This is the ninety-first สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Thotsaphin's shame after Si Chomphuphan's embassy, Montho's warning, Yamaliwan and Kanyuwek secretly reporting to Bharata, Thotsaphin marching out with Waranisun, Asuraphat capturing them in battle, Phiphek's release from prison, and Thotsaphin's execution and Montho's lament.

Thotsaphin Falls

Then, on Thotsaphin the yaksha's side, after mighty Chomphuphan had gone from Lanka city, he was hurt, ashamed, and furious, suffering in heart as if fire seared him. "Alas! What a waste to have armies, all excellent men, counted by seas. Yet one monkey came in, and they could not help seize and kill him." The more he thought, the more anger tightened his heart. Tears filled and covered his face. "O, this time I am as if fallen among enemies." Thinking and grieving more and more, the yaksha lord went to attend his mother.

Then soft Lady Montho, beloved lady, was in the splendid palace. The beautiful one glanced aside and saw her royal son coming, blood flowing over his body. The young lady was startled and alarmed; she ran to receive her beloved son.

She led him by the hand to the throne-seat. The chief queen stroked him gently and, examining his face, spoke: "What has happened to you, my child, beloved of your mother? Why is your whole body bruised dark and blue, with blood upon you?"

Then Thotsaphin, of the line of Thao Khanlaihong, tears filling and falling from his eyes, bowed at the feet of his mother and reported: "Today Bharata sent a soldier named Chomphuphan, the splendid monkey. He came crying words, ordering that this son be summoned out. That monkey was arrogant and spoke grossly. When your son answered him, he grew angry and humiliated me without measure. I have come up to take leave at your lotus feet, to raise the fourfold brave army, repay that base wretch's hand, and destroy him until his life is gone."

Then soft Lady Montho, heavenly lady, heard as if someone had struck and cut her. Her body shook; she embraced her son. "O Thotsaphin, child of your mother, beloved one, you did not listen when I spoke. Because of Waranisun the asura, this has happened. When your father believed the words of the yaksha woman Sammanakkha and stole Lady Sita, I opposed him, but he grew angry. All kin and lineage were lost; Lanka suffered calamity as if burned by fire. As for you going out to fight the younger brother of the four-armed lord, it is like a moth entering poisonous flame. Your mother is burning in heart as if pierced by an arrow." Speaking, the beautiful one grieved and lost composure.

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, saw his holy mother grieving and lamenting. His thought sank further, tears bathing the yaksha's face. He embraced his mother's feet and wept in sorrow.

Then pride and arrogance rose in his thought: "I am of the Brahma-born line. The three worlds know it. Why should I love life? Even if I die, I will keep honor and make fame appear." Thinking this, he forced himself steady, bowed, and reported to his mother: "This son's shame and anger are such that death would be better. Stay here in ease. I ask leave to raise the army and go fight."

Then soft Lady Montho, beloved lady, heard and grew still more distressed. The beautiful one spoke: "Listen to your mother's words, eye-jewel and beloved child. Do not be proud and arrogant, leading brave soldiers out to fight. The asura host and yaksha officers have long feared the power of the splendid monkeys; they may turn into enemy folk, and you are likely to die. Release Phiphek first. I will beg him instead. Have him brought to attend the younger brothers, and I think your life may be spared."

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, heard and grew angry as final fire. He gnashed his teeth until the sound rang out, sprang up, and stamped his foot so the earth shook. He roared through the victory palace: "How can matters have come to this? Phiphek is an enemy; I wanted to cut off his head and stake it at the city gate, fitting his betrayal of the lineage. Only fearing blame through earth, sky, and heaven restrained me. Even if life must end, do not think I will bow to humans. All beings born in the three worlds escape nothing written by Brahma. Even powerful gods and Brahmas should not think they can escape death. I will fight without thinking of my body. Even if I die, that is better." Having spoken, he did not take leave in homage, but returned to the asura palace.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the white umbrella of glory and gave command to the guardian who shared his heart: "Prepare horses, chariots, elephants, and warriors as a great army formation. Tomorrow I will march out to fight the humans and monkeys."

Then Waranisun, skilled in war, received the command of the son of the twenty-handed king and walked out from the audience hall.

He mustered the four divisions of soldiers according to army order. Foot troops held bows, strong men long experienced in fighting. The horse troops all rode mind-made horses, proud and swift as lions; their riders held lances and swung them to display power. The elephant troops rode elephants victorious in war, roaring, trunk-swinging, tusks striking; mahouts and elephant-doctors held bright hooks, swinging poisonous light into the sky. Chariot lords mounted war-chariots, holding bows, hands flexing to test the strings. Officers and men were complete and ready in formation, ranged across the earth.

Then the host of asura yakshas whispered to one another: "This time Thotsaphin will fight, together with Waranisun the asura. There is no doubt they will not escape death. We have done no wrong at all, but we will surely lose our lives." The yaksha soldiers and officers made fierce sounds, laughing and smiling. Officers and men teased one another, each amused at the thought of entering battle.

Then Yamaliwan the yaksha and Kanyuwek the asura, brothers, learned that Thotsaphin would march out to war against the bow-bearing younger brother of Phra Hari's line. Fear seemed to make them sink through the earth, and the asuras hurried away together.

When they arrived, they bowed at the feet of their royal mother, beloved lady, and reported: "Now the four-armed lord, powerful as final fire, has made Bharata and Shatrughna commanders of the fourfold brave army. They have crossed the waters and camped at Emerald Mountain. He sent one monkey in to summon Thotsaphin the yaksha. That one spoke arrogantly, and the monkey lord slapped and struck him before returning. We three, mother and sons, have no guilt; yet we may all be killed. How can we escape death?"

Then Lady Suwan Kanyuma, shining in beauty, heard both her beloved sons and spoke: "What you say is very good, beloved children, highest loves of your mother. Slip out of Lanka at night. Find victorious Phraya Anuchit and explain the matter to the splendid monkey. Have him bring you to attend the king. We will escape punishment and danger."

Then the two princes, noble in disposition, heard their mother and agreed. They bowed at her feet, left the shining crystal chamber, and the kumbhandas looked left and right. Seeing everything silent and hidden from sight, they flew away together in the night.

When they reached Emerald Mountain, they saw the splendid monkey troops sitting as watchmen by fires in groups. The asuras went straight in, sat down, and explained the matter to the monkey watchmen and great captains: "We have come out from the victorious city to attend the powerful lord of the earth. Where is victorious Phraya Anuchit, greatest soldier of Phra Narai the king? Please show mercy and bring us to meet him now."

Then the splendid monkey watchmen heard the two asuras and rejoiced. They led them in together.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier. The two victorious princes paid homage and explained the matter.

Then the son of Phra Phai, honored in rank, heard and rejoiced. He brought them to attend the younger brother of the four-armed lord.

When they arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the solar-line king, bearer of the bow: "The mighty sons of Intharachit have secretly left the city. The elder is named Yamaliwan, the younger Kanyuwek the yaksha. They report that Thotsaphin the asura will march out tomorrow to fight. The two princes offer to seize him and present him. May Your Majesty, mighty lord of the earth, favor these kumbhandas."

Then solar-line Bharata heard the son of Phra Phai and rejoiced. The righteous king said: "I thank these two of the solar line, loyal and true, who offer service. Hurry back into the city; let there be no suspicion. Help each other stay alert and take care over Phiphek the yaksha, lest that one kill or strike him and cause trouble."

Then the two brave-hearted asuras received the command of the younger brother of the Avatara, joined their hands, took leave, and flew back into Lanka.

Then Thotsaphin the yaksha lay on his couch, thinking over his march to battle: "I am still very young and have never broken through in war. If I send ministers to victorious Maliwan city to report beneath my royal father's feet, the road is far and they may not arrive in time, for the enemy has crossed the sea. I must raise the army and fight until life ends, so that honor remains in the world until the end of the age." He kept rising and sitting, unable to sleep, until the sun's strong light appeared. He left the shining crystal couch and went to bathe.

He entered the cleansing bath, fragrant water filling the air with scent. His lower cloth had coiled-vine designs like flying swans; his robe showed kinnari figures dancing. Side panels and hanging ends were curled leafwork set with lovely green emerald ornaments. His upper garment was raised gold on black, and his scale armor was alternated with coral and gems. Chest straps, jeweled clasps, and chains shone like fireflies. Direction-plates and cut-gem ornaments floated bright; armlets were strung like gold cords. Nine-crested diamond rings, blazing, were set on all ten fingers. He wore a jeweled crown, earrings and ear ornaments, with delicate flowers of ruby at the side, golden garlands hanging. He put on his victorious sword and took up his bow, beautiful like Intharachit the asura, then went to the jeweled chariot-platform.

Then Yamaliwan and Kanyuwek the yakshas reported to Thotsaphin the asura as he prepared to lead the army out to fight: "We two are angry and suffering, blood almost flowing from our eyes, because arrogant humans killed our father and ended the life of our mighty grandfather, the solar line. We ask to serve by going into battle and destroying the enemy host until they die."

Then Thotsaphin Sitthisak the yaksha heard as if heavenly nectar had reached him. He clapped his hands and laughed in joy. "You are the glorious sons of my elder brother, famed in power, of the solar Brahma-line crown. We will share life together. Be my left and right wings. Strike everywhere without holding back the army. Seize the two human brothers and cut them to pieces in your hands." Having spoken, he mounted the splendid chariot and set the demon soldiers in motion. Front flags waved to lead the army, and he went out from the city.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were crystal, set with alternating colors. Its body and curved yoke were gentle, jewel-bright, with a pavilion set above the floating throne. Lions were pressed close in rows; garudas spread their arms to hold hanging nagas. Its four faces blazed with gem colors, and its high peak floated upward into the sky. Four thousand great lions were harnessed to it, roaring like storm-winds and rain. Lothan drove it hurriedly, eager and restless. High insignia covered the clouds above; golden flags, layered flags, and three-tailed victory flags led in front. Pipes and drums thundered in uproar, and the soldiers crowded densely onward. They were not joyful; they forced shouts in ranks, and their voices were not in unison. Elephants and horses panicked through the whole army, while the great forces hurried on.

When they reached the battlefield, he halted and set them along the foot of the mountain, in the Garuda-spread formation, waiting for the monkey army to advance.

Then noble solar-line Bharata went out from the golden pavilion, splendid like Lord Indra, together with the monkey kings of Chomphu city and Khitkhin, who lay attending across the earth. When he heard the mighty sound, he knew Thotsaphin the asura had raised his great army and would come to fight. The king rejoiced because the plan had succeeded.

He spoke sweet command by royal decree to the son of the Sun, the mighty and victorious one: "Prepare the soldiers and brave monkeys. We will march out to fight and destroy Thotsaphin the asura."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, received the command of the mighty king, joined his hands in homage, and came out.

He placed Prince Asuraphat in command of the vanguard soldiers. Mighty Nilaphat became the firm division directing the monkeys. Brave Si Chomphuphan was the flanking guard, general to meet the foe first. The royal division of the powerful younger brothers of Phra Narai became the center of the army. Behind, he set Dviphat as adjutant division of the splendid monkeys. After that, Wisanta Rawi commanded the reserve that would cut through. Nilan Khan the monkey was set over the rear guard. Left wing and right wing were complete, all the officers arranged. Forest scouts, outer watchers, three-spear and seven-spear troops, all brave, swung their weapons in uproar, joyful and filling the earth.

Then radiant Bharata and Shatrughna, when the good auspicious hour came, went to the bathing place.

The two kings bathed in ease; crystal sprinklers scattered spray like rain. They used fragrant scented water blended with golden flower pollen. Each put on lower cloth with coiled designs, set with emerald and topaz gems, and different-colored robes with Garuda hems, hands grasping and holding nagas. Side panels and hanging ends had swan-scroll patterns. Their upper robes were brocade with bands crossing the field. Direction-plates, breast ornaments, chains, cut-gem bracelets, and armlets adorned them. Diamond rings in petal mounts, yellow and bright, gleamed with flashes of rainbow light. Each wore a crown with flowers at the side, crystal earrings and ear ornaments. Beautiful in bearing, body, and majesty, they put on mighty swords, took up bows, and walked gracefully one after the other to mount the victorious chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were all emerald crystal. Its beautiful curved yoke and layered tiers floated with rows of gems. Images around the surface stood in ordered rows; the pavilion had lotus-upturned posts and five peaks rising high into the bright sky, with crystal inlays and crestwork screens. Ten noble Sindhava horses, clean and white as conch, were harnessed to it. The charioteer drove at speed, and Shatrughna sat in front with joined hands. The high insignia were complete, with jeweled fans, rows of streamers, and radiant umbrellas. Pipes, drums, gongs, and curved trumpets answered one another, the sound echoing and shaking the forest. The monkeys shouted to seize the auspicious hour, and the three worlds trembled in commotion. Dust blew in smoky darkness as the troops hurried on.

When they reached the battlefield, they looked and saw the yaksha army set densely along the forest line. The sky-ruling lord halted the soldiers.

Then he ordered the son of Vayu, famed in fierce power: "Hurry the vanguard into battle. Strike the asura army and crush it."

Then brave-hearted Asuraphat, great in power, bowed his head and received the words of the powerful younger brother of the Avatara. He rejoiced as if he had gained the jeweled gem of a world-ruling king, then led the army straight toward the front of the kumbhanda force.

When he drew near, he roared like a lion, stamped his foot until the ground shook and rolled, swung his weapons like final fire, and shouted mockery in rough words: "Hey, Painasuriyawong! You boast of your battle-power and bravery. Today your life will end because you came arrogantly to fight. You did not first consider your strength; you could not even stand against one monkey. Hurry to great Maliwan city and tell your father to come fight. His four heads will be cut off by the bright arrow of the radiant younger brother of the four-armed lord. The army will not even weary its feet marching to strike Maliwan. If you still love life, abandon the deluded crooked road. Hurry to attend the righteous king, and your life will be spared."

Then brave-hearted solar-line Thotsaphin heard and grew angry as final fire. The demon lord cried in answer: "Hah, look at you, son of a monkey. Your words are arrogant and gross. You praise humans, small as spider threads. Who should fear their power? I am of the Brahma-line, famous in might through every quarter. I have never bowed to anyone; I am a great support of the kumbhandas. You and the lord whose bravery you boast of will be destroyed by me and will die. I will not let you survive to Maliwan city. Do not speak in delusion."

Then the victorious grandson of Phra Phai heard and grew angry as fire. Pointing at his face, he answered with rough words: "Do not raise yourself beyond your face, boasting of solar-line rank and proud courage. The holy Avatara is lord over all demons in Lanka. He graciously made my grandfather and your mother beloved companions. You and I were just born; are you not the child of my household, or what? My grandfather was only your foster-father, but he loved you like a child of his own body. His grace surpasses the three worlds, and yet you have done this. Your head will be cut off before you know it by the hand of me, the radiant one. Do not boast that you are good. Now we will see."

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, heard, gnashed his teeth, shook, and roared mightily: "Hey, hey, asuras and demon host, all soldiers great and small, hurry in and strike the army to pieces. Seize that Asuraphat now."

Then the yaksha warriors heard Thotsaphin the asura command them to attack the monkey army. Their fear was like a herd of deer long defeated by the power of a lion. When they saw mighty Asuraphat, the troops rejoiced. They pretended to swing their weapons as if entering battle to kill, gnashed their teeth, then turned their backs and ran into the forest.

Then victorious Asuraphat saw the soldiers split and flee in confusion. He clapped his hands, laughed, and mocked: "Hey, lord of Lanka's realm! Your armies, counted by seas and packed full, where have they all gone, instead of fighting?"

Then Prince Thotsaphin, skilled in war, grew still more furious, blazing like coals. He swung his bow and stamped his foot: "Hey, son of an animal, I will destroy you and end your life." Having spoken, he drew the bow with power, and the asura shot.

The arrows whirled in the air, spread everywhere beyond counting, sounding mighty as they closed around Asuraphat in uproar.

Then the victorious grandson of Phra Phai leapt and sprang by his power, gathering the arrows the asura had shot.

He caught them all in his fist. The asura laughed aloud: "Hey, hey, listen, wicked fool. Whose weapons are these? Looking at you, I see only half a body; you have no shadow of a head." Speaking, he quickly broke the arrows and threw them back at once. Then he leapt onto the kumbhanda's chariot, kicked Lothan the charioteer, smashed the royal chariot apart, and chased Thotsaphin the asura, striking him.

Then the son of ten-faced Thotsakan blocked and parried back and forth, and the asura leapt into battle.

Each struck and seized the other in confusion; neither lowered his hands. They twisted and moved with quick skill, each fleeing and chasing in turmoil.

Then mighty Asuraphat pressed the fight, grappled, struck, and stood firm, rushing in to attack.

With his left foot he stepped on the yaksha's right knee; with his hand he snatched away the bow. He struck the son of the twenty-handed king, and by his power threw him down onto the ground.

Then the two splendid sons of Intharachit, seeing their chance, moved to seize the asura and leapt in.

The elder seized his left arm, the younger seized his right arm. Mighty Asuraphat leapt in swiftly and clawed the hair of Waranisun, the guardian kinsman. All three asuras rejoiced and immediately brought them in for presentation.

Then radiant blessed Bharata, when he had gained victory and captured the royal enemy, rejoiced because his thought had been fulfilled. His face shone like the moon, and he gave command: "Listen, son of the Sun, you of mighty power. This Thotsaphin and his guardian have schemed deceitfully as traitors, a great crime. Bind them firmly so the wicked can be questioned. As for mighty Asuraphat, go into the royal city of Lanka with the victorious sons of Intharachit and release Phiphek, lord of demons, and bring him out." Having commanded, he set the soldiers in motion, the monkey troops on left and right shouting so the world shook, and returned to the shining pavilion.

Then victorious Asuraphat, with Yamaliwan the asura and wise Kanyuwek, when the two holy younger brothers had moved the battle troops, led a host of demon soldiers into the royal city of Lanka.

When they arrived, they went straight to the great prison where the yaksha king was held, bowed down at the feet of their grandfather, and wept.

They reported: "This grandson went to attend radiant Lord Phra Narai. He set Bharata and Shatrughna as army commanders to come fight. They have captured the two traitors who rebelled. Now the mighty king commands us to release our grandfather." Having reported, they entered and removed all five bonds, freeing their grandfather from imprisonment.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha, when the restraints had left his body by the power of the lord of the three worlds, rejoiced beyond thought, as if he had died and been born again. He embraced his grandson and said: "Child, you are my heart and eyes. Your grandfather endured torture and misery, almost losing life. If not for you, wise one, I would have died. When Mahaban came to fight, I lost the advantage and nearly lost life; only because your father came in time and helped me fight did victory come. You and your father have grace toward me beyond comparison in all three worlds." Having spoken, he led the beloved grandson to the jeweled victory palace.

Then the officers of royal garments, royal priests, ascetics, brahman elders, ministers, attendants, and all who were there learned that the king of the city had come to the glorious palace. Each rejoiced and came running together in uproar.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads at the feet of the Brahma-line royal lord, filling the audience hall in dense crowds everywhere.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha cleansed and bathed his body and put on jeweled ornaments. Then he moved gracefully from the nine-gem shining palace, together with ministers and soldiers, and walked out from the city.

When he reached the army pavilion beside great Emerald Mountain, with the beloved grandson who shared his life, he went to attend the righteous king.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of the fashioned younger brother of Phra Hari's line, amid the brave soldiers, and the kumbhanda waited to hear the royal command.

Then solar-line Bharata, lord of the realm, when he saw Phiphek come out, rejoiced. The sky-ruling lord spoke graciously: "Listen, yaksha king. You are an excellent astrologer, as if possessing divine knowledge. You know present and future, measuring them with brave wisdom, and see everything near and far; none on earth equals you. Why did you raise a snake-child, not knowing your life would be endangered? If Asuraphat the kumbhanda had not gone to report the matter, mighty Phra Hari's line, favoring the yaksha king, would not have sent us brothers to march here and stop the danger in battle. Thotsaphin the asura and Waranisun have been captured. Now they are firmly bound, and the wicked will be investigated."

Then wise and brave Phiphek raised his hands and answered the words of the powerful younger brother of the Avatara: "This servant was deluded and confused by affection. I thought him a child of my own breast and thus offended the feet of the mighty lord, causing armies to be mustered and brought here to fight. This fault is vast enough to cost life. Only because Phra Chakkrit showed mercy have I survived and remained a servant beneath the splendid feet. His grace surpasses sky and earth; nothing can compare."

Then solar-line Bharata heard the kumbhanda king and gave command: "Our holy elder brother sent us to raise the brave army and subdue the asura demon host according to the supreme avatar line. We are greatly delighted, as if someone had placed the jewel of a world-ruling king in our hands. We do not think of hardship or distress; we will keep this honor through the age." Having spoken, he ordered the younger brother of Pali: "Bring Waranisun the yaksha and Thotsaphin the asura here, so their accomplices can be examined."

Then Sukhrip, son of the bright Sun, received the command of the divine-line lord, bowed, and hurried out at once.

He ordered the monkey police to bring Thotsaphin the yaksha and Waranisun the asura and tie them at the front court.

Then the brave chief monkey police and the city execution-wardens brought the two demon lords into the stocks. They tied their feet and waists, whipped and drove them, squeezed their hands and temples, tightened ropes and knocked warnings back and forth, some threatening, some cursing without pity.

Then the chief monkey scribe set the charge and threatened inquiry: "Hey, Thotsaphin the asura. Lanka is captive beneath the feet of radiant Lord Phra Narai, who set Phiphek and Queen Montho to rule the heavenly city. You were not yet born; when you were born and grew strong, why did you say Thotsakan was your father? Where did you learn this? Who told you that Cakkrawat was friend of dead Thotsakan? Thus you dared without fear to slip away and bring an army to fight, to bind Phiphek in prison and set yourself over the royal realm of Lanka. When the king came and summoned you to answer, you still spoke with fierce pride. As for the companions who knowingly joined the plot, do not hide anything small or great. Speak quickly. If you do not tell, the asura will be whipped until life ends."

Then Thotsaphin the yaksha, aching in every limb, gave testimony: "At first I was playing in the royal garden. Waranisun, the elder, made me cry and laugh in mockery. Suspicious, I questioned him, and he told me that my father was named Thotsakan, and that Phiphek, the beloved younger yaksha brother, wanted to gain Lanka's wealth and had brought war upon us, killing the kin and lineage, including Thotsakan the yaksha, then becoming crown of the asuras in the victorious city. I was born male, and could not bear the anger and shame. My guardian then led me to great Maliwan city. Only we two knew and planned it. This is true and honest; I do not lie. The offense deserves death. It rests with your mercy and compassion."

Then the splendid monkey scribe immediately checked Thotsaphin the asura's words against Waranisun: "Now your lord has cast it onto you, saying you were the main cause, urging and leading everything until distrust and estrangement arose, until calamity and killing happened because of your words, deluded one. No other person is involved; you planned with him from the beginning." While questioning, he ordered the wood struck as warning. "Is this true or not, yaksha? Hurry and testify now, or your life will end."

Then Waranisun the yaksha clenched his teeth and held his breath in the stocks, staying silent and saying nothing. After many knocks and warnings, he could no longer endure; he cried, "Everything is true. Please spare my life."

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of the radiant younger brother of Phra Hari's line and reported the asuras' words fully from the beginning.

Then solar-line Bharata heard the son of the Sun and gave command at once: "The words these two asuras have testified are not true in full. If we pry and press the matter further, it seems it may reach Montho, his mother. I will leave this matter to Ongkhot and fashioned Thao Thotsakhiriwong. Hurry and take the two kumbhandas on public circuit, then behead them today."

Then Sukhrip and Phiphek the yaksha bowed their heads, received the royal words, joined their hands in homage, and went out.

They had the asura and the monkey lord take Thotsaphin the yaksha and Waranisun the asura to carry out the righteous king's command.

Then the strong guards of Chakra-Narai received the order, took the two kumbhandas, and led them into the victorious city.

When they arrived, they beat gongs and had proclamation cried along the great streets. Some struck, some drove them on in turn, without mercy or compassion.

Then Thotsaphin, solar-line yaksha, and the guardian who shared his life could no longer endure the punishment. In pain, they had to cry out: "Everyone, do not take us as example. We rebelled against the feet of Phra Chakra the Avatara. We brought the army of Cakkrawat the asura to seize Lanka's royal realm, and captured Phiphek, lord of demons, binding and exposing him in prison."

Then men and women, city people great and small, saw them leading Thotsaphin in public circuit, blood flowing and dripping all over his body. They ran in confusion to look, lining the two sides of the street, left and right. Those who loved him could barely look fully, their pity beyond thought. Those who hated him said, "It serves him right. Who told him to do wrong and bring us to death, along with all kin and friends?"

Then Thotsaphin the yaksha, bruised and suffering more than ever, was led by the monkeys on public circuit. Seeing his mother's palace, he raised his hands and folded his fingers in homage. Tears filled his eyes; he sighed in longing and lamented: "O holy mother, who bore my head into being, you sustained and raised your child from youth until I grew strong, never leaving me forlorn. Your grace surpasses sky and earth, greater than Sumeru, the universe, and mountains. I have not yet repaid my mother, and now I must leave your feet in helplessness. After me you will only weep, longing for your child as if the heart were broken. You will suffer immeasurable grief because of love, tears covering your face every day. With little merit, I have not served your feet; now my life ends, like the moon gone dark with all its light vanished, and your eyes will grow empty day by day. Alas! If only I could bow once more at my mother's splendid feet, that would be enough. Even death would then follow my karma." Lamenting and grieving, he walked on.

Then the chief monkey executioners, when they had taken the public circuit around the victorious city, cut off the heads and staked them beside the gate.

Then Lady Montho, highest in pity, learned that her royal son had been destroyed. The young lady moaned and lamented.

"O Thotsaphin, child of your mother, beloved one, delight of my spirit. What a waste that I carried you in the womb, held the pregnancy, cherished and raised you every day until you grew. When your father had gone to heaven, seeing the face of my beloved son eased my suffering at every time. Alas, how could you have to go far away, leaving your mother alone, desolate and convulsed with weeping? I will be parted in immeasurable longing, wasting my heart over you without a day's rest. This began because I had warned you, but you would not listen, resisting in delusion. You trusted that unrighteous guardian, and so your head had to be cut off and staked like this. What a waste, born of the Brahma-line, whose power the gods feared in every sign. When Intharachit, your elder brother, went out to fight, his life ended in the clouds, but someone received his head and kept it from falling from the sky. Now you must be exposed in suffering as if born of outcaste stock. I had meant to entrust my death-rites to you, my child, my rice-spirit, highest beloved." Lamenting, the young lady struck her breast, grieving as if life had ended.

ให้พิเภกกับมณโฑเทวี / ขึ้นผ่านธานีสวรรยา
แต่ตัวของเอ็งยังไม่เกิด / จนกำเนิดจำเริญใหญ่กล้า
เป็นไฉนจึ่งว่าใช่บิดา / ข้อนี้รู้มาแต่แห่งใด
ซึ่งว่าจักรวรรดิเป็นสหาย / ทศกัณฐ์ผู้ตายใครบอกให้
