It follows Bharata recovering from grief over Shatrughna, Nilaphat gathering the red sandalwood, sacred bull dung, and grinding stones needed for Phiphek's cure, Shatrughna being revived from the Mekhaphat spear wound, Cakkrawat sending Suriya Phop back to battle, Bharata killing Suriya Phop with the Brahmastra, Cakkrawat lamenting his son, and Banlai Chak mustering the next army at Maliwan.

Suriya Phop Is Killed and Banlai Chak Marches

Then solar-line Bharata, radiant in glory, revived and woke to full awareness. The king sat rigid, stunned in body. Looking at his beautiful younger brother, his heart trembled and failed. He was full of suffering, grief, and loss, and Narai's younger brother glanced aside. Seeing Thao Thotsakhiriwong, he asked the yaksha: "I sent you with my younger brother, thinking you would be like his eyes and heart. You know the weight and measure of war. Why could you not warn my brother? You abandoned him until his life was almost lost. What do you think of this, demon lord?"

Then Phiphek, wise and brave, bowed his head and answered the command: "When the younger brother was fighting against the enemy, I warned him many times to beware the yaksha's Mekhaphat spear. But the mighty younger brother was brave in battle and did not fear the asura's power. This spear was given by omniscient Phra Sayamphu himself to the yaksha. To counter the power of this divine weapon there are medicines kept for that purpose: red sandalwood, and dung from the noble bull that is Phra Isuan's seat. The grinding stone is in the Brahma realm, and its ball is in the naga world. If mighty monkeys bring them and they are compounded, ground, and applied, the younger brother will survive."

Then solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek the asura and gave royal command: "Nilaphat, hurry quickly to the royal city of Ayutthaya. Ask the Avatara for red sandalwood and report the matter at his feet. Then take dung from the lord's bull at the cave of Mount Inthakan, and the stone ball for grinding medicine; return in time tonight."

Then victorious Nilaphat received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and the monkey lord flew into the sky.

When he reached Ayutthaya's city, he bowed his head and reported to the bow-bearing lord: "The mighty younger brothers marched to Lanka, seized Thotsaphin the asura and Waranisun the yaksha, killed them until their lives ended, then withdrew the great army and went to the city of Maliwan. They destroyed the two layers of gates and set the victory pavilion near Mayura Mountain. Powerful Shatrughna fought Suriya Phop the yaksha, son of the lord of Maliwan city. The asura hurled his spear; it struck the younger brother, and he fell on the battlefield. Thao Thotsakhiriwong the asura says there is a medicine made for this. Bharata has sent me to attend the crest-jewel of Ayutthaya and ask for fine red sandalwood, to return with it tonight, compounded with dung from the blessed bull, which is the seat of splendid Phra Isuan, so the younger lord may be cured and come back to life."

Then Phra Kritsanurak, lord and protector, heard the mighty child of Phra Kal. The sky-ruling lord was shocked and alarmed. He picked up pure red sandalwood kept for countering weapons, handed it over, and said: "Monkey lord, hurry quickly. Cure our younger brother at once."

Then the victorious child of Phra Kal received the sandalwood, raised joined hands in homage, and flew to Mount Inthakan.

When he arrived, he reported the matter to the brave noble bull: "Now the Avatara's younger brother has gone to subdue demons at Maliwan city. The asura's Mekhaphat spear struck him, and his life is nearly gone. I ask for your dung to mix with the sandalwood heartwood and cure the younger brother." Speaking so, he gathered the cow-dung. Once he had it, he left the cave, sprang upward through the clouds, and by his power went to the Brahma realm.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of splendid Phra Phrom and fully reported every detail according to the command of Phra Chakri's younger brother: "Now a medicine must be compounded. I ask for the mighty grinding stone to grind the medicine that will counter the demon spear's poison. May the lord above my head have mercy."

Then supreme Phra Phrom heard the wise monkey and immediately picked up the stone and handed it to him.

Then victorious Nilaphat bowed low, received it with joy, and the monkey lord hurried swiftly away.

Standing above the earth's surface, the thoughtful monkey displayed his terrible power and pierced down into the underworld realm.

When he arrived, he spoke to the brave naga king: "The blessed Avatara, sky-ruling lord, sent his two younger brothers to make war at Maliwan city. The battle was heavy and entangled. Shatrughna was struck by the asura's spear. I ask for your stone ball so it may be taken up to grind medicine and anoint the splendid younger brother of Phra Hari's line. It must be done tonight, and I must hurry back."

Then the thoughtful naga king heard and had no doubt or reluctance. He picked up the stone ball and gave it to the monkey.

Then the war-wise son of Phra Kal, having obtained the mighty stone ball, split through the earth and came back up.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of solar-line Bharata and presented all the medicines together with the grinding stone.

Then Bharata, sky-radiant lord of men, immediately gave all those medicines to Phiphek the kumbhanda.

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha received the medicine from Phra Chakri's younger brother and set it down before the stone. He raised his hands above his head and consecrated it with Vedic spells. When he had completed three rounds according to the manual, he gathered his spirit and ground it.

When it was finished, he consecrated it again three times with the mantra Phra Suli had granted. He applied it to the wound made by the victorious spear and smeared it over the whole body. Mekhaphat slipped out from the body of splendid solar-line Shatrughna. By the power of Phra Suli's medicine, no wound remained on his body.

Then noble Shatrughna, the younger brother, revived and regained awareness. Seeing the elder brother who shared his heart, he was greatly glad. He moved down from his lap, bowed, and said: "When your servant went out to win victory and fought that asura, I was careless in battle and was struck by the yaksha weapon. If Your Majesty had not come to save me at once, I would not have survived and returned. Your grace is higher than sky, earth, Mount Sumeru, and the world-circling mountains. I will serve beneath your feet until my life ends."

Then solar-line Bharata heard his younger brother lament. He received his life-spirit back and said: "The blessed Phra Chakri sent us to subdue the yakshas. If your life had ended, elder brother too would have died after you." Having spoken, he mounted the chariot throne and ordered the ten great armies to withdraw. Their shouts thundered and shook the three worlds as they returned to the golden pavilion.

Then, on the side of the yaksha scouts, they were hiding near the mountain foot, listening for news of the enemy. Seeing the human come back to life and the monkeys shout in loud uproar, they were frightened as if they would sink into the earth, and the asuras hurried back into the victory city.

When they arrived, they went straight in to attend, bowed their heads with joined hands, and reported: "The human has not died. The army has withdrawn back to the pavilion."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard and stood stunned in his whole body. The asura reflected: "That human was struck by the victorious spear. It seems wrong that he did not perish. Surely they obtained medicine to cure the poison through Phiphek the asura's thought. That creature is terribly vile. I will cut off his head, display it for all the world to see, and satisfy my jealousy and wrath." Having thought this, he gave an order, commanding the heavenly palace women: "Go find my beloved son, who is one life with me, and bring Suriya Phop up here."

Then the beloved ladies-in-waiting received the asura king's command, paid homage, took leave, and flew away.

When they arrived, they went straight in to attend, bowed with joined hands, and reported: "The lord who rules the three worlds sent us to announce the royal word. Since the human enemy has returned to life in the body, you are invited to come and consult on royal affairs, to plan the destruction of the foe."

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha heard the news, hot as fire, and his heart was choked with anger. "How can this be? How did the human cure my divine weapon?" Thinking this, he descended from the victory palace, and the palace women followed.

When he arrived, he bowed his head in homage to his royal yaksha father and sat amid the ministers, waiting to hear the royal word.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw the beloved son who shared his life and gave command: "The enemy you killed has come back to life because that vile Phiphek told them the medicine to counter it. This war is powerful, like a battle of the lord of gods in heaven, and all those monkey troops are skilled in fighting. Father is greatly troubled; it may become like the time of the ten-faced yaksha. What plan will make the enemy perish?"

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha bowed his head and answered the command: "Sky-ruling lord, do not be troubled. Even if that Phiphek knows the medicine that cures Mekhaphat, your beloved son is still mighty in power. The mace, the bow, and victorious arrows remain; so does the splendid jeweled discus, powerful enough to subdue every class of gods. Why fear those wretches? Today I will march out to fight, destroy the two humans by the fierce power of my weapons, and kill the monkey host by my own hands."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard as if heavenly nectar had been poured over his body, refreshing him. His four mouths laughed happily, and his eight hands clapped until the sound rang out. He stroked his son's back and gave command: "You are like my very eyes and heart. Your power was not bestowed in vain; none in the three worlds equals it. Since you will march out to win victory over the enemy, may the two humans and the monkeys be defeated by the force of your sacred arrows. May whatever you think be fulfilled as your heart desires. My life, go safely."

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha received the blessing of his father, lord of the earth, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

When he reached the great palace, he ordered the yaksha ministers: "Prepare the fourfold army. I will go kill those vile ones."

Then wise and brave Supinsan bowed his head, received the command, and the demon lord left the royal hall.

They mustered a fourfold army, selecting only proud and strong warriors. Elephant lords rode rutting elephants, their coverings firmly fastened and splendid. Horse lords rode noble horses, fierce and quick as lions. Chariot lords rode three-crested chariots with dragon flags planted high in display of power. Commanders arranged troops; the ranks were noisy, dense, and countless as the Akaniṭṭha heaven. Some carried spears, glaives, poison-guns, maces, bows, and sacred arrows. All brandished weapons like flashes of fire. Officers and soldiers raised a great tumult. Ordered in neat rows, the troops filled the roads.

Then the son of the four-faced yaksha king, when the auspicious hour drew near, came to the bathing place.

He cleansed and bathed in perfumed water fragrant with pollen. He put on a lower cloth with curved borders and a fig-colored waistcloth. His fluttering panel was set with coral in coiled stems; his side panel had emerald and ruby insets. His upper garment was purple with gold disks, and his chest ornament was patterned with direction-plates. Bracelets and armlets shaped like serpents adorned him; rings bore blood-red gems. He wore a bright jeweled crown, flower ornaments, earrings, and ear-pieces. Hanging a golden garland and holding mace, jeweled discus, bow, and arrows, he looked like his powerful father and walked to mount the victory chariot.

O chariot, war-chariot: its wheels and spokes were crystal and splendid. The single raised yoke was graceful and delicately curved; tiered images ringed the floating throne. Coiled-vine houses, paneled pillars, Brahma arrows on either side, and hanging scrollwork surrounded it. Sparkling crystal panels shone with jewels, brilliant and beautiful as Indra's palace. It was harnessed to four thousand royal lions. Lothan, holding the artful bow, drove it forward swiftly as a flying swan. High insignia screened the bright sun. Pipes, drums, and gongs joined their voices, sounding as if the earth had turned over. Officers and soldiers shouted in a vast roar, and the host hurried onward.

When he reached the battlefield, he halted the great army and set its formations near the line of mountain slopes.

Then splendid, radiant Bharata sat on the shining jeweled seat in the golden pavilion. The soldiers of the three cities, yakshas and monkeys all together, crouched in attendance according to rank like stars encircling the moon. Then they heard a great shouting, thundering as if the earth shook. The sky grew dim, the sun's light was covered, and dark smoke spread thickly.

He gave royal command, asking Phiphek, the great astrologer: "That mighty sound: who is marching here today?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal word, and read the time: both the Asakan and the Three-Eye omens, according to the yaksha observation he knew. Seeing clearly, with no doubt in his soul, the asura reported with wisdom: "The army marching out to fight is Suriya Phop, brave-hearted. He will end his life on this battlefield, for his age has reached the death-point, and the day cannot be passed over. I invite Your Majesty, powerful lord, to go kill the asura."

Then solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek and rejoiced. He gave royal command to mighty Phraya Sukhrip: "Muster the brave host. We will march out to fight and destroy that unrighteous one."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, the great soldier, received the powerful lord's command, bowed, and hurried out.

He arranged a formation of brave soldiers. The child of Phra Kal was the bird's head. Nilarat and Nilanon were its two eyes; Nilapanan, the commander, was the mouth. Nilek was the tongue; the monkey Nilakhan was the throat. The right wing was Hatthawikan; the left wing was Wisantrawi. Brave Surasen and Surakan were the bird's two feet. The royal division was the body, and Chomphuphan the monkey was the tail. Jangkien was made the claws, and yakshas, monkey lords, and warriors alternated as the dark hawk's feathers. Sukhrip, Hanuman, Ongkhot, Phiphek, and mighty Asuraphat, his grandson, stood beside the royal chariot together. They set the ranks in ordered layers and waited for the king to come.

Then radiant Bharata and the younger brother who shared his life went to the bathing place.

The two kings bathed and refreshed their bodies. Golden lotuses were scattered like rainfall. They wore divine perfumes blended with blossom pollen. Their lower garments and cloths were of different colors, raised in heavenly patterns with scrollwork stems. Side panels were set with coral; fluttering panels shone with golden gems. Upper garments gleamed with bright gold; three shining chains crossed their bodies. Ruby direction-plates, fine chest ornaments, necklaces, and armlets adorned them. Bracelets set with diamond jewels, jeweled rings with fluttering housings, paired emerald gems fit for emperors, and nine-gem ear-pieces glittered. They hung flower garlands and each held bow, weapon, and sword, beautiful as the sun and moon, then followed one another to mount the royal chariot.

O emerald chariot: its raised yoke curved delicately and beautifully. The gold-underlaid body, spokes, rim, and hubs shone with nine gems. Tiered stages were divided by rows of images: reverent gods, Garudas, and crowded lions. It was as beautiful as an emperor's chariot, with a fluttering tiered pavilion and flowerwork. Four horses, white as conch shells and strong as royal lions, were harnessed to it. The chariot lord flourished the whip and drove it as swiftly as the sun's car. Shatrughna sat in front with joined hands. Peacock parasols shone with radiant light; fly-whisks screened the noble sun. Curved trumpets, gongs, and drums sounded in festive war music. Chaiyampawan, mighty in battle, waved the flag and led the army formation. The monkeys shouted in a deep roar and hurried eagerly onward.

Then, on Suriya Phop the yaksha's side, he stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the humans marching from far away. Angry, he ground his teeth and stamped his foot until everything trembled. He roared a lion-roar and proclaimed: "Hey, Waiyakasun, commander, drive the yaksha host forward. Break and storm the splendid monkey army. Kill even the chief warriors, satisfying my arrogant heart."

Then Waiyakasun the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, and drove the army into battle.

Then the war-skilled demon troops ran in turmoil, pressed together in close combat, and fought against the monkey lords. They hurled weapons in confusion, and some shot arrows. The sound of guns thundered and shook the earth; the asuras gave no thought to life.

Then the monkey vanguard had no time to set itself or halt its bodies; the yakshas suddenly stormed in and fought. Some stood and resisted in combat; some recoiled and retreated, until the troop captains chased them, inspected them, and beat them back. The monkey bands returned to win victory. They kicked, slapped, bit, wrestled, and struck, and demon soldiers died in heaps beyond counting. Some snatched weapons in confusion, leaping and chasing to stab and cut the asuras.

Then the yaksha troops fought fiercely, pressing and striking from every side. The left and right wings flanked them together. The monkey vanguard lost ground. The asuras shouted in a thunderous voice; gunfire darkened the field with thick smoke, and they chased, stabbed, and cut in turmoil.

Then the monkey bands of the two great hawk-wings, with the support and reserve divisions, rushed in together to meet them. The asuras would not stand to fight. The monkeys surged forward, stormed, and seized them, gained advantage, and attacked every division. The demon troops broke apart and lost their senses.

Then Kalawut and Kalachak the yakshas saw the monkeys pressing forward in battle and the soldiers scattering in defeat. The two officers shook with anger, ground their teeth, and fixed their hearts on killing. They stamped their feet and roared in uproar, brandished their maces, leapt, and bounded. They drove into the middle of the monkey host with brave power, and the monkey bands ran in panic while the two demons attacked and pressed through them.

Then splendid Nilaphat and Nilanon saw the yakshas striking the army. Angry, they brandished tridents and sprang in. Nilaphat seized Kalawut with fierce brave power, and mighty Nilanon seized Kalachak in the open field. The four endured stubbornly, each one brave and hard, turning and wrestling in forceful combat, striking and stabbing without lowering their hands.

Then Kalawut and Kalachak, skilled in war, each resisted one monkey. They brandished maces and leapt into battle, meeting, guarding, and parrying back and forth, wheeling and changing stance in turmoil. Each had fierce power, and they snatched for weapons in confusion.

Then Nilaphat and Nilanon, great soldiers, fought close and fast. They broke through, chased, and kicked with their feet. When the yakshas fell to the ground, they sprang up, stamped on their chests, and struck them with mighty diamond tridents. The asuras' lives ended.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha saw the two monkeys attack and kill the two asuras. He was enraged, angry as final fire, and stamped his foot until the world trembled. He seized the victorious bow, set the string, and shot by his power.

Crack, crack, like thunderbolts: arrows filled the Akaniṭṭha heaven, struck the hostile monkey soldiers, and their lives ended in heaps.

Then solar-line Bharata saw the asura's arrows fly and strike the monkey host. The monkey soldiers died piled in heaps. He drew the Phlai Wat arrow, drew it back with great power, and the younger brother of the four-armed lord released it.

The sound thundered and shook the three worlds. It struck the demon arrows, which broke and could not withstand it. The whole victorious yaksha army died in ruin, while the monkey soldiers came back to life all together.

Then the son of splendid Cakkrawat saw the arrow erase the kumbhanda arrows and the whole host perish. He ground his teeth until the sky rang, his two eyes blazing like suns. He seized the splendid jeweled discus and hurled it by his power.

The discus floated in thick waves. Its thunderous sound was loud, and it circled the jeweled royal chariot, displaying power to destroy.

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, saw the discus of the eight-handed king's son flying hot and close to the chariot. He set the Chandra-Aditya arrow on the string, intending to erase the yaksha weapon. He drew it with his power, and the sky-ruling lord released it at once.

The victorious arrow chased and erased the demon discus. Its sound shook every region. It struck the asura's royal chariot too, and chariot and discus became dust together.

Then mighty Suriya Phop fell from the shining jeweled chariot, and the kumbhanda grew still angrier. He rose, brandished his mace-weapon, displayed fierce brave power, stamped, leapt, and seized the chariot yoke at once. Like the kumbhanda Phaichitra seizing Indra's Vejayanta, he dragged and hauled it, intending to fight by the strength and power of a demon lord.

Then the younger brother of Phra Hari's line, bearer of the discus, saw the son of the four-faced king seize and break the royal chariot-yoke. The lord's hand brandished the bow-weapon, beautiful beyond comparison, and struck the asura so he staggered back by the king's great power. Then he descended from the royal chariot together with splendid Shatrughna and pursued the asura into the midst of the army.

Then Suriya Phop the yaksha alone resisted the two kings. He brandished his mace, surged forward, and fought, striking left and sweeping right in uproar. The three grappled like a turning discus, wheeling and changing stance in confusion, and the kumbhanda did not lower his hands.

Then the two younger brothers of Narai, bearers of bows, each brandished a powerful sacred bow and pressed the asura in battle. The elder brother mounted his left shoulder; the younger brother stepped on his right knee. Shatrughna pulled and seized the mace, and Bharata struck the asura so he flew away.

Then he took up the Brahmastra arrow, given by Phra Narai himself, set it on the string, aimed to erase life, drew, and released it by his power.

Earth and sky trembled; the sound shook every region. It struck Suriya Phop, ended his life, and sent him flying to Mount Cakkrawan.

Then gods and heavenly women in every place, dwelling in their divine palaces, saw the four-armed Avatara's younger brother destroy Suriya Phop by the arrow's light and make him fall on the battlefield. Each rejoiced steadily, opened jeweled windows, leaned out smiling with bright faces, and laughed happily. Some played instruments, plucked and bowed in busy music. Some scattered divine golden popped rice and heavenly mandara flowers down. Fragrance spread everywhere, delighting the heart, and all the city of heaven gave blessings of victory.

Then Bharata and Shatrughna, when the asura had been killed and the gods had scattered divine flowers, saw them strewn over the forest floor with sweet perfume. The lord picked them up, smelled them, admired them in delight, and mounted the victorious chariot. He ordered the soldiers, yakshas and monkeys great and small, to withdraw. Their shouts thundered and shook the three worlds as they returned to the golden pavilion.

Then, on the side of the yaksha scouts, they were hiding around the mountain foot. Seeing the kumbhanda Suriya Phop struck by the arrow and dead in battle, they were shocked, pale-faced, and shaking. Taking forest shortcuts, they hurried together into the city.

When they arrived, they bowed at the lotus feet of Cakkrawat the yaksha and reported: "The royal son fought against the royal enemies. Now he has been struck by an arrow and died; the whole brave army has perished. As for the demon lord's corpse, it was shattered and cannot be seen."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha learned that his mighty son had lost his life on the battlefield by the human's splendid arrow, vanished without even a corpse remaining. He was shocked as if a youth had overturned his royal world. Tears shot out from his eyes. In great suffering, grief, and weeping, he opened his mouth, gasped, sighed, and lamented in longing.

"O Suriya Phop, my son, why have you come to death? You were mighty as final fire, able to subdue heaven and the underworld. I raised and cherished you, intending that you should rule the royal city and be lord of the asura hosts. Have you come to be defeated by vile enemies? It is disgrace and shame; the three worlds will scorn and rejoice at it. All the labor of being a solar-line yaksha, upholding the world's foundation, is lost. From this day you are hidden from sight, like the moon gone out with all its light. Now the enemy kings will only grow more arrogant. O my breast, who will go out and help your father kill as you, mighty one, would?" So he grieved and lamented.

When his grief cleared, cruel thought returned. The demon king grew furious and impulsive. "Bah, bah, humans no larger than flies have come to insult me too far. Good then, what does it matter? I will destroy their lives yet. Listen, quick wise ministers: go bring Banlai Chak up here."

Then the honored minister received the command, paid homage, took leave, and hurried to the royal son's palace.

When he arrived, he bowed his head and reported at the lotus feet: "Your renowned elder brother has died at the hands of the royal enemy. Now the blessed royal father has sent me to invite Your Highness to attend the king in the royal hall."

Then mighty Banlai Chak learned that his elder brother, the kumbhanda, had lost his life to the enemies. Love and loss overwhelmed him, as if someone had gouged out his eyes. Filled with anger and resentment, he hurried to the jeweled hall.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of his royal yaksha father. Tears flowed over the asura's face as he waited to hear the royal word.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his beloved son, who shared his life, and gave royal command: "Listen, Banlai Chak, my beloved wise and brave son. Your elder brother went out to fight and ended his life in battle. I see no one else proud enough to go out to war. You, mighty in terrible power, must go erase humans and monkeys. He arranged skilled soldiers in four fierce, brave divisions. One troop wore blue coats and held raised spears, ready to thrust. One troop wore golden-flower coats and brandished lances in circling display. One troop wore red coats and held bows strung with poisoned arrows. One troop all wore patterned coats, held gold-tipped weapons, and carried krises at the belt. Each warrior was powerful, able to fight a thousand enemies. Elephant lords bridled war-elephants and made the earth thunder. Horse lords saddled fierce horses whose feet were swift as the wind. Chariot lords harnessed chariots to lions, while charioteers stood holding hammers. They set the army in a packed formation, dense and noisy over the earth.

Golden lotuses were scattered cleanly, like the flowing current of Anotatta. He wore perfumes mixed with golden brightness, spreading fragrance everywhere and delighting the heart. His lower cloth had raised vinework and falling scrolls, with curved borders and gem flowers trembling. A green-and-gold cloth was put on; his upper garment was splendid. Crystal armor strapped to his breast with scale-pattern scrollwork; diamond chains, direction-plates, and pearls adorned him. Necklaces, chest ornaments with coral disks, radiant armlets, and bracelets shone. He wore great jeweled rings and a jeweled crown; diamond ear-pieces gleamed bright. Holding the mighty Heraphot, he walked to mount the shining chariot.

O royal war-chariot: wheels and crystal spokes were set in alternating colors. The raised yoke was all jewels, and the tiered pavilion stood on the shining throne. The first tier had standing lions, the second showed brilliant Garudas, the third had rows of reverent gods, with shining crestwork and sparkling crystal pillars. It was harnessed to royal lions, four thousand fierce and skilled in battle. Lothan, expert in war, flourished the lance and drove the chariot onward. High insignia, jeweled fly-whisks, peacock parasols, fans, and royal screens were arranged in ranks. Flags waved before the chariot as the sign. Pipes and drums roared; the music thundered as if the earth shook. Demon hosts answered one another with shouts and hastened the army onward.
