This is the ninetieth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thao Chomphu sending Nilaphat with the monkey armies, Phra Rama commissioning Bharata and Shatrughna to recover Lanka, the march from Ayutthaya through the old exile and war-route, Nilaphat making his body into the sea-road, the army camping at Emerald Mountain, and Si Chomphuphan entering Lanka as envoy to Thotsaphin.

Bharata and Shatrughna March on Lanka

Now the tale turns to Thao Chomphu, splendid monkey king. When he learned that royal enemies had come to trouble Lanka city, he ordered Nilaphat, who shared his heart: "You of great power and brave courage, in the war against Thotsakan, lord of demons, you did not serve the Garuda-borne lord. This time command the twenty seas of monkey forces. Go wage war for the crowned lord of the world. Do not cause displeasure beneath his lotus feet. Set your heart on loyal service, destroy the asura host, and make your glory known on earth."

Then the victorious son of Phra Kal bowed his head, gladly received the command, joined his hands, took leave, and went out from the audience hall.

He mustered all twenty seas of troops, every one fierce in power and firm, veterans of violent fighting who had killed kumbhandas in Lanka. They had every weapon needed for an army, ready on left and right. They left Chomphu city and marched along the forest road.

Near splendid Khitkhin city they met the armies of the monkey kings. Each force halted its soldiers outside the city.

Then the son of the bright Sun, skilled in war, saw the monkey kings bringing all their troops and rejoiced. He mustered fifty seas of forces, all so fierce in power that the earth shook, arranged fully in victorious army order, and marched to Ayutthaya city.

They met the armies of Bharata and Shatrughna, the two noble younger brothers. Together they went to offer homage to the powerful younger brothers of Phra Chakri.

Then noble Bharata and Shatrughna saw all the monkey kings arrive from every city. They spoke sweet greeting with delighted hearts. When this was done, they went together to attend the powerful four-armed lord.

All bowed their heads in homage at the feet of the radiant lord of the three worlds and waited for the king's command in the shining audience hall.

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai made manifest, saw his two beautiful younger brothers and all the kings come in together from every city. The king was filled with joy and spoke sweetly: "Listen, graceful younger brothers. We four brothers were invited by rishis and gods in the three worlds to descend as avatars and destroy the yaksha, that base ten-faced one. I and my younger brother Phra Lak killed him and ended his life. Now Cakkrawat, lord of demons, has raised an arrogant demon army to attack. He has seized Phiphek and bound him firmly in prison, and has set the ten-faced one's son over Lanka city, without fearing me, who have power. You brothers must march out, capture that yaksha Thotsaphin, cut off his head, and set it on a stake in Lanka so no one imitates him. Then raise the armies and go fight deluded Cakkrawat at the city of Maliwan. Kill him and all the wicked. This will be honor and glory for my brothers through the end of the age, like diamond-iron inscription on the universe, long enduring and never erased."

Then the brothers, of noble disposition, heard the royal command of the lord of the earth and rejoiced as if they had gained the sixteen treasures. Each bowed his head in reverence and reported at the lotus feet: "Since the glorious arm-line lord has commanded that your younger brothers go to war and clear away the yaksha line, we ask to serve beneath your feet until life leaves us."

Then brave-hearted Nilaphat, great in power, bowed his head and reported with wisdom: "May the sky-ruling lord show mercy. Formerly I did wrong, and that fault still rests above my head. I did not destroy and end lives for you; your kindness is beyond measure. This time, going to subdue the demons, I ask to serve as vanguard for the holy younger brothers, marching in to kill the dangerous host. Even if battle is heavy anywhere, I will break through boldly and not think of life. I ask to repay the lord of the earth's grace and not cause displeasure beneath the lotus feet."

Then wise Phra Chakri heard the words of the son of Phra Kal. The sky-ruling lord rejoiced and gave royal command to the four astrologers: "Find the hour to move the army, so there will be victory over the kumbhanda host."

Then the diligent astrologer lords and mighty Chomphuwaraj bowed and took up their slate boards. They multiplied, divided, and checked every manual, finding a bold attacking hour, with the day of departure auspicious and full of great victory. Seeing it in agreement, they bowed and reported to the vast solar-line king: "Tomorrow, Tuesday, the ninth night of the waxing moon, is the hour of Maghavan the god. Saturn moves from Pisces; all ominous quarters and death signs are clear. At dawn, when sunlight rises, thirty-two layers are most excellent. It is fit to send out the warriors to subdue the opposing wicked. There will be victory over the asura yakshas, and your fame will appear through the whole world."

Then the solar-line lord, Phra Narai king, heard Chomphuwaraj and the astrologers set the army's departure. He gave command to the son of the Sun, skilled in war, to Hanuman, to mighty Ongkhot, and to all eighteen trusted monkeys: "War against kumbhandas cannot be taken lightly or despised. Bharata and Shatrughna, great in power, have never fought for victory against enemies. Battle has deep and many-fold stratagems, and yakshas have subtle tactics. Consult together carefully, so the asuras do not gain advantage. Go quickly and arrange the army, with all left and right wings, in time for the auspicious departure at dawn."

Then mighty Sukhrip and all the monkey kings bowed in homage and went out.

They mustered the monkey host as a great marching army. The victorious son of Phra Kal was made vanguard to engage the foe. In the second rank, the splendid monkey Surakan commanded a hard troop of soldiers. Strong Si Chomphuphan served as the flanking guard to meet the enemy. Behind came the younger brothers' chariot, as supreme command under royal authority. The powerful grandson of Indra served as adjutant, directing the work of battle. The reserve for cutting through was Mahatwikan, splendid monkey. Wisanta Rawi the monkey held the rear guard. Left wing, right wing, fast-running troops, and forest scouts skilled in war all held complete weapons, packed in layered masses.

Then Bharata and Shatrughna, fashioned in splendor, when dawn and sunlight arrived, went together to the bathing place.

The two kings bathed their bodies in ease; golden lotus pipes scattered spray like rain. They used fragrant scented water blended with golden flower pollen. They wore glass-patterned lower cloths with raised hems, lifted brocade with leaf designs, splendid side-panels and hanging ends, and golden upper robes with floating round ornaments. Emerald direction-plates and breast ornaments shone, with rainbow-crystal chains like fireflies, bracelets and armlets set with gems, and diamond rings glittering to the eye. They wore great crowns with flowers at the side and ear ornaments shining up to the sky. Each took his mighty sword and came to his mothers' palace.

When they arrived, they bowed in homage to the three royal mothers and reported: "Holy Phra Chakri, crown of the three worlds, has commanded your sons to raise the forces, the great and small monkey soldiers, to destroy the unrighteous ones who have brought calamity to Lanka. When that is done, he commands us to go on and clear away the life of Cakkrawat the yaksha at the city of Maliwan. We ask leave from your lotus feet."

Then the three compassionate royal mothers heard their sons report and rejoiced. They spoke to the two beloved sons, the eyes of their mothers: "Since you will raise the army to subdue the wicked asuras, set your hearts to remember the grace of your great elder brother. In war, consult the officers and use wisdom to shape the fitting course." Speaking, they gave victory-blessing: "Go in happiness and ease. May you defeat the enemy demons through the whole universe, so none can withstand you."

Then Bharata and Shatrughna, skilled in war, each bowed his head and received the blessing of the three mothers with joy. Then they bowed in homage, touched the royal feet to their heads, took leave of their mothers, and went to attend Phra Chakra.

They bowed their heads at the lotus feet of Phra Harirak, the king, amid the hundreds of thousands of soldiers, and waited for the sky-ruling lord's command.

Then the lord of the three worlds, who effaces every realm, saw his two victorious younger brothers come to take leave at his lotus feet and rejoiced. He gave the victorious Brahma-weapon arrow, which subdues all beneath sky and zodiac, and the armor of Angata the sage to wise Bharata. Phra Lak gave the moon-and-sun arrow, powerful to clear away yakshas, and Indra's crystal armor to graceful Shatrughna. Each gave blessing: "You whose power is famed through all three worlds, may you have victory over the asura yakshas, and may the enemies be defeated through all the earth."

Then radiant Bharata and Shatrughna received blessing, arrows, and armor with joy. Each joined his hands and took leave.

When this was done, they moved gracefully from the shining palace, swept their hands, walked in order, and mounted the victorious chariot.

O royal war-chariot: its crystal jeweled wheels and spokes were splendid; its body, yoke, and curved axle were delicately shaped in descending tiers, with images encircling the floating throne. A pavilion with petal mounts and plated posts stood there, flanked by crystal Brahma arrows and hanging leaf-scrolls. The throne shimmered with gem colors, and the curving crestwork and screens were lovely. Four noble Sindhava horses were harnessed, their white bodies pure as conch. Shatrughna, the younger brother who shared life, sat in front, bowing with joined hands. The charioteer drove swiftly like a rushing wind, the horses leaping, proud and high-spirited like lions. High insignia, golden fans, yak-tail whisks, curved trumpets, foreign trumpets, and drums sounded together. Chaiyam waved the flag leading the troops; the host shouted, loud and vast. The many armies moved, every troop leaving Ayutthaya.

They entered the mountain forest. The path was hard and wild. They crossed the Satong River and reached the mountain of Sattakut.

[Forest Viewing]

The lords watched the four-footed beasts: rhinoceroses, lions, and elephant-lions; deer startled by lordly tigers; porcupines and bears moving in pairs. Royal lions, man-lions, wild bulls, kirin, khola, and kasorn beasts roamed. Lone buffalo wandered through wooded uplands. Civets darted through narrow tracks. Deer and fawns spread everywhere to graze; antelopes moved beside their mates. Chamari beasts walked browsing. Pointing to his younger brother, the lord watched with pleasure: there were tigers, lions, and elephants wandering to eat bamboo at the forest edge; to beasts leapt and played along the mountains; serows sprang over the cliffs; female gibbons swung from branches and cried with echoing plaintive voices. Watching as they went, they hurried the army along the road.

They traveled through fields and mountain hollows, crossing streams, torrents, and peaks, stopping and lodging at halting places for many days and nights. They reached the Godavari sea-region, a snowy forest land. Then the king ordered the son of the Sun to halt the armies.

Then radiant Phraya Waiwongsa bowed his head, offered joined hands, and the monkey lord reported to the two kings: "This is the hermitage of your great elder brother. Here he practiced vows and conduct, with a fire-pit for fire worship. The ten-headed demon lord formed his gross and wicked plan and stole the young queen from the forest hut."

Then radiant Bharata and Shatrughna, learning that it was Phra Chakri's hermitage, bowed their heads and joined hands in homage, with reverent words honoring his power as if he were their father. When the sunlight ended, the righteous kings went to sleep.

Stars and moon moved out of sight. The sun was near to brightening the sky. In the dawn time, forest fowl clapped their wings and woke. Cranes and cicadas sounded sweetly; cuckoos called with lonely echoes in the forest. Dew fell over the earth, cooling the bodies of the troops. Bees and bhramara insects hummed, carrying flower pollen, and the wind spread fragrance, soft and sweet to the heart.

The two kings bathed and dressed, shining like the bright moon. As dawn cleared and the first light appeared, they moved the army along the forest road.

[Forest Viewing]

They entered the mountain woodland and both royal hearts were pleased. They watched flocks of male and female birds crying loudly through the forest: owls, khamin birds, baokhun birds, barabun, cranes, partridges, quails, khum, khap, magpie robins, anchan birds, karawik, five-colored birds, sattawa birds, peafowl, nori birds, ngueak-ngua birds, dokbua birds, sak birds, kwak-kwa birds, wind-eaters, doves, mynas, golden-chain birds, jungle fowl, khao-fai birds, lordly lo birds, kaling, langyang, chao birds, pheasants, cuckoos with clear voices, cockatoos, parrots, tranai birds, bamboo birds, soira birds, and forest kraven birds; kradang birds, rang-nan birds, gulls, nok-hok birds flew wheeling into flocks of swans. Both lords watched with delight and urged the royal chariot on.

They passed outposts and mountain forest, going painfully through the wild, and crossed the boundary of Khitkhin city. When the sun was sinking, they halted the splendid jeweled chariot, rested the brave army at the great ocean ford, and slept through the night.

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, when the halt of the army was complete, joined his hands and reported to the younger brothers of Phra Chakra: "This mountain has every kind of fragrant tree, its scent spreading to the whole summit. It is named Kanthamat mountain, where the Garuda-borne lord's pavilion was set. The joined forces of the two cities, seventy-seven seas of monkeys, all mighty in power, crossed from here to fight Thotsakan."

Then solar-line Bharata heard the son of the Sun explain the matter. He thought about the war that would clear away the yaksha line and did not enter sleep until the proper night-time. When the sun shone and golden light gleamed, he bathed, dressed in splendid ornaments, and ordered the army to move quickly.

[Forest Viewing]

As he went, he watched the many trees spread along the mountain line. Some put out fruit mixed with lovely flower-clusters; old and young leaves mingled together: yam, pradu, hukwang, trai-trang, teng, rang, krathanghan, golden krathum, krathin, inchan, chingchan, changnao, nonsi, kalong, chongkho, phobai, nangkrai, kalamphak, sakhi, khae-foi, roi-lin, saraphi, catechu, teak, pine, khontha, chambak, rok-fa, khanang, phayom, yang, sukon, agarwood, chumsaeng, salaengphan, sandalwood, phlong, wa, pring, prang, prayong, phumriang, hiang, hat, tat, tae, ketkaeo, ylang-ylang, and mahahong. Watching as he went, he urged the royal chariot onward, passing through the forest outposts.

The brave armies shouted until the earth shook. Dust covered the dawn; small trees were crushed and broken beyond order. They passed the difficult Himalayan road and reached splendid Kanthakala mountain, where they halted the army on the ocean shore.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in war, bowed his head in humble joined hands, and the monkey reported with wisdom: "This mountain marks the crossing-place to the yaksha city. When Phra Narai came with his army, he had the soldiers build the road across. When he had subdued the war and returned, he halted by the great ocean shore and shot his victorious arrow to clear the road away, hoping that ships and boats of merchants could travel and trade. Then Phra Narai moved the army back to his city."

Then radiant solar-line Bharata and the younger brother of Pali gave royal command: "Listen, monkey kings, brave ones of mighty power. Now we must cross the army to great Lanka city. Since the road has been broken into gaps great and small, should we fill and join it again, or what do you think is proper?"

Then the brave monkey kings bowed their heads and received the words. They reported to the younger brothers of the crown-bearing lord. Some said, "Your servants will volunteer to break great Meru mountain and cast it over the sea so the monkey troops can cross." Some said, "We will dam the ocean and make the water stop and dry into a great road." Some said, "We will scoop the great army into our hands and fly to the demon city." But the monkey lord Nilaphat joined his hands and answered the command: "The monkey kings and attendants have had great merit from former times. Whatever they do will fulfill their thought by power like a turning weapon. But I, who am loyal, have no merit in any deed yet. May Your Majesty show favor above my head. I ask to lay down my splendid monkey body over the water so the king may lead the army across."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the monkey kings and gave command: "What all of you have planned could be done by brave power. But the powerful son of Phra Kal has already offered service to Phra Chakri. Let this companion do the work, so we may see the brave strength of this splendid monkey. Do not make him lose heart or lose his chance as servant of the four-armed lord."

Then fierce Nilaphat, skilled in war, received the command of the mighty lord, joined his hands, and hurried out.

When he reached the ocean shore, he halted at the line of the great road, joined his hands, recited mighty spells, steadied his heart, and shaped his body by power.

By the force of his skilled spells, the splendid monkey's body grew vast, taller and larger than Mount Meru, and lay stretched across the sea from shore to shore.

Then noble solar-line Bharata, when the road was finished by the power and authority of the son of Phra Kal, rejoiced because the plan had succeeded. The mighty king set the warriors in motion, driving the gleaming jeweled chariot quickly across the great water.

O royal chariot: the nine-gem wheels and rims shone bright; the body and yoke were lovely, with three curved points and delicate gold tracery. The pavilion, throne, and petal-mounted frame had shining gold-studded rails. The descending tiers were encircled with images and crestwork, five peaks beautiful like Vejayanta. It was harnessed with proud palahaka horses, and the charioteer drove skillfully as if turning a discus. Shatrughna, the younger brother sharing life, sat in front, sword at his side, splendid in bearing. Parasols and clustered standards shone yellow-bright. They moved in battle order. Chaiyam waved the flag before the troops. Trumpets, conches, gongs, and drums sounded loudly. The ocean rolled in waves and splashed water as the soldiers hurried, racing one another onward.

They reached the shore of Lanka city and halted the great army, setting it down in formation according to the array in which it had marched.

Then strong, fierce Nilaphat, when the soldiers had crossed and reached the ocean shore, changed back from his manifested form and remained in his body as before. He entered the army formation and waited for the king to proceed.

Then blessed radiant Bharata spoke words asking the powerful younger brother of Pali: "When the holy arm-line lord came to subdue the yakshas and set up the army pavilion, where was that great victory-ground?"

Then Sukhrip, of noble disposition, heard the younger brother of the lord of the three worlds, bowed in homage, and answered: "When the Garuda-borne lord led the splendid monkey army here, Phiphek guided the king to set camp at Emerald Mountain."

Then noble solar-line Bharata heard the son of the Sun. The sky-ruling lord ordered the victorious chariot to move from the shore. The soldiers shouted until the earth shook, brandishing weapons like flames, and hurried along the forest road.

When they reached the place near the splendid Emerald Mountain, he halted the army and gave command, ordering the son of the Sun: "You of famed and brave power, set up the army camp and pavilion on this lasting victory-ground."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, skilled in war, received the command of the younger brother of the four-armed lord, joined his hands, took leave, and went out.

He assigned sections and sides among all the soldiers great and small, telling them to set up the victorious camp and pavilion at the place near the four-armed lord's former site. He arranged inspectors and captains who had checked the ground before, appointing them to direct the monkeys, drive them on, hurry them, and gather them together.

Then the host of soldiers all ran in busy confusion, crowding together to work in uproar. Some cut wood, hauled it, and shaped posts; some leveled and smoothed noisily. They immediately raised a beautiful golden pavilion with two splendid front halls, audience halls, side halls for swords on left and right, landings, terraces, and rows across the field; council halls for war, and a three-layer camp-wall surrounding the ground like a border; chariot houses and royal horse stables, with strong diamond-like ramparts. Forts, walls, and lines of guns in three layers were all finished together according to command.

Then the two younger brothers of Phra Narai stepped down from the sky-bright jeweled chariot and ascended the splendid pavilion.

They lowered themselves onto the bright radiant throne, with soldiers from both cities joining hands and bowing their heads in homage. Then they consulted on royal business with the splendid monkey officers: "We will raise the army to charge and attack Lanka, capture Waranisun the asura and Thotsaphin the yaksha, and kill them so their lives end. What does each of you think?"

Then Sukhrip, of noble disposition, heard the younger brother of the lord of the three worlds, bowed, and answered the command: "If we raise the army to take Lanka by the power of our warriors, the demon people and soldiers will also be crushed along with the city. Thao Wichian Brahma is in the hands of the yakshas, and Thotsaphin the asura might kill him to death. That would cause displeasure beneath the lotus feet, and the Avatara might rebuke us. Let us appoint a victorious soldier, quick and wise, to go in and summon that one to attend the righteous king. If he stubbornly refuses to come out, then raise the army to fight."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the son of the Sun, and the king approved everything. He gave royal command: "You are the elder here. Which monkey do you judge fit to go speak with the kumbhanda?"

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, received the command of the younger brother of the Garuda-borne lord, bowed, and answered: "The splendid monkey Si Chomphuphan, ruler of Pangtan city, is senior, steady-hearted, quick in bearing and wisdom, knowledgeable in royal business and war, upright enough to trust. Let him carry Your Majesty's command and speak with that Thotsaphin."

Then solar-line Bharata, lord of the bow, heard the monkey lord's words and was glad. He ordered Si Chomphuphan: "You, wise and brave one, take this royal business into Lanka city. Tell Painasuriyawong, who holds the yaksha realm, that I, powerful younger brother of four-armed Phra Chakri, command the asura to come attend me at Emerald Mountain. Listen and see whether his strength and power will be humble or hard."

Then Si Chomphuphan, the great soldier, bowed his head, received the command of the lord of the earth, paid homage, and crawled out.

The monkey lord leapt forth and displayed power. His roar thundered through every quarter. He kicked upward through the clouds and flew to Lanka city.

When he arrived, he floated in the middle of the sky before the yaksha window. He saw Painasuriyawong the asura among the kumbhanda troops and roared this proclamation: "Hey, deluded Thotsaphin! I am a strong soldier of the Garuda-borne Avatara, who came from Vaikuntha and the Ocean of Milk, with gods as soldiers in his train. He has sent his younger brothers to subdue demons, and I bear Bharata's command. Because you were arrogant, joined with your guardian as a traitor, brought Cakkrawat's army in deceit, and seized Phiphek the asura's rank, he commands you to attend him at splendid Emerald Mountain. He will question you properly on the matter. That is why I have come."

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, sitting amid the ministers, heard the voice crying from the sky, saying it brought the royal command of the younger brother of the bow-bearing Avatara. He looked through the window and saw the powerful monkey. He was startled as if Lord Death had struck and cut open his chest to take his heart. He sat stiff and stunned, thinking, "This is exactly as my mother said. This time Lanka will meet fierce trouble and killing. But if I do not answer, I will be ashamed before the ministers." Having thought this, he asked Waranisun, the guardian yaksha and his kinsman: "This monkey who came speaking, what family and lineage is he? He says he is a soldier of Phra Harirak. Do you know him? What is his name? What city was originally his?"

Then Waranisun the yaksha reported to Thotsaphin the asura: "This monkey is named Chomphuphan. He is not born of the splendid monkey line. The lord of mighty Kailasa formed him from sweat and grime and gave him to Pali to raise as a son, before Ongkhot had yet been born. When the monkey king died, the people and soldiers scattered through the city. Sukhrip captured him and presented him to Phra Ram. He fought the war against the yakshas; when the fighting in Lanka was finished, he became ruler of Pangtan city."

Then mighty, brave-hearted Thotsaphin heard his guardian explain the matter. The demon lord gnashed his teeth and cried: "Hey, monkey! You are proud, ugly, and deluded, servant of unrighteous humans, ordered by them to come here. I am of the Brahma-line, crown of the asura yakshas. Why do you speak so arrogantly beyond the face of a monkey? Hurry down and pay homage, bow at my lotus feet first. Then you will be fitting as a guest of the city, according to fine royal custom."

Then victorious Si Chomphuphan heard Thotsaphin's speech. The monkey lord grew angry as poisoned fire and cried: "Hey, little son! Your words are false and wicked. Do you not know that Phra Kal of mighty power will come to take your life away? If you resist the royal command, there is no way your life will survive. Do not be arrogant and proud. Say whether you will go or not."

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, heard and grew furious. The asura answered at once: "Hey, hey, listen, Chomphuphan. Royal Lanka city is delightful as the tiers of Dusadi heaven, a meeting-place of the three worlds. My mighty father ruled this realm. Your lord Rama is unrighteous. Joining with Phiphek the asura, seeing only wealth and estates, he acted corruptly from envy. He raised troops across the great ocean and killed my father. When the lord of Maliwan learned it, he brought his great army. Phiphek arrogantly came out to fight, was captured, and would have been killed, but I begged for mercy, and the king spared his life. He set me, of the Brahma line, to rule the wealth of Lanka. I am born a male warrior. Monkey, do not speak insolently. As for going to attend at the pavilion, Lanka is not subject to Bharata."

Then bold-hearted Chomphuphan cried: "Hey, traitor! Are you not ashamed before the subjects, officers, and ministers? Phiphek raised you and loved you like a child of his own body. You should feel shame for such ingratitude, vile one with a hardened face who calls himself good. Your father, with ten heads and twenty hands, died by the power of the splendid arrow. All his friends, kin, and line, Intharachit, the asura, and Kumbhakarna, though all were powerful in rank and might, had their lives ended. What are you, like a fly? You are nothing before the royal arrow."

Then Thotsaphin of the line of Thao Khanlaihong cried: "Hey, forest monkey, do not speak so proudly. My whole lineage is Brahma-born, glorious in power, subduing every direction. When your lord brought the army, it was only because Phiphek told the stratagems that he gained victory over the asura host. This time I think you will be hard pressed. Do not boast of battle-power. You will all lose your lives, the whole victorious army. Go tell the lord who sent you that I will come out, have no doubt. Tomorrow I will raise my great army and fight, so we may see one another's hands."

Then mighty Chomphuphan pointed at the kumbhanda and cried: "Unrighteous one, many times your father's son. Pali and the ten-faced one were not enough; nor Phiphek the yaksha, nor mighty Hanuman, to satisfy your heart. I see you are grateful indeed: you went to Maliwan, brought victorious Thao Cakkrawat, and delivered him to your mother in the city. Bold-mouthed father's son, arrogant to fight with the younger brother of holy Phra Chakri, you will lose your life."

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, was ashamed before the kumbhanda host and angry as final fire touching his heart. He stamped his foot and roared with a crashing voice: "Hey, vile forest monkey! I do not know when your birth occurred. You are only the sweat and grime of the Kailasa lord, formed into a splendid monkey and given as Pali's servant. Today you will die." Having spoken, he ordered the warriors: "Seize that low-born animal. Cut off his head and stake it at once, fitting the insult he gave me."

Then the strong troops had no choice but to receive the kumbhanda's command. They ran out in confusion together.

But when they would charge in and seize the monkey, they remembered their fear of his power and could not act. They gnashed their teeth and made fierce sounds from far away, then fled beyond the asura's reach.

Then victorious Si Chomphuphan heard the asura's words and grew angry as the fire at the end of an age. He cried aloud: "Hey, deluded child! When you were first born in the womb, just as Thotsakan was destroyed, Phiphek put a head and tail onto you. Now you stand arrogant and call yourself great. I will do what satisfies my heart." Having spoken, he went down at once.

When he arrived, he leapt up onto the throne-seat, displaying authority like a royal lion. He rushed and kicked Thotsaphin the asura, knocking him from the splendid seat. Then he clawed his head and slapped and struck him until blood streamed over the yaksha's body. With his great power, he pinned the demon's chest beneath his foot.

He cried: "Hey, ugly wretch! Do you know my hand now or not? You were arrogant and proud to fight, led on by that vile knowing one. Only because I fear exceeding the command do I restrain my heart. Take these wounds and show them to your mother. I am sparing your life." Speaking, he drew his sword and swung it, its radiance blazing through the sky, kicked upward into the clouds, and went straight to the shining pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of radiant solar-line Bharata. He reported the asura's words, spoken in fierce arrogance: "My heart wished to bind him and bring him here, but I feared exceeding the command. Tomorrow he will raise the demon army and come to fight Your Majesty."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the royal monkey lord and found it fully to his mind. The king praised Chomphuphan: "You are worthy to be a great soldier, endowed with power and swift wisdom. When sent, you accomplish exactly what the heart intends. As for that Thotsaphin the asura, he has reached what Brahma has written." Having spoken, the mighty lord took up his blazing sword and entered the pavilion.
