It follows Banlai Chak's renewed attack, his Mekhasun darkness and Heraphot-arrow capture of Shatrughna, Rahu guarding the captive in the sky, Bharata destroying the darkness and cloth-puppet, Hanuman's eagle-form rescue of Shatrughna, Rahu's execution after the failed guard duty, Banlai Chak's final march, and Bharata killing Banlai Chak with the Brahmastra.
Translation
The Death of Banlai Chak
[Slow]
Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, sat on the splendid throne in the midst of the monkey army, beautiful as the haloed moon floating through cloudless sky and ringed by stars in the first watch of night. He consulted on the royal business of war, how to erase the yaksha lineage, when he heard the army's voices shouting in a roar that shook the forest.

He gave royal command and asked Phiphek, the great astrologer: "Whose army is marching here? Is it Banlai Chak the kumbhanda?"

Then splendid Thao Thotsakhiriwong received the command and bowed. He divided the omen according to the time, both the Asakan and the Three-Eye signs, according to the yaksha observations. Seeing clearly as with divine eyes, the asura answered the royal word: "The army marching to war is Banlai Chak the yaksha. In today's omen the enemy seems very strong. When Your Majesty goes out to fight him, beware the demon lord; he will shoot arrows violently."

Then solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek the asura, and the sky-ruling lord spoke. He ordered the child of the Sun: "Prepare the brave monkey soldiers. We will march out to fight and destroy Banlai Chak the asura."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, bowed his head, received the royal word, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged the monkeys into a battle formation. The son of the Wind-born one was the vanguard, and the monkey soldiers rode leaping serows. Nilaphat was set as the flanking guard, with troops riding fierce rhinoceroses and displaying courage. The royal division of monkeys and demons rode tigers, eager and roaring. Indra's grandson served as the record-officer, with troops on lions and powerful bulls. The rear guard all rode deer, with battle-wise Chomphuphan as commander. The full fivefold army was complete, enough to overturn the earth. They brandished weapons like flashes of fire and stood arrayed, filling the ground.

Then radiant Bharata and the younger brother who shared his life went to bathe in the river.

The two kings cleansed and bathed in fragrant streams scented with flowers. Their lower garments were splendid with swan-vines. They wore different cloths, with fluttering panels and side-panels of coiled vines, emerald disks, and ruby insets. Their upper garments were gold cloth with golden vines; red-gold chest ornaments, direction-plates, chains, soft necklaces, gem-set armlets, bracelets, diamond rings with Garuda settings, crowns set with crystal and coral, nine-gem ear-pieces, flowers, and pearl garlands adorned them. The elder brother was beautiful like the Avatara; the younger beautiful like Phra Lak. Each belted on the sword and took up the bow. Splendid and awesome to all three worlds, they turned with the monkey and yaksha armies and mounted the chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were all emerald. Its axle-house and raised yoke curved delicately; tiered images encircled the floating throne. The pavilion, paneled houses, and pillars were cut with flanking ornament and hanging crests. Sparkling naga panels shone bright with gems, beautiful as a jeweled palace. It was harnessed to four lotus-colored horses. Shatrughna sat in front with joined hands. The charioteer drove swiftly as wind. High insignia, peacock parasols, and golden flags adorned it. Pipes, gongs, drums, and trumpets sounded together, with deep uproar everywhere. The soldiers were proud and eager, shouting as they hurried on their road.

Then Banlai Chak, demon lord skilled in war, stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the monkey army marching up. Angry and furious as flaring fire, intent on killing, he gave a lion-roar command and ordered the vanguard to storm in.

Then the mighty asura-yaksha bands each displayed power and chased into battle against the monkeys. Some stabbed, some cut, some shot arrows, entering in groups and swarming hand to hand, fighting without thought of life.

Then the monkey vanguard separated into crow-wings to meet them, striking the flanks from every side. The monkey soldiers snatched yaksha weapons, broke through by force, surged, and chased. They cut, stabbed, fought, and moved quickly, and the demon soldiers died senseless.

Then the yaksha captains and troop leaders saw their soldiers losing advantage and the monkeys pressing their attack. Each grew angry, stamped his foot, shouted in a voice like thunder, brandished weapons together, and drove the asuras back in. The demon troops fought hard, unafraid of death. Officers and soldiers broke through and chased, and the monkeys could not withstand their power; they broke, recoiled, and retreated in uproar.

Then brave Nilaphat, Asuraphat, mighty Nilek, and Nilanon saw the monkeys breaking in confusion. Each trembled with anger, brandished a shining sword flashing like firelight, and the four officers leapt and bounded into the middle of the kumbhandas. They cut and struck, and demons fell dead by their brave power. Victorious Asuraphat attacked and broke the chariot yoke. By strength like a discus he cut the charioteer in two. Striking left and right without pause, he killed all two thousand royal lions.

Then mighty Banlai Chak fell from the chariot, angry as final fire. The kumbhanda seized his arrow and shot.

Its sound was like a thunderbolt striking a mountain peak. It became shining flame scattered through the sky and burned the monkey host.

Then Shatrughna, brave younger brother, saw the yaksha weapon become burning fire. He drew an arrow and shot with the strength of his body.

Its sound was like Mount Meru being struck. It became rain and extinguished the fire until it vanished, then struck the demon army and felled them by the power of Narai's younger brother.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Banlai Chak saw the human arrow come to attack and demon soldiers dead everywhere. Angry as final fire, he drew the Anan Traiphop arrow, set it on the string, drew it by his power, and the asura released it.

Its sound was like the sky splitting. Weapons fell in heaps beyond counting, struck the forest-monkey army, and piled the dead over the earth.

Then radiant Bharata saw Banlai Chak the asura fighting against his splendid younger brother, shooting fierce arrows that became weapons falling from the sky and killing the monkey troops. The sky-ruling lord drew an arrow and released it.

The sound thundered in uproar. Arrows fell beyond counting. The whole victorious demon army died, and the weapons vanished at once.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, with chariot and army gone, burned with anger like fire consuming the sky. He seized the sharp-edged Mekhasun discus, which could subdue the ten directions, and hurled it into the cloud-field with the strength of the kumbhanda's body.

Its sound was like thunder, roaring and shaking all. It became cloud, thickly covering the sun, as dark and black as Lokanta hell. Then he drew out the Heraphot arrow and set it on the string, intent on killing. He drew it with victorious power, and the demon lord shot at once.

It became a thousand-headed Heraphot serpent, spitting poison, yet fearing the power of the splendid Brahmastra. It coiled around King Shatrughna, seized him, and carried him away up into the clouds.

Banlai Chak was delighted, glad, and happy. He clapped his hands and laughed. He took the headcloth from his body, and the asura recited a victorious spell.

When three recitations were complete, it became a brave cloth-puppet, like the demon lord's own body, holding a spear and leaping to win victory. When that was finished, he displayed power so earth and sky thundered and trembled, then flew after the Heraphot into the sky.

Now the tale turns to the brave asura Rahu, who served as eyes and hands for the lord of Maliwan city. He patrolled the air, proud and strong in power, commanding one crore of asura-kumbhanda troops as he went on patrol.

Seeing the powerful royal son binding and carrying the human in the sky, he rejoiced and came with his men to attend the lotus feet.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Banlai Chak, seeing wise Rahu, spoke to the demon lord: "Today I went to battle and bound the human with the splendid arrow. Guard him carefully. I am going to attend my father. If the man escapes, I will kill you and end your body." Having spoken, he descended from the clouds and returned to the kumbhanda realm.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at his royal father's feet and reported the whole battle from beginning to end. "Now your son has left that Rahu and the troops great and small to torment and display the human in the cloud-field. Tomorrow I will return to battle, seize the elder human, parade him through the heavenly levels, and then kill both together."

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat heard the beloved royal son as if he had gained heaven and underworld together. His four mouths laughed in gladness; his eight hands clapped loudly. He rose from the splendid jeweled throne, embraced his beloved son, and said: "Your power was not bestowed in vain. You are fit to rule subjects and the kingdom. Today you are very weary. Rest and refresh your body."

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, received the command with joined hands and returned to the asura dwelling.

Then the yaksha cloth-puppet brandished its spear, turning in uproar, and chased the monkeys to kill them. It stabbed left and swept right with skill, proud and swift as a lion, pressing onward in hand-to-hand combat without stopping, by the terrible power of the spell.

Then the monkey troops great and small fought for victory, but looking out they could not see the asura because darkness covered every direction. They could not think how to fight the yaksha. Some were wounded, some died senseless, and the monkeys were in wild disorder. They blindly stabbed and blindly seized one another in confusion, crashing into one another, officers and soldiers, and broke apart in defeat.

Then solar-line Bharata saw darkness thickly covering the sun, darker than night. He was greatly bewildered and turned to speak: "Listen, Phiphek, demon lord. What has caused this? The monkeys are in loud confusion and cannot know the reason. They are running apart and scattering. How has this happened?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha bowed his head and answered the royal word: "Now Banlai Chak the demon lord has hurled the sharp-edged Mekhasun discus to cover and block the fierce sun, so darkness has arisen. That base one then shot a trick-arrow, which became a Heraphot serpent, bound Shatrughna, and carried him into the cloud-petal of the sky. Then he tied up a cloth as a cloth-puppet to fight against the monkeys. He himself flew into the clouds after the Heraphot arrow and had Rahu and his patrol army guard him in the sky. Then he returned to the city; tomorrow he will march out again. I ask Your Majesty, lord of the three worlds, to release the mighty victorious arrow, destroy the powerful jeweled discus and the yaksha cloth-puppet, and then send the son of the Sun and the fierce monkey soldiers to kill Rahu and his army, end their lives, and rescue your beautiful younger brother at once."

Then radiant Bharata heard Phiphek the asura, and the king released the Brahmastra.

Its sound was like thunder. The world-system shook. It struck the discus and ground it to powder by great power. Then the victorious arrow became final fire and burned up the asura cloth-puppet by brave strength. The darkened sky and earth blazed and grew clear to the eye. All the monkeys who had died regained embodied life. Looking around and not seeing his younger brother, the sky-ruling lord nearly lost consciousness. Dragon-like tears brimmed and flooded his eyes. Grieving and burning as if seared by fire, he dropped the royal bow at once and lamented in sorrow.

"O alas, beloved brother, tender one who shares my life. Phra Narai commanded us to come together to subdue unrighteous fools, hoping to spread honor and make our fame known in every place until earth and sky come to an end. Yet in this work I have shamed his feet. Before, when you went out to fight Suriya Phop the yaksha, you were struck by the spear and nearly died. From that day on I did not trust the war. This time I came out to fight with you; was it right that I could not help you? All the strength of my mighty power is wasted. Who will count me a man? It is disgrace and shame before the hosts of the three worlds: they will say I fought fiercely but grossly and lost my younger brother twice. O alas, companion in hardship. I have never been parted from you, younger brother. Now you have vanished from my eyes." So he lamented in grief, senseless.

When his grief had quieted and faded, splendid Narai's younger brother gave royal command to the monkeys Sukhrip, Hanuman, Angkhot, grandson of Amarin, and wise Nilaphat: "You four are all seasoned warriors. Hurry into the upper sky. Kill the great patrol troops and rescue my younger brother, who shares my heart. Bring him back to me this moment."

Then the four victorious soldiers bowed their heads, received the royal word, raised joined hands, and flew upward together.

They hurried through the air, swift as mighty Garuda. Seeing the victorious younger brother bound by the demon arrow in the clouds, with asura-kumbhanda bands packed around him in guard, the mighty son of Phra Phai transformed his body at once.

In a moment, by power, he became a great lord of eagles. Once transformed, they all entered to win victory over the asura army.

The bird swooped, pecked the Heraphot, and struck it, cutting its body apart by brave war-strength. Mighty Sukhrip received the king's body in time. Angkhot and Nilaphat, the two soldiers, chased and destroyed the yaksha host. They fell dead over the earth by that vast power.

Then brave-hearted Rahu saw the proud bird and monkeys swooping and killing the demon troops. Angry, shaking, the kumbhanda displayed courage, brandished his splendid club, and leapt in to fight.

He rushed in to seize Shatrughna by fierce yaksha power. They turned and grappled in uproar amid the sky.

Then the son of the Sun, skilled in war, fought and cut with one hand, meeting and parrying back and forth.

The three other officers grew angry and ground their teeth. They crowded in, seized the yaksha, kicked and stabbed Rahu the asura, and by their power he fell from the clouds.

When that was done, the son of Phra Phai changed back into splendid monkey form, bowed with joined hands, and invited the younger brother of the lord of the three worlds to sit on his shoulder like mighty Garuda, the great vehicle that bears Narai through the sky. Beautiful was the monkey lord, son of the Wind; beautiful was brave Shatrughna. Indra's grandson, the son of the Sun, and mighty Nilaphat followed.

When they arrived, they set Shatrughna down beside the supreme elder brother. The four officers reported all the affair, how they had killed the asuras.

Then radiant Bharata saw his younger brother and rejoiced. The king embraced him and said in beautiful speech: "You whose mighty power shakes the earth, whose force can subdue the three realms, why did you not guard your body? You stayed still and let the Heraphot arrow bind you and carry you into the sky. Elder brother grieved terribly, nearly to the end of life."

Then wise and brave Shatrughna heard his elder brother's command, bowed at the lotus feet, and replied: "When the Heraphot arrow came, younger brother did not know himself in time, because darkness had covered the dawn-light. That is how it carried me away. Before, when I went out to fight Suriya Phop the yaksha, I was struck by the spear and fell to the earth; elder brother cured me in time. Since Your Majesty has saved me twice, my life has not ended. The merit of my elder brother is beyond counting."

Then solar-line Bharata heard his splendid younger brother, and the sky-ruling lord was joyful. He gave command praising the four soldiers: "It was no wasted labor that you served at Phra Chakri's feet. Your power is surpassing and noble. Each of you four is wise, like a commander of the discus lord. You rescued my brother from the yaksha's hand. Your merit is vast beyond measure." Having spoken, he ordered the monkey armies to withdraw. Their shouts shook the earth as they returned to the victory pavilion.

Then Rahu, the great soldier, sore and distressed, nearly dead, went into the royal city.

When he arrived, he bowed at the lotus feet of Banlai Chak the yaksha and reported: "Now an eagle and three monkeys came after us. They suddenly stormed in to fight and struck the yaksha troops. One crore of them lost their lives; only your servant remained to fight. They crowded around, seized the human, and escaped with him. The penalty reaches my life. May the king have mercy."

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, heard and was angry as fire. The asura stamped his foot. His hand seized his sword; grinding his teeth, he brandished it. "Hey Rahu the asura, your mouth boasted courage but your heart did not match it. It was only three little vile monkeys; was it right to fear them and not fight? You come back telling all this as an excuse. I will kill you and end your life." Speaking so, he ordered the executioners and the four royal officers: "Keep Rahu the asura under guard and follow me to the royal hall." Having spoken, he descended from the jeweled throne, bright and shining, and walked gracefully; the kumbhanda went up to attend his father.

When he arrived, he bowed his head at the feet of the crest-jewel lord of the world and reported everything from beginning to end, recounting it all: "Your son is greatly angry at Rahu. He did not love his lord; he feared those animals more than the lotus feet of the sky-ruling lord who raised and maintained him."

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat heard and grew angry as final fire. The kumbhanda roared in a mighty voice: "Bah, Rahu the yaksha. I raised you as a great soldier. Why did you flee from the enemy, vile wretch?" Having spoken, he gave a lion-roar command: "Hey, four executioners, take Rahu the asura, cut off his head, and stake it for display."

Then the brave executioners bowed their heads, received the royal order, and bound the patrol demon lord by the neck.

The herald led before them beating a gong and crying through the great streets. When they had gone around the victory city palace, they cut off his head and staked it according to command.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha kept thinking about how to kill the enemy. War had gained advantage yet no victory. His heart hurt as if pierced by an arrow. His body burned and remained poisoned because he had been outthought and defeated by the enemy. He gave royal command: "Look, Banlai Chak the yaksha. Since the war has become like this, what plan will you use to fight?"

Then thoughtful Banlai Chak bowed at the feet and replied: "May the king have mercy. Though the war against the humans has fierce and brave power, your son, who serves beneath your feet, is counted a hardened man. Tomorrow I will take leave at the lotus feet and march with the fourfold army. I will attack, fight, and kill them until all lives are ended." Having spoken, he paid homage, took leave of his splendid royal father, and walked gracefully back to the shining jeweled palace.

When he arrived, he gave command to the great ministers: "Muster the great army. I will march out to fight."

Then the brave great minister bowed his head, received the command, and the demon lord hurried out.

They mustered horses, chariots, elephants, and foot-soldiers, selecting only brave and powerful warriors. Some had naga heads and kumbhanda bodies. Some had yaksha bodies and arms but fish faces that quivered. One division had lion faces with bared teeth and asura-shaped bodies. One division had crow heads and bear bodies, arms, and feet. One division had tiger faces and monkey bodies. All held spears, swords, firearms, iron hammers, crossbows, and arrows, brandishing and displaying their arms, arranged in layers along the road.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, lay on the splendid seat and reflected: "This war with the humans is powerful; they fight boldly with sacred arrows. Their soldiers too have power, useful as mind and heart desire. I have gone out twice, and countless troops have died. Tomorrow I will march out to gain victory, but the burden on my heart is beyond measure." He turned restlessly and did not sleep until the sun rose above the mountain peak. Then he left the sleeping chamber and went to the bathing place.

Crystal water was scattered like rain. He wore perfume mixed with divine pollen. His lower garment was splendid with swan-vines; his cloth had kinnara borders around the waist. His fluttering panel had coral disks and coiled stems; his side panel was inset with emerald and ruby. His upper garment was crystal armor with chain ornaments and splendid chestwork. Cat's-eye armlets, bracelets set with pearl-disks, brilliant diamond rings, a splendid jeweled crown, and ear-pieces adorned him. He hung garlands and flowers, and his hand grasped bow and arrow. Beautiful as mighty Ramasun, he walked to mount the victory chariot.

O war-chariot: its deep wheels and rims were splendid. The axle-house and raised yoke curved gracefully, with tiered crestwork and a golden throne. It was harnessed to two thousand royal lions, roaring loudly. Lothan the charioteer held a club and drove swiftly as wind. Royal umbrellas, fly-whisks, flags, and streaming banners adorned it. The soldiers crowded densely, brandishing weapons like fire. Gongs and drums sounded loudly; the troops shouted until the earth shook. He hurried the horse, chariot, and elephant host along the forest road.

When he reached the battlefield, he halted the army divisions and set them by groups, waiting to fight the enemy.

Then radiant Bharata sat on the jeweled throne in the golden victory pavilion, amid the armies, yakshas and monkeys great and small, all crouched in attendance like stars surrounding the moon among clouds. They consulted on how to erase the rude, unrighteous, jealous enemy, when a shout in uproar shook the belly of Mayura Mountain.

He spoke sweet words, asking Phiphek the yaksha: "This army marching today: which asura is it?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command and read the omen according to the watch and hour: both Asakan and Three-Eye, and he checked the breath-wind signs. Seeing clearly, without doubt in his soul, as if with divine eyes, he bowed and reported to the splendid solar-line king: "The asura-kumbhanda army that has marched to fight is Banlai Chak the asura. Today his brave strength will end. He has come out with arrogant heart, and the demon lord will lose his life."

Then splendid solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek and rejoiced. He gave royal command to the son of the Sun: "You, brave and mighty one, arrange the great army. We will go erase that unrighteous asura."

Then mighty Sukhrip received the command of the divine-line king, bowed in homage, and hurried away.

He arranged a battle formation, selecting only proud soldiers skilled in war. Wherever they entered, no one could withstand their hands; they were like a fierce royal lion. Brave and skilled in battle, they could plunder a heavenly city. Each one could fight a thousand soldiers; all were eager to enter combat. Monkey soldiers and yaksha soldiers mingled, packed thick as a counted ocean. They displayed terrible power, brandishing weapons like flaring fire, intent on erasing the enemy. Their power seemed enough to overturn the earth, and officers and soldiers made a vast noise while they waited for Narai's younger brother to march.

Then solar-line Bharata and his younger brother Shatrughna went to the bathing place.

Their lower garments had curved borders with dragon figures playing in the shining water. Their green cloths had naga and kinnara borders. Each wore fluttering panel and side panel, with vines interwoven with nine gems. Their upper garments were purple and shining; chest ornaments, chain necklaces, and armlets adorned them. Naga-shaped armlets, ruby bracelets, pearl insets, diamond rings in Garuda settings, jeweled crowns, garlands, and flowers shone. Each held a royal arrow, beautiful as sun and moon, and walked to mount the splendid chariot.

Red paneled pillars, lion branches, golden scrollwork, pavilion supports, and hanging crests shone with diamond and red-gold light. It was harnessed to royal horses white as conches, with red mouths and feet like red lotuses. The charioteer drove them urgently into battle. Shatrughna sat with bowed joined hands. Royal umbrellas and fly-whisks gleamed bright; peacock parasols, fans, and fly-whisks waved; curved trumpets, gongs, and drums sounded loudly. Yakshas and monkey lords, the brave army, were proud and eager for war. Their deep shout shook everything as they drove quickly onward.

When they arrived, they saw the kumbhanda army set firmly along the great road, with Banlai Chak standing in the victorious chariot amid the asura host. Bharata gave royal command to the splendid child of Phra Kal, ordering him to drive the great army in to attack the asura forces.

Then mighty Nilaphat received the king's command and drove the army in to fight.

The monkey bands attacked the yaksha army, breaking through by brave force. They chased, stormed, surged, cut, and stabbed the demon bands in confusion.

Then the asura troops great and small separated swiftly to meet them, fighting for victory without lowering their hands. Each hurled weapons, fired guns, and shot arrows. In groups and divisions they fought, fleeing and chasing in tangled combat.

Then mighty Nilaphat saw the monkeys striking the kumbhanda army but held back, not breaking it as he desired. Angry and furious, he stamped his foot until the earth thundered and trembled. Brandishing his diamond trident, he flew into the middle of the soldiers, attacking and fighting. He struck left and right in turmoil, turning in tangled combat. Alone he fought a hundred thousand yakshas, and the demon troops broke and died senseless.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, saw the monkeys attacking in close combat and the asuras breaking apart. Angry as final fire, he ground his teeth, seized the discus, raised it, aimed to destroy life, and hurled it straight.

It blazed like the sun. The sky shook and thundered. It struck the forest-monkey soldiers, who died broken and piled together.

Then solar-line Bharata saw the demon lord hurl the discus in battle and the troops die senseless. He drew the Agni-Wat arrow onto the string, beautiful like splendid Narai. Drawing it by his power, the king released it.

Its sound was like the wind of time. It struck the discus, which shattered and could not endure. Demon soldiers' lives ended, strewn over the whole earth.

Then Banlai Chak, solar-line yaksha, saw the human's powerful arrow erase his discus-weapon and break it to pieces. He drew the sacred arrow, set it on the string, aimed to kill, drew it with victorious strength, and shot at once.

Its sound was like thunder roaring over splendid Himavan. It became a flame of fire burning around the monkey army.

Then the brave younger brother of the Avatara saw mighty Banlai Chak shoot an arrow that became flame, hot and bright as final fire, which the brave monkey soldiers could not endure. He drew the terrible Phlai Wat arrow, set it on the string, and shot by his power.

Its sound was like thunder, roaring as far as Dusit. It became a dark rain over every direction and at once extinguished the poison-fire. Then it struck the fourfold army, destroyed all the yaksha soldiers, and hit the asura's royal chariot too, turning it to ash and dust by its power.

Then the son of the four-faced yaksha king, with chariot and ten armies gone, grew angry as final fire. Alone, not thinking of his life, he brandished the sacred arrow and displayed courage. Stamping, roaring, and leaping, the demon lord jumped onto the royal chariot. He turned and fought back and forth with fierce strength, striking left and right without pause, hoping to break the splendid chariot.

Then the two younger brothers of Narai, brave in war, saw the yaksha boldly attack. They struck him with their bow-staves so he flew away. Both descended from the royal chariot, each proud and bold, and pressed in to attack, striking again and again by great power without pause.

Then Banlai Chak, brave demon lord, received, guarded, and parried back and forth with power, fighting fiercely. The three grappled in confusion, stubborn and enduring, not retreating. Each struck, parried, and hit; neither side slackened.

Then solar-line Bharata stepped on the kumbhanda's knee and pulled his head, fighting with powerful strength. The noble younger lord Shatrughna seized the yaksha's arrow-weapon. Bharata kicked the asura again with his foot, and the asura staggered and reeled away.

Then both lords drew their sacred arrows, mighty enough to shake the earth, set them on the string, drew swiftly, and released them at once.

Their sound was like a piercing wind, shaking the whole sky and every region. They struck Banlai Chak all over his body, and he fell to the earth.

Then the son of the eight-handed yaksha king, struck by arrows and hurt over his whole body, lay thinking: "These human brothers are powerful. Their arrow-weapons have no equal. If I stay to win victory, how will my life survive? Better to flee into the clouds and escape death." Thinking this, he strengthened his heart, ground his teeth, and the kumbhanda recited a splendid spell.

By the power of his knowledge and mantra, both his body and shadow vanished. The arrows slipped out of his body, and fearing death he flew away swiftly.

When he reached the middle of the sky, he saw countless overlapping cloud-petals. The demon lord went straight in and hid inside the clouds.

Then solar-line Bharata looked and no longer saw the asura. The sky-ruling lord was greatly bewildered and asked Thao Thotsakhiriwong: "Banlai Chak the asura was fighting before my face and has vanished. What has the demon lord done?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek heard the king's command, bowed, and answered: "Banlai Chak has reached the end of thought and the end of power for winning victory. Fearing Your Majesty's force, he fled upward and hid in the clouds. I ask Your Majesty to take the Brahmastra and kill him, cutting off the yaksha's head and ending his life by the king's power."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard the younger brother of the twenty-armed king. He drew the powerful Brahmastra, set it on the string, drew and raised it, aiming to erase the yaksha's life. Beautiful like blessed Phra Chakri, the king released it to attack.

Even Mount Meru bent, and every place shook and roared. It struck Banlai Chak the demon lord; his life ended, and his severed head fell down.
