This is the ninety-eighth สมุดไทย unit of the Rama I Ramakien as published by the Vajirayana Digital Library. It follows Nonyupak's march against Shatrughna, Shatrughna's killing of Nonyupak with Bharata's Brahmastra, Cakkrawat's renewed grief and battle against Bharata and Shatrughna, Cakkrawat's decision to summon his death-friend Vaiyatal of Kuru, Vaiyatal's arrival in Maliwan, and Vaiyatal's army taking the field.
Translation
Nonyupak Falls and Vaiyatal Is Summoned
Then Nonyupak, splendid solar-line yaksha, heard Lothan's words and looked out. Seeing the beautiful human in noble form, the demon lord grew still angrier, burning like fire. He stamped his foot, urged the royal chariot forward through the great army, and cried: "Hey, human. Come fight with me, the brave one. Today I will kill you and end your life by my power."

Then radiant Shatrughna heard and answered at once: "Hey, hey, wicked asura. Why not think of yourself first before you boast of brave power? Your two elder brothers, demon lords, died destroyed in the middle of the army. Horses, chariots, elephants, and soldiers all died and became food for crows and vultures. You come out in proud excitement; I will kill you and end your life."

Then powerful Nonyupak heard and grew angry as fire. He clapped his hands, pointed at Shatrughna's face, and answered: "Bah, bah, wicked human, arrogant and gross in speech. One spared from death should feel shame in his heart. This moment you will see." Having spoken, he gave royal command: "Hey, diligent demon ministers, drive the kumbhanda troops quickly into battle and seize the human."

Then Chitraphat, commander of the vanguard, received the order and drove the army in to kill the forest-monkeys.

The vanguard surged into battle. Some divisions fired great guns; they hurled weapons in confusion, pressing in to thrust, stab, and cut.

Then the diligent monkey army split its force to meet the kumbhandas, fighting, killing, striking, and battering. They broke necks, arms, and legs amid loud shouts and uproar. The demon bands died senseless by the monkeys' power.

Then the son of Cakkrawat, skilled in war, saw the monkeys bravely destroy the kumbhanda host, killing the soldiers so they lay everywhere over the earth. The demon lord grew furious, drew the bow, stood firm, ground his teeth, drew back, and shot.

The air shook and thundered; the mountains roared and trembled. It struck the forest-monkey host, and they died rolling over the earth.

Then radiant Shatrughna saw Nonyupak send the demon arrow to attack and saw the monkey soldiers falling dead. He drew the Phlai Wat arrow from the quiver, set it on the string, drew with bodily strength, and Narai's younger brother released it by power.

Its sound was like cutting wind. It went straight and struck the yaksha chariot. The royal lions and charioteer died, and the asuras died in heaps, piled together.

Then Cakkrawat's splendid son fell from the chariot, sprang up, and stood firm. Grinding his teeth, he leapt and bounded, displayed authority, brandished the arrow-weapon, and chased the brave monkey soldiers until he reached the front of the splendid chariot by the demon lord's powerful strength.

Then solar-line Shatrughna saw the kumbhanda attacking and pressing forward. He descended from the chariot at once. His hand brandished the royal arrow, and he boldly seized the yaksha, like Thao Suchamphadi striking Phaichitra the demon lord.

Then mighty, brave-hearted Nonyupak met him, guarded, parried, and leapt forward into combat.

Each struck, each received, each guarded, turning swiftly like a revolving discus. Each intended victory and would not give way; they fled and chased by turns in confusion.

Then radiant Shatrughna, fighting close in hand-to-hand combat, gained advantage and seized the asura.

He leapt up, stepped on his shoulder, grasped his head, turned and changed stance, and struck him with the mighty bow-staff. The blow hit the yaksha's body and made him stagger.

Then he drew the Brahmastra arrow, the weapon given by the four-armed lord, set it on the string, aimed to erase life, and shot at once.

The three worlds roared and shook, all realms and world-mountains. It struck Nonyupak the asura, and by its power his life ended.

Now the tale turns to the gods in every direction and all the beautiful apsarases. Seeing mighty Phra Chakra's younger brother kill Nonyupak the asura, ending his life by the arrow's light, each one rejoiced. They opened radiant jeweled windows, leaned out smiling, laughed happily, and clapped until the sound rang out. Some scattered divine gold flowers, splendid popped rice, and jeweled offerings. Some played music, plucked and bowed, filling the sky with uproar. All heavenly women and gods gave victory-blessings to the younger brother.

Then Shatrughna, splendid solar-line lord, when he had killed the kumbhanda and the gods had cried blessings, saw divine flower-garlands scattered everywhere with sweet fragrance. He picked them up, admired them, smelled them in delight, and so did the brave victorious troops. Then he mounted the chariot throne and ordered the ten great armies to withdraw. Their shouts shook the forest as they went to the golden pavilion.

When he arrived at the splendid jeweled landing, he descended from the chariot and came to attend his blessed elder brother together with the monkey ministers.

He bowed at the lotus feet of his splendid solar-line elder brother and reported the battle events until the kumbhanda's life had ended.

Then radiant Bharata learned that victory had been gained over the enemy and rejoiced because it matched his thought. His face shone like the moon, and he gave royal command: "You who share my lineage and life, bearer of victorious power, have erased the enemy kings and ended their lives. It was not wasted that the Avatara commanded and sent us to subdue the unrighteous, jealous asuras." Having spoken, he went into the shining pavilion.

Then the yaksha scouts, hiding at the forest edge, saw Nonyupak the asura lose his life in battle by the hostile arrow's power. Terrified beyond measure, the two yakshas hurried into the city.

When they arrived, they bowed with joined hands and reported to Cakkrawat the yaksha: "Your mighty royal son marched the army to war and fought the human enemy; his embodied life has ended." They described every event in detail, according to what had happened in battle.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha learned that the son who shared his life had been killed by the enemy. Shocked as if a thunderbolt had struck his yaksha crown, he lost awareness and spirit, and lamented in grief.

"O Nonyupak, my son, tender one, beloved beyond finding an equal. From the time you were born and grew, your age counted fourteen years. You learned the three Vedas, spells, and weapons of the splendid solar-line kings, mastered them skillfully, and hoped to subdue all three worlds. You labored to establish a rite on the peak of Mount Maran, asking the knowing lord Phra Isuan for a mighty divine weapon. You returned, learned that the enemy had come close in force, grew angry, marched the army to battle, and meant to guard the royal city of Maliwan. Was it right that you were defeated by the enemy until your life ended, as if you were no brave man bearing great power? Your two elder brothers have no merit left, yet they had much happiness before this. But you, their younger brother, alas, were doubly unfortunate: you never enjoyed the splendid wealth and the beautiful young women." So he lamented in sorrow, as if his own life would end.

Then resentment filled his mind like poison-guns lodged in his breast and unable to come free. He ordered the ministers who shared his heart to arrange the great army.

Then honored Supinsan received the command of the mighty lord, raised joined hands, took leave, and left the royal hall.

He mustered a fourfold battle formation, choosing only proud and strong warriors. One division held bows and wore red coats with golden disks. One wore blue-green coats, carried krises, and brandished swords. One held thrusting lances and wore black coats with vine designs. One wore mist-colored coats, belted swords, and held spears with chased sheaths. One wore golden-flower coats and carried glaives, circling them in graceful display. Elephant lords rode rutting elephants, holding hooks upright. Horse lords rode proud horses, holding spears to hurl at the enemy. Chariot lords rode splendid chariots, holding arrows that drink blood. Each displayed power, arranging themselves by direction of march.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha entered the sleeping chamber at night. With his hand across his face, he thought of his three beloved sons. The yaksha king grieved, wept, sighed, and suffered; longing multiplied beyond measure. Then he reflected on the enemies, and rage filled the yaksha's heart, burning like fire searing his soul. He rose and sat again and again, unable to sleep, turning restlessly left and right until stars and moon slipped behind the clouds and golden light shone across the sky.

His anger against the two humans returned, and he could not stop thinking of their lives. He rose from the jeweled gold-inlaid couch and walked to bathe in the river.

He cleansed and bathed, refreshing his body. The water carried sweet fragrance. He wore perfume blended with flower-garlands, filling the body with delight. His lower cloth had curved mirror panels; his raised garment was patterned with royal lions. Fluttering and side panels were jeweled vines. Naga-scale armor was gem-set. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, chains, crystal belts, bracelets, armlets with raised carving, and splendid diamond rings adorned him. On four heads he wore jeweled crowns and bright ear-pieces left and right. Eight hands grasped divine weapons, and he mounted the shining golden chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were splendid crystal, its raised yoke bright with nine gems, and its jeweled throne splendidly patterned. Garudas and lions, lovely figures, scrollwork panels, and a pearl-work pavilion adorned it. It was harnessed to proud royal lions. Lothan drove swiftly as wind. High insignia and fly-whisks were in rows; side-flags fluttered and snapped. Pipes and drums roared through the forest. The army filled the road, shouting to take the omen. Loud sound shook the forest, dust covered the clouds, and the chariot hurried onward.

When he arrived, he halted the fourfold army and set the great formation firmly on the victorious battlefield, waiting for the moment to attack.

Then radiant Bharata came out among the ministers in the golden pavilion, consulting on royal war business, how to erase the jealous wrongdoers in Maliwan city, thorns to earth and world. All the monkey kings and warriors stood ready. Then he heard the demon troops shouting until the earth shook.

He gave royal command and asked Phraya Phiphek the yaksha: "This army that has marched today: which asura is it?"

Then thoughtful Phiphek received the command and read the omen, clearly seeing the asura signs.

He bowed at the lotus feet of the supreme lord and reported: "The army that has marched out is the lord of Maliwan city."

Then solar-line Bharata heard Phiphek the kumbhanda and gave command: "Listen, Phraya Waiwongsa. Quickly arrange the brave army. We will march out to fight and destroy Thao Cakkrawat the asura."

Then Phraya Sukhrip, splendid monkey, received the powerful lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged the monkey soldiers, selecting only brave and powerful warriors. Each one was of divine lineage, with power surpassing the three worlds. They knew how to walk on water, dive into the earth, and scoop up Mount Cakkrawan and Mount Meru. They flew swiftly through the sky and could endure weapons with breath held. Skilled and brave in war, crowded thick as a counted ocean, each displayed boldness to fight. Some held every kind of weapon, brandishing them in uproar. They stood ordered, filling the earth, each waiting for the king to proceed.

Then radiant Bharata and the younger brother who shared his life walked to bathe.

The two kings bathed their bodies in divine fragrant streams scented with pollen. Their lower garments had jeweled vines and curved borders with yellow gems. The elder brother wore gold-patterned cloth on a dark-green ground; the younger wore black cloth with golden disk designs in rows. Each wore fluttering panels, side panels, and garments of different kinds, with ruby chest ornaments, direction-plates, necklaces, shining chains, dragon-shaped armlets, and splendid diamond rings. Each wore a crown and flowers, and each held the royal arrow, beautiful as sun and moon, walking one after the other to mount the chariot.

O royal chariot: its hubs and rims were emerald disks. Its tiered throne had coiled vines with Garudas set in rows. Reverent gods were carved around the side-boards; crystal panels and upturned lotuses gleamed. Mirrorwork and crest-panels shone bright; the pavilion was spread with curved crestwork. Four noble horses were harnessed, tossing and rearing like lions. The younger brother sat with bowed joined hands, shining like the moon beside the sun. The charioteer drove quickly, steady in royal service, swift as a turning discus. High insignia, tiered parasols, victory flags, and drums were complete. Gongs joined drums until the earth shook. The soldiers shouted through the forest as the army hurried onward.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha stood in his chariot in the middle of the army. The asura glanced and looked closely, seeing the humans march with their army and monkeys packed dense as Akaniṭṭha heaven. Angry as poison-fire, he gave command: "Hey, great demon ministers, hurry the brave soldiers great and small. Break the human and forest-monkey army by power before they can set themselves."

Then the vanguard officers received the command and ran out, driving the army into battle.

Elephant troops drove elephants to charge and thrust; chariot troops shot arrows; horse troops hurled spears; foot-soldiers cut and hacked in confusion.

Then the monkey army great and small separated its divisions to meet and win victory. Officers and soldiers pressed forward in layers. Monkey troops and yaksha troops tangled together, each breaking the other by strength. They struck in close combat with uproar, and the asuras broke and died senseless.

Then Mahamekha, Mahakan, Nonthayak, and Chakrasun the asura saw the monkeys chasing and striking the demon soldiers, some dying and some scattering. The four officers grew angry and displayed courage. Each leapt and bounded out to attack the forest-monkeys, striking left and right in turmoil without pausing or holding back. The monkeys recoiled and broke before the kumbhandas' power.

Then the four soldiers of splendid Narai saw the four yakshas pressing the attack. Angry, grinding their teeth, they sprang in. Nilaphat met Mahamekha. Nilek met Nonthayak. Mighty Nilanon met Chakrasun the asura face to face. Victorious Asuraphat, son of the Wind-born one, met Mahakan the yaksha. They turned and grappled in uproar, neither side lowering its hands.

Then the four demon lords, skilled in war, each brandished a mace and pressed into battle. They turned and grappled in confusion, swift as a revolving discus, seizing, binding, and snatching for weapons, striking and cutting in uproar.

Then brave Nilanon, Nilaphat, Nilek, and mighty Asuraphat surged to meet the four demon lords. By fierce brave power they seized the feet of all four and smashed them against the earth, ending the lives of all four asuras.

Then they tore off arms and legs and threw them before the yaksha's victorious chariot. All the monkey soldiers shouted in loud uproar. Asuraphat clapped his hands and mocked him: "Hey, Cakkrawat the yaksha, you boasted of courage and came to match power with the splendid younger brother of Phra Chakri. All three sons have died, and the demon troops have died beyond counting. Do you know me, mighty in power? Where has that Painasuriyawong gone? Why not bring him to win victory? Or are you saving him for the kumbhanda's beloved daughter?"

Then splendid Thao Cakkrawat heard and grew angry as final fire. He roared in a mighty voice: "Bah, you animal's child, your words are vile and gross. I will split your mouth, cut off your head, and stake it, to satisfy your arrogance." Having spoken, he ground his teeth, stamped his foot, ordered Lothan to drive the royal chariot, and with eight hands brandishing weapons entered to chase and kill.

Then radiant Bharata saw Cakkrawat attacking in close combat, and the king drove his chariot out to fight. Chariot struck chariot with crashing sound. The monkey bands attacked the demon soldiers, who died everywhere in heaps.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha angrily drew his bow, set the arrow on the string, drew back, and shot.

It struck the diamond armor worn by Bharata, but did not pass through to his body. The arrow displayed great power and went on to kill the monkeys.

Then the younger brother of the Avatara, skilled in war, drew the mighty Agni-Wat arrow, and the king released it by his power.

Its sound was like thunder. It became countless arrows through the sky and fell, striking Cakkrawat the asura, pinning all his body.

Then the eight-handed yaksha king, struck by arrows and nearly dead, recited a victorious spell.

He blew downward, and the arrows slipped from his body; no wound stung him. Then he seized the terrible jeweled discus and hurled it by the demon lord's strength.

The discus became a thousand disks, blazing hot and bright. They circled the splendid jeweled chariot, and their sound shook the world.

Then solar-line Bharata drew the powerful Phlai Wat arrow, set it on the string, raised it, and released it.

The victorious arrow chased and erased the sharp discuses, grinding them all to dust beyond resistance. It struck the lord of great Maliwan, who fell on the splendid victorious chariot.

Then brave-hearted Thao Cakkrawat was struck by the arrow and wounded almost to death. The demon lord recited a splendid spell.

When the recitation was complete, he blew downward. The pain over his whole body faded; the arrows slipped out of his body. When the daylight bent toward afternoon, he did not return to battle, but ordered the demon troops great and small to withdraw, hurrying along the road back into the victory city.

Then radiant Bharata saw Cakkrawat the asura return to Maliwan city. He ordered the army, the monkey soldiers in battle formation, to withdraw. By moonlight they hurried back into the golden pavilion.

Then, on Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha's side, at night he entered the sleeping chamber, laid his hand across his face, and thought: "These human brothers are powerful, bold in battle with sacred arrows. Their soldiers too are mighty, each useful as mind desires. My sons marched out and twice gained advantage over them; was it right that the humans still did not die, but returned to fight? They killed Suriya Phop, Banlai Chak, and Nonyupak, all three sons. I myself have marched out twice and won no victory over them. I have lost horses, chariots, elephants, and brave soldiers in countless numbers. It is because unrighteous Phiphek is their eye. My own body was struck by sacred arrows and nearly died, yet that did not wound my soul as much as the words of that forest-monkey's child. How can I find someone to join counsel and erase the enemies?" He rose and sat again and again, maddened at heart, until the late night hour.

Then he thought: "My friend, my companion to death, sharing life and body, is named Thao Vaiyatal, ruler of the city of Kuru. He has divine weapons of fierce power, able to subdue every direction. If he points at anyone, that one dies. I will invite him to this city to help plan the killing of the two enemies, all the splendid monkey troops, and that jealous vile Phiphek." Having thought this, he bathed and dressed, bright with pearl ornaments, left the splendid jeweled chamber, and went out to the royal hall.

He lowered himself onto the jeweled throne beneath the shining white parasol. With priests and ministers present, the kumbhanda spoke the royal word: "Scribe, compose a royal letter reporting the victorious-war affair. Send it to Kuru city, inviting the friend who shares my life to come."

Then the honored scribe received the powerful lord's command and composed a beautiful letter. He inscribed it on a golden sheet, placed it in a shining nine-gem case, and gave it to the mighty minister according to the king's command.

Then wise and brave Supinsan received the demon king's royal letter, raised joined hands, took leave, and crawled out.

He displayed power with a roaring sound that shook every direction, split through the earth, and went to great Kuru city.

When he arrived, he reported the royal business to the great demon minister according to the command he had received, then immediately handed over the letter.

Then the ministers of the splendid underworld city received the letter and hurried together to the royal hall.

They bowed at the feet of the lord who was crest-jewel of Kuru's sovereignty and reported: "Your friend who shares your life sent Supinsan bearing a letter to the lotus feet of Your Majesty because enemies have arisen to kill." Having reported, they read the letter aloud to the asura king.

"Royal letter from the ruler of the city, crown of splendid Maliwan, to the friend who shares his life in enduring friendship. Now there are two humans, named Bharata and Shatrughna, brave in war, shoots of King Thotsarot who rules Ayutthaya city. They command monkey and monkey-king troops, proud, bold, and brave. They broke through the two layers of gates and have camped at Mayura Mountain. Suriya Phop, Banlai Chak, and Nonyupak, my three splendid royal sons, all went out to fight and lost their lives by the mighty enemy's hand. Now I see no one who can help extinguish the land's suffering. Alone, I am hindered and at a loss, like one swimming in deep sea. I invite my wise friend to come plan the killing of the enemies, to end the bold, vile host, and inscribe our fame in the world."

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha learned the letter's contents and grew angry, grinding his teeth. He stamped his foot and roared, his voice like thunder: "Bah, bah, humans no larger than flies have come to insult us this far, boldly killing the royal sons so all three splendid ones are dead. They do not fear me, of asura lineage, whose power surpasses the three worlds." Having spoken, he gave royal command to the great demon ministers: "Arrange the great army. I will go to Maliwan city."

Then Phattharachak the yaksha minister received the powerful lord's command, raised joined hands, took leave, and went out from the royal hall.

He mustered proud soldiers into a fourfold army. The elephant troops rode fierce brave elephants, rutting, roaring, and eager. The horse troops rode cloud-horses, rearing in war-pride. The chariot divisions had deep iron-covered chariots, arrayed in handsome ranks. The foot-soldiers were brave men, long trained in war. Some carried spears, glaives, javelins, bows, poison-arrows, and firearms. Each displayed strength and power, their roaring sound shaking the earth. Officers and soldiers stood ready before the victory court according to command.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, when dawn brightened, went to bathe in the water.

He cleansed and bathed, adorning his body with sweet fragrance. His lower cloth had golden vines and coral disks; his garment had graceful scrollwork. Side and fluttering panels were set with yellow gems. His upper garment shone with bright gold. Sparkling crystal chest ornaments, three jeweled chains, city-worthy bracelets and armlets, diamond rings shining like fireflies, a jeweled crown with floating gem-disks, and flower ornaments adorned his ears. His hand grasped a palm-wood club and a shining splendid jeweled discus. Beautiful as Vessuwan himself, he walked to mount the victory chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were all emerald. The axle-house and raised yoke curved gracefully; the tiered throne was set with crestwork. Images of reverent gods and Garudas carrying nagas shone in rows; the jeweled pavilion gleamed like Brahma's palace. It was harnessed to four thousand lion-elephants. Lothan held an artful bow and drove swiftly as a flying swan. High insignia were arranged complete. Pipes, gongs, and drums sounded loudly, wheels rang deep, and the fourfold army moved beside it, shouting in uproar. Horses, chariots, elephants, and soldiers hurried thickly at left and right, split through the earth, and went straight to Maliwan city.

When he arrived, he halted the brave soldiers in front of the palace court, descended from the shining jeweled chariot, and walked up to the royal hall.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha saw his friend and rejoiced. He walked to receive the asura, invited him in beautiful words, led Vaiyatal by the hand, and seated him beside him on the splendid throne, while the demon kings paid respect to one another.

Then splendid Thao Vaiyatal sat near the friend who shared his life, and the kumbhanda asked: "Enemies came and surrounded your city, but you did not make the matter clear to me until all three beloved sons had died. How has this become so? Thinking it over, it is deeply disappointing, as if you were no member of the splendid yaksha line. If you had told me from the beginning, would the enemies have grown arrogant?"

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard his friend speak. Tears brimming in his eyes, he answered: "The reason I did not go and tell you was that I did not think the matter would reach this point. Only when the fighting and struggle ended with my sons dead by the enemy did I suddenly think to invite you, hoping to rely on your feet, dear friend, to avenge them in full with your wisdom and thought."

Then Thao Vaiyatal, bearer of the discus, heard the four-faced king's words and answered: "What are these two human enemies, boasting of fierce brave power? What can they become? Leave the work to your servant; I will fight them."

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha heard his friend's speech as if divine water had bathed his body. His eight hands clapped loudly, his four faces shone like the moon, and his four mouths smiled. He embraced his friend and commanded: "This time the arrogant humans and the vile forest-monkeys will lose their lives by your power, with none left." Having spoken, he ordered the great demon ministers: "Tell the cooks inside and outside to prepare rice foods and triumphant liquor for my splendid friend, and feed all the soldiers who have come from the underworld city."

Then wise and brave Supinsan bowed his head, received the royal order, raised joined hands, took leave, and crawled out.

He ordered the guards to announce the command to the cooks inside and outside, left and right, according to the royal order of the asura king.

Some roasted, cooked curries, panang, and fish cakes; all savory and sweet dishes were finished. They hurried to arrange them on tables and trays, each set out with delicious foods.

Then the palace women of left and right, slender, lovely, and pleasing to the eye, all beautiful in form, adorned themselves to show their beauty and stir love, delightful to the heart. They combed their hair, set their edges, applied oil, and powdered their moonlike faces spotless. Carrying the service articles, graceful in manners, every lovely woman went up to the shining palace to attend the mighty asura.

Then the palace women, great and small, lovely and shining in form, came in, crouched, and served at their work. Some poured liquor into jeweled pearl cups and offered them to the two demon kings, bowing low and fanning.

On the entertainers' side, they sang laments, slowly answering one another, voices drawn out in ornament. They plucked lutes and bowed fiddles; ramana drums and other drums answered in alternating sound. Cymbals and clappers joined the singing, pleasant and loud in delight.

On the dancers' side, they moved their arms, danced, and shaped gestures, weaving and turning back and forth before the yaksha kings. Then they danced in graceful turns, switching into Narai throwing the discus, glancing sidewise with lovely eyes, coquettishly frowning and beckoning. Then feet and hands rose together; they turned, glanced, feigned retreat, and shone like heavenly kinnari women, pleasing to the eye.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha ate while watching the beautiful dancing women. Every woman was lovely and graceful, shining like heavenly apsarases. Their voices and lamenting song entered his ears sweetly and caught his heart. Pleasure and love delighted him; the more he watched, the more his awareness drifted into the women's forms.

Then the outside cooks of left and right finished preparing the soldiers' feast and carried it in together.

They set it in front of the palace court: ducks, geese, roasted buffalo, roast bison, elephant salad, elephant curry, elephant fish cakes, and distilled liquor filling jars.

Then the soldiers great and small who had come from the underworld city rejoiced. Officers and soldiers gathered by divisions to eat, lifting strong distilled liquor and passing it around. All became drunk and senseless. Some danced, some sang in disorder, grabbing at the young cooks. Some said, "When the battle is done, these widows will not escape us." The sharp-tongued cooks scolded, holding serving-cover lids and shaking. The soldiers teased and laughed, snatching this and that in confusion. Some ate so much they vomited; not one could behave properly. Noise filled the whole victory city, and officers and soldiers were happy and delighted.

Then Thao Cakkrawat the yaksha, after the soldiers' feast was finished, was pleased and delighted. When the sun set and sank behind the mountain, he invited his mighty friend to sleep on the same couch.

Then splendid Thao Vaiyatal, when dawn broke and the sunlight cleared, told the lord of Maliwan city: "I will march with the army, the hundred thousand brave yaksha soldiers, go out to battle, and destroy the enemy host." Having spoken, he walked from the jeweled pearl couch, descended from the radiant palace, and went to the victory pavilion.

When he arrived, he gave command to the great ministers: "Prepare the great army. I will go to war with the enemy."

Then Phattharachak the yaksha minister received the powerful lord's command, raised joined hands in homage, and went out.

He arranged the fourfold army formation, keeping divisions by left and right. Elephant lords hurried to harness elephants; horse lords harnessed Manomai horses. Chariot lords yoked splendid chariots, victory flags planted bright on the raised yokes. Commanders inspected and prepared the great soldiers according to the counted rolls. The whole formation was complete: all four troop types ready, each soldier with the proper weapons in hand. They stood in ordered ranks, with the demon lord's jeweled chariot and the battle-wise army filling the ground like water flowing in the sea.

Then Thao Vaiyatal the yaksha, when the army arrangement was finished, came to bathe.

He cleansed and bathed, refreshing his body, and wore perfume fragrant everywhere. His lower cloth was set with dark-blue gems, and his garment showed dancing kinnari patterns. Fluttering and side panels had coiled vines set with beautiful emeralds. Diamond armor alternated with yellow gems over a black upper garment with floating disks. Direction-plates, chest ornaments, chains, chased belts with hanging jewels, bracelets, gem-set armlets, and sparkling diamond rings adorned him. He wore great crown and ear-pieces, grasped discus and mace, and descended from the pavilion to mount the splendid royal chariot.

O royal chariot: its wheels and rims were all pearl disks. The golden throne supported coral-crystal panels, and the pavilion was like Indra's palace. Garudas and lions shone in ordered rows; three tiers carried complete images. Hanging fretwork formed flying swans, and jeweled kinnari figures stood in lines. It was harnessed to four thousand lion-elephants. Lothan stood boldly and shouted. High insignia and screens appeared in pairs. Gongs and drums sounded in uproar. Elephants and horses roared loudly; soldiers shouted in excitement. They brandished weapons flashing like lightning and hurried the army onward.
