Good Works Translation from Thai

This is the ninth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It gives Sahamaliwan's underworld fortifications and succession, Ronnaphak's war against heaven and naming as Intharachit, Nonthakan's curse into Torapha, Thoraphi's hidden birth, and Maiyarap's studies and heart-removal rite.

Translation

Sahamaliwan Fortifies the Underworld

[Slow]

Now the tale will speak of Sahamaliwan the yaksha. He learned that Latsatian the asura had reached the end of life, and that Thotsakan had come to rule the land and was oppressing gods in every place. "In time danger will arise and the heat will reach great underworld city. Our city is a great naga-city, and the border roads are not good. I will go set firm frontier posts so that enemies cannot come and harm us."

Having thought this, he ordered the demon ministers: "Hurry and prepare soldiers of left and right. I will go inspect the roads and establish posts to guard the city."

Then the demon ministers received the asura king's command, bowed farewell, and left the royal hall.

They levied warrior troops skilled in battle, choosing only bold and strong ones. The vanguard held guns, gnashing teeth as each one drew back the cock. One division had mask-like faces and rolling eyes, brandishing spears in uproar. Another held bows with trick arrows, their tusks curving out past the mouth nearly to the eyes. Another division all held long lances, white-toothed, rough-faced, and brave-hearted. They also prepared the jeweled chariot shining like the sky and waited for the asura king to depart.

Then Thao Sahamaliwan the yaksha came down from the jeweled throne and entered the bathing pool.

He bathed and refreshed his body, then put on sweet divine perfume. His trousers were set with divine jewels; his cloth bore vine-and-Garuda patterns. He put on hanging sash and side panels, a brocaded upper garment scattered with jewels, directional plates, golden breast ornaments, and necklaces of pearl-strands. Golden armlets changed into dragon forms; diamond rings flashed with rainbow light. He wore a jeweled crown with flower garlands, hanging earrings, and ear ornaments. His left hand held a mace; his right grasped a sword. Beautiful in form like Vessuwan, he walked to mount the victorious chariot.

The royal chariot had wheels set with emeralds. Its yoke curved softly and beautifully; its throne was layered with ornamental peaks. Divine kneeling figures were set in rows, and Garudas gripping nagas hung with heads thrown back. Its jeweled palace roof sparkled with diamonds, lovely like the sun's own chariot. It was harnessed to two thousand proud lions, spirited like lion-kings. The charioteer held a spear and drove swiftly as wind. Umbrellas, screens, and streamer-banners were set about it, their tips snapping. The crowded procession moved in dense ranks; gongs and drums thundered. The chariot wheels roared through the forest; the warriors shouted; the earth trembled in deep layers as they went out from the city.

They reached the sandy rise by the sea, at the furthest border of the yaksha realm, the first road by which one would go up to the earth. The asura halted the great army.

He created a golden-lotus pond, with one strange enormous lotus flower. The road led down through its stalk. He set a stone gate there, with enclosing walls, forts, and camps, guarded by more than ten million kumbhandas. Beyond that he placed a royal elephant, huge, brave, and in rut, roaming and guarding the way, waiting to destroy enemies. Beyond that he placed clashing mountains whose sparks shone like black fire. Beyond that he set a swarm of great mosquitoes, each as large as a hen and fierce in heart. When every arrangement was complete, the demon king returned to his city.

When he arrived, he gave command to the four great ministers: "The gates and ramparts of the city are places where people come and go in confusion. If an enemy comes disguised to do harm, it will be hard to divide them and capture them. Make weighing-scale machines, so that every person, going and coming, is weighed." Having commanded this, he stepped gracefully from the royal chariot's throne and went up to the great victorious palace.

Then the four great ministers received the command of the lord who sustains the three worlds and went to do as ordered.

Then brave-hearted Thao Sahamaliwan, after enjoying underworld royal fortune for a very long time, reckoned at ten million years, grew old and gravely ill. He called Maha Yom Yak, his son dear as life, and gave command: "Now your father is about to perish. You will inherit this wealth hereafter. Do not associate with Thotsakan the asura, whose heart is sinful, crude, and common. He will bring harm to Brahma's line, glorious and powerful though it is." Having instructed him, the demon king's breath failed and his life ended.

Then Maha Yom Yak inherited the heavenly city in place of his exalted father. He bore the name Thao Sakkaya Wong, Maha Yom Yak, skilled in war. He had a beautiful queen, graceful and pleasing in form, named Chanda Prapha. She was deeply beloved of the kumbhanda. He had a daughter of excellent beauty named Pirakuan Devi, and a royal son named Maiyarap the yaksha. Their father and mother allowed no stain to touch them. The king enjoyed royal fortune; the people were happy and delighted in the underworld city.

Ronnaphak Makes War on Indra

Then Thotsakan the yaksha, at night in his sleeping chamber, grew swollen in spirit. "I possess noble power and sacred might. Enemies cannot resist me. All three worlds and the earth fear my majesty and fall flat before it. Only Kosiy of the three eyes does not fear the power of the radiant Brahma line, because he has Phra Suli's jeweled discus and acts arrogantly in pride. My son Ronnaphak is fierce in power and has Vedas and mighty arrows. I will have him raise the yaksha army and attack heaven, so that it comes under my hand by my son's force. This will be fame and honor in the world until the end of the age."

When the bright sun shone with golden light, he bathed, adorned himself, and came to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol. The asuras and kumbhandas gathered and bowed prostrate before him, like stars surrounding the moon in the sky. He gave royal command to his chief son: "Look, beloved one, jewel of your father's eye. All the three worlds and the whole earth fear your father's power. But Thao Trinetra insults us, imagining himself skilled in war. Raise your troops and go up to attack him."

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, heard the royal command and rejoiced. He raised joined hands and answered: "To go and subdue Kosiy is exactly as your child hoped to serve." Having spoken, he bowed farewell and went to the bright palace.

When he arrived, he gave command to his great ministers: "Levy the great army. I will go attack Makhawan."

Then the brave great ministers bowed their heads to receive the command, and the demon lords came out at once.

They appointed Rithikan and Kiakkai Chotiwan the yaksha to the vanguard. Ruthakan the asura held the right wing; Tri Mekhmala the left. Nanthayak was the adjutant; Romchak the rear guard. Phatkan the asura held the supply guard; Atsada the kumbhanda commanded the reserve. All led fierce troops, brandishing weapons like turning discuses. They harnessed the great rutting royal elephant and prepared to receive the asura king.

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, when dawn brightened the earth, came to the place of bathing.

He had the thousand streams opened so that fine spray fell like rain. He bathed in fragrant water mixed with golden flowers. His trousers were woven with Vasuki forms; his cloth was green with gold. His side panels were adorned with swan designs, and his hanging sash had curling vine patterns. He wore crystal armor and three war-necklaces. Breastplate, directional plates, and rubies flashed; golden dragon armlets clasped him. Yellow diamond rings shone on all ten fingers. He wore a great crown with flowers, radiant earrings, and ear ornaments. His right hand held bow and arrow. Like Phra Khantha Kumar of destructive power, he walked to mount the great elephant.

The royal elephant, chief of all cakra-elephants, was huge and high, brave and swift in tusk-force. Its ears and tail swung like machines. Fierce and bold in attack, its call rumbled like rain. Its trumpeting roared in uproar; it had fought and won many times. Its trunk seized, its tusks thrust and hooked, and it did not retreat one step from enemies. Its power seemed able to pluck down moon and stars. It was bold, proud, and spirited, adorned with battle gear fit for a royal elephant. The warrior shouts rang out as the yaksha troops hurried and flew forward.

When they reached the summit of Mount Yugandhara, he halted the warrior host and waited to see what Thao Makhawan would devise in war.

Then the gods, great and small, saw Ronnaphak bringing his army up into the heavenly realm. Each was terrified, body shaking as if life would end. They left their jeweled palaces and went to attend Indra, lord of the gods.

When they arrived, they bowed at the radiant divine king's feet and said: "Ronnaphak the asura has brought a kumbhanda army and set it in the great royal heaven. It seems he will fight for the heaven of the Thirty-Three. Lord and crown of the gods, righteous king, quickly consider what to do."

Then brave-hearted Thao Hatsanai heard and spoke: "Hey, those arrogant fools. Look, divine youth Matali, fierce and brave in power. Hurry and arrange the divine army. We will march to subdue the asura."

Then radiant Phra Matali received the command of Thao Suchambadi, offered joined hands, and came out.

He appointed radiant Phra Kan to lead the divine troops as vanguard. Phra Phirun held the body of the army; Suyam the right wing; Phra Phai the powerful left wing. Thao Atsakan held the supply guard; Vishnukam was adjutant. Isan carried the divine victory banner. Each divine division was levied at two crores. The roar was as if the ground of Mount Meru trembled. The bright jeweled Vejayanta chariot was prepared, awaiting the march of Hatsanai.

Then the lord of the Thirty-Three, as the auspicious time drew near, came to the place of bathing.

He had a thousand golden pipes opened, divine water spraying like fine rain. He bathed in sweet fragrant water mixed with golden blossoms. He wore three-tiered curved trousers set with alternating rubies and jewels; cloth with a Garuda border; hanging sash and side panels. He put on a divine diamond-gold cuirass, an upper garment with brocaded vine-work, directional plates and breast ornaments set with red gems, armlets with carved patterns, golden naga bracelets, and diamond rings on every finger. He wore a divine jeweled crown with flowers, bright ear ornaments, and shining earrings. He grasped the victorious Moli discus, its radiance like lightning, came down from the shining divine throne, and mounted the jeweled chariot.

Then the brave divine horses, a thousand divine youths transformed as steeds and harnessed to great Vejayanta, showed an ill-omened sign. Testing the movement of battle, they reared and all cried defeat at the same time, just as the army was about to move.

The palace-chariot Vejayanta, divine and high, had shining jeweled wheels and a beautifully curved yoke. Its throne was tiered in gem patterns, with a jeweled palace roof. A thousand divine youths in horse form, all fierce in power, drew it. Phra Matali rode and drove the steeds, and the sound thundered through the worlds. Seven divine banners with curved tips were planted; flywhisks and regalia stood in alternating rows. Gongs, drums, trumpets, and conches sounded. Isan stood before the army and waved the banner as the sign to move. The shout thundered through heaven and earth.

When the army reached the halfway point in the middle of Mount Meru, Indra halted the divine steeds and held firm to watch the asura's move.

Then Ronnaphak, yaksha of the solar line, saw Kosiy bringing the army down and drove his elephant upward.

He shouted: "Hey, hey, Makhawan. What is this plan of yours? Why act proudly and not go attend the yaksha king, crown of Lanka city, whose power has subdued all three worlds? His Majesty burns with anger and has sent me, his beloved son, to destroy and kill you by my fierce battle-power. If you love yourself and fear death, go attend at the lord of earth's feet."

Then Thao Hatsanai Kosiy heard and answered: "Hey, foolish-hearted asura. I am lord in the heavenly level. Do not speak and boast of bravery. Your father is common and performs only ill-omened deeds. I will not associate at equal rank with that ugly, unwholesome wretch. Do not boast of battle-power. You, facing my might, are like a jackal teasing a bold lion. You are fit only to die now by the discus-weapon."

Then the son of Thao Thotsakan the yaksha heard and grew angry like fire. The asura gnashed his teeth. "Hey, look at this, Indra, arrogant, crude, and deluded. Good. Now you will see. I will end your life." As he spoke, he gave royal command: "Hey, demon ministers, great and small, raise the army and attack the gods."

Then mighty Rithikan the yaksha, vanguard of the asuras, drove his warriors into the assault.

Then the asura-yaksha hosts each displayed power and attacked the army of the lord of gods.

They hurled weapons in tumult, shouting in thunder. The kumbhandas pressed forward, charged, pierced, and cut without pause.

Then Phra Kan, skilled in war, drove the gods and vidyadharas into battle, striking and attacking the asuras.

They fought, shot, thrust, stabbed, and cut. The kumbhandas broke and scattered in flight. The gods pressed after them in close combat, striking up to the demon lord's elephant.

Then Ronnaphak, fierce and brave, burned with anger like black fire and drove the elephant rushing into battle.

Its trunk seized, its tusks stabbed, its feet struck, and its tail lashed as it pierced forward. The gods broke and recoiled before the asura's power.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai saw the yaksha driving the elephant into battle, and hurled the jeweled discus by his power.

It became corrosive fire surrounding the elephant. The demon troops burned and could not endure it; they ran apart in every direction, and the roaring sound was tumultuous.

Then the son of Thao Thotsakan the yaksha, struck by the flame and burning in body, was startled. He drew the Vishnupanam arrow, whose power made the earth shake, laid it on the string, and shot it by the demon lord's power.

Earth and sky trembled. Sound resounded everywhere. The ten directions darkened, and rain poured down. The fierce flames were extinguished, and the asura rejoiced deeply. He drove the royal elephant forward to chase, kill, and attack.

Then radiant Thao Makhawan saw that the yaksha's arrow had become water and extinguished the fire. The asura now displayed bold power and drove the great elephant forward. Indra grasped the trident, swung it, and hurled it by the force of his power.

The sound thundered through the sky, and darkness covered every direction. It became a mighty diamond net surrounding the elephant and its warrior host.

Then brave-hearted Ronnaphak drew the Brahma-given Naga-snare arrow, lifted it to his head in reverence, and shot it.

It cracked like thunder. The diamond net was cut away without remainder. Then the arrow changed into powerful nagas, surrounding and chasing, breathing poison in uproar.

Then radiant Thao Hatsanai saw the asura's arrow become nagas and come attacking before the chariot. All the divine warriors were terrified and scattered. He ordered renowned Matali to drive the chariot upward into the clouds.

Then Rithikan, who was the vanguard, leaped by his power and seized the tail of the chariot, dragging it back.

Matali drove and leaped away, while the demon lord held firm and would not release. One side fled and one side pulled in confusion across the sky.

Then Thao Makhawan, skilled in war, saw the yaksha following and attacking, and did not fight the asura. Fear made his face pale and body tremble as if life would end. Before he could grasp the discus, he fled to great adorned Vejayanta.

Then Rithikan, bold in heart, saw exalted Makhawan flee from the Vejayanta palace. He picked up the jeweled Moli discus of the supreme lord of Kailasa. Without following to fight further, the kumbhanda returned down.

When he arrived, he raised joined hands and offered the discus to Ronnaphak the yaksha, saying: "I gained the object of Amarin as a reward of my hand."

Then Ronnaphak of the solar line, bearer of the bow, had won victory and gained the fierce discus. He ordered the warrior host dismissed. Turning the royal elephant from the place of splendid Mount Meru, he flew swiftly by power back to Lanka city.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of his royal father and said: "Your child marched up to heaven and fought the power of Hatsanai. I attacked until the divine king could not endure my strength. I drove his army into flight and the asuras chased and attacked. Your child seized the bright jeweled discus and brings it to offer to my exalted father as the token of battle."

Then the ten-headed yaksha of the solar line received the jeweled Moli discus and rejoiced as if he had gained the heavens. He embraced his mighty and brave son. "You are worthy to be crown of the asuras and continue the solar line in the yaksha city. Son, bear the name Intharachit, so that your name and power are famous through the three worlds, according to the sign of your victory over the gods."

Then Intharachit of the splendid solar line bowed his head with joined hands. The kumbhanda received his father's blessing. His face shone like the moon, filled with joy. He raised joined hands silently, bowed farewell, and went to the shining great palace.

Nonthakan Is Cursed as Torapha

Now the tale will speak of beautiful Nang Mali. She served Phra Suli's lotus feet on Mount Kailasa. Lovely in form and radiance, the chief woman regularly gathered flowers to worship the Veda. When the time came, she went out.

She wandered, gathering flowers: jasmine-like blossoms, heavenly milk-flowers, roses, kalong, jasmine vines, phikan, ketkaeo, blooming hibiscus, pradu, lamduan, yomdoi, wind-sweet fragrance, nang yaem, saiyut, phutthan, angkap lifting stalks, ylang-ylang, krabaek clusters, lotus, double jasmine, fragrant champa, maluli, malila, phikun, kannika, and saraphi. She moved winding through the garden, singing in play, her voice soft and drawn out. She moved gracefully like a kinnari while plucking flowers to adorn her breast. Then she turned to sweet song, her voice like the karavek bird and swan. In the cool shade and pleasant breeze, she sat and strung garlands.

Then brave-hearted Nonthakan the asura, servant of Phra Swayambhu, guarded the inner wall gate. He had been alone and without a mate for ten thousand years, never knowing the taste of a woman. He saw Nang Mali often go out to gather flowers. Her graceful, lovely body bound his heart in desire. He sat smiling by the gate, and when she walked out, he followed her.

When they reached the garden, Nonthakan hid behind a great banyan. He saw her sitting and stringing garlands, beautiful as the moon at night. The more he looked, the more passion overwhelmed him, burning and pressing him like scorching fire. The asura plucked flowers and threw them at the lovely goddess.

Then heavenly Nang Mali was startled as if someone had struck her, and the maiden cried out at once. She looked around the garden and saw Nonthakan the yaksha. Anger and resentment multiplied; she picked up the flowers and hurried away.

When she arrived, she bowed at the feet of Phra Isuaro, royal lord and refuge. Speaking in deep grief, with tears brimming, she said that Nonthakan was arrogant and did not fear the lotus feet. She reported everything from beginning to end and offered the flowers as proof.

Then Phra Isuan, supreme creator, heard and grew angry like the fire at the end of an age. "Hey, arrogant kumbhanda. Chitubot, hurry down to that wretch Nonthakan the yaksha. Bring him up, so I may ask the matter clearly."

Then Chitubot, wise and brave, bowed his head to receive the lord of wisdom's command and hurried to the gate at once.

When he arrived, he explained: "Radiant Phra Isares has sent me to find the asura and bring him to attend at the dust of his feet."

Then Nonthakan the yaksha learned the divine command. Alarmed, he came with the god.

When he arrived, he crawled up to attend the lord of the three worlds, bowed his head and hands, and waited to hear the word of the lord.

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu looked and saw the asura, and gave divine command: "Look, asura Nonthakan. What were you thinking, that you acted proudly and threw flowers at heavenly Mali? She is one of my close attendants. You did not think to know your yaksha station. Your crudeness is severe beyond measure. Do you not fear punishment?"

Then Nonthakan the yaksha heard the divine royal command like lightning striking the kumbhanda. He bowed his head and said to the lord of earth: "I dared to tease the heavenly woman. My fault is worthy of losing life. Righteous lord, please show mercy."

Then radiant Phra Swayambhu heard and grew angry like fire that would burn the three worlds. By effective speech he cursed him: "You have done wrong and bear a great fault. Do not delay. Go down and become a buffalo in the forest, named fierce Torapha, to satisfy your delusion. When you have a mighty son named Thoraphi, skilled and victorious, he will destroy your life. Then you will pass beyond animal birth, end suffering, and return as a gate officer at Mount Kailasa."

Then Nonthakan the yaksha heard and burned in spirit, as if life itself would end. Through grief and fear at his own fault, he could not think how to beg pardon. He took leave of the lord who sustains the three worlds and left Mount Kailasa.

[Oh Rai]

As he walked, he was full of grief, tears bathing the yaksha's face. "Alas, I am no good. In vain I was born male. Without the joy of love, I am lower than all men. I loved a woman and hoped for nearness without thinking of myself. Instead I have received disgrace. From now on I will endure suffering, losing happiness and leaving my joyful place to wander and sleep in forest thickets." The demon lord lamented and wept.

Then resolve rose in him and he gnashed his teeth. "Karma has caught me and cannot be escaped. Since it has reached me, why be afraid?" Thinking this, he went straight to the forest.

When he reached the Himmaphan forest, he changed form into a buffalo named Phaya Torapha, skilled in mighty power. He was huge, high, fat, and bold, crude, fierce, and brave. His body was pale white, his heart foolish, jealous, and unrighteous. His retinue was all female buffaloes, five thousand roaming in the forest. If any one became pregnant, Torapha watched carefully. If he saw a female buffalo give birth to a male calf, he felt no pity, but regarded it as an enemy and killed it away from the herd. Because of this suspicion and loathing, he jealously guarded the herd. No male buffalo was mixed among them; he alone wandered through the wild.

Then Nang Nila, a buffalo cow who had mated with Torapha, became pregnant. She thought about herself in fear of the buffalo king. "If I give birth to a son, he will surely die. Better that I flee from the herd and give birth hidden in a great cave." Having thought this, she slipped away secretly and entered the mountain slope.

She reached a divine jeweled cave just as the clear sun shone. The auspicious time and day had arrived, and she gave birth to a male calf, black in color, bold and brave, with great joints and force. She licked her beloved calf in delight, let him drink milk, and comforted him: "My beloved child, your mother cannot stay long. If your father learns of you, we will both perish in the blink of an eye." She told him everything, especially how Torapha killed the lives of sons. "Guard your body carefully. Live as an orphan without your mother." As she spoke, tears streamed down. "I entrust you to the gods of every mountain." Then she left the shining cave and went back to roam with the herd.

Then the gods dwelling in the great cave heard the buffalo cow and felt deep pity. They invited one another to guard his two horns and four feet day and night, and named him Thoraphi, skilled in victory.

Maiyarap Learns the Heart Rite

Then Thao Yom Yak, who ruled that underworld realm with great and excellent honor, possessed beautiful consorts, countless brave ministers and troops, and happy subjects. No enemy or danger troubled him. He ruled royal fortune for a long time until the yaksha king's age reached fifty thousand years and his life drew near its end. He said to his chief wife: "When my father entrusted power to me, he told me not to associate with Thotsakan, who is crude, unrighteous, and ugly. Tell our children and descendants after us not to associate at equal rank with him." Having given this instruction, the grandson of the four-faced lord ended his life.

Then mighty Maiyarap the yaksha, when his royal father died, felt lonely and grieved. He reflected on the burden of ruling the realm: "If war arises and enemies come to fight, I have no mighty power with which to attack." He decided to seek the wise Phra Sumet, who lived in the Himmaphan mountains. Having thought this, he adorned himself and went to attend his mother.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and said to his royal mother: "Your beloved child asks leave to go study knowledge with the sage."

Then beautiful Nang Chanda Prapha heard her royal son and rejoiced. The goddess gave blessing: "May you go study knowledge, become brave and skilled in war like your exalted father, and prosper in lasting good fortune."

Then King Maiyarap the yaksha raised joined hands to receive his mother's blessing and pierced upward through the earth.

When he arrived, he bowed and paid respect to Phra Sumet, the great teacher, saying: "I have set my will to learn while dwelling beneath your feet."

Then Phra Sumet, vow-strong ascetic, heard Maiyarap and rejoiced. He taught Vedas, formulas, great mantras, the binding of minds, sleep-spells, army-subduing magic, all medicines, tube-blowing invisibility, rites, devices, stratagems, endurance, and bodily strength.

Then King Maiyarap the yaksha labored and studied knowledge with the great teacher. He memorized every device and stratagem for use, every subtle detail. He tested them fully and became skilled in the sage's knowledge.

Then Phra Sumet, great rishi, saw that Maiyarap the asura was wise, quick, and nimble. He stroked his back and spoke fair words: "Mighty one, whose power shakes the earth, I will teach you the Veda for removing the heart, so that no one can kill you."

Then King Maiyarap the yaksha heard the great holy one say that he would establish the skull rite to strengthen his power. He bowed and answered: "As for performing the removal of the heart, I am glad beyond thought. Holy one, please show mercy."

Then the great rishi led Maiyarap the asura out from the leaf-hall.

They reached a great rang tree, whose leafy crown and branches gave dense shade, hiding the sun's light. The scent of flowers covered the air. Beneath the tree was a smooth place of soft sand near the foot of the mountain slope. There he heaped up a ritual skull and worshipped the fire according to the sacred Vedic rite.

Then brave-hearted King Maiyarap bathed in the stream, and the demon lord wrapped his hair like a yogin. He anointed his face with powder, held a bright jeweled rosary, bowed at the great sage's feet, and sat down in meditation.

Then Phra Sumet, strong in wisdom and meditation, consecrated water and sprinkled the asura, recited mantra, and blew over him. When the full fifteen-day term was complete, the sky thundered and shook. Darkness covered the whole forest, struck by the sage's sacred Veda.

Then King Maiyarap the yaksha closed his eyes and restrained his body, knowing nothing of events. When the heart was about to leave the body by the force of the mighty Veda, it became a golden bee and flew from the mouth of the powerful demon lord. It circled clockwise three times, then went straight to taste the pollen in the rang flower, whose flavor spread abroad, and flew back to the asura.

Then the great rishi saw the golden bee go to taste the flower and return, flying before the demon lord. The holy one rejoiced deeply. He reached out his hand, took the bee, and gave it to the asura king. Then he spoke fair words: "Look, Maiyarap the yaksha. Take your life-heart and place it at Mount Trikut. From now on the asura body will be greatly enduring and firm. Even if enemies plot against you and kill you with corrosive fire, your life will not end."

Then mighty Maiyarap received the heart from the teacher's hand and rejoiced as if he had gained the sixteenth heaven. He said: "Your kindness is vast beyond measure. May Your Majesty remain and deepen your vows forever in the hermitage. I ask leave at your lotus feet to go down to the underworld first." Having spoken, he displayed destructive power and pierced downward through the earth.

He reached Mount Trikut beneath the foot of great Meru. There the demon king placed his heart between the mountain peaks.
