This is the ninety-fifth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Banlai Chak's first battle against Bharata and Shatrughna, his withdrawal after Bharata's arrows wound him, his attempt to empower the Heraphot arrow through a three-day rite on Mount Cakkrawan, Cakkrawat sending Marakabin to hold the battle, Nilaphat killing Marakabin, Angkhot and Asuraphat breaking Banlai Chak's rite, and Banlai Chak returning to Maliwan to muster for renewed war.

Banlai Chak's Broken Rite

Then the younger brother of Phra Harirak, Chakrakrit, when golden light shone bright from the eastern sky, heard the pleasant voices of cicadas and crickets, cuckoos and jeweled fowl calling. The stars and moon slipped behind the Seven Mountains; the sun rose above Mount Yukhonthon. Swarms of insects, bees, and golden honey-bees sipped blossom pollen. The wind carried scattered fragrance, and the king invited his younger brother.

They entered to bathe and dress, radiant as divine figures, and moved gracefully out to the front of the splendid pavilion.

He mounted the jeweled ruby seat, with the brave monkey soldiers ready. They crouched and bowed at his lotus feet like Indra going out among the gods. Then he heard a tremendous sound, a shout shaking and thundering. He asked Phiphek the kumbhanda: "Whose army is marching here today?"

Then Phiphek, lord of yakshas, received the command of the divine-line king, and the asura read the omen. He counted from the sun to the moon, dividing the signs so nothing was missed. Seeing clearly, with no doubt in his heart, he bowed and answered the royal word: "The army that has marched out is named Banlai Chak the yaksha, younger brother of Suriya Phop the asura, son of the lord of Maliwan city. The Heraphot arrow is his weapon. He is fierce in power, strong in force, rough, wicked, brave, and hardened in war; he has subdued even the heavens."

Then solar-line Bharata, the lord, learned the astrologer's words and gave command: "Listen, child of the Sun. Arrange the brave soldiers. I myself will march out to fight and destroy the enemy kings."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, bowed his head, received the royal word, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged a battle formation and selected only proud, brave warriors. Each one was mighty in power and moved through the sky swiftly. If they wished to scoop up the earth or lift Mount Meru, they could do it. With one hand they could bail out the great ocean and make it dry by power. Each one was fierce, brave, and seasoned, bold enough to plunder the Dusit heaven. If they wanted the moon or the sun, they could pluck it down as they wished. They brandished weapons in uproar, restless and proud in war, each brave, each eager, waiting for the king to come.

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, invited his mighty younger brother and moved to bathe in the water.

The two kings cleansed and bathed. Fragrant streams spread perfume. Their lower garments were fit for Indra, patterned with coiling naga-scrolls. They wore divine cloths of different colors, raised with heavenly golden borders. Fluttering panels were coiled with golden vines; side panels were carved with chased designs. Their upper garments were fine gold cloth; three chains crossed their bodies. Direction-plates, diamond-bright chest ornaments, naga-shaped armlets, bracelets, and blood-red gem rings shone. Each wore crown, ear-pieces, and lovely red-gold flowers. The elder brother was beautiful as the sun, the younger as the moon-god. Each took up mighty sacred arrows and invited the noble younger brother to mount the chariot.

O royal chariot: its spokes and rim were all emerald. Its three raised yokes were graceful and delicate, with tiered crestwork and a floating throne. Rows of reverent gods joined their fingers; Garudas held dangling naga heads. Jeweled panels and paneled pillars were adorned with gems; five bright tops gleamed. It was harnessed to four noble horses, all beautiful and pure yellow, adorned with city-worthy nine gems and every instrument for victory in war. The younger brother sat in front with joined hands, beautiful as a god. The chariot lord brandished weapons, displayed fierce power, and drove forward. Royal umbrellas, fly-whisks, victory flags, side-flags, and streaming banners filled the earth. Monkey troops and demon troops were eager for war. Pipes, gongs, and drums joined their voices; the shouting thundered, and the chariot wheels roared as they hurried quickly onward.

When they reached the battlefield, he halted the great army and set it firmly at the forest edge, waiting to see the asura's mighty power.

Then Banlai Chak the yaksha stood in his chariot in the middle of the army and saw the monkey army marching up. Angry, he ground his teeth, fixed his mind on killing, stamped his foot, and gave royal command to drive the chariot forward.

When he came near, he spoke: "Hey, wicked human, how great is your power? You are like a chick coming to fight Garuda. All on the surface of the earth, up to heaven and down to the underworld, fear me, mighty in fierce power, and no one dares meet me in battle. You two brothers: can you endure the force of my arrows? Hurry, raise the monkey host and return to Ayutthaya city. Enjoy your wealth and possessions there in happy ease. If you do not listen, you will die by my power."

Then radiant Bharata smiled and answered: "Hey, hey, wicked asura. You are like a firefly with little light trying to compete with the fierce sun. You are fit to be shattered and destroyed by the arrows of me, who am skilled in mighty power. Where is your brother Suriya Phop the kumbhanda now? Think about that first. You are quite good at boasting without shame before your army. As for this army of ours, if we do not take the yaksha city, do not wonder whether we will return home. We will grind and kill the demon city to the last."

Then mighty, brave-hearted Banlai Chak heard and grew angry as final fire. The demon lord ground his teeth. "Bah, bah, look at this little human. Your words are gross and deluded. Good; now we will see. I will cut you apart so no crow's throat need hunger." Having spoken, he gave royal command: "Hey, Nonthakan the yaksha, hurry and drive the great army in to kill the enemy."

Then Nonthakan the yaksha received the command and drove the army in to attack the monkeys.

They hurled weapons in confusion; each shot arrows. They pressed forward into combat, stormed, fought hand to hand, stabbed, and cut in uproar.

Then the brave monkey troops saw the yaksha bands attacking and separated into crow-wing formation to meet them. The reserves pushed forward in layers. The vanguard leapt and seized the enemy. Gaining advantage, they struck from the flanks in every division, and the demon troops died crushed and senseless.

Then Nonthasur and Nonthakan the yakshas saw the monkeys chasing in battle and asuras dying everywhere. The two officers were angry in confusion, each intent on killing. They leapt, bounded, and pierced forward, brandishing maces as they entered the fight. They struck left and swept right swiftly, wheeling and attacking in the middle of battle. The monkey troops would not stand before them, but scattered and ran in turmoil.

Then diligent Asuraphat and Nilaphat saw the monkeys lose advantage to the kumbhandas. The two ground their teeth and entered the fight. Nilaphat rushed and seized Nonthasur the yaksha; Asuraphat sprang in and fought, seizing Nonthakan the asura. The four turned and tangled in confusion, each enduring, each brave. The two monkeys stabbed the two demon lords, and by their power the demons' lives ended.

Then Banlai Chak the yaksha saw the two mighty monkeys kill the two asuras. Angry, he ground his teeth and stamped his foot until all trembled. He seized the victorious bow, set it on the string, and shot by his power.

The sound thundered over the earth and shook up to the Dusit palaces. It struck the enemy army, and lives ended in heaps.

Then solar-line Bharata saw the monkeys lying dead over the earth. The sky-ruling lord took up an arrow and released it.

It roared throughout the whole world-system. Demon troops died in countless heaps. The lion-charioteers perished, and the victorious chariot shattered at once.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, fell to the earth when his chariot broke. The asura sprang up and stood firm. Seeing his soldiers dead everywhere, he trembled with rage. Brandishing the victorious bow like final fire, he climbed onto the royal chariot and fought without lowering his hand.

Then Shatrughna, solar-line bearer of the bow, received his hand and parried with power. The king rushed and seized the asura. Each had mighty weapons and fought on the royal chariot. Shatrughna struck with the mighty sword, and the yaksha fell down to the earth.

Then radiant Bharata took up an arrow, set it on the string at once, and the king shot by his power.

The sound thundered and shook the three worlds. Arrows filled the Akaniṭṭha heaven and struck the enemy asura, covering his whole body.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, struck by the human's powerful arrows, felt as if his life would end. He ground his teeth and held up his body with proud, brave heart. Raising his hands, he remembered his teacher's grace, and the demon lord recited spells by his power.

When three rounds were complete, he stroked downward. The arrows slipped from the yaksha's body, and no wound irritated his flesh. The asura reflected: "Chih, this human is brave, precise, and skilled with sacred arrows. His soldiers too are powerful, useful exactly as his mind desires. As for the asura kumbhanda host, many have fallen dead fighting them. Now it is near dusk, past the time for winning victory." Thinking this, he ordered the brave soldiers, the many demon officers great and small, to withdraw. Like asuras fearing Indra's power, they returned to the royal city.

Then solar-line Bharata, radiant in glory, when Banlai Chak the asura withdrew his army into the city and the sun was at evening, saw the moon's clear light in the sky, its halo free of clouds, pleasing to the eye, and stars scattered everywhere. He ordered the soldiers, the monkey officers great and small, to withdraw. Their shouts thundered through the heavens as they returned to the shining pavilion.

Then Banlai Chak the yaksha, when he reached the victory city, went up to the royal hall.

He bowed his head at the feet of his royal father, in the midst of all the solar-line clan gathered thickly.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his royal son come up and asked by command: "Today you went to fight the human. How was it? Did the war lose advantage, or did you gain victory, that you have come at night?"

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, heard the royal word, raised joined hands, and answered the command: "Your son marched out and fought for victory in a heavy battle. Those two human brothers have sacred arrows whose power is splendid. Every time they shoot, their force is like thunderbolts from heaven. Your son's whole body was wounded and bruised, as if life would end. All the monkey soldiers are strong in power. Even after I killed them by thousands, they came back to life and fought again. This war is powerful; it cannot be treated lightly or with contempt. I ask leave to go consecrate my arrow on Mount Cakkrawan. Let someone go hold the battle, standing against their brave strength. In three days I will march back to fight and destroy their lives completely."

Then the four-faced yaksha king heard as if heavenly nectar had been poured over the asura's body. Stroking his back, he answered: "You are my splendid heart. This Heraphot arrow has no equal in the three worlds. What are humans and forest monkeys, that their lives should not end? Go perform the rite and consecrate that weapon until its power is terrible. I will send Marakabin the kumbhanda with the great army to hold the battle until my heart returns."

Then Banlai Chak the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, raised joined hands, and returned to the shining palace.

He mounted the chariot throne with the ten yaksha armies and drove swiftly through the sky by power to Mount Cakkrawan.

When he arrived, he descended from the air and ordered the brave ministers: "Quickly build a ritual hall, nine splendid rooms, decorated with royal fences, parasols, and flags, set near the mountain foot. I will worship the enduring Vedic powers and consecrate the arrow so its power shines."

Then the four demon ministers received the command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out to the great army.

They assigned sides and divisions among all the demon troops, great and small, to build the shining ritual hall along the mountain slope.

Then the demon troop-captains of left and right hurried the soldiers to cut wood and carry it in uproar. Some dug holes and shaped posts, planing and smoothing them amid loud noise. They set up the royal ritual hall according to each station of service: nine long rooms with verandas, royal fences and parasols arrayed on all four sides. Above, they spread a canopy hung with great flower garlands. In the middle they set a jeweled throne-altar, with offering tablets and rice-cones left and right. Silver and gold candles were arranged. Everything was finished according to the asura's command.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, when the royal ritual hall was finished, rejoiced as if he had obtained Indra's palace. He took off all the ornaments from his body and handed them to the attendants. Descending from the jeweled ruby chariot, he went gracefully to bathe in the river.

He scrubbed away dust, sweat, and grime, clearing every stain from the yaksha body. He applied fragrant perfumes, put on shining white cloth, then tied on a red ascetic waist-cloth. He wore an ascetic undergarment like a rishi, wrapped his matted topknot on his head, and put on a splendid jeweled rosary. With white cloth slung crosswise, holding the Heraphot and the arrow-weapon, when the auspicious hour was firm he walked into the ritual hall.

He mounted the brilliant shining throne-seat, splendid as a god of ascetic law come from the Dusit heaven. Then he lit incense and candles in homage to splendid supreme Brahma. The fire-pit was set according to the rite, and the asura closed his eyes in meditation.

Then, on Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha's side, after Banlai Chak the asura had taken leave to establish the ritual work, he ordered Marakabin the asura: "You, mighty and brave, march with the great demon army to resist and hold their army. Stand firm for three days. Do not let them break in until my beloved son completes the consecration of the victorious arrow and returns."

Then Marakabin, powerful yaksha, bowed his head, received the royal command, paid homage, took leave, and left the royal hall.

He arranged an army of soldiers, selecting only strong, powerful warriors. Ten fierce and brave divisions were made, all completed according to the demon king's command. Then he dressed in war-clothing, strange and beautiful in true soldierly style, held a splendid jeweled spear, and leapt onto the back of Manomai.

O war-horse, black and deep-colored, huge and tall: its feet were agile and swift, able to flee or pursue without tiring. It charged bravely in battle, eager to fight; its feet kicked, its mouth bit, and it would not retreat. It neighed fiercely in great uproar and could circle Mount Cakkrawan without resting. The shouts rose in urgent waves, and it leapt as if plundering the three worlds. The soldiers too were fierce, displaying vast sacred power. Some demons split and entered the earth; some flew up into the sky. Dust covered the clouds as they hurried to the victorious battlefield.

When he reached the battlefield, he halted the soldiers great and small and set a firm defending army along the mountain slope.

Then solar-line Bharata lay on the shining seat in the golden pavilion. As the late-night hour passed and dawn grew bright over the sky, he heard the pleasant voices of jeweled fowl, cranes, and peacocks calling through the forest, and cicadas singing sweetly. The sound was lovely and astonishing, like graceful women singing beside his bed.

He rose, bathed, and dressed, shining like the moon, and with the younger brother who shared his heart went out among the ministers.

All the monkey kings stood ready with joined hands everywhere. Then he heard a battle shout in uproar, thundering as far as Mayura Mountain. He asked Thao Thotsakhiriwong, great diamond-line Brahma-yaksha: "This army that is marching here: is it Banlai Chak the asura, or someone else?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the king's command and read the omen according to the time. Seeing clearly as with divine eyes, by the yaksha methods of observation, he bowed his head and answered: "This battle that has marched here now is the army of the soldier named Marakabin the yaksha. As for Banlai Chak the asura, he has gone to establish a fire-bowl rite, consecrating the Heraphot arrow at the great Mount Cakkrawan. In three days it will become powerful enough to subdue all ten directions. Thao Cakkrawat the asura gave royal command to a soldier who shares his thought and has power, sending him with troops to set a blocking army along the mountain slope. I ask that Nilaphat the monkey go kill the kumbhanda. Let Asuraphat and Pali's son, mighty in power, go destroy the rite and make his knowledge fail."

Then solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek the asura and gave command to the child of Phra Kal: "You, mighty one, march out with the brave monkey soldiers, fight, and kill Marakabin. As for Angkhot the monkey lord and Asuraphat, Hanuman's son and great soldier, go erase the fire-bowl rite and finish it at this time."

Then Angkhot, grandson of Thao Kosi, Asuraphat, and mighty Nilaphat raised joined hands and received the royal command. The three officers bowed and took leave at the feet of the younger brother of royal Narai, then hurried together out from the splendid golden pavilion.

On Nilaphat's side, he arranged the army, selecting only skilled, powerful warriors from the city of Chomphu, ten seas of monkeys complete. The two other officers put on war-gear and displayed fierce power until the earth shook. Each separated and went according to the royal command.

Nilaphat, mighty in power, marched with the brave army. They filled the earth, packed together like water in the sea. When they reached the battlefield, they halted near the mountain foot, set themselves on a firm victory-ground, and waited to see the asura's power.

Then Marakabin, powerful yaksha, saw the monkey army marching up and the asura cried out: "Hey, you animals. Where is your human master? Why has he sent only forest monkeys with this great army? What is the name of the splendid monkey who is army-chief, bold enough to come fight me, mighty in power? You are like young deer trying to oppose the royal lion's power, fit only to be shattered by my hand, all the monkey host together."

Then victorious Nilaphat, great soldier, heard and shouted back: "Hey, arrogant wretch. I am the soldier of the jeweled discus lord, named Phraya Nilaphat the brave, viceroy of Chomphu city, whose power outshines the earth. Now the younger brother of the lord of the Bhucha line, named splendid Bharata, has ordered me to march the army and take your life. Do not boast of your power and bravery. How could you withstand my skill? You are fit to lose your life in less than a blink."

Then Marakabin, powerful yaksha, heard and answered: "You are named Nilaphat? You are like a little child who does not know to fear death, bringing your body to touch the whirling discus. Your head will fall from your body by the hand of me, mighty in power."

Then victorious Nilaphat heard the asura's words, pointed at his face, and said: "Hey, wretch, you speak arrogantly beyond your face and do not know Phra Kal. Do not be proud and boast of power; this moment you will see." Having spoken, he drew his trident and brandished it, displaying terrible power until all trembled, and drove the monkey bands to attack the asura.

Then the splendid monkey troops separated and chased into battle, striking the kumbhanda army into confusion.

They bit with mouths, kicked with feet, and slapped with hands, running in circles, surging, and chasing. They broke the enemy by the force of great power and did not slacken or lower their hands.

Then the war-skilled demon troops separated and seized monkeys, fighting hand to hand in close combat. Shooting, thrusting, stabbing, and cutting in confusion, they endured stubbornly and did not retreat. Grappling and biting, they wrestled in combat, and the asuras gave no thought to dying.

Then all the monkey troops surged and broke them with bodily force. Officers and soldiers pressed forward in layers. The monkey soldiers snatched weapons, cutting, stabbing, and fighting without stopping. The demon army died and broke throughout the victorious host, while the monkeys pressed and struck from every side.

Then brave-hearted Marakabin saw his soldiers die and grew angry. He drove his horse and brandished his spear, entering to thrust. Wheeling left, right, front, and rear with strong bold power, he stabbed monkeys dead all over the open field, and the asura chased and stabbed in confusion.

Then the child of Phra Kal, the great soldier, saw the yaksha stabbing the forest-monkey bands. Angry, he chased out and broke through to strike. With his left hand he seized and broke the horse's neck; with his right he snatched the yaksha's spear and stabbed the horse so its life ended. The asura fell to the earth.

Then brave-hearted mighty Marakabin, having lost the horse and the splendid jeweled spear, was frightened in his heart. Then pride and arrogance rose; angry, he sprang back up, swiftly drew his mace, brandished it, and chased into battle. He struck left and swept right in turmoil with fierce war-strength. Each was hard and eager in combat, fighting hand to hand and meeting each other back and forth.

Then brave victorious Nilaphat leapt by his power and seized and broke the mace at once. He brandished his diamond trident like final fire, sprang in, and thrust at the yaksha. The asura fell to the earth, and his life ended.

When the destruction of Marakabin was finished, Nilaphat the great soldier marched the great army back to the golden pavilion.

Then, on the side of Angkhot the brave soldier and Asuraphat his nephew, when they reached the slope of Mount Cakkrawan, they looked and saw the ritual hall towering by the mountain foot. Demon bands patrolled around on every side. The two officers brandished weapons and displayed fierce power until the earth shook. They descended swiftly from the air and entered, chasing and killing the kumbhanda troops.

Heads were cut off, bodies were cut apart, hands were cut away, and bodies fell rolling through the forest. All the soldiers who remained ran apart and scattered in uproar.

They saw Banlai Chak raising the arrow, joining his hands, and reciting Vedic spells. Asuraphat bounded in, seized the asura by the hair, and yanked. Angkhot, grandson of Thao Hatsanai, sprang in and kicked the yaksha. He fell from the shining throne, and the two officers crowded in and struck the demon lord.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Banlai Chak fell to the earth. The demon lord opened his eyes and looked up. Seeing the monkey and the asura, he grew angry as burning fire. He sprang up, brandished the victorious arrow, and chased in, storming to fight.

Then mighty Angkhot brandished the victorious sword like final fire and withdrew to meet the kumbhanda, waiting for him to come.

On Asuraphat's side, he shouted mockery: "Hey, Banlai Chak the yaksha. Yesterday you acted arrogant, boasting of courage and pride as you went to win victory against the younger brother of the Garuda-bearing lord, mighty enough to shake the earth. What are you thinking today? Why have you not marched the great army to fight? Are you afraid you will die, so you have come to hide your head here, making the younger brother of blessed Phra Chakri wait for a chance to fight? He therefore sent me, named Asuraphat, to hurry you as you consecrate your arrow. When you are finished, march your army and fight the mighty king."

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, heard and grew even angrier. He pointed at his face and shouted back: "Bah, you lowborn wretch, neither yaksha nor monkey. Shameless-faced creature, you can speak without shame in your heart. Your head will roll cut off by the hands of me, mighty in power." Having spoken, the demon lord leapt and bounded in, chasing them in battle.

Then the two mighty officers each fled and each chased in confusion, mocking and teasing the asura.

After that, both uncle and nephew sprang upward through the sky and returned to the golden pavilion together with mighty Phraya Nilaphat.

When they arrived, the three officers went in to attend, bowed their heads at the splendid lotus feet of Phra Chakri's younger brother, and reported the events of the battle.

Then powerful Bharata heard the three fierce soldiers. The righteous king was pleased because the result matched his thought. His face shone like the moon, and he gave royal command: "Your wisdom and mastery of power were not wasted. There is no one in the ten directions who can oppose you. It is fitting that you are soldiers of the bow-bearing Avatara. May your names and power spread and endure through all ages." Having spoken, he rose from the seat, beautiful as the king of gods in heaven, and walked gracefully into the golden pavilion.

Then, on Banlai Chak the yaksha's side, after his ascetic work and knowledge had been spoiled, the asura was angry as final fire. "Chih, these enemies, proud of their power, followed me here and broke me, killing the demon host and shattering the whole victorious army. Good, now we will see. I will erase their lives." Speaking so, he withdrew the great army and flew back to the royal city.

He descended at the city gate and met the yaksha scouts. Learning that Marakabin had lost his life by the hand of the mighty monkey, he was shocked as if Death had come and cut off his right arm. He stood rigid, stunned in his whole body. The asura stood silent, thinking: "Chih, these enemies are powerful. They can even divide my soldiers." Thinking this, they all went into the great royal hall.

When they arrived, they bowed their heads before the crest-jewel of Maliwan's royal city. Each reported the evil events, how the work and victory had been lost to the enemy.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha learned that his son had lost the rite and that Marakabin the asura had died. Shocked, he sat rigid and stunned in thought, sighing with heart and chest burning like fire. After remaining silent a while, he said: "The enemy can do whatever they think because that Phiphek the yaksha is their battle-astrologer, telling hidden tricks and deep counsel. The enemies have therefore grown bold and arrogant. This war is very heavy. The monkey and yaksha soldiers are brave. You, wise and skilled one: what plan will erase them?"

He mustered war-skilled soldiers, four fierce and brave divisions. Elephant lords rode battle elephants with victorious tusks, holding hooked glaives ready to cut. Horse lords rode noble horses, brandishing golden lances like turning discs. Chariot lords rode golden chariots, holding bows and testing for battle. Commanders hurried and arranged the troops, countless and dense as the sea. All held every kind of weapon, brandishing them in turmoil, officers and soldiers alike. Each displayed power and eager pride, looking strange as if they would overturn the earth. One division had three-tailed flags set in rows along the road.

He cleansed and bathed, refreshing his body, and wore perfumes blended with pollen. He put on lower garments with curved borders, and cloth patterned with kinnara figures and coiling scrolls. His fluttering panel was set with coral and coiled stems; his side panel had emerald and ruby insets. His upper garment was fine gold cloth with vine patterns; crystal armor chased with rubies shone over it. Direction-plates and crystal breast ornaments, three war-chains, dangling belts set with jewels, dragon-form bracelets, and armlets adorned him. Rings with diamond-studded housings sparkled; a jeweled crown with fluttering splendid panels, earrings, garlands, flowers, and bright ear-pieces ornamented him. Then he took up the Mekhasun discus, slung the Heraphot and the arrow-weapon, beautiful in bearing like his royal father, and walked to mount the golden shining chariot.

O royal chariot: its spokes and rims shone with nine gems. The tall yoke bore a three-tailed flag; the jeweled throne glittered splendidly. Golden arch-panels and scrollwork, golden tiers, and pearl-work were set with five tops and coral-gem disks, outshining the sun's palace. It was harnessed to two thousand royal lions, and Lothan held bow and arrows. Peacock parasols, fans, fly-whisks, sun-screens, round parasols, and golden royal screens moved about it. Gongs and drums sounded in loud ceremony; trumpets thundered deeply. Flags and banners were ordered by divisions, and shouting rose as they drove in rivalry onward.
