Good Works Translation from Thai
This is the ninety-seventh สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows the gods celebrating Banlai Chak's death, Cakkrawat and the royal household mourning and cremating Banlai Chak, Cakkrawat's own battle against Bharata and Shatrughna, Cakkrawat's withdrawal after healing his wounds, Nonyupak abandoning his long rite on Mount Maran after ominous signs, and Shatrughna being sent to face Nonyupak with Bharata's Brahmastra.

Cakkrawat Mourns, Then Nonyupak Marches

Now the tale tells of the gods in every direction and all the beautiful apsarases. Seeing the younger brother of the four-armed Phra Chakra kill Banlai Chak the asura, ending his life by the arrow's light, each one rejoiced steadily. They opened jeweled windows in every palace, leaned out smiling with bright faces, laughed happily, and clapped until the sound rang out. They scattered popped rice and golden flowers, and streams of divine fragrance descended. Some played songs and offered voices, the sound filling the sky. All heavenly women and gods gave victory-blessings to the younger brother.

Then the two younger brothers of Narai, after killing the kumbhanda, saw the heavenly people scatter flower-garlands. They lay strewn over the earth, spreading sweet fragrance. The lords chose and admired the blossoms, smelling the flowers in great delight. The monkey and yaksha troops snatched up divine flowers, some tucking them in their hair, some setting them behind their ears; every soldier rejoiced. When evening came and the sun bent behind the mountain, the lords mounted the jeweled chariot and ordered the great army to withdraw. The warriors shouted in thunder, shaking the earth, and hurried along the forest road back to the golden pavilion.

Then the yaksha scouts saw Banlai Chak the asura die by the enemy's hand, and all the horse, chariot, elephant, and foot divisions end completely. In fear, as if they would sink into the earth, the asuras went into the city.

When they arrived, they bowed and reported to the solar-line king, Cakkrawat the yaksha: "The royal son went out to fight, and now he has gone to heaven. Horse, chariot, elephant, and foot troops are all gone; not one remains." They reported everything from beginning to end, according to the events they had seen.

Then the four-faced yaksha king learned that his son had died by the enemy's powerful arrow. Shocked as if a thunderbolt had struck the crown of his head, poison and burning pain multiplied and pierced to his heart. Tears flowed from all eight eyes. In great suffering, grief, love, and loss, he wept and lamented.

One mouth cried: "O my son, I never thought your life would end. You were mighty as final fire and went to battle, even capturing the human." A second mouth cried: "O, because we trusted that Rahu the yaksha, the enemy survived and came back to destroy my jewel." A third mouth cried: "O wise one, you were careless because you thought your strength was brave; you lost advantage to the vile enemy as if you were no true warrior." A fourth mouth cried: "O, you have vanished like the moon disappearing behind the mountain. Those left behind will only grieve, their suffering multiplied without end. Now who will your father have to win victory against these deluded humans?" The four mouths lamented as if his own life would end.

When he gradually regained awareness, the asura thought of his son and gave royal command to the great yaksha ministers: "Muster the fighting army. I will go receive the body of Banlai Chak, my beloved royal son, and bring it into the splendid palace."

Then wise and brave Supinsan bowed his head, received the royal order, and the demon lord hurried out.

He arranged a battle formation by proper divisions, left and right, and set them along the road, completed according to the asura's command.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha brought the chief royal queen and mounted the shining jeweled chariot. He ordered the hundred thousand brave soldiers, the great army formation, to move from the victory city gate under moonlight in the sky. Brightness spread through the air, radiant and clear, while the soldiers hurried along the mountain foot.

When they reached the battlefield, they saw asura-yaksha corpses scattered over the earth. The asura descended from the jeweled chariot with the beautiful chief queen. The scout troop led them forward, winding between the corpses while they looked around. They saw the royal son's body, his head cut off and lying by the great road. The two royals hurried in, embraced the body, and lamented in grief.

The father said: "O jewel of my eyes, mighty enough to subdue every region, was it right that your life ended, rolling on the earth?" The mother said: "O beloved son, you lie dead, pitiful and helpless, your head severed and rolling in the dirt like a lowborn wretch." The father said: "I intended you to rule subjects and kingdom, continue the solar-line yaksha clan, and uphold this city." The mother said: "Your elder brother died, and I meant to entrust my funeral to you; was it right that you too lost your life and fled your mother to heaven?" The attendants cried: "O royal son, your grace once protected our heads, nourished us, gave us wealth, and instructed us in royal service. From now on every attendant will suffer in distress." The ministers cried: "O young prince, you once served beneath the supreme king's feet. Now your life is gone; toward whom shall we turn?" Alas, the jeweled lamp is extinguished and gives no more light. The two royals, ministers, and palace women grieved without awareness.

When the moon bent behind the mountain and they recovered from grief, he gave royal command to invite the royal son's body up onto the jeweled pearl chariot and withdraw the demon army back into the royal city of Maliwan.

When they arrived, he had a jeweled coffin, finished with shining ninefold gold, receive the beloved kumbhanda son's body. He adorned it with splendid gold and set it in the front palace court on a bright splendid throne. He ordered music to sound, then invited the queen to light the fire.

Then the solar-line clan great and small, and all the palace women, lamented in longing. Some held gold and silver incense and candles, flowers, powders, sandalwood, and eaglewood. Begging forgiveness of the asura, they made offerings and lit the fire together.

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat, after the cremation of the beloved son who shared his life, when the sun had set behind Mount Yukhonthon, brought the palace women and the queen beloved of his heart and walked up to the jeweled palace.

He reclined on the ninefold-gold couch, lying in sorrow. He sighed again and again, reflecting on the royal enemies: "O my heart, my two sons went out to battle and both lost their lives. I have also lost the minister Marakabin. This time I see no one else with fierce power able to kill the humans and monkeys. Necessarily I myself must march out and win victory against the enemies." He tossed restlessly and could not sleep until golden light shone and the sun rose above Mount Yukhonthon. Then he bathed, dressed in nine-gem splendor, left the jeweled chamber, and went to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol. With priests and ministers present, the kumbhanda gave royal command: "Prepare the fourfold army, the hundred thousand brave soldiers. I myself will go out and fight, and destroy the two humans."

Then Supinsan, the great minister, received the command of the lord of the three worlds, bowed in homage, and hurried out.

He arranged a fourfold battle formation, selecting only proud and brave men. Foot-soldiers carried matchlock guns, with maces at the belt and bullets stored. Horse-soldiers rode proud horses, brandishing golden lances like turning discs. Chariot-soldiers stood firm in chariots, each holding a bow and testing his hand. Elephant-soldiers rode six-tusked elephants, rutting, fierce, and battle-wise, carrying hooks and spears and brandishing them to display power. They entered divisions by troop and army formation, densely packed as the Akaniṭṭha heaven, arrayed toward every direction according to the asura's decree.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, when the army was arranged, went to bathe.

Golden lotuses were scattered cleanly like divine water poured by the lord of gods. He applied royal perfume, adorning his body with heart-delighting fragrance. His lower cloth had broken-gold mirror panels and great gem-set scrolls. His shining golden garment had jeweled side and fluttering panels. His upper garment was interwoven gold cloth; diamond armor shone like fireflies. Direction-plates, chest ornaments with floating jewels, chains, bracelets, serpent-shaped armlets, diamond rings, a priceless sky-bright crown, and full ornaments adorned him. He held divine weapons in all eight hands, brandishing glittering light, and the demon lord left the radiant jeweled platform to mount the victorious chariot.

O royal war-chariot, deep beyond the three worlds: its wheels and rims were all cut crystal, its raised yoke brilliant with coral. The jeweled throne, pictured panels, paneled pillars, Brahma arrows, and splendid pavilion floated high in the air, beautiful to the eye. It was harnessed to two thousand lion-beasts. Lothan held a raised lance and drove swiftly, fast as wind, with the victory flag leading the army. High insignia and jeweled screens filled the road in ordered ranks. Pipes, gongs, and drums sounded in uproar, and the host pressed in crowds. The warriors shouted in chaos, wheels struck the earth until it shook, and dust and smoke darkened the air as he hurried the troops onward.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set the great formation firmly on the victorious battlefield, waiting for the time to fight.

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, lay on the splendid seat in secure delight. Stars and moon slipped from the sky; the sun's light neared dawn. The wind blew softly, carrying the fragrance of flowers. Bees and honey-bees flew thickly, drinking flower pollen. The voices of birds and jungle-fowl sounded pleasantly through the forest.

He woke, bathed, and dressed, his face shining like the moon, and with the younger brother who shared his heart went out among the army.

Then he heard a resonant sound shaking Mayura Mountain. He asked Phiphek the asura: "Whose army has marched here today?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard the royal command and read the omen. Skilled in the three Vedas, observing without error, he knew clearly by swift wisdom, bowed, and answered: "The army marching out is not a solar-line son. It is Thao Cakkrawat the asura himself, crest-jewel of Maliwan city."

Then solar-line Bharata heard the younger brother of Thotsakan and gave command: "Listen, mighty Sukhrip. Arrange the brave army. We will march out to fight and destroy the lord of great Maliwan."

Then thoughtful Sukhrip bowed his head, received the king's command, paid homage, and hurried out.

He arranged a brave Garuda formation. The child of Phra Kal was the bird's head. Keyura and Mayura were the two eyes; Pingkhala was the bird's mouth. The monkey lord Nilakhan was the Garuda's neck. The right wing was Wisantrawi; the left wing was the monkey Dviphat. Surasen and Surakan were the two feet, standing ready to spring. The royal army was the jeweled Garuda's body, and battle-wise Asuraphat was the tail. Yakshas, monkeys, and troops were arrayed as claws and feathers alternating. Sukhrip, Hanuman, and Phiphek were in the king's own army.

Then radiant Bharata and the younger brother who shared his life went to the bathing place.

[Thon]
The two kings cleansed and bathed and wore perfume scented with pollen. Bharata wore curved golden-vine lower cloth and fig-colored garment; the younger brother wore dark-green cloth with swan-scroll borders. Side panels, fluttering panels, and garments were encircled with black-ground ornaments. Chains, direction-plates, chest ornaments, emerald bracelets, yellow-gem armlets, diamond rings, splendid crowns, coral ear-pieces, and golden garlands adorned them. The elder brother was beautiful like the four-armed lord; the younger brother stood noble like Phra Lak. Each slung on the arrow-weapon, took a shining powerful sword, and walked to mount the splendid chariot.

O jeweled chariot: it was all pearl-disks, with coral-carved spokes and rims, vine scrolls, and bird patterns. The axle-house and raised yoke were graceful; the floating throne bore lotus-turned crestwork. The topwork was set with mirrors and rows of crest panels, beautiful like a palace in the sixteen heavens. It was harnessed to noble horses; the charioteer drove skillfully, swift as cutting wind. The younger brother sat in front, bowing at the lotus feet. Sun-screens, peacock parasols, fans, victory flags, side-flags, drums, cymbals, pipes, gongs, and bells sounded in uproar. Yakshas and monkeys shouted until the world shook. Dust darkened the upper sky as they hurried in contest toward the field.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha stood in his chariot amid the army and saw the opposing host marching from far away. The monkey troops were beyond counting, and the two humans rode in the victorious royal chariot, beautiful in form and bearing. The more he looked, the more he thought of his beloved sons. The yaksha king grew furious, stamped his foot, ground his teeth, and ordered the army to attack.

Then mighty Supinsan received the command and drove the army in to attack the forest-monkeys.

Then the demon soldiers, great and small, shouted and surged in to win victory, storming and chasing without regard for themselves. They shot, thrust, stabbed, and cut face to face, reinforcing the flanks by divisions. Gun-smoke darkened the field, and tumult spread over the earth.

Then the brave monkey troops split to meet and strike the demons, fighting in turmoil. Some slapped, bit, wrestled, and battered. Heads and bodies were cut apart beyond counting. The asuras broke throughout the victorious army, and the monkeys pressed the fight again.

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat saw the monkeys pressing forward and the kumbhandas scattering in defeat. Angry, he stamped his foot, urged the royal chariot forward, and with eight hands brandished weapons as he chased and killed the monkeys. He hurled, stabbed, and cut in confusion, brave and skilled in war. The monkey soldiers died in heaps by his mighty power. Then he gave a lion-roar proclamation, echoing through sky and earth: "Hey, you two humans, small as web-flies, why have you acted arrogantly? You have joined that traitor Phiphek to plunder the royal city of Maliwan, not knowing that you and all your soldiers will lose life."

Then solar-line Bharata heard and answered: "Hey, fierce-hearted asura. Why do you call Phiphek at fault? You yourself are corrupt and deluded, joining a little child no larger than a fly and destroying righteous custom. We sent you a letter and spoke to you with mercy, intending to spare your life, yet you answered with arrogance. You are only four-faced and eight-handed; do not boast of brave power. Your two dead sons: what has become of them, demon lord?"

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat heard and was choked with anger in his soul. He answered: "As for your elder brother named Rama, he has no shame, roaming to plunder the wealth of every victory city like a forest bandit, not a king. He marches with vile animal forest monkeys. In the three worlds, who will count that as good? I bear power enough to subdue every region of the sky. Do not imagine you will gain my city. I will destroy the whole army so that not one returns. Your flesh and blood will feed wild dogs, crows, and vultures."

Then solar-line Bharata, bearer of the bow, heard and answered the asura: "Hey, dark cruel one. My powerful elder brother is splendid Phra Narai himself. He stands in righteous custom and does not delight in anyone's wealth. If someone is truthful and upright, the lord does not kill that life. In all the three worlds there is none who can resist his power. What of Maliwan city? It is as if it already lies in his hand. Do not keep speaking arrogant words. Soon you will see his power."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard and grew angry as fire. The asura cried back: "Hey, human, do not be so proud. I do not fear your power." Having spoken, he drew the victorious arrow, set it on the string, and shot by his strength.

Its sound was like wind and rain. Darkness covered the ten directions. It struck the monkey army, and they died scattered over the earth.

Then radiant Bharata saw the yaksha arrow strike the army. The king released the Phlai Wat arrow.

It thundered through every direction, becoming poison-arrows in countless numbers. It killed the demon troops, and the dead forest-monkeys came back to life.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw the human shoot a powerful arrow that killed the asura army. Angry as flaring fire, intent on killing, the demon lord seized the splendid jeweled discus and hurled it at once.

Its sound was like the wind at the end of time. It became a brilliant shining flame, circling the chariot of Phra Chakri's younger brother, hot as final fire.

Then solar-line Bharata saw Cakkrawat's discus become final fire around the victorious chariot. He seized the Agni-Wat arrow, powerful enough to shake the earth, set it on the string, drew quickly, and shot to destroy the asura's discus.

It struck mighty Thao Cakkrawat, who fell from the royal chariot, then became a thousand streams of rain and immediately extinguished the fierce fire.

Then the four-faced yaksha king, struck by the arrow and fallen to the earth, had no wound on his body. Angry, he sprang up and stood firm, grinding his teeth, shooting and displaying courage. He brandished weapons, surged forward, and by power entered to break the splendid chariot.

Then solar-line Bharata and his younger brother Shatrughna descended from the chariot at once. Each held the arrow-weapon and pursued the yaksha in battle, pressing and grappling in close combat, chasing and retreating by turns.

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat fought alone in close combat, not thinking of life. Four faces guarded and parried bow-staves; four hands struck left and swept right. They turned and grappled in uproar, each brave, each bold in battle.

Then the two kings, whose power outshone the sun, met, guarded, and stood in combat. Bharata rushed in and stepped on the right knee; the younger brother stepped on the yaksha's waist. They wheeled and changed stances in battle, striking the asura so he staggered. The elder brother seized the royal arrow given by Phra Narai himself, set it on the string, drew swiftly, and shot again to strike the asura.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha was hurt and wounded over his whole body, nearly losing life. Hungry, weak, weary, with heavy breast and heart, he forced his body to stand, raised joined hands, and recited a splendid spell.

When three recitations were complete, he stroked downward. The pain over his whole body vanished; the arrows moved and slipped out of his body, and the wounds did not sting as much as a fiber. When the sun bent to set and went down behind the mountain ridge, he ordered the great army to withdraw and return to the victory city.

Then radiant Bharata, when Thao Cakkrawat the asura had withdrawn the army back into the city, mounted the royal chariot with brave Shatrughna and ordered the soldiers to withdraw, returning to the pavilion.

Now the tale turns to Nonyupak the yaksha, royal younger brother of mighty Banlai Chak. He had taken leave of his royal kumbhanda father and gone to splendid Mount Maran. From the age of ten, he had performed a rite, concentrating his heart. He endured hunger and hardship and never slackened in effort, hoping the three lords of the worlds would show mercy and grant divine weapons of fierce power. But his wish had not been fulfilled, even when he was past one hundred years old. Then strange omens arose: burning agitation filled his mind and would not leave. He became scattered, hot, and restless, unable to steady his body or hold awareness. Blood fell before his face. Seeing it, the asura wondered: "Surely my royal father or royal mother has suffered some harmful event. I must go see clearly." Thinking this, he flew into the sky and returned to the asura city.

When he arrived, he descended from the air, mounted the shining jeweled palace, and bowed at the feet of his royal mother in the splendid jeweled chamber.

Then Nang Watchanisut, deepest in compassion, saw the royal son and lamented in grief.

"O Nonyupak, child of your mother, tender one, crest-jewel of my heart. Now brave humans have marched here to fight and trouble us. Your two elder brothers went out to battle and their lives ended. Yesterday your royal father marched the army out, but he gained no victory over the enemy." As she spoke, she embraced her son and wept as if life would end.

Then wise and brave Nonyupak learned that his elder brothers had perished by the enemy's hand. Shocked as if Death had struck the crown of his head, he pressed his face to his mother's feet and lamented in grief.

"O my mother, I did not know war had come to kill. Troubled by the strange omen I saw, your son left the rite and came to attend the lotus feet of his mother and royal father. Now the enemy has come to fight, and both my elder brothers have died. Your son asks to go out to battle, to destroy the human enemies, to avenge them to my heart's content, and not leave even one alive."

Then loving Nang Watchanisut heard the royal son's words and at once forbade him: "Nonyupak, my beloved child, tender one, crest-jewel of my heart, do not be proud and bold, thinking yourself excellent enough to go fight for victory. Both your elder brothers had power that shook sky and earth and possessed terrible divine weapons, yet they died by the enemy's hand. Morning and evening your mother does nothing but grieve; tears flow as blood. I suffer and sorrow constantly, thinking of them without end. Now that I have seen your face, my grief is somewhat eased. I meant to entrust my life to you, my rice-spirit child. Think carefully."

Then Nonyupak, solar-line yaksha, heard his royal mother. Raising joined hands, he bowed and answered: "To be born a solar-line king: how could one fear war? Your son is a noble male and has no attachment to life. Even if I die, I will leave my honor and fame known in days to come." Having spoken, he paid homage, took leave, and went up to the royal hall.

When he arrived, he embraced the lotus feet of his splendid royal father, pressed his face there in grief, and the kumbhanda sobbed without speaking.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw Nonyupak the asura come grieving and sobbing. He wrapped him in an embrace and said: "Apple of my eye, what is this? You went to establish a heart-concentrating rite on Mount Maran, suffering terrible hardship for a hundred years. Have you accomplished your wish, or why have you abandoned your ascetic rite and come?"

Then Nonyupak, solar-line yaksha, sobbed as he answered the command: "Your son went away from your feet to perform the rite, but it did not match my thought; I could not steadily concentrate the mind. Restless heat filled my heart, and a great omen arose. I came hoping to attend the feet of my splendid royal father. My royal mother told me the enemies had come to fight and that both my elder brothers had died. The shame and anger are beyond measure. I ask to march the army out to battle, kill the two humans and the monkey host who arrogantly boast of power, and make them die crushed by my hands. Father, do not be displeased beneath your feet."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard his beloved son speak as if heavenly nectar had healed his heart. His four mouths laughed happily, and his eight hands clapped until all trembled. He embraced the royal son: "You are your father's very heart. It was not wasted that you were born in the solar line: proud, brave, and skilled in war, fit to be crest-jewel of the people in Maliwan city. Since you will go out to fight the two splendid humans, may you gain victory over the royal enemy by this blessing your father grants." Having spoken, he gave royal command to the great demon ministers: "Arrange the great army for my mighty son."

Then Warakraisun the yaksha bowed his head, received the royal command, raised joined hands, took leave, and went out from the royal hall.

He arranged skilled soldiers for war, selecting proud and strong fighters. One troop had mask-like faces and fierce hearts, holding guns, officers and soldiers together. One troop had tusked, curved mouths and held bows with strings tested. One troop had grimacing faces and patterned bodies, each holding gold-tipped weapons. The battle formation was complete, noisy and thick in uproar. Inspectors checked and arranged the tumult, setting them in lines along the road before the palace court. The yaksha soldiers and ministers were fierce, boasting of brave strength, brandishing weapons like final fire, eager to march out to fight.

Then Nonyupak, solar-line yaksha, when the army arrangement was finished, came to bathe in the river.

Golden water scattered in lines like rainfall. He wore divine flower perfume. His lower cloth shone with gold and pearls; his purple garment bore golden disks. Fluttering panels and side panels had swan-vines. His upper garment was fine gold cloth with encircling ornaments; nine-colored crystal armor alternated over it. Chased belts with floating gems, coral chest ornaments, precious city-worthy chains, bracelets, gem-set armlets, and diamond rings shone. He wore a great nine-gem crown and gold-flower garland. His hand held a powerful sacred arrow, and he came to mount the victory chariot.

O royal war-chariot: its deep wheels and rims were emerald. The axle-house and raised yoke curved gracefully; tiered jeweled crestwork formed the throne. Images of Garudas and lions were set in rows. It was harnessed to fierce royal lions. Lothan, skilled with the lance, flourished his hand and drove in bounding speed. High insignia and fly-whisks were ordered in rows; flags and banners streamed bright. Gongs and drums thundered through the forest, and the great army shouted in uproar. The sound of chariots, elephants, and horses shook every mountain as the vanguard hurried onward.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army, setting it along the mountain slope in Garuda formation with wings spread, waiting to fight the enemy.

Then solar-line Bharata sat on the jeweled throne in the golden pavilion, with monkey officers and yaksha troops crouched in attendance thickly on left and right, splendid as Three-Eyed Shiva going among the gods in heaven. He consulted on how to erase the unrighteous one who oppressed the earth.

Then he heard a thunderous sound shaking Mayura Mountain. He asked Phiphek the asura: "Whose army has marched here today?"

Then Thao Thotsakhiriwong the yaksha heard the royal command and looked according to the book of omens. Seeing clearly, he bowed and reported to the solar-line king, bearer of the bow: "The army that has marched to fight is the son of the eight-handed asura king, named Nonyupak, fierce in war. He went to splendid Mount Maran and for a long time performed a rite, tormenting his body. He returned and learned his two elder brothers' lives had ended; angry as final fire, he has marched the army out. I ask the noble younger lord to go fight the yaksha. The asura will end his life today."

Then radiant Bharata heard Phiphek the asura and gave command: "Listen, solar-line Shatrughna, powerful and brave. March the army to fight and destroy that unrighteous asura. Since he is bold and arrogant, end his life. Let it become your honor and fame as long as sun and moon endure." Having spoken, he ordered the child of the Sun: "Arrange the brave warriors for my powerful younger brother to go out and fight the enemy."

Then Phraya Waiwongsa, splendid monkey, bowed his head, received the command with joy, raised joined hands, and went out.

He set mighty Nilaphat to command the monkey vanguard, five seas of powerful, brave warriors, skilled and eager in war. Indra's grandson was the flank officer, commanding seven seas of monkeys. The royal division, all mighty in fierce power, numbered ten seas. The record-officer led seven seas of brave soldiers, with Si Chomphuphan as chief. The rear guard, victorious Surakan, commanded five dense seas. Each division displayed courage, eager and proud, with a sound strange enough to shake the earth, and set themselves in ranks by the king's command.

He cleansed and bathed, refreshing his body, and wore fragrant perfume. His lower garment had flying Garuda-vines, shining with rubies. His golden divine cloth was raised with dressed kinnari figures. The fluttering panel and side panel were priceless. His yellow upper garment shone with floating disks. Red-gold direction-plates, chains, jeweled ornaments, pendant chest-jewels, bracelets, armlets, and great war-rings adorned every finger. Crown, earrings, flowers, and ruby-bright ear-pieces gleamed. His hand held the mighty arrow, splendid as the shining sun, and he walked gracefully to bow to his elder brother.

O royal war-chariot: its raised yoke was beautiful crystal. The gold-underlaid axle-house, spokes, and rims shone with gems. Crowded lions stood chest-forward; Garudas held dangling naga heads. The great tiered pavilion and lotus-throne floated, with fine hanging crestwork. Four yellow horses were harnessed, adorned with complete jewels. Proud and brave in battle, the charioteer drove like the wind of time. High insignia and flags streamed in order: side-flags, victory flags, and banners. Trumpets and conches rang; pipes, gongs, and drums shook the forest. Brave soldiers shouted loudly, dust and smoke billowed, and Chaiyampawan, mighty in battle, held the flag and led the army onward.

Then Lothan the yaksha, skilled in war, looked and saw the monkey army. He raised joined hands and immediately reported: "May Your Majesty, mighty in power, think carefully how to win victory. Sky-ruling lord, do not treat him lightly."
