This is the ninety-third สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Nilanon's embassy to Cakkrawat, Nilanon darkening the city with smoke and breaking the palace crest, Cakkrawat sending his son Suriya Phop with the Mekhaphat spear, Shatrughna facing Suriya Phop in battle, Nilaphat killing Trikan, Suriya Phop using Mekhasun's mountain illusion and the consecrated spear, Shatrughna being struck down, and Bharata coming by moonlight to lament over his fallen brother.

Suriya Phop Wounds Shatrughna

Then Thao Cakkrawat, skilled in war, heard and grew angry like burning coals. He swung his bow and ground his teeth. He sprang up from the throne-seat, stamping his foot until the ground shook. Leaning out the shining crystal window, the kumbhanda cried back: "Do not praise him beyond his face. Do you think I do not know? This Rama is a forest ascetic; he had no soldiers or servants. Sukhrip and Pali quarreled, and your unrighteous lord killed the elder, seized his heavenly city, and only then gained monkeys for Lanka. That Phiphek has no power; he wanted his elder brother's wealth, fled out, and told tricks and deceit so Thotsakan would be killed. As for Thao Satthasun, he was firm in truth and righteousness, troubling no one on earth. Since that yaksha king was truthful, why did he cut off his life? This is contrary to Narai's avatar nature. If he attacks, I do not fear him."

Then mighty Nilaphat heard the kumbhanda's words, clapped his hands in mockery, and answered: "Hey, hey, Cakkrawat the asura, do not speak improper words. The lord went forth as a forest ascetic, keeping the work of a yogi to increase his perfection and power. Pali broke his sworn truth, so the lord destroyed him and ended his life. As for Thao Satthasun, if he had been firm in truth as you say, why would he have joined wicked Thotsakan and raised an army to fight? Were that yaksha king and Pali without fault? Did the lord kill them for nothing? You are clever at speaking, ugly wretch. If you do not come out to attend at his feet, your four heads will be cut off as if struck by a discus, and the whole yaksha lineage will end by the power of the younger brother."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard, anger crowded his breast, and he stamped his foot and cried: "Hah, look at that animal, speaking gross arrogance. I, mighty in power, am worshiped by the three worlds in every quarter. It is not fitting for me to bow in homage to corrupt humans. It would be like a small firefly competing in power with the fierce sun. You have only been preserved because you carry a letter; otherwise I would destroy you and end your life. Tomorrow I will march out to fight. Hurry and tell them; do not delay."

Then brave-hearted Nilaphat, mighty in power, grew angry as if fire burned the sky. Clapping his hands and pointing at the yaksha's face, he answered: "Hey, listen, ugly one. You do not know Phra Kal. You are proud and intend to go fight the younger brother of the Avatara, lord of the earth. Even I, who came as envoy, could kill you and end your life. Only fearing to exceed the royal command restrains me; otherwise I would slay you." Having spoken, he drew his sword and brandished it, displaying power in uproar. It became flame, flaring bright through the upper sky, with smoke spreading darkness over the great city.

Then men and women of the city, great and small, saw thick darkness like fire-smoke, and felt heat as if their bodies would burn. Startled, pale, without spirit, they shook and cried in noisy fear, thinking a fire had started. They gathered possessions and ran in confusion. Each carried children and grandchildren, stumbling, crawling, falling face-down and on their backs. Some led fathers-in-law and mothers-in-law, afraid they would die in the fire. The heavenly asura maidens lost all composure and scattered running through the demon king's palace.

Then wise and brave Nilanon displayed power like final fire, as if he would burn the yaksha king's palace. Then he flew upward by swift sacred power, seized the Brahma-face crest with both hands, and wrenched off the top of the jeweled palace.

It crashed down to the throne, shattered, with a sound like thunder. He swung it mockingly at the asura, then flew back to the shining pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of radiant solar-line Bharata. He reported the asura's affair and the fierce arrogant words he had spoken: "Your servant wanted to kill him, but feared exceeding the royal command. Therefore I broke off the demon lord's palace crest and brought it to the mighty sky-ruling lord."

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak, Phra Chakkrit, heard and rejoiced because it matched his thought. By decree he praised the monkey: "It is fitting that you are a soldier of the bow-bearing Avatara, usable as eyes and hands." Having spoken, he went into the pavilion.

Then, on Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha's side, after the monkey had acted arrogantly, broken the top of the great victory palace, and flown back through the sky, the demon king grew angry as burning fire. "Chih, that vile monkey has done this to me. It is shameful and disgraceful before all classes of gods. I will repay it in full. What can happen to him? My beloved son Suriya Phop is sharp and brave in war. He bears the mighty Mekhaphat spear, a divine weapon fit for his hand. I will make him commander to go into battle first and test their strength. If the fight is heavy, I myself will go fight and kill the humans and monkeys to pieces."

Having thought this, he gave an edict and ordered brave-hearted Ritthichak: "Go find Prince Suriya Phop and bring him to the audience hall."

Then diligent minister Ritthichak received the kumbhanda king's command, paid homage, and hurried away.

When he came to the royal son, he bowed his head in reverence, joined his hands, and reported the royal command.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha learned that his holy father had summoned him to attend the lotus feet. He bathed and cleansed himself in ease, put on shining ornaments, descended from the bright palace, and hurried to the audience hall.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of his royal father, the fashioned king, sat before all the ministers, and the kumbhanda waited to hear the command.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his son come up. The sky-ruling lord gave royal order: "Now human enemies sent a monkey as envoy carrying a letter. He spoke base and gross words, then broke the top of my victory palace. Shame and anger are beyond thought. I will clear away his life. You must raise the great army, go out, fight, and kill them. Destroy them completely by your fierce power, skilled in war. If the fighting is too heavy for your hands, your father will go out to battle."

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha heard and grew angry as fire. He joined his hands and answered: "A war of this scale is not heavy. It is within your beloved son's power to break it. I ask to serve by going to fight, so there will be no displeasure beneath your feet."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard his son report and rejoiced because it matched his thought. He stroked the royal son's face and back and gave command: "Since you will go subdue the enemies, may your power shine like the sun. Kill and destroy the enemy kings, let them be defeated and ruined in the battle's midst. Your fame will spread and remain over earth through the ages."

Then mighty Suriya Phop bowed his head in reverence, received the blessing with joy, touched his holy father's feet to his head, took leave in homage, and returned to the asura palace.

When he arrived, he lowered himself onto the seat and ordered the yaksha ministers: "Quickly muster the fourfold army. I will go fight against the enemy host."

Then the great demon ministers received the high royal son's command, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

They mustered a marching army in four brave divisions. Horse lords rode horses, holding lances raised in graceful display. Chariot lords mounted war-chariots, holding bows and eagerly testing strings. Elephant lords drove tusked elephants, holding patterned gold hooks. Commanders arranged the battle troops, fierce in power, hard and firm, wearing armor, coats, and gold-patterned helmets, every hand filled with weapons. Each swung his weapon and displayed courage, leaping like royal lions. Crowded in the middle of the city, they stood in layers, waiting for the asura prince.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha, when the auspicious hour came near, came to bathe.

He entered to cleanse and bathe in fragrant water scented with pollen. His lower cloth was set with ruby gems; his robe bore the victory-rice-banner pattern and tangled leaf-scrolls. His hanging panel was splendid, with coiled stems; side panel was set with emerald and ruby. His upper garment was green with vine designs, and crystal armor with chased patterns covered him. Direction-plates, a coral-centered breast ornament, three battle chains, pendant belts bright with gems, bracelets, and dragon-shaped armlets adorned him. He wore jeweled rings and a crested crown, diamond earrings and bright ear ornaments. Holding the crystal Mekhaphat spear, he swept his hand and mounted the royal chariot.

O war-chariot, strange and splendid: its curved yoke was graceful and raised; crystal spokes joined the rim, and the hubs gleamed bright with jewels. Images encircled the throne with rows of crestwork; diamond panels and upturned lotus ornaments hung with floral crests. The pavilion seemed like a floating palace, with four faces and delicate tiers. Royal lions were harnessed to it; the charioteer drove skillfully as if turning a discus. High insignia screened the light of the sun. Pipes, gongs, and drums sounded together. Horses, chariots, elephants, and demons roared in thunder. Usayok waved the golden flag, and every troop hurried onward.

When he came near Mayura Mountain, he halted the great army and set it firmly in formation on the lasting victory-ground.

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, when dawn had cleared the sun's light, woke from the splendid bed. He invited graceful Shatrughna, his noble younger brother, to cleanse and bathe. They put on great shining ornaments, beautiful, majestic, and graceful in body, like their elder brother the four-armed lord. Taking the perfected mighty arrow, he went to the front of the victory pavilion.

He lowered himself onto the splendid seat, with soldiers great and small around him. Hearing a mighty sound, shouting loudly in uproar, he asked the lord of Lanka city: "Listen, yaksha king. The army coming out with dust filling sky and earth, is it of the solar-line kin in Maliwan's royal city, or has Cakkrawat, lord of demons, raised it to attack?"

Then Phiphek, of noble disposition, received the mighty king's command and examined the matter by the three-eyed time. Counting from Sunday to Tuesday and checking breath by the wind of the nostrils, he knew it clearly by wisdom, as if with divine sight. He bowed his head and reported to the fashioned younger brother of Lord Phra Narai: "At this time Mars presses the moon. The hard army coming to fight is the son of Cakkrawat the asura, named Suriya Phop, skilled in war. He bears the Mekhaphat spear in his hand; its power in battle surpasses the earth. Let victorious Shatrughna command the splendid monkey warriors and march out to fight that wicked asura."

Then noble solar-line Bharata heard wise Phiphek and spoke graciously: "Listen, graceful Shatrughna, my beloved younger brother, skilled in war. Raise the monkey army and go out to meet the demon lord. If you see that he has great strength, wait and do not yet break in violently; I myself will raise the army and destroy him until his life ends."

Then radiant blessed Shatrughna heard and rejoiced. He joined his hands and answered the command: "A war of this scale is not heavy; it is within your beloved younger brother's power. Let my elder brother not burn in heart. I will not cause displeasure beneath the lotus feet."

Then Bharata, whose power surpassed the bright sun, heard his victorious younger brother. The sky-ruling lord ordered the son of the Sun: "Arrange the best monkey kings, brave and skilled in war, so that my powerful younger brother may go fight the asura kumbhanda."

Then diligent Phraya Sukhrip received the command of the divine-line king, paid homage, and went out.

He mustered mighty Nilaphat to command the vanguard monkey troops. The firm division was led by mighty Nilek, with soldiers chosen for skill in war. Nilanon commanded the flanking guard, with officers and men dense as seas. The royal division, led by the younger brother of the Garuda-borne lord, was the crown of the army. Phiphek, Chomphuphan, Ongkhot, and Hanuman flanked the jeweled chariot. Good Chomphuwaraj, the monkey adjutant, directed commands. Surasen, powerful in war, served as reserve commander over brave soldiers. The victorious sons of Intharachit commanded the demon troops of Lanka, serving as rear guard, arranged along the forest line. Yakshas and monkeys swung weapons flashing like lightning in the sky.

Then solar-line Shatrughna, bearer of the bow, took leave of his powerful elder brother and went to bathe in flowing water.

They opened the ruby-crystal pipes, and sweet fragrant water flowed. He bathed in perfume blended with flower pollen. His lower cloth had winding leaf-stem borders; his purple brocade robe bore gold-vine patterns and seven-headed naga forms. His hanging panel was set with diamonds; his side panel had rows of cut crystal. He wore an upper garment with narrow sleeves and emerald armor shining bright. Direction-plates and carved breast ornament, seven diamond chains, armlets, and naga-shaped bracelets adorned him. He wore petal-mounted rings, a great crown with flowers at the side, radiant crystal earrings and ear ornaments. Beautiful in body and bearing like a god, he put on his sword, took up his bow, and walked with graceful steps to mount the victorious chariot.

O royal chariot: axle, spokes, hubs, and rims were splendid; its raised curves were beautiful in descending tiers, with ground crystal panels and a patterned throne. Its floor was clear diamond; jeweled crestwork and upturned lotus pavilion panels gleamed. Four faces had gold posts and makara patterns, dreamlike and beautiful as a moon-palace. Four Sindhava horses were harnessed, leaping and running as if a discus turned. The charioteer flourished a lance and stood firm; rows of umbrellas and victory flags followed in layers. High insignia shaded the sunlight; golden yak-tail fans shone bright. The sound of gongs, drums, pipes, and chanai shook the forest. Every troop of soldiers, bold and excited, shouted in uproar. Dust blew and covered the upper sky as they drove and hurried against one another.

When they reached the battlefield, he halted the great army and set it in the mighty lion formation, steady, watching the asura's strength.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha stood in his chariot amid the army. He saw the monkey host advancing with a human as supreme commander, riding a great victorious chariot, graceful in all his body, beautiful in face and form, holding the perfected fierce arrow in his hand, lovely as a divine youth in heaven. He had the shining jeweled chariot move through the troops and come forward.

He cried: "Hey, little human, not worth comparing to my fingertip. What is your name, that you dare be arrogant in heart and bring asuras and monkeys to insult the solar-line yaksha? Bearing divine weapons as I do, you will all lose your lives."

Then radiant solar-line Shatrughna heard the asura's words and answered by command: "My name is Shatrughna. My fierce power has no equal. I am the heart-sharing younger brother of the Avatara, lord of the three worlds. He sent me and my elder brother Bharata to raise the brave army and subdue Cakkrawat, lord of demons, who is base and a thorn in the earth. What is your name, yaksha lord? You do not know the royal lion and come boasting of power like a gnat flying into sky-fire."

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha heard, clapped his hands, and cried: "Hey, human as small as a spider-thread, why do you speak arrogantly, boasting that no one can withstand you? I, famed in great power, am the eldest son of the yaksha king, named Suriya Phop. My force surpasses all three worlds. You are still too tender to come fiercely fighting. You are fit only to be crushed in my hand by the bright Mekhaphat spear. Hurry and take your army to tell your brother at the pavilion to move his brave troops back to their city. If you remain, you will lose your life, together with all monkey servants."

Then solar-line Shatrughna, bearer of the bow, heard the son of the eight-handed king. The lord cried back: "Hey, Suriya Phop the yaksha, what are you saying? Whom do you threaten with words alone? Who will fear your power? Do not speak only of yourself, ugly wretch. Even four-faced Thao Cakkrawat the asura, your father and lord of demons, together with the whole kumbhanda line, gross, unrighteous, and arrogant, I will kill until life is ended, according to the command of Phra Chakri."

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha heard and grew angry as fire. The asura gnashed his teeth, stamped his foot, and roared like thunder: "Hey, hey, human, you have insulted me. I will cut you apart so even the crow's throat will not ache." Having spoken, he gave command to the vanguard officers: "Hurry in, fight everywhere, and kill the human and monkey host."

Then the demon ministers, skilled in war, received the mighty lord's command and drove the troops into the attack.

Then the host of asura yakshas each displayed power and rushed in, pursuing the monkey soldiers in confusion.

They shot, thrust, stabbed, and cut in chaos, hurling weapons great and small. The sound thundered and shook the forest; each fled and chased back and forth.

Then the monkey vanguard received the asuras' hands and fought them, breaking in bravely without fearing death. They ran and pressed in, seizing one another in confusion. Both sides fell face-down and on their backs. Weapons flashed like fire. Each aimed fiercely to stab and cut. Monkeys and yakshas lay dead everywhere. The shouting shook the world. The monkeys pursued and pressed forward, and the kumbhandas broke and scattered.

Then Trikan, great vanguard chief, saw the whole victorious army breaking in defeat. He swung his club and chased them in attack.

He struck left and right in confusion by the fierce power of the yaksha. Monkeys fell dead in disorder, fled, and drew back.

Then brave-hearted Nilaphat saw Trikan the asura pursuing and killing the monkeys. Angered, he drew his trident and brandished it, displaying power like a royal lion. He leapt by battle-power and rushed in to fight the kumbhanda.

They received each other in tangled combat. Each endured, held firm, struck, parried, and cut, turning back and forth in confusion.

Then Trikan, yaksha of effective power, fought close without thought of life, and the asura rushed in to attack.

He struck left and right in uproar. Neither gave ground or fled. They wheeled and shifted positions, fighting back and forth without lowering the pace.

Then mighty Nilaphat pressed forward, grappled and struck face to face, gnashed his teeth, and chased the attack.

With foot-kicks, hand-slaps, and bites, he seized and bound him by brave strength, hurled him down onto the earth, and the demon chief's life ended.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha saw that Trikan the asura had been killed by the monkey. He grew furious like final fire, gnashed his teeth, and stamped on the chariot. Swinging his mighty victorious bow, he drove into the monkey soldiers.

He struck left and right in confusion by youthful strength and skill in war. Monkey troops died in his hands by the asura's power.

Then radiant blessed Shatrughna saw his troops falling dead in disorder and drove the jeweled chariot into battle.

The curves of chariot met chariot, and the rims rang loudly until the earth shook. He held the mighty arrow in his hand, set it to the string, and shot by power.

Its sound was like thunder. It went straight to the royal chariot; the royal lion and charioteer died, and the soldiers died in ruin.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha fell to the earth when his chariot broke. The asura reflected: "This human has brave power and is skilled in perfected arrows. The monkey soldiers also have power. To clear away his life will be difficult. I must destroy him with the divine weapon, the great Mekhaphat spear. Its power is mighty; I think victory over him will come." Thinking this, he spoke royal command to a diligent minister: "I will recite Vedas and austerity rites, consecrating the crystal spear of power so it has force like final fire-poison, blazing with victorious might. You must shape your body by asura power into a great mountain-ring, seven layers encircling the yaksha soldiers, so the enemy cannot come in until my work is finished."

Then brave-hearted Mekhasun, great in power, bowed his head, received the words, and recited spells to transform his body.

At once he changed into a mountain as great as Mount Cakkrawan, seven layers surrounding the soldiers by the asura's powerful authority.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha sat in the middle of the army at the forest edge. He lifted the spear in joined hands above his head, revered the grace of Brahma, closed his eyes, fixed the kumbhanda mind, and recited mighty Vedas.

Then, on Shatrughna's side, the younger brother set his aim to clear away the life of Suriya Phop the asura. Looking out, he could not see his body. The whole yaksha army had vanished from sight, and the field and forest had become a mountain range. He gave royal command, asking the chief astrologer: "I was just now fighting that wicked asura; I saw him clearly with the soldiers. Now he has disappeared before my eyes, together with the asura troops. The whole sound of the warriors is silent. I see only splendid mountain ramparts in many layers blocking the way. What has the asura done?"

Then Phiphek, of noble disposition, heard and understood clearly in his heart. Bowing, he answered the command: "Suriya Phop the kumbhanda is reciting Vedas and spells to consecrate the mighty Mekhaphat spear, making it brave as final fire. He has used powerful Mekhasun to transform the yaksha body into a range of mountain slopes, surrounding all the troops. If he completes one thousand repetitions by the manual, even Indra and Brahma cannot oppose him. Your Majesty should shoot the victorious arrow to destroy the austerity rite."

Then solar-line Shatrughna heard Phiphek the kumbhanda. The righteous king took up his arrow in worship, thought on the grace of his royal father and his great elder brother, set it to the string, drew with power, and shot.

The sound shook and thundered through the air. Demons died everywhere beyond counting; Mekhasun too was destroyed, and the mountain vanished at once.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha heard repeated thunder in uproar. The asura opened his eyes and looked. Seeing Mekhasun's body cut apart and demon troops dead through the forest, he grew angry as if fire burned the sky. The asura sprang up and stood firm, stamped his foot and roared until the sound shook and rolled, swung Mekhaphat like final fire, gnashed his teeth, and fixed his aim to fight.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha saw Suriya Phop display power and reported to the younger brother of the lord of the three worlds: "Now the son of Thao Cakkrawat is holding the great Mekhaphat spear and will enter battle. Do not trust him; watch the asura carefully."

Then the son of the four-faced yaksha leapt and sprang forward, seized the curve of the great victorious chariot like Rahu the asura suddenly seizing the haloed moon, struck left and right without stopping, and leapt up onto the chariot by power.

Then radiant blessed Shatrughna received, parried, and fought back. The asura fell from the chariot. The lord swung his arrow-weapon in hand, bold and rushing in pursuit, beautiful as Indra, and seized the many-colored kumbhanda.

Then the son of fashioned Thao Cakkrawat blocked with his hands and parried in battle, fighting close and tight. The two seized each other in tangled combat, each brave, each strong, each displaying power, each fixed on killing without lowering his hands.

Then solar-line Shatrughna, bearer of the bow, swung his weapon and sprang into battle. The king seized him by power. With his left foot he stepped on the yaksha's right knee; with his hand he snatched away the spear. He turned and shifted position, struck the asura until he staggered, then drew the perfected arrow Phlai Wat, whose power has no equal in the three worlds. Setting it to the string, he aimed to clear away life, drew, and shot by power.

The sound thundered across the battlefield. It struck Suriya Phop the yaksha, piercing through his whole body. The soldiers died in ruin.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha, struck by the arrow, hurt in every limb as if life would end. Struggling to hold his body, the asura joined his fingers in homage, thought on the grace of his victorious father, fixed his mind, and recited radiant Vedas.

When three recitations were complete, he stroked downward. The pain in his whole body vanished; no wound remained on him. Angry as fire scattered through the sky, he seized the Mekhaphat spear, swung it with brave fierce strength, aimed at Shatrughna, the younger brother, and hurled it straight.

It blazed like the sun. Its sound thundered and shook. It struck great-powered Shatrughna in the chest, and he fell at once on the battlefield.

Then the splendid monkey kings and officers saw the younger brother of holy Phra Chakri struck by the kumbhanda's spear and fallen on the earth. They were all alarmed and lost spirit. Hanuman, Ongkhot, and Phiphek supported the lord together. Asuraphat of fierce power and the eighteen crown warriors, eyes red as fire in anger, rushed in to destroy the asura soldiers. Horses, chariots, and elephants died by splendid monkey hands. Nilaphat the powerful entered battle with Suriya Phop. The two seized each other in tangled combat, enduring stubbornly without retreat, each brave and skilled in war, until dusk and the sun's light ended.

Then the son of Cakkrawat the yaksha, who had fought alone from morning, became hungry, breathless, and worn. As he fought, the asura reflected: "I have already cleared away the human's life. Why should I keep fighting with that ugly forest monkey? If I win, who will call it good? If I lose advantage, my honor is lost." Thinking this, he ordered the yaksha army to move, shouting fiercely as they entered the city.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of his royal yaksha father and reported everything from the beginning, how he had killed and gained victory over the enemy.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard his beloved son and rejoiced, the asura delighted and glad. His four mouths laughed aloud, his eight hands clapped until the sound shook, and he embraced his royal son. "You are the heart of your father, the blessed crown of Maliwan who will continue the lineage in days to come. The enemy kings who came to insult us will be shattered. You have labored greatly in war. Beloved son, go bathe, eat in ease, and rest in the splendid demon palace."

Then Suriya Phop, skilled in war, bowed down at his father's feet and walked to the shining palace.

When he arrived, he entered the radiant crystal chamber and mounted the jeweled couch amid the palace women.

Then the palace women great and small lay attending everywhere, all beautiful and shining in form, young, graceful, increasing love, their faces bright as heavenly apsarases. They came to wave fans, massage, and carry out their stations together. The women of pleasure sang in offering, their voices flowing, sweet, and slow, lamenting and ornamenting in sweet words, tuneful all at once. Clappers, small cymbals, ramana drums, and other instruments marked the rhythm, plucked and bowed, serving and delighting the asura in the jeweled palace.

Then the son of Cakkrawat the yaksha heard the voices of the lovely women. Love delighted his heart. He reclined on the bed in pleasure, teasing and joking with the palace women, and slept through the night.

Then Nilaphat, the splendid monkey, with the eighteen crown warriors and mighty Asuraphat, when they saw the son of the eight-handed king return into the yaksha city, hurried back to the beautiful younger brother.

They saw him lying still, not moving at all, and thought his life had ended. Each grieved and lamented, and the uproar of voices was terrible.

Then Phiphek, solar-line yaksha, saw the monkey kings grieving and spoke to stop them: "The younger brother Shatrughna has not yet reached the end of life. Wise Nilarat, hurry to report the matter clearly."

Then brave-hearted Nilarat bowed his fingers, received the demon lord's words, and hurried in distress to the pavilion.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported to the solar-line king, younger brother of Lord Phra Narai: "Now the splendid younger brother went to kill the enemy and lost advantage. The Mekhaphat spear of Cakkrawat's yaksha son struck him, fixed in his body, and he fell to the ground."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the monkey's words. The king was alarmed as if powerful Phra Kal had plucked away his life. In great suffering, distress, and longing, the lord descended from the pavilion. He had mighty Nilarat lead the way ahead; Sukhrip and the army followed him through the night.

They took a crooked forest shortcut by the bright moonlight, shining over the earth. The king glanced aside and saw his younger brother faint with the spear in him, amid the soldiers great and small, with Phiphek and Hanuman holding him. He ran in with love.

He examined the young lord, suffering as if his own breast were broken. With both hands he grasped the yaksha spear and tried to support and pull it with all his body's strength. But Mekhaphat, the mighty weapon, would not shift or come loose from its place. It remained fixed in the chest by power. The king sank further in grief. He sat down, lifted his beloved younger brother's head into his lap, and sighed deeply. Tears filled the lord of the earth's eyes; he sobbed and lamented.

"O, alas, beloved younger brother, who shares my life and body. We have shared happiness and sorrow from youth, like a shadow clinging always to the body. This time the Avatara gave royal command and sent us to subdue the kumbhandas, who are thorns in the earth. He hoped to give us honor and glory known through the sky and zodiac, according to the line of world-ruling kings, because we came from Vaikuntha. You are mighty in rank, famed through the ten directions; yet in war you did not guard your body and were struck by the spear of a base asura. If this becomes known in Ayutthaya's royal city, the three lovely royal mothers will be angry as final fire. Phra Hari's discus-bearing line and Lord Lak will blame me, saying I let only my younger brother go fight because I feared my own life would end. O my breast, it is shameful before the three worlds in every quarter. They will scorn and slander me, saying I was defeated by an unrighteous asura. Why remain as weight on the earth? I will fight and die." Lamenting in grief, the righteous king embraced his brother and fainted.

Then Phiphek, Hanuman the great soldier, and the eighteen crown warriors of great power saw the mighty lord of the earth embrace his younger brother and lie still without moving. They were all alarmed and confused. Some entered to massage and press his feet; some wept, tears flooding, in sorrow.
