heard and grew furious. He drew up his club, raised it easily, and stood firm. Grinding his teeth and stamping his foot until the mountain shook and thundered, his two eyes like final fire, the kumbhanda cried out: "Hey, hey, forest rishi! You are arrogant, speaking gross words. You lie in play without shame. I will kill you and end your life."

Then Hanuman, who was a rishi, saw that his son did not believe his words. The monkey thought: "He is not wasted as my son. He holds proud rank and bold courage. Because he is doubtful in spirit, he does not see that I am a monkey." Smiling, he spoke sweetly: "Listen, prince skilled in war. What did lovely Lady Benyakai, your mother, tell you? I am your father, wearing vows as a rishi; I would not speak falsely. Do not be angry and confused, saying I am not your father."

Then Asuraphat, bold in heart, heard the sweet words. The asura stepped back and paused to think: "The great sage would not speak to insult me; that would be wrong. He keeps chastity at all times." Thinking this, he told the matter: "My glorious father cannot be in human form. He is the great monkey lord, shining in every limb, with garlands and earrings, diamond hair, and radiant crystal fangs. If he opens his mouth and shows his power, sun, moon, and stars come out."

Then Hanuman the strong-vowed ascetic heard Asuraphat explain the matter. He clapped his hands, laughed aloud, and cried: "Watch now, beloved child, whether I match your mother's words or not." Having spoken, he displayed great power and kicked upward into the sky.

He became a monkey with four faces and eight hands, crystal fangs blazing bright, earrings and garlands splendid, diamond hair delicate and shining. Stars, moon, and the bright sun came out from the splendid monkey's mouth, lighting the earth below. Then he descended to the mountain.

Then Asuraphat, victorious and brave in heart, saw his powerful father and was filled with wonder. Joy and delight rose in him as if he had gained heaven's treasure. He bowed his head in homage, embraced his father's feet, and lamented: "May Your Majesty show mercy. This son has committed a grave fault. I angered you. Please forgive me and hold no enmity."

Then he told the story as it had happened, tears filling both eyes: "My holy grandfather believed Painasuriyawong to be his child and loved him beyond measure. But he and his guardian were false. They fled down to Maliwan, brought Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, and raised a hard army. He fought with my grandfather, captured him, and put him in prison. He suffers great misery, and I cannot visit him. Cakkrawat now resides in the victorious city, in the demon palace. He raised Painasuriyawong to rule Lanka, naming him Thao Thotsaphin, lord of demons, and then moved his soldiers back to his city."

Then fierce Hanuman the rishi heard, and anger swelled in him as if fire had touched his heart. He gnashed his teeth, ground his jaw, and roared: "Hah, that evil wretch could do this, not fearing me, whose power is great. I will kill him and destroy them together." Speaking, he embraced his beloved son, looked at his face, admired him, and received his spirit: "My eye's jewel, who shares my life, do not weep or grieve. Thao Cakkrawat and Thotsaphin will lose their bodies by the power of holy Phra Chakra, crown of the world." Having spoken, he took leave of his vows, left the ascetic rishi state, removed the yogi's equipment, and placed it in the forest hut.

When this was done, he displayed power until the ten directions shook and resounded. He took the royal son of high glory and flew by power to Khitkhin.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet and reported to Phraya Waiwongsa: "Now Prince Asuraphat, my son, has come to tell me that the city of Lanka has been attacked by a royal enemy. Thao Thotsakhiriwong, lord of demons, has been captured and imprisoned by that base wretch. If this reaches the lotus feet of the bow-bearing lord, I think there will be a great war. I have therefore taken leave of my forest vows and come to report the matter beneath your feet."

Then radiant Phraya Waiwongsa heard and grew angry as fire. He roared: "Hah! Painasuriyawong and his guardian are terribly bold. They will be destroyed in an instant, along with all of Lanka and Maliwan. Tomorrow take your son to report to glorious Phra Narai. I and Thao Mahachomphu will raise our armies and follow." Having spoken, he lifted Asuraphat, admired him with delight and love, and when the light of dawn had passed, they slept through the night.

Then the radiant arm-line lord was ruling the realm of Ayutthaya in happiness at all times. When the sun's light ended, the moon shone in the sky, haloed and free of clouds, with stars surrounding it like a rim. The wind carried the scent of flowers blooming in the royal gardens. He invited lovely Sita and went into the sleeping chamber.

He listened to song, strings, and clear music played for pleasure. In the last watch he fell asleep, and the lord of the earth dreamed. He saw clouds gather and block the sun, making the whole southern quarter dark. A god held up a sapphire jewel whose radiance shone like the sun. When the god came near, he bowed and lifted the jewel in offering. Then he drew out the lord's entrails so that they streamed from his body, circling and binding the whole universe down to the underworld below. Startled and alarmed, the lord woke from sleep.

He thought over the substance of the dream and found it deeply strange, uncertain in spirit, not knowing whether the cause and result were bad or good. When the sun glowed and golden light shone, he bathed, dressed in splendid ornaments, and went out to the audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella. Ministers and attendants came together and bowed everywhere. Then he explained the dream omen to the chief royal priests: "Tonight I had a strange dream." He told the whole story from beginning to end.

Then the honored chief astrologers received the command, considered it, and examined it by the manuals of prediction. Seeing clearly both harm and good, they joined their hands and reported to the bow-bearing lord: "The dream in which clouds gathered in the sky like masses of smoke, darkening the southern quarter and blocking all the sun's rays, means there will be battle and fighting, and a city at the border of the realm will be lost. The god offering the jewel means that one brave man will bring a royal son to present beneath Your Majesty's feet. The part in which he drew out Your Majesty's entrails and wound them around the whole universe means your great glory will become known through sky and underworld. Then you will gain subject cities beneath your feet, bringing gold, pearls, and jewels. But there must be battle; the wicked will be defeated by your power. The border that was lost will be recovered and will be happier than before. This is certain as I predict. You will know firm news within three days."

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai made manifest, heard the astrologers' prediction. The righteous king sat still and thought: "All the monkey kings who rule cities great and small are famed for mighty power. Who can violate them? But Phiphek the asura, who rules splendid Lanka city, has no power in force; he knows only the books of astrology. Therefore the enemy folk look down on him and grow arrogant." The more he thought, the more uneasy he became, and he would not attend to any royal business.

Then Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, when the stars and moon had slipped away and dawn brightened the sky, woke from his splendid bed, invited his royal son, bowed to mighty Sukhrip, and flew through the air to Ayutthaya.

When they arrived, they crawled in to attend the king. Each bowed his head and hair, prostrated with glad heart, and lay before the Avatara.

Then Phra Chakkrit, whose power surpassed the bright sun, saw the victorious son of Phra Phai bringing the prince and rejoiced. He gave command, asking Phraya Anuchit, splendid monkey: "You went to dwell as a yogi. What cause has brought you back? This small prince is wondrous. His face is that of a forest monkey, but his body is an asura's body. Whose lineage is he?"

Then Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, heard the command of the lord of the earth, bowed in homage, and answered the royal command: "When I took leave from your lotus feet and went to practice vows in a hidden place, no danger or harm troubled me, and I lived happily every night. This handsome-faced young prince is the beloved son of your servant at your splendid feet. Lady Benyakai is his mother, and his name is Prince Asuraphat. Now the city of Lanka has fallen into fighting and killing because the son of lovely Lady Montho, named Prince Painasuriyawong, and his guardian Waranisun secretly went to the royal city of Maliwan. They brought Thao Cakkrawat, wicked in heart, and led his soldiers to fight. Thao Thotsakhiriwong went out to meet him, lost the advantage, and was captured. He was bound and shut in prison, marked for death. Then Painasuriyawong was set to rule the realm of Lanka under the name Thotsaphin the kumbhanda, and the enemy army moved back to its city."

Then radiant Phra Krishnurak heard and grew angry as fire. He gave command: "This matter is true, just as the omen was. The astrologers' prediction is not wrong. Look at that child, small as a spider's thread, daring to enter final fire. That Cakkrawat, lord of yakshas, will also lose his life, for he came in violence and bound Phiphek in prison." Speaking, he praised Asuraphat for his loyal and brave heart, because he had reported the city's affairs according to the truth, so the enemy matter was known. Then fierce Hanuman, brave soldier, bowed his head and answered the royal command: "As for mighty Phraya Sukhrip, I already took the prince to tell him everything. As soon as he knew, he sent monkeys to muster troops from every city. When they are ready, they will quickly march after me to Dvaravati and attend beneath the dust of your lotus feet."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard the victorious son of Phra Phai and was greatly pleased. He gave royal command to the great chief minister: "You, wise one, go to Kaikek city. Find the two noble younger brothers Bharata and Shatrughna. I will send them to subdue the enemy at the royal city of Lanka."

Then the honored minister received the command, took leave in homage, mounted a horse, and hurried away.

When he reached the royal city of Kaikek, vast and full of delight, he dismounted from his excellent horse and went to the shining audience hall.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of the radiant brothers of Phra Hari's line and reported the matter according to the royal words that Phra Chakri had sent.

Then solar-line lord Bharata and his younger brother Shatrughna learned that Lanka city was troubled by dangerous enemy kings, and that the bow-bearing Avatara would make them commanders of the armies to destroy the kumbhandas. They rejoiced as if they had gained heaven's treasure. It was not wasted that the hosts of gods had gathered and invited Vaikuntha down to help holy Phra Harirak clear away the opposing yakshas. Even if they died, they would not regret life, for they would serve beneath the feet of the four-armed lord. Thinking this, they went gracefully from their nine-gem shining seats, with the host of beautiful women, and walked to follow him.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of their radiant grandfather and reported: "Lanka city has enemy thorns coming to fight it. Our elder brother commands that we become commanders of the army. We ask leave from the feet of the righteous king to destroy the kumbhandas in Lanka."

Then King Kaikek heard the two royal grandsons and was exceedingly delighted. "This time you two lords will keep your honor, and your fame will appear through all three worlds." Thinking this, he embraced his beloved grandsons, kissed their faces, and gave victory-blessing: "May the band of wicked enemies not withstand your power. May you have might to subdue all through the three worlds."

Then radiant Bharata and Shatrughna bowed their heads, received the blessing with joy, joined their hands in homage, and returned.

They lowered themselves onto the jeweled throne, bright as the sky, and gave royal command to the wise ministers: "Prepare the fourfold marching army, the hundreds of thousands of officers and brave soldiers. I will go to attend the Avatara, ruler of the world."

They mustered bold soldiers in a great fourfold army. Foot soldiers stood firm carrying firearms, all wearing red coats. Elephant troops wore brocade coats and swung hooks like turning wheels. Horse troops wore sandal-colored coats and carried golden lances in graceful display. Chariot troops wore rose-colored coats and held bows, testing the strings. They prepared shining jeweled chariots and lined them along the royal road.

Then noble Bharata and Shatrughna, when dawn had brightened the time, went to bathe in flowing water.

They bathed their bodies in streams from golden sprinklers, with fragrant water sweet from flowers. Their lower garments were splendid with crystal-vine patterns; their robes shone with golden leaf designs. Side panels and hanging ends flared. Three nine-gem chains crossed their chests, with direction-plates, carved breast ornaments, naga-pattern armlets, and bracelets. Each wore rings set in petal mounts, crowns based with radiant diamond gems, garlands, ear ornaments, and flowers at the side, delicate and glowing. Beautiful in body and bearing, gleaming with yellow radiance, each took up a bow and wore a priceless sword, and they walked gracefully one after the other.

When they reached the jeweled and golden landing, shining so that it touched the sky, the two mighty lords mounted the gleaming golden chariots.

O jeweled chariots, glittering with nine-gem light: hubs, rims, and spokes were pierced with carved designs; the raised front curved high like Vejayanta. The rear platform was lined with kneeling deities, with nagas, garudas, and kinnara figures between them. Crystal posts, panels, screens, and crestwork rose in five peaks and nine tiers, each descending in rank. Royal Sindhava horses were harnessed, their pace surpassing the rush of wind. Charioteers who knew their temper urged the chariots on, swinging golden whips. Peacock parasols and sunshades stood in ordered ranks before and behind. Streamer flags lined each troop. Trumpets, conches, pipes, gongs, and drums resounded. Chariot troops drove their cars, horse troops urged their horses noisily, commanders hurried the men in commotion, and the army pressed forward in haste.

Then the monkey lords great and small, all who guarded victorious cities, learned that Thao Cakkrawat, lord of demons, had brought brave troops to attack Lanka. Each one mustered his own soldiers and marched to the royal city of Khitkhin.
