This is the ninety-second สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Bharata preparing the march on Maliwan, Cakkrawat's ominous dream and consultation with Phra Parames, Hanuman breaking the acid-fire and acid-water gates, the army camping at Mayura Mountain, Maliwan preparing its defenses, and Nilanon carrying Bharata's royal letter to Cakkrawat.
Translation
Hanuman Breaks the Gates of Maliwan

Then Bharata, fashioned in the solar line, when the killing of the kumbhandas was finished, gave royal command. He ordered Thao Thotsakhiriwong, ruler of the yaksha realm: "We will go to the city of Maliwan, to kill powerful Cakkrawat, the thorn of war against the feet of bow-bearing Lord Phra Narai. Find a lasting auspicious hour for the army to march."

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bowed his head, gladly received the command, and took up his slate board. He calculated, multiplied, divided, and checked the royal age. He found a marching hour for the fourfold army, a great and excellent blessing. He bowed his head and reported to the solar-line king, bearer of the discus: "In three more days the moon will reach the ascendant, and Saturn will pause in Capricorn. The attacking force will be brave, like the power of Phra Kal skilled in war. May Your Majesty proceed; there will be stable victory over the enemy."

Then radiant, blessed Bharata heard and rejoiced. He gave royal words: "Listen, son of the Sun. Arrange the brave monkey warriors. As for the wise lord of Lanka, he should muster the demon troops also, so all are ready."

Then diligent Phiphek and Sukhrip received the command of the divine-line king, bowed in homage, and went out.

Sukhrip arranged the warriors, making the son of Phra Kal the vanguard. He chose asuras from Lanka as forest scouts to lead the road to Maliwan. Ongkhot, son of Pali, commanded a hard division of monkey troops; wherever the fighting was heavy, they would go in to cut through, fight, and break the battle. Next came the flank division, with fierce Hanuman, son of the Wind, as commander. The royal division was made of warriors of terrible power, swinging weapons like fire. Si Chomphuphan served as adjutant; mighty Surakan commanded the reserve. For the lord of great Lanka, the two sons of Intharachit were set as the rear guard, with dense ranks of asuras beyond counting, arranged by direction and waiting for the powerful king to proceed.

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, and mighty Shatrughna swept their hands and went to bathe.

They bathed their bodies in streams from golden sprinklers; fragrant flower-water filled the air. Their lower cloths were set with ruby gems and serpent-crest borders. Their different-colored robes had golden-threaded fields, cut with vine and swan-scroll designs. Side panels and hanging ends were serpent forms; upper garments were striped gold brocade. Direction-plates, breast ornaments with coral centers, and three emerald chains adorned them; crystal belts with carved designs, armlets, bracelets, and rings in petal mounts shone. They wore diamond crowns blazing bright, crystal earrings, garlands, and ear ornaments, with delicate flowers set at their ears. Beautiful in body, bearing, and rank, faces like fashioned gods, the two lords took bows and walked to mount the shining golden chariot.

O jeweled chariot, complete with nine gems shining bright: hubs, wheels, and spokes were carved with designs; the body, pole, and rear frame were shielded with leaf-scroll work. Tiered jeweled seats and throne were beveled, with garudas pressed close to lions and floral crests set upright. The diamond pavilion flashed with rows of crestwork; crystal posts and side panels had curved screens. Five peaks were beautiful as Indra's palace. Four Sindhava horses were harnessed, like royal lions. Shatrughna sat in front with joined hands, while the charioteer drove like carrying wind. High insignia, screens, clustered standards, victory flags, streamers, and red flags rose. Curved trumpets, foreign trumpets, gongs, pipes, and drums answered together. Yakshas and monkeys moved in ranks and divisions; the troops urged one another, shouting until the earth shook. Chaiyam waved the flag as signal, and the forces hurried onward.

They traveled through fields and forest hollows, crossing streams, ravines, cliffs, and slopes, urging the great forces on and spending hot nights in the woods.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha raised his hands and reported to the younger brother of Phra Chakri: "We have come near the outposts of Maliwan. Mighty Thao Cakkrawat has set two strong soldiers to maintain acid-water and final-fire rites, two layers blocking the path. Your Majesty should halt the army and rest the great forces on left and right. We should plan how to break the asura gates before moving the army on."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the younger brother of the twenty-handed king. The lord halted the great army.

Then Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier, assigned the men to set the victorious pavilion at the forest edge near the mountain foot.

Then noble solar-line Bharata invited his younger brother Shatrughna and ascended the shining pavilion.

Now the tale turns to Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, who enjoyed the heavenly royal city and upheld Maliwan's crown. At night he went to sleep on a shining couch, with palace women and attendants around him like stars encircling the moon in the sky. Heat and unease arose in his mind as if he had been struck by poisoned arrow-light. Near dawn, the king finally drifted into sleep.

He dreamed that a young Sindhava horse, noble and of lofty breed, kept by the demon king in the victorious city, came in with fire burning at the tip of its tail. It ran and circled in confusion until the flame caught the yaksha king's body. It spread and burned the jeweled white umbrella, fierce and strong like final fire. Then two divine youths, riding garudas, flew from the northeast, swooped down, clawed the demon king's head, and carried him away toward the west. All friends and kin had flames burning on their bodies; all the soldiers who served nearby, officers and men, were struck by the fire's poison.

When he recovered and woke from sleep, he was frightened, stunned, and heartsick. Sweat soaked his whole body as if touched by the heat of fire. As soon as the sun opened its light, bright and gleaming, he bathed, put on splendid ornaments, and went out to the audience hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white umbrella, with the kumbhanda ministers bowing all around in crowds. Then he gave royal command to the chief astrologers: "Tonight, near dawn, I fell asleep on my couch and had a dream-omen, strange and deeply distorted." He told the whole dream from beginning to end.

Then the four chief astrologers received the command of the earth-ruling king, joined their hands, and considered it. They knew it was inauspicious and that turmoil and a great enemy would arise. They reported with quick wisdom: "In the dream, final fire burned the tail of a young Sindhava horse kept in the royal realm and spread to the bright white umbrella. This means disaster and danger will arise for Your Majesty, your solar-line kin and friends, and the soldiers, attendants, and servants. They will fall dead, and the whole city will be troubled and burned with distress because of the prince who came to shelter beneath your feet. The two powerful divine youths riding the lordly garudas through the sky mean a troop of brave enemy kings with authority will raise a great army and come killing as far as the royal city."

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, heard the astrologers' prediction, and his whole body was stunned. He thought, "The glorious prince, Thotsaphin the yaksha who ruled Lanka city, must surely have caused disaster." Having thought this, he gave command to a great demon minister: "Hurry out to the foot of Kailasa mountain. Invite the ascetic Phra Parames, strong in vows and meditative knowledge. Tell him I summon him into the city today."

Then Suphinsan, the yaksha minister, received the command of the earth-ruling king, joined his hands in homage, and flew away.

When he arrived, he raised his hands in reverence to the great teacher and reported that the king of the threefold realm invited him into the city.

Then Phra Parames, teacher strong in meditation, heard the great minister. He sprang up, grabbed his body-cloth, tied his matted hair into a knot around his head, snatched up a staff, lost his rosary, and searched in a fluster, with ascetic equipment scattered throughout the hut. Suphinsan called to warn him many times, "Come quickly, holy rishi." Startled, he grabbed a fan and had the asura carry him through the air.

When they reached the palace residence, he came down from the sky in agitation, ascended the jeweled palace, and sat near the kumbhanda king.

Then fashioned Thao Cakkrawat raised his hands to the holy ascetic and told the whole dream from the beginning. "I had the astrologers interpret it; they predict that a great war will arise. You are quick in wisdom. What do you see, bad or good?"

Then the great rishi Phra Parames considered the asura's omen and understood it fully with wisdom. He consulted the dream manuals, and they agreed with the astrologers' words. Examining the royal horoscope, he saw the age struck by the death-point, the ascendant, and the moon. All the great planets had entered enemy houses; even Indra could not escape death. He blessed the kumbhanda and said: "Righteous king, do not burn in heart. This dream-omen predicts a great war. It seems battle will arise, and the hostile force has much strength. Your Majesty is wise and skilled; think carefully and firmly. Use friendship to bind through love, and I think glory and welfare will endure. I too will help the lord of the earth obtain happy ease, using compassion as ornament to quiet the heat of dangers that may come." Having spoken, the holy ascetic selected only the highest spells, the heart-syllables and letter-spells, and consecrated water with divine mantras.

When the thousand repetitions were complete, the ascetic sprinkled and bathed the king. As he did, he gave blessings of welfare and victory: "May every danger and calamity not come near."

When finished, he gave blessing, took leave, descended from the pearl palace, and flew by meditation-power back to the forest hut.

Then radiant Bharata lay sleeping at night in the golden pavilion. He thought through the war that would clear away the yaksha line. When the last watch had passed and the moon turned behind Mount Yugandhara, the sounds of birds, crystal roosters, and cicadas rang sweetly through the mountain. Flowers opened to receive the sun, and the wind carried pollen abroad.

He cleansed himself, bathed, and dressed in shining ornaments. Holding the victorious arrow in his hand, he went out to the front of the pavilion.

With soldiers from all three cities, asuras and monkeys all present, bowing everywhere before him, he was splendid as Maghavan. He gave royal words and consulted with the officers and brave troops: "The gates of the demon city of Maliwan are acid-water and final fire in two layers. Who will volunteer to break the asura gates that block us, reducing them to dust and ash, so I can raise the army and enter?"

Then Phraya Anuchit, the great soldier, bowed his head and reported at once: "This much must not trouble the feet. I, your soldier, ask to destroy the yaksha gates, breaking them by my power today."

Then radiant blessed Bharata heard as if divine water had washed his body in comfort. He spoke sweet words, giving blessing and success: "Go well and with victory. May the hostile forces not withstand you."

Then Phraya Anuchit, skilled in war, joined his fingers, bowed his head, received the blessing, took leave, and went away to transform his body.

He became as large as mighty Brahma, his eyes like bright sunlight, four faces gleaming, eight hands terrible and strong. When this was done, he leapt and displayed power until the ten directions shook and resounded. He flew up level with the sky and went straight to the asura gate.

When he arrived, he saw the demon lord named Makkhawan the yaksha, commanding nine kotis of troops and performing a rite that had become fire blazing like final flame. The asura warriors moved on strict patrol. The monkey lord gnashed his teeth and rushed in to fight the demon troops.

Then the asura warriors saw the arrogant four-faced monkey rushing in to attack. Each shook in anger and roared loudly, swinging weapons in uproar, crowding together to strike the monkey.

They hurled weapons like rain. Some shot bows and arrows; those nearby stabbed with lances, and they fought hand to hand, cutting back and forth.

Then Phraya Anuchit, mighty in power, rushed to receive the battle with authority, killing in the middle of the asura force.

With two feet he kicked; with his mouth he bit; with eight hands he seized the yakshas. By his power he tore legs, broke necks, and left the earth covered with dead and shattered bodies.

Then Makkhawan, brave-hearted chief, was sitting with eyes closed, reciting the ritual Veda. Hearing the shaking sound, he was startled. He opened his eyes and gazed; seeing the great white monkey killing the demon troops to death, he grew angry like final fire. He sprang up and stamped his foot, shouting like thunder. Swinging his mace like smoky flame, the kumbhanda came out in pursuit and battle.

Then brave-hearted Phraya Anuchit received, parried, and met him in combat, leaping in to match the asura's power.

By quick strength he broke through, seized Makkhawan the yaksha, and smashed him down onto the earth, where by his power the demon's life ended.

The flames that had leapt and shone went out and lost all radiance. Then he flew to the asura gate set in the inner layer.

When he arrived, he saw the gate-chief, great soldier named Kalasun, sitting and reciting mighty Vedas, summoning nagas to rise. They lifted hoods and breathed poison as smoke; acid-water roared and poured, crashing loudly. The world thundered, and clouds darkened into blackness. Eighteen kotis of warriors, all holding weapons and strong in fierce power, stood there. The wise monkey lord recited spells and shaped his body by power.

By the power of the radiant mantra, he became the king of birds, the royal garuda. He flew down by power and clawed and seized the nagas in uproar.

Some fled, some died in confusion by the force of the mighty garuda. The acid-water that had poured from them vanished when the nagas' power was gone. Then he became again a monkey, eight-handed, four-faced, and vast. He leapt and sprang swiftly, pursuing the asura gate-chief.

Then Kalasun, yaksha of great effective power, was startled and sprang up at once. Seeing the monkey, he grew angry, snatched out a crystal spear, and swung it, raising it to display might. He called the asura troops: "Seize the monkey and kill him to pieces."

Then the brave soldiers heard the command of their chief and each leapt in to seize the monkey.

Then fierce Hanuman, skilled in war, received and parried them hand to hand in the middle of the asura force. He kicked with his feet and battered with eight hands; heads and bodies were cut off through the forest. Then he leapt by his power to kill the gate-chief of Maliwan.

Then strong and fierce Kalasun swung his spear, turning and standing firm, gnashed his teeth, and rushed to seize Hanuman. Each stabbed and cut in confusion; each was brave, each endured, each stood in combat without thought of life.

Then the son of the Wind, great in power and brave in heart, swung the mighty diamond trident and swiftly seized the asura. He stepped on his knee, bent his head around, and snatched the spear from his hand. With his foot he kicked the asura down and pinned him to the earth. He seized both feet and swung him up, displaying his fierce strength, then hurled him to the edge of Mount Cakkrawan. The demon chief's life ended.

When he had broken both layers of gate, the radiant son of Phra Phai flew through the sky by power and returned to the army pavilion.

He bowed his head at the lotus feet of the younger brother of Lord Phra Narai and reported the whole matter from beginning to end, how he had killed the kumbhandas.

Then solar-line Bharata, knowing that the Maliwan gates had been broken in both layers, rejoiced as if he had gained the golden palace tiers of the king of gods in every sign. He spoke sweetly to the wise monkey lord: "You are worthy to be the greatest soldier of the Avatara, the king. Your power surpasses the world; none under heaven equals you." Having spoken, he put on his victorious war gear, invited fashioned Shatrughna, and moved gracefully to mount the splendid golden chariot.

He moved the army out from the pavilion together with the brave troops. Their shouts thundered and shook the earth as they passed through the gates and along the road.

They hurried the army past mountains, ravines, cliffs, and great forests, crossing channels, streams, fords, and waters. Looking ahead, they saw a mountain peak, high and towering, overhanging the sky, with hollows and cliff-shelters. Patterned stone shone with crafted light, like a great nine-gem jewel. He spoke sweet words, asking Phiphek the yaksha: "What is the known name of the mountain we see there?"

Then Phiphek, of noble disposition, bowed his head and answered the command: "The great mountain straight before the chariot is named Mayura Sila Lai. Its shining light is like the full gleam of peacock feathers. Many kinds of trees grow in ranked tiers, pleasing to the eye with graceful branches. They bear fruit and golden flower-clusters; fragrance spreads over the whole mountain. Springs push through stone and flow down to the fragrant ocean. This bright Peacock Mountain has been the city-pillar of Maliwan from ancient times. Its many fruits in the uplands give strength to the army. May Your Majesty halt the soldiers and set firm camp at the splendid mountain foot, to suppress the name of the asura city and gain victory over the hostile king."

Then noble solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek the asura and halted the soldiers. He ordered the son of the Sun, skilled in powerful war: "Set up a lasting pavilion at the foot of the mountain beside the stream."

Then wise and brave Sukhrip bowed his head, received the words of the Avatara's younger brother, and came out.

He assigned duties among the monkeys and yakshas. The monkeys were to set up the pavilion, side halls for swords, and council halls for the inner officers. The yaksha troops were to make ramparts and moats, gates, forts, and towers great and small, with walls and battlements all around, and inspectors posted to check the work.

Then the asura and monkey warriors, every chief of every station, drove the common soldiers, who ran in a fluster.

Each cleared and leveled his own section, prying, pounding, and flattening rock. Some dug earth and cut wood in uproar, carrying, dragging, and hauling it in competition.

They set it in a wheel army formation, with moats and strong diamond-like ramparts, complete forts, camp-walls, and battle towers, like a royal city.

Then radiant, blessed Bharata, when the camp-setting work was finished, rejoiced and spoke. He invited solar-line Shatrughna to descend from the victorious chariot. Sweeping his hands and moving gracefully, he went to bathe.

The two kings descended to bathe in the pool at the stream-bank. The clear water revealed the gleam of sapphire, ruby, pearl, and cat's-eye; red gems mixed with masses of pearls, lotus-rubies and radiant diamonds, gold sand bright as gold, patterned stones of crystal and onyx, emeralds, garuda-net stone, topaz, coral mixed with red coral, golden stone pleasing to the eye, wish-gems set with coral. Lotus beds opened petals everywhere and lifted stems; pollen fell and floated along the stream, while the wind carried it gently. The lotus-water was sweetly flavored, its scent mingled with pollen. Bees and bhramaras hummed, flying and tasting the flowers. Fish grazed on moss and swam low; some spouted water while floating near the cliffs. Watching with delight, the kings enjoyed the stream and bathing place.

When bathing in the stream was finished, the two splendid younger brothers of the Avatara walked gracefully and ascended the golden victory pavilion.

Then the monkey kings great and small, together with the yaksha and forest-monkey host, all went down to play in the water.

The clear water flowed swiftly in spirals, striking the cliffs with thunder. Monkeys leapt and chased one another in confusion; kumbhandas dived and swam through the stream. Some gathered lotuses, water chestnuts, and turtle-lotus roots, tearing up roots for food. Asuras plucked lotus flowers, and monkeys leapt to snatch them away. On cliff overhangs by the water, yakshas pulled monkeys and teased them. They leapt and played happily, chasing each other noisily in uproar. Monkeys pulled up trailing algae and struck the yakshas in jest; demons broke lotus stems and hit back. The sound of laughter rose merrily. Sukhrip, Hanuman, Ongkhot, and Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bathed at ease in the great stream.

When the playing in the water was finished, the monkey kings and brave warriors, together with the asura demon troops, returned to the victory pavilion.

Then the asura gate-soldiers great and small who had survived and scattered in defeat, hiding in the upland forest, saw the army arrive and camp on Mayura Mountain. More alarmed and frightened than fire, they hurried into the city together.

When they arrived, they told the matter to the four demon ministers: "A white monkey of great power came pursuing and fighting. The soldiers of both gate layers fought him and died beyond counting. Makkhawan and Kalasun were destroyed. Now the great army has arrived. We saw two humans as army-commanders riding royal chariots. Their troops are beyond counting, filling the forest. Their sound is thunderous, as if earth and sky would collapse. Yakshas and monkeys are mixed together, camped firmly at Mayura Mountain."

Then the four demon ministers heard and were doubly alarmed. They went to the vast audience hall.

Each bowed his head in homage to the crown of Maliwan's royal realm and reported that an enemy had come to attack, according to the matter told by the gate-guards.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha learned the news, burning in his breast. The demon king sat silent and thought: "This matter is true, just as I dreamed, and as the astrologers predicted; it seems not false. Being male, if I fear the enemy, the ten directions will mock me." Thinking this, he gave command to the great chief ministers: "Hurry to muster all forces and station them around the city."

Then the four demon ministers, skilled in war, received the command of the mighty king, joined hands, and hurried out.

They mustered the asura demon host, choosing only brave and bold men, fully equipped with weapons to guard the royal city on every side. Forts, camp-walls, battlements, and battle towers had great guns ranged at every station. The reserve was selected from excellent men, spaced ten sen apart. The firm divisions were all brave men, stationed at every gate great and small. The center guard stood in the middle of the victorious city, ready to cut through wherever pressure became heavy.

Then the subjects and people throughout the realm learned the matter and shared their grief: "This time Maliwan will be shattered because Painasuriyawong brought Lord Death to kill us. The grandson of Thao Atchaban, skilled in perfected arrows and fierce power, marched to war in Lanka and killed yakshas beyond counting. Thao Thotsakan came out to fight, and many kin and friends died. Now he has come to Maliwan, and both gate layers have broken in defeat. We will all die." Speaking, they brushed tears away.

Then noble solar-line Bharata lay on his couch in the splendid golden pavilion. The sky was crowded with stars, the moon moved shining, cool dew dropped on the earth, and the wind blew gently, carrying the fragrant scent of pollen through the air. Crystal roosters, cuckoos, and birds sounded sweetly, waking and flying to seek one another. Golden light spread over the sky, radiant and bright. At the loud sound of music, the righteous king woke from sleep.

He rinsed his mouth, washed his face, put on the ornaments of a world-ruling king, held the mighty arrow in his hand, and came out to the shining pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the throne-seat, beautiful as Thao Kosi. The monkey soldiers all joined hands and bowed everywhere. He gave command, consulting soldiers great and small: "Shall we raise the great army and surround the asura's victorious city, or send an envoy carrying a letter to speak to the yaksha king according to ancient custom? What should we do?"

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, bowed his head, offered joined hands, and reported with quick wisdom: "If we raise the army to surround the yaksha city and take it by power, I think it can be done. But Your Majesty's glory would not become known through the earth. Please appoint a brave and wise officer as envoy to carry the command and speak to the kumbhanda. If he remains stubborn and does not submit, then raise the army to surround the realm. What is there in Maliwan city to fear from the hands of monkeys?"

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the son of the Sun, and it matched the king's heart. He gave command: "You are the elder. Which soldier do you judge fit to go as envoy?"

Then the mighty son of the Sun bowed his head and answered the command: "For speaking with the yaksha lord, I see only Nilanon the viceroy, proud and sharp in power, quick and wise. I think he will not lose his footing."

Then radiant, blessed Bharata heard and rejoiced. He gave royal command, ordering the monkey scribe: "Compose a royal letter and send it to wise Nilanon, so he may go speak and make the matter known in Maliwan city."

Then diligent Satphali received the command, paid homage, and they helped compose the royal letter.

When it was finished, they inscribed it on a golden palm-leaf, placed it in a golden letter-box, and gave it to mighty Nilanon according to the command of Phra Chakri's younger brother.

Now solar-line Bharata, younger brother of the fashioned arm-line lord, whose power is like the sun, has brought the army and soldiers here. He has come and set his camp at splendid Mayura Mountain. He has not struck in violent assault because he has much mercy for you. Therefore he sent me to carry a letter and speak properly, not in violence. Bow your head quickly, yaksha lord, and listen to the royal letter."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha came out among hundreds of thousands of soldiers before the window-throne. He saw the monkey floating in the air, showing power like a great lion. Angry as burning coals, he said: "Hey, listen, forest monkey. You are an animal by birth. Where are your homeland and city? What name do you have, that you are an envoy carrying a letter? Why do you not bow to me, crown of the yaksha realm? You act proud, bold, and arrogant, crying down from the sky. Properly, you should bow your head in homage and prostrate at my two feet first. According to the custom of city envoys, monkey, then read the letter."

Then Phraya Nilanon, the great soldier, saw Cakkrawat standing stubborn in pride and arrogance, and cried: "Hey, yaksha lord! I, the bearer of the royal letter, am named victorious Phraya Nilanon, soldier of four-armed Phra Narai, viceroy of Chomphu city, glorious in power like a royal lion. My fame and power have spread; I have never bent to flatter or bow to anyone. You speak, raising yourself. Are you not afraid of death? Bow your head and listen to the king's letter." Having spoken, he read it at once.

"Royal letter of the world-ruling line, crown of kings through the four continents, younger brother of Phra Narai, lord of the threefold realm, named graceful Bharata, who came in the train from the Ocean of Milk, whose fierce power surpasses the three worlds, to four-faced Thao Cakkrawat, crown of Maliwan. You have done wrong, joining thought with a deluded child. You seized righteous Phiphek and bound him in prison, then set Painasuriyawong over the royal realm of Lanka, without fearing the feet of the Avatara, lord of the three worlds. Now the lord commanded me, his younger brother, to raise the army and soldiers and come to kill the asura's life. But I have great mercy and hope to spare the yaksha's life. Therefore I send this to speak properly and have not thought to fight. If you know your fault and that you did wrong, abandon the crooked deluded path and swear truth before the arrow of the righteous king. Then, kumbhanda, your life will be spared."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the letter and boiled in spirit, angry as final fire. He cried: "Hey, ugly one! I and Thotsakan the yaksha were beloved friends sharing life. Phiphek was like my younger brother. I, the elder, summoned him, but he arrogantly came out to fight. When I captured him, I pitied him instead of killing him and kept him in torture and confinement, because he was unrighteous and ugly, not knowing his elder brother's grace. He aimed to destroy life, then joined with the enemy, telling stratagems and tricks of war so the yaksha line could be cleared away, until my friend lost his life. All this was because of him. Rama called it merit and gave him wealth and sovereignty, handing them to that Phiphek. That was unjust and improper. Therefore I set Painasuriyawong over the royal city of Lanka to continue the supreme Brahma-line. How is that wrong by ancient rule? Your lord seized only Lanka; the royal city of Maliwan is not the same. Though his army be dense beyond seas, it will be destroyed by asura hands."

Then victorious Nilanon heard Thao Cakkrawat's words, all stubborn talk. He cried: "Hey, yaksha lord! The discus-bearing king stands in the ten royal virtues as pillar of the world and earth. If anyone does wrong, then he destroys that life. Thao Thotsakan, blind and wicked, harmed ascetics and gods and then stole the queen of Phra Chakri, keeping her in the kumbhanda garden because of deluded desire and partiality. Phiphek saw the wrong and warned him through gratitude to his elder brother, but Thotsakan grew angry and drove him from the city. Then he became Phra Chakri's servant. When the war was finished, the lord graciously appointed him to rule the city according to the solar-line yaksha order. Since Phiphek did not join the asura's wrong, how is this at fault? Do not be bold and boastful, speaking gross arrogance and saying your city is better than great Lanka. I think you are not much before the monkey hand."
